2024 Annual Report

Page 1

Dear YSI Community,

What a year we’ve had once again! With now nearly 24,000 members, and 196 projects for 2024 in all corners of the planet, we are a massive global community – wow! Congratulations to us all. We are thankful to our working group coordinators and organizers who are at the helm for much of it. In our projects we have involved hundreds of new participants and worked with dozens of partner organizations. Our alumni remain very involved and help us set up collaborations and provide many great opportunities in their new ventures. We appreciate that!

As an umbrella organization we strive to provide broad support and an integrative function for the many scattered and disjointed spaces across our economics discipline and other social sciences. From this home base we can support each other in our respective ambitions and stay grounded in an open, welcoming community - today and for many years into the future.

It is heartwarming to see that when many places in the world look inwards, we are steadfast in offering a place for each of us in an open, global community. We are grateful to our mother organization INET and its leadership for its tremendous support and guidance without which all this would not be possible.

We thank you all for being a part of this collective effort. We look forward to working with you in 2025!

Sincerely yours,

A word from INET’s President

We live in a time when financial sustainability, domestic turmoil related to economic inequality, and rising tension between nations that have, until recently, engaged in cooperation and development for many decades. In addition, before us now are profound disruptions from climate change that are accelerating in frequency and severity as we move into our future. And there is the potential and the fear of how Artificial Intelligence will disrupt the role of humans in the economy at a time when the cost of higher education is daunting.

This cauldron of disruption is a call to action, and we are extremely fortunate that an extraordinary community of young scholars is rising to these challenges.

How can we express our gratitude to these aspiring leaders of the future for their commitment to address these daunting challenges with deep awareness? Teaching them about the dilemmas of economics, through meetings and libraries consisting of papers, videos, and audio recordings is part of what we do for them. We also strive to illuminate for them the structure of the profession and the incentives they will face with the help of leading scholars from the profession like James Heckman, George Akerlof, and Angus Deaton.

In addition, the mentoring of postdoctoral students interested in the realm of policy, as is being done by William Hynes, who has in the past been a leader of New Approaches to Economic Thinking at the O.E.C.D and has worked with the World Bank as a senior climate economist, is important. Managing the public good matters.

INET’s YSI leadership digs deep into the sensibility and curiosity of young people throughout the world. It is an honor and a pleasure and a source of hope for us all that we can work to aid them and to serve the creation of the good-hearted global leaders of the future.

As Diana Ross sings in Theme from Mahogany, Do you know where you're going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you? For many, the stress of our time is due to a sense that we do not know, and what we see does not feel good.

That is why I am so grateful to this young community. As they search for the next North Star to navigate to a healthy and sustainable future they bring to mind and heart the sound of Diana Ross singing, Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand. Make This World a Better Place if You Can.

It is an honor to serve you and to support you in building a better future for us all and our children.

Rob Johnson, President of INET

There is an aphorism derived from the sport of ice hockey that the smart player doesn’t go where the puck is but where it will be. When INET was founded in the wake of the 2007/8 financial crisis, the mission was nothing less than changing the way economics was done – meaning how it was envisioned, taught, and practiced. Of necessity, this is a forward-looking exercise, in two dimensions.

First, it involves understanding the drivers of structural change. While it was dysfunction in the financial sector that provided the initial impetus for INET’s work, it has rapidly come to include a broader set of issues – climate and sustainability; rapidly advancing technologies; and eroding institutions, marginalization, and polarization.

Second, it involves dealing-in young people, the future scholars, practitioners, and decision-makers who will be most affected by changes wrought today and who must be best equipped to address them.

This, in a nutshell, is the YSI, as this annual report amply attests. Operating through over twenty working groups, YSI spans the thematic and geographic domains that are vital to understanding economics’ past, present, and future. There would be no INET without a YSI. The breadth of YSI’s reach, the depth of its research outputs, and the energy of its membership represent the very ethos that led to the creation of INET. As Chair of INET’s Board of Directors, it continues to be a joy and privilege to have YSI as part of the family.

A note from the YSI Community Board

Dear Young Scholars,

This past year has seen continued growth in the YSI community, with events happening around the world, highlighting the increasing reach and importance of our network. Scholars from diverse fields have come together to share ideas and collaborate on reshaping the current paradigm in economics. We as the YSI Community Board support the range of activities we’ve witnessed, ensuring the network continues to provide valuable opportunities for engagement.

A notable development this year has been the growth of local hubs, which have offered members more opportunities to meet regularly in person. These hubs provide an effective way for scholars to connect and collaborate within their regions, while still being an active part of the broader YSI network. With our support of the Community Board, these hubs are becoming a vital aspect of how we stay connected, and it’s encouraging to see how they are strengthening the sense of community within YSI. I look forward to seeing these connections grow even further in the year ahead.

