Houston: After three long years of COVID-19 pandemic forced absence, Ekal Vidyalaya - Houston hosted a live fund-raising event, Ekal Sur Sangam, at the GSH Event Center, on May 6, 2022. With the overwhelming support from Ekal donors, patrons and well-wishers, the full house was treated to a sumptuous dinner catered by Bhojan and entertained by two young singers from IndiaGeetesh Iyer and Garima Khiste. Garima comes from a family of musicians and has participated in the reality show ‘The Voice’. Geetesh is an ex-Indian Idol and X-Factor finalist with a flair for Bollywood, Indian Classical, and Rock Music. The concert was an ambitious post pandemic undertaking of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation (EVF) – USA and its co-founder Ramesh Shah. EVF USA has been headquartered in Houston from its inception circa 2000. After the dinner the program kicked off with the MC, Pramod Singh, welcoming the guests, sharing his personal story that not only brought out emotions in him but also touched the hearts of all guests. He said, “I am fortunate to have been born, raised and educated in Kanpur, UP, but my father’s journey was far more challenging. He was born in a small village with very limited family resources yet with a strong desire to educate himself. One person in the village with foresight spotted the potential in the young boy and offered to support his education in a neighboring town. That not only transformed his life but the generations that followed him. The credit for my standing here in front of you, in large part goes to that individual who gave the gift of education to my father. We should be happy that over the past two decades through our selfless acts of giving we have been instrumental in creating a positive wave of change in the remote villages of India. Let us continue to educate more children and empower more villages through our philanthropic journey.” The stage was then taken over by the energy of the musicians and the singers, presenting a bouquet of new and old songs. The evening continued with short clips of Ekal activities in India - a young girl narrating her experience of how Ekal school fulfilled her dream, women enthusiastically acquiring skills and earning power through tailor training centers, youth excited to learn computer skills through mobile computer labs (Ekal on Wheels). Each clip was preceded by short messages from Ekal volunteers; chapter president-Rajeev Aluru, Ekal Abhiyan CEO-Ramesh Shah, Ekal USA President- Suresh Iyer, Outreach Leader- Sandhya Suri, and Youth Leader-Nidhi Gupta. Rajeev Aluru talked about the holistic village development through three verticals: Primary education through village schools and

Houston: The Puranik Foundation flourished at the Inaugural Lotus Innovation Awards Gala on Thursday, April 28, 2022, with three generations of women who share a mission of providing educational opportunities that open minds, stimulate holistic perspectives and inspire transformation. The Puranik Foundation and more than 400 guests celebrated the first The Energy Project, a semester-long internship program that offered high school students the opportunity to impact the future of sustainability by co-creating alternative innovations to benefit Houston by problem-solving local energy challenges. The Puranik Foundation launched The Energy Project in December 2021, in partnership with HISD’s Energy Institute High School (EIHS), Rice University Energy Association and CleanTech Clubs, Stanford University Professor Ariel Raz, Junior Achievement, and TXRX Labs. The Puranik family is one of the pioneer families that immigrated to Houston in the early 1970s. Sudhir Puranik was a metallurgist, who found success with Worldwide Oilfield Machinery (WOM), a manufacturer of gate valves and other oilfield equipment. Sudhir and Rekha Puranik raised their family during the 1980s and 1990s in southwest Houston. Success of WOM led the Puraniks to establish manufacturing centers in Houston, Pune, Scotland and Pune. Rekha moved back to Pune to establish the Vision International Learning Center, a K-12 residential school for underserved children in Pune. The Puranik Foundation was founded 20 years ago and is the corporate social responsibility arm of WOM. The ballroom at The Post Oak Uptown was transformed into a colorful and elegant visual showcase of the Puranik Foundation’s impact in India and Houston with décor by Mandap Creations which was inspired by the Foundation’s beginnings under a tree in Pune, India. Embracing beauty, grace, and pride, guests snapped photos of the mesmerizing life-sized peacock,

India’s national bird, made from florals and appeared to grow out of the boxwood backdrop. From the lotus pond, the five teams displayed and pitched their innovative design projects to attendees to garner votes for the People’s Choice Award. With a hopeful heart for the future, guests wrote down their wishes on leaves, and hung them among a Tree of Life. The sound of a dhol drummer moved guests to their seats and emcee Casey Curry welcomed The Energy Project supporters and also introduced Executive Director Bhakti Salunkhe. Bobby Tudor, Chairman of Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co, provided a virtual keynote speech followed by a proclamation presentation. On behalf of the City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Education Olivera Jankovska presented the Puranik Foundation with a “Puranik Foundation Day” on April 28th proclamation honoring the founders Rekha and Sudhir Puranik. Dinner was vibrant and delightful with elaborate floral arrangements provided by Flowers by Nino and gold lotus lanterns. A salad of salt-crusted, oven-roasted red and yellow beets with avocado cream, candied walnuts, dried apricots filled with goat cheese, and fresh pea shoots complimented the décor along with papadum with spiced fruit chutney. The Richard Brown Orchestra entertained the guests while they enjoyed their choice of the pescatarian dish which included pistachio-crusted sea bass served along with cauliflower mousseline and roasted rainbow carrots or the vegetarian entrée, which included cauliflower steak masoor dal tadka served with green potato puree for vegetarian guests. Dessert is sweeter when there’s a duo of pina colada coconut mousse and a chocolate caramel tart. A The Energy Project partner, Stanford University Professor Ariel Raz, shared his remarks on The Energy Project followed by a video that summarized the students’ work during the 10-week intern-

