The 39 Club was founded in 1956 by a group of commercial travellers and reps who worked in the West End of London and who had survived the second world war. As the name indicates the number of members is limited to 39 and for many years through the 60`s and 70`s it was quite literally a badge of honour in what was then a thriving menswear business in the West end and the city of London.

Speaker biographies Eric Musgrave Commentator, events host and consultant to the fashion business Eric Musgrave is one of the best-known names in fashion journalism. Since 1980, Eric has been observing and commenting on the entire fashion sector, from yarn production and manufacturing to high-street retailing and ecommerce. He is best known to many for twice being editor of Drapers, in 2000-2006 and again in 2013-2015. During both stints he was named Business Media Editor of the Year for his work on Drapers. Today Eric still contributes to Drapers and to online trade title The Industry.Fashion. He also works as a consultant to selected companies in the sector.

Nigel Pinnock Owner, NP Agency This year, Nigel celebrates 40 years in the wonderful world of menswear.

Together with his wife Sarah, Nigel works with European collections including A Fish named Fred, Alberto, Smarty, Roy Robson (London and southern UK), and Ingram UK. Member of The 39 Club.

Matthew Rawlings Commercial Director, Douglas and Grahame UK & Ireland Having spent the last 20 years working as Menswear Director for the Coes group, overseeing the menswear buy for their physical and virtual stores, Matthew switched to wholesale in January 2022. He now works for D&G who own menswear brands Remus Uomo, Drifter, Daniel Grahame and Douglas, as well as boyswear brand 1880 Club.

Marc Querol Managing Director, Double H Agency After more than 10 years in the Fashion industry, covering different parts of the business in Double H Agency, marketing, PR, communication and sales, Marc is now Managing Director. The agency started in 2015 and has a focus on all digital aspects, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Double H Agency became one of the first agencies to have social media channels in the UK. I have always thought that there is a big gap in digital communication that we try to cover every year in the agency. The fact that I have been working on different radio and TV channels in the past gives me have a different perception of the potential of digital communication. Every year, I try to understand the new needs of the fashion sector and discover new ways of communication but time is always a key point to be able to achieve good results. But in Double H agency we have considered digital communication a key point for the company and brands development in the UK, making a boomerang effect that always comes back to us with great positive reactions.

On top, my passion for media and to keep an eye on the latest in Marketing and Communication has been always an easy way to achieve where we are now after these pandemic times.

Simon Whitaker CEO, Master Debonair Simon Whitaker is CEO of Master Debonair who are a menswear independent retailer with three stores which are in; East Boldon, Sunderland and Chesterfield as well as an ecommerce store with a further store in Glasgow opening in 2022.

Simon and his business partner Eve launched Master Debonair in February 2016 after Simon lost his Dad suddenly in November 2015. Bob, Simon’s Dad loved his clothes so Simon wanted to wear something a little different for his funeral. Simon looked for a tie clip and pocket square that had a little more detail than most but was disappointed he couldn’t find anything. So the idea of Master Debonair was born. He wanted to find products with detail that were different to what you could buy on the High Street. So he found a number of suppliers, built a website in his office at home and launched Master Debonair online February 2016.

Simon and Eve built up and online following via social media and instantly saw sales come in online. They then decided to find a shop in East Boldon, the village they lived in and opened that in April 2016. Both had no b2c retail experience and wanted to create a destination where the shops were like a home/hotel lounge where customers felt at ease shopping. Simon and Eve had over 30 years combined sales and marketing experience prior to setting up Master Debonair. Customers from day one travelled from all over the country to visit the Boldon shop which was expanded to 3,000 sq ft in July 2019. Chesterfield was added in November 2019 as well as Sunderland in August 2021. Master Debonair has grown to a £2.5m revenue business with 30 staff, with plans to increase the number of stores in the coming years with Glasgow due to open in late 2022.

Toby Snowdon Owner Sales agency and consultancy Toby started his career in men’s fashion 13 years ago working in premium independent retailers in the North East of England alongside education. These included ‘The House’ in Yarm and ‘Leaf’ in Newcastle. After graduating with an economics degree, he launched his own menswear store selling both in store and online.

During this time Toby had opened a second store and also began working alongside his dad, David, selling brands wholesale. As their agency business grew, he followed this avenue full time. Toby and David have been operating their agency together for the past five years, currently representing Digel, Casamoda, Peregrine and Berwick 1707. Alongside this they have consulted for companies such as Wolverine Worldwide.

Their aim is to create an in-house level of service, aiding and supporting retail partners to mutually benefit from the beautiful ranges their brand partners produce. Toby’s experience on both the retail and wholesale side of the sector has proved invaluable, not only in understanding the retailers approach to decision making, but also the brands approach to range development in diverse marketplaces.

Kevin Stone Sales and Marketing Director, Baird Group Responsible for Group and Brand Marketing across retail, VM and wholesale.
