Great for Australian Industry Brings New

There is no doubt that the recent AUKUS agreement between Australia, USA and the UK was a surprise to just about everyone on the planet!

Taking a closer look into the government’s decision to commit to the AUKUS alliance, much of what has been reported by mainstream media has been inaccurate or under-examined. Grave concerns about job opportunities, timeframes and of course safety have been prominent in the news, troubling members of the Australian public and the manufacturing sector at large. Industry Update interviewed Richard Price, Chief Executive

The growth of the manufacturing sector has been charted by the Ai Group Performance of Manufacturing Index, which peaked in March to a record high while marking 18 consecutive months of growth.

Sub Deal Good for Industry

Greetings from Quarantine

Mainstream media reports on the AUKUS submarine agreement, and what it will mean for Australian industry and manufacturers, have left me somewhat bewildered – with much of the media content being both uninformed and speculative. Emulating US or UK design, the programme will deliver thousands of jobs and upskilling of employees. It presents an enormous opportunity for growth in the Australian manufacturing sector. For this edition, we interviewed Richard Price from Defence SA who provided ample clarity on the situation. The Chief Executive of Defence SA since October 2017, Mr Price has worked within the defence and public safety sectors for over 25 years and has international industry experience in leadership, business development and engineering.

“Hundreds of people are already being added into the shipbuilding industry to meet today’s projects,” Mr Price said during our interview. “Outside of the nuclear-related systems, there is a lot of similarity with a conventional submarine in terms of industrial processes and construction. Another area is the combat system where Australian workers have great expertise.” Mr Price said. “The sheer fact that these submarines are 75% bigger in gross tonnage than the previous plan - this alone shows you there are many more hours of work required in construction.” An enlightening perspective and great news for our sector and Australia as a whole. For more, look to this issue’s cover story. Happy reading

This month saw me relocating from the UK and quarantining in Melbourne for the required fortnight. Here I experienced a lot of throat and nasal swabbing, word puzzles, lukewarm meals in boxes and an earthquake. Speaking of the earth moving, Enerpac is releasing a stream of technologies to accelerate the repurposing of construction sites. In the pursuit of greener, cleaner workplaces, the company is bringing an array of more energy-efficient pumps and decommissioning tools onto the market, as detailed in this issue. In a more reflective article, Paul Johnson, owner and director at Adept Conveyor Technologies reveals how a controversial decision made two decades ago has found his company in the fortunate position of being 100% sustainable today. The absence of any shipment delays means Adept is in the enviable

position of being able to supply product confidently and consistently during these challenging times. Nathan Wardell, too, has been acknowledged for his exceptional customer service. The managing director of Packserv made it into the Top 50 Small Business Leaders report that recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to their clients, community and society at large. Nathan discusses the journey Packserv has taken, the challenges he has overcome and the importance of having fantastic staff. Having endured the quarantine period, I echo Nathan’s sentiments about being surrounded by good people. This is one employee looking forward to the vaccination rates increasing, lockdown lifting and us all having the option to reenter a buzzing environment.

Federal Government Boosts Manufacturing with $30M Project A new global-leading medicine manufacturing facility is soon to be designed that will produce vital nuclear medicines and support 1000 highly-skilled jobs across the country. Replacing an existing facility in the southern Sydney suburb of Lucas Heights the site is the base for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) to make approximately 80% of nuclear medicine isotopes used to fight diseases such as cancer. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Angus Taylor announced that along with improving health care in Australia, the new project would also support nearly 1000 highly-skilled jobs. “Nuclear medicine is an essential part of an advanced healthcare system and helps save lives – that’s why we’re acting to secure a reliable nuclear medicine supply for future generations,” Mr Taylor said. “By funding the productive infrastructure that supports the delivery of nuclear medicine services, we are also investing in future industry development and in onshore, highly-skilled jobs such as nuclear medicine researchers, developers and practitioners. “It will also support radiopharmaceutical research and development and contribute to research translation and

medical industry collaboration, to improve health care in Australia.” Finance Minister Simon Birmingham made comment, saying: “Through this $30 million commitment, we’ve laid the foundations for this facility, with private sector

collaboration important to now realise its full benefits.” “There is huge potential for partnerships in this new state-of-the-art facility which will save Australian lives, support thousands of jobs and further enhance our sovereign capability in this important area of medicine.”

INDUSTRY POLITICS

Strengthen Supply Chains Through a Made in Australia Future

Hon Ed Husic MP, Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation Australia’s manufacturing selfsufficiency ratio is just 71.5 percent, ranking lowest of all OECD nations.

products, despite exporting 70 percent of our total agricultural production.

A recent Productivity Commission report into vulnerable supply chains highlighted that Australia relies on China for two-thirds of products listed as vulnerable imported products, and our economic complexity score remains depressingly low.

We can do better, and workers and businesses deserve better.

So, what does this mean for Australia? At the beginning of the pandemic it meant we had limited access to sanitiser, masks, and other forms of PPE. It then meant that we could produce just one vaccine onshore and were reliant on overseas supplies for other options. It means that we are far too dependent on imported food

For over 18-months now, we have continually heard that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed gaps in Australia’s critical supply-chains. But these vulnerabilities existed prior to the pandemic and will continue if we do not make the decision, as a nation, to properly invest in our manufacturing capabilities. In October last year, months into the pandemic, Mr Morrison announced what he framed as the panacea to Australia’s supply-chain vulnerabilities – the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy.

This program rightly identified priority industries, but the structure of the grants programs targets reducing the cost of capital, with no ambition to add depth to Australia’s domestic supply-chains. At a time where capital has never been cheaper, we must be more ambitious. Rebuilding our national manufacturing capability is essential to securing Australia’s future. This not only requires long-term strategic investment by government in businesses and skills, but also meaningful collaboration between researchers, industry, unions, and government. From mining to agriculture, we should not blindly accept digging up and shipping out our resources or

developing innovative technologies only to sell the IP overseas. When we do so we are shipping out opportunities for Australian workers and businesses. Where it is economically strategic to do so, we must build capability to service the needs of our own, and then export the surplus to our friends. It is incumbent on governments of all levels to harness the national momentum behind re-building Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capability to not only reinforce existing capability but create depth and breadth across supply-chains. Ed Husic is the Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation

CirPro (Australia) on the journey to Industry 4.0 with Siemens

CirPro (Australia), formerly Pirie Meats, have today signed an MoU with Siemens that outlines a number of areas of technical cooperation that will guide CirPro’s design and implementation of an advanced livestock processing facility planned for Port Pirie. With COVID-19 travel restrictions in place, the Chair and CEO of Siemens Australia, Jeff Connolly and CEO of CirPro, Reg Smyth, attended a virtual ceremony that formalised a relationship that has already started in support of detailed design. “As a greenfield facility, we have the opportunity to efficiently incorporate leading technologies and smart infrastructure solutions from Siemens that will set us on the best path to establish a modern processing facility that is ready for Industry 4.0,” according to CirPro CEO, Reg Smyth. “This MoU with Siemens means that we have access to knowledge across the broadest spectrum of technology with a single technology company. What I really want out of this is to develop a view of what’s possible - and I can’t think of another company that could deliver the breadth and depth of

OCTOBER 2021

knowledge and technology offerings that Siemens can,” he said.

“Embracing Industry 4.0 is critical as we prepare our competitive place in the world. But when it comes to business, what’s most important is the objectives such as speed, resource efficiency, flexible production, scalability, sustainability and so on. This is what drives competitiveness. When you look at this wholistically against the technology solutions available today in digitalization, automation and energy efficiency, you can achieve amazing outcomes. However, to really achieve maximum efficiency you need to include all aspects of the business end to end – everything from interactions with your supply chain to cyber security, smart building technologies and even types of skills needed to operate the plant,” said Mr Connolly. At a recent event, CirPro announced collaboration plans that support reduction of methane emissions from livestock fed on a seaweed supplement that will be grown in South Australia through to integration of unique Australian processing technology

that will support production of high-value materials suitable for human and medical use. The new processing lines will take material that has traditionally been low-value or not suitable for human use and optimise returns. Smyth reinforced “Embracing Australian innovation and advanced plant technologies from Siemens in this way is exciting, but will present challenges and require collective commitments to support an industry transformation that will create new market opportunities for Australian products, greater resilience and increased returns to farmers through to value-add product manufacturers. Siemens support for comprehensive digitalisation and traceability across this new supply chain will be fundamental to informing and protecting the quality, integrity, value and future growth of all products that come through our new facility.” On the issue of name change from

Pirie Meats to CirPro, Smyth clarified that “traditional protein is a significant part of what we will deliver, but there is so much new product that we will create for many markets. The CirPro brand will enable us to more appropriately engage with nutraceutical, medical, food processing and cosmetic markets and manufacturers, and it represents our commitment to ‘circular processing’ and sustainable production that is fundamental to meeting the demands and expectations of Industry 4.0 and the markets we serve.” Subject to detailed design completion and final Development Approval, CirPro is focused on commencing construction as soon as possible with processing commencing by early 2023. NEWS - LOCALLY MANUFACTURED

Locally Manufactured High Speed Doors Paints for Australian Industry • Faster Application • Longer Lasting • More Robust • Australian Made

Ever increasing energy costs are causing many companies to re-evaluate the climate-control requirements of their premises, and that includes taking account of the types of doors used – particularly on larger openings. There are many different types door on the market that can be used for large openings. However, the longer the time that any large area door is open (or partially open), the more air is exchanged between the indoor and outdoor environments. And in buildings with high frequency of traffic through the doorway, it is inevitable that any slow action type of door will regularly be left in the open position for longer than necessary.

• Family Owned

This can significantly increase the costs associated with heating the building in winter and cooling it during summer – especially in applications where the indoor climate is critical to processing operations or product storage. The simple solution is to install a DMF High Speed door, fully manufactured in Sydney. These fastacting doors offer an effective and reliable alternative to standard roller shutters or sectional type doors, and more efficient and user friendly then conventional PVC strip curtains. The door designs can be used for indoor or external applications in all types of facilities, including warehouses, production facilities, pharmaceutical clean areas, workshops, food processing facilities and stores.

OROPOLYMERS 13/10/21 9:28 am

With opening and closing velocities in the region of 1-2m/s (depending on size and model), DMF doors minimise the time the door is open and therefore help maintain climate control for temperaturesensitive areas, reducing draughts in

the workplace, reducing the ingress of weather and/or dust and fumes, and keeping vermin and birdlife out. The fast cycle time also improves premises security, with little chance of unauthorised people gaining access while the door is closing. One important factor to consider when choosing a high speed door is reliability, and the number of cycles between servicing. Whereas a slowacting roller door might be subject to three or four open/shut cycles per day, a fast-acting high-speed door will often be subject to 500 or more cycles per day. Sydney based DMF International Pty Ltd, have been manufacturing rapid roll doors for over 20 years in their well equipped factory, and now even have manufacturing in SE Asia under joint ventures with long term partners. All of the doors are custom manufactured to size and specification of the application, and their design team

can provide expert advice on the most efficient forms of automatic activation for the doors. A wide range of activation methods can be specified for each door, depending on the exact requirements of the application. These include pushbuttons, remote controls and swipe cards. Induction floor loops and various forms of active or passive motion sensors are popular options for warehousing and logistics applications. The drive system of our Series RL3000 door utilises simple “plug n play” technology, and is fully programmable, again allowing customising to suit the client requirements. The DMF range includes door blades manufactured from a durable reinforced flexible PVC, transparent PVC, and our new Coldsaver door blade in 15mm thick flexible PVC construction, making it ideal for coolrooms and freezers. Safety is always an important factor and while the doors comes with standard safety sensors to ensure safe passage of traffic, there is a vast range of additions that will enhance the safety action of the high speed doors. DMF also partners with Efaflex products, DMF International is uniquely positioned to offer these high quality high-speed doors to local customers. With trained partners Australia-wide, DMF can provide solid backup service, including maintenance support.