ship. In teams, students worked together to design innovative energy approaches to sustaining areas in alternative power generation, sustainable water usage, energy consumption, waste management, and urban design. During the Lotus Awards, the sustainable consumption project titled “Karot” was awarded a $15,000 grant for the implementation of the prototype that uses fish to help grow protein and plants in a home aquaponics system while “GHOST” an urban design for a better means of transportation to help Houstonians maintain mobility was awarded the People’s Choice Award. Event Chair and Global CFO and Executive Vice President of Worldwide Oilfield Machine, Rani Puranik dazzled guests with her voice during a singing performance that included a fusion of “Colors of the Wind” and an Indian classical raga called “nahi punyachi mojani” which means celebration of life and was followed by asking guests to light their candles during her closing remarks. The power of unity was displayed across the room as the crowd of guests held their candles up high. The Lotus Innovation Awards Gala, produced by Paul-David Van Atta, was made possible with the support of the following sponsors and guests: Worldwide Oilfield Machine, Puranik Family, Joanne King Herring, former Lt. Governor of Texas David Dewhurst, Counsel General of Nepal Steve Payne, Reagan and Doug Bauer, Madelaine and Richard Yates, Leela and Nat

Krishnamurthy, Leisa HollandNelson, Cheryl Byington, Beth Wolff, Cynthia Wolff, Katie Mehnert, Nancy Parsons, Stephanie Tsuru, Carrie Colbert, Mary Grace Landrum, Maryanne Maldonado, and Sandija Bayot. The Puranik Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Houston that owns and operates the Vision International Learning Center, a school in Pune, India. The Foundation believes in providing educational opportunities that open minds, stimulate holistic perspectives, and inspire transformation. Titles and Sponsors Announced for 2022 Minor League Cricket Championships

San Francisco: Minor League Cricket (MiLC) announced today that Toyota will return as title sponsor for its second season of play in 2022, with Sunoco signing on as presenting sponsor for America’s first and only nationwide T20 championship. MiLC also announced today that the draft for the 2022 season will take place on Thursday, May 12. Twenty-seven teams will again participate in the competition starting on Saturday, June 25, with over 200 games scheduled to take place this summer. Toyota’s return as MiLC title sponsor follows their support of the inaugural season in 2021, with the championship won by the Silicon Valley Strikers last October. The Bay Area team, captained by Unmukt Chand, defeated the New Jersey Stallions at the final held in Morrisville, North Carolina. Sunoco joins the Minor League Cricket family as the presenting partner for the 2022 season, to feature 27 teams and 500 players in games held nationwide across 20 cities, the most extensive cricket competition in the United States. Sunoco will be the Official Fuel and Official Convenience Store of Minor League Cricket. “Following the most extensive tournament in American cricket history taking place successfully in 2021, we can’t wait to bring

season as they continue to grow this exciting sport here in the United States,” said Darcey Rayner, Sponsorship Strategy, Integration

& Activation, Toyota Motor North America. “After the success of last year’s season, we are excited to see the players and teams from across the country compete this summer for the Championship.” “Sunoco is excited to partner with Minor League Cricket and support the sport’s continued growth across the country,” said Fred McConnell, Director of Marketing, Sunoco. “Sunoco

YLDP: “Excellence Doesn’t Always Mean Completion” By Sanath Muralidhara

Houston: When looking at top leaders across the world like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, we get a feeling that a leader has to be complete, well-rounded, and extremely brilliant at what they do. However, no one can achieve all of these qualities all at once in this day and age. Today, the job of an executive isn’t to control their staff, but to encourage and empower them to complete tasks as a team. In Harvard Business Review, Chapter 10, the Incomplete Business Leader is a revered aspect of business leadership. It illustrates the power of being flawed, and that the flawed people can look for new and unique ways to bring together their teams and get work done more efficiently. Four core leadership capabilities can help all organizations: sensemaking, relating, visioning, and inventing. All four of these qualities combined can help the executive to find new ways to engage their team and showcase their leadership. Sensemaking is interpreting developments in the business environment. This means that a leader has to make sense of their organization: to find out how it works,

the nuts and bolts that make up the foundation, and how the people work together. Next, relating comes in. This involves building relationships with your teammates, and partners, and understanding the other person’s viewpoint about certain business aspects. Visioning helps the executive plan out their future in front of their own eyes, and how they want to see their company in a set amount of time, like 5 years, 10 years, or even 50 years. This immensely helps with planning a company’s future and can even identify problems that it may encounter. Finally, inventing involves creating new solutions to seemingly complex or hard-tosolve problems. Using the vision-

ing plan as a base, inventing is the building itself, providing the executive with a means of reaching the height required to make the vision a reality for the company. One great example of these qualities in action is in the case of Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey. His service extends across more than 6600 miles of roads, 68 parks and neighborhoods, natural or urban constructions. He has been serving the community via his 40 years of award-winning civil engineering experience. During his speech at YLDP, he illustrated to us how he visions his long-term plan for Harris County, along with all the improvements that he would make: crime reduction, sanitation, and roadwork. He also explained how he has to relate and collaborate with many of his coworkers to make his vision of a safer Harris County a reality. Finally, he expresses how he needs to make sense of the busy environment that he needs to work in. It can involve lots of people, property, money, the Harris County and Texas State government, but his ability to work through the potential entanglements in the job allows him to perform proficiently in his line of work.
