But the compact between business and government must be a two-way street. Businesses must feel secure that their good faith efforts to uphold the law, and to protect workers and consumers, will not come back to bite them.

Withstanding a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic with remarkable agility and resilience, Australian businesses transformed their day-to-day operations in response to fast moving public health developments and changing government requirements.

On 1 September 2021, the former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian appeared to tell employers to make sure workers were vaccinated: “If you’re a business, start dusting off your COVIDsafety plan. Make sure your employees are vaccinated so we can get back to life at 70 per cent double-dose vaccination.”

Enduring success for Australian-made goods will be driven by quality, experts believe. COVID-19 caused a switch in Australian consumer preferences. Concerns about health, quality and availability combined to bring the provenance of purchases into sharp focus, while a desire to support the domestic economy and create jobs during the crisis saw more consumers prioritise locally made goods. Fad or ongoing favour?

Research from Roy Morgan2 shows 93 per cent of Australians were more likely to buy products made in Australia in 2020 – up from 87 per cent the previous year. A Brand New World3 study by Junkee Media also shows a growing preference for local goods, particularly among young Australians, with 55 per cent saying they were buying more local and Australianmade products since the pandemic. More than 45 per cent also say they’ve saved money as a result. “By supporting the Australian-made push, consumers are helping to future-proof 2. But will the renewed consumer focus on Australian-made goods be a passing fad or ongoing priority?

Jens Goennemann, Managing Director, Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre, believes loyalty will only go so far. “If we think we can bet on a pandemic to boost manufacturing, we are ill-advised,” he says.

“Today, a customer may say they’ll continue to proudly support ‘Made in Australia’, but if the product doesn’t stand up in quality to what they can get from Singapore, Korea, Germany or the US, that loyalty will fade very quickly. People will pay for quality. Just being an Australian manufacturer is not good enough.”

Reason to be thankful

Time to focus on manufacturing

A once-a-century pandemic has confronted the nation with its toughest challenges since World War II. There can be no denying the hardship experienced by many Australians. But we should remember some big reasons to be thankful. Early in the pandemic there were fears of mass death, wholesale economic collapse and massive sustained unemployment. But Australians pulled together. Most of us acted with common sense, and governments across Australia implemented precautions. Businesses deserve great credit – rapidly transforming practices in response to emerging risks, despite deep uncertainty and revenue downturns. That’s not to say responses were always perfect. Indeed, our cover story

DOORS

talks about failures to protect businesses from industrial disputes related to covid-19 safety precautions. But overall, we are the envy of the world. Sadly, we lost 77 people per million of our population – but that’s a tiny fraction compared that to UK (2,122), Italy (2,210), USA (2,329) or Peru (6,023). Australian real gross domestic product per capita has not just rebounded, but reached its highest level ever. Let’s empathise with those who have lost – in Australia and overseas – but also look forward with hope. We can do great things when we pull together. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

DOORS

It’s been a pleasure to fill in at Industry Update for this issue. Amid a sea of media focusing on political fusses and covid-19 fears, it’s refreshing to work with an outlet devoted to the everyday needs of the firms and workers who are making things in Australia. It’s obviously been a tough time for many of us, but there are important silver linings. A crucial one is changed attitudes among Australians about the critical importance of domestic manufacturing – as the article by St.George attests. Supply chain disruptions could happen at any time, potentially worse in the event of geopolitical unrest. We need to have sufficient domestic capability to carry on and – in the worst case – even to defend the country. As the Buy Australia campaign – also

DOORS

featured – points out, both Australians and people overseas believe Australia has a reputation for quality, and this is improving. So there’s no lack of positive will. It’s time for politicians to recognise the country’s strengths and vulnerabilities. The Opposition has made some promising moves with its proposed Buy Australian Act for domestic procurement by government. The devil will be in the detail of course. Similar commitments at state level have been big in theory but small in practice. But it’s a welcome step. Whoever wins the next election, we need a serious commitment to industry policy.

Have a happy Christmas.

Fritt Fall is not for the faint hearted. Up to 4,000 visitors a day can enjoy the biggest attraction of the Gröna Lund theme park on the island of Djurgarden in Sweden’s capital Stockholm. The passengers are lifted to a height of 80 metres at a rate of three metres per second before falling into the bottomless pit – “fritt fall” means “free fall”. Of course, the illusion of danger is just that: an illusion. The Fritt Fall Power Tower, as it was initially called, has been accident-free for 20 years. In 1997, it was converted from a pure observation tower to the park’s biggest attraction – at the same place where Stockholmers enjoyed themselves as early as the 18th century. Even though the park is only open from April to September, 20 years in the harsh Swedish climate is a long time, and so Gröna Lund Tivoli AB, the operator of the amusement park, decided to overhaul the Fritt Fall. The control system was replaced and so were all the cables. They not only have to withstand high mechanical loads, but also rain, sunlight and rodents. All manufacturers comply with the safety standards in accordance with the applicable machine directive. Fritt Fall has been upgraded to this latest safety standard. Among other things, twochannel sensors are used, which offer redundancy if a sensor should fail.

Fritt Fall. The company was able to supply all the products needed in accordance with a strict timetable in several tranches, because the installation of the cables was to disturb the other renovation work as little as possible.

Cables for power and data

The cables transmit signals from inductive and other sensors to the central control system. This system controls solenoid valves, drives and other components. The cables are all so robust that they can withstand rain and UV light for many years. In addition, the cables are oil-resistant and some also have rodent protection. The cables connect the operator’s control panels in the base of the tower with the engine room at the top. They are located in the elevator shaft inside the tower and were pulled up by ladders. During the overhaul, all control cabinets and consoles were also replaced. “Thanks to the excellent cooperation with LAPP, Fritt Fall will continue to meet the highest safety standards in the future,” says Jesper Frantzén. “And our guests can look forward to a horrible pleasure.”

INDUSTRY POLITICS

A time of opportunity for manufacturing

Hon Angus Taylor MP, Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction It is a privilege to take up my role as Industry Minister during an exciting time in Australian manufacturing. I believe that Australian manufacturing has a significant opportunity to grow a resilient, globally competitive and vibrant onshore capability. I know how vital reliable and affordable energy is to your operations so adding Industry to my ministerial responsibilities of Energy and Emissions Reduction complements the Government’s efforts to support you. The Government is determined to ensure that the energy needs of both businesses and households are met. We will do this while also meeting the nation’s emissions reduction targets, without imposing taxes on consumers as the Prime Minister and I have outlined in Australia’s Long Term Emissions Reduction Plan. As Minister, I look forward to building

on the success of my predecessors by continuing to support our manufacturing exports, manufacturing jobs, and manufacturing businesses to grow. Central to this is our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy, which is a key part of the Morrison Government’s plan to secure Australia’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our industry-led Strategy concentrates on getting the economic conditions right for businesses and focussing on areas of advantage with our six National Manufacturing Priorities. By playing to our strengths, strategically investing and harnessing our world-class science and research, Australian manufacturers can compete on value, quality and product differentiation. While there is still more to do, our plan is already working. ABS Labour Force figures show there are now 80,000 more jobs in manufacturing than there was at

IN S T RUM E N T A T I ON & CALIBRATION PTY LTD S P E C I A L I S T S www.ams-ic.com.au AMS have been suppliers of instrumentation and calibration equipment to all industries since 1973 representing some of the world’s leading manufacturers of the equipment in their field.

the start of the pandemic. For the first time since 2009, there is now a total of 1 million jobs in the sector. Our gas-fired recovery complements our Modern Manufacturing Strategy. Gas is vital to the manufacturing sector, providing 42 per cent of its total energy use in 2019-20, according to the latest Australian Energy Statistics. Gas production also provides critical inputs for plastics, including personal protective equipment, and for manufacturing petrochemicals, using ethane and propane. It plays an important role in providing food through its use in the production of fertiliser for the agricultural industry. Gas is a critical source of flexible, reliable electricity generation. The nation has plentiful reserves of natural gas, but more supply needs to be unlocked or we will face higher prices

and disruptions in supply is being seen currently in Europe. At the same time we are strongly supporting the development of renewable energy. Since 2017 over $35 billion has been invested in the renewable energy sector. Seven gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity was installed in 2020 alone. Alongside other on-demand, dispatchable technologies such as pumped hydro and batteries, gas will help Australia to reach its emissions reductions targets, while keeping the lights on and electricity prices low. As Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction I will continue our strong support of local manufacturers and in particular will work to ensure we can build a stronger economy, create more jobs and take more of our quality products to the world.

Business needs certainty over covid labour rules

Manage Measurement Data Centrally and Wirelessly on a Smartphone, Tablet or PC vaccinations, assuming the legal protection would be forthcoming. A national crisis is a time of deep uncertainty, and if everyone stopped and waited for iron clad legal certainties, the country would have ground to a halt. But now Australian businesses are facing a raft of unfair dismissal claims from workers who refused to get vaccinated, and the assumed protection from government has not been forthcoming. In August, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told businesses that they “may make a reasonable directive to staff” but must “stay consistent” with existing law. He clarified that the “commonwealth and the states are not making any moves” to make special laws for covid-19 vaccination. “That is not changing,” he said. Hopefully the existing law will be enough to protect businesses. Indeed, prominent firms like Qantas and SPC have introduced vaccine mandates. But these decisions were legally informed and do not necessarily generalise to other businesses. Ultimately it will come down to case-by-case decisions by the Fair Work Commission. In September, Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission Lyndall Dean sided with an unvaccinated receptionist in an unfair dismissal case against an aged care facility, likening the termination to “medical apartheid and segregation”. Her position was a minority among the Commissioners on the day, and the age care facility won. Indeed, Commission President Iain Ross made Dean undertake training for her comments, and she will no longer preside over vaccination matters. Nevertheless, this should have been an open and shut case. Age care facilities – who were compelled by public health orders to require staff vaccinations – are surely on the strongest grounds of anyone. This is just not good enough for Australia’s businesses. They need clear cut

NOVEMBER 2021 - JANUARY 2022

protection; they cannot afford to slug out a deluge of unfair dismissal cases. Giants like Qantas and SPC have large legal teams and human resources departments. They have capacity to undertake rigorous legal analysis, and to develop detailed policies that buttress their legal position. They have the legal budget to defend themselves against legal challenges if necessary. But all of this is much harder for small and medium sized businesses. Legal disputes could be the death knell for small businesses already struggling with a covid downturn.

The new U-Wave Bluetooth transmitter utilizes the popular Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy Wireless Technology and allows a simple connection to smartphones, tablets and Bluetooth enabled Laptops and PC’s. • A buzzer type and IP67 type with dustproof and waterproof specifications are available. • Up to 7 units can be connected to 1 Bluetooth enabled PC without a receiver. • New U-WavePak BLE for Android, iOS and Windows available at no cost.

All of this legal complexity comes on top of a historically unprecedented weight of rules and restrictions imposed upon business due to covid, what Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the national employer association Ai Group has described as a “hodgepodge of restrictions and the anomalies and complexities,” which often vary at the state level. On the other hand, Giri Sivaraman, Employment Law Principle of Maurice Blackburn, has told ABC that workers might be able to argue their employer has been negligent should they contract covid-19 on the job. When it comes to covid-19 precautions, it feels like businesses are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. Businesses have risen to a historic challenge. They stand ready to do what is asked of them. But community obligations must be reciprocal. Existing industrial relations law is failing to provide Australia’s businesses – the backbone of our national living standards – with a fair go.

