trial palletiser, incorporating patented MOTOPAL 780 robotic gripper technology. This trial system had been running successfully on a range of shelfready cartons for about two years and had proven capable of handling every possible configuration, including some of the more difficult products.

As iconic Australian brand Arnott’s has grown over the years and product lines have become increasingly complex, it became clear there was a need to upgrade to a next generation of smart palletising.

The 25-year-old Motoman palletiser that Arnott’s had installed in its NSW factory in Huntingwood in 1996 had well outperformed its lifespan, having produced several million pallets. Arnott’s required an integrated palletising solution that would work within existing space constraints and provide the flexibility to handle a large range of shelf-ready cartons at high speeds. It needed to be easily programmable, to support rapid product configuration

and changeover. Pallets would need to be checked, wrapped and SSCC labelled, and all of this was to be achieved with

So, the next step was to design a system that would fit the available space, which was located in a two-storey mezzanine at the end of the factory, with access only to a single lift to the ground floor delivery dock. EDITORIAL EDITOR BARRY O'HAGAN

PUBLISHER SCOTT FILBY

We look forward to taking the next steps with you

Covid-19 came as quite a shock to many businesses in the manufacturing sector, but perhaps more surprising was that the pandemic would ultimately have a silver lining for the majority of manufacturers, associated industries and even Industry Update Media. As the owner of Industry Update Media, I recall that 2020 was the best start to a year since 2015, and everyone, it seemed, was looking forward to reaping the benefits of the incredible and prolonged Australian, strong-as-steel economy! But a new reality was speeding towards us and, as early as the second week of February 2020, I became concerned that the little-known virus that was spreading around the globe was going to change life as we knew it. It did! Still, in Australia at that time, the worry, concern and fear had not yet surfaced

as Covid-19 was only known as a minor coronavirus. Astonishingly, however, the front cover headline of the February/March 2020 edition that I and Nicole Charles, IU office manager/PA, chose was, “Is it time to bring more manufacturing back to Australia?” It was, arguably, the best headline that I had ever picked, but within four weeks the world changed forever as “lockdown”, “iso” and “coronavirus” became the vernacular not of some - but of all humankind! Remarkably, Covid-19 has given the Australian manufacturing industry a new lease of life. At Industry Update we look forward to taking this journey with you! If you would like to share your experience, please email me: scott@ industryupdate.com.au

A bumper edition to celebrate economic upswing Welcome to our bumper 72-page edition of Industry Update, coming to you on the back of a resurgence in economic activity in Australia, manufacturing included. For example, The Ai Group’s Performance of Manufacturing Index for May recorded an eighth consecutive month of recovery, the highest monthly result since March 2018 and the fourth highest since the peak body commenced its index in 1992 (read more on page 11). The increase in advertising and our growing list of upcoming events, see page 70, also bear testament to rising business confidence. Of course, we are not yet through the woods as far as the pandemic is concerned but staying positive is half the battle. We hope that you will come away feeling buoyed after paging though the many positive stories in our June/July magazine.

We also hope you’ll notice a strong focus on the people behind many of our success stories. For example, the coffee roasting business story that grew from the shared vision of two young entrepreneurs operating from a Gladesville garage 22 years ago (page 10); the packaging equipment company started 14 years ago by an entrepreneur with three generations of packaging machinery in his blood (page 12); the Australian family-owned and operated boutique producer of hand-crafted dips (page 22); an industrial designer who believes in sharing information with everyone, even competitors, for the common good (page 29); and a CEO who has worked in her business for 30 years, supplying safety devices to the crane and manufacturing industry. She is now preparing to hand over the reins to the next generation (page 30).

INDUSTRY POLITICS The Hon Christian Porter MP – Parliament of Australia, Minister for Industry, Science, and Technology

Budget initiatives will drive industry growth It has only been a few months since I commenced as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, but a lot has happened in that time. The Morrison Government invested more than $475 million in the May Budget for initiatives that will drive industry growth and scientific development, building on our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy (MMS) announced in the previous Budget. Manufacturing industries in Australia have shown themselves to be incredibly resilient and adaptable in meeting the challenges of Covid-19. With the support of the government, employment in the manufacturing sector is almost at pre-Covid levels and is on the rise. The Ai Group’s Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index shows that manufacturing is now a flourishing sector. That is an impressive performance after severe disruptions. Funding from the May Budget includes $387 million towards building the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be at the cutting-edge of scientific discovery.

The SKA has been called the world’s largest radio telescope, but it actually will consist of two telescopes – one in South Africa, and one in the Murchison region of Western Australia. I am very pleased that this investment in my home state will create hundreds of jobs. In fact, expressions of interest have

Action Plan, which will support business to adopt and develop AI. The investment will unlock highskilled jobs, enable industry wide transformation and improve lives. AI is playing an increasingly important role in modern manufacturing. • $116.7 million over four years for

“That is an impressive performance after severe disruptions.” the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). That builds on the $238 million committed over four years in last year's budget to ensure the long-term safety, quality and reliability of ANSTO’s core operations, including nuclear medicine production. (About 7580% of nuclear medicine isotopes used in Australia come from ANSTO’s Lucas Heights campus in Sydney, which I recently visited.)

just opened for the first SKA related construction contract. Our investment in this project highlights that science and advanced manufacturing are at the heart of the Government’s National Economic Recovery Plan from the Covid-19 recession.

Other Budget initiatives:

• Investing $124.1 million over the next six years to deliver Australia’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)

• $66.4 million over six years to

increase Australia’s workforce skills in cyber security and emerging technologies, including funding for at least 234 scholarships that support emerging technologies areas, such as those identified through the Modern Manufacturing Strategy. • Advancing Australia’s manufacturing capacity by developing onshore mRNA vaccine capability, through continued negotiations and an approach to the Australian market. Prior to the Budget, funding was opened for all six of our National Manufacturing Priorities under the Modern Manufacturing Strategy – Defence, Space, Recycling and Clean Energy, Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing, Food and Beverage, and Medical Products. This funding will help manufacturers to scale-up production, commercialise their products and operations, and integrate into domestic and global supply chains. The government will also accelerate the creation of a $1 billion Sovereign Guided Weapons Enterprise, boosting skilled jobs and helping secure Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. The Enterprise will support missile and guided weapons manufacturing in Australia for use across the Australian Defence Force. This strong commitment to manufacturing will continue. As Minister I will work with industry stakeholders to increase the strength and vibrancy of the sector, keeping it at the heart of our economic recovery, as we work to create more well-paid jobs for Australians. INDUSTRY POLITICS personally find that hard to fathom. Why would a government refuse to acknowledge a report that spoke glowingly of its own work?

The Hon Ed Husic MP – Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation

Industry Growth Centres could be even more effective with increased funding With much flourish, the Coalition announced its plan for a $1.5bn Modern Manufacturing Strategy (MMS), but red flags are already emerging around the future integrity of the program. Despite the fanfare, MMS has not recorded the creation of a single job, despite Scott Morrison promising to create 80,000 direct jobs in manufacturing. Senate Estimates hearings at the beginning of June have triggered concerns within the Opposition that existing successful industry initiatives like the Industry Growth Centres (IGCs) may be hollowed out and siphoned off to pay for the MMS – paving the way for another Coalition electioneering slush fund. Prior to Senate Estimates I had been hearing anxious whispers that the government was getting ready to pull funding for IGCs. IGCs have a proven track record around the world and have had a positive impact here. It was recently

reported that the Federal Government is refusing to release a report into the IGCs that says as much.

Given the challenges monopolising the attention of the current Industry Minister, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is yet to see it too. But the reports I’ve seen suggest that IGCs are proving effective and could be more impactful with increased government funding.

“Why would a government refuse to acknowledge a report that spoke glowingly of its own work?” diversify into new high value products and services. In Germany, there are 71 Fraunhofer institutes that receive 2.8 billion Euros of public funds annually, compared to the $50 million a year received by growth centres in Australia. The UK’s Catapult program has

doesn’t stack up due to an overall poor program design and lack of funding compared to overseas models – issues made clear in a secret $400,000 taxpayer-funded consultant’s report, as referred to above. It is claimed the previous minister, Karen Andrews, didn’t see it. I

A fundamental aspect of growth centres succeeding is because they dispense grants based on their deep knowledge of the sectors in which they operate and provide valuable support to businesses. This seems to be a much more productive pathway for future industry support as opposed to the establishment of a grants program where a government minister makes a final say about funding support, regardless of departmental advice. This politically venal model has generated all the worst headlines in other areas: sports rorts, road rorts and regional funding rorts. We cannot have industry funding subjected to the same treatment. For the sake of our economy and future jobs, we need an industry policy and funding model we can genuinely believe in.

CASE STUDY – ST GEORGE BANK By Barry O’Hagan Simple, high-quality coffee is revered in Italy. So when an Australian of Italian heritage, who has been involved in the coffee business most of his life and visits Italy regularly, tells you that Australian roasted coffee is the world’s best, you sit up and take notice. And when he goes on to tell you that his business will soon launch one of the country’s first Australian grown and roasted coffees, then you really take notice. The man we are talking about is Ross Schinella, co-founder of the Schibello Coffee Group. He and business partner Tony Sorbello have come a long way since their business venture’s humble beginnings in a Gladesville garage in 1999. At the time, there were just 22 coffee roasters in Australia, says Ross. By providing old-fashioned service and building relationships, Schibello Coffee Group has grown to now have national and international presence. Schibello’s latest goal is to launch its own fully fledged Australian-made product in a market shared by nearly 1,100 roasters. This new blend will be grown in Australia, harvested by Australians, roasted on Schibello’s premises in Sydney and Brisbane, and sold in Australian-made packaging. It may even be bundled with an Australian-made coffee machine. Why is this so significant? The majority of the Australian coffee market imports raw coffee from countries such as Brazil, India and Colombia to then roast here, as locally grown coffee is rare and also far more expensive. However, Australiangrown coffee is a growing space and Schibello wants to bring visibility and support to local farmers through this new project, as well as explore the unique flavours of our local crop. “In Australia, we’ve got amazing coffee. Not just great coffee,” Ross told Industry Update. “Worldwide, we are the leaders in coffee. I can tell you, I’ve travelled all around the world and been to every single corner that has coffee, and nobody does coffee like Australia. It’s because we’re dedicated to bringing to life amazing experiences, and we’re educating the rest of the world,” said Ross. In addition to its Sydney and Brisbane roasteries, Schibello is also looking at expanding its facilities to Melbourne. It also has roasting rooms in Singapore, and exports to Fiji. “Fiji is our biggest-growing market at the moment. We’re lucky to have some great partners there, and we are probably among the top two brands in Fiji. We also sell coffee in the US; it’s a lengthy process but we’ll slowly educate them on quality and better experiences,” said Ross. Ross and Tony took their business to another level in 2014 when they acquired the boutique brands Arte Coffee Roasters and Cleanskin Coffee Co. Ross says the latter is not for everyone but is featured in a selection of specialty coffee outlets, where the focus is to create unique coffee experiences. Arte Coffee is targeted at the conscious consumer market, with a portion of all sales donated to the International Women in Coffee Association. Like good coffee, there’s more to Schibello than meets the eye. Its offering to café partners includes barista training,

Schibello Coffee gets a latte love from St.George Bank

equipment and merchandise support, business advisory and even design consulting. What are Schibello’s biggest challenges? Ross says that the closing of Australia’s international borders has created a shortage of hospitality workers and skilled labour from overseas. “There are so many businesses out there chasing chefs, baristas and floor staff. Operators are going back on the tools because they have been forced to. They can’t work on their business while working in the business.” Ross is the first to admit that the

business could not have grown to where it’s at today were it not for a helping hand along the way from St.George Bank. He partnered with the bank from day one, back in 1999. While the loans have grown since then, so too has the relationship. “That’s the nice thing about St.George. They’ve always had key personnel who are accessible and that’s important. Sometimes you have to make calls and decisions and you don’t need the red tape. The current team at Parramatta are awesome,” said Ross. “Industry people are also key in this relationship. The best thing St.George

Bank did was introduce the industry division, because they have people in there who actually know their stuff. They’re always helpful and always ready to lend a hand. “We’ve probably stayed so tight because they get us. Guys like Matt (Kelly, Head of Manufacturing and Wholesale) and Pete (Crabtree, Relationship Director) have always been readily available to give us the best advice. The industry experience is important because they obviously know trends. ”If anyone asks me who are the best out there, I always say St.George.” St.George Bank’s services to Schibello don’t stop at loans either. The bank has been able to help the roaster with advice on currencies and provide access to experts outside the industry on topics such as assets, insurance and superannuation. Matt, who has known Ross nearly as long as Schibello has been in business, said: “Our relationship has grown over a number of years. We’re proud to have been able to assist them in their acquisitions and growth strategy to help them achieve their goals. We look forward to doing that for many years into the future and using our contacts to help them grow and take advantage of whatever opportunities are out there, such as government grants or R&D opportunities.” Schibello Coffee (02) 9807 6033 www.schibellocaffe.com

NEWS

Manufacturing expands for 8th consecutive month The Australian Industry Group Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (Australian PMI) edged 0.1 points higher to 61.8 in May, indicating an eighth consecutive month of recovery following the severe disruptions of Covid-19 in Q2 of 2020 (readings above 50 points indicate expansion in activity, with higher results indicating a faster rate of expansion). The May result represents the index's highest monthly result since March 2018 and the fourth highest since the Australian PMI commenced in 1992. Ai Group Chief Executive Innes Willox said: "Australia's manufacturing sector maintained its rapid pace of expansion in May, fuelled by strong demand from the construction sector, a pick-up in business investment and healthy demand from households. “Each of the six diverse manufacturing groups expanded at a more rapid rate in the month, led by the machinery & equipment; building products; and chemicals sectors.

“Manufacturing production and employment accelerated and, while the pace of expansion eased from April's record high, sales also continued to rise. “Manufacturers experienced further pressure on input costs and with wages also rising more rapidly, they are seeking to recover some of these extra costs from customers. With capacity utilisation running at high levels and new orders continuing to grow, manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to fill positions. While the new Victorian lockdown will dampen enthusiasm somewhat, these conditions are likely to be setting the stage for a lift in investment by manufacturers," Mr Willox said.