Best regards,

Spinola On Behalf of the Community Board

Danilo Spinola, Senior Lecturer Birmingham City Business School

As of Q4 of 2024, YSI’s membership stands at 23,758* members, which represents a year over year growth of approximately 20%. On average, YSI members visited the YSI website more than 100,000 times in a three-month period.

*Duplicate memberships excluded from the count.

Of the 196 projects that the community organized, 168 were in-person workshops. 68 of them took place in Europe, 46 in Latin America, 21 in Asia, 22 in Africa, 9 in North America, 1 in the Middle East, and 1 in Australia. The 28 virtual projects contained both one-time webinars and series. For a series, the average number of sessions was 7.5, with two long-running series continuing to meet once a week.

The number of members who took on responsibilities to organize projects rose steadily.

As many as 153 members chose to take up an organizer role for the first time this year, raising the number of ’core members’ from 492 to 644

Development finance in Asia: current outlook and future trends ↗

This project brought together young and senior scholars from different parts of the world to discuss different aspects of economic development in Asia. Senior speakers expanded on topics such as: China’s development model; the origins of trade wars; the history of development banking and other related phenomena. Young scholar panels picked up on these themes and provided a more in-depth analysis into each of them and explored potential research pathways. The event attracted a significant number of new young scholars who were students of NYU Shanghai. The event offered something significantly different in comparison to their coursework inducing their curiosity and attracting their active engagement. They were also interested to learn more about YSI and think about ways that they could participate in bringing more YSI events to China in the future.

Meeting of Young Minds in Frontiers of Economics ↗

In February, YSI worked with Sunanda Nair-Bidkar, INET’s Director, South Asia, to launch the Meeting of Young Minds (MYM) in the Frontier of Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The three-day conference attracted over 250 applications and brought together 50 young scholars and 10 senior scholars to discuss various themes in economics. Highlights included opening lectures by INET Chairman Rohinton Medhora and INET President, Rob Johnson. The valedictory speech by Professor Michael Sandel from Harvard University attracted more than 900 students from in and around Mumbai. MYM is one of YSI's most significant initiatives in South Asia. 20-Feb, Mumbai, India

Winning Back the People: The Berlin Summit ↗

In late May 2024, INET President Robert Johnson, Research Director Thomas Ferguson, and several other prominent INET scholars, including Antonella Stirati (University of Rome 3), Peter Bofinger (University of Wuerzburg), and Robert Gold (Kiel) all participated in the Forum New Economy’s conference on Winning Back the People – Testing Times for New Economic Paradigm. Held in Berlin, the conference attracted many prominent scholars and intellectuals. At the closing panel, Robert Johnson discussed China, the US, and European relations. On another panel, Thomas Ferguson cautioned that the slow rollout of Bidenomics would limit its impact on the US economy and that inflation was likely to overshadow it. Stirati and other scholars warned that the new fiscal rules in the European Union would also cause a great deal of trouble for many countries.

Monsoon School ↗

The 2024 Monsoon School on Inequality, organized by the Inequality Working Group, provided a unique and impactful platform for young scholars from across India to explore economic disparity. For over half of the participants—mostly undergraduate and early-career PhD students from more than 20 states—this was their first academic event, and for many, even their first time outside their home state. The three-day campus-based school featured panel discussions, data and skills workshops, storytelling, and research presentations, covering intersection of topics like education, caste, gender, policy, and climate. With a focus on practical skills and interdisciplinary dialogue, the event emphasized inclusivity, empowering students to engage meaningfully with economic inequality and connect with a broader academic community, which YSI can be proud of.

Latin America 9-Oct, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The first YSI COP workshop took place in Warsaw, Poland from 4 – 7 November with fifteen scholars and practitioners in diverse fields from around the world. The YSI COP process was guided by an expert practitioner of climate negotiations, Tomasz Chruszczow, COP24 Poland High Level Champion. Living COP29 was the main theme of the first day, with an intense single-day simulation of COP negotiations. On the second day, we stepped back from negotiations by visiting Hanna and Krzysztof Kowalski's worldrenowned farm to learn from their experiences in producing high-quality food within a changing climate. To carry forward our momentum, we crafted a final message from the YSI Community for COP29, which was presented by young scholars attending the official COP29 event in Baku, Azerbaijan. 4-Nov, Warszawa, Poland

Economics in Search of a Soul ↗

Over a year since its inception, the reading group has facilitated monthly zoom meetings exploring topics related to spirituality and consciousness, and their implications for economics and society. We began with various readings by Swiss psychologist Carl G. Jung; and thereafter read Goethe’s Faust, and Steven Herrmann’s Spiritual Democracy, among others. We concluded the year by reading Simone Weil’s The Need for Roots and will continue exploring more of Weil’s work in early 2025. New members are welcome to join at any time, and are invited to pitch books that may be of interest to the group.