It’s time to provide businesses with unambiguous clarification on what covid-19 precautions are permissible and required – and then guarantee unambiguous protection.

INDUSTRY POLITICS

Manufacturing will power recovery. But we’re missing an obvious element.

Hon Ed Husic MP, Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation Australia has always been the home of manufacturing. Fifty years ago, Australia manufactured everything from washing machines and fridges to cars and steel. Fast-forward to today, Australia ranks last in manufacturing selfsufficiency among all OECD countries. Australians consume $565 billion worth of manufactures each year, but we only produce $380 billion, according to research by Jim Stanford at the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work. In recent years Australia has become more dependent on international manufacturers, undermining our ability to be a self-sufficient country. The COVID-19 pandemic showed us just how important that is. We can’t

pin our hopes on global supply chains. Australians want us to be a nation that makes things. To do that, we need to build on our strengths. We’re a country that’s abundant in natural resources, which I believe the government should do more to capitalise on. Australia is the second largest producer of aluminium in the world. We’re one of the handful of countries globally that has bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and aluminium extrusion industries. Exports from our aluminium industry add around $13 billion to the economy each year. From Gove in the Northern Territory to Smithfield in NSW, aluminium manufacturers across

the country have made 15,000 direct jobs and create jobs for another 60,000 families. Labor believes that this sector should have had a significant place in the government’s 2019 critical minerals strategy.

According to the World Bank: “aluminium is used across a broad range of technologies, making it less susceptible to changes in technology deployment, and it has the highest absolute levels of demand from any of the minerals in this analysis”.

Of course, we need to invest in innovation. But that needs to be balanced with support for those areas in which we’re already leading.

We have resources that will be in massive demand in the future. We have the natural resources that go into the products that will drive the future.

Australia is currently out of step with the rest of the world and behind the eight ball on the path to a decarbonised future. The World Bank’s Minerals for Climate Action report recognises aluminium as the second most widely used material for decarbonisation.

Ed Husic is the Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation and Federal Member for Chifley.

Now, we need the government commitment to match. A Labor Government would deliver on that commitment.

Digital Manufacturing Delivers Actionable Decision Making By Glenn Graney The opportunities around digital manufacturing are as varied and broad as the interpretation of the phrase itself. All too often digital manufacturing is tied to the advent of the newest and brightest technology and the associated hype. The application of robots, automation additive manufacturing, machine learning, and other technology all show great promise. However, the projects associated with those technologies can require major capital investment, acquisition of new knowledge and can be disruptive to current operations. The benefits of Digital Manufacturing do not have to be limited to big-bang, big-budget revolutionary efforts. There are real digital manufacturing transformation opportunities in the way we manage the factory floor that do and huge capital investment. The near-term operational goal on the manufacturing floor is simple. Manufacture the right stuff at the right time as optimally as possible. Every day and every shift there are hundreds of decisions made in terms of achieving that goal. The simplest of all examples is the decision on what to manufacture next. It can’t get any more basic than that. Whether it is for an individual machine, an assembly cell, or a full-blown production line there is always the requirement to decide about what is up next. Several data

points might contribute to that decision. Let's just simplify it into 3 important sets of information: material availability, equipment/labor status, and the up to date of order priority in context with all the possibilities. This is the information that is critical in making the best possible decisions. Unfortunately, our legacy systems and approaches often fall short of optimal decisions support. Material status is hidden in a disconnected warehouse system that doesn’t readily share live inventory levels. Equipment and active order status wait for paper recording and possible postshift data entry. These systems provide no interim progress values or potential availability issues. Customer order data and last-minute priorities are locked in spreadsheets that are only updated for Monday morning production meetings. What is the impact of making suboptimal decisions? Wasted resources are expended readying equipment and labor for jobs without the raw material or components necessary to execute. Excessive work-in-process inventory levels accumulate while waiting on resources that are tied up on previous orders. There are daily issues with over or underproduction of orders that are misaligned with the real customer need. The list of negative issues that can result from ineffective decision-making can go on and on. All of these issues are particularly acute and exaggerated with the current supply chain

and labor availability challenges. The idea that better decisionmaking would benefit the manufacturing enterprise is not new. Every day plant managers are bemoaning the lack of clear and immediate priorities in terms of customer orders. Every day there are floor supervisors expediting material that they had thought was available. There are real cases of digital manufacturing efforts happening across manufacturing that are designed specifically to address improved decisionmaking on the factory floor. QAD has a discrete manufacturing customer in Northern Italy that recently implemented QAD Production Execution. Production Execution is a set of operational extensions of ERP and material management that provides for live collaboration and actionable insights into all of this decision data. Material availability is live. Progress against orders and equipment status is live. Order priorities are updated at the pace of customer changes. The result is operational and planning systems that are extensions of each other and there is no gap in time or accuracy of the information. Too often the expression “single version of the truth” feels more like an aspirational possibility and not a system capability. In this case, the systems deliver exactly that. It is a single, actionable version of the truth. It is important to remember that the goal isn’t this single version of the truth. The goal is better

decision-making! There are a couple of major takeaways that can be shared from recent conversations with the personnel at this manufacturing enterprise. A quote from the shop floor supervisor is pure manufacturing magic, “This is the first time in 20 years that I believe and trust the information in front of me and it has changed the way we make decisions.” Decisions don’t have to be based on hedges or gut feel. There is confidence in the data. Decisions do not have to be delayed to crosscheck data validity. Reduced WIP, near-elimination of lastminute expediting, and other significant improvements can all be related to the flow of improved decision-making. The second takeaway is that the entire Production Execution project from start-up to go-live took place in Northern Italy during the height of the pandemic and its associated challenges. The investment in system upgrades was modest. The disruption to established manufacturing processes was minor. Not

Keeping wheels rolling A2B Trailers strategy amidst the global container crisis.

Freight shipping has seen an unprecedented situation for well over a year.

The worldwide spread of the pandemic continues to be causing critical disruptions in the supply chain globally. Since the beginning of the outbreak, several lockdowns in Asia, India, USA and Europe slowed down the production in factories, resulting in containers piled up at ports and a reduced number of vessels, leaving the rest overloaded. The situation triggered a race of booking available cargo and the carriers started to announce blank sailing (a vessel either skips ports or an entire string is cancelled). Shipping times across continents suddenly doubled, as well as the turnaround at ports globally. In consequence, freight rates began to rise in the latter part of 2020 and have not stopped ever since. The mid 2021 has seen an even greater increase year on year. (Read more according to the Shanghai Freight Index here.) Furthermore, with the 21st century’s Suez Crisis, the infamous case of the Ever Given. At home, industrial action, Covid 19 closures and upcoming port strikes, will not see an end to disruption.

e are here to keep you W moving As A2B Trailers, we have the

advantage of supplying straight from the manufacturer which means we are in full control of orders and supply. Our Variant and Scanvogn European footprint is strong; with part suppliers (Knott & Al-Ko) across Europe, being varied and prepared for to be in a prominent position to be able to serve our clients. What’s more, being a part widespread dealership and warehouse network across Europe, allows us to plan and utilise capacity between our partner locations. However, as part of our supply chain relies heavily importing our goods from Europe, the container crisis has unfortunately without doubt affected our daily operations. We deliver - From day one, A2B Trailers strategy has been clear: prioritising the customers’ needs and getting the product from A to B. Our operations team took the first opportunity to book capacity with our suppliers at the very beginning and kept close contact with freight forwarders. Our customer care and sales managers across Europe have prioritised constant and transparent communication with clients. Our operations teams are tirelessly looking into alternatives, whether it is new products, transportation or adaptation. As part of this strategy, we have had to scale back our small trailer supply and focus on the large GTM range. With the largest range of 3500kg Certified Mechanical Overrun braked trailers in Australia, we

An unpredictable outlook

The situation, as we see it, is as unpredictable as ever & does not appear to be going to improve in the foreseeable future. Container prices have been surging and shipping rates are at record highs at the moment. If we look at container availability, capacity is limited while there is currently a historically high demand for shipping space. Ports in Europe and the rest of the world are massively congested and lead times are sky-high. It is, of course, not only our business that’s affected. Machinery, parts supply, construction equipment in general is facing serious problems globally and we all are in the same boat, from business owners to consumers. Even retail, It’s already all

over the news that we are going to see the biggest impact of shortages on Black Friday and Christmas this year. Demand will become stronger and choice will become weaker. No matter what kind of goods or industry we are talking about, the situation is without a question critical and the pressure is high.

With opportunity on the horizon, planning has never been more important By St.George Bank The global pandemic has triggered the age of transformation for Australia’s manufacturing industry. While economic conditions have never been tougher, the pressure of disrupted supply chains coupled with new market demands has created unprecedented opportunities. The manufacturing industry employs some 860,000 Australians. Prior to the pandemic, it generated more than $100 billion in value for the economy each year and more than $50 billion in exports. Matthew Kelly, Head of Manufacturing and Wholesale NSW at St.George Bank, notes Australian manufacturers have shown resilience and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenge. And many are now reaping the benefits. “I think Australian manufacturers have been underestimated for too long,” says Kelly. “The manufacturing sector is so critical for this country, and it’s now getting the attention it deserves.”

When thinking about future successors, it pays to keep an open mind. All businesses can benefit from diversity of experience in leadership roles. Do you have the right mix in place to promote future success? Manufacturing is still a male-dominated industry with women comprising just under 30 per cent of the workforce, but with the highest value-add roles existing outside production, this looks set to change. “Think about all the steps in the manufacturing value chain – research and development, design, logistics, production, distribution, sales and service,” says Jens Goennemann, Managing Director, Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC). “Are these jobs blokey? Quite the opposite.” Objective guidance will help. The Western Sydney Manufacturing LAB, a collaborative initiative between St.George, Coleman Greig Lawyers, William Buck and AMGC, was developed as a forum for individuals and businesses to network and access services that could lead to strategic partnerships. It’s also an opportunity for manufacturers to undergo a business health check. Need to improve your cashflow? Speak to your bank about accessing capital tied up in machinery or equipment. If you need to conduct repairs or upgrade equipment to make your business more appealing to buyers, loans such as St.George equipment finance can provide flexible repayment terms. “We’re always interested in speaking to clients about their succession plans, because they are generally the ones with a solid strategy in place and a strong focus on driving profits,” says Kelly. The Food Manufacturing Industry Hits Our Screens The Australian Food and Grocery Manufacturers have launched Sustaining Australia TV, an online, longform news series, that showcases this vitally important industry. This series, produced by the AFGC in partnership with ASN Media, showcases the depth, diversity and ingenuity of food and grocery manufacturing in this country, according to a feature report by foodmag. com.au “It captures the strong heritage of this $127 billion industry and the vision for its future,” the report says. “In Lithgow, NSW, for example, the Ferrero factory that produces TicTacs and Nutella has been a mainstay of the local community since 1976. Ferrero has also planted almost a million hazelnut trees in the NSW Riverina in a pilot project to expand the Australian hazelnut industry and develop a counter-seasonal hazelnut crop in the Southern Hemisphere for the future. “In Albury-Wodonga, Asahi Beverages, in a joint venture with Cleanaway Waste

Management and Pact Group, is building a recycling facility that will process the equivalent of around one billion PET plastic bottles each year – important new infrastructure that is building our domestic circular economy capabilities. “And in north-east Victoria and southern NSW, manufacturers Mars, Kellogg and Manildra Group are working with industry, scientists and grain growers on the Cool Soil Initiative, a project that is researching how crop management can increase soil carbon, reduce on-farm greenhouse gas emissions and create a more sustainable future. “Sustaining Australia TV highlights the importance of the industry in regional areas, exploring the key roles participants have in many regional communities. It also gives an insight into the role food and grocery manufacturers play in the lives of all Australians, whether they are in regional towns or in major metropolitan centres. “The series comes at a time when the importance of the food and grocery

manufacturing industry has been demonstrated by its agile responses to the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Food and grocery manufacturing is the largest manufacturing sector in Australia, accounting for 32 per cent of total manufacturing output, while employing

almost 276,000 people. “With the right policy and regulatory settings to encourage new investment, build skills and support innovation, our report shows how this industry can realise a highgrowth future with employment of 427,000 people, high innovation and sustainability and growing exports.”