Australian PMI key findings

• All six manufacturing sectors in the Australian PMI expanded in May and at a faster pace than in April (see table below). The strongest results were in the sectors that directly supply the construction sector, including building

materials (up 3.8 points to 66.4), machinery & equipment (up 0.2 points to 64.7) and chemicals (up 2.1 points to 65.7). • Six of the seven activity indices in the Australian PMI expanded in May (with only the exports index indicating a contraction (down 9.9 points to 48.9). Production (up 0.9 points to 64.5), employment (up 3.3 points to 61.3) and new orders (up 1.5 points to 64.9) accelerated into very strong expansion. • The input prices index rose further in May (up 8.0 points to 82.1), reaching its highest level since June 2008. Input prices for manufacturers are surging for various raw materials, due to high global commodity prices for metals, oil and other key inputs. Manufacturers’ selling prices increased again in May (up 5.4 points to 58.3), suggesting that more manufacturers are passing on some of these higher input costs to their customers. • The average wages index rose again in

Mr Wardell explained: “The launch of a permanent presence in Queensland reflects increasing demand and the need for Packserv to respond more efficiently to serve our Queensland customers, who previously had to rely on cover from our Sydney office.” Mr Wardell also hinted at planned development of the technology behind the machines that Packserv manufactures. “There will be vastly superior products released during the course of this year. We have a very talented team of engineers working closely with two local universities dedicated to fine-tuning this next generation technology,” he said.

Niche position

Packserv now manufactures wholly ‘Australian Made’ high quality packaging machines. The company was founded by Mr Wardell 14 years ago and has established a niche position in providing packaging equipment for rental to the food and agri-business, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, industrial and automotive markets. Government grant boosts productivity at integrated co-packing business A $325,000 government grant has helped regional Victoria’s largest co-packing business increase its productivity through the introduction of an innovative product line and new automated equipment. The grant, from the Agriculture Workforce Plan, has also enabled the Australian Disability Enterpriseregistered business to train 142 new and existing workers to operate the new equipment. Merriwa Industries in Wangaratta is reputed to be one of Australia’s largest integrated employers, which includes people with disability. It has a team of more than 300 people, including more than 100 supported workers. Merriwa operates commercial businesses in packaging and the timber and garden nursery sectors, along with delivering child, youth and family support services. The Agriculture Workforce Plan is helping Victorians, including those who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, to find paid work while helping to ensure the state›s vital agriculture sector has the workforce it needs. Employees are supported to develop transferrable skills and receive training to increase their future

employment prospects, while also receiving ongoing personal development training. Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas says Merriwa Industries is a major employer in Wangaratta and the north east, and is successfully adapting its operations to take on new workers. She recently met with recruits to see how new funding was benefiting the business and workers. “We are backing businesses like Merriwa Industries because they create jobs for regional Victorians, including for people that may otherwise face barriers to employment. It’s a win for individuals, the community and the local economy,” she said. Merriwa Industries Chief Executive Officer Bart Crawley says the AWP funding has had a significant impact on Merriwa Industries’ ability to inform, prepare, support and train staff to deal with the significant challenges Covid created. One of these challenges is the unprecedented demand from clients for their services. “The funding has allowed us to modify our physical footprint and processes, increasing our flexibility to our customers’ needs. This included investment in new equipment, technology and systems to support the

demand, as well as significant skills development through targeted training. “The funding was a crucial element in our organisation successfully navigating our teams through the Covid challenges,” said Mr Crawley. Merriwa Industries Ltd (03) 5722 7600 https://merriwa.org.au

Reuniting the industry through foodpro 2021

Australia’s leading food and beverage manufacturing event, foodpro, returns to Sydney Showground from 25-28 July 2021. Four years have elapsed since it was last held, so for many people it will be an opportune time to reunite and reconnect with Australia’s food and beverage manufacturing industry for four days of collaboration, business, and education.

No matter what industry you are in, last year affected everyone to some degree. Food and drink is Australia’s largest manufacturing sector, accounting for around 39% of Australia’s manufacturing turnover. The industry remains in a strong position; however, the pandemic provided its own challenges for the food sector with fluctuations in consumer demand and

disruption to the supply chain across the nation. The 2021 foodpro provides the opportunity for businesses to explore what is new on the market, hear from the leading experts and exchange ideas. “What we do now really matters – not just for our own industry, but the growth of the entire country,” says Melissa Clendinen, foodpro Event Manager. “Foodpro is where the industry’s brightest minds join forces and generate solutions that will take us towards a more sustainable and safer world. “Foodpro is a great opportunity for all stakeholders within the food and beverage supply chain to unite and learn how we can all work together.”

Covid-safe events – conducting business in a safe environment

The foodpro team says it understands the importance of events such as foodpro to support business and economic growth. Face-to-face interaction is the foundation of building strong relationships. In-person events create the necessary push for business to happen and have significant ROI implications.

The foodpro team is working with stakeholders to ensure the delivery of an innovative Covid-safe event, with a strong focus on ensuring the safety of exhibitors and attendees, adhering to all guidelines and restrictions. The team says that for the event to be Covid-safe, it will mean it looking slightly different from previous years, but that visitors can rest assured when attending that foodpro is doing everything to ensure it is #ExpoReady. Foodpro is using new technology and innovation to deliver an event experience

Show floor zones – exploring every step of manufacturing

The 2021 foodpro show floor features a diverse range of zones, aimed at covering the entire manufacturing process. All major industry sectors including Dairy, Meat, Beverage, Packaged Food, Bakery, Frozen, Fresh & Snack Foods are being encouraged to attend to discover what changes can be made to streamline production processes and invest in the future.

that is better suited to the current climate. This includes a range of protective measures to ensure foodpro is a safe and controlled environment in which to do business within Covid-19 guidelines, including: - Pre-registration required for contact tracing - QR code scanning to minimise registration points - No contact policy – elbow bump in place of handshakes - Queue management and crowd control - Rigorous cleaning and sanitisation - Covid marshals at the event - Digital signage delivering key messages. - Modification of floorplan to minimise congestion.

Hear from the brightest minds at free seminar series Foodpro is delighted to offer the full Seminar Series free to all attendees, with much of the content delivered by leading food industry associations and hosted in the impressive Schneider Electric Dome Theatre. Visitors can expect to hear speakers from the likes of Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), Food Innovation Australia (FIAL), Wiley Food, CSIRO Agriculture and Food, and many more. Foodpro says it is also excited to be partnering with the Annual Convention of the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST). As well as hosting sessions at foodpro, the AIFST annual conference will be running alongside the event bringing the

latest thinking in food technology and processing all into one place. Tickets for the conference are available to purchase separately on the AIFST website. What trends can your business invest in now? How is consumer food perception evolving? The Seminar Series will cover a range of topics this year, with a particular focus on the future of food, impact of Covid and the role of sustainability. Food compatibility among the many attributes of wear-resistant iglidur I151 Register to attend foodproexh.com

For cost-effective 3D printing of special parts, look no further than the blue, foodcompatible tribo-filament from igus.

we have now developed iglidur I151," says Tom Krause, Head of the igus GmbH Additive Manufacturing Business Unit.

Iglidur I151 prints easily, and has an optimal coefficient of friction and wear. The new tribo-filament is a refinement of the easy-to-machine igus iglidur I150 all-rounder filament. Because it is blue, it can be used to manufacture special parts that are optically detectable in the food industry.

The new tribo-filament is suitable for printing components with great wear resistance. Because the material is enriched with solid lubricants, no additional lubrication is necessary. This rules out any contamination hazard.

Food compatibility according to the FDA and to EU Regulation 10/2011 also qualifies the high-performance polymer for use in the food and cosmetics industries. Igus has included iglidur I150, its all-rounder material, in its 3D printing materials range since 2017. The filament is very easy to use with conventional 3D printers. This allows special parts to be manufactured quickly and cost-effectively with the FDM process. "Many customers, primarily from the food industry, have requested a blue, FDA-compliant filament with properties similar to those of iglidur I150. That is why

The printed components comply with the requirements of the FDA and of EU Regulation 10/2011, making them ideal for use in the food and cosmetics industries. The blue colour provides the required optical detectability. iglidur I151 can be used with any 3D printer that can be set to a nozzle temperature of 250 degrees Celsius. Print food-compliant special parts yourself or order them from Treotham Iglidur I151 exhibits mechanical properties comparable to those of iglidur I150 with respect to stability, toughness and layer adhesion. Treotham’s triflex TRX energy supply system revolutionises robot motion The newly developed four-dimensional triflex TRX energy chain from igus ensures that moving cables on industrial robots can be guided safely, easily and compactly.

TRX system was developed based on the triflex R energy chain. This is a fourdimensional energy chain in which the retraction system is already integrated.

The new design replaces classic robot hose packages and retraction systems. A special feature is the 40% retraction length enabled by a unique telescopic mechanism inside the chain. This allows users to save space not only on the third axis of their robot, but also save up to 83% weight and reduce costs.

"With TRX, we created a spacesaving chain that can be fixed directly and compactly on the third axis. The energy supply twists into itself, lengthens and shortens spirally as in a telescopic pull-out, by up to 40%," says Mr Ottersbach.

The three-dimensional triflex R igus energy chains from Treotham are widely used in the industry for fail-safe guidance of cables and hoses on robots. Retraction systems have so far been used on the third axis to ensure that no loops are created during the movement of the energy chain system which could hinder the robot.

For this purpose, igus relies on a screw connector system in the unique mechanism as well as on an integrated reset band. The band brings the chain links back to their starting point time and again, and thereby the retraction force can be adjusted. The cables are placed in the chain in the form of a spiral and are guided safely in the movement with the help of the chain.

"However, the axes on the robots offer less and less space, so a new solution was needed," says Jörg Ottersbach, head of the e-chains business unit at igus GmbH.

In addition, the cables and hoses are fastened in place in the middle of the TRX so that they do not leave their position when the chain is pulled.

No sooner said than done, the triflex

Compared to other retraction

systems, the user saves up to 83% weight and requires less than half the space. In this way, the performance of the robot can be further improved, and costs are significantly reduced by dispensing with an additional retraction system. TRX can be easily connected to existing TRE series triflex R chains. As with

triflex R, the cables can be quickly filled into the energy chain from the outside. Contact Treotham Automation for more information on the TRX system. Treotham Automation 1300 657 564 www.treotham.com.au

Fresh Fodder triples productivity with Jet Technologies packaging solution Register to attend foodproexh.com

After experiencing a major surge in demand due to the pandemic, an Australian family-owned and operated boutique producer of hand-crafted dips, Fresh Fodder, has now tripled its productivity rates with the Ilpra FS2500 Rotary Cup Filler; part of the unique packaging and lidding range from Jet Technologies.

On top of this surge in demand, Fresh Fodder received new business from more than 400 Woolworths stores nationwide, which pushed them to reconsider their technology investments to meet customer needs and maintain competitiveness within today’s fast-paced grocery market. “As demand began to rapidly pick up, there soon came a point where our previous operational capabilities were outrun, which is where the investment in the FS2500 came into play as a crucial tool to increase our productivity and efficiency levels,” said Max Schofield, Managing Director of Fresh Fodder. “As all of this was happening right

in the middle of the pandemic; we needed a solution fast. Thankfully, Jet Technologies was able to organise and

install the new machine in a very tight timeframe, which helped us greatly throughout Covid-19 and to meet the high demand coming from Woolworths.” Based in Orange, NSW, Fresh Fodder produces 15 tonnes of product per week across 12 flavours in both retail packs and food service bulk sizes; distributing nationwide to stores such as Woolworths, Aldi, IGA Supermarkets, COSTCO, Harris Farm Markets, and independent grocers, fruit markets, cafes, and delis.

“The investment in the Illpra FS2500 was part of a holistic upgrade of our production floor, as well as our businesswide plans to optimise operations with technology and improve the quality of our products. Since the machine was installed in October 2020, we have been able streamline our manufacturing to produce three times the amount of our existing throughput with the same headcount of staff,” said Max. “This has had the biggest overall impact on our bottom line. As a business, we are now seeing a huge 25% growth year-on-year, so upgrading to this new solution allows us to optimise operations and keep up with our current and future growth.” The FS2500, from Italian packaging manufacturer Ilpra, is a mechanical rotary filling and sealing machine with eight stations, designed to fill dispensable plastic cups and containers with liquid and semi-solid products. Part of Jet Technologies’ premier range of fill seal solutions, the FS2500 is the ideal system to streamline the manufacturing process of a diverse range of products including dairy, dips, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,

desserts, and ready-made meals. “With such an upheaval of the grocery market over the past year, we are glad that we could help Fresh Fodder streamline its operations to match unprecedented growth,” said Daniel Malki, Director of Jet Technologies. “With countless changes to the market, global and local supply chains have become very hard to manoeuvre, which has challenged countless industries to find an innovative means of adapting. So, it is fantastic to see Australian businesses such as Fresh Fodder taking such a proactive approach to addressing these challenges head on, by investing in technology that help to future-proof their manufacturing operations.” Jet Technologies +612 8399 4999 http://www.jet-ap.com/

ROBOTICS/ AUTOMATION Continued from page 1 would need to use roof access via cranage. The adaptable modular system design, featuring eight Motoman robots, achieves maximum floor space utility. The use of windows-based smart MAX AGVs provides increased flexibility, while achieving required productivity rates. Employing proprietary Motoman MotoLogix software, robots can be completely programmed and controlled via the host AB-PLC. This means all unique product programs can be simply changed in an instant, on the fly. The result is a modular palletiser system that is intelligent, versatile, flexible, and intuitive. Robotic Automation calls it MOTOPAL. Shane West, Arnott’s Group Regional Project Manager, was the primary client point of contact throughout the project. He said that after 25 years, the existing palletising system (at Huntingwood) faced future obsolescence and was the catalyst to go to market for a new solution. “We went out to a few suppliers but found others provided a more conventional solution, with product conveyors and the like, similar to what we already had and not lending itself as well to the available floorspace,” said Shane. “Robotic Automation’s solution was more innovative; it was a cleaner and more modern solution that presented an efficient use of space,” he said. “It offered ease of operation, requiring less operator movement across floors and stairs – and had fewer ‘moving parts’ meaning less likelihood of reliability issues.” Project commencement was pending

Innovative solution helps Arnott’s keep producing biscuits construction of the new factory space, with mezzanine level. “The first stage of the project commenced in December 2019, and obviously Covid then became a factor to work around in accessing site,” said Shane.

