Fishing Legends Return to Indy, Connecting Past with Present

Saturday, Feb 28th 2:00pm & 5:00pm

Forrest Wood, Jerry McKinnis, Billy and Bobby Murray to share stories of fishing history at 61st Annual Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show, February 28, 2015 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds

INDIANAPOLIS – Bass, boats, equipment and tournaments; each have played an undeniable role in the fascinating story of modern freshwater angling, which has grown to become the most popular recreational pastime in America. But it was a more fundamental element that actually laid the groundwork. “Until the middle of the 20th century, there were no lakes in the south,” says legendary fishing guide, tournament angler, author, product designer, and educator Billy Murray. Back then, you see, sport fishing was largely confined to the north, where an abundance of natural lakes exist. “President Roosevelt’s New Deal in the early 30’s led to the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the flood control acts that built the great lakes of the south… Kentucky, Eufaula, Dale Hollow, Table Rock, Guntersville, Pickwick and all the others,” continues Murray. “Most of these lakes were built between the late 30s and the late 50s, and they didn’t freeze in the winter. That’s what gave recreational fishing its biggest jumpstart.” Even southern Indiana’s treasured impoundments – Monroe and Patoka – while constructed later than many others, grew out of the same federal flood control legislation. Advancements in boats, fishing gear and angling techniques blossomed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s (about the same time that Lake Monroe and Patoka Lake were being built) spurred on by Ray Scott’s organization of the first competitive bass tournament in June of 1967 and his subsequent formation of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) a year later. Prompted by BASS’s popularity, the pioneers of modern fishing took to the road to show their latest products and techniques to eager anglers at various outdoor sport shows around the country – including, of course, Harry Renfro’s Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show. It was the winter of 1970 when three fishing guides from Arkansas rolled into the ice covered City of Indianapolis towing a new kind of fishing boat. One of the men was Murray, who’d earned great notoriety in the growing sport of tournament fishing. Another was the Ranger boat’s creator himself; a man named Forrest Wood. The third was a professional baseball player who became a fishing guide after taking a trip with Wood down Arkansas’ White River. He was also the

creator and host of what would become the longest running TV fishing show in history – a program called The Fishin’ Hole that would run for 44 seasons, started in 1963 by none other than Jerry McKinnis. They were here at Harry Renfro’s request. “We came in the night before and put the boat on the floor,” recalls Wood, who had only been building boats for a couple years at that point. The men found a surprise when they arrived two hours before the show was to open the next morning. “There was a line of people a block long outside the coliseum,” continues Wood. “We didn’t know what was going on, so Jerry tapped one guy on the shoulder and asked him what the line was for.” Of course, the crowds of people were there to see Billy, Forrest and Jerry. The men were humbled. “We’d never experienced anything like that,” recalls McKinnis. “Even back in those days, Harry Renfro did a great job of marketing his show,” McKinnis continues. “We never expected anything close to the reception we received. Despite the bad weather, the show and our seminars were packed.” “Indianapolis was really the first outdoor show to take an interest in bass fishing and help promote what we and others were doing,” Wood concludes. And what they were doing was simply meeting face-to-face with fishing enthusiasts and consumers to talk about fishing, an opportunity that only the consumer sport show can provide. BASS, and later, the FLW have created many fishing superstars. The first, however, was Billy’s brother Bobby Murray, who won the first Bassmaster Classic at the age of 25 in 1971. Bobby would go on to win the big event again in 1978, and earn a wildly successful career as a television host, tackle industry representative and public relations professional. Over 40 years later, Bobby Murray remains a top name and, indeed, his own brand in the fishing industry. Like his brother, Wood and McKinnis, Bobby Murray has appeared at countless sport shows over the years. “Even in today’s world of dedicated fishing and outdoor TV networks, slick and glossy fishing magazines and infinite online fishing content,

sport shows and fishing seminars are more popular and relevant than ever,” says Bobby.

expert about a specific technique or a piece of gear and then lay your hands right on it. It’s really unique.”