Lactalis Australia Increases AGV Fleet Building on its initial deployment of four Dematic Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Lactalis Australia has invested in an additional AGV for its fleet, in a bid to boost warehouse-wide efficiency at its Lidcombe Milk Site in NSW. “Dedicated to investing in and growing the Australian dairy industry, as well promoting Australia as a high-quality producer for the Asia Pacific region, this transition into site-wide automated operations with AGVs has helped Lactalis to significantly streamline our operations,” said Kristian Brennan, National Logistics Optimisation Manager at Lactalis. The fleet of AGVs work to retrieve pallets from an inbound conveyer system from production, and then feed the pallets into an order buffer, releasing the pallets at a declined angle onto pallet live storage racking. AGVs are capable of operating 24/7 in both small and large spaces and managing tight traffic at speeds of up to 1.7 metres per second.

The AGVs manage the transportation of pallets of milk at the Lidcombe site and are capable of lifting loads of up to 1.2 tonnes to a height of six metres. Additionally, the AGVs are well suited to working at the site’s chilled environment, which has a temperature of just 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. AGVs are an innovative automated solution that use sensors and laser scanners to navigate with precision for safety around workers and any obstacle. They are powered by Lithium-Ion batteries and can drive themselves onto charging floor plates at times of inactivity to be fully charged in just 2 hours. “Lactalis is a fast-growing company in Australia, and now with a complete fleet of AGVs, they are able to automate several areas of the warehouse, which allows them to optimise picking and dispatch operations across the board,” said Tony Raggio, General Manager AGVs at Dematic.”

Dematic is an intralogistics innovator that designs, builds and supports intelligent, automated solutions for manufacturing, warehouse and distribution environments. With engineering centres, manufacturing facilities and service centres located in more than 25 countries, Dematic’s global network of 10,000 employees have helped achieve more than 6,000 worldwide customer installations for some of the world’s leading brands. Lactalis has 2,500 employees, working

AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING WEEK 2022

AMW 2022 – Where technology meets innovation Preparations are well underway for the inaugural Australian Manufacturing Week exhibition, taking place in Sydney in June 2022. Owned and operated by AMTIL, AMW is Australia’s premier manufacturing solutions event. Under the theme ‘Where technology meets innovation’, AMW 2022 will take place at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) in Darling Harbour from 7-10 June 2022. “We’re getting very excited about the way the work on AMW has been going,” says Kim Banks, Head of Events at AMTIL. “The response from industry has been incredibly positive, with the exhibition space already fully booked apart from a handful of stands. This is a really big, important new venture for AMTIL, so we’re really thrilled with the enthusiasm for it that we’ve seen out there.” AMW will occupy more than 9,000 square metres of exhibition space at the ICC Sydney, with more than 140 organisations taking stands to showcase the latest manufacturing technologies, processes and support services. Six dedicated zones will cover a range of specialised aspects of the modern manufacturing landscape: •

Additive Manufacturing.

Australian Manufacturers Pavillion.

Machine Tools & Ancillary Equipment.

While AMW is a brand new event, AMTIL can bring plenty of experience in staging industry exhibitions to ensure the 2022 show will be a success. Since 2000, AMTIL has operated Austech, Australia’s premier advanced manufacturing and machine tool

exhibition. The last Austech exhibition – held in Melbourne in May 2019 – was attended by industry professionals from across Australia and around the world, with more than 170 organisations showcasing state-of-the-art manufacturing hardware, software and support services. Going forward, Austech has now been incorporated into AMW, an exhibition encompassing all aspects of the manufacturing industry in Australia. AMTIL took the decision to launch AMW after

AMT Magazine; and an array of other services for its members. AMTIL 03 9800 3666 http://www.amtil.com.au

The discontinuation of NMW was seen as an opportunity for AMTIL to develop a more extensive event that demonstrates the full breadth and diversity of the manufacturing industry in Australia today. With AMW, AMTIL is widening the scope of its exhibitions portfolio with a comprehensive showcase of the state of manufacturing in Australia today. “Our ambition for AMW has always been to not just create a fantastic platform for the industry, but for it to become a real celebration of manufacturing in this country,” said Shane Infanti, Chief Executive Officer of AMTIL. “It’s been great to see so many companies coming onboard by signing up to be part of our inaugural show in Sydney next June. I think it’s going to be an unmissable event for anyone connected to Australian manufacturing.” Visitor registrations for AMW 2022 will open in late February. AMTIL will be making regular announcements between now and the start of the event about its plans for the show, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the AMW website as well as its social media channels for the latest updates. “It’s good to be heading into the Christmas break knowing that we’ve got a packed show lined up,” adds Banks. “It means that when we come back in the New Year we can just really focus on getting as many visitors in as possible. I think everyone at AMTIL is very excited about delivering something really great for our industry.”

MACHINERY YIZUMI bucks global trend, exceeding sales expectations YIZUMI has bucked the downward global trend faced by the plastics industry, by recording a 40% increase in sales of injection moulding machines, exceeding CNY 2 billion. A commitment to developing close relationships with its customer base, proactive investment in products, markets and lean manufacturing – coupled with the rapid recovery of China’s domestic and export markets – contributed significantly to YIZUMI’s growth. Tao Zhang, YIZUMI Deputy Managing Director & General Manager of Injection Moulding Machine Division, believes that demand for 3C, medical, packaging, small appliances, 5G, building materials and other plastic-dependent items is particularly strong, thus leading to a sales surge in YIZUMI machines. According to Mr Tao, this success is facilitated by YIZUMI’s proactive implementation of lean production. “The assembly line for small and medium-tonnage models was successfully put into operation in early 2020 after the introduction of the lean manufacturing model,” Mr Tao explained. “It has greatly enhanced the company’s production efficiency and delivery capacity with an increase of 60% in production capacity year-on-year.” Despite the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the world, YIZUMI has exceeded performance in both the Chinese and international markets. “Our uninterrupted service is still maintained even during the pandemic. Combined with the remote technical support and training provided by the YIZUMI service teams, the company generates a lot of customer confidence in its products,” Mr Tao explained. Mobile Smart Factory revolutionising part production and repair Accessing parts is no longer a problem for industries in remote locations with the new Mobile Smart Factory. Made by Bionic Productions in Germany, the mobile unit can be transported by road, rail or ship, with the Mobile Smart Factory providing all the capabilities needed to 3D print parts on demand or in need of repair. The Mobile Smart Factory has been designed to provide convenience for part production or repair whenever and wherever located, encouraging innovation while reducing supply costs and loss in production downtime. Now, a damaged part can be scanned into the system as a CAD diagram and set to print in either metal or polymer right on site, completed within hours ready for replacement. The application can be utilised across many industries, such as remote mining, gas and oil operations – including offshore oil platforms – as well as wind farms that are located on land or in the sea. The Mobile Smart Factory makes production easy as it combines all three areas of the process: design or scan, 3D build and post-production with CNC machining capability. For those worn or damaged parts in high-use areas such as mining, the Smart Factory makes refurbishment or repair to reinstate

the part to its original condition, a cost effective and efficient process. According to the company, the Mobile Smart Factory offers two forms of 3D printing: printing in metal or printing in polymer. “Metal printing uses safe, wire arc additive manufacturing technology (WAAM), a metal AM laser system, along with a milling and drilling process. “The system can also be set up

to make polymer products using a fused deposition model (FDM). The Smart Factory lets you make a one-off replacement part or to build, trial and modify supplementary sections of an original part, or to start from scratch and develop a completely new part.” All the equipment needed is securely housed in two standard 20ft shipping containers, easily moveable and relocatable anywhere

Based on an initial consultation, the Mobile Smart Factory will be tailormade to meet a customer’s specific requirements, with the team at Raymax Applications providing consultation and support to help identify the solution that is best suited, train the operators and assist in preparing the CAD files ready for use. Magnet Testing in Food Production Plants Factories producing our food are all equipped with magnetic protection to ensure we don’t end up with stray bits of iron we didn’t want in our diet—nuts, bolts, wire, weld spatter and the like. These magnets are usually provided in the form of Grate Magnets through which product flows or Plate Magnets across which product flows—or Liquid Magnetic Traps for removal of iron from liquid lines.

These magnets are required to have a minimum surface Gauss reading of 10,000 Gauss (1 Tesla) to provide a magnetic gradient strong enough to capture passing iron fragments, as well as to secure them on the surface until the magnet is cleaned. A regular audit of magnets is a requirement of regulators to ensure they are always at strength and providing best possible protection. Until recently, food producers have relied on external personnel (usually from

24

magnet suppliers) visiting to conduct audits. However, with the availability of inexpensive, precision Gauss Meters many are now purchasing the MAGSYS HGM09s Gauss/Tesla Meter from Serpent & Dove—Applied Magnetics, making the high cost of testing a thing of the past. This easy-to-use, handheld instrument provides complete functionality with only 4 push buttons: the meter can be fully integrated with computer systems if required or used as stand-alone. Peak hold feature locks on to highest reading and many other features make this choice perfect for food plant operators.

Shock-Resistant Linear Position Sensors with IO-Link Turck's robust Li-Q25L has a shock resistance of 200 g and now combines the benefits of contactless inductive measuring with IO-Link Turck has further developed its Li-Q25 inductive positioning systems and equipped the contactless linear position sensors with IO-Link. COM3 of the new Li-Q25L allows it to support the latest and fastest IO-Link interface. The inductive measuring principle outperforms alternative systems, particularly in terms of shock resistance and sampling rates. Thanks to the contactless coupling between positioning element and linear position sensor, the device outputs a reliable position signal even with vibrations or shocks of up to 200 g. The sampling rate of 5 kHz reduces position error to a minimum and

it is constant over the entire measuring length. A 16-bit converter also guarantees highly accurate measuring results. With measurements of up to 2,000 mm, the devices outperform magnetostrictive linear position sensors, for which the sampling rates become slower as the measuring length increases. The Li-Q25L can be integrated in Profinet systems via Turck's Simple IO-Link Device Integration (SIDI) software without the need for any additional software. The IODD Configurator simplifies commissioning and maintenance. Besides cyclical data, the linear position sensor can also transfer diagnostic data to the cloud via IO-Link. This seamless communication ensures data transparency for Industry 4.0 applications, such as condition monitoring

or predictive maintenance, in order to optimize machine availability and lower maintenance costs. The robust sensor complies with protection type IP67 and can be used in temperatures from -25 to +75 °C. Turck is offering the device in measuring lengths of 100 to 2,000 mm. The LiQ25L is insensitive to magnetic fields

and is ideally suited for use in demanding applications with a severe shock load such as in the metal and woodworking industries.

