On behalf of the Department of Industrial Engineering, I take great pleasure in presenting to you our 2023-2024 departmental scholarship recipients. These students have proven themselves to be excellent students and citizens, and we are proud to have them as part of our program.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, we have awarded $194,250 in scholarships to seventy-one industrial engineering students. Clearly, this would not be possible without the generous financial support of the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering and other members of our industrial engineering family. The students, faculty and staff of the Department of Industrial Engineering are most thankful for this support.

Zayna Abu-Safe

Zayna has had an interesting life journey. Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, her family moved to Amman, Jordan where she completed high school. She returned to Fayetteville for her college career. Her interest in engineering, particularly in the development and manufacturing of psychiatric medicine, is what led her to industrial engineering. She completing an internship with Phillips-Medisize at their Molex, LLC plant in summer 2023 where she gained valuable real-world experience.

She is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) which allows her to connect with like-minded individuals and further develop her engineering skills. Zayna was able to attend the NSBE 49th Annual Convention and found it to be an enriching experience.

She has worked as a career peer mentor and social media career ambassador in her time on campus and really enjoyed both experiences. They not only provided practical skills but also allowed her to meet some incredible people and make meaningful connections.

Zayna is very grateful for the scholarships she has received; they played a crucial role in making higher education accessible to her. She recognizes the value of education and the opportunities it brings.

Outside of school, Zayna enjoys shopping, spending time outdoors, collecting shoes, and just passing time with friends.

Malek Jalal Altal

Jalal says combining his passion for designing clothes with industrial engineering is what led him to choose this major. In the future, he would love to use his skills to start a successful business. He feels industrial engineering will provide him with a solid foundation in optimization and problem-solving, which are valuable skills in any industry.

During summer 2023, he traveled with his family to Jordan and Egypt, which was a special and memorable time with them.

Outside of academics, he has a variety of hobbies, including being an avid ping pong player, thrifting, and sewing.

Bonding with his classmates while pulling all-night study sessions has created some of his favorite memories and the strong connections he values. Having the support of friends like Javier Muriel, Milagros Romero, and Mr. Brandon Crisel has made a significant difference in his academic success and personal life.

Anna Atencio

Anna’s teachers in Flower Mound, Texas inspired her to pursue engineering. She chose industrial engineering because she feels it offers the widest range of opportunities. She is particularly interested in project management, as it involves overseeing and coordinating various aspects of a project to ensure its successful completion.

Academic achievement has been a large component of Anna’s past. She graduated high school early to attend college with her sister at the University of Arkansas. She credits family support and encouragement for her success. Over summer 2023 she completed Calculus III to advance her mathematical skills and prepare her for the fall semester. Outside of school, Anna enjoys going to the gym, spending time with friends, and engaging in church activities. She is also expanding her network through membership in the Society of Women Engineers.

Anna is very grateful for her scholarship and recognizes the importance of financial support to help her pursue her educational success.

Katie Augsburger

Katie is a senior industrial engineering student from St. Louis, Missouri. Throughout her college journey, she has actively engaged in various extracurricular activities, making her mark on campus. Katie’s involvement in Phi Mu Sorority has allowed her to contribute to the community through her role on the Philanthropy Committee, where she has organized fundraising events.

As a dedicated member of Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Pi Mu, Katie has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in engineering. In recognition of her leadership qualities, she was elected as the Tau Beta Pi Service and Program Chair for the upcoming academic year. With an natural love for math, strong problem-solving skills and her parents’ careers in the field, Katie’s decision to pursue engineering was a natural choice.

Katie’s passion for mentorship and guidance has led her to serve as a peer mentor for the First-Year Engineering Program. She looks forward to assisting incoming students and sharing her knowledge and experiences with them.

Riley Baker

Riley is a junior from Richardson, Texas, eagerly anticipating her graduation in the spring of 2024. She developed an admiration for the University of Arkansas and the city of Fayetteville during her high school years. Her decision to pursue a major in industrial engineering was solidified by her sister’s involvement in the field and an inspiring encounter with a successful industrial engineering alumnus employed with Google.

