ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

“Taking classes in the IWU Division of Business gave me the opportunity to experience a variety of di erent disciplines and figure out which areas appealed most to me to pursue in a career. Assignments and projects were demanding in various ways, but they served the necessary function of stretching students to adapt to new situations and challenges. One of the biggest things I appreciated was the smaller class sizes which allowed professors to become more directly invested in their students’ academic and personal development.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

“The Management Program really instilled a desire in me to do all the small things right; having a stellar resume, a captivating cover letter, and networking through LinkedIn. An aspect that stands out to me from my time at IWU and in the business division was how professors spoke into my life through one on one meetings and even a follow up dinner or email a er I had graduated. I feel extremely blessed to have been able to attend IWU, learn from such knowledgeable and caring professors, and overall grow in my faith.”

MAXWELL CENTER FOR BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP

The Maxwell Center is home to the DeVoe Division of Business and Social Sciences, as well as many administrative offices that keep the campus daily operations running smoothly year round. Many campus tours begin in the Admissions Department, which is housed on the first floor.

The DeVoe Division of Business is located on the second floor of the Maxwell Center where the faculty are housed adjacent to an open area for students to come up and study or meet with their professors and advisors. Each business student is assigned an advisor that they meet with every semester to plan courses and discuss their future plans. There are six classrooms located on the first floor which make it convenient for students to meet with faculty directly after class if needed.

Internships

We believe hands-on experience is one of the best ways to be equipped for a successful lifelong career. That is why we require all students to complete a supervised internship in their field of study. We help our students in the process of finding an internship through advising meetings, networking opportunities, and our contacts throughout the Northern Indiana communities.

Travel

Kingdom Advisors is a conference held in Orlando, FL each spring. Finance students are given the opportunity to attend the conference at a minimal charge and network with professional finance representatives as well as hear professionally renowned speakers.

“The Kingdom Advisors Conference provided a platform for me to interact with other coaches and to hear their struggles and successes. I felt very empowered by being welcomed into a space full of established professionals.”

As a result of the internship itself, I got a very good look into what life looks like as an auditor, what all goes into the day-today operations, and I even got to get my hands dirty in some of the actual auditing. This experience was extremely valuable above the credits that were earned. I greatly enjoyed my time there and am grateful I was provided the opportunity to work with such amazing people.

The DeVoe Division of Business often offers a travel course option during our May term. This course provides students with the opportunity to briefly immerse themselves in other cultures so that they can better understand how businesses operate elsewhere in the world. Students will explore firsthand how business decision-making is impacted by cultural, political, economic and social differences as well as the cultural complexities of differing values and beliefs. Students will also explore the role that American business can play in mutually beneficial relationships across borders. Learning to adapt to the various challenges associated with international travel and living in another culture will be a significant part of the students’ experience.

Events

MEET THE FIRMS

Meet the Firms is an evening hosted by the DeVoe Division of Business with accounting firms and students from across Indiana. It’s an evening for freshmen through senior students to meet and introduce themselves to potential internships and employment.

“For any new students that are on the fence about going to an event like Meet the Firms, I would encourage you to take the step because you never know what it can do for your life going forward.”- Aaron Culver, Accounting Senior

GRAND IN SIXTY

Grand In Sixty is an elevator pitch competition where students have 60 seconds to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges and a general audience. Two winners are chosen and awarded $1000. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to practice concise presentation skills and start to think innovatively.

“Grand In Sixty is a great opportunity for community members and students to pitch a business idea and meet other entrepreneurs in the area. The event creates a unique space for collaborative minds and brilliant ideas to collide.” - Evan King, 2020

WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

Women are underrepresented in organizations across the United States and globally, and the gender disparity in the pipeline proves greatest at senior leadership levels. The benefits of women in the workplace are clear. Women bring diverse perspectives and experiences which can prompt creativity, stability and resilience within organizations. Women in the Workplace is a group of students, faculty, staff and professional women from the community who meet regularly to learn and grow together. They are dedicated to helping women step outside of their comfort zones and achieve their ambitions. This group provides students with an understanding of organizational and social barriers in order to prepare them for successful career advancement within organizations. The Women in the Workplace group provides guidance, support, coaching and role-modeling to women students.

Student Organizations

At IWU, Business students experience an education that does not end at the completion of a course or graduation from the major. We encourage our students to engage in memberships with professional organizations and in this way create opportunities to continue learning outside the classroom and beyond the University.

The purpose of the IWUCA is to supplement classroom learning by helping students to apply the accounting and finance knowledge they have acquired in the classroom and pass that knowledge and experience on to the next generation of students. Students cooperate in a fun-filled learning environment as they seek to master those things that will prepare them for the great profession of accounting.

Orr Fellowship Spotlight

Jaqui Fernandez, a senior in the DeVoe Division of Business during the 2020-21 academic year, was selected to join the Orr Fellowship as one of only six percent of top-tier college seniors selected to join the largest cohort of Orr Fellows to date.

After graduating with degrees in Marketing and International Relations, Fernandez will begin at Lev, a marketing focused consultancy.

“Jaqui exemplifies all the qualities and intangibles that the Orr Fellowship program looks for in an individual,” Andre Payne, Assistant Professor of Marketing, said. “Not only is she a high achieving student who was held in high esteem by her peers, but she is also a young person that exemplifies character, scholarship, and leadership. From the moment I met her during our first advising appointment her freshman year, she exhibited a humble confidence that is still with her today.”

In addition to her position, she will participate in Orr Fellowship’s programming dedicated to nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit and developing strong leadership skills. She will also enter Orr Fellowship’s networking communities via the program and help recruit the cohort of Orr Fellows.

“My professors and peers have constantly challenged me throughout my time at IWU to achieve my goals. My advisor and professor, Professor Payne, especially pushed me out of my comfort zone by helping me discover internships and experience that allows me to expand my skills and knowledge. I would not be the person I am today without the help of everyone who has poured into me during my time at IWU. I am excited to now also be a part of the Orr community where I can soak up as much as possible from other peers and business leaders.”

Employment in business and financial operations occupations is projected to grow five percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 476,200 new jobs. Globalization, a growing economy, and a complex tax and regulatory environment are expected to continue to lead to strong demand for accountants and auditors. In addition, increasing usage of data and market research in order to understand customers and product demand, and to evaluate marketing strategies, will lead to growing demand for market research analysts.

The median annual wage for business and financial occupations was $69,820 in May 2019, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $39,810.