The Next Generation of Machine Control Since the 1960s, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) have been the device of choice for automating and controlling machine operation, making them the head of automated processes. In recent years, engineers have started asking why they need to invest in a PLC. The devices can be expensive, require dedicated software and often mean additional panel and wiring expenses. Is a PLC and its cost really the best option for an application that may only need to control dozens rather than hundreds of I/O points? With the advent of the field logic controller (FLC), the answer is increasingly no. An FLC is a new category of control that brings logic programming to the device level. It is to PLCs what cell phones were to landlines – a transformation in flexibility, control and potential. FLC empowers engineers, OEMs and system designers to add simple logic to applications via Ethernet I/O blocks with built-in FLC technology. It can be used in conjunction with PLCs or as a stand-alone solution that removes PLCs from the equation entirely. One of the primary FLC advantages is saving on the expense of upgrading, buying or replacing a PLC to gain I/O points and connections. It also brings control outside the panel and into challenging field environments because the blocks carry advanced IP ratings for ingress protection. Additionally, FLC technology makes programming accessible to engineers of all experience levels because of its straightforward and streamlined interface and design. By reducing the amount of software and hardware required in manufacturing, FLCs enable more flexible and costeffective programming. It is technology that unlocks the potential of I/O blocks for a revolution in logic and control that doesn’t require dedicated software to purchase or license.

powerful and less expensive, which allowed advanced functionality without increasing end-user cost. These advancements mean I/O blocks can manage both standard I/O functions and the control responsibilities that were formerly only capable through PLCs, and for a fraction of the cost. To make this control possible, today’s FLC technology uses a flow chart system to custom program local Ethernet I/O

How it works The cost of PLCs and the complex, dedicated software required have been an ongoing concern for engineers. User demand was building for simple logic with a clean, web browser-based interface that anyone could program. It was time to build an industrial automation programming environment that was as easy to use as consumer devices. At the same time, microprocessors grew more

blocks via an HTML5-compatible web browser. Through a series of drop-down menus, engineers can set up multiple conditions, operations and actions on one block. • Conditions correspond to input conditions. Examples of conditions include a timer expiring, a counter expiring or reaching a value, or an input from a sensor becoming true.

• Operations include Boolean operations, such as “and,” “or” and “not.” • Actions correspond to output conditions and tell the block the desired action to execute. When a condition is true, actions run. Where before this functionality was only possible through PLCs, FLCs can easily manage these communications

on their own. They also allow users to write, run, simulate and debug code. Signaling a pump to turn on or off based on liquid level is an example of how this programming might work. The I/O block is connected to a level sensor. The sensor monitors the liquid level in a tank and reports back to the block. The ideal level is 50 units, to prevent overfill or the pump running dry. For this application, FLC technology can

be used in place of a PLC to program the block to signal one of three actions: • When the value is above 50 units, the condition is true. A pump will turn on to return liquid to its ideal level. • When the value is below 50 units, the condition is true. More liquid will flow into the tank or a pump will be turned off until it reaches the ideal level. • When the value is 50 units, the condition is false. No action will be taken because the liquid is at its ideal level. Engineers can choose to access different capabilities of FLC technology based on the application. These capabilities include toggle buttons to signal on/off, arithmetic functions, timers and counters, monitoring via HMI, and defining variables to communicate with PLCs. When first activating the block’s technology, the programmer enters the unique IP address to access the block and programming environment. All programming is managed through an HTML5-compatible web browser and uploaded via an Ethernet connection to the block. This design allows users to program FLCs via any handheld device, such as a tablet or smartphone, which are more readily accessible in the field than PCs.

TURCK red based on accurate assembly of parts. One company also programmed lights to help with assembly efficiency. An assembler pushes a button when a part bin is empty, alerting floor supervisors to refill the bins. This on/off functionality can be programmed through FLC as a stand-alone function but could easily be used to integrate with PLC-controlled applications. • Liquid level measurement: A milk processor used a stand-alone FLC to solve the issue of how much milk was in a tank. If a sensor measures milk above a fill line, a motor is turned on and liquid pumped back to a reserve tank. If below the fill line, the pump stops to allow the tank to refill.

Three control configurations Because FLC technology offers control at the device level, it delivers a more cost-effective programming. FLCs can also go into harsh environments or outside the panel where ratings above IP20 are required. There are three primary use cases and configurations for FLC technology: • Standalone logic controller: This was the inspiration for the FLC and is its primary use. After accessing the programming environment, engineers can use the flow chart interface to program and upload logic directly to the multiprotocol Ethernet I/O block. The block will carry out the actions and report back. No PLC is required. • Local backup for a PLC: For more complex systems, FLC can be used as a local backup for a PLC. If the PLC loses power or connection, FLC technology can do one of two things: either take over the application and run it from the block or take over the application and safely shut down the process. This can help avoid downtime and troubleshoot where a problem exists on the line. • Partner for PLC processing: FLC can also be used in tandem with the PLC, as distributed control in larger automation environments. The FLC-capable I/O block can locally monitor and control an application and compile data and send that data via defined variables to the PLC to lighten its data input

NOVEMBER 2021 - JANUARY 2022

and output load. This is helpful in high-speed applications, such as conveyor belts, where sending data in real time (network latency) can be problematic. With these cases, the user can set variables to know when information is stored. If applicable, variables can indicate when a PLC is connected and data is communicated to and from a PLC. FLC is not currently suited for high-speed motion applications, as the minimum scan cycle is longer than the required safety/shutdown response times. Another is the ability for an FLC to control or monitor I/O from other I/O devices on the Ethernet network.

The FLC will have wide-ranging implications for control in automated applications, especially as the cost of PLCs and similar technology increases. It is especially effective in simple sensing applications where there needs to be better communication integration into larger PLC-controlled applications. Some early adopters have already realized the benefits of FLC technology in stand-alone uses, by bringing communication and control to the device level. • Pick-to-light assembly: This application is prevalent at small assembly stations. As visual cues for assembly, lights turn green or

• Metal finishing: One company wanted a better way to manage communication for finishing metal parts and chose FLC technology to update its processes. It connected a sensor that reads the level of roughness on the surface of a part to an Ethernet I/O block programmed with FLC technology. Based on the sensor’s reading, the part is automatically sent to the appropriate station for honing and polishing.

implify systems and S expand i/o capabilities In addition to simple logic applications, FLC technology can be used to elevate and improve IO-Link control. IO-link is a point-to-point serial communication protocol used to communicate with sensors and actuators. It enables companies to add I/O points to lower-cost PLCs without the need to invest in or upgrade to a more expensive PLC. The FLC takes this one step further by allowing engineers to create high-density I/O without a PLC. Take as an example a conveyor belt that requires 128 sensors. Rather than control the system from a PLC, IO-Link-capable I/O blocks with FLC technology can be used to control these 128 sensors. Engineers can control, view and adjust parameters from the FLC interface with a few changes to programming code. Turck 1300 132 566 www.turck.com.au

Collaborative Robots: Friend or Foe? From working like “robots” to mastering robots. Australia/ New Zealand – Misconceptions continue to linger as workers still view advanced automation as a threat to their employment. However, James McKew Regional Director for AsiaPacific at Universal Robots believes that this couldn’t be further from the truth. “The proof lies in the name,” he says. Collaborative robots, fondly known as cobots, work safely alongside humans and as the name suggests, it is all about collaboration. “Cobots are not a threat to human labour, they help to enhance the quality of production and the ability for humans and robots to collaborate” he adds.

skills can become cobot programmers” he explained.

Business “As Usual”

Now, in a time of ongoing lockdowns, border closures and heightened concerns around health and safety, cobots allow for “business as usual” – even in the most unprecedented times. Adding to this is the reliance on a global supply chain by local manufacturers who are changing their production over

workers to start mastering robotics and training cobots to do the dull and monotonous jobs that talented and dexterous humans should not be doing. With an aging population in the manufacturing sector and fewer young people wanting to do manual factory tasks, cobots are shifting are helping to transform this space into a more attractive working environment for the younger workforce. “They now have the ability to program and manage cobots which makes James McKew - Universal Robots’ Regional Director for the Asia Pacific

He explains that many machines can be tended by several cobots while a person is left in charge of managing all of these.

An (Ir)rational Fear

According to McKew, the fear of robots taking over is natural. However, he says that Universal Robots was founded on “‘Empowering People’ and shifting from ‘people working like robots’ to ‘people working with robots”.

“They program them, optimise them, and determine if there are more creative ways that the cobots can be used to enhance production output”. According to McKew, Universal Robots is on a journey to “shift humans who are working like robots to humans mastering robots themselves.”

When some think of robots, they cast their minds back to those seen in the movies. However, in the manufacturing environment “their purpose is to guide people who are capable of managing production processes and get them to manage robots that do the dull, dusty, monotonous and non-creative aspects of production processes.” He adds that cobots should not be confused with industrial robots. “Cobots are designed to be human-friendly, they have systems on-board that can detect humans and they do not need to be caged”. “Cobots will not hurt humans whereas industrial robots may. They are easy to use, easy to program and lightweight. In fact, even operators with limited programming

The opportunities are immense for countries to resume production. The pandemic has taught countries that strategically sourcing away all production is not actually very strategic.

to bring manufacturing home and ensure business continuity. “Cobots act as a lifeline for local businesses that need to accelerate local manufacturing. Cobots ensure enhanced productivity, reduced errors and improved efficiencies.” In addition, cobots allow production

manufacturing a desirable career choice for the future.”

What the Future Holds

McKew sees robot cell operators enhancing processes and adding value to human-machine operators.

“Cobots along with talented manufacturing workers provide companies with massive opportunities for efficient reshoring in the post-pandemic world.” he concludes.

AUSTRALIAN MADE Enmin expansion continues with launch of new electrical division Following Enmin’s recent relocation to a larger factory, the company has expanded its range of services with a dedicated electrical services division to encompass all forms of electrical installation and maintenance. Enmin already designs and provides electrical control and automation services for the food and allied industries, ensuring that it seamlessly integrates with new or existing materials handling lines and vibratory equipment. The actual design and build of control boxes and other electric interfaces were previously outsourced. However, Enmin will now be doing all that work in-house as well as being able to provide a far broader range of services. With PLC Control, AutoCAD electrical design, machine and process wiring, commissioning and maintenance, Enmin can now offer the complete package. “We can now accommodate all electrical needs for a customer’s production line and associated plant and equipment, from design and build through to implementation. We can see first-hand a customer’s existing set-up and recommend any necessary updates or refinements to ensure they are to date with the latest production efficiencies,” said Enmin’s General Manager Anthony Gallaher.