During the summer of 2023, Riley completed an internship with Walmart, where she contributed to the real estate and portfolio team. Her primary focus centered on streamlining communication processes and implementing digital solutions to enhance team efficiency. These experiences have served to fuel her ambition.

Riley attributes her accomplishments to the support and love of her parents. She also expresses gratitude to Dr. Ashlea Milburn for being a source of encouragement and motivation.

Riley aspires to make a lasting impact in her chosen field and is planning to relocate to New York City to pursue her dreams after graduation.

Carter Baldwin

From an early age, Carter was captivated by the idea of improving processes, which led him to pursue a degree in industrial engineering. He believed that this field would equip him with versatile skills applicable to any industry.

In summer 2023, he interned with Southwest Power Pool in Little Rock, Arkansas, his hometown. A regional transmission organization, Carter assists in coordinating electricity flow, much like an air traffic controller for power distribution.

Beyond his academic and professional pursuits, Carter enjoys a range of activities. He loves fishing, spending quality time with friends, and cooking.

Carter is an active member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where he has been involved since the fall of 2020. In the 2021-2022 academic year, he served as the fraternity’s house manager, followed by the role of secretary in 2022-2023.

Alyssa Ball

Alyssa, a native of Fayetteville, has always felt a strong connection to her hometown. It took her some time to find her true calling, but with a passion for mathematics, she soon discovered industrial engineering was a perfect fit.

Alyssa’s dream is to earn a master’s degree in industrial engineering and become a sports engineer specializing in statistics and data analysis, preferably for the National Football League. However, she also has an interest in transportation logistics.

In summer 2023, Alyssa worked as a research assistant under the guidance of Mr. Brandon Crisel. They collaborated on a project focused on developing E-Portfolios.

Outside of her academic pursuits, Alyssa is an avid Razorback Football fan and can often be found cheering on her beloved Hogs. She enjoys taking her dogs for walks in the park, spending quality time with friends and working.

Alyssa is a member of both the Society of Women Engineers and Christ on Campus, organizations that have provided her with a strong sense of community.

John and Lois Imhoff Endowment Scholarship -- $1,000

John Bante

From an early age, John recognized his affinity for mathematics, evidenced by completing his math credits before starting at the U of A. Fascinated by the concept of optimizing processes, he pursued a degree in industrial engineering, drawn to its focus on efficiency.

John’s career aspirations center on two main areas: working for a professional sports team to enhance their financial decision-making, or joining a hockey gear company to revolutionize goalie gear. John completed courses during summer 2023 in eagerness to expand his knowledge.

Beyond academics and engineering, John is an avid sports enthusiast. Hockey and baseball are his favorite sports to both play and watch, although he enjoys the excitement of any athletic competition. In his spare time, he engages in 3D printing and robotics.

John acknowledges and appreciates his parents for their patience and support during his decision-making process regarding his major. Their understanding and guidance were invaluable in helping him navigate through his uncertainties and ultimately choose the right path.

Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering Scholarship -- $1,000

Evan Bland

Evan’s thirst for knowledge led him to seek guidance from various mentors, both within and outside of academics. It was through their valuable insights and the transformative experience of the First-Year Engineering Program that Evan discovered his true passion for industrial engineering. With a natural affinity for mathematics and a deep interest in working with data, Evan found himself drawn to the field.

While he has yet to pinpoint a specific specialization, the stories shared by other industrial engineering professionals have sparked his curiosity. He envisions the possibility of exploring the intricacies of manufacturing floors, gaining firsthand insights into how they are meticulously designed and organized.

Over summer 2023, Evan’s goal was to stay ahead academically by taking classes, ensuring he doesn’t fall behind. When he’s not immersed in his studies, Evan enjoys the outdoors. Hiking and camping have become his goto activities, passions he developed during his time in the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Additionally, Evan dedicates his time to a local non-profit organization, contributing to their afterschool programs and making a positive impact on his community.

