Indiana Wesleyan University’s Nursing emblem is displayed on the cover of our program. The cross on the Nursing emblem is a reminder of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The triangle on the emblem represents the Trinity; the priority of relationships: God, others, self; and the triune nature of man: body, soul, and spirit. In nursing, we are concerned with the wholeness of an individual in all these areas.
The emblem displays the colors, red, white, and black, which were chosen for their message that portrays the prophetic and completed story of Isaiah 53:4-5. These verses tell us that Christ
“...hath borne our grief and carried our sorrows…” He was “wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
The stripes and colors on the emblem are for His suffering and our redemption. Black represents our transgressions, red signifies Jesus’ blood shed for us, and white portrays God’s purity.
The anointing of the hands with oil honors the spiritual aspects found in physical care and represents the coming or filling of the Holy Spirit. Human touch is such a crucial part of health care. We pray the students’ hands will bring comfort and healing to those they touch, to the honor and glory of God.
During the ceremony, the Nursing students will receive a lamp, which is part of the Nursing emblem. This lamp is a replica of the lamp carried by Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War as she provided care for wounded soldiers.
In 1908, the Gideons began distributing free Bibles. Members of The Gideons International currently average distribution of over 70 million Bibles annually. Members from the local Gideons International Association donate white New Testament Bibles for our Nursing students. Spiritual care is a vital component of our Nursing curriculum.
I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.
I shall abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and shall not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.
I shall do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.
I shall be loyal to my work and devoted towards the welfare of those committed to my care.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