NEWS - AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURER

Adept at Adapting

Paul Johnson, Owner and Director of Adept Conveyor Technologies proves that hindsight can be 20/20 Many of us could be accused of looking at the past through rose-coloured glasses, but in the case of Adept Conveyor Technologies – it’s warranted. The company decided two decades ago to purchase a major shareholding in a German supplier of conveyor components. While it wasn’t the most logical decision, or one that was recommended, it is one that bore fruit. “At the time, like everyone else, we were being offered product from many sources, but all emanating out of south east Asia,” reveals Paul. “The decision made by the owners has proven to be possibly the most important business decision ever made by them,” he continues. Adept strengthened this relationship, investing further and stocking up on the German product, maintaining and storing it for years to come. This has resulted in Adept now being utterly self-sufficient in terms of all its stock requirements. “Who was to know that our local economy and that of the whole world would sink into the Covid era that we have all experienced over the past 20 months? Who could foresee the impact on

businesses that Covid would impart onto importers and manufacturers alike? Conversely, who could predict the massive increase and uptake in on-line sales and e-commerce in general and the impact that it would have on the transport industry country wide?” Paul muses. The company remained true to its moniker, purchasing even further stock. Now completely sustainable, Adept doesn’t have to rely on regular and time-sensitive shipments of imported product and the associated freight delays unfortunately being experienced by many of their competitors in this precarious landscape. Through their sister company, MRT Australia, and the cross-ownership with their German partner, Adept have embarked on a continuous “top up” programme of stock purchase as it is consumed by the factory, meaning that it has a continuous trickle effect that keeps their stock levels at a maximum. “What does that mean for the customers of Adept?” Paul asks. “It means that Adept has maintained “normal” manufacturing and shipping times, where our competitors have been, and are continuing to, experience ongoing and

ever-increasing delays.” “Yes!” the owner and director enthuses. “Adept can supply – on time.” But what of the observations of the sales team? What challenges have been

overcome and what can be forecast? Find out in Industry Update’s next issue. Adept Conveyor 02 9771 4655 adeptconveyor.com.au

NEWS

How Enterprise Resource Planning Might Revolutionise Manufacturing

Kevin Dherman, Chief Innovation Officer at SYSPRO, shares his outlook The last eighteen months literally changed the status quo for manufacturers and distributors. Within a short timeframe, the industry had to contend with continuous supply chain disruptions, operational inefficiencies and the increased need for remote collaboration. In fact, our research from 2020 showed that 45% of businesses were unable to operate at the same levels of distribution efficiency enjoyed before the pandemic. While some are finding a sense of stabilisation in the short-term, the pandemic has also laid the foundations for several long-term challenges in the industry. The pandemic opened the door for new competitors, an increased need for predictive data and a need for new customer-centric business models.

Many believe that digital acceleration could be the answer to addressing these challenges proactively, to ultimately secure a digital future. Here is how.

1. The Challenge: The Ascent of the Small Business Disruptor

We’ve all heard of industry disruptors such as Netflix that disrupted the traditional entertainment sector and of course Uber that disrupted the taxi business. These game-changing, innovative start-ups entered the industry with a new customer centric business model, displacing conventional business models as we know them. They had a complete understanding of changing customer needs. It therefore comes as

INSTRUMENTAT I ON & CALIBRATION PTY LTD S P E C I A L I S T S www.ams-ic.com.au AMS have been suppliers of instrumentation and calibration equipment to all industries since 1973 representing some of the world’s leading manufacturers of the equipment in their field.

no surprise that disruptors are starting to shift the dial in the manufacturing industry too. During the pandemic, the world realised that manufacturing was not as agile as it should have been. With a reliance on manual processes and legacy systems, manufacturers simply could not respond quickly enough to industry disruptions and customer requirements. This left a gap in the market, with the subsequent emergence of smaller, niche players that could address direct customer needs because of their ability to tap into emerging technologies and the right capabilities to compete in the marketplace.

The Solution: Levelling the Disruption Playing Field with ERP

To compete at a greater scale, replacing manual or legacy systems is key to improving visibility of critical data, increasing productivity, reducing waste, lowering production costs, enabling greater quality control and improving the management of schedules and production rates.

Having accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels will provide additional competitive advantage. An ERP system can support this by allowing businesses to analyse forecasted demand, accurately predict production targets and meet demand levels. ERP can also automate the process of balancing material supply, as well as product and service demand.

2. The Challenge: B2B takes the leap towards B2C

Flow Measurement Specialists

www.ams-ic.com.au sales@ams-ic.com.au

12

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

The pandemic also shone a spotlight on the importance of a digital customer experience and opened the door for eCommerce opportunities. In fact, our 2020 study showed that 67% of businesses who had the ability to initiate digital strategies such as eCommerce, digital supply chains and remote working could continue to trade effectively during the pandemic. These businesses also leveraged APIs to plug into other eCommerce platforms such as Amazon to further widen the supply chain.

The benefits of shifting from a B2B to a B2C model are far reaching. This means companies now have direct access

to their customer base 24/7, the ability to gather customer data to improve operational efficiencies, and the ability to innovate.

The Solution: Achieve Agility with ERP

It is now customers, not production efficiency, which defines the future of a manufacturer. With this in mind, ERP can help ensure that a business is digitally enabled to grow, while improving the overall customer experience. Not only is it adaptable enough to allow integration with other platforms, but it also removes the burden of managing physical software updates and the need to plan for downtime.

3. The Challenge: Data is a Deal-Breaker

During the pandemic, manufacturing businesses were suddenly faced with supply chain disruptions with little to no ability to predict future developments. Real-time data analysis and connectedness is vital for greater visibility across the supply chain to ensure that the right levels of inventory and raw materials are ordered and delivered, in the right quantities, and at the right price. Data has therefore become a deal breaker in ensuring customer and supplier success.

The Solution: ERP as a single source of truth

Manufacturers are learning that ERP systems make it easier to leverage the deluge of data that's coming in from connected sensors in their factories, inventories, and raw materials, and from signals along the supply chain. ERP also allows businesses to operate with realtime data while automating tasks. The key to success in this new digital era is selecting an ERP platform that is built from experience and designed with the needs of manufacturers and distributors in mind. By integrating the operations into an ERP platform, organisations can ensure agility, connectedness and embrace innovation to transform their businesses for enhanced growth and long-term sustainability.

Australian Manufacturing Week Exhibition postponed The Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL) have announced changes to the schedule for next year’s Australian Manufacturing Week (AMW) exhibition, relocating and rescheduling the event from Melbourne in March to Sydney in June. The AMTIL Board has decided not to proceed with the AMW 2022 exhibition that had been scheduled to take place at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre (MCEC) from 8-11 March 2022. The decision was taken in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria and the resultant uncertainty over the viability of large public events so early in 2022. “The AMTIL Board met last week and made the very difficult decision not to proceed with the show in its current March 2022 timeslot,” said Shane Infanti, Chief Executive Officer of AMTIL. “Despite the great support we have for the exhibition from all our exhibitors, recent developments relating to the COVID-19 Delta strain have created an unpredictable environment that we felt had the potential to seriously jeopardise the event given that it is so early in the New Year.” With the Melbourne event not going ahead, AMTIL is now moving forward with plans for a rescheduled event to take place later in the year in a different location. A venue has been secured to hold AMW from 7-10 June 2022 at the International Convention Centre

Sydney (ICC Sydney). AMTIL is confident that by June the current COVID-19 outbreak will have been contained, and high vaccination levels will allow the staging of large public events.

Nuclear Submarines

Great for Australian Industry Continued from cover

submarine in over 50 years of continuous operations, so any incidents heard about have not been nuclear incidents they are accidents in terms of collisions; there have been no nuclear incidences on any submarines,” Mr Price says. “What I really want to stress is there is a really strong focus on the people that are involved in the industry - to make sure that they are experts in what they’re doing, and the processing and testing is there to back it up and make sure that everything that they do is as safe as it can be.” “There is no refuelling. This is why the US submarines have been selected. Those are the only western submarines, they may even be the only submarines in the world, certainly the only ones that are accessible to us that you don’t need to refuel during their lifespan.

opportunities. Hundreds of people are being added into this industry.” While the agreement has given rise to the ever-present concerns about Australia relying on overseas imports, the concept of a completely Australian build is, at this point, an unrealistic one. What this will mean for the country’s manufacturing growth and capabilities as a whole should be examined. “I don’t believe in percentages, they become everything and what matters is the industrial capabilities – to operate a submarine safely and independently and something that makes sense for Australia to do from an economic perspective.

“Obviously there is a lot of focus on the submarine programme, but at the same time there were announcements of the Collins life-of-type extension, the Hunter Class Frigate programme so it’s really important for people to understand our workforce is growing – there is massive expansion with hundreds of people being added each year. We’re not waiting decades – this is happening now on those programmes. “I think one of the concerns I have is the announcement of this decision is interpreted by people that jobs are only going to be offered in the future; well they’re not, there are plenty of jobs in the shipyard and related industries today and it’s important that people seek out those

This being said, the drive to keep as much manufacturing on our shores is a constant objective, as Ed Husic, shadow minister for industry attests. “There have been so many naysayers: ‘It’s not worth doing this anymore, just ship it offshore’, but we think ‘No’,” he says of the opposition’s stance on such decisions. “This is what the pandemic has shown us - we really need to attend to this as a national priority and that’s what we’re

Hon Ed Husic MP, Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation

committed to do.” “[We want to] give the best possibility now for Australian industries to work with government in a way to reconfigure their own futures that hasn’t happened before.” While the date of 2040 for completion of the first submarine is being bandied about, things historically have happened much faster.

“So, I imagine the nuclear reactor will come from overseas ready to go which will be installed into the submarine. It is then connected up and tested. It isn’t even dangerous at this point as it isn’t even started. Then, at some point during the conditioning time, the reactor is brought online and then it’s never, ever turned off until it is decommissioned in 25 years – which I think is the life of those reactors. It runs for 25 years then it’s turned off and again I will imagine it will go back to where it came from to be defueled and dismantled safely.” Regarding employment opportunities, once again the news is profoundly encouraging. While many manufacturers from the automotive industry have already transferred into other sectors in South Australia, the scope is there for further crossing-over and upskilling.

“So, what are the capabilities we need and what will build our industrial base? You’re never going to build every part so there is always an element that is coming in from overseas in any build.”

“When the US first agreed to transfer the UK technology to start their nuclear submarine programme, which was in the late 1950s, the British had their first submarine within 3-4 years of that decision. Now, in this day and age, it’s not possible to work that quickly but that gives you an indication if we really put the effort in, 2040 or even earlier is perfectly achievable,” Mr Price reveals.

Richard Price, Chief Executive of Defence SA

“I have been of the view that Australia doesn’t have a broad enough industrial base and there are more things we can and should be doing when it comes to manufacturing. “I don’t like to talk about percentage content. If we can produce value-added systems that not only support submarines but can be part of the global supply chain for other countries, it’s a far better outcome. “Not only is it showing Australian know-how and technology, it’s also sustainable because you’re not relying on one customer, so for the business itself it makes more sense, and they can generate revenue that they can reinvest in their own businesses. You end up then with a selfsustainable industry opposed to one that is constantly relying on subsidy. “Australia and South Australia will end up with a bigger economic impact than we would have had.”

Support for Australian Manufacturing on the Rise The general public view manufacturing as vital to our nation’s economy and critical to maintaining our high-living standards according to recent research carried out by the Federal Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC). When comparing data gathered preCOVID-19 to today, it was evident that support for the manufacturing industry is on the rise. The AMGC report, which can be accessed here: www.amgc.org.au/wp-content/ uploads/2021/09/AMGC-PublicPerceptions-Report-2021.pdf highlighted the following: • 72% (+7% from 2019) of Australians believe manufacturing is important, or very important to the economy. (Page 9) • Double the number of respondents believe manufacturing will get stronger in the coming years, compared to responses in 2019. (Page 20) • 79% of Australians perceive trade and export of manufactured goods are

important to the economy. (Page 9) • Tasmania, Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia rate manufacturing more highly than the Eastern States. (Page 10) • The importance of manufacturing is rated more highly in regional areas, compared to metro. (Page 10) • 69% (+6% from 2019) of Australians believe manufacturing is important to maintain our standard of living. (Page 11) • Manufacturing perceived as the 7th most important industry to the Australian economy (+4 from 2019) relative to other industries. [NB: the top six industries amongst others are also manufacturing]. (Page 12) • The appreciation of manufacturing and its importance increases with age, for example, ~85% of Australians over 65 agree manufacturing is important to the local economy. (Page 13) • 80% of Australians believe it is important to purchase local products where possible (Page 18)

• 63% believe these products are of higher quality and 58% noted that locally made products were worth paying a premium for. (Page 18) • Almost half of the respondents view Australian manufacturing as high-tech and globally competitive. (Page 19) AMGC research estimates that manufacturing contributes over $100

billion to the local economy each year, representing 10 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – instead of the often quoted 6 per cent. This same data reveals that manufacturing directly employs 1.27 million Australians, 30 per cent higher than official figures while creating 3.6 indirect roles elsewhere in the economy for every direct manufacturing role.

AUSTRALIAN MADE "Everyone in this Business is Multi-Skilled and Enormously Talented" Nathan Wardell of Packserv is bringing ground-breaking new capabilities to the marketplace but remains a team player When he was named one of the Top 50 Business Leaders in Australia, Nathan Wardell was “surprised and delighted”, but was quick to add “it’s probably a compliment for the team rather than me personally, but that’s the nature of the award. It was lovely to receive such an acknowledgement when so many of us are under pressure.” Displaying remarkable agility, this Managing Director has developed machinery at Packserv that has never been seen before in the industry. “The machinery being developed at the moment features the latest in PLC control and we are working through the capabilities of IIoT (The Industrial Internet of Things) and adopting techniques from Industry 4.0 and 5.0 for integration into larger production lines,” he explains. “We have always had a focus on Modular Automation, the ability to add and subtract processes from a production line quickly and painlessly by making machinery talk to each other individually. There are a few businesses out there that specialise in larger more automated machines, but everything is attached together, and adding and subtracting processes simply isn’t possible.