Although Evan hasn’t yet become involved with any campus organizations, his family has fostered a welcoming environment for more than 50 international students through Spring International.

Stephan Boland

Stephan, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, has lived in various states throughout his life, including Indiana, Louisiana, Connecticut and Arkansas. Growing up as a KODA, or Kid of Deaf Adults, he had the privilege of being raised by loving deaf parents.

Initially Stephan was pursuing computer science, however, his interests began to shift after attending an industrial engineering conference. The field’s focus on finding efficient solutions and optimizing processes, whether it be improving everyday tasks or managing schedules to achieve goals effectively, is what really intrigued him.

During summer 2023, Stephan participated in an Air Force program called SOAR, which focuses on glider training. He spent three weeks at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where he learned to take off, aero-tow and land a glider plane. Additionally, he completed a Calculus II course over the summer.

Outside of academics and military pursuits, Stephan enjoys various hobbies; reading and running are two of his favorites. He actively participates in competitive races, obstacle races and marathons. Stephan has already completed two marathons, earning second and third place in his age group. He is an active member of Cross Church and dedicates his time to volunteering for their “Set up/Tearing down” team.

Stephan is grateful to his parents for their support enabling his education at the University of Arkansas. He is also deeply grateful for the assistance provided by the scholarship, easing the financial burden on his family.

Bailie Brust

Growing up in Bentonville, Arkansas, Bailie developed a deep-rooted love for mathematics and a natural passion for construction. This interest was passed down by her father, an accomplished architect who actively involved her in various home renovation projects from a young age.

While contemplating a major in college, Bailie found a fascinating intersection of interests in industrial engineering. Unlike simply constructing physical structures, industrial engineering delves into the inner workings of systems and focuses on the design aspect. Intrigued by this field’s potential to blend construction skills with a deeper understanding of systems, led her to the degree program.

In summer 2023, Bailie worked at Camp War Eagle, where the joys of spending time with children and teenagers coincide with imparting teachings of the Gospel.

Reflecting on her college experience, Bailie cherishes the memories of camaraderie and support within the student community. Whether attending football games, taking hikes, or engaging in study sessions, she thrives in the presence of community.

Bailie extends heartfelt gratitude to her family for their support, as well as her closest friends for encouraging her to pursue studies at the University of Arkansas.

Grant Bunten

Grant Bunten is a sophomore industrial engineering student from Owasso, Oklahoma. In addition to his undergraduate studies, Grant is considering the possibility of pursuing a master’s degree in industrial engineering, furthering his knowledge and expertise in the field. To complement his engineering education, he has chosen a minor in mathematics.

Grant actively participates in campus life and holds a position on the Educational Committee of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Within the engineering college, Grant has taken on the role of a Peer Mentor for a second year, providing guidance and support to fellow students in their academic journey.

Outside of his academic pursuits, Grant has gained valuable work experience. He has worked as a server assistant at Mahogany Prime Steakhouse for over two and a half years, developing strong customer service skills. Additionally, Grant has been working as a tutor for math, physics, and chemistry for more than four years, showcasing his proficiency in these subjects and his ability to help others grasp complex concepts.

Betul Cengil

Betul is a doctoral student from Eskisehir, Turkey. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial engineering in Turkey.

Before starting her doctoral degree in the U.S., she worked in industry for six years as a planning specialist and project management specialist. She has been a teaching and research assistant during her three years on campus.

In her research, she is focusing on healthcare systems. She used data analytics techniques to investigate telehealth usage and has published her work. She wants to contribute to healthcare, especially telehealth systems, by using operation research techniques.

She is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, Alpha Pi Mu, Tau Beta Pi honor societies, and the INFORMS student chapter, where she serves as Vice President.

