When a love foryourpartnerextends to a love forthe communityin whichyou live
the practice of yoga.
BYANU SHIVARAM
T.hedate 14 February, just passed, marks a daywhen couples profess their love for each other. On this particular day, Valentine's Day, love is celebrated with candlelight dinners, moonlight cruises, picnics in the park and romantic dates. Ir is a special day of great commercial possibilities: greeting cards, roses, chocolates, teddy bears, even diamonds. Many couples declare their love from rooftops, \vith posters and banners and even from helicopters.
And then there are couples who celebrate each day as Valentine's Day. Their love is silenc, their dreams and goals are similar, and they work cogecber for the common good, selAessly giving their ti.me and energy for the benefit of the communicy. They enjoy working together and cherish each other's company. They do not crave recognition and awards; the joy of togetherness, and sharing cheir time and skills wich the community, is re\vard enough. This is a tribute to the silenc love of such couples.
Yogic duo
On weekends when most people would rather sleep in or enjoy breakfast in bed, Suresh and Chhaya Khatav are out and about in Sydney suburbs from six in the morning teachingyoga and helpingpeople lead healthier lives.
"Yoga is an ancient discipline char benefits the mind, body and soul and helps us balance our energies," says Suresh. Suresh is the founder of Spirit of India. Spirit of India is a not-for-profit organisation fotmded twelve years ago, which promotes good health, spirituality, charity and community awareness through
Presently, Snresh and Cbhaya, along with a dedicated team of volunteers, teach yoga co about 350 people in 14 centres across Sydney. This includes children, adults and senior citizens. So far, they claim to have taughtyoga to 6000 people in Sydney. Spiric of India is well-known also for organising seminars, symposia, workshops and lectures on self-improvement and healch and well-being.Suresh is respected for his dedication and his knowledge of yoga and affectionately called Suresh Yogi by the communicy.
Suresh learnc yoga in Thane, MaharashITa, and starred reaping the benefits of a yogic lifescyle from a young age. He wanted to share chis skill with the communicy in Australia, and the first person he mrned to for support and guidance was his wife Chhaya. A keen yoga enthusiast herself Chhaya was supportive of Suresh's initiatives from day one. \xrhile Suresh goes from one class to another, Chhaya follows him, true to her name, like a shadow assisting him to set up the class, gecting equipment ready for him to demonstrate the variousyogic cleansing techniques. She supports thewomen nor only through the asana practices but also through personal, physical and medicalissues.
The adminisITative responsibilities of this growing organisation also fall on Chhaya's capable shoulders.
"Our dreams were not achieved easily," recalls Chhaya, narrating the experiences and challenges in setting up the yoga classes. When they arrived in this country in 2001, Suresh knew yoga but did not have the mastery to reach it and was eager to gain that. He decided to go co India to learn yogain-depth so he would be able to instruct. He could not get leave of absence from work, so he resigned from his job.
While in India he learnt about a veteran yoga practioner in Australia, lvlr Patankar. As soon as he returned toSydney, he called Mr Pacankar from the airporc wanting co discuss yoga classes with him! Seeing
Suresh's enclrnsiasm and determination, Patankar agreed to support him in his endeavours. After passing through che maze of bureaucracy, they finally booked a hall, discribmed pamphlets and announced the inauguration of the yoga class.
"After waiting for three hours, one person turned up!" recounts Chl1aya.
The indomitable spirit of this couple shone through in the early days and they wanted to share this spiric, the Spirit of India, with others. They soldiered on, tmdaunted by the cold response, as they were determined co spread the message of this wonderful practice, yoga. Mr Parankar guided and supported them in the initial stages until he left for India.l\fr SLtrveji, the general secretary of Ambika Yoga Kutir in Mumbai, continues to provide support and guidance to Spirit of India and all its activities.
One day, as the Khatavs wall,ed past the Epping Seniors Club, it struck Suresh that seniors could benefit from yoga, especially Pranayama, a series of bread1ing cechniques. He walked in, spoke to the club president and offered his services. Reluctantly, the club agreed to let him teach yoga if he could do it free! Suresh agreed but due to his working hours could not fie in the senior classes on weekday mornings. Sensinghis disappoinanenc, Chhaya offered to seep in and run tl1e yoga classes for seniors from various cultural backgrounds. After five years, she scill travels three hours by public transport to come to Epping and run classes for the elderly. This is now one of the most popular activities of the seniors club and chey will accepc no other teacher than d1eir own Chbayaji!
"We can be happy only if our families, our communities and people around us are happy," says this yogic duo in rn1ison, rolling cheir yoga mats together. "We are doing om best to spread che light of yoga and infuse people with a spirit of joy and well-being."
Language lovers
They say you can take a person our of bis cotmITy bm you can't take his country out of him. Wbenyou migrate to a new cotmITy you carry the culture, traditions and more importantly the language with you. So did r arayan Kanakpura and Rajalakshmi, when they migrated to Australia as newlyweds in 1995.
A talented couple interested in music, dance, d1eatre, language and literature, they were naturallydrawn to che activities of the Kannada community. A born leader, r arayan started organising cultural activities for both youngsters and adults.Their house started becoming the hub of Kannada activities, and perhaps the couple's culinary skills added co d1e attraction in no small measure!
Many Kannada familieswantingtheir children to learn their mothertongue approached Rajalakshmi, Raji as she is popularly known, and Narayan. They starred Kannada classes in the drawing room, d1e number of students increased and d1e classes spilled into their garage. Today the Kannada classes are conducted in commm1icy halls in Liverpool, Parramatta and Epping. The annual crash courses in Kannada are extremely popular and every year 20-30 people enrol in this course to learn the basics of a sweet and r:ich language.
In 2005, d1ey escablished Sugama Gana San1aja, a platform forlocal singers to perform in public. Many are d1e r,'lienced singers who have performed at their karaoke evencs and gained popularity in che community. Narayan and Raji put together popular songs and hand stapled d1em into books for distribution ac these events!
"The success of the first musical evening gave us the confidence to expand our activities," reminsences Raji, looking back on the multitude of events they have organised togecher.
By popular demand, d1e Sugama

