Mother’s Day Reflections

other’s Day is this month, and it has me reflecting on my journey through motherhood so far.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a “baby” mom. The baby years went by extremely slowly for me. My days felt like they were filled with endless tasks to keep my babies alive. Babies function from a place of instinct, not logic, which frustrated me to no end. “But you’re obviously tired! Just go to sleep! Go to sleeeeeep!” This was something I would scream (to myself, in my mind) at every nap and at bedtime with my first-born son, who didn’t sleep through the night by himself until he was almost 4 years old.

Now, a decade later, everyone in my house sleeps through the night, thank goodness. The babies have turned into tweens and teens, and the time seems to be flying by. No more endless numbered days — now, I’m on the verge of tears when I remember that I only have five more

summer breaks with my oldest son before he’s off to college. How can that possibly be enough time? It’s all going by so fast.

As the years tick by and my kids get older, I am enjoying this thing called motherhood even more than I thought I would. How neat to share a home with these cool people who are learning and growing into the individuals they are meant to become. How fun to listen to their thoughts and ideas. What a privilege to be here with them to experience life.

What’s in store for my journey through motherhood in the future? I don’t know, but I’m excited to find out. Happy Mother’s Day to each mom out there on your own journey!

Sewing Dreams: Tips to Spark Your Child’s Creativity

uth E. Carter has created iconic costumes for popular films like Do the Right Thing, Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She’s won many awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design. A storyteller at heart, she is the gold standard in costume design.

She credits her mother, Mabel Carter, as the earliest influence on her career. “My mom was my first storyteller,” Ruth shared with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Ruth used her mother’s sewing machine to learn to sew simple patterns. More than five decades later, she still owns that sewing machine. Ruth E. Carter’s story is a powerful example of how a parent’s influence is woven into the fabric of a person’s life. Parents can nurture creativity and empathy, teaching their children that their dreams are valid and achievable.

Nurturing Your Child’s Creative Spirit

We asked Elyse Handel, Early Childhood Education Manager at The Children’s Museum, how parents and caregivers can inspire a creative spirit in their children’s lives.

“Even at an early age, children are naturally creative and expressive,” Handel says. “They have stories, ideas, and beliefs about

WORDS BY THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

their world and who they are, and it’s our job to help foster their creative minds.”

Here are some things Handel suggests parents keep in mind to inspire and encourage their child’s creativity.

Start with Shapes, Colors and Texture

“Think about your child’s interests. Are they tactile learners who love to touch, manipulate and explore different materials?” Handel says. “Provide them with materials that are textured, different sizes, shapes and colors to create stories or express their ideas.”

As children use colors and lines when drawing or creating art, they begin to communicate. It’s one way young children tell stories and share ideas before they have the vocabulary to express their thoughts and feelings.

Provide Opportunities to Explore

Children learn through touching, creating, talking and role-playing. Exploring helps them develop a strong self-identity, feeding into personal creativity — encouraging them to share who they are with the world.

“What’s important,” Handel says, “is to create spaces and opportunities for children to freely explore and express their ideas and stories.”

Provide materials and maybe some prompts but allow your child to explore their own creativity and self-expression. Let your child take the lead.

Ask Open-ended Questions

Talk about what they’re making. Use statements like, “I see you’re creating circles in your art,” or “I see you’re using a lot of colors here.”

Avoid making assumptions about what your child creates. Every child expresses their ideas, beliefs and creativity differently. Validate your child’s work by complimenting what you see and then ask open-ended questions like, “Can you tell me more about what you’re drawing?” Let your child lead the conversation by sharing their story.

A Creative Opportunity at The Children’s Museum

Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design, the newest temporary exhibit at The Children’s Museum, is open through Sept. 7, 2025. The exhibit is full of bright, beautiful colors and interesting textures that can spark an idea or connection in your young child. It could fuel a lifelong passion. You’ll also have the opportunity to see the sewing machine that started Ruth’s journey and be reminded of the important role parents have in encouraging their children to pursue their dreams.