Betul desires a career in industrial engineering academia, where she can further develop her expertise and influence future generations of engineers.

Fatih Cengil

Fatih is a doctoral student in the industrial engineering department from Mugla, Turkey. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in industrial engineering in Turkey.

Before starting his Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas, he worked in industry for six years as a production specialist and process development engineer.

He is a student member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

He is also involved in several student organizations, including Alpha Pi Mu and The Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement. He served as the treasurer of the INFORMS Student Chapter and will serve as the president in the upcoming academic year.

His research focuses on optimization in power systems, and he studies solving power flow problems efficiently using machine learning techniques.

Nayan Chakrabarty

Nayan is a third-year doctoral student. His academic journey began with a bachelor’s in industrial and production engineering from KUET, Bangladesh, where a strong foundation in the field was established. Seeking further growth and specialization, Nayan pursued a master’s in industrial and system engineering from Ohio University, broadening his knowledge and skills.

Presently, Nayan’s research is centered around the development of a time-based maintenance policy for a wireless sensor network, with the primary objective of ensuring reliable coverage.

As an active member of INFORMS, a professional society for operations research and analytics, Nayan engages with peers and experts in the field. His dedication to knowledge sharing and collaboration was evident when he presented his research findings at the 2022 INFORMS Annual Meeting. Looking to the future, Nayan envisions applying his expertise in industry after completion of his Ph.D.

Amanda Cheatham

With a deep appreciation for organization and efficiency, Amanda has found her calling in the field of industrial engineering. From a young age, Amanda’s mother instilled in her the importance of pushing boundaries and continuously seeking knowledge, leading her to discover her passion for engineering.

In summer 2023, Amanda undertook an internship at LoneStar Analysis in Addison, Texas, representing a significant milestone in her journey. This hands-on experience in consulting and aerospace provided her with valuable insights and practical skills, fueling her aspirations for the future.

As a devoted member of Cross Church, Amanda finds spiritual fulfillment and connects with like-minded individuals who share her values. Recognizing the importance of diversity and representation in her field, Amanda is an engaged member of the Society of Women Engineers. When Amanda is not immersed in her studies or professional endeavors, she enjoys the quality time she spends with her loved ones, whether attending thrilling Razorback sporting events or exploring new hiking trails.

Jessica Creech

Jessica says her fascination with industrial engineering began during a high school engineering course, and it solidified during a college tour when she recognized the perfect blend of engineering and business that industrial engineering offered.

Currently pursuing her undergraduate degree, Jessica seeks to apply her expertise in data analytics and optimization to help companies become more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable.

Throughout her academic journey, Jessica has actively participated in various organizations. She has been an engaged member of Alpha Pi Mu since 2021, assuming the role of social media chair from 2022 to 2023. Additionally, she has been involved with the Society of Women Engineers since 2019, the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers since 2020, and Tau Beta Pi since 2021.

Jessica expresses heartfelt gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support and guidance throughout her journey. She also acknowledges the invaluable mentorship and opportunities provided by Dr. Chimka, Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Specking, who have allowed her to contribute to the department through grading and undergraduate research. Jessica appreciates the support she has received from the Arkansas Academy of Industrial Engineering, as they have played a crucial role in facilitating her study abroad experience and connecting her with job opportunities beyond the university.

Mikah

Mikah is from Miller, Missouri. A rising junior, he has already made a mark in the academic world by becoming an active member of the Engineering Career Awareness Program. Filled with a genuine passion for industrial engineering, Mikah has embraced his time at the University of Arkansas, relishing every opportunity to expand his knowledge and skill set. He sets his sights on graduating in the spring of 2025.

When Mikah isn’t engaged in his studies, he enjoys a variety of hobbies that bring him relaxation. His love for Anime allows him to explore captivating storylines and imaginative worlds, providing an escape from the demands of his academic pursuits. Mikah finds creative expression through playing the guitar. He cherishes quality time spent with friends, fostering meaningful connections and creating lasting memories.

