Shri Sita Ram Foundation Hosts 12th Diwali and Dusshera Festival By Kapil Sharma

Houston: The Shri Sita Ram Foundation, USA is delighted to invite the Houston community to join in the celebration of the 12th International Diwali and Dussehra Festival. This vibrant event promises to be a day filled with cultural entertainment, delectable food, dance performances, and spectacular fireworks. Event Details: - Date: Saturday, November 4, 2023 - Time: 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM - Location: Fort Bend Epicenter, Richmond, Texas Diwali, known as the “Festival of Lights,” is one of the most significant cultural festivals in India, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It is celebrated not only by Hindus but also by Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, or more than a billion people worldwide. Traditional festivities include fairs, food preparations, prayers, and the exchange of gifts. The night is illuminated with fireworks, and homes are adorned with lamps and rangolis — traditional decorations drawn on the floor — to welcome wealth and prosperity. “Diwali is more than just a festival,” said Dr. Arun Varma, the founder of the Shri Sita Ram Foundation. “It’s an embodiment of the age-old Indian saying, “Vasudhava Kutumbakam,” which means ‘the world is one family.’ It reminds us that we are all connected, that every person on this planet is our brother or sister. With that spirit, we invite one and all to join us and celebrate our shared humanity, irrespective of backgrounds or beliefs” Highlights of the 12th Annual Diwali and Dusshera Festival 2023: The festival kicks off with a grand parade featuring over 40 floats representing various cultural and social organizations with dance and music. A standout in this procession is a remarkable replica model of the new Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which will open in January. Families attending the festival can look forward to a day filled with child-friendly entertainment. From pony rides, clowns, free face painting, moonwalks, balloons and magic shows to engaging puppet performances, there’s something for every young heart.A competitive kids’ Broadway show will also showcase the talents of youth, including singing, dancing, musical performances, and skits. Local business booths will offer a diverse range of products including handicrafts, art, and delectable traditional Indian cuisine. Attendees can immerse themselves in cultural traditions through an exhibition of paintings of Ram, a major Hindu deity and a

traditional Ram Leela play and the Maha Aarti, the prayers to Lord Ram. As the sun sets, the evening will come alive with a mesmerizing laser show, setting the stage for the symbolic Ravan effigy burning — symbolizing the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravan — and the breathtaking fireworks display. Enthusiasts of traditional Indian dance can join the Garba-at-thefountain, a popular Indian group dance accompanied by traditional music and mesmerizing color changing lights. This year, the festival is honored to welcome distinguished guests, including the Consul General of India and HH Chinna Jeeyar Swami ji. The Shri Sita Ram Foundation invites the community to come together and celebrate this diverse cultural extravaganza. October 20, 2023 IN MEMORIUM 5 HEALTH NRI Researcher Contributed to First Pill for Postpartum Depression

Dr. Samba Reddy has pioneered research on neurosteroids that paved the way for new oral pill for postpartum depression in women. College Station, Texas: On August 4, 2023, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zuranolone (Zurzuvae) as the first oral neurosteroid treatment for postpartum depression (PPD) in women. PPD is a serious mental health condition that can affect new mothers after giving birth. It can cause symptoms such as sadness, anxiety, despair, and thoughts of self-harm or harming one’s child. Dr. Samba Reddy, an Indian scientist working at the Texas A&M University School of Medicine, has made groundbreaking contributions to neurosteroid replacement therapy (NRT) research, paving the way for the development of this new medicine for PPD. Neurosteroids are steroids that are produced in the brain and play a vital role in regulating brain function. Dr. Reddy explains that “neurosteroids are released each time we undergo mild stress, and that means that they are ‘stressbusters.’” During pregnancy, levels of one particular neurosteroid, allopregnanolone, increase. However, after childbirth, neurosteroid levels fall, which can lead to chemical imbalances in the brain and PPD. Dr. Reddy’s research led to the development of intravenous allo-

pregnanolone for the treatment of PPD. This medication, renamed brexanolone, was approved in 2019 as the first PPD treatment to be administered in certified health facilities. This landmark journey on brexanolone, from concept to clinic, was archived in the journal Psychopharmacology. “Ten percent of mothers experience PPD, but before NRTbased neurosteroid therapeutics, we didn’t have any medicine that worked rapidly,” Dr. Reddy said. “After childbirth, they would have to wait weeks for existing antide-