THE GHAZI ATTACK
STARRING: Rana Daggubati, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Taapsee Pannu
DIRECTOR: Sankalp Reddy
A bigger mystery than the sinking of the submarine during the 1971 India andPakistan war that this film so bravely recreates, is Rana Daggubati's onesingle immovable expression that he has been holding steadfast on his impressive face eversince he graced
the large screen with his imposing physical presence.
It's an expression of scowling machismo, a ratification of masculinity and a rejection of all humbug, and that includes changing the expression according to the emotionalneed of the moment.
Rana plays Lieutenant Commander Mun Varma. And if you think this is as a filmy as a hero's name can get, wait till I you see the torrent of patriotic jingoism that hits you straight in the face (though I alas, not in the guts). The national

anthem (which had already played before the film begins, as per the new rules) played in the film before the end when all the characters first sang Saare jahaan se achcha and then just to drive in the point, Jana gana mana.
Confused, a few members of the audience got to their feet while the others remained seated. Even before the confusion could be sorted, the national anthem played again, this time as part of the background score, and then the film ended in a furry with the tricolour held high.
All of this is crammed into the last 15 minutes of this commendable but underwhelming tale of war-time valour. The film editor- the brilliant Sreekar Prasad - cuts to the chase. There is little room for diversion as the men on board the submarine attend to the task of fobbing off the enemy's advances. The marginal characters barely get in a word edgewise and before that scared lieutenant gets the first bite of a banana into his trembling mouth, the siren goes off.
A sense of urgency is preserved throughout, with the actors pitching in their most sincere efforts to make the proceedings look authentic.
But it's a losing battle. In a manner of speaking.
Nevertheless, debutant director Sankalp Reddy must be lauded for his vast research on the subject. He lays out the blueprint of the underwater and so far underground, battle between India and Pakistan, with diligence and sincerity. But the director's epic vision is constantly defeated by the lack of financial sources.
Budgetary constraints show up in embarrassing spurts in this soggy and damp underwateradventure. It's in the way the actors are huddled on one set depicting the interior of a submarine, or
in the way the sea and the exchange of torpedos between the enemy countries plays itself out, that the film exposes its crippling limitations.
While the Indian side of the battleline comes off with a fair amount of flair thanks to accomplished actors like Atul Kulkarni, Kay Kay Menonand some unknown faces that play fringe soldiers who are neverat sea (no pun intended), the Pakistani soldiers helmed by Rahul Singh (who snarls and snaps like an Alsatian denied its daily meat) are pure caricature.
ThePakistani soldiers are bathed in the colour green (in case we miss their cultural complexion). They refer to one another as Janaab (in case we don't get the point even after the proceedings go green).
Once we ignore the glaring generalizations and the broadly sketcheddefinitions of valour and patriotism, The Ghazi Attack comes across as a film that means well. The director has a f rm command over the underwater escapades, more so than the power-tussle in which the commanding officers are shown to be embroiled.
By the time Rana gives his big speech on sacrifices that soldiers make so that we civilians can sleep peacefully, the narrative has exhausted its ability to hold our attention. The adventures of The Ghazi Attack are intriguing, and even exciting to begin with. But after a while, repeated shots of torpedoes beingfired from both sides gets repetitive.
War, as we all know, is an exercise in futility. This should not be the case with films aboutwar. And God knows Chetan Anand and J.P. Dutta have shown us how spellbinding war cinema can be, given the required resources.

