5 Ways To Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in plaque on teeth. The bacteria produce acids that dissolve tooth enamel, causing cavities. Cavities can cause pain, infection, and even loss of teeth.

Brush Properly. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and rinsing after meals and snacks will help keep your mouth healthy and cavity free. You should also floss at least once per day to remove food particles and plaque buildup between teeth.

Floss Daily. If you're not brushing and flossing regularly, you might be putting yourself at risk for cavities. Start by brushing your teeth before bedtime and then rinse thoroughly with water. Then use an interdental brush to clean between your teeth and gums. Finally, floss every night before going to sleep.

Visit the Dentist Regularly. It's also important to visit the dentist regularly. This will help keep your mouth healthy and reduce the chance of tooth decay.

Avoid Sugary Foods. Sugar is one of the main reasons why teeth become decayed. If you eat too much sugar, it can cause cavities. You should avoid foods with added sugars such as candy, soda, and other sweetened drinks. Instead, choose healthier options like fruit juices, milk, and water.

Drink Fluoridated Water. It’s recommended that everyone drink fluoridated water to help protect against tooth decay. This includes children, pregnant women, and adults who aren’t able to brush and floss properly.
