INDIANAPOLIS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO) reaches over 30,000 people annually through its seven-concert series, arts partner services, education and community programs, and radio broadcast. Marking its 37th season in 2021-2022, the ICO is under the direction of Music Director and Principal Conductor Matthew Kraemer. The ICO is the professional Orchestra-in-Residence at the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts, Butler Arts Center.

Comprised of 34 professional musicians, the ICO advances and promotes music composed for the small orchestra through professional concert performances and education and outreach programs. The ICO annually presents a concert series that features internationally recognized guest artists, superior local talent, and aspiring young soloists, and showcases the talents of living composers. The ICO’s artistic programming delivers on a brand promise of “ICO-Intimate-Classic-Original” concert experiences, utilizing innovative program formats and intimate concert venues.

The ICO takes an active role in perpetuating the art form by commissioning and performing works of living composers, as well as venerable masterworks. The ICO also has the distinction of presenting several world and American premieres.

The ICO is featured prominently in local media with its weekly radio broadcast on WFYI, 90.1 FM. Featuring selections from ICO concerts, this strategic initiative

increases community awareness of the ICO and enhances its professional image.

In 2017, the ICO was featured on the PBS broadcast of “A Festival of Carols with Sylvia McNair.” Premiered in 2016, James Aikman’s Peacemakers became the subject of an Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary in 2017. In May 2015, the ICO released its first commercial CD, Momentum 21.

The ICO is frequently engaged to provide professional accompaniment for area arts and educational institutions, such as the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and American Pianists Association. In 2021-2022, the ICO will serve in its 15th year as Orchestra- inResidence for the Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival. Through its affiliation with the three-day immersive educational event, the ICO sponsors a nationwide competition for the composition of new works for chamber orchestra.

In 2016, the ICO collaborated nationally with the American Composers Orchestra’s “EarShot” program as the first chamber orchestra to present orchestral readings of new works by five emerging American composers. Offering a full range of education and outreach programs for all ages, ICO Funtastic Classics and Residency programs take ICO musicians into area schools for live programs or classroom coaching. Additionally, the ICO partners with Indy Parks to present free, family-friendly concerts each summer.

We hope you experience familiar favorites and discover new works as you engage with the ICO over this season. The past 18 months have proven that our community recognizes the value of the arts and the mission of the ICO. We are distinctly honored by your support and your attendance as we return to more traditional concert experiences. You’ve come to expect artistic excellence and innovative programming at the ICO, and this season will not disappoint.

Our commitment to new music includes two world premiere performances, works by living composers on almost every concert, multi-media productions, and cross disciplinary collaborations.

Every year we rely on the support of our community to continue. This season we return with our full programming, but we acknowledge that we likely will be building on audiences as the season continues.

We welcome all new audiences and those returning whether live or virtual.

Music Director & Conductor MATTHEW KRAEMER Recognized for his “musical sensitivity” and “energized sense of interpretation”, Matthew Kraemer is quickly making his mark among young American conductors for his inspired performances and versatility. The Buffalo News notes, “He presents a tall, dignified and stately podium presence with a quite clear beat, a good sense of shaping melodic lines, and an all business attitude that focused on the music without any histrionics.” Kraemer was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra in 2015 and has extended his commitment with the ICO through 2023. He additionally serves as Music Director of the Butler County Symphony (PA), the Marion Philharmonic (IN), and Artistic Advisor of the Muncie Symphony (IN). His active guest conducting schedule includes appearances with many of the nation’s finest orchestras, including the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Columbus, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Nashville, North Carolina, Saint Louis, Spokane, Syracuse, and Toledo symphony orchestras, as well as Canada’s Mississauga Symphony, Niagara Symphony, and Hamilton Philharmonic and in Europe with the Vidin Philharmonic and the Orquesta de Cadaqués. Upcoming highlights include performances with Tessa Lark, Richard Lin, Jinjoo Cho, Sterling Elliott, Michael Cavanaugh, Dee Daniels, the PRISM Quartet, and Dance Kaleidoscope. Future guest conducting engagements include the Arkansas Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, and Rochester Philharmonic.