Dejected with the tum ofevents, Hina takes a drastic step thatjolts Jolly. Ridden with guilt and to undo what he did, hefiles a Public Interest Litigation. How hegains redemption and prominence, formsthe crux ofthetale.
Thescript meanderswithsome offbeat scenes and songs. Thefirst half toils on establishingthe characters and the Holi song in particular is incongruoustothe plot.
Thisfeel-good satire seemsto have lost its lustre. Notthatthis is a bad film, butit does tread on a predictable terrain with a plethora ofpoignant moments, some powerful ones. Some ofthescenesseemforced with comedy, some ofthe parts are laugh-out-loud funny, but beneath the humouristhe subtle criticism ofthe corruptsystem which can be easily manipulated. The courtroom drama is indeed interesting
albeitweary and it lacks the soul of its previous edition.
But, Akshay Kumar asJagdishwar Mishra isthe raison d'etre ofthisfilm. Though he istoooldto play a novice and a bit unconvincingwhile indulging in buffoonery, heneverthelesscarriesthe film squarely on his shoulders exuding star charisma.
Huma Qureshi as his whisky-drinking and Gucci-wearingwife Pushpa Pandey is competent. Buther characteris an appendagetothe plot which offers nothing but a wholesome appeal to Jolly's character.
In supporting roles- brilliantly essayed - areSaurabh Shukla asJustice Sundertal Tripathi, Annu Kapoor as the defendantlawyerPramod Mathur, Sayani Gupta as Hina Siddiqui -the pregnant lady seekingjustice, Kumud Mishra asthe sly and ambitious Inspector Suryaveer Singh and Avijit Dutt as Police CommissionerS.S. Paul.
Unfortunately, Manav Kaul in a minisculerole as Hina'shusband Iqbal Qassim iswasted.
With excellent production values and good cinematography, the film is a typical Hindi blockbusterwith an easy going demeanour. Nevertheless, the film is an entertainer.
TroyRibeiro
factory blastattheearliest, sothathe may claim the insurance.
Thinkingthatshe has a puppet in Arjun Mishra, the investigating officer from the National InvestigatingAgency (NIA), she hands overthe case to him. Buthowtheirplans backfire formsthe crux ofthetale.
While the intention ofthe film is clear, the plot and thescreenplay lack depth. The narrative is amateurishly mounted making the entire attempt futile. The tackling ofthe investigation seemsvery superficial, packed with hollow, rhetoric dialogues.
Alsothe constantallusion to Ajay Devgan'sSingham, makes the entire script seem tacky. It loses its seriousness, as it seemsto caterto the front benchers.
The genre fluctuatesfrom an investigativethrillerto a comedy with natural ease throwingthe emotional quotient outofthewindow.
Naseeruddin Shah asthe disciplinarian ParabjitWalia lacks the charisma and thegravitas required for the character. He is himself and does notadd any nuanceto his role. He is a bit of a disappointment. Also, his character, painted in manyhues, emits a bland image and herethe fault lies withthe director and the script writer.
Arshad Warsi asthe Investigating
officerArjun
Mishra is charming, but he is limited by his role.
Divya Dutta essayingthe role ofRamandeep Braitch, steals the showwith her powerful demeanour. She bitesinto her rolewith the ferociousness ofa tigress and leaves nostone unturned to turn tables in her favour. She excels asthe fagellating politician.
Sharad Kelkar as Paddy is perfunctory. Rumana Molla as Parabjit's daughter Riya Walia and Sagarika Ghatge as Maya Singh aresincere.
With moderate production values, the flm is astutely mounted. The backgroundscores and songsintegrate seamlessly into the narration. The
camera work and editing, especially thetransition in certainscenes, seem mediocre.
The film is a sincere and decent attempt bythe director in her maiden venture.