“We bring to market a unique range and ability, I describe it as big adults’ Mechano set, where you can build the production system based on individual components that can be added and subtracted at any time. This is helpful in various situations, not the least of which is whole factories or even production lines that are inoperable because of an issue with one machine that can’t be exchanged… that simply isn’t the case with Packserv systems. “For large enterprises the bigger more automated machinery and production lines feature all sorts of high-end technology, unfortunately that technology is only available to businesses acquiring machinery in that end of the market. The developments we are pursuing is pulling that technology down and developing it, at a size, scale and cost that makes it available for SME FMCG manufacturers allowing them to compete on a more even playing field with larger local and international manufacturers by adopting higher end technology and automation, bringing down the cost per unit increasing profitability and enabling businesses to increase their reach with smarter and more sustainable packaging.” On the topic of sustainability, this

16

was a major focus for the company during their 2019 expansion. “One of our key suppliers was being sold and an international investor was involved, and we simply didn’t have any confidence in the ongoing quality and supply, which was going impact our clients. So, expanding our own facility to allow us to manufacture in-house was necessary. “Diversifying by developing our inhouse engineering capabilities, moving into larger facilities, and investing in machinery, hardware, technology, talent and tooling we were able design, build our own machines and parts for the existing fleet of machines, and we are continually improving that range. “Self-sustainability has been key especially in terms of Covid and our ability to provide timely support to our local clients,” says Nathan. Encouraging Australians to support Australian-owned and Australian-made products has always been a primary consideration for Packserv, who now have offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. “We were always a member of Ausbuy, and for many years before it closed, we were a strong supporter of Australian Made and local industry.

“All of the equipment in our rental fleet in the first 10 years of the business came from local manufacturers or distributors… it just made sense to have local support, equipment and parts to support our clients. “It has been great to see various organisations pick up and continue flying the flag for onshore manufacturing and engineering. For many years I have watched our marketplace trend at different levels towards buying internationally, with various amounts of success,” Nathan reflects. “I remember having a booming year in 2011 when the trend of offshore manufacturing peaked, we were so busy running around providing equipment and technical to many businesses who had received goods with issues, labels, seals, caps not being screwed on tight. It’s been good to see local business grow especially in the number of SME’s we support. “In my experience helping FMCG businesses over 25 years if you can buy local it just saves so much pain when you need parts, service, or technical support, no delays or months in shipping if something breaks, if you can pick up the phone and call someone locally it’s just a massive advantage, and time saving has been massive.”

Nathan Wardell - Managing Director, Packserv Australia Pty Ltd

The Packserv team is comprised of a of diverse range of specialists, who Nathan credits for keeping this innovative company in its constant state of evolution. “Packaging and automation isn’t one of those mainstream career choices, so HR can be a bit tricky,” Nathan reveals. “When you are looking for a machinist or a fabricator, its usually an obtainable skill set, but when you are looking for a technician that’s a whole other story. Sometimes you can find someone who has experience with hydraulics or pneumatics or electronics or maybe is just mechanical… but never have I been able to find someone who has it all. You have to teach someone the missing pieces, and because our range of machinery is so diverse no one person has experience with all the different types of technology. “Generally, we would take about 12-24 months to develop a good tech who can go out to just about any job and get it done. “We have deliberately hired talent from different industries, with different experience and skill sets, and I love that our team are constantly learning from each other. “Packaging is such a diverse industry. A CAD designer can draw it, a machinist can make it, a fitter can install it, a technician can put it in place and turn it on, a line setter can set it up and tune it, and an operator can make it work…. but I am yet to meet someone who can crossover the whole process. “All of our technical team receive the most diverse training we can provide. What is that expression: A jack of all trades is a master of none, but is always

OCTOBER 2021

better than a master of one? Everyone in this business is multi-skilled and enormously talented.” Working collaboratively is something that is truly embraced at Packserv, who have also partnered up with Australian Universities. “We work quite closely with NSW Business, who have been amazing at connecting us with organisations at the cutting edge of technology,” Nathan explains. “We spend a lot of time working on advance technologies, whether it’s in materials and additive manufacturing, or process engineering and the techniques we use to make our parts and equipment. “The University of Wollongong has an amazing 3D printing lab; The University of Technology Sydney is right at the forefront of the latest in digital technology and is an amazing place to spend time.

“The NSW Government via Business NSW has been so helpful, also, with including me in the Entrepreneurs Program with the Department of Industry who have been a massive help in connecting us to the right people and helping with grant applications. We have some really exciting developments in the technology we use being put to work in our innovations department, that will form part of the advancements in our new machinery.” Although enjoying accolades and exponential growth, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for the company. “Packserv has been hit pretty heavily over the years by just about everything that could be thrown at it, from both the GFCs when we first started, a manufacturing sector-slump as industry moved offshore, then a recession… it’s been an amazing relief to be one of the few businesses and industries that landed on the right side of Covid,

actually growing 40% just in the last 6-12 months. The demand for our products, services and technical support has never been so high. “We have seen over the last year-and-a-half a drop in imports, slower shipping, a lot of businesses internationally unable to supply, dramatic increases in time frames, all this along with a strong local demand for FMCG products, a local government and economy that has realised our over dependence on imported goods, and spike in the demand for quality locally manufactured products. “It has been a delight to be depended on and work more closely with our clients as the marketplace moved more towards local support and supply chains.” So, if this business leader could look into the future, what does he think he would see ahead? “Wow, everything…” says the evermotivated MD. “I know we have done a lot, even just in the last year, but there is this feeling in the business that we are only just getting started. “The word ‘more’ comes to mind… more machinery, more advanced technology, more equipment, more talented team members, more clients who we can help thrive in our local manufacturing sector, and probably more markets. “It would be amazing to see Packserv machinery on the international trade show circuit… maybe some time next year.” Packserv 1300 377 512 www.packserv.com.au

The Australian Made Campaign is thrilled to announce that the iconic Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) kangaroo logo is now a registered trademark in Japan and protected under local Japanese law. The symbol’s registration in Japan further protects the logo in the Japanese market, with licensed Aussie makers and growers the only group allowed to harness the logo’s power. Australian Made Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro, said “One of the great strengths of the logo is its ability to clearly identify Australian goods in export markets, making it a valuable marketing tool for makers and growers. For more than 35 years the iconic green and gold logo has aided Aussies in taking their goods abroad and trademark registration in Japan further enhances this.” “The Japanese market has long presented a great opportunity for Aussie makers and growers. The formal registration of the logo in Japan provides an essential legal framework which exporters can rely upon if the logo is copied or used without proper authority.” According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia exportedA$53,763 million worth of merchandise to Japan during the 2019-20. Moreover, according to research conducted by Horizon Consumer

Enmin Vibratory Equipment a Key Ingredient in Fine Foods Continued Growth For more than 40 years, Victorianbased Enmin has been building custom vibratory and material handling solutions for a myriad of applications and environments. The company’s vast knowledge and expertise in this area has seen their list of customers grow to include most of Australia’s leading food industry manufacturers.

to increase in the future.

One of these long-term customers is leading snack manufacturer Fine Food Holding (FFH) based in Keysborough, Victoria. The company was established around 7 years ago by FMCG specialist Jim Leckey and his partners. Together they shared a clear vision of developing and producing a range of innovative, high quality specialty snacking products.

A mechanical engineer by trade, complemented by a number of business qualifications, Mr Leckey has been intimately involved with the FMCG category all his working life. He has worked across a diverse range of food categories that includes soft drinks, dairy, sauces, and baking products.

To say the company has been successful is something of an understatement. From starting with just six employees, FFH now have around 250 staff with the company supplying both domestic and export markets including the US and Europe. FFH have an extensive range of premium snacking crackers that include wafer crackers, seeded crisps and seeded flatbreads. Combining grains, fruit, nuts and herbs, the biscuits are an ideal partner for cheese and other toppings. In keeping with current customer trends, a gluten free range is also available.

The company’s phenomenal growth is directly related to its undertakings and significant investment in R&D. ‘Rapid innovation’ is essential in this market to develop new products that cater to an increasingly sophisticated palette of health focussed products that the market demands.

“I’ve had a long association with Enmin spanning 15 years and in particular with General Manager Anthony Gallaher. When we started FFH we needed a range of vibratory equipment and other material handling solutions and time was of the essence. My previous dealings with Enmin provided me with the confidence that they could meet our equipment requirements and crucially our time frames. We were not let down,” Mr Leckey said.

The company supplies its products to a broad range of outlets including major supermarket chains and specialty deli shops across Australia.

Over the last few years Enmin have supplied FFH with an extensive and diverse range of food handling equipment including biscuit handling systems, vibratory feeders, cheese depositing systems, biscuit breaking equipment, conveyors and operator work platforms.

The export market accounts for around 20% of total revenue and is likely

“As our business has expanded, Enmin has evolved with us and they’ve

proven to be a great business partner,” Mr Leckey went on to say. “One of Enmin’s key strengths is their ability to design and fabricate a customised product that suits our specific production needs. When we’ve needed a piece of equipment to solve a particular issue they’ve always taken on the challenge and ultimately provided us with a high-quality bespoke unit,” Mr Leckey added. “We choose Enmin products due to their superior design, high quality and proven reliability, backed up with excellent customer service. The quality of the finished product is always outstanding and meets all our hygiene standards. “Our equipment runs 24 hours, 6 days

a week – we can’t afford anything but the best and Enmin equipment meets that requirement and provides exceptional up-time,” Mr Leckey concluded. Increased demand for Enmin’s products and services has necessitated a move recently to a much larger factory in Braeside, Victoria. These new premises are three times the size, allowing Enmin to increase its production capacity, bring more of the manufacturing process in-house and offer a broader range of support services. CASE STUDY - A-SAFE

A Truly Winning Combination Independent Consultant Alan Lewis and Mark Collins from A-SAFE Australasia Pty Ltd, supplier of polymer safety barriers, talk about their joint project with the booming appliance company. The growth of Winning Appliances has been astronomical in recent years, which meant they needed large facilities to allow for their rapid expansion. When it came to establishing their new 45,000 square metre warehouse in Altona, Victoria, the company relied on the expertise and experience of logistics consultant Alan Lewis, who in turn called upon Mark Collins, director of A-SAFE Australasia, to ensure all the client’s barrier and safety needs were met and in accordance with PAS13 Code of Practice from Warehouse and Traffic Management. The A-SAFE range was the most impressive and appropriate the market could offer. “I ran the Winning Group tender process for the site - a significant space. So, there are various streams I had to manage such as safety barriers for the whole facility. I went to various providers, of which A-SAFE was one of them. Upon discussing the requirements of Winning Appliances with Mark in detail, and looking at the benefits of A-SAFE barriers over traditional metal barriers, A-SAFE barriers were implemented into the project. “The main idea of the A-SAFE barriers is to separate pedestrians from any moving machinery while been rated for impact – steel barriers aren’t rated. The idea of an A-SAFE barrier is to absorb energy without damage to the barrier or the concrete floors. The forklift drives away – no damage to your concrete, no damage to your barriers. The barriers are tested and certified,” expands Mark. When it came to Winning’s particular requirements, Alan felt A-SAFE was the best fit. “Top of their priorities was safety. So, separation of machinery and pedestrian foot traffic was paramount. That was a tick, obviously. Then, if you imagine, a forklift is obviously metal, and with a metal barrier, you can cause damage not only to the

barrier but to the machine itself. Whereas A-SAFE a barrier (made of polymer) takes the energy, takes the impact, and doesn’t result in as much damage as other providers products might,” Alan explains. “During the competitive tender, obviously, I sold the client different options. I’d worked with Mark previously, for another major retailer in Australia, King Living. So, I took the client up to King Living to show them exactly what A-SAFE looked like, the feedback from that client as well was part of the decision-making process. It came down to a commercial decision as well. I’m sure Mark will tell you I did a good job on negotiating! It was a fair price for what I believed was a superior product.” Another drawcard for customers when it comes to A-SAFE is its move to implement an Australian barrier standard. A-SAFE, along with a university and some key customers have created a code of practice called the PAS 13:2017 Code of Practice for safety barriers used in traffic management within the workplace with test methods for safety barrier impact resilience. This marks the beginning of a standard and provides clients such as Winning a valuable point of reference.

