The following table provides decontamination guidance for the environment and equipment within the dental practice. A list such as this is not exhaustive but does provide samples for each main category within the normal environment and clinical equipment inventory. If advice on the correct decontamination procedure is required, please contact the manufacturer or Infection Control Advisor.

RECOMMENDED DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURE

CLEANING SCHEDULE

Use single-use disposable aspirator tips. Disposable liners for suction (unless discharged to sewer).

Clean using warm water and non-foaming disinfectant.

Change filters according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Tubing and lines to be disinfected at the end of each session according to chair and spittoon manufacturer instructions.

Before first patient.

Rinse spittoon between patients throughout the day.

End of morning session.

End of afternoon session.

Automated washerdisinfectors

Start of the day.

End of each session or more frequently if visibly contaminated.

End of each session or more frequently if visibly contaminated.

Provide hard surface wipes for parents to use.

Bracket table and handle

Clean external areas with detergent and hot water or hard surface cleaners.

Follow manufacturers’ guidance.

Replace if ripped or damaged.

Provide protective disposable paper. Clean at the end of each session or when contaminated using neutral detergent and hot water.

Use hard surface disinfectant wipe if contaminated with blood or body fluids.

Protect with cellophane wrap. Clean and disinfect with disinfectant hard surface wipe at end of session / between patients.

Dental Unit Water Lines (DUWLs)

Drain down system at the end of the day.

Flush lines for 2 minutes at the start of the session and for 20 -30 seconds between patients.

Disinfect water lines regularly according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Before first patient.

Single use disposable unless for use on the same patient. Processing can only be undertaken if items are deemed to be re-usable, i.e. not single use and tracing / audit procedures can be monitored as effective and ensure use on the named service user only.

Fans should not be used in clinical areas. If used, they must be free of dust and cleaned regularly with detergent..

Air conditioning units must be regularly cleaned and have filters changed.

NB – Continuous dosing systems – refer to manufacturer’s guidance.

Wipe with neutral detergent and hot water. Leave as dry as possible.

Blood or body fluids spillages – use a 10,000 ppm hypochlorite solution, and then clean or use a chlorine based spillage kit. All surgery surfaces must be kept clean and free from dust.

Manual cleaning, ultrasonic cleaner, washer-disinfector, wrap and sterilise (vacuum autoclave) or sterilise and wrap (non-vacuum autoclave).

Hinges must be fully opened for sterilisation to be effective.

Disposable strips or follow manufacturers guidance for high level disinfection.

Do NOT autoclave due to mercury Domestic cleaners for lavatories and wash hand basins. Disposable paper towels for hand-drying.

Clean toys with neutral detergent and hot water; dry thoroughly and repeat regularly or when visibly contaminated.

Discard items which cannot be cleaned in this way.

Clean external areas with detergent and hot water or hard surface cleaners.

Empty, rinse and dry.

Follow manufacturer’s guidance.

Cover handle with plastic sleeve or cellophane and change between patients. Clean and disinfect unit (if independent), connector and hose with surface disinfectant after each use.