Summer Camp: It’s More Important Than Ever

ummer camps have always been a great way for kids to make friends, learn new skills and explore the outdoors. But now, in today's busy world, summer camp plays an even more vital role in a child’s life. Here’s why summer camp is so important — and how it helps kids become well-rounded, strong and emotionally intelligent people.

Growing Independence

In an era of helicopter parenting and constant supervision, summer camp provides a safe space for children to deal with challenges, make decisions and build resilience in a supportive environment. Camp experiences teach children valuable life skills, such as problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability and self-reliance, empowering them to face uncertainty and failures with confidence.

Fostering Cultural Awareness

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it’s more important than ever for children to develop cultural awareness. Summer camps offer an environment where children from different backgrounds, ethnicities and beliefs come together to learn, play and grow. Through these shared experiences, campers develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity, preparing them to navigate a globalized world with respect and empathy.

Promoting Mental Health

Anxiety, depression and stress can affect even young people, and the mental health benefits of summer camp cannot be overstated. Camp provides a break from academic pressures, social comparisons, and performance expectations, allowing kids to relax, have fun and recharge their emotional batteries.

Nurturing Creativity

During the summer, standardized testing and academic achievement can be put on the back burner. Summer camp offers a refreshing space for creativity, imagination and innovation to happen. Campers participate in arts and crafts, music, theater and other creative pursuits that encourage self-expression

and problem-solving skills. By embracing creative challenges, exploring new interests, and pushing the boundaries of their comfort zones, children develop a sense of curiosity and adaptability that will serve them well in an ever-changing world.

Dealing with Technology in a Digital Age

With screens and devices playing a big part in most kids’ lives, summer camp offers a much-needed break from the constant flow of technology. Or, if it’s a technology-based camp, camp can help kids learn how to use that technology purposefully. Camps give kids a chance to have fun and engage in real-life interactions with peers and mentors. Away from the distra-

ctions of their everyday lives, children can immerse themselves in hands-on activities, adventures and face-to-face communication, helping them to grow social skills, empathy and mindfulness.

The role of summer camp in shaping well-rounded, resilient and emotionally intelligent kids is huge. By providing a sanctuary for kids to be kids, summer camp offers a transformative experience that gives children the skills and values they need to thrive in a complex and interconnected world.

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

Why We Said Yes to IPS

S even years ago, we chose to send our first child to Indianapolis Public Schools. It felt like the natural choice. Both my husband and I attended public schools, and we live in the school district. At the time, we also lived near the former principal of George Washington Carver (GWC) School 87, who was very proud of his school and encouraged us to tour. We loved what we saw at this IPS Montessori school and enrolled our son in Pre-K, planning to stay just one year since another IPS school was closer to our house and we could enroll there starting in kindergarten. But the following year, we discovered such a vibrant and loving community at George Washington Carver that we didn’t want to leave and we haven’t looked back since. We now have three children at the school, and they all gain a spectrum of experiences each day that foster tolerance, independence, and creativity in a child-centered approach.

Since the implementation of the district’s Rebuilding Stronger initiative, every elementary student in IPS gets access to the Montessori model as one of eight academic model options available in each zone, alongside STEM, Reggio Emilia, International Baccalaureate, Dual Language, Exploratory, Visual and Performing Arts, and High Ability.

My family continues to choose IPS because my children receive a well-rounded academic education that prepares them for the future and nurtures their growth in all areas of life. Where they struggle, they are provided with the support they need to succeed, and where they excel, they are encouraged to go beyond and challenge themselves.

Beyond academics, IPS and its community partners have created so many extracurricular opportunities at our school, from the Monumental 5K to ukulele instruction and performances with El Sistema, to sports like futsal, basketball, track, and soccer. Indy Chess allows our kids to learn and compete in district tournaments; music programs and events celebrate the different cultures of our school, and art club, gardening club, book club, and robotics give our kids creative outlets. Most importantly, these opportunities are available at no cost to students, regardless of their income or ability.

I am just one of the tens of thousands of parents who trust IPS with our children. I have had the privilege to spend time at our school and I have seen the magic that happens when teachers pour their hearts into our children. There is no perfect system, especially when we unpack the layers of historical – and still invasive – biases and racism that have shaped our institutions. But IPS not only provides my children with a quality education, they are also actively addressing these issues, and are dedicated to serving every child in our district well, regardless of income, race, or zip code. I am so grateful for the community IPS has brought into my life, which is why earlier this year, I helped organize the IPS Parent Council.