As can sometimes be the way, “the things that we thought might cause issues and planned for, were not a problem at all. There were a couple of things, though, that we weren’t expecting that caused us some headaches,” said Shane.

“Robotic Automation worked around this and were creative in programming the AGV tracks (for example) via livestream offsite,” he said. “We ran the existing systems in parallel until we were confident that the new system was fully operational, then we cut over.”

right-sized, modifiable and expandable for future growth; we can add robot cells or retrofit, and the grippers are designed to handle a range of future packaging options.” “We are definitely happy with the end result and would consider Robotic Automation for any further work.”

Shane says that the solution has helped the business achieve its objectives. “We now have a reliable system that is

feely available for all its cobots. Hirebotics has cloud connected their cobots for many years and recently released some of their capabilities for free to the Universal Robots ecosystem.

“The benefits of cloud connecting robots on ‘local shores’ are clear; the companies that exploit these capabilities will have a competitive advantage over companies that don’t, particularly in this current ‘stay-at-home’ environment.”

Work from home and disruption have fast-tracked cloud tech

A recent Deloitte report cited the rise of automation in the manufacturing sector. It states that in 2018 humans carried out 71 percent of tasks, but this is forecast to drop to 58 percent by 2022. The report also found that although 75 million jobs will be eliminated, 133 million new jobs will be created. So, where does cloud robotics come into play and how will it serve Australia and New Zealand? “Simply put, cloud robotics is an emerging field which makes use of cloud-based technologies such as cloud computing, cloud storage and other

technologies to remotely use, service and program robots” explains James McKew, Regional Director of Universal Robots Asia-Pacific. “The workplace of the future is now. With the need for social distancing and staff safety of the utmost concern, productivity is at stake and this is where cobots and (in particular) ‘connected cobots’ come in. In ever-changing and disruptive times, they’re set to become your biggest competitive advantage”. Universal Robots has partnered with their OEM, Hirebotics to make cloud tools

McKew says that there are numerous benefits to connecting your cobots to the cloud. These can be put into three primary categories: Analytics, Backups and Support.

Connectivity with 5G a big plus for automated factory manufacturing

Precise connectivity is now an essential in the factory process and packaging facilities which use robotic drive systems that transfer workpieces from one process to the next.

So for accurate control of measurement systems, sensor/grippers on the last axis and end-of-arm tools, which is part and parcel of synchronisation between robots, a stable and reliable response time without high latency is important. Enter wireless and the prospects for use of 5G technology to drive robotic systems. “These days the end-of-arm tool is connected using cable-based data communication such as digital I/O, I/O link or Industrial Ethernet (PROFINET). However, a combination of wired and wireless communication can be useful under certain circumstances,” says LAPP Australia General Manager, Mr Simon Pullinger. The LAPP family-owned company – which has established a full Branch in

Australia to service manufacturing major industries, including food and beverage materials handling, processing, packaging and despatch – says ensuring optimum connectivity can ideally involve a combination of wired and wireless communication. “The choice of wired and wireless depends very much on the application. It is about choosing the most effective and flexible combination to ideally meet present needs and prepare for evolving technology,” says Mr Pullinger.

Why wireless?

1. The wear on the data network cables in their composite dress packs is high, with high dynamics and due to ever-increasing work spaces required for the robots. This increases the risk of the systems failing. 2. Small batch sizes and frequent conversion require flexible communication concepts that enable the components to communicate with one

another in almost real time. 3. The elimination of data cables in the dress pack reduces the weight and allows the robot to move more dynamically.

What 5G has to do •

The control signals must reach end of arm tools such as a gripper in real time. It does not have to be at rest – remote IO is wirelessly connected to the controller. The required latency of 4-8ms must be complied with. This will be feasible using 5G in the future. Today’s WLAN systems are limited to 10ms.

Localisation of the gripper to up to +/0.5 mm is not yet possible with 5G, says Mr Pullinger.

Q&A WITH SWISSLOG

How and why you should futureproof your automation investment By Sean Ryan, Head of Sales and Consulting, Swisslog Australia

QUESTION: How can automation be used in periods of unexpectedly high demand? (for example, the e-grocery industry during the pandemic) ANSWER: When Covid-19 was at its worst in Australia (around MarchApril 2020), grocery store shelves were stripped bare, and it looked like we didn’t have enough product to keep up with increased demand. However, this was deceptive, because at any given time, roughly three months’ worth of goods exist within the supply chain – the challenge is getting it into and out of distribution centres, and into stores. This is where high density, high throughput Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) could be a major help in meeting future demand spikes. These systems can store more pallets in less space, and retrieve them more efficiently, compared with manual or alternative technologies. The faster goods can be retrieved and sent to store, the faster shelves can be restocked to meet higher demands. Automated systems are typically more compact, delivering major savings that can be reinvested in areas that truly make a difference to business, such as service to its existing markets and research and development of new markets. A more agile, more intelligent business can move sooner to take advantage of emerging favourable trends, and more swiftly to avoid impending supply gaps, traps and flaws in evolving plans. Finally, warehouse automation is becoming increasingly modular and flexible in design, functionality and

behaviours have been accelerated by Covid-19, so has the development of automation systems. Spurred on by market demands, we’re seeing a stronger development of standardised automation systems that leverage proven technology, optimised for grocery fulfillment, to enable faster deployment than was previously possible. throughput. This enables additional robots, pick ports and even, to a certain extent, storage to be added to respond to unforeseen economic circumstance such as Covid-19. This will increasingly be the case as suppliers of automation look

grocery shopping behaviour as a result of Covid-19. Now, many industry analysts and e-grocery companies are projecting that these short-term adaptations will translate into long-term behaviour changes. The

Swisslog designs, develops, and delivers automation for health systems, warehouses and distribution centres. to increasingly provide solution ‘flex’ by offering capacity via XaaS models. (XaaS is a general term for cloud service delivery models. It stands for 'anything' (X) as a service.) QUESTION: What effect did “panic buying” have on supply chains in the e-grocery industry? ANSWER: According to research from Acosta, a sales and marketing agency in the consumer packaged goods industry, about 65% of consumers changed their

pandemic has, in many cases, accelerated changes that were already happening in the market. The challenge for grocers – and traditional retailers more broadly – is adapting to a large step up in demand, while still providing competitive fulfilment times. Automation is an asset in achieving these dual objectives, but selecting technologies that meet the unique demands of the e-grocery industry is the key to success. In much the same way that

QUESTION: For companies looking to invest in automation, what should they look for, to future-proof their operations? ANSWER: The best automation solutions will depend to a degree on a company’s selected e-fulfilment strategy, but as with e-commerce automation in general, grocers should seek out solutions that are flexible, data-driven and robotic to ensure they won’t become obsolete as the market changes and can leverage new technologies as they emerge. Flexible solutions are those that can scale easily and adapt to change as it occurs. Data-driven solutions deliver the intelligence to better manage product flow and have the capability to incorporate machine learning that enables them to self-optimise. Robotic solutions are required to increase productivity and drive down fulfilment costs. The primary automation solutions being used or considered by the industry are either robot-assisted picking or goods-to-person automation systems. Goods-to-person picking is a concept that has been widely adopted in e-commerce and multi-channel warehouses to enable higher productivity and faster order fulfilment times. Instead of pickers walking up and down warehouse aisles to pull orders, the goods-to-person system allows the picker to remain stationary, with an automated storage and retrieval system delivering the products they need to fulfil the next order as it is needed. Pick time is thus reduced significantly, and accuracy is improved, while pickers experience less fatigue and injury risk. Swisslog Australia Pty Ltd 02 9869 5900 www.swisslog.com

Top-selling UR10e robot packs on the kilos The UR10e, Universal Robots’ best-selling robot, is getting an increased payload, which will allow it to handle heavier objects and be used for a wider range of tasks. The new payload of 12.5kg will offer new possibilities, such as palletising, machine tending, and packaging. Its price remains unchanged. “Universal Robots is committed to continuous improvement based on meaningful conversations with customers and our ability to address critical market opportunities,” said Kim Povlsen, President of Universal Robots. “Our customers have already deployed UR cobots on a wide variety of palletising applications. Over time, they have identified opportunities to utilise our UR10e cobot in handling tasks with heavier items,” he explained. “In response to this demand, we have enhanced the UR10e to support greater payloads, providing customers with exciting new deployment capabilities.” James McKew, Regional Director for Universal Robots Asia Pacific, welcomes this advancement to its well-established

CAPS

portfolio, saying that Australia and New Zealand will stand to greatly benefit. “Internationally, the feedback has been very positive and as the demand for collaborative robots (cobots) continues to grow locally, we anticipate the added benefits of the increased payload to generate greater demand.” The enhanced UR10e retains the small footprint, intuitive programming experience, uncompromising repeatability, commitment to quality, and trusted

performance that Universal Robots customers have come to expect, but its increased payload capacity means that users can now do more: • The UR10e can now be used in palletising applications with cartons weighing up to 10kg and a 2.5kg gripper. • The UR10e is now more versatile for other material handling tasks, too, such as loading and unloading heavier workpieces in machine tending deployments and packaging of heavy items. • The enhanced UR10e’s greater payload takes more weight from the hands and shoulders of humans, leading to improved ergonomics and working conditions. With overexertion

and repetitive motion accounting for an estimated 24% and 8% of workplace injuries respectively in the US alone, this provides significant relief to human workers. “Humans are not designed to lift heavy goods repeatedly, but our cobots handle these tasks with ease. By taking over unergonomic activities, UR cobots boost productivity, improve product quality, and help businesses rethink how to best use the creative and problem-solving abilities of their workforce – all while keeping people safe,” adds Povlsen. MATERIALS HANDLING Black Lab Design shares its expertise for the benefit of the customer Visits from competitors are not something many businesses welcome but Black Lab Design is so proud of what it has achieved that it takes pleasure in sharing information with anyone. “More efficient manufacturers help make Australia a better place for successful manufacturing,” says CEO Daen Simmat. “I have always believed in the need to build close customer relationships and have encouraged customers to visit our factory. These events give customers an in-depth understanding of our capabilities, often resulting in constructive suggestions for solutions that add to our efficiency and a better product for the customer. “We encourage customers and suppliers to spend time in our factory to understand the way we operate and how their input and suggestions can provide mutual benefit. Visitors walk away with an expanded awareness of what is possible by pushing the boundaries. Customer education through hands-on factory experiences is important

to us because we know these activities help to build trust and encourage a cooperative environment.”

high-quality products in a short period, without incurring significant additional capital investment costs,” said Mr Simmat.

The highly experienced industrial designer is passionate about designing for manufacture and creating effective, fit-for-purpose solutions in a timely manner. He is driven and ambitious to showcase the capabilities of the Black Lab team and the manufacturing industry in Australia.

“Our strategy is to pursue high-value business across market segments that include major retailers, industrial applications and digital signage. We have been extremely proactive in seeking business with some of Australia’s largest corporations and have enjoyed success by delivering what we promise.”

His company is a fully integrated design and manufacturing facility that encompasses product design, engineering skills, advanced sheet metal fabrication and the latest multimaterial printing processes. It focuses on manufacturing diversity, flexibility and being super-competitive in delivery times. Having a team enables the operation to work closely with its customers from concept through development to manufacture and deliver on time. “When establishing the business, a key challenge was determining how to grow high-value sales of large volumes of diverse,

Mr Simmat continued: “On-time delivery and quality products are the prime requirement of major customers and we have geared our business accordingly. This means we are extremely reliant on having the most efficient machinery, together with the skills to extract maximum machine performance. “Our customers demand very tight delivery schedules. We often need to install new machinery to meet our contractual obligations. Under these circumstances, we can’t afford to wait weeks and months for new production equipment.

Daen Simmat, Black Lab Design CEO

“When we sign contracts to supply our goods, we have to be absolutely certain that promised delivery dates are realistic and achievable. Machinery suppliers like Amada Oceania who keep machines in stock locally are critical to our success. Liftco celebrates 30 years in business

Do ethics pay? Liftco Industrial Supplies’ success and growth says: “Yes”.

Liftco is a dedicated provider of safety devices to the Crane and Manufacturing industry, and is now celebrating its 30th year in business. It began in Ingleburn Western Sydney, but its warehouse and showroom are now based in Wollongong. According to Merilyn Glenn, founder and CEO of Liftco, the specialist importer and distribution business was established to fill the market gap that existed in Australia and New Zealand for the provision of reliable safety and electrification products for Cranes and Hoists. “The primary focus of our product

range is to improve safety protocols on overhead cranes,” she says. But these protocols not only help save life and limb, they also “help reduce repair and maintenance costs”. In the same way, Liftco has actively pursued inclusive employment practices. This pursuit has not only been ethically good, but it has also strengthened the business by enriching its workplace. One of the most memorable staff members was Matt, “a delightful young man who was completely deaf and spent many hours teaching the staff and management sign language”. Many of the staff have remained with the company for at least ten years or more. This continuity of staff contributes to the business’s fast

turnaround and lead times, and friendly, helpful customer service. “Our products have been created with simplicity and ease of use and have been tested in some of the harshest conditions. Whilst they may not always look as new, they work reliably to prevent overloading and sideways lifting and have kept the industry safe for 30 years,” says Merilyn. “Liftco products suit most types of applications for ropes and chain, cranes and hoists.”

The Liftco product range:

From left: Merilyn Glenn, Chris Stojanovski, Cantal Stojanovski and little Aria Stojanovsk (future CEO of Liftco?).

Load Limiters for wire rope and chain crane and hoists: Exceedingly popular protection from overloading of crane and support structures, easy to install, available for all capacity cranes, preset or easily calibrated onsite

Ultimate Limit Switch: Works in conjunction with the cranes' upper limit switch to cut out once the limiter gets to a designated point of the lift

• Side Pull Preventer: To eliminate dangerous and expensive side pulling. The device works on the angle of side pull on the rope.