Kraemer served as associate conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic from 2009 to 2014, where he regularly led the orchestra in each of its concert series. A passionate advocate for new music, he has performed the works of many living composers during his career and has led the American Composers Orchestra’s EarShot readings with several orchestras.

The ICO was awarded a Virginia B. Toulmin commission for emerging women composers under his leadership. Kraemer served as Music Director of the Erie Chamber Orchestra (20122017) and associate conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (2007- 2010).

Increasingly recognized for his committed advocacy of music education and his devotion to young audiences, he currently serves on the faculty at New England Music Camp, where he conducts the symphony orchestra and teaches chamber music. The Buffalo Philharmonic’s award-winning education concerts grew exponentially under his leadership, expanding to reach over 40,000 students throughout western New York. He played an integral role in the creation of the orchestra’s successful live broadcast concerts with Time Warner Cable, as well as implementing new collaborations with many organizations in the Buffalo community.

His performances are broadcast regularly on NPR’s Performance Today.

Recipient of the distinguished Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship and the Bruno Walter Career Development Grant, Kraemer served a residency with the Vienna Philharmonic at the 2006 Salzburg Music

Equally at home in the opera and ballet pit, his operatic credits include fullystaged productions of The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Happy Birthday Wanda June (world premiere), Trouble in Tahiti, and Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park (American professional premiere), as well as ballet productions with Virginia Ballet Theatre, Ohio Ballet, Dance Kaleidoscope, Neglia Ballet Artists, and Todd Rosenlieb Dance. He has performed with many leading artists, including Lang Lang, Awadagin Pratt, Christopher O’Riley, Norman Krieger, Philippe Quint, Jennifer Koh, Elmar Oliveira, Rachel Barton Pine, David Kim, Gary Karr, Richard Stolzman, Wu Man, Bela Fleck, Mark O’Connor, Ben Folds, Chris Botti, Jim Brickman, the Indigo Girls, Il Volo, Wynona Judd, and Natalie Merchant, among others. A frequent collaborator with Broadway superstar Idina Menzel, he served as conductor for many of her symphony engagements nationwide.

An Indiana native, Kraemer studied conducting in Vienna, Austria with Salvador Mas Conde and was twice a fellowship conductor at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen.

Additionally, he has participated in the National Arts Center Conductor’s Program in Ottawa Canada. His conducting teachers include David Zinman, Robert Spano, Stanley DeRusha, and Jorma Panula. Kraemer is a graduate of Butler University and the University of Nevada, where he assisted former Cincinnati Symphony concertmaster Phillip Ruder. An accomplished

violinist, he was a member of the Nightingale String Quartet. His principal violin teachers include Phillip Ruder, Herbert Greenberg, and Larry Shapiro. When he is not performing, Kraemer enjoys cooking, running, and reading.

He and his wife, Megan, reside in Indianapolis with their sons Gabriel and Nathaniel.

But Fredersen discovers Maria as well and conjures up a sinister plan. He commissions the scientist Rotwang to develop a robot form of Maria, which he will use to gain influence over the workers. The plan works, but Freder and Maria are able to hinder the catastrophe in the last minute. The mass hysteria turns and directs its rage toward the robot Maria, who is burned at the stake. Freder and Maria form a new brotherly community among the classes - Fredersen offers his hand in reconciliation, true to the motto of the film: “the mediator between the hand and the brain must be the heart”.

What is a Chamber Orchestra?

A Chamber Orchestra simply is a small orchestra of up to 50 musicians – compared to larger size symphony orchestras. Some works frequently performed by symphony orchestras were actually composed for a chamber orchestra.

How should I dress for a concert?

We want you to feel comfortable, so we don’t have a dress code. Some people might dress up, but this is completely voluntary and a personal choice. The musicians and conductor will have a more formal dress code to achieve a unified look for the orchestra.