Reading Group ↗

The Money and Finance Reading Group has recently celebrated its first anniversary. Over the past year the Group has grown in size, with more than 140 members who follow the group. Moreover, it has grown in depth as members have gained a deeper understanding of the intricate aspects of money and finance both by ourselves and with the support of important academics in the field, such as Professor Jan Toporowski.

London Hub

The UK Hub continues to thrive, holding to the core idea that young scholars can contribute to framing and developing an academic agenda engaged with building an alternative future. In 2024, YSI members living in the UK met in London for oneday workshops in April and December, respectively, to discuss pressing political economy issues and share their recent research outputs. The Hub keeps in contact regularly, to share ongoing research and co-create YSI projects in the UK and around the world.

Turin Hub

The Turin/Italy Hub has actively leveraged several key YSI events such as: the Trento and Turin Festivals of Economics, the Workshop on the Organisation, Economics, and Policy of Scientific Research and the seminars organized by the Milan Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research Seminars (MInERS). These events brought together top scholars from leading universities, offering young economists unique opportunities to engage with cutting-edge research. Following the academic sessions, participants convened for informal aperitivo gatherings aimed at fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. The hub events aim to establish a platform for research sharing, interdisciplinary dialogue, and professional growth. By offering mentorship and skill-building opportunities for PhD students and early-career researchers, the hub seeks to strengthen professional networks and position Trento, Turin and Milan as key geographical hubs for junior and senior scholars to explore critical perspectives on the economy.

Berlin Hub

The YSI Berlin Hub is a space for YSI scholars based in Germany to connect. This year our main activity was the Winning Back the People: the Berlin Summit event coorganized with the Forum for a New Economy which ended with the Berlin Declaration. In addition, we hosted social activities for hub members and we met in conferences, including FMM. Through our WhatsApp group we shared many events, job posts, and information relevant to our community.

Local hubs

The Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) held its first locaL hub meeting in Nairobi on the 5th of April, which brought together a diverse group of scholars who are enthusiastic about advancing socio-economic development in East Africa. The agenda was full of interactive discussions centered on important regional issues and cutting-edge research methodologies, and participants shared their findings and insights, creating a collaborative environment where young scholars could meet more experienced researchers. The meeting was not only a forum for knowledge exchange, but also an opportunity to fortify the YSI community in Nairobi, with attendees expressing excitement for future collaboration.

Throughout 2024, the YSI hub organized several meetings centered on discussions about Argentina's macroeconomic situation following the recent presidential transition and its impact on young scholars. These meetings provided a valuable space for interaction and experience-sharing on this topic. Moreover, some members of the hub started to get more involved in YSI by organizing and participating in events. For the upcoming year, the goal is to expand the focus of these meetings to cover a broader range of topics. This shift aims to attract a larger number of young scholars interested in engaging with economic debates from a pluralistic perspective.

Buenos Aires Hub

On August 7th, the Buenos Aires hub held its first meeting at the National University of San Martín. Over 40 young scholars from various universities, both within the metropolitan area and Buenos Aires itself, gathered to discuss the importance of networking among heterodox economists in the country. The diverse and large turnout created a highly motivating environment, encouraging participants to integrate YSI activities into their local academic spaces. Despite only a few months passing since that meeting, several projects have already emerged as a result. Although Argentina is known for its diverse academic output in heterodox economics, with a variety of degree programs and academic staff, the hub provides a valuable platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration. It helps build connections between academic actors and the challenges facing the country.

We also welcomed a new Hub in Toronto, Canada and are excited to see the growth of YSI in that region.

Toronto Hub

Hub Convener Michael Cosh said the following: I'm very glad to say that we have started a YSI hub here in Toronto, Canada. My intention was to bring the new economic ideas that the YSI discusses, and its community of thinkers, into our city. We are a small group so far, and Femi Awopegba even came from Winnipeg to be part of it (for those who don't know Canadian cities, Winnipeg is over 900k away!). We are currently using Toronto Metropolitan University as our meeting space, and we hope this academic scene will bring in some curious minds eager to learn economic ideas and see what might be worth implementing in our own neighborhood. Next up on our list is to see if we can invite members of our city council, or MP offices. I'm grateful to have Savannah & Femi on the team and if all goes well we might be able to host more passing YSI members on their journeys.
