This is mainly due to the fine Dutch knowledge infrastructure and the excellent collaboration between industry and knowledge institutes, such as TNO and KEMA. Companies and knowledge institutions effortlessly find one another to create innovative solutions. Companies also increasingly often work together in clusters, and therefore suppliers of partial solutions work together on total solutions. Combining forces takes centre stage.

We have collected all these Dutch innovation champions in this FME Energy Guide, in which they will further introduce themselves to you. I would like to invite you to become better acquainted with these companies that we, as FME, are exceptionally proud of.

Another element is most certainly the geographical position of The Netherlands. New maritime solutions for oil and gas are being worked on daily in the Rotterdam port area. This knowledge and these skills are now being used worldwide. Moreover, Dutch ports are an important base camp for increasing offshore activities in the North Sea, which also boost further innovation.

Made in the World Recently I visited the United States as member of a trade mission with the Dutch Minister for the Environment. During one of the tours in a cleantech company in California, we noticed that the main piece of equipment used was manufactured in The Netherlands.

While we were there to see the innovations the Americans develop, it turned out that the Dutch were empowering them in their cause.

The Netherlands is a small nation with relatively few energy resources. For quite some time we have been dealing with the challenges the world now faces when it comes to energy. It was therefore no surprise to see that a Dutch company is actively involved with cleantech developments in the US. As a trading nation, the Dutch also know the importance of innovation. Today’s global economy is all about what you bring to the table: new products, ideas and concepts. For the Dutch energy sector this translates into products and services that are more energy efficient, more sustainable and integrate various energy resources. These solutions are not limited to the Dutch needs, but can be applied worldwide.

The energy sector is one of the Dutch economy’s leading sectors. Thanks to a spirit of enterprise and innovation this sector provides tens of thousands of jobs occupying a strong position in Europe. The research and development activities in the sector are streamlined by the so-called ‘Top Sector approach’. Stimulated and backed by the government, the Dutch research

institutions and private companies have developed an unprecedented joined R&D agenda. This agenda brings all the necessary knowledge and resources together.

All projects on this agenda have been documented in Innovation Contracts and Green Deals to make sure all parties contribute and make progress.

The Top Sector Energy is committed to the development of clean technology. Energy companies invest about 4,9 billion euro. On top of that, the 380 companies and research institutions involved in the Top Sector Energy invest about 275 million euro’s each year. This money is used to collaborate in areas such as wind, solar, gas, bio-energy and energy efficiency in cities and industry.

The final research area is the distribution of energy using smart grids. These investments also address the non-technical innovations needed, such as the training of highly skilled people and empowering consumers to be actively involved in their energy supply.

The Dutch are ‘one to watch’ when it comes to cleantech. This energy guide gives an impression of our collective knowledge and experience. However, the best is yet to come if we are able to team up with you, the entrepreneurs, suppliers, and researchers from across the globe. Let’s join forces and innovate together under the joint label ‘Made in the World’.

In the years to come, Petrogas from Gouda will be manufacturing installations for the Swiss Diesoil, in which diesel is produced from plastic.

Dutch company Petrogas engineers, calculates and builds installations for the gas industry. The company became successful working for, amongst others, the Dutch Gasunie and now globally provides expertise and products, for instance, for the treatment of natural gas, oil and nitrogen. Installations that convert plastic waste into diesel will be added to this list in the following years.

erated, which covers the processes’ heat and energy production. Edwin Hoogwerf, Sales Director at Petrogas, explains: ‘It may seem too good to be true, but this is proven technology. Our engineers worked at the Swiss pilot plant for several weeks, where 300 kilograms are processed each hour. They witnessed and calculated that the process runs both efficiently and balanced.’

Waste plastic of the right composition can be sorted and cracked in a specifically designed process. The product that is released in this process condenses, and it becomes diesel. The by-products that do not condense, the so-called non-condensables, are incinerated in the incinerators that provide the heat for the process.

The raw material for this process is plastic made from oil product. Plastic waste can be mechanically sorted into usable and unusable material. One kilogramme of plastic waste yields one litre of diesel. This manner of recycling is cost efficient and upgrades the value chain, which now runs from oil to plastic to diesel.

There is plenty of plastic waste. Usage and recycling is well-organised in the Netherlands and Belgium, but the landfill sites in countries such as India are filled with waste that includes a substantial amount of plastic. This waste can be efficiently divided into biocomponents and plastics.