Kalina DeRusse

Kalina is entering her junior year. She is actively involved in the Path program within the Honors College. This program has provided her with invaluable academic preparation, enabling her to excel. It has also connected her with various on-campus social activities, fostering a well-rounded college experience.

Passionate about environmental issues, Kalina has always been eager to discover solutions for our planet. She feels the study of industrial engineering will equip her with the necessary skills to analyze environmental problems and collaborate with her peers to develop effective solutions. With her determination and knowledge, she aspires to make a positive impact in her future career.

Kalina has an interest in working for an international organization, seeking opportunities to contribute on a global scale. To explore this path further, she has made the decision to study abroad for a semester in Madrid, Spain. By immersing herself in a new culture and environment, she hopes to gain valuable insights and determine whether this international avenue aligns with her aspirations.

When Kalina isn’t engaged in her academic pursuits, she enjoys spending her free time outdoors and volunteers at a local animal shelter.

Milagros Diaz Romero Torres

A junior from La Paz, Bolivia Milagros is a member of several organizations. She serves as the treasurer for the International Bolivian Organization, she also holds memberships in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.

In fall 2023, Milagros will take on the role of a peer mentor for the College of Engineering, showcasing her willingness to help others succeed and her strong interpersonal skills. Her family’s background in engineering has deeply influenced her career choice, and she takes great pride in being the first woman in her family to embark on this journey.

Milagros recognizes the importance of finding innovative solutions that enhance efficiency while aligning with environmental stewardship. Her desire to create positive change and shape a more resource-efficient future resonates strongly with her, and she eagerly anticipates the opportunity to apply her skills and knowledge to make a tangible impact in promoting sustainability.

Her goal is to graduate with a minor in Data Analytics by spring 2025. She feels this combination of skills will equip her with a well-rounded approach to problem-solving and optimization.

Milagros is seriously considering pursuing graduate education. By furthering her studies, she will be able to deepen her expertise and contribute to the field of industrial engineering in a more advanced capacity.

Audrey Dizdar

Audrey’s journey into industrial engineering took a unique route. Initially declaring civil engineering, she made the decision to switch to industrial engineering in the fall of 2022, drawn to the field’s versatility and the opportunity to drive change in various industries. Growing up with a love for math and science, Audrey found her true calling once she started her IE classes, solidifying her conviction in pursuing this path.

In summer 2023, Audrey completed a 10-week summer internship with PepsiCo as a Supply Chain Intern at Frito Lay in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Midway through the program, she was entrusted with a problem to solve for the company, taking the lead in the problem-solving process.

Audrey has taken on leadership roles in Theta Tau, serving as corresponding secretary, and currently holds the position of chapter treasurer. In the Society of Women Engineers, she previously served as outreach coordinator and will become vice president for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, Audrey is a student ambassador for the College of Engineering, where she leads tours for prospective students. Audrey attributes her academic success to the passionate and inspiring professors she has had. She also acknowledges the support of her parents and brother, who instilled in her the confidence to overcome any challenges.

Clara Ehorn

Clara graduated from Benton High School in 2022 and embarked on her college journey. While initially drawn toward architecture, she soon realized her deep love for mathematics which lead her to switch her major to industrial engineering in the spring of 2023. In addition to her major, Clara has decided to pursue a minor in mathematics, aiming to for a career in industrial design.

Throughout high school, Clara was an active member of the student council, serving as the class vice president. She also held the president position in the Benton National Honor Society and was a representative in Benton’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. These experiences motivated her to seek similar involvement opportunities in college.

Clara is actively engaged in the Arkansas Alumni Association and is a member of the Honors College. She has been selected as a Peer Mentor for the 2023-2024 term, where she will guide and support fellow students. Additionally, she is an enthusiastic participant in Arkansas Cru, a Christian organization, and plans to take on a leadership role next year, leading a Bible study specifically tailored for incoming freshmen.