Wood and McKinnis agree. “Sport shows will always be popular because anyone can come and lay their hands on the latest products and talk one-on-one with the best anglers in the world,” says Wood. “That’s what people want, and no magazine article or internet chat room can replace that,” he continues.

Of course, this ability to interact personally with angling’s biggest stars has been a focus of the Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show since the late 60’s. And a lot has transpired since then, which is one of the reasons why Billy and Bobby Murray, Wood and McKinnis are all returning to this year’s show. The men will sit on an interactive Fishing Legends Panel Saturday, February 28 at 2:00 and 5:00 pm to talk about how everything that happened in the formative years of bass and other forms of freshwater recreational fishing have led to where the sport is today, while also sharing opinions on where it may be headed tomorrow.

“There’s no other sport where its top performers are so accessible,” McKinnis adds. “You can have an eye-to-eye conversation with a real

“People don’t ask me how to rig a plastic worm anymore,” McKinnis chuckles. “They ask me about history. They want to hear about where the sport we love so much today came from… the people and the stories that tie everything together.”

The Travel Café will encourage attendees to linger through the use of live and entertaining programs and demonstrations, as well as an array of multi-media displays showcasing destinations represented at the Show. In short you can grab a bite, rest a spell and pick out a new vacation destination all at the same time, this year in the new Travel Café. Feb 28th Fishing Legends Cont... Saturday, 2:00pm & 5:00pm Well, plenty such stories will be shared in Indianapolis on February 28 – with great enthusiasm, no doubt – when McKinnis, Wood and the Murray brothers convene the Fishing Legends Panel, an interactive discussion to be moderated by well known outdoor writer and youth fishing advocate, Dan Armitage. Of course, in keeping with outdoor sport show tradition, the panel sessions will include plenty of opportunities for audience participation. These legendary anglers and fathers of the modern fishing industry are all greatly looking forward to the opportunity. “We’ll just shoot from the lip and cover the topics the folks want to hear about,” says Wood, who believes fishing popularity is at an all-time high. “I may even

squeeze in an embarrassing story or two about Jerry,” Wood continues with a wink. “Lord knows he has more than a few on me.” Billy Murray’s ongoing passion is something he shares with Armitage – getting more families and youth involved in the sport of fishing. “A lot of folks like to watch football, but we can’t all play,” says Murray. “That’s the great advantage that fishing affords,” he continues. “Anyone can participate. Some folks just need a little help and information, and that’s why the sports shows are so important. They can help a family get started in fishing, or take a good fisherman to the next level. That’s what it’s all about,” Murray concludes. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness and interact with this historic gathering of fishing greats!

The International Bikini Team is a world-wide model search organization that does events and promotions in every state and in some countries. If you are interested in learning more about the team or participating in future events, please go to the website at www.internationalbikiniteam.org

ABATE Motorcycle Classes

ABATE of Indiana has trained more than 125,000 Hoosier motorcyclists to ride over the past 36 years. Beginning in 1979, before there was a state legislated program in Indiana, ABATE saw the benefits of riders having the skills and strategies to make their travels safer and more enjoyable. If you know someone that rides a motorcycle, it is likely that they have taken a course with ABATE, and now it’s your turn. Registration for ABATE classes opens at the Indiana Motorcycle Exposition at the Indiana State Fairgrounds February 20th through the 22nd.

Tiny Tots Riding Experience

Let the little ones ride at the Tiny Tots Riding Experience. Great for first timers and amateurs, the Tiny Tot Riding Experience is safe and fun for your future biker. Provided are the test track, motorcycle and apparel. The only problem will be pulling your child away! Plus, in conjunction with the Tiny Tots Riding Experience, ABATE of Indiana will have the “ABATE Children’s Motorcycle Adventure” with several hands on activities geared toward kids.

Indiana’s Motorcycling History Comes Alive

“I was born into it,” says Moore, who turned pro at 18 and went on to be one of the nation’s top indoor flat track competitors. “Most people either don’t know or have forgotten how popular dirt track racing was in Indiana,” Moore continues, “especially at county fairgrounds, where numerous dirt tracks had already been developed.”