Conductor Bar and C Track Systems: Designed to be easy to install and robust, can provide full system and design or individual components

Electronic Load Limiter: A new addition to the Liftco range, designed in combination with current transformers for load limitation on chain and wire rope hoists

Within the past 30 years, Liftco has been involved with various charity organisations, including Care Flight, Biggest Morning Tea, Relay for Life and Shave for a Cure, just to name a few. Merilyn says: “After 30 years, I am slowly moving towards retiring and handing over the reins to the younger members of the family who have taken on my work ethic and values. I’m confident that under their future management, Liftco will be supplying companies around Australia and New Zealand for a further 30 years.” Liftco Industrial Supplies Pty Ltd 02 98294411 www.liftco.com.au

Konecranes’ CraneQ keeps cranes on the straight and narrow To keep cranes on the straight and narrow, global cranes and lifting authority Konecranes is introducing its latest CraneQ Crane Geometric Survey, which accurately measures dimensional tolerances of wheels, end trucks, girders, and other components of the crane. Overhead cranes are workhorses of industry, lifting, shifting and moving heavy items around the clock. If the cranes stop, industry stops, so uptime is vital. Cranes that are straight, square and aligned properly experience lower repair

costs, optimum safety and superior levels of uptime and performance. “If cranes are wearing prematurely, positioning incorrectly, or making uncommon sounds, it’s often an alignment issue that’s causing the unnecessary wear on components,” says Mark Beckwith, Australian Service Operations Manager, Konecranes and Demag Pty Ltd (a member of the Konecranes Group). “A Konecranes CraneQ Crane Geometric Survey helps to find the root cause of any symptoms, to avoid major

problems and costly downtime,” he says. “CraneQ is applicable to all kinds of overhead cranes and particularly relevant to those in heavy duty industries such as steel, paper, manufacturing and mining, where cranes are subjected to harsher operating conditions and more demanding uses.” Konecranes 1300 937637 www.konecranes.com.au

Serpent & Dove - Applied Magnetics attracts drillers in a hole It takes a pretty “angry” magnet to recover several hundred kilos of steel from a borehole, or retrieve a broken drill bit from any other hole drilled into the earth. Fortunately, Serpent & Dove – Applied Magnetics has had plenty of experience in assisting drill operators in recovering such problem items from boreholes and shafts. Usually what is required is a permanent magnet

which does not weigh too much itself yet delivers a very strong, multi-poled face to the irregular shape of a piece of steel down a hole. Frequently the broken drill or other equipment is also embedded in mud or slime.

Serpent & Dove’s down-hole recovery magnets feature a deep-reaching, multi-pole, rare-earth neodymium magnet element encased in epoxy resin and with a robust, rated lifting eye.

Serpent & Dove has several down-hole magnets of various sizes, up to around 400 mm in diameter (capable of recovering up to 1,000 Kg), to answer urgent requirements. These are usually available off the shelf.

Lang Technik has a solution to challenging workholding requirements Any company that is involved with workpiece milling, has access to Lang Technik’s Makro-Grip technology, which provides a workholding solution to almost any clamping requirement, from raw material to the finished workpiece. The company has been responsible for numerous workholding innovations that reduce costly changeover time, reduce operator workload and maximise productivity. One of the many benefits of using Lang Technik products is their patented Quick Point zero-point clamping system. This allows for a one-time installation – once the base plate is mounted and aligned to the machine tool table and the zero point is defined, workpieces and fixtures can be built quickly and accurately. “The zero-point system provides a huge boost to productivity, reducing changeover time from 1-2 hours to around

five minutes,” said Dimac Managing Director Paul Fowler. Two recent additions to Lang’s respected Makro-Grip range of vices are the Makro-4 Grip and Makro-Grip Ultra. The Makro-4Grip allows Lang's stamping technology to now be used for round parts. The stamping is a patented form-closure technology which provides the highest holding power for five-face machining worldwide. Often referred to as pre-stamping, it involves the workpiece being stamped outside of the machine tool with up to 20 tonnes of hydraulic pressure. Clamping scenarios that require high holding power, no work stop in the machining area or where the danger of workpiece deformation exists, can be mastered with the stamping process. Makro-Grip stamping technology provides tremendous material savings due to minimal clamping edge requirements.

“Makro-Grip stamping technology provides tremendous material savings due to minimal clamping edge requirements; the new Makro-4 Grip means that any company that is involved with workpiece milling of round parts can now benefit from this technology easily and cost efficiently,“ said Mr Fowler. The Makro-4Grip system consists of universal stamping jaws including stamping inserts for individual positioning as well as matching clamping jaws suitable for all sizes of Makro-Grip vices. The jaws grip the pre-stamped part in four indentations at a clamping height of just 3mm and cover a clamping range from 36mm to

300mm. Dimac is Australia and New Zealand’s largest supplier of accessories and workholding solutions that optimise CNC machine productivity. In addition to LangTechnik, the company is the distributor of many leading brands that include Kitagawa power chucks, WTO toolholders, Freddy coolant recyclers, Reven air cleaners, Hydrafeed barfeeders and Royal’s RotaRack. Peristaltic pump puts paid to problems with sludge transfer

Teys Australia, one of the largest meat processors and exporters in Australia, was looking for a dependable solution for its DAF tank sludge and scum transfer at its plant in Beenleigh, Queensland. The company had used submersible pumps and double diaphragm pumps in the past, but with limited success. A Hydro Innovations pump specialist recommended the use of a Ragazzini peristaltic (hose) pump for the application. Ragazzini hose pumps are positive displacement pumps using a set of rollers to compress an elastomeric tube that pushes the fluid contained within it. This means that no mechanical moving parts are in contact with the fluid being pumped, and there are no valves or seals to ever replace. And because the pumps use rollers and not “shoes”, the casing does not need to be filled with an expensive lubricating fluid. Teys needed to transfer up to 10 cubic metres an hour of the sludge, so Hydro Innovations recommended the Ragazzini MS3 peristaltic pump with fully cast casing, cast iron rotor and castiron rollers.

The abattoir has been so happy with the installation, it has since rolled this new technology out to other branches around the country.

The pump needed only to run at the slow speed of 26 rpm to meet the duty, so the pump is expected to have a very long service life. It is also fitted as standard with a leak detector that instantly detects a damaged hose. The leak detector stops the pump and sends a warning signal. Pumps are mounted on stainless steel base

frames and are supplied with 316SS ports. The pump was duly ordered and installed. An operator at the plant commented that “it was easy to install and works very well, with little maintenance. A great feature is not having to fill the roller section with glycol, and the quiet operation of the pump,” he said.

Ragazzini pumps are available in sizes ranging from 10mm ports up to 150mm, with flows from 0.2 litres per hour up to 180 cubic metres per hour, with pressures to 15 bar. Various pump hose materials allow pumps to move abrasive fluids, corrosive fluids, fats, oils, along with FDA approved hoses for foods and pharmaceutical products.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY Canberra offers to help industry manufacture mRNA vaccines The Australian Government is offering to partner with industry so that the country has the opportunity to produce mRNA vaccines and, potentially, other therapeutic products, using this technology. In a joint announcement with Minister for Health Greg Hunt, newly appointed Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter said the Government was inviting key commercial providers and potential providers to demonstrate their future capability and explain what government involvement, assistance or support could make that capacity a reality. “We know that mRNA is an extremely promising branch of medical science and we know from work already undertaken that Australian businesses and researchers are developing mRNA capacity,” Minister Porter said. “However our market analysis also shows there are gaps and challenges to scale-up, which mean it’s not currently possible to commercially manufacture mRNA treatments locally.” He said the Government was taking a two-pronged approach to establishing this capability. “We are continuing negotiations with existing manufacturers while also

approaching the market for others that can potentially provide viable solutions. “This partnership approach will ultimately help us secure the best mRNA capability for Australians while delivering economic benefits, improving health outcomes for Australians and creating high paying jobs for the future.” He said that while mRNA vaccines were already a key pillar of the Government’s vaccine strategy, mRNA technology had the potential to treat many other diseases including cancer, the flu, and cardiovascular disease. “This approach to market builds on work already undertaken to understand Australia’s vaccine manufacturing capability, including a manufacturing audit undertaken last year and a business case. “Both these will provide a strong evidence base on which to assess proposals as we work to build capability here at home.”

onshore population scale mRNA capability; • demonstrated access to necessary intellectual property for manufacturing processes, technology transfer and production at scale; • capacity to make products available to the Australian Government as required and in priority over any other purchaser;

The Government is seeking proposals that will establish an end-to-end sustainable capability. Requirements that applicants will need to address include:

• the ability to deliver secure supply of population scale mRNA vaccines, including to scale up production to respond to reasonably foreseeable health emergencies and issues;

• the submission of fully costed proposals to establish an end-to-end

• the ability to deliver secure supply of other therapeutic mRNA based

treatments of a type and scale that may be needed to respond to the reasonably foreseeable health needs of the Australian community; • the sustainability of the facility over 10 years and an undertaking to maintain the capability onshore on an ongoing basis; • a commitment to collaborate and build and maintain working relationships with the Australian research community; and • opportunities for exporting vaccinations and treatments, both commercially and in support of our region, during any future health emergencies.

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY

Mental health to be tackled head on at Workplace Health & Safety Show The issue of mental health and wellbeing is a major concern for Australian workplaces. Around 91% of all workers’ compensation claims involving mental health disorders between 2010–11 and 2014–15, were related to work and mental stress, according to Safe Work Australia. The World Health Organization found that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$1 trillion each year in lost productivity. Mental health and wellbeing is misunderstood in today’s business world and employers are now searching for the best ways to respond and support employees’ mental health conditions. The upcoming Workplace Health & Safety Show (7-8 September 2021) at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park Homebush, promises to be more engaging than ever and aims to tackle the issue of mental health in the workplace head on. The event will include an array of live, proactive discussions, seminars, Q&As and an interactive two-way educative experience with more than 100 companies. Those attending will discover new supplier resources and technology, increase their knowledge and insights, and develop new connections. Particularly exciting will be a workshop on 'Practical approaches to managing psychosocial hazards in the workplace - a regulator's perspective', by Ian Firth, State Inspector, SafeWork NSW. During this workshop, Ian will delve into psychosocial hazards in the workplace, their challenges, and the practical approaches to managing risk. To give a more pragmatic outlook on the above concerns, Ian will also present

a People at Work Case Study that can prove beneficial for employers and managers. Samuel Eddy, Executive Wellness Coach, will lead an interactive seminar focusing on 'Powerful tools to improve workplace health, safety and productivity'. This seminar covers how employees can scale down their "stress temperature" to increase productivity alongside creating a safe and healthy workplace environment. The seminar not only focuses on theoretical beliefs, it provides a practical session for employers/managers to take away essential learnings for their organisation. Another interesting discussion taking place this year is that by John Toomey, Wellness Thought Leader, on 'The care equation in preventing mental health challenges'. This seminar highlights the importance of why we should address mental health issues and break the stigma of its mythical theory on a chemical imbalance in the brain. The discussion aims to bring forward how one can use effective prevention to help the community. 'Driving action to improve mental health at work in NSW – Towards 2022 and beyond' is a seminar led by Jim Kelly, Director of Health and Safe Design at SafeWork NSW. Jim will drive the discussion by underlining the regulatory perspective on workplace mental health and the intrinsic role leaders play in driving safety culture, and the precautionary and proactive measures companies can take to manage psychological hazards in the workplace. Attendees will get the opportunity to meet SafeWork NSW Inspectors:

Kevin Murphy, Ian Firth and Genevieve Fleming, all three collectively experienced in Building & Construction, Psychological Health, and Manufacturing. This Q&A feature will allow an interactive discussion targeting employers’/managers' related concerns regarding workplace health & safety. With the support of SafeWork NSW and the Australian Institute of Health and Safety, the Workplace Health & Safety Show is Australia’s paramount workplace health and safety event. The event guarantees a live,

intuitive two-way learning experience with an expo including more than 100 companies, proactive discussions and forums, driven by the industry’s best, and providing insight into everything from workplace mental wellbeing to creative new technologies and the consistently changing universe of workplace safety laws. Compliance attains a new standard of speed and ease: ISO 37301

Compliance applies across the full expanse of a workplace – from machinery prestart routines to facility environmental standards. The breadth of compliance means that businesses must create a compliance culture from top to bottom – and in that order: compliance starts from the top. It is tough to keep track of it all. That’s why businesses are turning to compliance management systems, in particular contemporary paperless ones. These compliance systems line up with industry standards such as ISO 37301, “Compliance Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance for Use”

38

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

from the International Organization for Standards. The standard is designed to cover all types of business, large and small. With ISO 37301, compliance management should become quicker and easier, without sacrificing quality compliance. Luckily for those wishing to modernise their compliance management systems, even those using the previous ISO 19600:2014 version of the standard, ISO 37301 is here to help. Paired with digital inspection solutions, the standard delivers a comprehensive package that sits along any other business inspection to transform performance and results.

Reducing waste is a significant goal with many organisations. It is important, therefore, that inspection and compliance be paperless. Key then is a digital platform upon which ISO 37301 can sit and work alongside. Inspection and compliance solutions have long helped businesses inspect safety in a facility, examine the asset lifecycle or conduct compliance checks. With dynamic checklists, corrective actions and simpler audit trails, paperless inspection solutions partner naturally with standards such as ISO 37301. By utilising smartphone and tablet capability, compliance inspection and audit trail management can be greatly

streamlined with high grade simple evidence. Compliance doesn’t have to be complicated ever again. Pervidi 03 8862 6485 pervidi.com.au JUNE / JULY 2021

WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY

Three things manufacturers have learned from a year of working remotely There has been extensive discussion of how office workers have adapted to the challenge of working from home (WFH), but the manufacturing sector has also embraced an increase in remote working, whether by design or necessity. Here, John Young, APAC sales director at automation parts supplier EU Automation, identifies the three major things the manufacturing sector has learned from a year of WFH. Having been forced to work remotely due to Covid-19 restrictions, many employees and companies are acknowledging that things will likely never return to the pre-pandemic status quo. In countries and sectors that have embraced high levels of automation, businesses can save money and employees can enjoy greater flexibility through hybrid models that mix working on site with more frequent and flexible remote working. However, the debate so far has focused mostly on office working. Here’s three key things manufacturers in the APAC region have learned from a year of working remotely.

Accelerating automation?

For office jobs, there is little doubt that a year of remote working has accelerated the uptake of digital technologies and automation. According to Teo Lay Lim, South Asia Market unit lead for Accenture, the pandemic has effectively consolidated 10 years of digital transformation efforts into a mere six months.

Remote condition monitoring

The possibility of remote working varies greatly in the manufacturing sector. One interesting area of development that has been given a fillip in the past year is technology that enables remote condition monitoring. Remote condition monitoring is the ability to view the performance, status and behaviour of a machine from a distance in real time. This is achieved with a combination of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and cloud computing that allows an on-site machine to be tracked by maintenance engineers wherever they are.