What does a conductor do?

The conductor sets the tempo, shapes the sounds and controls the interpretation of a composition. For instance, if the conductor wants to emphasize a certain melodic phrase, they will communicate this to the musicians via gestures. Much of the work of a conductor happens before the performance: while studying the musical score on their own, and during rehearsals.

What does a concertmaster do?

The concertmaster plays the first violin and serves as a leader between the musicians and the conductor. The concertmaster initiates the tuning of the orchestra, assures synchronized bowings of all violinists (so that a unified look and sound are achieved), and helps the conductor communicate their interpretation to the musicians.

Is it OK to clap between movements?

Yes! We appreciate your enthusiasm. You might find that some people wait with applause until the last movement has finished – and this is OK too because it acknowledges the unity of the work.

What makes a piece a symphony?

A symphony is a large-scale orchestral work that is typically divided into 4 movements.

In many cases, the first and last movements of a symphony are fast and dramatic, the 2nd movement is more lyrical and the 3rd movement dancelike. However, creative license acknowledges that rules are made to be broken, so there are deviations.

What is a concerto?

A concerto highlights one or, more rarely, multiple soloists. There are concertos for almost any musical instrument, but the most frequent concertos are for the piano or the violin. The soloist will be positioned in front of the orchestra and the music will often highlight the virtuosic skills of the soloist.

Most concertos are in three movements with a lyrical second movement and a fiery 3rd movement.

STERLING ELLIOTT Cello

Cellist Sterling Elliott is a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and the winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition.

His orchestral appearances in the 2021/2022 season include Haydn Cello Concerto No. 2 with the San Antonio, Richmond, West Virginia symphony orchestras and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra; the Popper Hungarian Fantasy with the Orlando Philharmonic and Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, and the Elgar Concerto with the Midland Symphony.

He will appear in a Tuesday Matinee recital at Merkin Hall at the Kaufman Music Center, Ashmont Hill Chamber Music Society, and Tuesday Musicale, as well as chamber music at Festival Mozaic and with Shai Wosner and friends for Peoples Symphony Concerts.

During the summer of 2021 Sterling debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl performing the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations led by Bramwell Tovey, with further appearances at Chamberfest Cleveland, and Music@Menlo.

Previous orchestral engagements have included the Philadelphia Orchestra with Yannick Nezet-Seguin, the New York Philharmonic with Jeffrey Kahane, the Boston Symphony with Thomas Wilkins, the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony with Mei Ann Chen, the Dallas Symphony, Virginia Symphony and Buffalo Philharmonic among others.

Sterling has enjoyed a simple and humble musical journey. As the youngest of 3 siblings, he did not want to play the cello

but the violin like his older brother and sister.

After a bit of encouragement, he completed The Elliott Family String Quartet by learning to play the cello at the age of three under the direction of Suzuki Cello teacher Susan Hines.

He went on to make his concerto debut at the age of 7 by winning the Junior Division of the PYO Concerto Competition, and later the 2014 Richmond Symphony Concerto Competition, the Bay Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Sterling has a long history with the Sphinx Organization where he first received 2nd place in the 2013 National Sphinx Competition Junior Division, then won the 2014 Junior Division. In 2016 he received the Isaac Stern Award by the Sphinx Organization and toured with the Sphinx Virtuosi in 2018 before winning in 2019.

He is a two-time alum of NPR’s From the Top where he was a recipient of a scholarship from The Jack Kent Cooke

Foundation and performed several concerts in Switzerland at the 2019 World Economic Forum. He is a Young Strings of America ambassador for SHAR Strings. In 2019, he was the first recipient of The National Arts Club’s Herman and Mary Neuman Music Scholarship Award.

Sterling is currently represented for worldwide General Management by Colbert Artists in New York City. He currently performs on a 1741 Gennaro Gagliano cello on loan through the Robert F. Smith Fine String Patron Program, in partnership with the Sphinx Organization.