pressants, such as fluoxetine or other SSRIs or SNRIs, to take effect, so the neurosteroid therapy is filling this gap.” The treatment takes effect within just a few hours, which is in stark contrast to the traditional antidepressants that have been historically used to treat PPD, which take three or four weeks. However, brexanolone is an intravenous medication, which means that patients must stay in the hospital for three days to receive the infusion. This can be a barrier to treatment for many new

mothers due to time, financial, and social constraints. Zuranolone, an oral allopregnanolone analog, addresses these limitations. It is administered by mouth in a single 14-day course, allowing new mothers to take the medication and recover in the comfort of their own homes. Similar to brexanolone, zuranolone replaces the loss of natural neurosteroids and improves the function of the extrasynaptic and synaptic GABA-A receptors, which regulate mood and behavior. Dr. Reddy’s research on neu-

rosteroids has spanned over two decades. He is credited with developing the concept of neurosteroids as a new class of neuromodulators. His work has led to the development of new therapeutic products, such as brexanolone and zuranolone, which have the potential to improve the lives of millions of people suffering from brain and mental health disorders. The neurosteroid concept he and his collaborators came up with over two decades ago has finally enabled the creation of a new type of product that is accessible to the public as zuranolone. The clinical approval of zuranolone recognizes Dr. Reddy’s pioneering research on neurosteroids, the endogenous molecules that regulate neuronal excitability, seizure and mood by rapidly interacting with ionotropic GABA-A receptors on neurons. Dr. Reddy’s pioneering research on neurosteroids has ushered in a new era of research with the potential to develop new treatments for other neurological and psychiatric conditions. The clinical approval of zuranolone is a testament to his groundbreaking work and a major step forward in the treatment of postpartum depression.

Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee’s “Aquarius Art Tunnel” at Houston Airport

Houston: Travelers at Houston’s Intercontinental Airport will be transported under the sea when walking through the “Aquarius Art Tunnel” by Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee. The contemporary artist, originally from Mumbai, now residing in the Oak Forest Houston, wants to live in a world where everyone can experience the beauty of the ocean – even in between flights. Mahimtura Folmsbee’s installation includes colorful murals of aquatic life, floor designs, lenticulars and ceiling tiles. A didactic panel explains the full features and offers augmented reality capabilities. Original music, composed by Andrew Karnavas, plays in the space, as well as recordings provided by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Mahimtura Folmsbee also contributed sounds from her personal diving excursions. She began scuba diving 14 years ago and has completed 259 dives. The design was inspired by Flower Garden Banks Marine National Sanctuary on the Texas coast. In the installation, Mahimtura Folmsbee included dozens of sea creatures, from coral, fish and sharks to dolphins, matra rays and octopi. The detailed art was created with the newest mural-making technol-

ogy. Mahimtura Folmsbee worked with experts at Moody Gardens to ensure the work is scientifically accurate, representing the deeper regions of the Gulf of Mexico. The title of the installation pays homage to the constellation Aquarius, the water-bearer. The word “Aquarius” can be broken down into: “aqua,” representing water; “ri,” inspired y the Hindi word “humari,” which translates to “ours,” and finally “us.” Marine conservation is at the center of Mahimtura Folmsbee’s oeuvre. This installation will serve as a continuation of years of effort to draw attention to the health of the world’s oceans. “Marine life and

algae need our help now more than ever,” she said. Already, the tunnel is receiving international attention. Mahimatura Folmsbee was honored with the “People’s Choice” prize from CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art. Winners in other categories reside across the country – and around the globe. Mahimtura Folsmbee is bringing the award to Texas – a major win for the city of Houston. She has been named a CODAworx 2023 Creative Revolutionary, one of the top art and design leaders changing the world. The Aquarius Art Tunnel has been endorsed by the NOAA