In manufacturing, the picture is less clear, but the early evidence suggests more manufacturers turning to automation. At the very least, the crisis has shone a spotlight on automation technologies and the benefits they can offer. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are one of many examples of technologies that have enjoyed a period of growth throughout the pandemic and look set to enjoy a strong uptake in many sectors, particularly food and beverage.

Cyber gaps exposed

Although digital transformations have allowed greater levels of remote working, they have also exposed cyber vulnerabilities. The manufacturing sector

is no different to others in this regard, but the stakes could potentially be greater. Just imagine the consequences of an industrial robot being hacked. One problem is employees using vulnerable devices when working remotely. A recent study from LogMeIn, found that globally 31% of people are using ‘vulnerable devices’ when working remotely and for the APAC region specifically, the figure was 45%. In another study from AT&T, which surveyed 500 IT decisionmakers in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, almost half the respondents said they anticipated the volume of cyber attacks to increase.

A U S TA RU A SL TI R AA

Having automated sensors removes some of the need for human intervention. The data gathered via these sensors can be accessed remotely via cloud services and data visualization tools allow engineers to identify and diagnose a fault while working from home. Using these solutions, maintenance engineers can order components from parts suppliers such as EU Automation. Many companies have learned a lot from WFH, and manufacturers are no exception. The challenge has encouraged the uptake of those technological solutions that reduce the need for human workers on site. However, manufacturers are also discovering that WFH is opening up greater cyber vulnerabilities and necessitating a more effective strategy to respond to this threat.

AUSTRALIAN MADE Entrepreneur, model, author and new mum Elyse Knowles kicked off the inaugural Australian Made Week at Gold Coast manufacturing business AlphaFit, urging shoppers to say ‘g’day’ to one extra locally made or grown product per week, to help boost the country’s economy over the next 12 months.

Australian Made Week brings home the benefits of buying local

Running from 24 May to 30 May 2021, Australian Made Week called on shoppers to actively focus their buying activities on genuine Aussie products carrying the trusted green-and-gold kangaroo logo. Australian Made Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro said Australian Made Week helped Australians to focus their attention on the benefits of buying local after a challenging year for many Australian businesses. “While Australia’s over-reliance on imported products has been highlighted in recent times, it has also brought into sharp focus the many benefits of buying Australian. As a result, there has been a significant increase in consumer appetite for Aussie products,” said Mr Lazzaro. “When you buy Australian Made, not only are you getting products made to some of the highest standards in the world, you create jobs, now and into the future, and support thousands of Australians throughout the supply chain. Australian Made Week was a great opportunity to celebrate all the great things we make and grow, and commit to reassessing our shopping habits and prioritising Aussie products on a more permanent basis.” According to recent Roy Morgan research, if every household spent an additional $10 a week on Australian Made products, it would inject an extra $5 billion

into the economy each year and create up to 11,000 new jobs. An achievable outcome, as 93% of Australians have a preference for Australian Made products. Australian Made licensee and thirdgeneration steel manufacturing business, AlphaFit officially launched the campaign at its Gold Coast factory. Co-founder of AlphaFit Bobby Montesalvo said Australian Made Week helped highlight Australia’s world-class manufacturing processes.

“When it comes to purchasing Australian made, you know that if you buy AlphaFit Australian equipment, it’s going to last,” said Mr Montesalvo. “We hope that we get more people to consider the flow-on effects of their purchasing decisions. When they buy Australianmade products, they’re supporting local businesses like AlphaFit and the people that work here.”

Planning materials handling ahead saves time and money “You’d be surprised how often I come to a plant to quote a job and, after being shown the brand new state-of-the-art multi-million-dollar facility with the latest and greatest machinery, am told that no one stopped to consider how items were going to be loaded into this great machinery,” says Tate McFarlane, Engineering Director at Bomac Engineering. “No one at the planning stage looked over the design of the facility and said ‘how are we going to get our items from A to B?’ Or they assumed that they would simply use a forklift or similar, only to realise the space being shared by people on foot and the vehicle will cause serious risk for injuries or accidents.”

McFarlane reckons that one of the great things about Bomac’s Altrac rail system is that in most cases he can design a system that works within the context of what’s already there. But that doesn’t always result in the most efficient workflow possible once it’s all up and running, especially when there is not

crane around the intended workflow to maximise efficiency. Money and time can also be saved on installation if the crane is being put into an empty plant instead of having to work around bulky machinery or storage racks. Once the crane is up, it is completely out of the way of the on-ground equipment so no further time delay or financial cost would be incurred by installing crane first, machinery second. “I urge anyone planning out a manufacturing, maintenance or even storage facility to first consider materials handling before looking at the more ‘exciting’ technology you’ll be implementing,” says McFarlane. “It may be that nothing is needed or you might

be set up in a way that a forklift really is the best solution. But if you find that a crane would be best, it’s much easier to integrate it from the beginning than to try and retro-fit it at the last minute.” Anyone thinking about moving, upgrading or building new facilities anywhere in Australia is welcome to contact the team at Bomac Engineering in advance to make sure lifting and shifting products won’t become a major headache when they should be celebrating their new facility instead. State of the art robotics helps Holloway keep jobs in Australia With its Minto location filled with an impressive mix of 3 and 6 axial stateof-the-art robots, Holloway Group embraced manufacturing automation when other businesses were moving operations offshore. The result, Group Managing Director Matt Holloway says, was a resounding affirmation of the company’s commitment to Australian made and a reinvestment into the business’s loyal and skilled workforce. The decision to mechanise elements of the manufacturing process was an easy one Holloway says, as it alleviated staff of repetitious or dangerous tasks; reducing workplace errors and associated injuries. New streamlined, automated processes were implemented, decreasing manufacturing lead times and increasing staff productivity. The investment into additional automation cells also afforded operations staff an opportunity to develop new skills sets and take on responsibilities in other areas of the business. “Offering staff career progression and skills pathways was a huge benefit for us. Staff attrition in operations is next to zero and our capabilities increased exponentially,” Holloway says. Outside of its proprietary range of products for hero brands A Plus Plastics, Ausdrain and Geohex, the company also manages high-volume custom moulding manufacturing for companies as committed to Australian

made as it is. The implementation of state-of-the-art, energy-efficient machinery equates to output that is scalable, without compromising product quality or staff safety. With the company’s machinery some of the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, Holloway Group’s ISO9001 certified facility will continue to grow to keep up with market demand for its end-to-end product manufacturing offer. Champions of Australian manufacturing, Holloway Group launched Bring it Home in late 2020, with the aim to bring business that had been moved offshore, back home to Australia. Holloway says Australianbased operations, re-shored or otherwise, add innumerable value to the long game of the country. “Our commitment to Australian made goes beyond a superior product or market offer, it means lower unemployment, higher living standards for families and better long-term outcomes for industry and the economy.” Holloway Group is supported by a team of more than 70 staff across operations, logistics, administration, and sales. Enmin’s Australian Made equipment offers the best return on investment

“Customisation is an important part of our business; depending on a customer’s requirement we can recommend either standard equipment components or design bespoke equipment,” Mr Gallaher added.

For more than 40 years, Victorian-based Enmin has been building custom vibratory and material handling solutions for myriad applications and environments. The company’s vast knowledge and expertise in this area has seen its list of customers grow to include most of Australia’s leading food industry manufacturers. Enmin’s range of product handling and vibratory equipment includes the revolutionary Mi-CON modular conveyor – the first hygienically designed full wash-down system to offer multiple standardised components – plus an extensive range of hopper feeders and screeners, spiral conveyors, conditioning conveyors and more. “All our products are designed and constructed first and foremost to meet the rigorous requirements of the food and pharmaceutical industries, such as maximum hygiene, ease of cleaning and the reliability essential to meet the demands of continuous 24/7 operation,” said Enmin General Manager Anthony Gallaher . Over the years, the company has earned an enviable reputation for designing and building equipment to the highest standards, using the finest materials to provide complete reliability and longevity. Supporting other local manufacturers is a priority for Enmin and the company currently buys 304 stainless steel, steel and plastic machined parts, castings, coils and electrical components as well as outsourcing its laser cutting, all domestically. Mr Gallaher sees several benefits to customers of purchasing Enmin’s

46

locally made equipment. These include the ability to offer individual design and customisation, expert local advice, consistency of supply and outstanding back-up and support. In many cases Enmin is the only Australian company manufacturing specific material handling components. “We are the only company manufacturing electromagnetic drives in Australia and our many years in application experience will ensure the right drive is nominated for the tray requirements and process,” he said. “Our equipment is designed to provide years of trouble-free operation with minimal moving parts, next to no on-going maintenance and, best of all, low energy consumption. All this ensures a reliable, low-cost method of product handling,” Mr Gallaher went on to say.

“A recent example was a requirement for a hopper feeder where the depositing system dictated a height that would be unergonomic for the production line staff to easily and safely access the storage hopper. Using our design expertise and state-of-the-art software, we designed a mobile unit with retractable operator steps. When not required, these steps can be folded out of the way quickly and with very little effort thanks to pressurised struts on each side,” Mr Gallaher said. “Another benefit of being a local manufacturer is being able to see firsthand a customer’s existing production line set-up to ensure our equipment will integrate seamlessly with other components already in place. We can ensure that mechanical components fit with minimal or no modifications and electrical interfaces are all talking to each other,” Mr Gallaher said. “There are many pieces of nonbranded equipment brought in

from overseas and these often need replacement parts; this is where our knowledge and expertise also comes into play to ensure that the right part is specified,” Mr Gallaher went on to say. “And of course, being a local manufacturer means we are only a quick phone call away to immediately respond to any customer query or provide service and parts support throughout Australia,” he added. Enmin also invests heavily in R&D to provide Australian manufacturers with the latest developments in materials handling solutions and improve production efficiencies. An example of this is Enmin’s design and development of a range of modular components. “The key benefit of modular components is that it eliminates equipment redundancy and expands with the customer’s business. It can be added to, extended and modified in the years ahead as a company’s production needs evolve,” said Mr Gallaher. “Whilst lower cost equipment from overseas may initially seem an attractive proposition, it is ultimately a false economy. In the long-term delivery turnaround, the ability to work closely with us during every phase of the project combined with the quality, reliability and opportunity to easily add to or modify years later as production needs change, far outweighs any price difference. In terms of return on investment, there is simply no comparison,” Mr Gallaher summed up. Enmin also has an extensive range of Industrial vibrators to suit any industry that handles bulk material. The ‘FlowEasy’ range is specifically designed to suit Australia’s environment and covers a multitude of applications, such as mining, quarrying and agriculture. Enmin 03 9800 6777 www.enmin.com.au

OMNIA wheels out innovative Plant Glider dolly for potted plants A stylish and innovative home-grown dolly for easily and safely moving potted plants has been launched by Newcastlebased manufacturer OMNIA (part of Rotacaster). The Plant Glider stands out because it employs the engineering company’s patented omni-wheel rather than caster wheels, doing away with issues such as poor load stability and poor directional control. It has a unique fixed, radial wheel design which ensures the dolly won’t roll away when unattended. However, when force is applied, the omni-wheel provides a stable and smooth move, comfortably traversing gaps and cracks, tiles and decking. The Plant Glider is made from plastic polymers and stainless steel, meaning that it won’t corrode or rot - a huge benefit for people living on or near the coast or in areas with harsh weather conditions. The glider has a minimalist aesthetic, helped by the fact that the wheels are hidden in the base.

Peter McKinnon, Managing Director of Omnia, is pleased with the end result. “We believe the Plant Glider will make an invaluable difference to people who take pride in their pot plants, not only from a functional perspective, but also in its aesthetic. It really does look great and compliments people’s pots rather than detracting from them - beautiful, useful and reliable.” The Plant Glider has been granted ‘Australian Made’ certification as it is entirely designed and manufactured at the company’s facilities, in Beresfield, NSW. Omnia is so confident in the products’ performance that it is offering buyers an extended three-year warranty. It is available in two load capacity sizes (50kg and 90kg) and in two colours; an off-white and a charcoal grey. OMNIA 1300 768 222 www.plantglider.com.au

LAPP’s EPIC connectors up with the stars in new screen role

Self-illuminating balloons have long been used by filmmakers for overhead lighting in night scenes. Unsurprisingly the critical criterion for these balloons is being low in weight. That’s where LAPP EPIC connectors are playing a starring role. The EPIC connectors have earned the trust of blberlin, a leading German supplier of the illuminating balloons, for their secure lightweight connection. The blberlin example proves the utility of LAPP EPIC connectors when “every gram counts”, said LAPP Australia General Manager Mr Simon Pullinger. “This impressive application shows the versatility of LAPP’s product range,” Mr Pullinger said. “EPIC’s lightweight design has a significant advantage. “The lightweight connectors are ideal for industrial applications and challenges where weight matters. LAPP EPIC power cable connectors are regularly used in plant engineering applications, servo drives and servo assemblies, but are broadly applicable to any application requiring a high quality, lightweight and compact solution.” Founder of blberlin, Fabian Friedrich, launched the company in 2001, after seeing the self-illuminating balloons used in France. After initially using imported equipment, he started creating his own balloons from 2006. Weight was always the critical constraint. Mr Friedrich’s electrician drew his attention to LAPP.

50

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

“We needed the smallest possible lightweight connector that allows high current loads and can fly as part of the balloon,” Mr Friedrich said.

“My electrician was familiar with LAPP. The advice from the local application engineer at LAPP was uncomplicated and we quickly found what we were looking for,” he said. “The EPIC Power LS1 industrial connector was chosen, and it is exceptionally robust against impacts and environmental influences.” Since then, Mr Friedrich has remained a loyal fan of LAPP's connection solutions. “The quality of the products and the service are great.” The balloons are made with a heliumtight and translucent special coating. Within each balloon is an electrical unit containing the illuminant. Everything is hermitically sealed with a plastic plate at base. This is where the EPIC Power LS1 enters stage. The ÖLFLEX ROBUST 210 power and control cables, which transmit 220 volts or even high-voltage power at 380 volts, play a critical supporting role to ensure a reliable downwards connection. The balloons are tailored to the specific requirements of the set. Sometimes the lighting balloons have to rise up to 80 metres. Precise calculations are essential. “For us, every gram counts,” Mr Friedrich said.