Sterling Elliott is currently a Kovner Fellow at The Juilliard School where he is pursuing his Masters of Music degree studying with Joel Krosnick and Clara Kim. He completed his undergraduate degree in cello performance at Juilliard in May 2021.

Sound and Fury (2019) ANNA CLYNE

BORN March 9,1980 in London Scottish composer Anna Clyne studied music at the University of Edinburgh and the Manhattan School of Music. She has served as Composer in Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Ricardo Muti, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with Marin Alsop, the Berkeley Symphony and L’Orchestre National d’Île-de-France. She is currently Associate Composer with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and a mentor composer for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s DeGaetano Composer Institute. She has been nominated twice for a Grammy Award for her Prince of Clouds and Night Ferry. Her elegy Within Her Arms opened the 2021-2022 season with the New York Philharmonic.

Sound and Fury takes its title from Shakespeare’s famous soliloquy for the title character in Macbeth. Late in the work the words will be spoken by a narrator. Clyne said she was inspired both by Shakespeare’s words and also Haydn’s Symphony #60, which is called “Il distratto” (“the distracted”) – the appellation comes from the play by JeanFrançois Regnard. She stated: “My intention with Sound And Fury is to take the listener on a journey that is both invigorating – with ferocious string gestures that are flung around the orchestra, and reflective – with haunting melodies that emerge and recede.” The work was premiered by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with conductor Pekka Kuusisto.

Meanwhile in Indianapolis: Mayor Joe Hogsett is elected to his second term as Mayor; the IndyGo Red Line bus services begins; plans are announced for the city’s bicentennial celebration; Carmel HS wins the large school division state titles in both football and basketball; the Indiana State School of Music champion ensembles are Carmel (concert band), Avon (orchestra) and Franklin Central (choir); Polesitter Simon Pagenaud holds off Alexander Rossi and Takuma Sato to win one of the closest Indy 500 races.

Sound and Fury is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets with marimba, chimes and strings. Its duration is about seventeen minutes.

Concerto for Cello #2 in D Major (1783) FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN BORN March 31,1732 in Rohrau, Austria DIED May 31, 1809 in Vienna

The main part of Haydn’s early career was in the service of the Esterhazy family, which had castles in the present-day countries of Austria and Hungary. His title was Kapellmeister, and his duties were to write music for family events and palace concerts and to conduct the orchestra. He commented that this position allowed him to hone his craft and be creative: “My prince was pleased with all my works.

I was commended, and as conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what strengthened and what weakened an effect, and thereupon improve, substitute, omit, and try new things. I was cut off from the world, and there was no one around to mislead or harass me, and so I was forced to become original.” Part of his experimentation was to use the cello as a solo instrument, as its most common role was serving as the bass voice in the orchestra. He wrote tonight’s work for cellist Anton Kraft (1749-1820), who served as the principal cellist of the Esterhazy Orchestra from 1778 until it was disbanded in 1790 following the death of Nikolaus Esterhazy, which was Haydn’s motivation to return to London, where he would write many of his masterworks.

The concerto begins with one of Haydn’s most memorable melodies played by the orchestra. The wind section consists of just four instruments – two oboes and two horns – and this allows them to be heard quite clearly, and even to play short passages as a quartet without the strings. The cello soloist enters with a decorated version of the main theme rather than the more common contemporary practice of repeating that theme verbatim. The cadenza would likely have been improvised by Kraft, as this was an expected skill for a solo musician of the eighteenth century. The first movement is quite expansive and accounts for more than half of the performance time of the work. The second movement is in three parts, mostly defined by the shift in the second section to the INTIMATE CLASSIC ORIGINAL

minor key. Unlike most slow movements from the era, it contains a second opportunity for the soloist to improvise a cadenza. The finale is a sprightly dance in a rousing 6/8 meter, a time signature that is often associated with folk dances. A brilliant and furious passage on the lowest string of the cello – low C – leads to another brief solo cadenza, which then transitions back to the original theme and then the closing of the work.