Grateful for the support of her family, friends and college staff, Clara is excited for the future.

Karleigh Eoff

Karleigh is a senior industrial engineering student from Morrilton, Arkansas. With a passion for optimizing processes and improving efficiency, she feels she has chosen the right field.

Her dedication to professional growth is exemplified through her involvement in the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. She has actively contributed to the organization’s success, previously serving as treasurer, and taking on the roles of vice president and 2024 South Central Conference Chair for the upcoming year.

Karleigh is also a member of Alpha Pi Mu, the engineering honor society. In the coming year, she will serve in the role of historian, capturing and preserving its history.

Outside of her academic pursuits, she is an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, where she contributes to community service initiatives and fosters strong bonds with her sisters.

In May 2022, Karleigh completed an internship with Tyson Foods. With her exceptional skills and work ethic, she has successfully worked with two different teams, showcasing her adaptability and versatility. In summer 2023, she worked as an intern on the automation team.

Landon’s passion for improving efficiency and enhancing the lives of workers led him to choose industrial engineering as his career path.

During a gap year, he worked multiple jobs in warehouses and assembly plants. Witnessing the challenges due to inefficiencies in these workplaces deeply impacted him. Landon’s goal is to optimize factory operations within a major company, making jobs easier and more enjoyable for employees.

During summer 2023, Landon prepared for the fall semester by taking Calculus 1. To support himself financially and maintain a flexible schedule, he also worked as a Door Dash delivery driver. Landon loves vintage cars. In his spare time, enjoys cruising around, spotting classic vehicles and engaging in conversations with their owners.

While Landon isn’t actively involved in any campus groups yet, he has an impressive history with the Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow. Throughout his life, he held various leadership positions, culminating with the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and he earned the highest distinction of Vigil Member in the Order of the Arrow. Growing up on a small cattle farm in De Queen, Arkansas, Weston found himself immersed in the world of machinery and equipment, eagerly assisting with assorted tasks. Following his high school graduation, Weston spent a summer working in industrial maintenance. Amid bustling lumber mills, he observed and participated in various operations, further fueling his fascination with the intricate workings of industrial processes. With an desire to dive deeper into this field, Weston made the decision to pursue a degree in industrial engineering.

Taking the first step toward his goal, Weston enrolled in his local community college, becoming the first in his family to attend college. Lily is a junior industrial engineering student from Little Rock, Arkansas. Initially when she started her college career, she was thinking she would major in chemical engineering. When she discovered industrial engineering, she found that it better matched her skills and interests.

She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Lily shared that the camaraderie of the student body in industrial engineering is a motivating factor for her to do her best.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends, studying at local coffee shops and working out. Lily spent summer 2023 working as a pricing and supply chain engineer at ArcBest. She is excited to see what’s to come in the next few years in industrial engineering.

Throughout his high school career, Luke showcased his dedication to academic excellence. Additionally, his passion for music led him to achieve all-state recognition for trombone for three consecutive years.

When it came time to choose a university, Luke was drawn to the University of Arkansas due to its reputation. However, he initially remained undecided about his major during his freshman semesters. It wasn’t until he attended a departmental meeting for industrial engineering that he discovered the numerous benefits of this field.

Specifically she was drawn to the project management aspect of the field. As a freshman, she remains open to exploring various career paths. Recently, she explored the field of consulting and found the work of an alumnus of industrial engineering fascinating.

She plans to immerse herself in industrial engineering organizations as she enters her sophomore year. The friendships she forged during her freshman year, particularly with her study group, have been invaluable.

Gabe has a interest in the intersection of engineering and business, pursuing dual minors in data analytics and general business.