Large helium-filled balloons are used by filmmakers to provide even lighting for night scenes

Today blberlin has about 70 versions of the balloon and about the same number of different control units, with cables and connectors that can be installed in the balloons virtually “plug and play”. Many different potential combinations are available, so a solution suited to the specific requirement is usually ready to hand. Mr Friedrich considers a location at Lake Turkana in Kenya to be the site of his most interesting work. The movie, which was made a few years ago, depicts child soldiers and took about two and a half months to film. The filming required a balloon to float 80 metres above the edge of the lake. The company custom designed a helium balloon with a diameter of 5.5 metres and an output of 42,000 watts. “We developed our own prototype for the job and shipped it to Nairobi. We only had time to test it once, but thankfully everything worked,” Mr Friedrich said. Mr Friedrich only rarely encounters

film stars. When he does, it’s unintentional. On the Valkyrie film set in Berlin, he happened to stand next to Tom Cruise – but had no idea who it was. “My wife told me about it later on,” Mr Friedrich said with a smile. Although business contracted to almost nothing early in the pandemic, it rebounded strongly and is now back at full steam. The company has big plans. “In five years, we want to be the market leader for film balloons in Germany,” Mr Friedrich said. One of the exciting projects at the company is the development of LED balloons, which require connectors that are even more compact. And blberlin will once again be looking to LAPP.

CASE STUDY - HARE & FORBES

Spring Ridge Engineering apprentice Cody Burgess with the Jekran XM-W Waterjet.

Precision Jekran Waterjet gives Spring Ridge Engineering the edge Liverpool Plains on the north-western slopes of New South Wales is a highly productive agricultural area. There are broad acre crops such as wheat, corn and sorghum, while dry-land and irrigated cotton crops thrive in the rich soil. Sheep graze in the hills surrounding Spring Ridge and the Caroona and Killara cattle feedlots are significant contributors to the local economy. Machinery plays a major part in cultivation, seeding, weed control and harvesting. Critical tasks need to be performed often in narrow time windows and no farmer can afford to have a machine that is not being productive or is creating costly downtime. "In recent years growers have adopted new machines with advanced technology,” said Andrew Holland of Spring Ridge Engineering. His father, Chris, started the business around 40 years ago, originally manufacturing and supplying planting machines. “The transition to more automation has meant that Spring Ridge Engineering has moved from manufacturing machines to supplying parts and accessories, and fabrication of specialised components and engineering services to produce replacement parts and make repairs,” said Andrew. "Harvest time is extremely busy and no one can afford to wait longer than necessary to get a machine back in operation. The need for specialised fabricated parts has kept Spring Ridge Engineering very busy. The business needed a solution to quickly manufacture components, specialised implements and to reproduce high precision parts. "When it comes to cutting materials, a plasma cutter or oxyacetylene may be fast, but it is difficult to get the fine quality finish straight off the machine that is

JUNE / JULY 2021

needed for many precision components." Andrew said. "We found the right solution in a Jekran X-MW Series Waterjet which we installed in our factory towards the end of last year. Having the Jekran Waterjet gives us the flexibility we need to produce high precision components.” This versatile machine is capable of cutting virtually any material, including steel up to 100 millimetres thick. The fine finish on machined parts means the part can be taken right off the cutting table without any secondary finishing. While this cutting method may not be the fastest, it certainly gives the best precision. "The Jekran Waterjet is capable of delivering excellent results even for the most challenging jobs. The cold process means there is no molten-edge distortion. When we need to fabricate or replicate a critical part, it is now just a matter copying an existing component or creating a new piece by drawing up the task in a SolidWorks program and feed this into the machine’s controller,” said Andrew. “The Jekran Waterjet provides the critical link between our long experience, our resourcefulness and our engineering know-how to give us the edge we need. "This cutter has enabled us to be creative in helping us deliver the fast turnaround and high-quality solutions that our customers demand. The machine is easy to program and can be operated by an apprentice so our technical support team can spend more time in the field to help producers with their machinery issues. “The benefit to our business is a good quality job that can be charged out at a rate that will deliver us an acceptable profit margin and in a time frame that makes the customer happy,” concluded Andrew.

Jmar Engineering’s Founder and Managing Director Mark Hooper with the new Yawei fibre laser cutter.

Jmar expands capabilities and customer base with new Yawei investment

Based in Shepparton, Victoria, Jmar Engineering was founded by Mark and Janice Hooper and recently celebrated 25 years in business. Its ongoing success is based on a commitment to providing outstanding customer service, staying abreast of local trends, and ongoing diversification. Using precision turning and milling equipment, Jmar specialises in component manufacturing, repairs and maintenance across a broad range of industries. Their work typically includes a considerable amount of ‘reverse engineering’; fabricating components and parts that customers may have previously bought from overseas suppliers who often are now defunct or uncontactable due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to component manufacturing, the company has been a supplier to the agricultural industry for almost a quarter of a century, with a unique product called the Christopher Dairy Bails; a retrofit product suitable for herringbone dairies that allows the farmer to feed in the bail at milking time. Jmar has also invested heavily in 3D modelling, which has been a great sales tool as the company can now provide customers with an accurate representation of the concept design prior to actual full-scale production. Nearly all of Jmar’s business comes from around the Goulburn Valley area, within a 50km radius of Shepparton. Expanding its sheetmetal and cutting capabilities with a view to obtaining more

local work was what first prompted Mark Hooper to invest in a fibre laser, installed by Applied Machinery. “Our original laser proved a huge success in securing us heavier and more voluminous work and expanding our customer base – particularly those companies that had previously sent work to Jmar expands capabilities and customer base with new Yawei investment Based in Shepparton, Victoria, Jmar Engineering was founded by Mark and Janice Hooper and recently celebrated 25 years in business. says Hooper. “We ended up becoming a contract cutter and it was this that prompted us to invest in an additional Yawei fibre laser. We were struggling to keep up with the work and we couldn’t afford to let our customers down; this second machine ensured we could always offer consistency of supply and maintain our lead times.” With its 4kW capacity, a Precitec auto-focus cutting head and a Siemens CNC controller, the Yawei HLF has also provided Jmar with a huge increase cutting speed, material capacity and quality of cut. This improvement in laser cut parts feeding into the company’s seven-axis Yawei press brake means the quality of the finished product is far superior, particularly with stainless steel.

“When it comes to comparing the two machines, the new Yawei 4kW HLF is so much better,” adds Hooper. “It really is chalk and cheese.” The Yawei’s additional capacity and high-quality cut has allowed the company to fabricate a more diverse range of sheetmetal products that simply wasn’t possible before. One of these is a customdesigned, all stainless-steel evaporative air conditioner that is being manufactured for a local commercial kitchen builder. “We’re seeing work that we would never have seen before and quoting on jobs that we have previously not been able to quote on,” Hooper adds. “The new Yawei fibre laser is really transforming and expanding our business. “Like our previous dealings with Applied, the service was just outstanding with the purchase of the Yawei. Every

call to Service Manager Matt Keogh and Service Engineer Mark Bury was answered quickly, every technical question was responded to; I couldn’t have asked for a better association with a machinery supplier. Given our regional location, the quality and speed of service is absolutely critical to us and something we value greatly. It’s so refreshing to know that Applied really have got our back.” Hooper is optimistic about the outlook for manufacturing in Australia as the country recovers from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 crisis. “Once we’re through the COVID-19 crisis, I think there’s going to be renewed interest in sourcing locally manufactured parts and components,” he explains. “There’s certainly a realisation that whilswe may be a little more expensive, the quality of the local producand personal attention we can provide is

something overseas suppliers cannot match. The fact that we’ve had to rebuild so many overseas-sourced parts is confirmation of that. “This new fibre laser not only allows us to produce the highest-quality products in a faster time, but also provides us with the opportunity to add to the diversity of products we produce. see a very positive outlook not just for us, but for all Australian manufacturers over the next few years.” Reproduced from AMT magazine, www.amtil.com.au Applied Machinery 03 9706 8066 www.appliedmachinery.com.au

AMW 2022 to start on International Women’s Day The Australian Manufacturing Week 2022 event will open on the day women around the world are recognised for their contribution to society - on International Women’s Day, March 8. AMW 2022 organisers Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Ltd (AMTIL) said the “happy coincidence” of these big events, will be marked with the recognition of women’s contribution to Australian manufacturing.

Thursday 10 March: Research & Innovation

Friday 11 March: A Celebration of Australian Manufacturing

The opening day will kick off with a line-up of female speakers on the Future Solutions Stage. The event will also be preceded by a Women in Manufacturing networking breakfast.

For the second day of the show, the Future Solutions Stage will be devoted to additive manufacturing, with Unlimit3D returning after its launch at AMTIL’s Austech exhibition in 2019.

Kim Banks, AMW Exhibition Manager and Head of Events at AMTIL said: “We’re working on a great program aimed at celebrating the achievements of women in this industry, and perhaps inspiring a next generation of younger women to consider manufacturing as a career.”

Under the theme ‘Strengthening and Securing Australian Supply Chains’, and with generous support from the event’s major sponsor, Amiga Engineering, Unlimit3D will next year take place right at the heart of the AMW exhibition and will be open to all.

Quasar tackles quandary of satellite management Newly launched space startup Quasar Satellite Technologies is set to revolutionise space communications, using radio telescope technology developed by the CSIRO.

have a way to call home efficiently.” CSIRO commercialisation specialist and a founding Director of Quasar, Dr Ilana Feain, said bringing together state of the art technology, private investment and industry expertise gave Quasar a strong head start.

With more than 57,000 satellites set to be launched by the end of the decade, Quasar is creating a world-leading ground station service capable of communicating with hundreds of satellites simultaneously, instead of the one-to-one transmissions ground stations are capable of today. Quasar is backed by $12 million in funding, technology and industry expertise from CSIRO, Main Sequence, the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, and Australian companies Vocus, Saber Astronautics, Fleet Space Technologies, and Clearbox Systems. Quasar will look to capitalise on the US$130 billion satellite ground communications market, using technology developed by CSIRO for radio telescopes like its own ASKAP telescope in Western Australia. CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said after helping receive images of humans on the Moon 50 years ago, the commercialisation of this breakthrough research would now help put more Australians into new jobs in the growing space industry. “CSIRO has been a leader in radio astronomy and spacecraft communications

“CSIRO’s phased array technology revolutionised radio astronomy by enabling ASKAP to see enormous portions of the sky at once – about 30 times the area that conventional telescopes could see,” Dr Feain said.

like BigPond and Vividwireless, said the technology would enable new satellitebased business models and opportunities previously hindered by legacy ground station technology.

“CSIRO’s technology breakthrough enabled the world to connect without wires using fast Wi-Fi, and now our technology will help connect satellites using our breakthrough phased array technology.”

“Space is the highway of the stars, but current ground station technology is the equivalent of one-lane on-ramps,” Mr Ridley said.

Quasar CEO Phil Ridley, a telecommunications veteran behind some of Australia’s pioneering internet services

“By making it possible to communicate with hundreds of satellites simultaneously, we’ll be able to ensure the thousands of satellites launching over the next decade

“I’m excited to see the next evolution of this technology empower satellite businesses and their downstream industries.” Quasar will offer the technology ‘as a service’, enabling commercial and public sector partners to access data from satellites in low, medium and geostationary orbit from anywhere in the world, in the same way many cloud computing services work today. Quasar is building the technology using an Australian-based team with expertise and research support from CSIRO. Quasar Satellite Technologies www.quasarsat.com JUNE / JULY 2021

Manufacturing skills qualifications get biggest update in decade

Skills qualifications in manufacturing trades have undergone their biggest update in a decade, with the intention of developing a more productive workforce and one which has the skills required by today’s jobs. Developed by the Manufacturing and Engineering Industry Reference Committee, supported by skills service organisation IBSA Manufacturing, the updates come at a time of critical skills shortages around the country. They highlight the importance of having industry-relevant training packages and recognised qualifications. Eighteen updated qualifications are now available, 13 specifically designed for apprenticeships. This is the first in a series of updates to manufacturing engineering qualifications. The update has been a complex

process of analysis and consultation conducted by the committee. It included consultation with employers, employees, training providers and governments across the country to ensure that the qualifications and the skills they represent provide the most benefit to workers and their employers.

Kristian Stratton, newly elected chair of the committee, said: “The qualifications represent some of the critical trades that support Australian industry’s competitiveness and our sovereign capability. Their importance is underlined by the strong engagement shown by interested parties and all levels of governments over the course of several years.” He added: “This marks a big step in ensuring our trade apprentices will be better equipped with the skills they

need for today’s workforce. We will be releasing further significant updates to manufacturing qualifications over the coming months.”

the updates and improvements to 13 critical trades qualifications such as boiler making, fitting and machining, and blacksmithing.

The timeliness of finalising these updated trade qualifications and apprenticeships to the Australian economy was reaffirmed by employers through the recent Developing Modern Manufacturing through a Skilled Workforce collaboration series hosted by IBSA. Apprenticeships were described as the bedrock of the Australian economy.

The previous chair of the committee, Ian Curry, has been elected to the deputy chair role to continue supporting the progress of manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

The announcement of the updates represents the finalisation of release two of the Manufacturing and Engineering (MEM) Training Package, which includes

The Industry Reference Committee and IBSA will hold a series of online and inperson stakeholder engagement activities to support the roll-out the qualifications. For more information go to training.gov.au or contact IBSA at www.ibsa.org.au

Toward a skilled manufacturing industry Manufacturers, union leaders and peak bodies identified skills development priorities essential to building sovereign capability and economic growth in a report presented to the Federal Government in May. The report, Scaling Up. Developing Modern Manufacturing Through a Skilled Workforce, was the result of extensive national industry engagement by not-for-

profit workforce skills organisation The IBSA Group. “I would like to thank IBSA Group for the work that has led to the Developing Modern Manufacturing through a Skilled Workforce Report,’’ said Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart Robert. IBSA Group CEO Sharon Robertson said there was strong and clear consensus

from manufacturers, training organisations, peak bodies and unions operating within the sector of the need to provide more work-based learning and apprenticeship training opportunities that create pathways to higher skills development. “To build sovereign manufacturing capability in the post-Covid era, industry wants a workforce skilled in product development, new technologies, design

and prototyping, along with gaining efficiencies through sustainability and collaborative skills,’’ Ms Robertson said. “The clear need for the development of advanced skills from the platform of work-based learning was identified. One of the key recommendations of the report is greater recognition of apprenticeships as pathways to higher qualifications and higher learning,’’ Ms Robertson said.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Only 30% of manufacturing workers optimistic about future – well below national average of 80%

A survey has found that while four out of five of Australian workers feel optimistic about the next five years, only 30% of those in manufacturing feel the same way. It also found that 10% of Australian manufacturing workers reported losing their jobs last year.