Alan, a native Yorkshireman, arrived here in Australia back in 2006. “I worked in 3PL (third party logistics) in the UK, generally with DHL, but partnering with Unilever and others. I was headhunted by Coles in 2006 and spent five years in Perth opening a 90,000 square metre site for them. It went very, very well, Coles moved me over to Melbourne and eventually to Sydney to do the general logistics for NSW. “I left Coles in 2012 and joined the Winning Group. So spent five years with John Winning on the first supply chain strategy change, so my first partnering with Winning was as a permanent employee – the logistics officer for Winning. “I basically moved all the sites into new sites, changed warehouse management systems, developed a management team for the business as well and drove that customer interface. I left Winnings after five years, joined Nick Scali, spent a couple of years there doing the same thing – new warehouses, new warehouse management systems – that’s my… sort of… call,” Alan reveals. “Then two-and-a-half years ago I decided to go out on my own. I’m an independent consultant now. Generally, I

aim towards big and bulky retailers – like the Winning Group, King Living, Bing Lee. I’ve worked for some pharmaceutical businesses, transport business. But what I really look to do is warehouse design, warehouse fit-out and warehouse ‘go live’. So, I’ll go into a retail business, design what their future should look like from an operational perspective, work out the commercial benefits, look at the growth of their business and what that will do for their customer service. So, trying to get that win, win, win all the way round, I guess.” With the Winning Appliances project now successfully completed, Alan and Mark are looking to collaborate again, and the presence of the pandemic has been a game-changer for both their companies. “Everyone’s realised now their volumes have grown but they can’t always cope with that growth. So, there is a bit of a mad scramble at the moment where businesses are looking for bigger facilities,” says Alan. “They need a bigger inventory holding to satisfy demand. It’s well publicised globally while people have been in lockdown, they’ve had to switch to the online method of purchasing and coming out of lockdown - it’s sticking. What does that do for business? It means bigger operations. This means more people, and you have to keep them safe… so that’s why I’ll continue to partner with people like Mark.” A-SAFE (02) 9625 8927 www.asafe.com

Earlier this year, an opportunity came across Dan and Tim’s desks – one that they couldn’t ignore. Austral Alloys has a strong reputation for producing quality products and this coupled with an experienced workforce, presented them with an opportunity that reminded them of successful acquisitions in the past. “We’ve got a history of buying businesses with a good, experienced, bluecollar workforce,” says Dan, who is now one of the company’s directors. “Our business philosophy is that we find older businesses and attempt to inject a combination of new people and improved systems - and we find that this helps grow the business and improve the bottom line.” “We introduce ‘corporate governance’ through a strong board of directors. With companies like Durst and Austral Alloys we feel the existing managers have been paddling the boat themselves, so when you bring additional resources in at that senior level, you find that you have more oars in the water, you can build better momentum and achieve greater outcomes. History also tells us that we can eliminate some problems that they may have encountered in the past. “We have a 15 plus year relationship with the St.George bank. Like ourselves, we believe St.George are interested in building long-term relationships. We have a developed a great rapport with our relationship manager, Matt Kelly, so when a good opportunity comes our way, we have no hesitation in approaching St.George to obtain the financial assistance required to get the deal over the line.” As this is the consortium’s second manufacturing acquisition in recent years, it of course leads one to believe that they have a very positive view of the future of this sector in Australia. “We all hope manufacturing in Australia is going to see a resurgence following the covid pandemic. Austral Alloys is experiencing an influx of enquiries at the moment, I think because people are done with sourcing products offshore and their preference would be to deal with a local manufacturer” says Dan. “What we’ve been led to believe, and what we’ve witnessed ourselves is, a lot of the components that we make that

OCTOBER 2021

might have been imported from overseas in the past but they are heavier and bulky objects, and they’re not suitable for air freight. In the past these products tend to be imported via shipping, and the container cost for shipping has increased significantly in the past twelve months.

portfolio for this group?

“Freight costs are all of a sudden making the local manufacturer look a lot more of an attractive alternative. And shipping times! Once people could rely on shipping times - now they’re less reliable, and this is having a knock on effect. This is another reason people are looking and turning to local manufacturers.”

“We believe there’s a few years work ahead to make the improvements we can. We’re ready to inject some “new blood” and youth into the business to complement the experienced workforce and management. Further down the track, once some traction has been gained, it’s an industry that would lend itself to acquisitions and bolt-on businesses. Never say never, but we’ve got plenty on our plate at present, especially considering we are also dealing with the challenges that a global pandemic present.”

“Some manufacturing sectors that have been completely dismantled in Australia, like car manufacturing – and these probably won’t be re-established from the ground up again but some of the smaller industries, for example the foundry industry, might get a bit of a resurgence as they will be a lot more attractive to the local marketplace,” forecasts Dominic. When it comes to differentiating from Durst, the Directors clarify: “Durst is slightly different. It doesn’t make as many of the components, it’s more of an assembly business and a distribution business. Whereas Austral Alloys has a heavier manufacturing component. They are similar in that there is an environment of blue-collar workers, experienced management and both enjoy a large, diverse and loyal client base.” So, are we to assume that this is the beginning of a bigger manufacturing

“One opportunity at a time!” laughs Dominic. “There are significant improvements and systems we want to implement at Austral Alloys and these are going to take time, energy and expertise to maximise the potential upside.

Tim extrapolates: “We are also committed to spending money, improving the workers facilities. Compared to modern standards, the existing facilities are probably subpar. We want to improve them, improve the laboratory, the front office and ensure everyone enjoys coming to work every day.” One point of difference that the consortium would like to focus on moving forward is to ensure we continue to value our client base, and ensure we strive every day to exceed their expectations. We’re not such a big organisation that we’ve lost touch with our clients but we’re certainly bigger and more professional than a backyard operation.”

“We bring a mindset that you need to spend money to make money - you need to invest to grow. Not all managers think like that. We are long-term players. We are genuinely interested in this industry,” says Stephen. “They [the workers] have a very good reputation for delivering a very good quality product and if it’s not up to scratch, they put it back in the melting pot and start again.” Dan continues. Austal Alloys is unique in the foundry industry in that it heats and moulds up to 350 plus different alloys, whereas most of its competitors would predominately deal with approximately 12. “We provide for an incredibly wide and diverse client sector. We were pleasantly surprised to discover the sectors that utilise Austral Alloys to produce castings, include agriculture, mining, wind generation, yacht building – it’s quite incredible,” Tim says. “They’ve also got a number of very good clients that are growing progressively, and one of the immediate challenges is for us to grow with them. The timing’s good – we’ve come on board. We’re committed to investing the money, energy and expertise to capitalise on what we see as a business with untapped potential. It is very exciting.”

Specification range of qualified products is determined by key process parameters, such as injection and pressure holding time, injection starting position, minimum buffer, injection peak pressure, and so on, thus providing guidance for automatic quality inspection. It can identify and distinguish

SCFM Smart Clamping Force Management

The SCFM system independently developed by YIZUMI is a new upgrade based on the auto adjustment mode according to the clamping force. The SCFM system offers functions such as real-time measuring, smart recommendation, no-stop adjustment, and auto-holding to assist operators controlling the injection molding machine in a quick and easy way. With the help of SCFM, the injection moulding machine can produce qualified products

This function can not only optimise the minimum wall thickness of products made by injection molding machine of the same clamping force, injection pressure and speed, but also effectively eliminate the internal stress of the product and reduce the required injection speed and the maximum injection pressure.

Solutions

FF series electric injection moulding machine, one of the YIZUMI’s leading machines, has long been devoted to breaking the technical bottleneck in smart injection moulding systems, to continuously meet customers' new demand for smart machines and intelligent injection moulding systems. This year, YIZUMI brought the FF series electric injection molding machine equipped with a number of smart functions to the CHINAPLAS, presenting the smart machine charm. The myth that all Permanent Lifting Magnets are the same…Busted! As safety first, followed by convenience second are the reasons producers buy Lifting Magnets, it stands to reason that the best buy, even if not the cheapest, will be the one that offers maximum safety, efficiency and easy but secure operation.

This is why MaxX Permanent Magnets from Mag-Autoblok-Tecnomagnete have found so much favour the world over. MaxX Lifters use a patented feature (called neutral-crown technology) that

concentrates the magnetic flux at the lifting face where it is needed. Most other styles employ a magnetic circuit that permits magnetic field leakage from the rear of the magnet into the hook and chain apparatus to which it may be connected, reducing efficiency. MaxX Lifters are available in a range of rated lifting capacities (which include the AS4991-2004 three-to-one safety margin) from 125 to 2000 kg with several special models for lifting thin steel. Australia's Ambassador Visits Ssi Schaefer / Cooperation in the Field of Dual Vocational Training With the aim of bringing companies from both countries closer together and promoting productive exchange, Australia's Ambassador Philip Green visited intralogistics expert SSI Schaefer at its international headquarters in Neunkirchen/Siegerland, Germany, last Thursday. Ambassador Philip Green was invited by Volkmar Klein, Member of Deutscher Bundestag (MdB) and both were impressed by the innovative strength and traditional values of SSI Schaefer, a familyowned company. As a global, leading solution provider of modular warehousing and logistics systems, SSI Schaefer has been active in the Asia-Pacific region and especially in the Australian market for decades and has provided a wide variety of companies from many industries with individual warehousing systems and highly automated solutions. The region's high growth rates and the ongoing e-commerce boom, which has continued during the Corona pandemic, are leading to steadily increasing demand in Australia for high-performance logistics solutions and well-trained specialists to implement, operate and maintain the warehouse systems. Against this background, the increasing shortage of skilled workers was also discussed. Ambassador Philip Green is particularly interested in Germany’s dual

vocational training model. He would like to adapt this stronger practical orientation for the Australian market. Steffen Bersch, CEO, and Bruno Krauss, CFO of the SSI Schaefer Group, welcomed the joint exchange and opportunities for cooperation, as SSI Schaefer is always looking to increase their skilled workforce in Australia due to the strong demand. Investigating the concept of a trial

run of dual training at SSI Schaefer in Australia as a possible option for fulfilling the future requirements for skilled workers was discussed. As Chairman of the German-Pacific Parliamentary Group in the Deutscher Bundestag, Volkmar Klein is promoting even more intensive cooperation. "Australia can be an important market for German companies. SSI Schaefer's experience shows how

much potential there is in the region. It is an important sign that SSI Schaefer wants to intensify its own activities locally." CEO Steffen Bersch commented, "We will also continue to expand our international business in the Asia-Pacific region and are looking forward to a close and long-term cooperation with the Australian Embassy to promote dual training and beyond."

Research Collaboration to Strengthen Welding Wire Composition In a $600,000 research partnership between AML3D Limited and Deakin University, supported through the Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (IMCRC), experts are developing high strength aluminium – scandium welding wire for Wire Additive Manufacturing (WAM®) applications.

aluminium-scandium compositions for a range of industry use cases. The success of the trials will enable many new applications for its WAM® technology, with the automotive, resources (mining, oil & gas) and broader transport industries (such as shipbuilding) showing strong interest in high strength aluminium products.

AML3D, a pioneer in commercialising Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), has teamed up with the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at Deakin University, to investigate the effect of scandium as a strengthening element for existing aluminium wire feedstock for 3D printing and welding applications, with the potential to commercialise. As part of the 12-month research collaboration, IFM researchers will create and roadtest new alloy compositions that will deliver high strength, corrosion resistant WAAM structures, using AML3D’s WAM® technology.

AML3D Managing Director Mr Andrew Sales, encouraged by the success of the initial industry scale welding trials, describes the research progress as promising.

AML3D is currently trialling various

“The uniqueness of our WAM® technology lies in its ability to 3D print large metallic structures. The welding wire compositions created through this research project will enable us and our customers to manufacture components with stronger and better mechanical properties. This will help us to position high strength Aluminium products produced by WAM® as a viable alternative to existing manufacturing and repair processes, opening up new

business opportunities – locally and internationally,” says Sales. With the potential of generating new Australian owned intellectual property, the project also provides AML3D with new revenue prospects not only through high strength Aluminium WAM® parts but also wire feedstock sales for 3D printing and welding applications. Australia is one of the largest producers of aluminium, and with scandium being declared a critical commodity for Australia, the US

and Europe, Dr Matthew Young, Manufacturing Innovation Manager at IMCRC, sees the collaboration also as a significant opportunity to value add to Australian resources. “The project is a great example of creating new, higher value products using Australian resources. By enhancing the properties of aluminium by adding scandium, and thus its value, the research demonstrates that Australia is capable of manufacturing and delivering high-quality products,” says Dr Young.

Byron Skincare Manufacturer are all Aglow over Funding Australian skincare and holistic wellbeing company Synthesis Organics has today announced that it has secured $460,000 in funding as part of the NSW Government’s Regional Job Creation Fund to help accelerate its growth, create local jobs and support regional producers. The funds will be used to establish a new multi-purpose company headquarters that will include a state-ofthe-art lab, extraction and manufacture of essential oils, distribution, training, administration, and workshop facilities. The new premises will hold certification from Australian Certified Organic, Therapeutic Goods Administration and be Good Manufacturing Practice approved. Synthesis Organics creates skincare and aromatherapy products using only the highest quality, ethically sourced

Australian Certified Organic ingredients, clinically-proven bioactives, bioenergetic aromatherapy and energy balancing to empower radiant conscious beauty and natural healing. Member for Ballina, Tamara Smith MP, said that the development is expected to create 23 full-time jobs within the next three years as the company scales its manufacturing capacity to meet growing domestic and international demand for its products. “The new facility will benefit local growers and suppliers by boosting production, and the training and workshop rooms will support a significant number of new jobs, traineeships and apprenticeships for local youth, all while establishing a presence for an internationally renowned skincare brand right here in Byron Shire,” MP Smith said.