“Our philosophy for the provision of electrical services is the same for all the equipment we sell and service. We carefully review a customer’s requirements and then tailor a solution to best match their specification and budget. Systems are designed with future requirements in mind to provide maximum flexibility and allow for expansion,” Mr Gallaher went on to say. “An example of our where our expertise can be bought to bear is when we’re installing some new materials handling equipment and the customer wants to replace old wiring or upgrade other electrical components; we can now look after all that kind of work. We’re a one-stop shop that can offer a complete 360-degree service for all electrical work,” Mr Gallaher added. These expanded services are not just restricted to Australian-made equipment. “There are many pieces of nonbranded equipment brought in from overseas and people are often at a loss when it comes to ensuring the electrical components work as intended and integrate with existing equipment. Our extensive experience with all makes and types of materials handling and packaging equipment will enable us to provide a solution to any kind of electrical challenge,” Mr Gallaher went on to say.

The company will also be undertaking electrical maintenance for customers including responding to urgent breakdowns and solving and repairing electrical faults. “Expanding into offering a full range of electrical services was a natural progression for us. Customers can now look to us for all of their electrical needs and enjoy the benefits of using a single service provider and the associated cost efficiencies and convenience that provides,” Mr Gallaher summed up. For more than 40 years, Victoria-

based Enmin has been building custom vibratory and material handling solutions for a myriad of applications and environments. The company’s vast knowledge and expertise in this area has seen their list of customers grow to include most of Australia’s leading food industry manufacturers.

Australian-made gardening and housewares innovation wins Good Design Award for Design Excellence

An Australian pot plant glider has been recognised with a prestigious 2021 Australian Good Design Award for Design Excellence in the category of ‘Product Design for Housewares and Objects for Design and Innovation’. The Omni GliderTM was recognised for its design aesthetic and practical innovation, giving large immovable pot plants in the home and garden, the power of intuitive mobility. Made in NSW by OMNIA Wheel, the Omni GliderTM supersedes traditional castor wheel trolleys and caddys used underneath plant pots. The secret to the superior mobility of the Omni GliderTM is the patented omni-wheels – wheels within wheels – that allow potted plants to seamlessly glide in any direction across pavers, decking and floorboards without getting stuck, tipping over or rolling away. Managing director, Peter McKinnon, said the omni-wheels now allow people to easily move heavy potted pots with confidence. “Not only does your potted plant glide to exactly where you want it to go, it requires very little effort or strength, making it a safer and more stable solution,” Mr McKinnon said. “Sales in Australia and the United States have been strong with high rates of repeat purchasing and consistent 5-star reviews from customers on the Omni Glider’s superior ease of use and aesthetics,” he said. “Customers love the understated,

sleek design and hidden wheels, which enhances the overall appearance of the plant pots, unlike traditional castor wheel trolleys,” he said. The Omni GliderTM was codeveloped with Sydney-based industrial design company Design + Industry (D+I) to achieve the appealing design, described by the Good Design Awards judges as ‘covetable’. According to the Good Design Awards Jury, the Omni GliderTM is a great practical object for moving plants. “The concealed wheels and finesse of the product make it absolutely covetable for the market, giving users flexibility and the capacity to clean and sweep around their plants with ease. The clean aesthetic doesn't try to make a feature of itself; rather, be there to assist the user in a practical and useful way,” the jury added. Omni Gliders are currently available in two load-bearing capacities – 50kg and 90kg – and two neutral tones – white and charcoal – to complement most plant pots. A broader range of colours, load-bearing capacities and sizes are expected in 2022. The Good Design Awards is Australia’s oldest and most prestigious international awards for design. The Awards celebrate the best design of new products and services on the Australian and international markets.

Australian Made and the Minogue Sisters a ‘Genuine Aussie’ pairing Australian icons, Kylie Minogue and Dannii Minogue have teamed up with the not-for-profit Australian Made Campaign Ltd (AMCL) to help educate consumers in the UK and USA to spot authentic Australian products. The light-hearted ‘Genuine Aussie’ social media campaign sees the famous Australian sisters assess each other’s Aussie credentials to ultimately be judged a ‘Genuine Aussie’, just like the products that carry the Australian Made logo – the famous green and gold kangaroo. While both have been long-time supporters of Australia across their many endeavours, it’s the first time the sisters have joined forces to support such an initiative. “We love Australia and enjoy championing its positive reputation overseas,” said the pair. “This campaign is a fun way to help consumers in the UK and USA to spot the genuine article when they choose to buy Australian.” The Genuine Aussie social media

campaign is part of a broader initiative to promote and protect the Australian Made logo in export markets. “We are thrilled to have passionate Australians, such as Kylie and Dannii help spread the Australian Made message overseas,” said Australian Made Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro. “The Minogue sisters are genuine Aussie icons who continue to elevate Australia’s reputation overseas.” Developed by agency, day&age, the Genuine Aussie campaign features a recent video chat between the Minogue sisters, with Kylie dialling in from London to Dannii in Melbourne. During the online catch-up, the sisters share in some classic Aussie banter with Dannii questioning whether Kylie has maintained her ‘Australianness’ while away from home— of course Kylie passes with flying colours earning the ‘Genuine Aussie’ stamp of approval. The campaign includes a targeted roll-out across Facebook and Instagram in the UK and USA. Viewers in these markets will have the opportunity to

OMNIA WHEELS

Wheels within a wheel technology brings 360-degree mobility to industry and consumers There are only a handful of global manufacturers of omni-wheels globally. One of those is NSW based OMNIA Wheel. Omni-wheels date back to the 1970s but OMNIA’s managing director, Peter McKinnon, said it is only recently that businesses and product designers have realised the benefits and applications of omni-wheels over conventional swivel castors. Omni-wheels are wheels within a wheel. Mr McKinnon said they provide the simplicity of a fixed wheel with the multi-directional capability of a swivel castor. He said omni-wheels can fit better within a product to improve aesthetics and are simple to mount. They help create products that are more intuitive to use and that respond directly to applied force. “Gone are the days when wheels went one way, and we went another,” said Mr McKinnon. “Unlike swivel castor wheels, omniwheels reliably track in any direction and turn when you turn, while improving load stability,” he added. OMNIA’s wheels are transforming and enhancing products used in the

ergonomic materials handling, robotics, conveyor sortation and Medtech equipment sectors, helping to create new lifestyle products.

180mm omni-wheel launched This month, OMNIA launched a 180mm wheel, which is the firm’s largest, taking its number of available wheel sizes to five. Mr McKinnon said the 180mm wheel will significantly improve ride quality and load capacity. It can also be readily power driven. “The larger wheel means less vibration and noise, making it a winner for sectors such as MedTech equipment and retail equipment. “Other exciting applications with this size wheel include scaling our conveyor sortation systems for pallet loads and other large, heavy items.”

Robotic food delivery Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) at Singapore’s Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital are picking up and moving food trolleys fitted with OMNIA’s wheels. Mr McKinnon said the fixed orientation and alignment of the omniwheels means they don't collide with or obstruct the robot. The wheels allow a smaller wheelbase and provide more load stability, particularly for tall, narrow trolleys. The Blind Chef trials Omnia's Omni-sense white cane tip

“The absence of a swivel offset minimises the trolley width, allowing the

robot to navigate tight spaces and to save space when storing the trolleys.” The robot supplier, US-based logistics automation company Atheon, is also using OMNIA’s wheels on its T4 Tug AMR. Food delivery is not the only robotics application of OMNIA’s wheels. The first take up was in autonomous disinfection robots in China. Australia’s first autonomous sterilising robot, at Royal Hobart Hospital – developed by Omron in partnership with Atherton – also uses OMNIA’s wheels. “Our new 180mm wheel will open the door for even better robotic mobility.”

ulti-directional conveyor M sortation Omni-wheels are making fast and more flexible multi-directional conveyor sortation a cost-effective reality. OMNIA’s wheels are used in both automated and manual conveyor tables. They can be installed into existing systems, are relocatable and can be programmed for secondary processing. Per hour, OMNIA’s system can sort up to 4,880 items weighing up to 30kg, based on a 50% diversion rate. European customer, Cellumation,

right future for Australian B manufacturing One of the silver linings of COVID-19 is the spotlight on the importance of domestic manufacturing. Australian businesses, consumers and governments have all realised the importance of having local supply chains from a viable local manufacturing sector. “It has been a long journey, but we might just be a 15-year overnight success story,” Mr McKinnon said.

uses OMNIA’s 50mm wheel in its conveyor sortation system. It won a global DHL Innovation Award in 2016. “With our omni-wheel conveyor sortation tables you can divert, position, align, rotate, orient and merge packages without lifting, pushing or guiding them. With fewer moving parts, they deliver greater reliability and performance than alternative systems. “Because our patented wheels are injection moulded all-polymer, they are impact resistant and won’t corrode, making them ideal for use in mission critical environments.”

rgonomic materials E handling When a major Australian supermarket chain conducted an 11-month trial of OMNIA’s four-wheel Rotatruck for milk crate handling, injuries fell by 88% and productivity increased by 21%. Mr McKinnon said, Australian retailers and other food and beverage distributors – including Woolworths, Coles, Baby Bunting, BWS, Liquorland, Freedom Furniture, and Norco – are embracing these next generation hand trucks fitted with omni-wheels. OMNIA’s gas cylinder and milk crate hand trucks are used around the world. Mr McKinnon said the awardwinning Rotatruck is easier, faster and safer than conventional two-wheel trucks and trolleys, taking the load off the operator. “The design of the Rotatruck drives

safety, rather than relying on operators to comply with standard operating procedures. With a two-wheel truck, operators often reduce the load in case they hit uneven terrain or an obstacle.” Rotatruck operators can lever rather than lift, ease back rather than pull back, and the truck carries the load, not them. They can step up a kerb, as opposed to having to pull the truck up backwards.

“Users of our hand trucks consistently say they will never go back to a twowheel trolley.”

MedTech equipment applications The Omni-sense white cane tip is the application of which Mr McKinnon is most proud. He said using an omniwheel on the bottom of the cane provides improved mobility for vision impaired people. Ian Edwards, also known as The Blind Chef, helped OMNIA to develop and test the device for which there is great interest in the United States. Mr McKinnon believes the MedTech equipment sector is one of the biggest for omni-wheel applications due to their intuitive and direct response. “Our wheels have applications in improving mobility for people with a disability, rehabilitation, patient handling, assisted living and emergency evacuation.”

Mobicon salutes the military-standard quality and uptime achieved by Hydraulink Container handling machinery specialists, Mobicon Systems, are using high quality hydraulic hoses to drive new equipment designs for increased lifting efficiency and reliability for their customers. Mobicon’s straddle carriers are primarily used to handle shipping containers in low to medium volumes and are used anywhere from large seaports, to wineries, to manufacturers of steel reinforcing, and navy applications. GATES hydraulic hoses, supplied by leading hydraulic hose and fittings organisation, Hydraulink, are providing the quality and uptime demanded from the diverse industries Mobicon serves. “We serve a range of clients, from family-owned transport companies, through to the US Navy, which cannot have a failure at sea during operations. The machines we supply to the US Navy are considered mission critical, and a hose failure during operation could jeopardise a mission. To avoid any failures, the US Navy specifies GATES hoses,” said Adam Lucas, Operations Manager, Mobicon Systems Pty Ltd. “In other industries, where the equipment may not be deemed mission critical, customers can see the value in using high quality hydraulic hoses to maximise uptime and performance. The price tag may be higher upfront, but they make it all back, and then some, by avoiding costly delays when something goes wrong,” Mr Lucas said. “That’s why we’ve been specifying GATES hoses, through Hydraulink, for more than a decade. The product quality, value for money and outstanding service have been first class,” he said. As a leading hydraulic hose, fittings, and service provider – and official supplier of GATES products – Hydraulink operates through more than 400 service points in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, all dedicated to maximising uptime and providing efficient hose replacement services that ensure high quality products and reliable services.