The concerto is scored for solo cello, two oboes, two horns and strings. The duration is about twenty-five minutes.

Meanwhile in Indianapolis: We are still several decades from becoming a city; the Treaty of Paris cedes the current state of Indiana land to the United States; George Rogers Clark is named surveyor of the Bounty lands in present day Indiana; the following year Thomas Jefferson was the lead writer on the process for organizing the territory into individual states.

Metamorphosen (1945) RICHARD STRAUSS

BORN June 11,1864 in Munich DIED September 8, 1949 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany German composer Richard Strauss lived a long and interesting life – he was an adult for both world wars, the invention of the automobile and the airplane, the shift in music from the height of the Romantic era through landmarks such as the Second Viennese atonal school of Schönberg and others, the premiere of The Rite of Spring in 1913, the rise of jazz and so many other developments. Metamorphosen comes from the twilight of his life, as he was 80 when it was completed near the end of the Second World War in Europe. It was a terrible time for the country and for the Strauss family. Strauss biographer Kurt Wilhelm, writing in his terrific book Richard Strauss – An Intimate Portrait, relates a tale from his Jewish daughter-in-law, whom Strauss was able to keep safe by holding her in his house in Garmische-Partenkirchen in southern Bavaria: “We knew that many members of my family had been taken to Theresienstadt and we thought there must be a labor camp there, where they were collecting Jewish people before resettling them somewhere. We knew nothing of the extermination and wouldn’t have believed it. Now and then we received postcards with a few words of greeting. My old grandmother died there – we heard about that. During the war Papa [Richard Strauss] traveled from Vienna to Dresden. He stopped in Theresienstadt and wanted to visit my grandmother. He went to the camp-gate and said: ‘My name is Richard Strauss, I want to see Frau Neumann.’ The SS guards thought he was a lunatic and sent him packing.” Twenty-six of her relatives died in the concentration camps.

Metamorphosen was written in memory of the destroyed and badly damaged opera houses in Europe during the war. Strauss is known mostly for his magnificent tone-poems and his operas, such as Der Rosenkavalier (1911), Salome (1905), Arabella (1933) and Ariadne auf Naxos (1912/rev. 1916). He was also a wellrespected operatic conductor. Again quoting Kurt Wilhelm: “He began to write the full score of 26

Metamorphosen, his ‘study for 23 solo strings’, on 13 March 1945, the day after the destruction of the Vienna Opera. The commission for a piece of this scale had come from Paul Sacher, founder and director of the Basle [sic] Collegium Musicum, in the previous September, through the mediation of Willi Schuh and Karl Böhm. It is a deeply moving expression of his emotions as he saw European culture in ruins; a sense of tragedy is relieved by surges of happier memories, then the music plunges back into even more profound sorrow.” Strauss conducted the premiere of the work in Zurich in January 1946.

The work is scored for twenty-three string players and its duration is about twenty-seven minutes.

In the News in 1945: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt returns from a Yalta Conference appearing thin and frail, then suffers a cerebral hemorrhage and dies at the age of 63. Harry Truman is sworn in as the 33rd President. On May 8 VE Day – victory in Europe – is celebrated.

On July 30 the USS Indianapolis is sunk and on August 6 the city of Hiroshima is decimated by an atomic bomb. Charles de Gaulle is elected President of France and Winston Churchill is voted out as the British Prime Minister. An impressive number of future musical stars are born, including Eric Clapton, Itzhak Perlman, Bob Marley, Carly Simon, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger, Keith Jarrett, Pete Townshend, Davy Jones and John Fogerty.

Meanwhile in Indianapolis: The population is almost 400,000 and Republican Robert Tyndall is the Mayor; Frank E. McKinney and Donie Bush are the administrators of the Indianapolis Indians baseball team and Bill Burwell is the manager; Fabien Sevitzky is the Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Evansville Bosse defeated South Bend Riley for the championship of Hoosier high school basketball