Waste all of a sudden becomes valuable, as approximately 55% of the plastic can be used for recycling. 45% may be unsuitable for recycling, but is suitable for making diesel.

The fuel from the pilot plant complies with the European EN590 standard for diesel. The process is still being further optimised. Efficiently managing the cracking process will result in better specifications of the end product. This will have a huge impact on recycling plastics and on the environment. Such a change takes time, and investors must opt for long-term. Nevertheless, a new factory for 15,000 tons per year costs 24 million Euros, with already a return on investment of approximately 16%. As soon as the quality of the diesel improves and the product is certified, the value quickly rises and the payoff times decrease.

The patent for this process belongs to the Swiss company Diesoil. This enterprise has already been using a functioning pilot plant in Sihlbrugg, Switzerland for five years. The process is now being scaled up and the company markets plants with an annual capacity of 15,000 tons. The first commercial, large-scale application will be located in the German Grossenhain. This factory should be operational by the end of 2014 / beginning of 2015. There is a great demand from the rest of the world. The demand is currently determined by Petrogas’ production capacity, which is why the company from Gouda foresees a large expansion.

EXAMPLES OF DUTCH SOLUTIONS FOR GLOBAL CHALLENGES Offshore Wind Energy The Dutch are particularly experienced in offshore wind energy solutions. One example for instance is the Prinses Amalia Windpark located in block Q7 of the Dutch Continental Shelf. This block is located 23 kilometers from the shore where the water is 19 to 24 metres deep. This makes the Prinses Amalia Wind Farm the first offshore wind farm to be constructed in such deep waters and at such a distance from the shore (beyond the 12-mile limit).

Operational since 2008 it has annual power production of 435 Gwh, enough to power 125.000 households.

Solar Energy Another example of a high-quality technology solution from the Netherlands is the “City of the Sun “in the Dutch town of Heerhugowaard. This neighbourhood is “carbon neutral“, producing enough energy to offset what it uses. The City of the Sun is one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) projects in the housing sector worldwide. This project also includes wind turbines and every home has been built according to high standards of energy efficiency.

ECN: Efficiency as a product The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) is the largest research institute in the Netherlands in the field of energy. The institute is internationally known for its knowledge of heat regulation in processes, and how to improve these processes and develop new solutions. Peter Alderliesten, Program Development Manager Energy Efficiency at ECN, sees ample opportunities for innovative technology. ‘Energy and sustainability are often discussed in the context of supply. We focus on identifying opportunities for improvements on the user’s side’, explains Alderliesten. Approximately 80% of all energy use in the industry consists of heat, which is often still generated by classic processes using oil or gas-fired furnaces. The efficiency of these processes varies, and a relevant question is whether they are still the right processes to use. And what else can you do with the heat that currently still escapes via the chimney or cooling water?

Alderliesten and his team are involved in numerous analyses of energy and heat flows in divergent industrial processes, while also looking for room to innovate within these processes. ,Among other things, ECN has vast knowledge of, and experience in the field of heat pumps. These pumps can be used to upgrade released heat of, for instance, 60 to 120 degrees Celsius to a higher temperature for heating, or to lower temperatures for cooling. This heat can subsequently be reused in the process, thus improving efficiency. The technical challenges faced by ECN are mainly found in the great difference between the temperature of waste heat and the relatively high working temperatures needed.

Unfortunately, this energy efficient technology is not yet widely available.

A new 200kW heat pump was recently installed at paper manufacturer Smurfit Kappa. The collaboration between the contractor, Bronswerk, IBK and ECN led to a 10% saving in energy use. What is innovative about this heat pump is that much higher temperatures can be reached with this concept. The heat pump can upgrade the waste heat temperature within this system from 60 to 140 degrees Celsius via a natural refrigerant, producing steam. This is much higher compared to the performances of common heat pump systems. Another novelty of this heat pump is the way in which the system is integrated into the paper factory. Today, heat pump systems are still frequently added to existing installations. Heat pumps that are actally integrated in the process are the next step towards a far-reaching improvement of energy efficiency.

These heat pumps are tailored to the specific process, unlocking a considerably higher efficiency potential.