In 2022, he worked as a manufacturing engineering intern at Marshalltown in Fayetteville, Arkansas where he honed his skills in optimizing manufacturing processes. In summer 2023 Gabe secured an engineering internship at Sealed Air in Rogers. This opportunity allowed him to further expand his expertise and contribute to the engineering department’s endeavors.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Gabe has dedicated himself to serving the campus community over the past three years as a peer mentor with the First-Year Engineering Program. A member of various organizations, Gabe holds the position of treasurer for Alpha Pi Mu for the 2023-2024 term. He also serves as the president of the Club Spikeball Registered Student Organization.

With a love for math and problem-solving, Emma is currently also pursuing a math minor. She shares that she is inspired by her retired industrial engineer uncle and plans to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a career in aerospace and aviation after graduate school.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Emma is involved in various extracurricular activities. She has taken on the role of counselor at Kanakuk camps, where she enjoys working with and mentoring children. Sports are a big part of Emma’s life, and she participates in soccer, basketball and flag football. Furthermore, she dedicates her time as a volunteer for C3, a college student leadership team at Cross Church. Emma has been a member of Kappa Delta since 2021, serving as the chaplain of the organization. She gained valuable experience as a Pricing and Supply Chain Intern at ArcBest in summer 2023. She said her internship has provided a platform to further develop her skills and gain insights into different aspects of the business world.

Currently a junior, Omar plans to pursue a master’s degree after graduation. His career interests lie in process engineering, particularly in the field of transportation logistics. He is particularly interested in working with transportation systems related to aeronautics.

Omar is currently participating in a National Science Foundation undergraduate research experience called AI Sustein. He serves as a peer mentor for the First-Year Engineering Program. Additionally, he holds a job in the Office of Development in the College of Engineering.

Outside of his academic pursuits, Omar is an avid sports fan, enjoying both watching and playing tennis, soccer, basketball and football.

Sazid’s ultimate ambition lies in the realm of network optimization research, where he wants to explore its practical applications in domains like disaster response, logistics networks, and communication networks. His belief in the power of positive impact drives his desire to make a difference through his work.

In summer 2023, Sazid collaborated with Dr. Kelly Sullivan on his research project centered around Network Reliabilities. This opportunity allowed him to gain valuable experience while contributing to advancements in the field.

Outside of his academic pursuits, Sazid enjoys biking and exploring new places, particularly lakes and beaches. Within the campus community, Sazid has served as the secretary for the INFORMS student chapter in 2023.

Jamie is a junior industrial engineering student from Springdale, Arkansas. She immersed herself in college life by becoming an active member of the Society of Hispanic Engineers and the Engineering Career Awareness Program. Displaying a strong commitment to fostering a supportive community, Jamie served as a Resident Assistant on campus, offering guidance and assistance to over 40 first-year college students.

Balancing her academic pursuits and personal interests, in summer 2023 she completed courses to ensure her graduation in 2025.

Marshal Ray

Marshal is on track to graduate in the spring of 2024. While initially uncertain about his academic path, he ultimately chose industrial engineering over computer science, drawn to the business-oriented aspects of the field. Upon graduation, he remains undecided about his specific career focus, but the area of private equity holds considerable appeal.

This summer, Marshal has dedicated his time to finalizing his research for the Defense Logistics Agency and his thesis centered on the development of distributions for extensive datasets concerning demand and time intervals between demands. During his leisure hours, he enjoys playing billiards and exploring the local rivers through kayaking.

A member of Tau Beta Pi and Alpha Pi Mu since spring 2021, Marshal cherishes the friendships he has created throughout his university experience. He works at the Catfish Hole on weekends and actively participates in the Sam Pittman Show on Wednesday evenings during the fall. Outside of academic pursuits, he enjoys spending quality time with his friends. He has been an active member of the Kappa Alpha Order, since fall 2022, building relationships with his fellow brothers, particularly those who share his passion for engineering.

During a recent family weekend, Joseph had the opportunity to spend some time with his parents after months apart. He planned a special outing for them, treating them to a football game and exploring the vibrant atmosphere of Dickson Street together.

Grateful for the support of his family, Joseph acknowledges their role in his journey. He is equally appreciative of the camaraderie and academic support he has received from his KA engineering peers.