Sanctuary offices in Galveston and received the National Mural Award in 2023 for Region 4. The United Nations Decades of Ocean Science For Sustainable Development, created by UNESCO, endorsed the Aquarius Art Tunnel as a global site for its scientific and educational importance towards ocean conservation through artistic outreach. Mahimtura Folmsbee is the first female South Asian artist to be featured in the Houston Airports Public Art Program and collection. The tunnel, commissioned by Houston Airports, has an added significance for Mahimtura Folmsbee, since it is where she, and

Janavi Mahimatura Folmsbee

countless others, take the flight home to India. Mahimtura Folmsbee works with marine scientists in the global community and sits on the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, as an advisory to the superintendent of the sanctuary through NOAA. Chinmaya Mission Houston Celebrates Navaratri with Traditional Flair By Rajesh Thatte Houston: Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) families and their guests were treated with a vibrant yet spiritual Navaratri Garba on Saturday October 7, 2023, at Gujarati Samaj Houston. It is an annual tradition at CMH for families to come together and offer prayers and homage to Goddess Durga during Navaratri. The Navaratri festival is observed worldwide during the first nine days of the Hindu month Ashwin. The program started promptly at 5:30PM after guests were checkedin swiftly and treated with appetizers on arrival. The singing team led by Ruchira Shah started the auspicious main event with the opening prayer and invocation. The melodious chanting of Sarva Mangala Mangalye, the hymn to the Aadi Shakti, the manifestation of creative energy of the universe, set the program in motion. The Garba followed the opening prayers and every attendee joined in. Garba, also known as Garaba, is a dance where devotees move in circles around the pratima of Goddess Durga, worshiping Her. This year, the day of celebration also coincided with the birthday of Pujya Gaurang Nanavaty, Acarya of Chinmaya Mission Houston. Volunteers took this opportunity to present two

performances on stage for Pujya Gaurang Uncle. While a group of ladies showcased a colorful, special Garba performance, a few Bala Vihar children, the stars of the event, presented Badhai Ho Badhai, a birthday song. Then came a high-energy dance performance based on the traditional Gujarati folk song Sanedo, with a creative and colorful touch to the lyrics composed artfully to portray the past, present, and future plans for CMH. While the performance got the

audience grooving to its beats, the song reminded attendees of the objectives of Chinmaya Mission and motivated engagement and participation in the CMH. The program continued with the Arati of Goddess Durga.Following that, the event unfolded into what everyone was waiting for, Raas and Dandia, the pinnacle of Navaratri celebration. Toddlers and children, with their colorful costumes, were an adorable part of the assembly. As the venue resonated with music, no one was able to remain on

the sidelines and everyone joined the Raas. Age and dancing proficiency were no bar. The singing team of CMH - Ruchira Shah, Priya Mohan, Shweta Shroff, Mithil Rana, Vivek Chitale, and Dr. Rucha Sheth kept devotees energized song after song with their cheerful voices. This year, Naina Sheth, a budding young talent, joined the singing team onstage. Prathamesh Mehta enthusiastically conducted the program, and Srinivas Raju aptly managed the audio and stage

that evening. While the singing and dancing was going on, the attendees were served freshly cooked, delicious vegetarian food. The program concluded at 9:30 PM with closing prayers. The Navaratri event organized and hosted by CMH is a fun-filled, social celebration bringing families together. This year, the CMH Navaratri event saw a record number of more than a thousand attendees, primarily driven by increased enrollment in Chinmaya Mission Houston’s Bala Vihar program. Bharati Akhave and her team did a tremendous job of decorations and coordination of program logistics. Pujya Gaurang Uncle expressed his gratitude to every sevak of CMH who contributed a selfless helping hand towards the success of the event. The volunteers of CMH are not resting though because CMH is gearing up for the Kumbhabhisekam of Saumyakasi Sivalaya and a special Jyotirlinga Yatra coming up November 24-26. Story: When four ordinary women go on a motorcycle adventure to the world’s highest drivable pass, Khardung La, they also embark on a journey of self-discovery and identity. Review: Is it about the destination or the journey? Here’s a motorcycle adventure that proves there’s more to a voyage than these, as on the road, so in life. Director-writer Tarun Dudeja and co-writer Parijat Joshi kickstart the story on a routinal note, introducing the viewer to its protagonists. Sky (Fatima Sana Shaikh) is a motorcycle reviewer and influencer trying to break her inadvertent scandalous social media image and storm the male bastion to create her own identity. Manpreet, aka Mahi (Ratna Pathak Shah), is a grandma, and Uzma (Dia Mirza) is a homemaker unappreciated by their families. Mathura girl Manjari is set to marry a stranger of her mother’s choice. The rest of the story is about their experiences, misadventures, and equations with each other as they take a transformative trip. While narrated well, the film’s first half occasionally sputters as it shows biases against female drivers or riders, the lack of safety for women, and how they are taken for granted. However, the narrative switches gears and accelerates the excitement once they are on the road. Cinematographer Sreechith Vijayan Damodar perfectly Kaushika Shah captures the mountains, whether a smooth Licensed Sales Agent ride on the picturesque 832-282-3515, TTY 711 roads or through the dramatic terrains, landslides, flooding, etc.

