Hundreds Walk for Sadhguru’s

‘Save Soil’ Initiative

Sugar Land: On this past bright and sunny Fathers Day weekend of June 18-19, over 16,000 people from all walks of life joined together in over sixty cities across North and South America to walk for Soil! Walkers of every age and background, enjoying a 3 to 5 km stroll to create awareness of a silently brewing crisis: soil degradation. In Sugar Land, the walkathon was held at Town Center on Saturday, June 18 early in the morning along a trial marked by traffic cones and volunteers. Participants also took part in a dance aerobics as well aas heard from organizers about the rapidly growing need for soil conservation. Kids enjoyed getting henna tatoos and took part in several games. All food comes from a single source: the soil. However, over the past 150 years, more than half of all planetary soil has been lost. Currently, 50% of U.S. soil and 75% of European soil lacks sufficient organic content. It is predicted by scientists that by 2045, the world’s population will grow to 9.3 billion people, yet the world will produce 40% less food than it is producing now. Save soil is a initiative launched by global leader and visionary Sadhguru. This a worldwide effort to reach and educate over 3.5 billion people around the globe, by rallying citizen support and advocating policies that support soil health. Several State Officials, local physicians, business CEOs and musicians enthusiastically participated The approach of this movement has been unique in that it fosters involvement through inclusiveness, joy and inspiration. By mobilizing people now, change is possible and we can make it happen by coming together as one voice. Visit savesoil.org to learn more.

Akshaya Patra Operates Largest Mid-day Meal Program in India Houston: The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a secular, notfor-profit organization that cooks, transports and serves 1.8 million midday meals to school children in India. Nearly every day, the Akshaya Patra Foundation serves 19,257 schools across 14 states and two union territories in India. We believe food is the fuel the body needs to function optimally. Even if students are sitting in ivyleague classrooms, the lessons will not make sense if they have not eaten in the past 24 hours. This is what happens to countless children in India. Children drop-out of school because they need to work to support themselves and their families. Their inability to access even one nutritional meal each day severely limits their capacity to concentrate in the classroom and receive a proper education. To help mitigate this crisis, Akshaya Patra provides a hospitable environment and the resources necessary to help children succeed at school. Our program has been proven to increase the net enrollment ratio (especially for girls), attendance, and performance levels of students in primary grades. We work closely with the De-

partment of Food Sciences at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign and The National Institute of Health and Family Welfare in India to design a vegetarian menu that contains the optimal balance of lipids, micronutrients, calories and proteins that growing children need for healthy development. The menu also caters to the preferences of the local palate and is continuously refined for taste and nutrition. Meals are often supplemented with peanut butter paste, fortified rice and other innovative ways of improving caloric and nutrient value. Dessert is served once a week. Children attending Akshaya Patra schools come from lowincome families who typically make less than $2.00 per day and are unable to afford vegetables, grains, and milk — basically, the bare necessities a child needs to grow. We provide unlimited food — and second and third helpings

are always available. Frequently, younger siblings of students come to school at mealtime or students pack leftovers in containers to take home. The Akshaya Patra Foundation operates 61 kitchens across 14 states and two union territories in India. All of our kitchens operate at ISO 21 standards and 21 have been ISO certified. With frugal innovation, Akshaya Patra’s centralized kitchens cook between 10,000 to 250,000 meals within six hours prioritizing innovation, efficiency and safety. We employ 7,300 people, 30% of which are women. Cooking to consumption time is four hours or less. We have adopted Six Sigma, Kaizen, blockchain, IoT technologies and follow stringent quality control measures and procurement practices based on standards adapted from the Food Safety Standards Act 2006 (FSSA). In locations where difficult geo-

graphical terrain does not support the centralized kitchen model, we have successfully created a decentralized model where women from the local area cook up to 5,000 meals daily. This model provides rural women with a sustainable source of income, thus helping them break the cycle of poverty. A culture of innovation and improvement has ensured that Akshaya Patra can effectively scale production to reach more children. The Akshaya Patra Vision & Mission Vision: No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger. Mission: To feed five million children by 2025. Awards: ICAI Gold Shield Award for “Excellence in Financial Reporting” for seven consecutive years since 2008. Akshaya Patra is the only NGO

in India to be in the ICAI Hall of Fame. Charity Navigator’s highest 4 Star Award for Financial Health and Transparency. Awarded as the BBC World Service’s Global Food Champion 2019. Accountability: Large portion of the donation funds go towards feeding children Small percentage goes towards overhead costs The Akshaya Patra Foundation advocates a culture of constant improvement and learning. Three independent studies on the Akshaya Patra midday meal program by Harvard Business School and Nielsen have shown our program’s success, including: the number of children fed; weight gained; improved academic & physical performance; increased school enrollment, retention & attendance and increased social equity. Donate: There are many ways to contribute any donations to Akshaya Patra USA. If you are interested in donating please email us at apusa. houston@gmail.com The Houston chapter has organized a fundraiser event on Saturday August 13, 2022. Please contact Ashok Shah at 832-518-9938 via text or phone for further information.