The HQ will not only service Synthesis Organics; it will also be a contract manufacturing and development hub for small scale businesses and start-ups who require ACO1, TGA2 and GMP3 approved facilities for small batch product development, from testing bespoke formulations right through to ongoing production contracts. Founder of Synthesis Organics, Theme Rains, says that by offering boutique, small-batch contract manufacturing opportunities, it will empower the local community of Northern NSW producers to continue

developing world-class organic products. “We are overjoyed to be able to help advance other passionate businesses through sharing these facilities. We believe in a community-over-competition mindset by supporting what others would call our direct competitors, because of the positive implications of consumers having access to a diverse range of high quality organic, sustainably sourced and ethically made products,” said Theme. Development of the HQ will begin in January, with an expected opening in June 2022.

Organised by the US Government research agency DARPA and spanning a three-year-period, the Subterranean Challenge was designed to push the boundaries of autonomous robotic technology. Scientists were tasked with remotely running the robots in an underground environment that simulated a real-world scenario. This included locating models representing lost or injured humans, backpacks, or phones, as well as variable conditions such as pockets of gas. Made up of members from CSIRO’s Data61, CSIRO spin-out robotics company Emesent, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, the team competed under the name ‘CSIRO’s Data61’ and won the preliminary round before being awarded second in the final circuit. Leader of team CSIRO’s Data61 and CSIRO’s Robotics group leader, Dr Navinda Kottege said: “This is an amazing result! We are the first Australian team to place in the top two at a DARPA robotics challenge. “This cements CSIRO’s place as a

How Video Surveillance Can Support the Food Sector Food manufacturers continue to combat daily challenges due to the ongoing global pandemic. By March 2020, the Department of Homeland Security identified food and agriculture production as one of 16 critical infrastructure sectors. In a very short time, food manufacturers had to accommodate new safety requirements, while taking care of their staff and maintaining high standards at their facilities. Whereas most sectors continue to expand their remote capabilities and shift away from office buildings, food manufacturers have to deal with the pandemic in the physical world. Security technology such as video surveillance, alarm systems and access control optimize manufacturing plants’ safety and productivity.

unforeseen damages to the brand and impact on sales. Video surveillance is a practical tool that food manufacturers use to enhance their security posture, monitor production, and manufacturing. 2. Enforce health and safety in the age of COVID. In response to the pandemic, many food manufacturers have taken proactive steps at their plants to meet new guidelines. Video surveillance supports these efforts by providing management with a tool that enables them to monitor and ensure that each location is consistently following procedures.

These features enable manufacturers to: •

Maintain a high level of safety and security awareness

Supervise plant activities and make decisions in real-time

1. Support business operations

The average cost of a recall to a food company is $10M which does not include

Enhance security, production visibility, and quality control

3. Document important activities

Here are 3 benefits of video surveillance in food manufacturing:

Even before the pandemic, managing regulatory compliance and documenting essential activities have always been a challenge for manufacturers due to the complexity of the sector. Food recalls, extended supply chains and the constant threat of disease outbreaks are enough to keep most up at night. Video surveillance has helped with everything from making sure that only authorised personnel had access to the plant to ensuring that frozen assets were secured. Integrated security solutions that combine video surveillance, access control, and remote capabilities enable organizations to:

Document essential operational activities.

Audit practices and save specific video clips of infractions for training purposes.

Ensure compliance and guidelines are being followed.

Looking Ahead Moving forward, business owners can use these principles to improve their facility’s security posture. Video surveillance will continue to help facilities adapt to this new safety-first environment.

Welding Cell with a Built-In Cobot

Leussink, the exclusive Australian distributor of Demmeler 3D Welding table solutions, has expanded its range with the new Demmeler WeldSpace system, a fully equipped welding cell with a built-in welding cobot.

The cobot can be moved by hand to the place where welding is to be started and stopped. Intermediate waypoints and sections are also programmed. This allows the operator to create professional welding programs with the touch of a button.

Leussink’s Managing Director Jason Leussink says the new Demmeler WeldSpace system is ideal for small and medium-sized companies with moderate production volumes.

The Demmeler WeldSpace cell has two large and easily accessible working areas – Space A and Space B with a length of approximately 2,400 mm in the standard version and requires little floor space. It even has indentations for the forklift forks. The enclosure opens on both sides (roll-up doors) and automatically moves from the front to the rear work area.

“Like other cobot (collaborative robot) systems, the WeldSpace can significantly increase productivity levels. The cobot works alongside humans, taking on dull, repetitive tasks, reducing human error, and allowing humans to be more productive. The intuitive user interface of the Demmeler WeldSpace programming and operating concept (DWSP) for operating the cobots makes it straightforward for employees without programming knowledge to easily learn to control the robot.

Virtually Indestructible UHMWPE Outrigger Pads Answer Safety Challenges on Diverse, Remote, Hazardous and Emergency Sites Virtually unbreakable outrigger pads that can withstand rated loads of more than 50 tonnes per point on a solid foundation are engineered by Cut To Size Plastics for high stability jobs involving construction, resources infrastructure, exploration, mobile worksite equipment and emergency use. The light, easily handled and pads – weighing as little as 14-21kg for point loads of 40-70 tonnes depending on foundation – are custom-fabricated from the proven Wearex™ UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) family in particular shapes required for diverse ground conditions. The strength of UHMWPE comes from its long polymer chains and high molecular weight, which give it some of the greatest impact strength of any thermoplastic that’s currently being manufactured, says Laurie Green, Managing Director of Cut To Size Plastics. “UHMWPE outrigger pads can flex slightly on rough terrain, which protects them from breaking when under stress. Less safe materials such as wood are susceptible to breaking and splintering, and they also expand and warp due to moisture absorption, which weakens the pads. UHMWPE is far longer lasting. Instead of replacing outrigger pads regularly, users get longer and safer lives out of this ultra-tough, ultra-dependable pads in diverse and critical applications,” says Mr Green, who has more than 40 years’ experience in specifying the best

engineering plastics for particular jobs. These include materials for conditions encountered by truck cranes, rigger cranes, mobile cranes, auxiliary cranes, mobile concrete pumps, manlifts, access equipment, mobile drill rigs, 4wd service vehicles and by machinery used for agribusiness, oil and gas, mining, pipelining, civil engineering and similar applications. The Wearex family is particularly suitable for operations where safety and ergonomics are a major concern, including the transport, lifting and placement of pads and their ability to withstand extreme loads without permanent deformation. Compared with steel plates, they offer very high recovery during deformation – making them ready to use for a much longer period. Because they are virtually indestructible, they are also highly costefficient, says Cut To Size Plastics. Cut To Size designs and manufactures components for applications across Australasia from its Head Office in Sydney, where facilities include CNC machining facilities coupled with GibbsCAM™ and Solidworks™ software. “The low weight of cast Wearex material float pads makes them easier to handle during use and assembly. Ergonomic machined or rope handles can be integrated in pad design. They are easily transportable in 4wd, diesel trucks and machinery, for example, such as those used across mining, infrastructure, construction and energy sites

Wearex pads are exceptionally suitable for remote and emergency use, because they are light and strong, as well as easy to transport by land, air and workboat

across diverse and often remote worksites. Wearex’s material elasticity makes them sturdy and secure even if there are smaller bumps and edges to contend with. The Wearex family can be completely recycled and is resistant against fuels, lubricants and chemicals and suitable for use in high ambient temperature (max. 90ºC) and high moisture applications. Cut To Size’s experience with Wearex extends over a huge range of environments for which it is suitable, ranging from marine facilities such as ports and oil and gas exploration, through to outback mining and civil engineering and on-site maintenance facilities where fuels and common chemicals are an issue,” says Cut To Size.

Emergency use

Wearex pads are exceptionally suitable for emergency and remote use, because they are easy to transport, even by air, and can be placed promptly and precisely to give a sure footing, and to prevent sinking into softer ground, says the company, which has more than 40 years’ experience in the application of engineering plastics. Wearex can also be used to fabricate portable roads to provide access on unpaved services and to protect sensitive environments such as parklands, grasslands, recreation facilities and damage-prone areas on construction sites where vehicle and machinery access is required. Mechanical properties of typical Wearex outrigger pads include: • Shore D hardness 15s – Value (Skala D unit, DIN53505 test method) 64-68 • Ultimate tensile strength (N/mm2, DIN53455) 30 • Modulus of elasticity (N/mm2 DIN 53457) 900 • Application temperature (Min and constant deg C) -200/+80 • Dimensional stability under heat (Deg C DIN53461) 47 • Moisture absorption (%) < 0.01 Pads may be custom-manufactured from members of the Wearex family to achieve required performance characteristics.

Cut To Size’s easily handled outrigger pads. The tough, light pads are suitable for both harsh and remote site conditions

CASE STUDY - QAD

The Manufacturing Moral of the “Three Little Pigs” Glenn Graney, QAD’s Marketing Manager for the Industrial and High-Tech markets, adapts one of our favourite fairy tales… There is a well-known fable about three little pigs that go off into the world to find their way. They encounter a wolf that is able to disrupt their worlds with a huff and a puff. Revisiting the traditional “Three Little Pigs” provides insights into the challenges of dated approaches for manufacturing systems. If you think you know how the story ends, then you are underestimating the wolf in competition clothing.

The “Three Little Manufacturing Pigs”

Three little manufacturing pigs make their way out into the manufacturing world. Each has their own respective skill set and positions himself against competition and challenges. The first pig chooses to make his factory out of STRAW (Systems That Really Are Worrisome). In manufacturing terms, he is very dependent on manual systems and lots of paper. This certainly makes him vulnerable to the competition and doesn’t take much for a huff and a puff to send him scrambling. The first little pig scrambles over to his sibling’s factory for protection. The second pig is a bit savvier and chooses to make his factory out of STICKS (Systems That Intend to Connect Knowledge via Spreadsheets). In manufacturing terms, this is a more automated approach made of systems that are loosely bound together. This pig plugs the holes between his “sticks” with Excel spreadsheets and customizations. This approach still makes him vulnerable to the competition. The wolf has to huff and puff just a little harder, but he really doesn’t have a problem sending these pigs scrambling again. The two displaced pigs scramble to their last sibling who has chosen to make his factory and associated systems out of BRICKS (Big, Rigid, Inflexible Capability without Knowledge Sharing). Traditionally, this pig is seen to be the smartest of the family. He has created an infrastructure that feels solid and robust. But it’s a funny thing about bricks. Bricks are heavy. Bricks are inflexible. Bricks and customized software systems are not easily maintained and modified. Our third little pig struggles to expand, modify and react to unexpected challenges. In some ways, the choices that he made about building a centric approach have resulted in rigidity. The competition inevitably catches up to our three little manufacturing pigs. The swine crew scrambles into the brick factory and their well-established systems

OCTOBER 2021

of support. The moral of the traditional fable tells us that through hard work and selection of a robust solution, the third pig has positioned himself to resist the competition. In the fable the wolf is not able to huff and puff the bricks away and the story ends badly for the wolf. The pigs feel secure that they are finally safe from huffing and puffing, but there are flaws in this view.

The Modern Digital Age Wolf

The traditional view assumes that the wolf has a predictable strategy. It completely discounts that the wolf is evolving as quickly, if not more quickly, as the pigs. But this is not your grandmother’s wolf, Little Red Riding Hood! Wolves actually travel in packs. A clever pack mate utilises a giant industrial fan that goes well beyond huffing and puffing. Even if the bricks withstand the increased velocity, it is a mistake to assume that the competition is reliant on wind alone. The digital age wolf does not care much for huffing and puffing. He has switched to advanced technology and digital

transformation which makes him mobile with a whole new level of fierce. This wolf is most likely already hacking your systems, breaching your security and opening the doors to your brick factory with an app. The rest of the pack delivers disruptive alternative business models that do not align with the centralized view of a brick foundation. The wolf’s virtual approach to the marketplace actually reveals that the heavy, single on-premise solution that was once endeared as an advantage is now a liability. How do pigs stuck in a brickand-mortar approach reconcile their ability to compete? Are our pig friends doomed to end up as bacon on the wolves’ burgers? Ultimately, our three manufacturing pigs can evolve as well. That evolution means surrendering the limits of papers, the siren song of spreadsheets and the “big bang brickness” of traditional systems. The secret is in becoming the adaptive manufacturing enterprise. Our swine team needs to think outside the brick box. The moral for our pigs is that modern challenges require replacing bricks with nimbleness.

What is Adaptive Manufacturing? Adaptive Manufacturing incorporates the integration of data, from supplier to customer, with realtime analytics and visibility across the supply chain ecosystem. By utilizing business insights from across the enterprise, adaptive manufacturers can rapidly respond to business and market changes. Cloud-based systems provide the flexibility and virtual expandability that is necessary for modern infrastructure. The modular systems and applications are pre-designed for change and evolving challenges. IT and the associated systems can be a strategic competitive tool rather than an aging barrier to progress.