The findings were based on a global survey of more than 32,000 workers by the ADP Research Institute in November and December last year. They were reported in The People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce View. The survey, which included 1,902 Australians from all industries, explored whether the effects of the pandemic affected employees’ attitudes towards the current world of work and what they expect and hope for in the workplace of the future. According to the report, three quarters of working Australians felt uncertainty over their job security during the pandemic and more than half were affected professionally by Covid. A quarter of all respondents were laid off (8%), furloughed (6%) or temporarily laid off (11%) by the same employer. In respect of manufacturing, the figures were •

Lost a job – 10%

Furloughed – 3%

Temporarily laid off by same employer – 11%.

Of those people who lost their jobs, 17% were in the leisure and hospitality industry, followed by IT/telecoms (11%) and manufacturing. Workers in transportation and warehousing were the most secure, with only 4% being laid off, followed by 5% working in construction and 6% in education and healthcare.

pessimistic for the future, with only 42%, 36% and 30% respectively saying they feel optimistic for the next five years in the workplace. Those living in Tasmania and Northern Territory are the least optimistic for the five years ahead, with almost a third (31% and 27% respectively) saying they’re not feeling optimistic for the next five years in the workplace, compared to the national average of 21%. When asked about the affects of Covid-19 on their work in the next three years, more respondents said they expected it to have a positive impact in the areas of skill development, flexibility at work, the way they do their work and work-

life balance. Only in their ability to find a job or financial security, did they expect it to have a negative impact. Peter Hadley, President - APAC at ADP, commented: “This new data from ADP tells us that Australians really felt the pressures falling out from the Covid-19 pandemic. “Although many people have been hard hit professionally, there’s a sense that what has been a dark could have a silver lining in various ways when it comes to the world of work. Particularly in terms of accelerating the shift towards flexible working patterns, with two in five Australians saying they believe Covid-19 has had a positive impact here.”

He said that understandably, job or financial security was front of mind for many, and these concerns unfortunately reflected reality. “In a year when many businesses have had to shut temporarily or permanently, or significantly alter their operations, the effects of the disruption and uncertainty on the workforce have been profound,” said Mr Hadley. “The challenge now for employers and HR teams is to find ways to harness the positives while, as far as possible, alleviating the negatives to ensure that staff stay upbeat, motivated and empowered to do well moving forward.”

When it came to furlough, real estate workers were the hardest hit, with 13% in this industry saying they were “sent home” at some point last year. This was followed by 9% in IT/telecoms and 8% in hospitality and leisure. Hospitality and leisure workers were most impacted by temporary layoffs from their employers, with 19% affected, followed by 14% of construction workers and 12% of finance workers. Industries which feel most hopeful for the next five years in the workplace are IT/ telecoms, construction and finance, with 85%, 85% and 83% respectively saying they feel quite or very optimistic for the next five years in the workplace. Workers in the real estate, media and manufacturing industries were the most

Selling conversations, the key to the future by Justin Roff-Marsh Assuming that a business has a compelling product (or service), and the ability to execute flawlessly, then growth should be simple. All that business must do is out-communicate its competitors! Now, some communication can be automated. Advertising, online activities and the like. But once mass communication hits diminishing returns, direct outreach is often required. Salespeople, in other words. Once a business reaches that point, it will maximise growth by ensuring that its sales team participates in more selling conversations than its competitors’ teams do, when adjusted for market share. Note, what moves the needle here is selling conversations. Not salespeople. If a business wants to participate in more than its fair share of selling conversations, it has two choices. Hire more salespeople. Or, figure out how to get its existing sales team to perform more selling conversations. The latter is where the true potential

is. A typical salesperson spends only a tiny percentage (single digits) of their time engaged in selling conversations. The balance of their time is dedicated to customer service, administration, prospecting, project management, and the like. The key to get salespeople selling then, is to remove ALL responsibilities other than selling conversations. This requires upgrades to other organisational functions to take over these responsibilities from sales: customer service, marketing and engineering. The good news it turns out that customers want to communicate online and by phone to the maximum possible extent. Even where major deals are concerned, video conferences are almost always a better alternative than face-to-face visits. Of course, a few critical activities do still need to occur in the field: and that’s fine. This fundamental change in market dynamics requires that we make an ideological shift. The salesperson’s pragmatism won’t cut it. We need to embrace this change and recognise that,

today, sales is essentially an inside activity supported by discrete field activities on an as-needed basis. The good news is that this new, insideout approach to sales enables you to exploit economies of scale. Running a large field sales team is incredibly expensive (on a per-sellingconversation basis) relative to inside sales. An inside salesperson can have up to 30 meaningful selling conversations a day, where a field salesperson will work hard to average 4 meetings. Moreover, if you insist all sales interactions are held with a field salesperson, you are turning your back on selling conversations that you could have had but will not have if you insist that each prospect accepts a field visit. This is a critical point! It’s easy for sales managers to argue (as they do) that field meetings are more effective than phone conversations. However, this argument ignores the fact that, an insistence on field meetings results in salespeople having fewer selling conversations overall.

Wage rise stimulus arguments 'don’t add up' The peak national employer organisation representing business has rejected arguments that an increase in the minimum wage would have a similar positive effect on the economy as government stimulus payments. "This argument has substantial flaws and should not be accepted by the Expert Panel of the Fair Work Commission,” said Innes Willox, Group Chief Executive of the Ai Group. Mr Willox made these comments in his organisation’s second submission to this year’s Annual Wage Review, in which

he also argued for a delay in the operative date for any potential pay increase for employers in distressed sectors "Unlike stimulus payments, rises in minimum wages are paid by businesses and other employers and therefore involve a diversion of money from employers to those households which receive higher wages because of the minimum wage decision,” continued Mr Willox. "Because there is no additional money injected into the economy from an increase in minimum wages, there is no comparability between stimulus

payments made by governments and rises in minimum wages. One is stimulus; the other is a transfer within the economy. They are chalk and cheese. "We also propose a delayed operative date of 1 September 2021 for any wage increase in Group 2 awards. Last year, the minimum wage increase for these awards was delayed by four months. This year, we propose a delay of two months. This would facilitate a smooth transition to a 1 July operative date for any minimum wage increase next year, if there are no ongoing 'exceptional circumstances'.”

CSIRO leads top Aussie researchers in global partnership for low-emissions power The CSIRO is drawing together leading energy research organisations as part of a global research push to decarbonise electricity systems. The partnership brings CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) together with University of Melbourne, RMIT University and global consultancy Stratagen. The partnership will comprise the Australian contingent of the Global

Power System Transformation (G-PST) consortium, an international group of electricity system operators collaborating with leading researchers to speed up the shift to low-emission, cost-effective and reliable power systems. The assembly of these researchers and electricity system operators marks an important step towards permanently reducing emissions trajectories, while at

the same time improving the reliability, resilience and security of the grid. Dr John Ward, Research Director of CSIRO’s Energy Systems Research Program, said that the energy sector is “a central tenant of our net zero future”. He said that CSIRO and AEMO would draw on their experience in research-industry collaborations to lead the Australian contribution to the global effort. The energy sector “accounts for 54 per cent of Australia’s emissions,” said Dr Ward. He also said it “has the most mature range of low emission technology options for immediate and long-term opportunities”. “The cost of renewable energy is no longer our major challenge – integrating this energy efficiently into our electricity systems is what we need to solve.” The challenges facing industry are broad. They include solving technical issues, enhancing workforce training and developing new real-time operational tools. Collaboration is the best way to deal with these issues. CSIRO will act as the Australian research coordinator, as well as contribute directly to the research. The agency will ensure that Australian universities work hand-in-hand with industry, so that research is targeted to our country’s practical needs. Australian industry also stands to gain from the research contributions of other countries shared under G-PST, while our researchers will benefit from global exposure.

62

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

The CSIRO-led partnership will commence with a focus on developing Australian research plans in line with the G-PST research agenda. Target themes include quantifying technical requirements of future power systems for reliability and cost-efficiency, and investigating opportunities relating to Australia’s rooftop solar uptake – which is near the global frontier. Research plans will include a focus on inverter designs and power system stability tools, as well as the restoration of electricity systems with 100 per cent renewable energy. The collaboration is expected to expand to include more top Australian research organisations. Australia has critical advantages in developing power systems thanks its world-leading uptake of renewables, said AEMO Chief Operations Officer Michael Gatt. “Australia is at the forefront of the global energy switch to inverter-based renewable energy, allowing us to provide a unique perspective to develop the power systems of the future,” Mr Gatt said. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Australia’s leading science agency, CSIRO, and researchers to address emerging challenges as we transition to a low emissions future energy system."

Business and Health Thoughts The lost opportunity of a millennium By Frank Ferrara Entrepreneur / Director of Cornick Pty Ltd

Global leaders have missed the rare opportunity to vastly improve the health of people all over the world. The pandemic has grabbed the attention of the global population and provided authorities with the platform to communicate preventative health information to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, they have overlooked this opportunity to communicate knowledge and potentially save lives. In this crazy age of Covid-19, we are told to wash our hands, maintain social distancing, and wear masks. We are required to record our presence in public areas, shops, restaurants and at sporting events. These are important measures, but they do not provide any advice for healthier living. Unfortunately, the things being promoted are mask-wearing and selfisolation – far from pro-active solutions. Apart from vaccinations, which have proven difficult to roll out and track, no clear and certain plan for combating Covid-19 has been put forward by world experts. This is why, as a business owner of 44 years, I say I have never seen a greater marketing opportunity lost, than that surrounding Covid-19. When everybody is listening to what you have got to say, say something useful. The useful message to be heard by everybody is simple; live better. As business owner in the technology industry and distributor of Italian food

JUNE / JULY 2021

and beverages, I find that nothing has been achieved to improve the health and wellbeing habits of the general public. No authority – scientific, medical or government – has put forward the case of healthy living to minimise the possibility of being affected by Covid-19.

to safeguard yourself against Covid-19. Smoking reduces the availability of vitamin C in the body. Vitamin C is usually involved in the body’s immune response, but when smoking, it is instead utilised for tissue repair, collagen synthesis and wound healing.

Ask yourself:

To alleviate this, you must eat foods high in vitamin C and possibly take supplemental vitamin C to counteract the effects. High vitamin C intake and cutting out smoking will improve your immune response immeasurably.

Has anyone in the past 15 months given me advice on how I can stay healthy? Has anyone given me simple advice on how to eat and drink well or how much alcohol is safe to drink? Has there been any discussion of how to get a great night’s sleep? Or what exercises are best for my body?

Have you heard any of this lifestyle advice that you can use, so if you are unlucky enough to contract Covid-19, you can easily overcome it? Here are things you can do to improve your health:

Stop smoking

This is a no-brainer, but it is one of the most important things you can do

Practice moderation

The worst part about drinking alcohol is its impact on sleep. The two do not mix and just because alcohol may be able to put you to sleep, it certainly does not mean you get a good night’s rest. So cut it out. If you must drink, do not drink after dark. This impacts your circadian rhythm and prevents your body from recovering properly, leaving you open to infection. While drinking alcohol in the daytime is not ideal, it has less chance of affecting your sleep. People that do drink frequently are far more likely to get

pneumonia or respiratory syndromes, as well as cancers and liver diseases.

Eat a Mediterranean diet

There is compelling evidence that the Mediterranean diet is best to keep you healthy. This diet typically involves increased consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, extra virgin olive oil, fish and low consumption of red meat and dairy products that are high in saturated fats. Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet can help you live longer, with reduced incidence of many diseases, reduced inflammation and reduced overall frailty as you age. This is because the Mediterranean diet is full of foods containing high concentrations of compounds called polyphenols (pronounced ‘Poh-Lee-Feh-Nuhls’). Polyphenols are micronutrients that have antioxidant and, in some cases, anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help them absorb oxygen free radicals, which can otherwise cause degenerative diseases that are the major killers in Western society – such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. In addition to protecting from diseases, polyphenols also help protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation, reduce brain degeneration and reduce the signs of aging. Stay healthy and be great.

Hydraulink Jim Read Racing dragster wins Nitro Thunder event with ‘best under pressure’ race The Hydraulink-sponsored Jim Read Racing team has added another trophy to its cabinet with a dramatic win at the 2021 Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder event. The Hydraulink top fuel dragster, driven by Jim Read’s son Phil, came up against experienced drag racer Peter Xiberras in the final. Xiberras had consecutively beaten two personal bests in the lead-up to the final, achieving 3.797/315MPH (about 507 km/h) and was looking unstoppable. In a last-minute twist, both cars rattled the tyres out of the gate and had to frantically pedal to the finish line, with Read getting the upper hand, in what he described as a “Stephen Bradbury style victory”. The event was the penultimate round of the 400 Thunder championship for all brackets ahead of next month’s Winternationals, and after a tough year full of Covid disruptions, Phil Read was delighted to be back out on the track.

The last race with Peter Xibberas just showed how much both of us wanted the win, and I’m glad I could do it for the Hydraulink franchisees,” he said. Hydraulink Australian National Franchise Manager Wayne Abbott said: “Hydraulink had 40 people, including franchisees and customers, witness Jim Read Racing’s dramatic win. They learnt a lot about how the Hydraulink Top Fuel Dragster team works together. The Jim Read Racing team performed ‘Best Under Pressure’, just like the Hydraulink franchisees do when it comes to fast and reliable 24/7 mobile hydraulic hose and fitting repairs. The event spectators included mechanics from the automotive, diesel and heavy plant industries who typically make outstanding franchisees within the Hydraulink network. Hydraulink is expanding its network of more than 400 service points throughout Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and the Western United States, drawing interest from areas as diverse as Kalgoorlie in the goldfields of Western Australia, the Marlborough vineyards of New Zealand, and the rapidly expanding site of Sydney’s second new airport at Badgery’s Creek, which, by itself, will create tens of thousands of jobs and involve massive infrastructure, earthworks, roads, transport and heavy machinery demand. Covid has made many people think more about securing their future financial independence. “Owning a franchise

where you can be your own boss, and where you’re backed by the resources and support of the Hydraulink network is highly appealing to people with mechanical aptitude and ambition for success,” says Mr Abbott. “Familiarity with a broad range of machinery, from agricultural to earthmoving to road and civil, to forestry and more is certainly an advantage, but we’re looking particularly for motivated, ambitious individuals with strong ethics. We can always teach the right people the right skills,” he said. Velisha Farms sews the seeds of safety By David Sligar

the “most dangerous industries.”