Santiago Schrader

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Santiago later moved to El Dorado, Arkansas, where he attended high school. Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new country, Santiago thrived academically and participated in various extracurricular activities.

Throughout his high school years, Santiago engaged with the national honors society and accumulated service hours at an animal adoption center. He also gained valuable experience working at a doctor’s clinic and assisting teachers after school. Balancing his commitment to academics and sports, Santiago excelled as both an academic scholar and a member of the varsity soccer team for four years.

Santiago feels the field of industrial engineering combines his love for applied mathematics and business. He is on track to complete his degree in the spring of 2024 and has set his sights on a career in the transportation industry.

Han Siew is a junior honors student pusuing a minor in mathematics. His parents are alumni of the University of Arkansas, his father an engineer and his mother a business major. Together, they instilled in him a passion for combining engineering and business and he chose to follow in their footsteps by attending the U of A.

Graduating from Little Rock Central High School in 2021, Han discovered his love for industrial engineering and its potential to optimize processes and solve logistical challenges. Beyond his academic pursuits, Han actively engages with the university community. He participates in various registered student organizations, notably the Vietnamese Student Association, and enjoys competing in intramural sports like basketball and flag football. Han’s enthusiasm extends to supporting the university’s sports teams, particularly Razorback football and basketball.

Michael, a native of Richardson, Texas, is an incoming sophomore. He possesses a genuine passion for golf and soccer, enjoying both playing and watching these sports.

With his sights set on the future, Michael has set clear goals for himself. He plans to complete his undergraduate studies in spring 2026 and then embark on a journey towards acquiring an MBA with a specialization in business analytics and risk management. He believes that this combination of skills will equip him with the tools necessary to make informed decisions in the ever-changing business landscape.

Joshua Smith

Joshua is a senior from Weatherford, Texas. His commitment to professional growth led him to an internship at Lockheed Martin, where he served as a software intern in 2022. Impressed by his performance, Lockheed Martin offered him an internship in summer 2023 as an industrial engineering intern, focusing on the production of the F-35 aircraft.

With a diverse skill set that encompasses data analysis, production planning and control, database management and coding, Joshua is prepared to make a significant impact in any role. Gabrielle’s dedication to mentorship and helping others has led to her involvement in the Engineering Career Awareness Program. Beyond her academic pursuits, Gabrielle enjoys a variety of hobbies. She enjoys reading, watching movies, attending concerts, spending time with friends, and going on hikes. Oliver says his path toward a career in industrial engineering was unexpected, as he initially leaned towards mechanical engineering. However, a conversation with a friend introduced him to industrial engineering, prompting him to research the field a bit more. Intrigued by what he discovered and by a department tour, Oliver made the decision to pursue industrial engineering as his major.

Although he is still exploring all of the career possibilities, Oliver possesses a strong affinity for supply chain and operations management. In summer 2023 he completed an internship with ArcBest as a pricing and supply chain intern. When not focused on his studies or professional endeavors, Oliver enjoys various activities such as playing pickup basketball, hiking and camping. He is also a devoted dog owner.

Oliver works as a team leader at the Student Technology Center, where he assists and guides fellow students. Jackson is from Flower Mound, Texas. An early fascination with mathematics and science sparked Jackson’s passion for engineering.

At the age of 14, Jackson embarked on a journey in manufacturing and logistics for HobbyQ, a local business. This experience allowed him to gain a profound understanding of operational efficiency and product development, cementing his decision to pursue industrial engineering. He has a particular interest in the aerospace and defense sectors. In summer 2023, he returned to HobbyQ, where he has been an integral part of the manufacturing and logistics team.

Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, Jackson loves board games and miniature modeling. He also enjoys roleplaying games and is an enthusiastic follower of various video games. His dedication to his passions led him to hold the position of vice-president at the UARK Tabletop Club, a role he assumed in the fall semester of 2022.