Too often we are siloed within our own school communities, and connecting with parents outside of our schools can be difficult. The number one indicator of where a child goes to school is proximity to home. I think about this a lot. Because many of our Indianapolis neighborhoods are deliberately segregated, our schools are often similarly divided.

The IPS Parent Council is an integrated community of IPS parents and caregivers working toward the betterment of all our children and the district. It is a community first and foremost in the interest of our city's kids, but also a support system for parents navigating a complex district oversaturated with choice. Together, we share our ex

periences, celebrate the successes of our district, and brainstorm solutions to the challenges we face.

While the Parent Council was born in response to the proposed anti-public school legislation put forth by state lawmakers this session, the creation of an organized parent group is long overdue. As a Council, we believe all children are best served by a healthy, fully-funded, and integrated public school system that remains publicly accountable while providing strong support for teachers and staff.

Our goals are to amplify parent perspectives and concerns, build meaningful relationships with our school board and district leaders, advocate for proper public school funding, and ensure that our council reflects the diverse demographics of our school district. We are still in our infancy, but we prioritize a welcoming environment and accessibility. We offer childcare and translation services at our meetings. We offer ride-sharing to our events. And we offer food because we all need sustenance.

If you are an IPS parent or caregiver and support public schools, I ask you to please join us.The IPS Parent Council is your council. Please fill out this https://bit.ly/IPSparentcouncil for more information.

If you are a business member, IPS alumni, or community organizer and see the value in the success of Indianapolis Public Schools, please reach out so we can collaborate on how to support our public school system together. Email me at kphair.ips

9 Signs You Would Make a Good Foster Parent

IF YOU'VE EVER WONDERED WHETHER YOU’RE “GOOD ENOUGH” TO BECOME A FOSTER PARENT, THE ANSWER IS PROBABLY YES!

Foster parents play an essential role in a child's life, providing stability, love and guidance during difficult times. You might have wondered if you have what it takes to do such an important job that can change a child’s life for the better. If you’ve been considering fostering, here are 9 signs that suggest you would be well-suited for this rewarding journey!

1. You Have a Big Heart

Though you may open your home to a foster child, you will open your heart, as well. If you have a natural ability to put yourself in others' shoes and offer kindness without judgment, you might be well-suited to foster care. There are many ways to offer love, compassion and empathy. For instance, acknowledging the child’s feelings and experiences, showing a genuine interest in their life, and being an active listener. Your gift of empathy can help a foster child feel seen, heard and valued. What a precious gift!

2. You Are Patient and Flexible

Children in foster care often come from challenging backgrounds, making patience and adaptability essential qualities for foster parents. These kids may struggle with trust, routines or emotional regulation, maybe testing your boundaries. But they need someone who won’t give up on them. If you can remain calm and supportive, even through difficult moments, this journey may be right for you! Flexibility is equally important, as each child will have different needs. Being open to adjusting your parenting approach is key to helping them feel safe and supported.

3. You’re Willing to Learn and Grow

Foster parenting comes with a learning curve, as each child has unique needs. If you are open to training, education and self-improvement, you are on the right path. Foster care agencies provide resources to help you develop parenting techniques tailored to children who have experienced trauma or instability. Don’t forget that being a positive role model also means prioritizing self-care. Taking care of yourself emotionally and physically ensures that you can provide the best support for your foster child.

4. You Can Provide Stability and Structure

Foster children thrive in environments where they feel safe. If you can offer a home with clear expectations, a daily routine and a nurturing atmosphere, you can make a lasting impact on a child’s life. Foster parents also play a role in coordinating care for their child, such as therapy sessions, medical appointments and school meetings. Providing consistency in these areas helps to give children a sense of normalcy and security.

5. You Have a Strong Support System

Foster parenting is rewarding, but it can also be challenging. Having friends, family or a supportive community that you can lean on is key. Have a friend you can keep on speed dial for talking through the tough days, or a parent who can assist with running errands. Keep your support system nearby so you’re not navigating this journey alone!