ALP Plans to give These Chips aren’t Down Manufacturing a Leg Up

Anthony Albanese, leader of the opposition, has announced his intention to launch a “buy Australian” pledge ahead of the coming election.

“This will be done by packaging tenders where appropriate into multiple packages that allow smaller companies to bid for them.

Popular snack foods; Kettle Chips, Thins, Cheezels and CC’s could soon be manufactured in a new premises in the Western suburbs.

According to a report in The Guardian, Mr Albanese plans to boost Australia’s manufacturing industry by initiating a government-led “Buy Australian Act”.

“We will work with states and territories to ensure that the $20bn provided annually through national partnership agreements is consistent with a national agreement on a future made in Australia,” the speech extract says.

A $222 million development proposal could see the Snack Brands Australia warehouse and distribution centre on Distribution Drive in Orchard Hills expanded to include food manufacturing on site.

“Labor will establish a ‘future made-inAustralia’ office within the Department of Finance to drive a whole-of-government approach,” he will tell the NSW conference, in a speech extract released under embargo. “Labor will provide opportunities for mid- and small-tier Australian companies to participate in the infrastructure pipeline helping to build and strengthen our sovereign capability.

“Together these plans will ensure that Australia’s capacity to manufacture essential goods in areas including health, energy, infrastructure, defence and space and communications is increased and that we are more resilient.” The plan would result in government departments putting an emphasis on Australian-made products as part of any purchasing process.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said this development would see some of the most popular chip brands manufactured in Western Sydney. “If approved, the Snack Brands Australia site will be a 24/7 operation and feature a new food manufacturing facility, an office, a wastewater treatment plant and create 497 construction jobs,” Mrs Davies said.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes agreed that the proposal would bring employment opportunities and investment to Western Sydney. “Chips may be cheap, however this proposal is anything but and represents a major opportunity for Western Sydney,” Mr Stokes said. “The pandemic has shown that many of Sydney’s construction workers live in the south-west, so it’s important that we have as many jobs close to homes as possible.” Members of the public are invited to have their say on the project’s Environmental Impact Statement by Wednesday 13 October 2021. ABB Helps Make Fashion Industry More Sustainable with Innovative Technology ABB will deliver automation, electrification, quality control systems, motors and drives for Renewcell’s new industrial textile recycling production line in Sundsvall, Sweden. Renewcell is a fast-growing Swedish sustaintech company specialising in textile-to-textile recycling. With ABB technology, a former SCA paper mill will be transformed into the world’s first commercialscale recycling plant for cellulosic textiles – created by dissolving natural materials such as cellulose which is then regenerated to create a wide range of fabrics. Renewcell is already working with several fashion manufacturers, and in 2020, the company and H&M Group entered a multi-year partnership to replace virgin fibres with recycled textiles in clothing. The contract between ABB and Renewcell marks an important milestone for the fashion industry. According to Renewcell’s preliminary calculations, textile fibres made from its recycled raw material use approximately 50 litres of fresh water per kg in production, compared to around 1,600 litres for cotton and 90 litres for non-cotton cellulosic material viscose. With a maximum production capacity of 60,000 tons per year Renewcell’s innovative approach could help to preserve around 90 billion litres of fresh water, the equivalent of 36,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The process also lowers waste, plastic pollution and both CO₂ and chemical emissions.

“We at ABB believe that electrification and automation technologies can play a key role in transforming industries and reducing their environmental footprint,” said Theodor Swedjemark, ABB’s Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer. “We are honoured to support Renewcell in their exciting journey towards increased circularity of the fashion industry – an ambition that is fully aligned with our own efforts to systematically improve circularity across ABB’s supply chain as part of our 2030 sustainability strategy.” Joachim Braun, Division President, Process Industries, ABB said: “This contract allows us to apply our deep pulp and paper expertise and project experience to help Renewcell reduce its emissions and preserve resources, and ultimately change fashion for the better.” The process for clothing recycling is similar to pulp drying, breaking down cellulose in cotton and viscose textiles to recycle into new raw materials. This similarity enables Renewcell to use the existing infrastructure, including buildings and the supply and processing of raw water, waste water, compressed air and electricity at the SCA mill. This will be coupled with ABB’s paper and automation expertise, to manufacture recycled textiles that might otherwise have gone to landfill or incineration.

MRT - Importer and Supplier of Conveyor Components and their Bespoke Service Adept Conveyor Technologies’ little sister steps into the limelight MRT Australia have been supplying components to some of the country’s leading businesses for over a decade and have a strong reputation for raising the bar in terms of quality and ROI. The company brings to market a comprehensive range of high-quality conveyor components that are compatible with the vast majority of existing conveyor systems and at competitive prices. “We are a little bit unique in our market when compared with other companies also selling conveyor components,” says Paul Johnson, co-founder of MRT. “There are a number of suppliers, simply in the conveyor roller area that are happy to make and supply rollers for use in machinery or conveyors, but MRT has taken a further step in breaking down those roller products into the simpler elements that are used in roller manufacture. “So, the potential purchaser can source components from us and make their own rollers – should they wish to do so. We also offer a procurement service for a lot of customers that have purchased machinery out of Europe and cannot get parts locally - that situation arises often.” Although founded by Adept Conveyor Technologies, there is no cross-ownership of the two companies, and they operate independently. “Unlike Adept, MRT does not build conveyors and certainly

doesn’t do integrated systems. It is purely an importer and supplier of components,” Paul clarifies. “It was targeted at people and companies that may wish to build their own conveyors or machines and, also, the maintenance engineers that need replacement parts. “MRT is free to seek out customers that may not be customers of Adept and has been recognised as being a supplier of not only the highest quality range in the market, but also prides itself in being a provider of advice to customers when making or seeking product

to suit their needs. “The quality is our point of difference, and the price is our advantage. As we are co-founders and part owners of the company, there is no middle-man so we can offer benchmark quality at everyday prices.” MRT Australia (02) 9771 1748 mrtaustralia.com.au

Beamex Introduces a Better Way for Workshop Calibration Beamex introduces a better way to perform calibrations in a workshop by introducing a new calibration test bench called Beamex CENTRiCAL. “The new Beamex CENTRiCAL calibration bench reflects the result of decades of experience providing workshop calibration solutions to the industrial process industry,” describes Beamex Sales Director Juha Salimäki. “A standard yet configurable solution, the Beamex CENTRiCAL represents the latest technology which combines ease of use, versatility, ergonomics and provides a better way to perform calibrations in a workshop,” he continues. The new Beamex CENTRiCAL is easy to configure to suit individual requirements while the standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection offers electrical safety measures as a standard. Each CENTRiCAL is supplied with accredited calibration certificates to ensure quality and traceability. The Beamex CENTRiCAL is available with superb ergonomics via motorized height control, or as a fixed height bench. A straight bench as well as corner modules are available to meet user needs. A trolley-

based design is also available for mobile solutions.

Why calibrate in a workshop?

Even though process instruments are often calibrated in the field with portable calibration equipment, there are situations when it is more effective and convenient to perform calibrations in a workshop. For example, during a commissioning phase, it is easier and faster to calibrate the process instruments in a workshop, before installing them into the process. It is also

more efficient to calibrate spare devices and rotational spares in a workshop. Better accuracy can also be achieved when the calibration is performed in controlled conditions, using dedicated high-accuracy workshop calibration equipment. In the event of harsh or even dangerous field conditions, calibration in a well-designed workshop with equipment ready for use is ergonomic and practical. Workshop calibration can also compliment field calibration.

Automated and paperless calibration

“Combining the Beamex CENTRiCAL together with software, hardware and calibration expertise form an automated and paperless digital calibration solution. This solution can cut the time spent on calibration by up to 50%. It saves money while at the same time improves the reliability of calibration records,” Mr. Salimäki concludes. Mobile Sanitary Conveyor Bag Dump System A new sanitary mobile Tilt-Down Flexible Screw Conveyor with Integral Bag Dump Station and Compactor allows the transfer of material manually dumped from handheld bags into elevated process equipment, and the disposal of empty bags, dust-free. Mounted on a mobile frame with locking castors and a fold-down step, the Bag Dump Station is secured to the floor hopper with quick-release clamps, and features a gasketted bag disposal chute through the side wall of the hopper hood, allowing the operator to pass empty bags directly into the bag compactor. Dust generated from both dumping and compaction is drawn onto the system's two cartridge filters. An automatic reverse-pulse filter cleaning system releases short blasts of compressed air inside the filters at timed intervals. This causes any dust built up on the outer surfaces to fall into the hopper, conserving useable product. Filters

are readily accessed by removing the interior baffle, and replaced using quickdisconnect fittings. The compactor employs a pneumatic air cylinder to compress 50 to 80 empty bags into a removable bin lined with a plastic waste bag for dust-free tie-off and disposal. The main door, and a flapper door within the bag infeed chute, are equipped with safety interlocks that prevent operation of the compactor unless both doors are closed. The hopper discharges into an enclosed, 4.6 m flexible screw conveyor that handles a broad range of materials including free- and non-free-flowing bulk solids ranging from large pellets to sub-micron powders, including products that pack, cake, seize, smear, fluidise, or crumble, with no separation of blended products. The flexible screw is the only moving part contacting material, and is driven by an electric motor beyond the point at which material is discharged,

preventing material contact with seals. The Bag Dump Station, support boom and conveyor assembly can be tilted down to manoeuvre through standard doorways and aisles, and around corners for use anywhere in the plant. The entire unit can be rolled to a cleaning station where a lower cleanout cap on the conveyor tube can be removed to flush the smooth interior surfaces with steam, water or cleaning solutions, or to fully remove the flexible screw for cleaning and inspection.

The system is available in carbon steel with durable industrial coating, with stainless steel material contact surfaces, or in all-stainless steel (shown) finished to industrial, food, dairy or pharmaceutical standards.

A Tribute to the Late Adrian Smith of PCA It is with great respect and sorrow that we pay tribute to Adrian Smith, the founder of Plant Control and Automation Pty Ltd (PCA), who sadly passed away earlier this year after a long illness overcame him at the age of 76. Here, Jill Jenkins, who more than ably assisted Adrian with her financial, product knowledge and technical skills for over 35 years, shares some of her memories of this great man. Adrian Smith, well known in the industrial electronics sector for his innovation in manufacturing automation, at a time when manufacturers' packaging lines consisted of a number of simple mechanical aids and a lot of manual handling, was one of the first in the industry to gain a vision for 100% electronic controls long before the PLCs were invented. At this time Phillips had developed Norbit Logic – a new

expert advice and information to customers who came with a need where he nearly always had a solution. Adrian built his business over the years with great customer service and reliable professional advice. He believed that a large proportion of industrial breakdown

In 1968, Adrian was the founder of PCA which was the first company in Australia to build completely electronic control systems. These control systems included all the input devices. There were no mechanical limit switches or control relays in those days, so PCA used all proximity and photo electric input transducers. In looking at the installation manuals for the equipment, we found they were manufactured in the 1970s. PCA was responsible for the complete design and installation of the electrical side of all the equipment that was a revolutionary innovation for food and beverage, mining and engineering manufacturers. Adrian led manufacturers in Australia into the electronic controls age. He had a deep working knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering. This enabled him to provide innovative

time could be avoided with the implementation of the, then, very new solid state electronic technology. After several years’ experience in the industrial engineering field, Adrian

Adrian Smith

commenced business at Whiting Street, Artarmon. After a few years, the premises at Artarmon was outgrown as the control cabinets became bigger. PCA then moved to a new factory in Hornsby Street, Hornsby.

Where did Adrian’s vision begin? It all started with him building his first crystal set in Smithton Tasmania in 1958. From the very beginning, Adrian learned to overcome technical difficulties as Smithton had no radio reception. So, he took a trip to Burnie, Tasmania. This was the first of many successful projects that increased in complexity over the years. In 1960 Adrian commenced his apprenticeship in Devonport later transferring and completing his apprenticeship with Eldridge Electric in Hobart. He continued with Eldridge Electric working on a number of domestic and industrial installations. This is where his industrial experience began. Adrian started out designing and drawing the circuits for the electrical control systems. These were used for controlling palletising and depalletising installations. Companies such as Tooheys, Coca-Cola, Carlton United, Cascade Brewery, Unilever,

Colgate, ACI Glass, Carnation Milk, Rosella, Cottee’s and Edgel were among the first companies to have such equipment in Australia. During this time Adrian also designed and manufactured photo electric cells that sensed the liquid levels in glass containers. PCA’s initial equipment was before the advent of Programmable Logic Controllers (or PLCs), which were industrial digital computers. When PLCs took over, Adrian went overseas to trade shows to find the latest electronic sensors that would be used in controlling industrial processes. Because of the costs of manufacturing components in Australia, he started importing them from overseas. This included shaft encoders which became

a major product line for PCA. He made encoders in Australia, but what he could not manufacture he imported from the three major manufacturing companies in the world. More recently, when constructing the NorthConnex tunnel the contractors had some difficulties operating the large drilling machines. PCA was approached and came to the rescue. In 2019 Adrian realised that he needed to retire due to health reasons, so he went looking for someone to buy the business. ADM Systems Pty Ltd. purchased the business and the same products and services are available with offices around Australia today. Perfection in everything, supplying the best possible product to the customer, doing the job, being honest

about limitations and giving the best advice he knew to deliver the best possible outcome were Adrian’s greatest professional qualities and achievements. Adrian, an innovative, generous, and dedicated man, owned and managed PCA for 50 years - a major achievement for any businessperson. Scott Filby, publisher at Industry

Update, was honoured to be one of the attendees at Adrian’s funeral in Wahroonga earlier in the year. Today, we salute Adrian Smith for his foresight, engineering excellence, and strong focus on service, which has ensured PCA’s ongoing success during its 53 years of trading. May he rest in peace.