life lessons through simplicity, delivered through memorable dialogues. A truck driver encourages Manjari to look at problems objectively and says, ‘Apni problem mein tension lena aur doosre ki problem mein solution dena, yeh toh insaan ki fitrat hai. Is liye kabhi khudke padosi ban kar dekho.’ Just like while travelling in a real-life, while you are aware of your destination but cannot predict what will happen during the journey, the turn of events in the story is refreshing. The movie also elicits laughter, thanks to Mahi and Manjari’s shenanigans. Rishi Dutta’s soundtrack is upbeat, especially the folk-rock title track Banjara Re. Ratna Pathak Shah as a loving, shy, and cheeky Punjabi grandma, Fatima Sana Shaikh as a firebrand girl dealing with her demons, Dia Mirza as a jugaadu mechanic with stifled dreams, and Sanjana Sanghi as the klutzy and overprotected simple girl are outstanding in their roles. Sewa International Raising Funds to Aid Israeli Victims & Families

Turning 65?

Welcom t Medicar!

Houston: Sewa International expresses deep concern for the people affected by the recent terrorist attacks in Israel. Our philosophy, grounded in the age-old Hindu traditions, promotes the well-being of all and the sanctity of life. We stand in solidarity with the innocent victims of these attacks and offer our thoughts and prayers to grieving families. As a volunteer-led non-profit with experience serving in almost 40 disasters worldwide, Sewa understands the devastating impact of senseless attacks on societies and families. We urge all groups involved in this conflict to protect innocent lives and avoid further violence. In the early morning of Saturday 7 October, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, sending thousands of missiles and hundreds of gunmen across the border from the Gaza Strip. The assault – which targeted military bases and civilians in towns and villages, kibbutzim and at a music festival – killed more more than 1,300 people. Among the dead were Israeli civilians and soldiers, and many people from countries across the world. Officials said 30 U.S. citizens were killed, and 13 remained unaccounted for, though it was unclear how many were being held hostage. The slain Americans included an “idealist” who saved her son from assailants’ bullets and a nurse from California who had moved to Israel to care for her parents. The missing Americans included a mother and daughter from the Chicago area who were visiting relatives in Israel when the assailants struck, a recent high school graduate from Long Island, and a 23-year-old attending a large music festival that came under attack from Hamas — and whose fam-

ily now believes may be badly injured. In opening remarks, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the hostilities as “utterly appalling”. The events have caused unconscionable death, immense suffering and damage to vital infrastructure. “Fighting must stop,” he stressed. The United Nations is actively engaging all sides towards an immediate ceasefire. He deplored the increasingly large numbers of Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza from Israeli air strikes, as well as Israeli fatalities from rockets launched from Gaza. He also expressed deep concern over violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where Palestinian families are under threat of eviction. In Israel, violence by vigilantestyle groups and mobs has added another horrendous dimension to the crisis. Sewa International has started a fundraising campaign to support the victims and their families affected by this tragic and heartwrenching situation. We appeal to all Americans to generously donate to Sewa to help the relief efforts in Israel and be a part of the healing process: https://www. facebook.com/donate/17333898 2485592/ or https://sewausa.org/ SupportIsraelWarReliefFundraiser. About Sewa International Sewa International (www. sewausa.org) is a 501 (c) (3) Hindu faith-based charitable nonprofit that works in the areas of disaster recovery, education, and development.