6. You Are Willing to Work with a Child’s Biological Family

In many cases, the goal of foster care is reunification with a child’s biological family. If you are open to building positive relationships and working together with caseworkers and birth parents, you could be a great foster parent. Supporting these connections can be inconvenient or uncomfortable, but can be so meaningful to the child. If you’re willing to work with the child’s support network, that means a smoother transition for a child who will eventually return home.

7. You Can Set Boundaries with Love

Discipline in foster parenting is about guidance, not punishment. Many children in foster care have experienced emotional or physical abuse, making traditional discipline methods ineffective and harmful. Using trauma-informed techniques, such as calm-down spaces, open conversations and problem-solving exercises can teach foster children healthy ways to navigate their emotions and behaviors. It’s about setting clear, loving boundaries while maintaining patience and understanding to help children feel both safe and respected in your home.

8. You Want to Make a Difference

At its core, foster parenting is about changing lives. If you have a strong desire to provide love and support to a child who needs it, fostering could be a fulfilling way to make a big impact! Even small gestures — like showing up consistently, offering encouragement or celebrating milestones — can leave a lasting impression on a child’s life.

9. You Have Room in Your Home — and Your Heart

While practical factors like space and financial stability matter, the most important thing is having the emotional capacity to welcome a child into your life. If you’re curious about the joys and challenges of fostering, consider reaching out to local foster care agencies to explore the next steps on your journey. Or call up another foster parent and ask to pick their brain! You might be exactly the kind of person a child is waiting for.

Sensory-friendly Places to Play in Indy

These inclusive environments cater to children with sensory sensitivities.

hat if it’s too loud? What if it’s overstimulating? Will there be any place to go to get away from the excitement if my child needs a break? Building Your Child’s Self-Esteem

Help your kid feel more confident so they can handle life’s challenges.

it’s not easy to build your child’s self-esteem and confidence without dousing them in constant approval or turning their confidence into arrogance. Self-esteem and confidence are interconnected — confidence is about a person’s capabilities, while self-esteem builds on a person’s own worth. Helping your child understand their own value when it’s not at the expense of others will help their self-esteem grow, while simultaneously building compassion.

Finding small moments to boost your child’s self-esteem can give them the ability to make it through difficult moments when they’re older. There are many ways to incorporate lessons into life’s little moments.

Celebrate their attempts, yet let them fail. Whether they managed to score a run in T-ball or figured out how to solve a Rubik’s Cube, any success is worth celebrating. Similarly, if they put in the effort to try but don’t succeed, recognize the attempt. Some children aren’t natural athletes or born with an analytical gene, yet letting them know that you appreciate them trying something new will give them a boost of confidence, even if they fail. This can set them up for bigger challenges when they’re older, knowing that the attempt is worthwhile, even if the task

is difficult. Giving children the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them in a positive way gives them permission to try new things with less fear. They might fail, but learning how to avoid future mistakes is a more valuable lesson.

Avoid insults and belittling.

Sometimes, even comments made in jest, like “That was really stupid,” can chip away at a child’s self-esteem. Choose words carefully when children stumble. To help them develop a sense of self-assuredness, ask your child to reflect on ways they could have done a better job, rather than telling them how they should have done it. Changing this mindset of telling your child how to do things, versus letting them think about how it could be done differently, gives them confidence to look for solutions on their own.

Support their ambition.

I was never involved in team sports, so when my children wanted to play soccer, I initially had zero interest. When I began to learn about the game with them and made it a family effort, their own confidence grew. It helped me notice little attempts they made to utilize new skills during the game, like a pullback, even if the ball was stolen a few seconds later. It helped me learn to celebrate their small successes, instead of focus-

ing on the end result. Without knowing more about a child’s instruction, it’s easy to criticize or misunderstand. A piece of art from school might not look like much, until they explain what they learned and how they applied it to the assignment.