Prioritising Communication in a Challenging Customer-Facing Environment Chasing an unpaid account during a global pandemic? Awkward! Thankfully, Innovate Learn came to the rescue Being on the front line in a customer service role can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging, especially for those who are in the unenviable position of having to call customers and ask them to settle their overdue accounts. In most cases, a customer will only come into contact with an Accounts Receivable team member if they have an overdue debt on their account. Ideally, these account disputes are resolved upfront by a customer service representative, and Accounts Receivable only step in if the first attempt at resolution has failed. This can mean that by the time the Accounts Receivable team member calls the customer, the customer is already feeling some discomfort and tension. This was the dilemma faced by Jaime Smith, National Credit Manager at REMONDIS Australia, which is part of one of the world's largest recycling and water suppliers. Jaime oversees an Accounts Receivable team that is tasked with collecting outstanding debts from existing customers. Being on the front-line, they encounter many negative customer conditions - a challenge that has only been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ongoing lockdown restrictions have created service interruptions outside of REMONDIS Australia’s control, and some customers felt that they were being contacted and asked to pay for services they had not received due to these interruptions. When a company is faced with lockdown, waste removal can be the last thing on its mind. However, REMONDIS Australia runs an automated service and unless the customer notifies them that collections are not required, the collections go ahead regardless. Waste removal is one of the essential services that continues during lockdowns. “During the pandemic, emotions run high, and understandably so. There are many variables that need to be considered. Situations arise that we have never previously encountered” says Jaime. The stressful situation caused by a lockdown can be compounded by another hurdle - the culturally diverse nature of the REMONDIS Australia team. Customers sometimes incorrectly assume that their calls are being answered by an offshore call centre and the team member they were talking to is removed from the situation and therefore unable to provide any real details or assistance.

48

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

Finding a balance between customer satisfaction and business outcomes

Jaime and the REMONDIS Australia leadership team recognised that the challenges the team faced lay in miscommunication. To resolve this, they enlisted the help of Innovate Learn, a Melbourne-based training company that specialises in sales and service effectiveness. “We immediately understood that good communication was a huge priority for the REMONDIS Australia team; 70% of their day was spent on the phone, communicating with customers” says Hazel Stewart, Managing Director of Innovate Learn. “We customised a training solution that addressed the difficult balance of moving customers from irate or insistent behaviour to a place where they were open to discussing how they could settle an overdue account”. Innovate Learn’s initial objective was to address the communication challenges between the diverse staff and upset or angry customers. Jaime had observed that when customers raised questions about the accent and location of a staff member, employees would be reluctant to push back. Instead, they tended to limit the time they spent on customer calls out of concern that customers would claim they could not understand what the service provider was trying to say, due to their cultural background. Hazel explains that the training

sessions focused on firstly providing skills and concepts that helped with selfmanagement, so the Accounts Receivable team felt more confident when engaging with difficult customers. They also learned critical skills so they could reach a mutually agreeable outcome with the customer and keep the communication on-topic. “The REMONDIS Australia team learned the importance of using a consistent framework for every customer call. This included stating the purpose of the call, explaining what will be covered on the call and how the call could benefit both the customer and REMONDIS Australia.” The training sessions also incorporated social style profiling so the REMONDIS Australia team could determine their own social style and understand how they interacted with others. This gave them insights into their own preferences and behaviours. “They were then able to identify the social style of their customers and temporarily modify their own behaviour to reduce tension, move more fluidly through the call and achieve outcomes that are satisfactory to all parties” adds Hazel.

Building communication capability and selfconfidence

“The difference that these training sessions have had on our team at REMONDIS Australia is palpable,” says Jaime. “The training was also provided to the wider customer service team, so it’s really impacted the way that our entire customer-facing division communicates.”

“Social styles have helped us to understand the ways in which different people communicate, and why they might react the way they do. This has also been beneficial for our customers, as those who had been somewhat aggressive are now more receptive and in less of a hurry to get off the phone.” As the challenges faced by the multicultural staff members at REMONDIS Australia had been a core concern for the company, Jaime has been watching their development closely and is pleased to report positive outcomes. “I could tell when a staff member was struggling with a customer on the phone just by observing their body language and the speed at which they spoke – they are now clearly more confident and relaxed, and they take their time in order to achieve the desired outcome from the call.” Hazel shares that these training solutions and the skills acquired go beyond the professional context. “Being able to communicate and respond to others more effectively can improve every aspect of a person’s life.” “I was thrilled when Jaime told me that the training hadn’t just changed the way her team communicated with customers, but that it had also improved their relationships with colleagues, and their own self-confidence,” she concludes. A Critical Component RS Components, the high-service distributor of electronics, automation and control components, tools and consumables, have just launched their new RS PRO Facilities Maintenance solutions portfolio, which includes an astonishing 1,000 new products. “We are constantly refreshing our range, especially our PRO range which is our own home brand. We’re always looking to increase the breadth and depth of our products. These new products cover over 80 different product families and so it shows how broad we go with some of our categories, and we look for new lines in areas of importance. In the current pandemic that is safety, janitorial products and cable-management areas.” Scott says. The customer-focussed managing director expands: “We have a lot of consumable items – facility maintenance products, we are constantly evolving, we work with our customers closely to look at what their high-dependency items are, and we make sure we have a variety of new products.” “I think from an ethos perspective, we’re all about innovation and our vision is to be the first choice to our customers, our suppliers and our own people. Our focus has been to be a product and solution supplier. We support our customers both from a developer’s point of view to actual builders, assemblers and the maintenance of the products and services. Our approach is omni channel – we promote heavily being an omnichannel business so 65% of our business is digital and we re-enforce that with our people. We provide one-to-one account management to help deliver a certain level of service to our customers.” With a portfolio so large – the company has got over 600,000 products online across 2500 suppliers – it would be impossible to play favourites, but Scott says he is most proud of their home brand. “The reason is we are constantly involved in that to meet our customers’ needs – and the most important thing to me is that we back-up that with quality We provide a three-year warranty on all our RS PRO products, and that’s now over 40,000 product lines. And the RS PRO brand can roughly provide around a 30% saving brand-for-brand, like-for-like so that’s something I’m proud of.” Like many companies worldwide, RS Components haven’t escaped the effects of the pandemic. However, with agility and innovation, two of the company’s core strengths, they continue to thrive. “We’re quite fortunate,” Scott concedes. “On the positive side we had already established a really strong digital

Scott Philbrook, Managing Director at RS Components demonstrates extraordinary innovation and introduces their exciting new portfolio

platform, we have actually expanded our customer base during the pandemic. We haven’t been immune to the challenges though and cost implications of keeping the supply chain going. Our warehouse teams have been under a lot of pressure to make sure we can turn up and operate and deliver the goods to our customers. We’ve been able to mitigate some of the risks on the supply chain and also, we’ve revved up our local inventory holding both at a local level and at our global distribution centre. “We’re really heavily invested in inventory to make sure we have the products when the customers need them. And I think from a customer perspective, what we’re really focussed on is growing our e-solutions for our customers and helping them automate their procurement process.”

“I think the impacts of the pandemic have really fast-tracked how business adopt new technologies, their operations. They’ve had to change ways of working; we’ve seen a considerable rise in automation and robotics into day-to-day operations and obviously there’s going to be new innovations in that space. AI, virtual reality, augmented reality. “Any manufacturing company needs to be ready to be responsive, to safeguard the full value chain. And when I talk about value chain, I’m talking about the full process from raw materials to the actual manufacturing process to delivery to the customer. “We work a lot with our customers with data-led insights. We are heavily data driven, we are involved in the

supply chain and provide insights of what the facilities are spending, we try to create a partnership. “That’s the path most manufacturing companies in Australia are going to go down – developing more strategic partnerships with suppliers, to help de-risk the supply chain and also work together on using that available data to measure operational efficiency. On any facility there is a lot of data available, and I think RS Components can help bring insight to that data and help increase the productivity of manufacturing while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of team members during the process.” RS Components have certainly stood the test of time, the company began back in 1937, and so has weathered many storms. “It was typically an electronics business and I think there’s the perception that we’re an electronics business but anyone who goes onto our website will see we go across a number of different product categories. We have so many different offerings for our customers. “I think it’s critical to be constantly evolving and that is what we’re always doing. Whether it’s investment or capabilities or acquiring more businesses. We’re never sitting still as a business, which is the exciting part of being RS Components.” RS Components Pty Ltd 1300 656 636 https://au.rs-online.com

Bright Future for Beer sales@laserthings.com.au www.LaserThings.com.au

A regional Victorian brewery is stepping up in the craft beer market by expanding its in-house canning operations and upskilling more local workers. Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas today welcomed the addition of a new packaging facility at Bright Brewery, a project supported by the Victorian Government’s $50 million Agriculture Workforce Plan. Bright Brewery has more than 30 full-time staff across its 500-seat taproom and restaurant, along with a separate production facility, making it a top privatesector employer in North East Victoria. The new packaging equipment has enabled the brewery to move away from third-party providers, helping to secure local workers and ensure the business is self-reliant in the competitive artisanal

beer sector. The investment will also help Bright Brewery to meet consumer demand for cans as the rapidly growing package of choice, with a reputation for improved shelf-life for craft beer. Filling over 50 cans per minute, the new linear machine has the added benefit of increased social distancing for workers – improving COVIDSafe compliance. The $50 million Agriculture Workforce Plan is supporting businesses in regional, rural and outer metropolitan areas within key agriculture and food processing industries through job-matching, case management, worker relocation needs, transport and training. It’s part of almost $30 billion invested by the Government in regional and rural Victoria since 2015.

Elesa Digital Position Indicators Meet the Time Challenge for Packaging Machine Manufacturers Machine change-over time in production is a key issue affecting the profitable operation of packaging lines and can often present a critical bottleneck. As a leading supplier to this industry the challenge for Elesa was to greatly reduce the time taken for machine switchovers on packaging lines installed on site at their end users.

An operator can simply choose the appropriate menu, then quickly re-set each spindle to its correct start position and the machine is “good to go”. This saves large amounts of time and greatly reduces the possibility of human error every time the line is changed or recalibrated. Typical customer feedback has been that “The Elesa wireless electronic positioning system enables faster and more reliable machine set up by the use of a wireless connected profile controller, which displays the initial set up values on each of the electronic position indicators.”

Explained Nigel Pritchett MD at Elesa (UK) “machine downtime for our customers and their end-users can become a major problem while they re-set each roller spindle manually. Fortunately, we have a solution readily available in the form of our unique wireless digital electronic positioning system.” “These units are a like-for-like replacement for conventional items and the connected system allows up to 36 position indicators to be re-set all together from a PC link. This saves a great deal of time compared to re-setting each one individually for different packaging configurations.”

Elesa’s RF electronic positioning indicators are unique in the market, enabling wireless communication with a PLC. This results in faster, more efficient machine set-up and associated change over processes. The

Cutting to the Chase CNC specialist NUM has launched a unique 2D drawing tool that simplifies the design and creation of executable G-code files for CNC cutting machines. Known as NUMcad, the new drawing software runs directly from the machine’s operator panel and also under Windows on any standard PC. Its user interface mimics that of many popular CAD packages and is highly intuitive, making it ideal for people with minimal design experience. NUMcad is suitable for both design origination and design modification. Simple drawing tools are provided for functions such as Line, Polyline, Arc 2P and Arc Center-Radius; and they are backed by a suite of editing tools such as Meet Two Lines, Shrink or Extend – and even Insert Micro-joint – which enables users to very easily customise and modify shapes. If a user already has a CAD file and wishes to modify it, NUMcad allows AutoCad DXF files to be imported. And in the event that the user does not have a DXF file but has created the shape on the CNC cutting machine itself, NUMcad also allows this shape to be imported from their customisable parametric shapes library. The NUMcad software package includes a post processor; shapes

or patterns that have been drawn or imported can be automatically converted into an executable G-code file for the CNC cutting machine. Using NUMcad, each segment of a cut can be set to rapid, marking, rough, medium or fine cut qualities, to achieve the user’s desired finish; the properties associated with the cut type are pulled from a Technology Table. Both standard shape and custom fly cutting functionalities are available, and associated functions include the ability to control the cut-side placement (kerf compensation) and tilt angle of the machine’s cutting nozzle. Nesting gives the user the option to create complex paths containing the same pattern. With settings like nesting type, number of pieces, sheet size, and scaling, the user can create a path that is sized and optimised to their liking. The added alignment settings allows the shapes to be rotated and offset for the minimisation and optimisation of uncut space – that could turn into scrap. According to Steven Schilling, General Manager of NUM Corporation, “We serve a large number of customers in the machine cutting industry. NUMcad provides an exceptionally easy way to design or modify G-code files for 2D cutting applications.”

wireless system enables a quicker and more reliable machine set up - achieved by the use of a linked controller, which displays the initial set-up values on each of the electronic position indicators.

