The following table provides decontamination guidance for the environment and equipment within the dental practice. A list such as this is not exhaustive but does provide samples for each main category within the normal environment and clinical equipment inventory. If advice on the correct decontamination procedure is required, please contact the manufacturer or Infection Control Advisor.
RECOMMENDED DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURE
CLEANING SCHEDULE
Use single-use disposable aspirator tips. Disposable liners for suction (unless discharged to sewer). Clean using warm water and non-foaming disinfectant. Change filters according to manufacturer’s instructions. Tubing and lines to be disinfected at the end of each session according to chair and spittoon manufacturer instructions.
Before first patient. Rinse spittoon between patients throughout the day. End of morning session. End of afternoon session.
Automated washerdisinfectors
Start of the day. End of each session or more frequently if visibly contaminated. End of each session or more frequently if visibly contaminated. Provide hard surface wipes for parents to use.
Bracket table and handle
Clean external areas with detergent and hot water or hard surface cleaners. Follow manufacturers’ guidance. Replace if ripped or damaged. Provide protective disposable paper. Clean at the end of each session or when contaminated using neutral detergent and hot water. Use hard surface disinfectant wipe if contaminated with blood or body fluids. Protect with cellophane wrap. Clean and disinfect with disinfectant hard surface wipe at end of session / between patients.

Use daily disposable brushes or autoclavable brushes.

Aspirator equipment and spittoon
Rinse in toilet flush and allow to hang dry in open sided holder.
Before first patient. Between each patient throughout the day. End of morning session. End of afternoon session Rinse and autoclave following use. Store inverted and dry. Rinsed and stored dry daily.
