Welcome

Left to right : Jay Pocklington, Heske van Doornen, Christina Mosalagae

Dear YSI Community, What a fantastic year we experienced together. In light of the many challenges — societal, professional and personal — we once again turned to each other to create a vibrant, inclusive and stimulating environment and support system that helps us become new economic thinkers. There is no way to measure the value of the community to our lives, but some numbers speak for themselves : 100 in-person events, 175 webinars across all continents and timezones we’ve exceeded our pre-pandemic in-person event totals and locked in our pandemic level number of webinars. Today we are 22000 members strong. This is a great collective achievement and a testimony to the resilience of the community spirit. For that we would like to thank all of you, starting with our coordinators and organizers for working on behalf of the community to realize this. As of January 2024 we will be welcoming 48 new coordinators across all our working groups. They will be taking over from our outgoing coordinators who have served the community valiantly during the challenging years of the global pandemic. Thank you for your dedication ! As always, we would like to thank our mentors and partners. The majority of YSI’s projects are conducted with other organizations and with the support of senior scholars and experts. We truly appreciate your nurturing of our community. Lastly, a big thank you to INET, in particular to our president Rob Johnson and the INET Governing board led by Rohinton Medhora. Your steadfast support is fundamental to the growth our community has enjoyed to date. As Rob Johnson keeps encouraging us to “ Find your voice ! ” We may add : . . . and a global community of in which we listen to each other and are heard. Thank you for being part of YSI.

A word from INET’s President

Rob Johnson, President of INET

This is a trying time. Many are aware that orthodox economic thinking is not sufficient and that trust in expertise and governance has deteriorated. Many sense that there is danger on the horizon and many young social scientists want to change course but feel that they are off course and need to learn how to navigate to a new realm of thinking. Whether it is climate sustainability, financial stability and governance of the financial sector, economic equity, or future economic structures built in the context of digital technology, the challenges are many and formidable. The role of money in refracting political decisions is also of concern. Many are asking how we can meet the challenges and avoid a descent into totalitarian despair. At INET we believe most important response we can imagine to better meet these challenges is through preparing the leaders of the future. The Young Scholars Initiative is a gem. It is a pathway to a hope filled future. The preparation and education of the leaders of tomorrow could not be more important in these trying times. As life progresses, family, children, and grandchildren in the global north and south will depend on the vision and courage of tomorrow’s leaders. Elders who become vulnerable healthwise as they age will also be reliant on the social support systems implemented by the future leaders. How future leaders see what matters, and how they are taught to courageously comprehend and change the political economic processes that lead to social outcomes is of the utmost importance. Whether through inspiring academic research, insightful policy making in governance, or via a deeper awareness of the impacts of the actions in the private sector, YSI can help us all by teaching future leaders to “ Rise Up ” as Andra Day sings, and to produce a better world for us all.

A word from INET’s Chairman of the Board

Rohinton Medhora, INET’s Chairman of the Board

Phases and trends come and go but ethos endures. When INET was created in the wake of the 2007/8 financial crisis, the sense wasn’t just that a few individuals, institutions, or policies had failed. It was a sense that the discipline of economics itself — or at least its dominant strain in the three decades leading up to it — had led us astray. So, it was with a view to changing how the discipline itself is taught, practiced, and viewed that INET took shape. Even in the decade and a half since, the drivers of society have morphed. Financial sector fragility still matters but is not as vital a societal force as, say, climate change, technological advance, or polarization. There is no mission central from which good ideas emerge. And absolutely everything we are dealing with today will impact future generations more than it does in the immediate. This is a capsule summary of INET and YSI’s core within it. YSI’s truly global footprint, the spectrum of issues it covers through its working groups, and the sheer energy and intellect that characterizes its work is exactly what we as a global community of scholars and practitioners need more of. As this report describes, it has been yet another stellar year for YSI with more and better to come. As Chair of INET’s Board of Directors it is both reassuring and a privilege to have YSI a part of the constellation to make the world better by doing economics better.

Thank you to Thomas Vass

Thank you to Thomas Vass who left the organization’s management team earlier this year. The many of you who got to know him will recognize his profound mark on our community. He combines a true brilliance of the mind and courage of the heart that we seek. As he led the community in the critical phase phases from 2014-2020 he poured himself into building the foundation to formidable network we have today. We can’t thank you enough. The community is indebted to you, dear friend. YSI would not be YSI without you.

Local hubs 24 — YSI Annual Report 2023

UK Hub When YSI members from London and nearby towns decided to get together in 2022, the UK hub was born. This has led to a valuable new format for members to connect, develop collaborations, and support one another. Hub meetings often include a talk, a dinner, and a brainstorm conversation, allowing local members to attend at short notice and without application procedures. Regular hub meetups have continued throughout 2023, and given rise to various new projects.

Turin Hub The inaugural Italy hub event took place in Turin on 17 January 2023 with a brainstorming session and discussion regarding early career challenges of young scholars living in various parts of Italy. This has strengthened the collaboration between young scholars and provided a support network for early career scholars to assist one another in navigating the transition into academia. This event was followed by more local meetings in Trento and Turin during the respective festivals of economics of the two cities. Future events will also be hosted in Rome and Florence where there is a growing YSI community.

Germany Hub With various YSI members based in or near Berlin, a Hub in YSI’s birth place was only natural. Thanks to the initiative of various local organizers, several meetups have already taken place, and plans for more are in the works. Members from across Germany are encouraged to join in for conversation, socializing, and support.

Mar del Plata Hub The most recent of YSI’s local hub is Mar del Plata in Argentina. Having initiated meetings in late 2023, this Argentina location may further develop in the new year.

Website updates

Website updates

The YSI website received a full overhaul this year YSI’s web platform was updated and transferred into a new architecture this year. The transition serves to streamline the existing structure, ensure its scalability and enhance its cost-effectiveness. Although all change comes with challenges, we are excited about the new environment and the flexibility it affords. Members also enjoy a new communication tool with the introduction of a YSI Discord channel. Discord provides centralized messaging channels so that members can easily brainstorm, collaborate, and request support.

Thank you to Entropy Fox We are very grateful to the whole Entropy Fox team for having served YSI for nearly a decade. The transition means their engagement now comes to an end, but the work they did will live on in the way YSI runs. When the EF team first entered the community, YSI’s needs were still unclear. Under the leadership of Thomas Vass, they worked hard to help figure out what would benefit the community, and pooled all their skills and creativity to provide fitting solutions. YSI would not be YSI without them and we wish them lots of luck in their future endeavors.

In particular, we’d like to thank : Martin Vestergaard