INDIANAPOLIS – America’s early pioneers cut and blazed trails through Indiana’s hardwood forests in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These brave men and women helped write the rich history of our nation. Some 150 years later, a new breed of pioneers raced through these same forests.

Roberts, Moore and several other living connections to Indiana’s significant motorcycling past will converge at the 24th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo, February 20-22 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, to share riveting stories and fascinating historical facts and anecdotes from the early days of Indiana’s motorcycle culture at six Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling panel discussions. Other panel members will include Bob Schulteti, former motorcycle racer and current owner of Indianapolis Southside Harley Davidson, a business his parents started in 1947; Frances W. Leman, a motorcycle historian who first joined Motor Maids, the world’s oldest women’s motorcycle club in the world, in 1963; and Roy Garrett, a retired motorcycle racer from Columbus who has been actively involved in the American Motorcycle Association (AMA), ABATE, Discover Indiana Riding Trails (DIRT), and the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club for over 30 years.

Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling share rich stories of competition history and the origins of today’s motorcycle lifestyle at 24th Annual Indiana Motorcycle Expo

Greenwood resident Larry Roberts ran his first enduro motorcycle race – called a “woods race” in those days – in 1955 at the age of 14. Woods races were popular in Indiana in the 1950s and 60s, largely due to the state’s large tracts of public land, and were frequently held in Brown County State Park, the Hoosier National Forest and many other state properties. “A woods race was like a cross country event. These were timed off road runs through thick woods and agricultural fields,” says Roberts, who won Indiana’s 100-mile championship event three times in the early 1960’s on custom bikes he and family members built in his garage. “You couldn’t buy a race bike back then,” Roberts says. “You took a street bike and built it for off road. You changed the seating, tires and gearing, and raised the fenders. Manufacturers started offering some off road scramblers in the early 1970’s, but it wasn’t really until the mid 90’s that you could actually buy a flat out race job.” It was a continuation of the origins of motorcycle customization that began as soon as Orient-Aster, Harley Davidson, Indian and others began making and selling production motorcycles in America at the beginning of the 20th century. Long before woods racing, board track racing was popular in Indiana and throughout the country in the early decades of the 20th century. Constructed of rough-cut timber planks, board tracks -- also called motordromes – were built with high banks that allowed early motorcycle racers to compete grip-to-grip at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Horrific accidents and widespread fatalities brought about the end of board track racing by the end of the 1920s, when flat track racing began to gain popularity. Indianapolis native Rick Moore began flat track racing in 1957 at the age of 12. His father was a Harley Davidson dealer turned Indian and Triumph dealer who had been a national hill climb champion in the 20s and 30s.

These moderated sessions will cover all aspects of Indiana’s motorcycle history, and will include ample opportunities for audience participation. Following each session, audience members will be invited to talk one-onone with these pioneers and view an unbelievable display of their private collections of historic motorcycle memorabilia including apparel, keepsakes, personal photographs and, of course, several highly significant motorcycles. Many of these items have never been seen by the public. The Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling helps to paint a bold yellow centerline connecting Indiana’s storied motorcycle history with the biker lifestyle so many Hoosiers enjoy today. Sometimes, when you want to know where you’re going, it’s helpful to take a glance in the rearview mirror and take a look at where you’ve been. Don’t miss your opportunity to learn where Indiana’s motorcycle heritage has come from. Come hear how it started from the men who lived it themselves – many of whom were brought into the lifestyle by parents who were a part of it from the very start. The Pioneers of Hoosier Motorcycling sessions will involve over 12 of Indiana’s motorcycle pioneers – each with unique stories to tell – and take place at 4:00 pm on Friday, February 20, noon, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 21, and 11:30 am and 2:30 pm on Sunday, February 22. The historic motorcycle memorabilia display will be open for viewing on a continuous basis during all Indiana Motorcycle Expo hours.