Mobicon’s unique straddle carrier design features the lowest axle loads in the world for any container handler – a feat that would be impossible without high quality, low bending radius hydraulic GATES hoses, supplied by Hydraulink

throughout Mobicon’s straddle carriers “This unique design combines eight load balanced wheels with a telescopic lift, which gives us the ability to lift containers without the means of wire ropes, and ensures we have the lowest axle loads in the world for any container handler,” Mr Lucas said. “However, the design requires hose runs to be consistently routed over moving joints with multiple degrees of

freedom. For example, the hydraulic path for the steering system requires oil to pass over a total of 22 flexible joints from pump to tank, which would be impossible without high quality, low bending radius hydraulic GATES hoses from Hydraulink.”

It means my team has had no problems or issues with Hydraulink that have needed to be escalated to me. That means no late orders, no lost parts, no incorrect invoices and no warranty issues. WORKSPACE SAFETY

Hitting “Refresh” on Work Health and Safety While we’ve all been preoccupied with wearing masks, elbow-bumping and staggering entrances, some of the more fundamental aspects of work health and safety may have become less of a focus. Work health and safety (WHS) – sometimes called occupational health and safety (OH&S) – involves the management of risks to the health and safety of everyone in your workplace. This includes the health and safety of anyone who does work for you as well as your customers, visitors and suppliers. Here are some of the areas to keep an eye on in any industrial, warehouse or manufacturing space. All employers should of course be in compliance with official workplace health and safety rules and regulations. Further detail can be found at www. whsmatters.com.au, www.business.gov.au/ risk-management/health-and-safety/workhealth-and-safety and government websites.

Emergency Plans

An example of emergency planning is establishing where employees should assemble on evacuation in the case of fire. Emergency plans should be comprehensive, yet easy to understand in order to minimise panic, and tailored to the specific workplace.

First aid

Whatever the workplace, there must be provision of first aid supplies that each employee has access to.

I nformation, training and instruction

Information, training and instruction must be provided for staff. It should of course be adequate and appropriate for the nature of the work to be carried out.

Warehouse racking

It is crucial that racks are wellconstructed and maintained according to the manufacturers’ instructions. Weight, placement and units need to be observed and monitored regularly.

During the training of conveyor operators, each operator must understand the safe operation of the conveyor and all safety precautions. Also, during the learning period, a conveyor operator must be supervised by a worker with a thorough knowledge of the machine/vehicle.

Hazardous chemicals

Ensure any hazardous chemicals are correctly labelled. Also ensure that any safety data sheets are readily available and up to date. Ensure any relevant personal protective equipment is supplied and workers are trained in how to wear or use it.

Forklifts

Forklifts are a regular fixture in storage and warehouse facilities, but a significant risk is the potential for vehicles to tip over. Be careful of: •

excessive speed – especially while turning

heavy braking

• overloading •

moving with an elevated mast and load

sloping surfaces

traveling down ramps with load forward

turning sideways on ramps

Ensure any driver holds the appropriate licence. Before a forklift is operated, a pre-start safety check should be done on both the vehicle and its attachments.

Charging stations

Charging stations can be powered by batteries, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or gasoline. They are used in recharging and refuelling powered equipment – so they can cause explosions and fires if safety measures are not in place. Make sure that: •

the area where they are placed has a proper ventilation system, which will help disperse harmful gases

any relevant personal protective equipment is supplied, and workers are trained in how to use it.

Loading areas

One of the risks in loading areas is a worker being hit or crushed by mobile plant (for example: trucks, forklifts etc). This can be caused by forklift rear swing or mobile plant striking someone. Here are some safety measures to reduce risks: •

Separate people and the traffic areas by installing physical barriers and have warning alarms if someone enters the area

Material storage

Haphazard storage can lead to objects falling off shelves, causing trips and slips. •

Always stack product evenly. Arrange the heavier loads on the middle to lower shelves and keep the lighter stock towards the top. Take time when removing product from shelves. Ensure product is secure.

Ensure that passageways and aisles are kept clean and clear to prevent congestion and accidents

Manual handling and lifting

Minimise workplace injury by encouraging employees to adopt the right ergonomic posture when moving or carrying heavy loads. Let them know it is OK to ask for help.

Traffic management

Managing warehouse traffic is imperative. Vehicles reversing, loading and unloading are unfortunately often linked with injuries to workers and members of the public. Within a warehouse, eliminate risk by separating vehicles, and pedestrians should always be given right-of-way.

Conveyors

Conveyors are usually used to transport products or goods between warehouses.

NOVEMBER 2021 - JANUARY 2022

Install speed limiters and proximity sensors

Having work health and safety measures in place can result in many benefits for workers and organisations. These include greater productivity, lower workers’ compensation premiums, less workplace injury and workers’ compensation claims, and greater health and wellbeing for employers and staff alike.

Highly Effective Pump cuts maintenance costs and extends pump life at Luggage Point WWTP Utilita Water Solutions is a joint venture between Broadspectrum and Downer Utilities, delivering maintenance services for Queensland Urban Utilities from July 2016 through to July 2021. Queensland Urban Utilities is one of the largest water distributor-retailers in Australia, supplying drinking water, recycled water and sewerage services to a population of more than 1.4 million across Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset. Utilita carries out a range of work for Queensland Urban Utilities including mechanical and electrical maintenance and repairs, water and sewer mains and fittings maintenance, reservoir maintenance and vegetation management.

hy did Utilita Water W Solutions select a GormanRupp New “Eradicator” System?

As part of their client commitment, Utilita like to implement changes that improve processes, WHS conditions, and reduce downtime. As part of this commitment, Mr David Tolliday, Leading Hand Mechanical with Utilita at the Luggage point WWTP, wanted to address a continued downtime issue with his digester turnover pumps. Although he had world leading Gorman-Rupp Super T Series pumps on the job, the heavy loading of rags was causing blockages to the pumps twice or three times per day, per pump!

David met with Mr Darren Jones of Hydro Innovations, distributors of the Gorman-Rupp pumps in Australia, to find a solution. Darren suggested a trial with Gorman-Rupp’s new “eradicator” solids

management system, which was designed to greatly reduce blockages by stringy materials. This system can be retrofitted to Gorman-Rupp Super T or Ultra V Series sewage pumps, so David was keen to try it. The trial eradicator retrofit kit was duly installed in late March of 2021.

The Results

Mr Jones was keen to find out how the unit was going in the trial and contacted David late in May. David reported that the pump with the eradicator fitted had

not had a single blockage in that 8 week period, and that he would be ordering upgrade kits for the balance of his digester pumps.

he Benefits of the T Installation

Gorman-Rupp designed the “eradicator” to address blockage issues associated with the increased use of wet wipes and their infiltration into the sewage system, ragging issues, and industrial issues such as feathers in poultry processing.

The eradicator works by continuously cleaning the leading edge of impeller vanes, and passing the materials through the pump without impacting performance or interrupting service. The system is available for all Gorman-Rupp’s Super T and Ultra V Series pumps, in sizes from 2” [50mm] through to 10” [250mm]. Hydro Innovations 02 9898 1800 hydroinnovations.com.au

Lubrication failures = preventable bearing failures Few bearings fail due to material fatigue with the bearing having reached the end of its service life. Industry sources vary with respect to the reasons for premature bearing failure however all are in agreement that improper lubrication is the main cause. Conservative industry estimates of the reasons for bearing failures are: • Improper lubrication: 40% - 50% • Improper mounting: 25% - 30% • Other causes:(2) 20% • Natural fatigue limit reached: <10% Proper lubrication prevents metalto-metal contact between the rolling

elements, raceways and retainers; it protects the bearing against corrosion and wear, helps dissipate heat, seals out solid and liquid contamination, and reduces bearing noise. A bearing will not reach its maximum service life without proper lubrication. There are many causes for lubricant or lubrication failure, including: •

Insufficient lubricant quantity

Deterioration due to prolonged service without replenishment

Excessive operating temperatures

Contamination with foreign matter

Water contamination from humidity, condensation or other liquid contamination • Incorrect grease for a particular application • Over-lubricating – which causes rapid temperature increases, churning, and may cause oxidation of the oil and breakdown of the grease GreaseMax® continuous automatic lubricators efficiently and reliably ensure proper bearing and seal lubrication. IO-Link Radar Sensors for Level Measurement Turck's LRS510 sensor family offers extensive analysis functions for challenging level applications in tanks and silos

for processing in condition monitoring applications in IIoT: besides signal strength, this includes temperature values, operating hours or switching cycles.

The IO-Link-capable radar sensors of the LRS Series complete Turck's portfolio for level measurement in the 0.35 to 10 meter range. The devices with protection to IP67/69K are especially recommended for level applications in factory automation, for which optical or ultrasonic sensors are unsuitable due to factors such as dust, wind or light. The freely radiating LRS radar sensors also offer detailed analysis functions which were previously only possible in the high-end radar sensors used in the process industry. The absence of a metal guide probe enables the sensor to be used easily in hygiene applications and simplifies commissioning. The touchpad of the LRS series with capacitive buttons and a translucent front cap is based on the same concept as Turck's Fluid 2.0 sensor platform, and enables the output of distance, level and volume values. The LRS sensors are

Disturbance factors such as dust, wind or light do not present a problem for robust free radiating LRS radar sensors for level measurement up to 10 meters

available either with two switching outputs or with one switching and one analog output. Thanks to their additional IO-Link

interface and intelligent decentralized signal preprocessing, all variants provide a large quantity of additional information

Users of Turck's IO-Link master can call up the Radar Monitor via the IODD configurator without any additional software. The browser-based configuration tool graphically displays the measurement curve of the sensor and offers plain text access to all relevant parameters. This makes it possible for example to mask out the interference signal of an agitator or grid, or to perfectly align with the real-time feedback of the sensor in order to maximize the reliability of level measurement in challenging applications.

Apollo VTS, Your Expert On Vertical Conveying Solutions! By Apollo Group With the needs and dreams of our customers at heart, the Apollo Group from the Netherlands is an example of growth by transformation. We have nearly 175 years of proud family tradition to back this up! Together with our customers we design, manufacture, and install the next generation of conveying solutions. The VTS division in the Apollo Group is the world’s leading supplier of vertical conveying systems. We pursue the key elements of offering high-quality machines, developing the machine in cooperation with our customers, thinking in solutions, providing 24/7 customer service, and maintaining flexibility in design and service. Being a worldwide player, we believe we need to be closer to our customers around the world. For the Asia-Pacific region, we have localized sales offices across the region and a production facility in Thailand to design, manufacture, dispatch, install, and service vertical conveying solutions from within the region. Core to our vertical conveying systems are our renowned Spiral Conveyors. Every Spiral Conveyor is designed according to our proven reliable technology, while offering many features, benefits, and flexibility. This technology makes the Apollo Spiral Conveyors faster and more reliable than any other vertical transport solutions such as elevators or lifts, while saving the most of valuable floor space than incline conveyors within production and logistics facilities.