Keep

them

humble in

a positive way. Giving children opportunities to help others locally and globally can give them a sense of appreciation for their own skills and self-worth, especially as they age. Collect items for victims of a catastrophic event, volunteer at a food pantry or find opportunities for them to help coach younger children. Perhaps they can assist in a church nursery, teach dance to young students or teach games to children in the neighborhood. Even watching a friend’s dance recital or little league game and cheering them on boosts everyone’s self-confidence.

Encourage positive self-reflection.

When your child is hard on themself or speaks about themself negatively, take the opportunity to redirect their feelings and find ways to look at a situation positively. Once children can begin thinking of small successes as positive outcomes, they’ll gradually build on their selfworth, which leads to greater self-esteem. These little conversations to reframe challenges can build over time to help them battle negative thoughts as they enter teenage years. Ultimately, positive thoughts and conversations can lead to better mental health and less anxiety.

Create successes.

If your child is facing a rough patch and struggling to accomplish anything, consider building their self-esteem from a situation where they can’t fail. Perhaps they help

with dinner by adding ingredients, feed a family pet, or clear plates from a table after dinner. Find opportunities that children can do that will guarantee a successful outcome, then give them credit for achieving it.

Be a good example.

When you make mistakes, show your child how you learn from them. If you

fail at something, let your child know that it’s OK.

Thinking of ways to support your kid and their choices is ultimately the best way to help them build self-esteem and give them a sense of reaching goals. These small moments of positivity can be more valuable than constant praise, and be a step toward preparing them to become happy and healthy adults.

I am very passionate about finding solutions to problems in society, and I have been able to do this through Cathedral’s AP Seminar and AP Research courses. I am most proud of the progress I have made in both courses and the path it has set me on!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

After high school, I will be attending American University in Washington, D.C. where I will be majoring in Public Health. I hope to gain extensive knowledge and experience about the world’s health through mentors and study abroad programs.

HOW HAS CATHEDRAL PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE?

Cathedral has opened me to a community that constantly strives for excellence, and that has made me reach places beyond my goals. This school has taught me to not place a limit on what I can achieve and to take advantage of my opportunities!

Madeline Bohley – Grade 8, The Orchard School

WHAT SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

There are many school achievements I am proud of from my time here at Orchard. However, I am most proud of my work ethic and ability to advocate for myself in areas that don’t come easily to me, such as math. I think that determination and confidence matter most!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER MIDDLE SCHOOL?

Next year, I will be going to Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. I hope to continue to pursue my interest in reading and writing. I also hope to find opportunities to build upon the public speaking skills Orchard has given me. I hope to stay motivated and learn new things.

HOW HAS ORCHARD SCHOOL PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE?

The teachers at Orchard are the best teachers in the world! They have shown me the kind of support that I hope to emulate for the people in my life. Orchard has academically prepared me for high school, but even more importantly, Orchard has made me a better person.

Elaine Hughes – Grade 8, St. Richard’s Episcopal School

WHAT SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I am most proud of when I received the Andrew Downs Ponader Award, an award for academic excellence and my participation in the Grade 8 musical. Also, in the “We the People” competition, my Unit won first place in the state competition for Unit 3.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR HIGH SCHOOL?

I will be attending Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory High School. After my experiences with music at St. Richard’s, and my participation in the Grade 8 musical, I plan to pursue my interest in the arts.

HOW HAS ST. RICHARD'S PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE?

St. Richard’s has given me so many opportunities that have helped me experience the world in different ways, such as traveling to Canada and Italy and community service opportunities through our service club where I volunteer at Mid North Food Pantry.

Kennedi Queen Mariana Green – Senior, International School of Indiana

WHAT SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I am proud to be the leader of the Black Student Union. It's been an honor to lead and create a space for black students to share experiences and keep our community informed about issues affecting the black community. Hosting the BSU assemblies helped me to build confidence.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

I’m majoring in African American studies at Howard University, and I want to be a professor at a HBCU. My major is intertwined with my identity. I want to be a vessel that preserves, studies and shares the value of African American history and its roots in our society.

HOW HAS ISI PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR FUTURE?

ISI has given me a global mind, deepened my appreciation and reverence for education, and exposed me to people from diverse backgrounds. I’m not intimidated by challenging academics and have created space for myself as a learner to fail, be curious, and continuously evolve.