Hoosier Record Book Captures History of Record Bucks in Indiana

Nothing commands our attention like a trophy rack. A magnificent set of antlers stirs something primal in us, but few associate Indiana with trophy deer. That all changed on November 17, 2012. On that day Tim Beck presented to the world what Indiana’s deer genetics can produce. Scoring at 305 7/8” non-typical, the 37-point buck now ranks as the second largest white-tailed deer ever taken by a hunter in North America. What makes it even more rewarding is the fact that white-tailed deer were extirpated from the state in the late 1800s, and for over 40 years Indiana didn’t even have deer.

While the world was shocked that the Hoosier state produced such a monster, there were some that predicted it. They see evidence every year of what lurks in the hills, river bottoms, and fields of Indiana, and that’s massive bucks. They’ve watched as the average trophy size has inched its way up over the years. Who are these people in the know? They’re the volunteers of the Hoosier Record Buck Program.Few hunters realize that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources doesn’t track the quality of bucks harvested in Indiana. While that wasn’t always the case, budget cutbacks forced the IDNR to hand off their trophy record keeping program to the Indian Deer Hunters Association (IDHA) in 1993. From that time forward all scoring and record keeping has been done by an army of volunteers under the guidance of the IDHA. The IDHA is a non-profit organization of sportsmen who are concerned about all things related to the health of Indiana’s deer population, from habitat and environmental issues to game laws and landowner rights.Members of the IDHA are impassioned to preserve and promote the quality of deer in Indiana. Helping hunters score their trophies furthers that goal. The data on how high the buck scored, where it was taken, when it was taken, how it was taken, and by whom is compiled and added to an ever increasing Hoosier Record Buck Program book that is published every three years. For most, the book is a memorial to trophy deer and the hunters that put in the time required to get them. To others, the book is a tool to take their passion to the next level. Along with the stories and honor rolls of trophies, what’s really of value is the ability to read where the trophy bucks are coming from and then pursue hunting opportunities in that area.

Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, some hunters don’t feel the need to get their trophy officially scored. One of the big reasons is confusion about the scoring process and just what qualifies as a “record” buck. That’s both an easy and hard question to answer. Through a complex method of measuring the antlers, a final score is attributed. If that score meets or beats set criteria, it’s a trophy. The Indiana Deer Hunter’s Association considers any legally taken, fair-chase whitetail typical buck (those that are normal, symmetrical, and well-balanced) with a minimum score of 140 inches and any non-typical (those that possess points that are abnormal in shape or position) with a minimum score of 160 inches, to be a trophy. While other organizations (P&Y, B&C, SCI, and others) measure the antlers in the same manner, their trophy criterion varies. While the method of measuring and scoring antlers is complex, there is an easy way to find out if a buck is a trophy; bring it to the IDHA booth at the Ford Indianapolis Boat, Sport, and Travel Show that is produced each year by Renfro Productions. For a small fee, a buck can be officially scored. If the buck meets the criteria, the owner of the trophy will receive a certificate and will be listed for all eternity in the Hoosier Record Buck Program book. Another perk to having the antlers scored by IDHA, is that they will assist hunters in applying for their certification with the Pope and Young Association or Boone and Crocket Club. (Please be aware each of those associations requires an additional entry fee.) Hunters should realize that the scoring fee, which is small in comparison to what is charged in neighboring states, and continued book sales are what keeps the program going. If having a buck officially scored isn’t already enough of a draw, no deer hunter can see the IDHA Hoosier Wall of Fame and not go home motivated to hunt harder the next fall. Each year, hunters from across the state bring in their trophy mounts to show the rest of us why we need to stay in the woods longer and hunt harder. Many would argue that the Hoosier Wall of Fame display is one of the largest draws of the show. IDHA member Dave Delany agrees, “It is a once-a-year display dedicated to the magnificence of Indiana whitetailed deer, that can’t be seen anywhere else.” Nothing could be a more fitting tribute to the generations of people that worked hard to make Indiana’s deer herd what it is today. Seeing the Hoosier Wall of Fame is pure inspiration to continue that work for generations to come.