Spiral

Apollo Spiral Conveyors are suitable for several types of industries including food, beverage, warehousing, e-commerce, industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical, automotive, and more. Spiral types can range from the standard Single Lane to Dual Lane, where two seprately driven tracks run next to each other and have the possibility to run synchronised or with different speeds and/ or in opposite directions, meaning twice as much throughput! The Heavy Duty version can handle double the weight of regular Spiral Conveyors, resulting in a load capacity of 100 kg with only one motor for substantial savings in energy, controls, and system integration. The Wide Trak version can handle a variety of load sizes, big and small, making it ideal for warehousing and order picking operations. It is unique for its ability to transport product widths up to 900 mm with a single conveying belt. The smaller base structure and

50

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

smallest belt width of 150 mm makes the Narrow Trak model a perfect solution to transport small, single package items for the personal care, food, and beverage industries. The Mass Flow Spiral Conveyors are the first choice for vertical transport of bottles, cans, jars and various similar products. The Mass Flow is designed to handle large quantities of items in a gentle way which could easily go up to 120,000 units per hour. In comparison with conventional vertical conveying systems, the Apollo Mass Flow Spiral Conveyor has a very small footprint which saves valuable floorspace in your beverage production facility.

Multi-entry

The Spiral Conveyors can be delivered with extra shoot-in and shoot-out conveyors for a multi-level product entry and exit across several floor levels.

Conveying belt design

The Spiral Conveyor is designed to run 24/7 transferring a constant stream of products. On average a belt component will travel in terms of distance an equivalent of eight times around the world over its lifetime moving wet or abrasive products, which puts high requirements on the durability requirement of the belt design! Our unique bearing design ensures low friction and discloses any shear of

materials. All of this ensures a smooth, stable, and silent continuous flow of products with virtually no wear to the Spiral Conveyor, chain, or belt. Therefore, our conveying technology requires no lubrication to be in contact with the belt, resulting in a clean and contamination-free environment.

Noise

Due to the bearing rolling friction transport system, Spiral Conveyors have an extremely low noise level during operation of 52-72 dBA (depending on the speed and the load). This guarantees a safer and more pleasant working environment for workers where noise can be a concern, such as warehouses and distribution centers.

On-site

To overcome various restrictions and limitations in installation locations, the Spiral Conveyors can be brought on-site in smaller pieces and then re-assembled in short time. This flexibility is perfect for tight spaces!

Service

We believe it isn’t just the quality of our machines that make our customers come back again, but also our after sales service. Though the products are designed to deliver high performance during a lifetime, no machine can operate without maintenance. We therefore offer both onsite assignment and remote online remote support through augmented reality for fast diagnostics and problem solving.

Offering a 100:1 flow ratio, the PF3A8#H-L can detect small leaks (10LPM or more), monitor main line air consumption (up to 2000LPM) and pressure while simultaneously measuring air pressure and temperature. The accuracy of information sits at the heart of the PF3A8#H. The 3-colour and 2-line screen display can rotate in increments of 90° allowing operators to take notes and set the flow switch whilst checking the measured value. Guiomar Fernandez, Product Marketing Manager at SMC Corporation Australia New Zealand believes that the true benefit of this component lies in its ability to offer more detailed information thanks to its IO-link compatibility (together with switchable NPN/PNP output). “We are able to offer more Extensive and permanent condition monitoring of an application’s performance to better enhance efficiencies and productivity.” She adds: “We are always listening to our customers and seeking ways to enhance efficiency and reduce operating costs. This next generation modular flow switch offers greater flexibility and

functionality, while being very simple to set and operate. This, coupled with low air loss, makes the PF3A8#H-L the ideal product for those who Want to digitalise their processes and care about energy efficiency.” Through a bore type structure made of aluminium alloy, the PF3A8#H is incredibly durable. “This modular design reduces the required installation space, piping and wiring work. The brackets allow the flow switch to be retrofitted on steel pipes systems and into legacy SMC’s air service units. All the process data (flow, pressure, temperature) as well as identification and configuration data for the PF3A8#H-L is transmitted with a single M12 standard connector (no special IO-link cable is required)” Guiomar concludes. New-generation RV Manufacturer finds Campers like their Slide-ons Traditionally Tough, but with Electric Comforts too, thanks

Paints for Australian manufacturers We’ve got your back, the experts in paints for OEM.

A prize-winning manufacturer of slideon campers designed to withstand the extremes of the Australian climate and rigors of Outback tracks is finding a new generation of adventurers post-Covid is demanding more creature comforts as they venture into places they have never experienced.

• Faster Application • Faster Curing • Longer Lasting • Australian Made • Family Owned

Wedgetail Campers MD Darren Houston says many diehard traditional RV and 4wd owners are still happy to enjoy a basic life under the stars with the bare minimum of home comforts in the slideons, which fit a wide range of work vehicles used by contractors and tradesman. But their families, partners, pets and a new generation of male and female adventurers are not – “They want built-in toilets, showers and a host of electrical appliances – it is like some of them want to take their home with them on the back of a ute,” says Mr Houston, whose compact new model Hawk and larger Wedgetail camper raised eyebrows with camper media judges when they gave them awards for quality and innovation. (www. wedgetailcampers.com.au) “One of the judges said he never thought he would see the day when a fold-out camper came with a full internal shower and toilet,” he says. This compact water heater is finding new markets locally and globally among global RV, marine and work vehicle markets because of its versatile off-grid performance and because its clean, green design cuts fossil fuel pollution in pristine places, emitting no carbon monoxide or other hazardous and flammable gases in confined spaces. It also helps manufacturers such as Mr Houston achieve a clean-green vehicle that does not have to comply with new and increasingly rigorous regulations relating to the storage and use of gas. Aus J Hot Water Solutions Managing Director Jay King says Mr Houston’s Hawk design reflects the latest trends he is finding globally as an exporter catering to new generations of post-Covid campers setting out to enjoy their own countries – but in greater comfort than the traditional image of 4wd adventurers. “Our OEM users of the Duoetto in Asia, Europe and the US tell us there is a strong trend to comfort and cleanliness as more women and families get involved

NOVEMBER 2021 - JANUARY 2022

in adventure travel vehicles and boats. The old days of a fellow going out fishing or hunting for a week in the same set of clothes doesn’t cut it with new- generation male and female adventurers.”

Rolling in muck “Quite apart from making sure the kids are clean and there is hot water for the dishes, wherever they are, who wants a dirty pet dog snuffling into the RV after it has rolled in the sand, dirt, muck - or worse - and wants to shake itself? “One thing that has taken us pleasantly by surprise is the increasing degree of interest from both OEMs and individual users concerned about the hazards of different types of heaters posed for children, animals and remote area travelers themselves. These people (and older generation travelers too) prize the pristine local environments into which they are adventuring in the emerging post-Covid local travel boom,” says Mr King, whose company has sold more than 30,000 water heaters locally and globally. The tough, Australian-designed compact and durable Duoetto MK2 water heater (www.ausj.com.au) offers selectable temperatures between 30-75 deg C (86-158F) on 240V so people can

shower, wash, clean and enjoy abundant hot water whether mains power is available or not and without them having to store and carry additional fossil fuels on land or on the water. Jay King agrees totally with Darren Houston that more comfort is essential to the best RV designs because a lot of people don’t like to do it so rough any more. Increasingly, electrical power is being adopted to provide these comforts, says Mr King. Darren Houston says all people – including traditional and new-generation adventurers – want good engineering built into their product. “Quality and durability are what we have won prizes for. But the way of the future is increasingly moving towards compact electricity, cleanliness, and environmental safety, which is what the Hawk is engineered to provide from the outset.” Wedgetail & Hawk Campers 0458 130 106 wedgetailcampers.com.au

Australia's Superbug Situation Calls For New Solutions CSIRO and Cicada Innovations to support building of an antimicrobial resistance industry. Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has partnered with deep-tech incubator Cicada Innovations to deliver a free, online commercialisation course to help build an emerging industry of products and solutions to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when disease-causing bacteria, fungi, and other germs no longer respond to medicines such as antibiotics. These drug-resistant ‘superbugs’ are on the rise globally and make infections harder to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread and severe illness and death in animals and humans. There is an urgent need to address AMR and the clinical pipeline of new antimicrobials is dry. Currently, 700,000 people die each year from drug-resistant infections, and this is predicted to increase to up to 10 million deaths by 2050. Dr Branwen Morgan who is leading CSIRO’s developing Antimicrobial Resistance Mission, said new drugs alone will not solve the issue. “The drug pipeline is long and costly – we need innovative science, technology and engineering solutions to mitigate AMR now and into the future,” Dr Morgan said. “Potential solutions could range from antimicrobial coatings to integrated sensors and software that identifies the presence of AMR to alternative treatments and diagnostics.” “We have partnered with Cicada Innovations to offer the AMR Commercialisation 101 course, that will equip innovators with the knowledge and skills to commercialise new products that can make a significant impact in tackling this growing problem.” The course is open to SMEs and researchers regardless of experience in AMR, from any sector where technologies could be adapted to solve AMR challenges. Sally-Ann Williams, CEO of Cicada Innovations, said the new course will cover an introduction to the AMR landscape, commercialising medical technologies, introduction to lean start-up, idea and customer validation, and market analysis and competitive landscape. “This course is a gateway for innovators looking to gain a foundational understanding of AMR and how to validate an idea and make an impact,” Ms Williams said. “We’re calling on industry, SMEs and innovators to register for the free course

and take the first step in translating their ideas into a solution which can save lives.”

AMR is one of the greatest public health and biosecurity threats facing humanity.

The course builds on Cicada Innovation’s successful medical technology commercialisation programs. AMR Commercialisation 101 was launched today at the Antimicrobial Resistance Summit, a two-day event hosted by CSIRO in partnership with the Department of Health, the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment and Department of Industry, Science and Resources.

AMR expert quotes:

Michelle Bonello PhD MPH, Hub Manager | ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub - Antimicrobial Resistance, Kirby Institute, UNSW: “An excellent introduction to AMR landscape. Everyone should have this information. The concepts presented in Research Impact and fundamentals to commercialisation was an eye opener.”

The summit seeks to identify the innovative products, policies, and processes that could achieve the greatest impact on mitigating AMR in Australia.

“The quizzes at the end of the module are a good way to check you have taken in the learnings. Overall, this is an excellent AMR Commercialisation tool that would be useful to a broad audience.”

The World Health Organization has declared AMR one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity. It is also a significant animal welfare and biosecurity issue.

“This course would be excellent for pre-PhD students deciding between discovery-based versus applied/

translational research training. It clearly delineates the distinct goals and value in research done where commercialization is the immediate goal.” “The course structure lends itself equally to individuals, or to small student/ trainee groups who could discuss their learnings together.” Professor Tania Sorrell, AM, FAHMS | Professor and Co-Director, The University of Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases: “I think it [this course] is valuable for early career researchers and older researchers with a traditional academic background, i.e. those who have not been schooled in the lessons needed to successfully commercialise a product. It is easy to follow and interesting to listen to.” Jane O'Dwyer, CEO, Cooperative Research Centres Association: “The course is very professionally made with great content and provides an excellent introduction for any researcher thinking about leaping into commercialisation. The use of a peer-topeer approach is very engaging too.”