This simple flexibility enables the Elesa system to be adapted as a mainstream option on all such machines and ensures it may be retrofitted to existing installations when upgrading a complete facility. Elesa www.elesa.com

Tasmanian Manufacturer Victoria to Open Definium Makes an Advanced Food and Medicine Manufacturing Impact with Coates Research Centre

Technology firm Definium has been contracted by leading national equipment hire company Coates to create, manufacture and deliver 5,000 hi-tech tracking devices. The Victorian Government is funding the design of a new advanced research centre to move digital innovation forward in the state’s medicine and food manufacturing industries. Dubbed the Faster, Smarter Pharma and Food Manufacturing Project and based at the University of Melbourne, the centre will be a place for researchers and student interns to investigate and develop digital and artificial intelligence solutions, such as increasing the speed and volume of medicine production, to support local industries that are competing globally. “This project will drive innovation in some of Victoria’s most valuable industries while also preparing workers with the skills they need now and into

the future,” the Minister for Higher Education, Gayle Tierney stated. “Universities have a vital role in education and research as well as strengthening Victoria – which is why we’re continuing to back them.” The spokesperson for the University of Melbourne Pro V-C, Research Partnerships and Infrastructure, Professor Mark Hargreaves, confirmed the development would create eight research positions and four student internships. “We are delighted the Victorian Government is supporting this project, which will help future-proof the state’s food and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors through world-leading research and training,” Professor Hargreaves said.

“Tasmanian tech innovation continues to make its mark beyond our shores with a new collaboration between leading national equipment hire company Coates and Tasmanian tech firm Definium,” announced Michael Ferguson, Minister for Science and Technology, in a recent statement. “Coates has partnered with Definium for the design, manufacture and supply of some 5,000 hi-tech tracking devices to be deployed across Coates’ fleet of vehicles and equipment right around the country, with up to 7,500 more expected to be commissioned over the next year. “These new devices provide an easy to install tracking and monitoring system that will provide Coates with substantially greater efficiencies in fleet deployment and use.

“Definium has been successful in receiving support under a number of our manufacturing programs over recent years and has been active in working with us to promote Tasmanian tech capability around the nation and world. Over its history, Definium has manufactured tens of thousands of digital devices in Launceston and the collaboration with Coates is another fantastic achievement that has led to even further growth of Definium which is now 18 employees strong. Definium also demonstrates the broad reach that is a hallmark of Tasmanian companies having undertaken projects across Australia as well as in the UK and US. “It reaffirms what we have been saying for many years, that here in Tasmania we do things as well as anywhere in the world and more and more companies around the globe are taking notice,” Mr Ferguson concluded.

Help Available for Victoria’s Border Communities Towns split by interstate borders are used to living as one community so industries and businesses on the border face unique challenges. Therefore, The Victorian Government will deploy a team of locally based ‘Border Brokers’ to support industries and businesses impacted by restrictions on Victoria’s borders with New South Wales and South Australia. The team will include eight brokers who will work in the Hume, Gippsland, Loddon Mallee, Grampians and Barwon South West regions, which have all been affected by restrictions on their

54

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

respective borders. Brokers will be jointly led by Regional Development Victoria and Agriculture Victoria – which already have strong mechanisms in place to support communities and industry. This team will ensure locals have a key contact on the ground to advocate on their behalf and will support businesses and industry groups to address issues and challenges. Border Brokers will work across state and local governments and with chambers of commerce, key agricultural

stakeholders, industry, regional tourism boards and community groups to identify and triage issues. The team will work on solutions to challenges such as access to workforce and help to ensure supply of necessary goods and services to local businesses. The Brokers will also be able to connect locals with the comprehensive support that has been provided by the Victorian Government throughout the pandemic. In addition, Brokers will be included in the membership of the Border Representatives Reference Group which the Government established last

month. The BRRG brings together key stakeholders to identify local impacts and challenges experienced by border communities in response to Victorian/ NSW border restrictions.

MANUFACTURING NEWS ACROSS AUSTRALIA

More Local Manufacturing being Returned to WA The McGowan Labor Government has welcomed Rio Tinto's commitment to use local suppliers to build iron ore railcars for its Pilbara mining operations. Rio Tinto's announcement includes a commitment to the initial purchase of 50 iron ore railcars, followed by an ongoing commitment of 10 ore cars a year for at least the following five years. The announcement reflects the State Government's commitment to boost local manufacturing and secure an ongoing pipeline of Western Australian jobs through its establishment of the Iron Ore Railcar Wagons Manufacturing and Maintenance Action Group. The action group, which Rio Tinto is part of, was tasked with developing a competitive iron ore railcar manufacturing industry in Western Australia. An independent pre-feasibility study, which was commissioned by the McGowan Government, has identified initiatives for the manufacture, refurbishment and maintenance of iron ore railcar wagons. By supplying the iron ore sector with railcar wagons and components, the local steel fabrication industry will support more Western Australian jobs into the future. The McGowan Government is implementing its WA Jobs Plan and has established a $15 million local manufacturing investment fund to help existing businesses retool so that they can

build iron ore wagons and components, delivering on an election commitment. Former Minister for Emergency Services and Corrective Services Francis Logan has been appointed to Chair the WA Government's Iron Ore Railcar Wagons Manufacturing and Maintenance Action Group. Mr Logan's extensive and relevant experience brings to the role a strong commitment to working with industry in continuing to deliver jobs for

Western Australia. The action group will continue the work from the pre-feasibility phase and will guide the development of a full feasibility study on the viability of manufacturing and maintaining iron ore railcar wagons and components in Western Australia.

These initiatives build on the McGowan Government's election commitment to return rail manufacturing to the Midland area, which will result in the manufacturing of 246 METRONET C-series railcars and six cars to replace the existing Australind service.

Keogh Bay People, a registered Aboriginal business, has been re-engaged to deliver the full feasibility report which it is anticipated will be delivered during the first half of 2022.

This is being undertaken at the new METRONET railcar facility in Bellevue, which has been constructed with close to 8,500 tonnes of WA steel and is creating more than 200 long-term jobs.

Northern Territory’s Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund Launches

commercialisation.

The Northern Territory (NT) Government in partnership with the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC) has opened applications to the total $7.5 million Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund (AMEF) as appreciation for local manufacturing rises in the Territory.

Funding will range from $25,000 up to $500,000 (or more based on scale and impact), and must be matched by industry. Projects should include collaboration with a research partner and a minimum of one industry partner.

The Fund delivers on the recommendations from the Territory Economic Reconstruction Report, and will leverage AMGC’s experience in successfully increasing Australia’s manufacturing capability. With a focus on expanding manufacturing in the NT, co-investments will target local projects that seek to: • grow an advanced manufacturing ecosystem and capability in the NT across the Territory’s priority sectors; and • increase investment in advanced manufacturing activity in NT, and secure a greater number of advanced

55

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

manufacturing jobs located in the NT. • commercialise new products and processes, including transitioning a new product or process from pilot/ prototype stage to full commercial

operations; and/or • support early-stage small scale and pilot research projects in advanced manufacturing, allowing them to more quickly move to larger-scale

The launch of the Fund coincides with the latest AMGC research finding that appreciation of local manufacturing in Territory rose the quickest of any Australian region. Comparing data collected in early 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, to today, AMGC has contrasted the awareness and attitudes toward local manufacturing showing that support is higher compared to prepandemic times. Further information regarding the Fund, the application process and grant guidelines are available at https://www.amgc.org.au/ projects/

Forklifts with all the Comfort of your Favourite Chair The new Yale UX 5-7t trucks were designed with the operator in mind Forklift and warehousing solutions specialist, Yale, is expanding its new UX Series with the introduction of its GPD5070 UX6 range of 5-7 tonne forklifts, designed for enhanced safety, comfort, and ergonomics. The new forklifts complement the recently released 4-5 tonne range, and share its quality engineering, making them an ideal solution to meet less frequent usage needs without compromising on performance or dealer service backup. The new 5-7t range features interchangeable parts, minimised wear, and robust components, which combine to deliver simple serviceability and a low total cost of ownership. “These reliable new forklifts are ideally suited to a broad range of applications, including retail, truck and transport fleets, logistics and other loading and unloading tasks,” says Yale Area Business Director, Pacific, Mr Mark Chaffey. “Importantly, these forklifts have the backing of Yale’s global network of authorised dealers, each offering expert local service and rapid response times to minimise downtime,” he said. “While these forklifts have been designed to feature only the essential components, we appreciate that some less frequent applications may require customized or additional features, so the UX Series comes with a range of optional extras that can be seamlessly integrated into the forklift.” Customisations and optional extras include various fork lengths and mast heights, backup alarms, front window with wiper, polycarbonate top screen, rear LED work light and more.

Safety, Comfort and Ergonomics

Yale has designed the new UX Series

5-7t forklifts with the operator in mind. Stand-out features include: • A 3.5” LCD display, providing convenient viewing of the display data when driving and operating. • A spacious footwell, providing comfort and convenience, with control pedals designed for extra foot space, to reduce operator fatigue. • Hand parking brake, which requires low effort to operate the lever, and includes a button to reduce operator fatigue. • Transmission and drive axle, including a heavy duty and robust Powershift transmission with two forward gears and one reverse, plus a durable and long-life drive axle. • Good through-mast visibility, which delivers excellent visibility of the load and operator’s forward view, thereby optimising comfort, safety and productivity. • Small 300mm diameter steering wheel with adjustable steer column, making it easy to manipulate, responsive and with optimum mobility when working in narrow spaces. The ideally positioned steering wheel allows eight degrees of adjustment, to suit a variety of different operators. • Large access area, making service and repairs to the engine compartment easy. • High-strength profiled steel overhead guard, which enhances reliability and operator protection. A large service area enables fast and easy servicing of the new Yale UX Series 5-7t forklifts. “All of these features come as standard in all Yale UX Series 5-7t forklifts, and spare parts management has been simplified, with high levels

of interchangeability of parts between forklifts across the entire UX Series,” says Mr Chaffey. “Yale authorised dealers are backed by the global Hyster-Yale group with a full product line of lift trucks in operation across hundreds of industries worldwide. Local dealers will carry strong supplies of spare parts and will be ready to provide expert service to local industries,” he says. The Yale dealer and service network extends across Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Korea and Taiwan.

The Yale UX Service Difference

What differentiates the Yale UX Series service offering from other offerings on the market today is that these trucks are backed by a network of specially chosen, experienced, independent distributors, professional dealers and service providers who offer a wide range of support services

to their customers. With a keen appreciation for the varying needs of customers, Yale’s network offers peace of mind, delivering fast support whenever it is needed. This support includes rapid response to maintenance requirements, comprehensive parts availability, and comprehensive applications surveys. All these commitments are key to keeping materials handling operations on track and within budget. Offering a solution which reliably meets productivity targets, while keeping operating costs low, the Yale UX range has been designed to be easy to operate and to maintain, delivering a “Simply Efficient” solution to individual user needs. GreaseMax Ensures Plant Operating Efficiency Avoid over-greasing, or use of the wrong grease, and let your machinery perform at its optimum level. Over-greasing bearings leads to higher maintenance and energy costs. Torque, and therefore energy, is needed to keep bearings turning. There is a direct relationship between the energy needed for this and the operating costs of your plant. Bearings that are over greased need more torque, therefore energy, to push the rolling elements through the excess grease. This excess grease is also the cause

58

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

of grease churning which causes higher temperatures, a reduction in grease life and reduced bearing life - so this means higher maintenance costs as well as higher plant operating costs due to the additional energy needed. The base oil viscosity is a critical physical property of a lubricant. Consideration needs to be given to speed, load, temperature and the operating conditions of the plant when selecting a lubricant which has a base oil viscosity that is suitable. If the viscosity is too low then

additional friction can be expected, causing wear and premature failure. If the viscosity is too high then viscous drag results. In both instances more energy than would otherwise be needed is required, which of course directly relates to efficiency and operating costs. GreaseMax lubricators improve plant efficiency and reduce costs by providing reliable, controlled lubrication. GreaseMax (03) 9723 8600 www.greasemax.com.au

MANUFACTURING EMPLOYMENT

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! Like most businesses, Industry Update has at times struggled to find the right people - or any people for that matter, via specific employment sites. Many businesses are also inundated with responses from applicants that have no qualifications or are overqualified. Manufacturers generally require staff that have a specific set of skills and qualifications but finding such people can be costly in both time and resources.

What better place to advertise manufacturing positions vacant than in Australia’s leading manufacturing media platforms!