One of the most important future technologies is the thermoacoustic heat pump. Within two years, Bronswerk and ECN expect to have set up an operational pilot that demonstrates a substantial efficiency improvement in processes, using an electrically driven heat pump. The available knowledge and experience are used for farreaching optimisation of heat management in the industry worldwide.

ECN has identified six core activities with opportunities for the industry, business sector, government authorities and knowledge institutes: ► Solar energy. Together with manufacturers of solar modules, production equipment and materials, ECN ensures that the latest scientific insights are applied in usable concepts for solar cells, modules and processes. ► Wind energy. ECN participates in improving designs of wind farms, turbines and turbine parts as well as more efficient maintenance. These efforts focus on substantially lowering the costs of offshore wind energy. ► Biomass. The institute’s efforts are targeted at the biobased economy, with a focus on thermochemical conversion of biomass. Working areas include pretreatment, gasification, purification and biorefining.

ECN’s know-how and network of expertise is used to make industrial processes more efficient, for example by means of heat pumps, separation technology and revolutionary chemical reactors. ► Environment & Energy Engineering. ECN develops and designs experimental installations, prototypes and high tech components, and supports innovative businesses and institutes with ground-breaking technology.

Supply and demand of energy In the world of energy, transport and distribution is also an ever-changing field of work. The growth of decentralised generation via conventional and new technology impacts the use of the electricity network. As a consultant for ECN, Marco Bakker works on both domestic and international studies of electricity networks within the framework of energy policy. ‘The demand for electricity is increasing, and in Europe we see a shift from gas to electricity. Energy supply is becoming progressively

decentralised, due to the strong growth in solar and wind energy. Contrary to the supply of a conventional power plant, this supply cannot be controlled. What should we do to accommodate the generation of solar and wind energy? These questions must be solved.’

The changes in supply and demand lead to an increasing need for flexibility from the network, the market and from providers. The need for a network’s peak capacity is increasingly determined by supply rather than by demand. Energy prices will be more volatile, whilst conventional plants will be used more frequently to fill the gap caused by the intermittent solar and wind energy supply. However, these conventional plants have been built to supply a constant, fixed output. The business case for conventional energy plants is therefore crumbling. This change also creates challenges for the electricity network. Most European countries have legal requirements stating that network administrators shall organise energy transports upon request. This means that if a farmer has a substantial number of solar modules on his barn, the capacity of his connection must be enlarged. At present, this additional investment is often not considered in the final decision, because the network administrator is not involved at this stage. The FME ENERGY GUIDE 2014-2015

costs of this suboptimal choice are, however, ultimately borne by civilians. The policy makers that work on these issues see plenty of options, but they have difficulty making the right decision. ‘At ECN, we help government authorities and enterprises to shape the policy and make strategic decisions’, Bakker adds. ‘We make specific analyses of the market forces and we search for viable new business models, with specific focus on the roles of the market operators.’

Bakker quotes a recent study in which the growth of decentralised generation and the effects on the electricity network in the province of North Holland have been researched. In 2020, the supply from decentralised generation is likely to be much higher than the current network capacity. A rigorous capacity expansion is expensive. Remote control of the production of cogeneration installations of growers could provide a solution. The income that these growers lose due to lower electricity production could easily be compensated by the network administrator. As this missed income is more than four times lower than the avoided network investment amount, the net savings are still very large. This is a smart grid on a regional scale.

Another aspect of the transition to a flexible energy system is being tested in a pilot project on the Danish island

of Bornholm. ECN is closely involved in this project, in which two thousand households and a wide array of sustainable solar and wind generation are connected by a smart grid. This project focuses on controlling consumers’ energy demand: ranging from active, direct remote control to offering energy saving suggestions. The objective of the project is to find out what drives consumers in saving energy. Some people have financial reasons, while others want to contribute to a better world, and a third driver is to decrease the dependency on fossil fuels. Bakker concludes: ‘The field experiment clearly demonstrates that there are different reasons for users to change their energy consumption behaviour. These groups all require a different approach.’

ECN’s knowledge is used to develop energy efficient technologies that are practically applicable to both existing and new processes, ranging from recycling and upgrading process heat to the emergence of smart grids in energy nets. ECN also helps countries where sustainability has not yet taken centre stage. ECN helps to establish sustainable energy policy in areas where energy generation is unable to meet demand and where the need for energy will strongly increase in the years to come.