Tennant’s First Industrial Robotic Floor Scrubber Tennant Company, a world leader in designing, manufacturing and marketing of solutions to reinvent how the world cleans, is launching its newest and largest autonomous floor cleaning machine, the T16AMR Robotic Floor Scrubber. This industrial-grade autonomous scrubber is ideal for larger facilities. Featuring a wider scrub path and higher tank capacity, it allows for consistent, efficient cleaning while reducing total cost of ownership. This is the third AMR in Tennant’s lineup and the industry’s first AMR built on an industrial scrubber platform. The T16AMR robotic cleaning machine is the latest in Tennant’s worldclass AMR line. The T16AMR rider robotic scrubber operates in complex, real-world environments without direct operator control. This means the T16AMR is ready and available to clean any time—an especially valuable feature since staff shortages and increased cleaning protocols may overextend lean maintenance teams. In addition to delivering consistent and efficient floor cleaning, the T16AMR is connected via an

onboard telemetry system which provides supervisor notification of route completion and weekly reporting. “Tennant Company appreciates the additional pressures our customers have in ensuring consistent cleaning with fewer

resources. This is particularly problematic for those with large facilities. That’s why we’ve introduced the T16AMR, our largest autonomous machine to date. It will help customers increase their cleaning efficiency and maximize employee

resources,” said David Strohsack, Vice President of Marketing, Tennant Company. The T16AMR also reduces the total cost of ownership with a robust, industrialstrength platform and design, cleaning varying floor surfaces thoroughly in a single pass with the ability to run multiple routes, back-to-back, without assistance. Its twin cylindrical brushes easily clean and pick up small debris to prevent streaking and to reduce the need for pre-sweeping. Additionally, the T16AMR reduces or eliminates chemical usage with eco-H2O NanoClean® technology that allows for detergent-free cleaning. Onboard cameras, sensors and alarms help maintain the safety of employees working around the machine. Unique to the Tennant AMRs, longer-range LIDAR accommodates larger, open spaces; and onboard diagnostics make maintenance troubleshooting a breeze. Tennant Company 1800 226 843 www.tennantco.com.au

Planetary Gears as a Robust Solution to Deliver on Uptime With decades of experience in developing customized solutions for the most demanding mining applications around the world, Bonfiglioli offers its customers a wide range of solutions. From crushing to slurry processes to earth moving applications, Bonfiglioli designs and develops integrated solutions built to take on the harsh and dusty environments – typically found in mining applications. Martin Broglia, Managing Director of Bonfiglioli Australia/ New Zealand adds: “Our final drive, gearbox, gearmotor, motion and control solutions have been well received by the market. Today, our range of products is one of the broadest available in the world - with torques ranging from 13 Nm to 3,000,000 Nm.”

eavy-duty Sector Privy to H Preventable Issues

The heavy-duty sector is privy to downtime associated with maintenance issues. “This is a challenge that companies in the mining, quarry and other heavy-duty sectors grapple with on a regular basis” says Martin. “Any downtime can be costly; in the heavy-duty sector in particular, downtime can quickly add up. The old saying ‘time equals money’ couldn’t be more apt. Anything operating on a mine needs to be NOVEMBER 2021 - JANUARY 2022

robust as possible, therefore, doing ones’ research is key.” He adds that its important not to be short-sighted when making an investment. “You might spend less on an inferior product in the short-term, but the effects could be felt for years to come. When purchasing a quality product, you will spend more initially but the benefits to your bottom line will greatly exceed this”.

Bonfiglioli’s Solution for Feeders and Conveyors

Feeders and conveyors transport materials from one stage of the mining process to the next. Bonfiglioli is an expert on issues related to these applications: the high breaking torque required at start-up, the high load shocks caused by material drops and the dusty environments in mines are just some of the challenges that Bonfiglioli’s products can successfully overcome. “We provide complete solutions for feeders and conveyors with integrated base plates and torque arms that are protected against harsh environments. This can include special seals and paints to simplify machine design for our customers.” Martin adds that a suitable option

for this application is the combination of planetary and helical bevel heavy duty gear units. “The 3/H Series offers a unique combination of high torque density (associated with planetary gear units) and the robustness and high speed of helical bevel heavy-duty units”. He adds: “This configuration can provide great power transmission in a very compact space, thanks to its angular layout. The 3/H Series can also come with a set of features such as hydraulic couplings or cooling circuits, adapted according to customers' needs.”

The 300M Planetary Series

Adding to its portfolio for the mining industry, Bonfiglioli's Planetary Series 300M - is the ideal solution for all heavyduty applications where compactness is not an option. Explains Martin: “This series can be customised to an array of

applications thanks to its modular design”. “It operates without unwanted downtime - even in the harshest environments. This planetary gearbox achieves top-class flexibility thanks to several outputs, as well as input configurations available for all 20 sizes. In addition, it comes in torque range of 1,250...1,286,700 Nm.” The 300M Series can be completed with a wide range of electric motors entirely manufactured by Bonfiglioli. Asynchronous motors (BN-BE-BX/MME-MX) can be coupled with 300M Series gearboxes, providing a complete solution. Assembly and service for the 300M Series is done locally. Tough enough! Queensland is synonymous with healthy, delicious tasting fresh produce thanks to its unique climate, high altitude, and rich volcanic soil. This is where family-owned business, Howe Farming was born. Strategically located on the Atherton Table Lands of North Queensland, Howe is the country’s second largest producer of bananas, supplying the likes of Coles and Woolworths with fresh produce. Howe Farming Group consists of three companies – Howe Farming Enterprises, Avocados with Altitude and Howe Manufacturing. Explains Tim O’ Shea, Workshop Manager: “Our brands are Bananas with Altitude, Avocados with Altitude and Coffee with Altitude. When the first banana harvest began in 1996, it was noted that the fruit was significantly brighter, larger, and sweeter than other Cavendish bananas grown on the coast, and as such our “With Altitude” brands were born.” He adds: “Warm, humid conditions are ideal for bananas and thus our busiest time for bananas is during the summer months. Production slows toward the middle of the year as the weather cools; however, we continue to harvest for 52 weeks of the year.” Two to three million cartons of bananas are packed at three locations on the Atherton Tablelands – The Home Farm on Chewko Road, the Kay Road Farm, and the Steinhardt facility on the Kennedy Highway.

Going Bananas: Production Explained After a bunch (or hand) of bananas is bagged, it must mature and fill out before the fruit can be harvested. “Once it is ready, it is brought into the packing shed by our harvesting crews and so the packing process begins” Tim explains. The bananas are washed upon arrival and hands of bananas are then removed from their stalks and clustered into smaller bunches before being graded in a trough of water.” Once quality checks are completed, they are packed according to size, stacked on a palette, consigned, and chilled for at least 24 hours before dispatch. Quality is critical to Howe and Tim says that the company employs a fulltime Quality Assurance team to ensure the reliable and consistent flow of highquality produce. The build and repair of existing machinery across the farms is handled by Howe Manufacturing, while routine

56

maintenance is carried out by local mechanics. “We have built 45 bagging machines used to ripen bananas.”

Backed by the Best Powering Howe’s bagging machines is Bonfiglioli. The companies have been working together for the past 12 years. With a history spanning more than three decades locally, Bonfiglioli conceives, designs, and produces custom drives for a wide range of agricultural applications. These included sprayers, harvesters, feed mixers and forestry machines. “We look for low maintenance solutions and Bonfiglioli meets the brief” says Tim. Describing the application, Alan Young, Sales Manager for Bonfiglioli Queensland says that a mobile machine with a lifting platform is driven between the banana plants. “Making use of hydraulics, this machine is able to

navigate tough outdoor terrain and is used by operators when pulling bags over the bananas.” It features a compact planetary 600 series from Bonfiglioli as well as two gearboxes – one for free wheel and one with a brake motor.

“The 600 series is the best solution when designing wheeled off-road machinery. With a compact design, high torque and load capacities, a negative multi-disk parking brake and an optional disengagement device to tow the vehicle in an emergency, these solutions match the application requirements to the tee” says Alan. The greatest drawcard is its virtually indestructible composition. “Before we started making these machines, Howe owned other banana bagging machines and a variety of other wheel drives. They turned to us for a solution when the one fitted with Bonfiglioli never broke.” Describing the challenges faced by automation suppliers, Tim says that North Queensland is infamous for its harsh climate and all-year round, 24/7 crop production. “These machines live outdoor on the road and are often knee-deep in mud. There is also a lot of bailing string which comes off the crops and they tend to destroy the steel rings.” “Thankfully, Bonfiglioli has a steel mechanical floating seal so no string can get caught in it. It’s incredibly robust and requires very little maintenance”. “12 years into the partnership and we have never had to replace one machine due to mechanical manufacturing faults. These machines work 30 – 49 hours per week on average in incredibly harsh conditions. We are satisfied with the robust design and low maintenance of the Bonfiglioli products” concludes Tim.

A New Form of Chip Control Sandvik Coromant launches new software module for controlled chip breaking Sandvik Coromant has unveiled a new machining method that enables controlled chip breaking in thread turning applications. Launched within the existing CoroPlus® Tool Path software, OptiThreading™ is a new software module that will help manufacturers overcome one of the most significant issues within thread turning — the risk of chip jams and their associated downtime. CoroPlus® Tool Path software offers programming support for external and internal thread turning operations. The software generates NC codes based on cutting data parameters to secure the correct number of passes with evenly distributed cutting forces for optimal productivity, tool life and process security. Now, to enhance the software further, Sandvik Coromant has introduced a new module. A common problem in thread turning

is that chips coil around robots, chucks, tools and components. The chips can also get caught in conveyors, causing damage and equipment downtime. Successful chip control is the key for good component quality when thread turning. OptiThreading™ has been designed with these challenges in mind. The module is available as part of a subscription to the CoroPlus® Tool Path, and is developed specifically for CoroThread® 266 tools and inserts. Using the method and software, manufacturers can fully optimize their thread turning operations. As part of the solution, CoroPlus® Tool Path helps users develop optimized OptiThreading™ tool paths that specifically conquer the challenge of chip control. This is achieved by offering tool paths that deliver controlled, oscillating movements for interrupted cuts that go in and out of the cut on all passes except the last one. Supporting this cutting method delivers multiple benefits. Using

REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS

ON OVERHEAD CRANES

OptiThreading™, long chips that damage a component’s surface and interfere with the cutting zone are eliminated, improving component quality. It also results in less manual work removing long chips jamming the tool, the component or the chip conveyor, resulting in less unplanned machine stops. Using OptiThreading™ also makes it possible to increase cutting speeds for shorter cycle times and improved productivity. There are several reasons why OptiThreading™ and the CoroThread® 266 are suitably matched threading partners. OptiThreading™ creates high cutting forces, and thus needs a tool that

can withstand them. The CoroThread® 266 has an iLock interface that gives exceptional stability on insert indexing, making it capable of handling extreme forces. The tool is also available in a wide variety of assortments, with a selection of grades and geometries that cover most materials and applications. Together, the software and hardware solutions deliver secure, precise threading that is not hampered by poor chip control.