A leading grower and producer of premium vegetables in Australia, Velisha Farms has long been a class act in business and the community. It should come as no surprise then that Managing Director, Catherine Velisha, has stepped up to become a safety ambassador for Worksafe Victoria.

At its Werribee South headquarters, Velisha Farms runs a large packaging facility, co-located with a farm for broccoli, cauliflower and iceberg lettuce. The firm also grows zucchini, brassicas, kale, coriander, parsley and celery at other locations around Australia.

Ms Velisha follows in a long family tradition. Her grandfather and his brothers set up in the industry in 1949, starting as dairy farmers. After moving into horticulture, they became one of Australia’s first exporters of cauliflower and broccoli. Ms Velisha is well placed to advise on a broad range of safety matters as the business spans both packaging and agriculture, which she describes as one of

“We obviously have a packing facility which is lots of machinery, of moving parts, lots of people,” Ms Velisha said. “On a farm, you’ve obviously got really dangerous equipment like tractors and harvesters.”

and efficiently as you can. So we see it as a benefit to our business, not a cost.” And Ms Velisha should know. She has been surrounded by farming her whole life, even before entering the family business at 19. There has been tremendous change in farming, she said, particularly in terms of professionalisation and safety.

One of Ms Velisha’s strong beliefs is that “good safety is good business”.

But Velisha lists “fear” as one of the factors that can slow the evolution. It’s human nature to stick to existing ways of doing things. However, she believes that peer education between businesses at different stages of the journey can play a crucial role.

“It’s a benefit to productivity because when you’re constantly looking at your processes and your people, what it does is make sure you’re running as effectively

“What we need to do is help other businesses have access to people who will help then, and meet them where they are,” she said.

“It’s education, it’s giving that approachable, understandable, real life knowledge to people so they can implement.” To this end, Ms Velisha has united with Worksafe Victoria, which aims to promote high standards of safety and to provide insurance protection to businesses for workers. “There’s people out there that want to help you; make sure you educate yourself and your people to help build capacity.” Her safety promotion comes on top of a busy schedule. Velisha Farms employs around 70 people and sells to wholesalers, supermarkets and major retailers, while exporting to Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia.

Thermal flow switch helps keep AMS Instrumentation & Calibration Pty Ltd Analytical Process Division tunnels safely ventilated Powerful fans are used to ventilate rail and road tunnels, but which direction should they be blowing in and how strong should the airflow be? That’s where a thermal flow switch such as the FLT93S from Fluid Components International (FCI) comes into the picture. Supplied by AMS Instrumentation & Calibration, it helps manufacturers of powerful industrial fans and blowers used in the transportation industry to obtain accurate airflow control data under variable vehicle traffic conditions. Proper tunnel ventilation is critical to maintain tunnel temperatures within acceptable limits and to help control the flow of fresh air to prevent unhealthy toxic carbon monoxide (CO) exposure, as well as smoke or gas in the case of fire or other emergencies. Depending upon a tunnel ventilation

system’s design, the airflow fans must operate in either a forward or reverse airflow configuration. For example, during emergencies requiring air, gas or smoke evacuation, a flow switch such as the FCI Model FLT93S needs to detect forward or reverse fan airflow to prove air is blown into or extracted from a tunnel where vehicle drivers and emergency responders can be either trapped or at work. The versatile FLT93S Thermal Flow Switch can be configured with a uni-directional shroud to help verify the airflow direction of each tunnel fan. FCI developed this special shroud for the FLT93S Switch, which allows the detection of airflow from a single direction. By installing two flow switches per fan, engineers and operating technicians are able to verify with confidence the direction of airflow for each fan in a tunnel.

The FLT93S Thermal Flow Switch is suitable for placement in tunnel ducts or fan casings up to 2.4 metres in diameter. It can detect airflow ranges from 0.08 to 37 NMPS with flow accuracy as precise as ±2% of the setpoint velocity over a ±28°C temperature range; repeatability is ±0.5% reading. Flow elements are Oxygen Analysers, available for operation and survival (in the Thermal Conductivity case Analysers, of adverse conditions) for process NDIR Analysers, Multigas temperatures up to either 260°C or Analysers, OEM Analysers 454°C.

Konecranes' new app to help crane operators Konecranes is launching an app to help crane operators with their daily pre-shift and pre-lift inspections. CheckApp has been designed to help crane users quickly and easily record their findings. These pre-start inspections are part of the owners’ manual documentation of every crane and hoist, but Konecranes realised that thick paper manuals were not the most efficient way to conduct daily inspections. A lot of countries also require these pre-start inspections to be done as a matter of code compliance. “CheckApp was conceived as a great way to deliver an effective inspection format direct to any crane operator. Being electronic, it also becomes an accessible permanent record, unlike paper, which can be lost or misplaced,” said Mr John Jackman, Modernisation and Light Lifting Sales Manager, Konecranes and Demag. Mr Jackman was part of a team that developed the idea for CheckApp. The idea for this clever new app was the winning submission from a Konecranes global innovation contest.

Inspection template

“Almost everyone has a mobile device of some kind. Using electronic technology allows us to not only provide a quality, convenient inspection template, but also allows us to build in additional reference for those learning to do inspections properly,” he said. “In a practical sense, one of the most important functions the CheckApp achieves is that it improves the communication between a person identifying a fault and the repair of that fault by maintenance,” says Mr Jackman. “No one wants an operator using a crane with a potentially dangerous fault condition.” “I’m delighted to see the app ready for release. It’s a cost-effective way for

68

INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU

customers to record and retrieve daily inspection data that can be used for internal auditing and compliance,” said Mr Jackman. “The app supports Konecranes Service’s mission to provide smart technology and a digitally-enabled customer experience to improve the safety, productivity and sustainability of our customers’ operations,” he said. The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple AppStore and from Google Play for Android devices.

Daily Inspections

A daily inspection is a user’s – or crane operator’s – own assessment of the condition of an asset and environment for safe use. It is not an expert’s examination of the condition of an asset or component. Konecranes CheckApp for Daily Inspections follows the guidance set in the ISO 9927 standard and in applicable statutory regulations.

Daily inspection records are accessible on the yourKONECRANES customer portal where, combined with maintenance history and condition data collected from selected components with TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring, customers get a comprehensive view of the condition of their assets in one easily accessible place. This data assists in planning maintenance actions and provides an audit trail of performed daily inspections.

Deficiencies

The Daily Inspection view in yourKONECRANES shows daily inspection details as well as useful summary views. Daily inspection details – revealing who performed the inspection, when it was performed, what deficiencies were reported – are accessible through the activity, overview and asset fleet views. A detailed summary for the selected timeframe is provided in the Business Review tab.

Benefits include:

· Satisfies regulatory requirements helping businesses stay compliant · Allows for easy and reliable auditing of performed daily inspections · Easy-to-use mobile app can help motivate users to perform daily inspections on a regular basis · Assists with timely recognition of potential asset-specific safety or production risk issues · Assists in identifying workplace improvement opportunities · Assists in identifying needs for operator training as well as deviations in following local safety and other site rules Konecranes 1300 937637 www.konecranes.com.au

High efficiency grit removal showcased at water conference

Independently tested grit removal technology that achieves 95% efficiency down to 105 microns over 10:1 turndown was introduced to the annual conference of the Queensland branch of the Water Industry Operators Association in Toowoomba on June 2-3.

CST Wastewater Solutions installation and service specialist Peter Bambridge introduced WIOA delegates to the Smith & Loveless PISTA VIO grit removal system, for which it is exclusive Australian distributor. Smith & Loveless says most grit removal systems are designed only to remove grit in the 200-300 micron range, but typically 40-80% of grit in wastewater is in the 105-200 micron size range. These findings motivated the company to develop a superior grit removal system down to 105 microns. “With so much of Queensland and Australia’s population living near the coast and in often remote sandy areas, such markedly superior grit removal offers immediate and long-term benefits in helping to prevent common grit problems in municipal and industrial water and wastewater systems,” said Mr Bambridge. Left unchecked, grit build-ups create trouble throughout the entire wastewater process, he said. They expose plants to wear, blockages, breakdowns, flooding and hazardous recovery operations by public and private wastewater operations staff. They are on the front line of defence against such issues causing downtime and service interruptions in municipal and private industrial applications, including food and beverage. “The Smith & Loveless technology provides clear benefits to municipal and industrial organisations plagued with grit issues. And now we’ve had the system independently tested to confirm its performance, and it reached the 95% benchmark it was designed to achieve,”

JUNE / JULY 2021

Smith & Loveless’ PISTA technology sets a new benchmark in grit removal, with 95% efficiency down to 105 microns over 10:1 turndown.

said Mr Bambridge. The latest PISTA VIO grit removal system features full variability of inlet and outlet channels. It also features a hydraulic vortex grit chamber design that utilises a new baffle system. This type of grit removal system – one of the first of its kind in the industry – provides the ability to design the inlet and outlet channels at any variable angle up to the full 360° of the chamber. Designers can arrange the system to fit existing sites, or maximise space during construction on new sites.

KDS liquid-to-solid separator

This highly efficient, low-maintenance technology – also available in a skid mounted version for easy transportation via truck or trailer, including to remote sites – requires no washwater, while capturing up to 95% of solids. KDS technology removes more than 50% of the water from wastewater sludge to provide a 50% reduction in transportation costs (which are typically $150 per tonne or higher).

“The new skid-mounted KDS technology offers potential users a highly effective plug-and-play solution to waste processing needs,” says Mr Bambridge. Measuring only 3.8 by 2m, it offers the type of low-maintenance high efficiency that is so important where agribusiness, industrial and municipal operations don’t have the resources to place engineering staff on close standby.

Fine Screening

CST’s locally manufactured screens provide a first line of defence in wastewater or waste management plants. CST provides fine screening down to 3mm to safeguard later parts of the treatment plant from larger bulkier waste that could clog systems and cause unwanted downtime. In addition to supplying quality product, CST’s Services Division also maintains and services screens to optimise their performance and ensure they can cope with varying loads.

Clarifiers

With more than 120 installations throughout Australia, CST has the experience, resources and capability for clarifier projects of diverse types, says Mr Bambridge. CST – as an authorised Australian representative of Smith & Loveless – provides a complete range of Clarifier designs and systems for all municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment applications. The CST range presented at the WIOA conference incorporates circular and rectangular Clarifiers, CLAR-I-VATOR solids contact clarifiers and high rate lamella and tube settler systems.

Our focus on industrial cleaning products in the August/September edition of Industry Update is timely, given the recent Covid-19 outbreak in Melbourne. While we now have an array of risk management tools under our belts to help us navigate our way through the pandemic, cleanliness, in all its forms, remains one of the strongest weapons in our arsenal. In the next edition, we will also explore the ebb and flow in the world of compressors and pneumatics, fluid control, pumps, pipes and valves. We’ll have our ears to the ground for stories from the world of industrial flooring and our measuring tapes out to size up what’s

happening in test and measurement, handle sensors, and weighing and instrumentation. If you’re interested in 3D technology, we’ve also got you covered. You can expect our usual coverage of topics such as Workplace Health and Safety, Business and Finance, Education and Training, Security, Environment and Waste Management, Machinery, and Metalworking and Machine Tooling. PBE-Roboplas' Yizumi 5 offers 'excellent value proposition' By David Sligar Sydney-based PBE-Roboplas provides a versatile range of plastics machinery and ancillary equipment. This includes injection moulding, blow moulding, loading, drying, temperature control and dosing systems. Francis Frutschi, father of current part owner Gerald, has been in the plastics business for more than 40 years. After immigrating to Australia from Switzerland in 1970, he began working for a machine agent where he was importing high speed injection moulding machines from Switzerland. “That agency did well at the time because the industry was in a growth stage as plastics became wildly recognised as an economical packaging and engineering material solution,” said Gerald. Francis Frutschi went on to found Roboplas in 1985, which in 1997 merged with Paul Blunschi Electrics (PBE). “My father’s been in this industry for a long time,” said Gerald. “That’s his life.” Today the bulk of their business comes from injection and blow moulders, who use the machines and equipment for diverse purposes. “Their machines need to be very flexible and universal,” he said. “A lot of the moulding is based on an engineered component or a storage solution such as food and beverage as an example.” PBE-Roboplas, which employs eight people, saw an upturn in orders during the pandemic. “It has been good for us,” he said. “With significant offshore outsourcing, businesses suddenly had to find alternatives, returning focus to Australian manufacturing. With recent government depreciation incentives and very limited good quality used equipment available, we have seen an increase in sales.”

company include Sinco, Tool Temp, Ferlin, Crizaf, Wemo, and Enmair.

The most popular model in the Yizumi range is the Yizumi A5. This range offers “an excellent value proposition”. It is precise and stable, has a wide range of capabilities, is energy efficient and is very user friendly.

Repairs and maintenance are an important part of the PBE-Roboplas business. The firm can help with hydraulic, mechanical, and electric aspects of the machines.

The all-electric range from Yizumi is also gaining popularity. These machines have electric drives instead of a hydraulic system. The solution provides further process accuracy, speed, improved power efficiencies over the A5 range. “The real benefit of the electric machines is a tighter process control”. The Yizumi range also includes large capacity 2 platen and high speed packaging injection moulding machines. Other brands offered by the

“There’s sometimes small niggling problems, where it might be a 1 in 100 cycle fault. They can be very difficult to find, a bad electrical connection for instance. But we usually find it.” Gerald believes there are genuine environmental concerns with plastic disposal and recycling. “Plastics are falling out of favour because of environmental

“There have been positive movements in alternative and natural materials, recycling processes and recycled products, but the problem is so large scale because plastics by themselves have been such an effective and broad solution. “There needs to be a novel solution where we can quickly, easily and cheaply remove plastic from the environment at the same rate as its introduction,” concluded Gerald.