FULFILLING IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS: RAHUL BOSE
Rahul Bose is back in a directorial role after a 16-year break. His new flm Poorna is basedonPoorna Malvath, the youngest girl in historyto climb Mount Everest. She was 13 when she accomplished this feattwo years ago. Rahul claims he was first approached withthe project as an actor. Butwhen the project got shelved, he took it on as his own. Of course he still acts in the film, in the role that was first intended for him: Poorna's coach and mentor.
The actor-director claims he was drawn to the film solely because of young Poorna. She comes from a disadvantaged background, but is uastonishingly single-minded and determined". She hails not from a mountainous region but from flatlands, which make the activity alien to her. But she put her mind to this seemingly impossible task, and wentall outto achieve it.
A young Telangana girl Aditi lnamdar plays the main lead.
Rahul also promises some stunning footage from the summit of the Everest. Rahul's first film as director was way back in 2001, a film called Everybody Says I'm Fine. In the interim, the 'thinking woman's actor' Rahul has been a regular on the speaking circuit (having spoken on cinema at Yale, secularism at the Oxford, and on gender equality at Harvard) and has impressed in offbeat films such as Di/ Dhadakne Do.
Poorna is setto release in March.
WOULDLOVESARATO BELAUNCHEDBYKARAN JOHAR:SAIFALIKHAN
Bollywood starSaif Ali Khan says he wouldlove his daughter Sara Ali Khan to be launchedas an actress in the film industry by filmmaker KaranJohar. He said in a statement, ul wouldlove Sara to be launched by Karan Johar. He is one ofthe bestthat we have. I keep reading various reports where I am supposedly averse to her getting launched by Karan because she will apparently become another Alia Bhatt. I would just like to say that if Sara becomesas successful as Alia is, thenit will be a matter ofprideand happiness for all of us."
The grapevine has itthatSara, who is Saifs daughter with his former wife AmritaSingh, will make her foray into Bollywood with Karan's Student Of The Year sequel.

ISKANGANA'SJULIABASED ONNADIA,ORISSHENOT?
The biggest buzz in Bollywoodthese days is Rangoon, the Kangana Ranaut-starrer thatlooks very much like it is based on FearlessNadia aka Hunterwali, or Perth actress Mary Evans who wentto Bollywood in the 1940s. Just like the stuntwoman ofthe old films, Kangana's characterJulia is a daredevil: she brandishes a whip, wears a mask, dons black tights and boots and hat, andrides a horse; she grows close to a Parsi film-maker, and, apparently, likes to say 'Bloody hell'.
Butnow the members of the Vishal Bharadwaj directed team sayno, their character isnotbased on any character living or dead.
Wadia Movietone, the makers ofthe Fearless Nadia series, have taken Rangoon to courst for copyright infringement.
The film is due to be released on 24 Feb, but a court order could see it delayed.
APARSHAKTI:GOINGFROM STRENGTHTOSTRENGTH

The younger brother of Ayushmann Khurana, Aparshakti has just come off a grand success with Dangal, where he played an adorable cousinto thePhogat
sisters. He nailed it with his physical fitness and Haryanvi accent.
"I never expectedmy character in Dangal would be admired so much," he revealed. "I thoughtpeople would be excited for Aamir Khan, thetwo girls, andtheirjourney of becoming wrestlers. However, my characterOmkar was appreciated as much asthe other characters."
He added, "People have startedtaking me seriously."
Aparshakti startedhis career in stage, and worked as a radio jockey andTV anchor.

She claims she is scaredof heights. But we just saw Sayani Gupta jump offa 40-footbuildingin herlatest f ick Johnny LLB 2!
It wasn't easy, butthe young actor managedto pull itoff.
She credits itall to co-star Akshay Kumar who we allknow is quitetheTom Cruise when it comes to doing his own stunts.
"When I saw the stuntperson do the jump, I gotverynervous. It was not pretty at all. But I still wantedto do it. The action directorParvez Shaikh was tryingto keep me calm and I was like 'I don'twantto be scared, but do I really have a choice!?"
That's when Akshay, everthe mentor and guide, offered help.
"He gave me some simple tips which made it much easier. I am grateful to him for being helpful, calm and such a master of stunts.Thanksto him, I could jump with perfect calm!"

Black is beautiful
DEAR AUNTYJI
I have been married forfive years - it was alove marriage Lately, I have begun to notice a problem You see Auntyji my husband is a very handsome, tall, fair North Indian He looks like a Bollywood star -and he is builtlike an action hero Now I am from the south, and while I am fairly slender and tall, I am quite dark skinned When people gazeat my husband's good looks, I am concerned that they are startled at my lack of beauty when they finally glance at me I can see it intheir eyes. It's as though they are thinking, what is this kaafi ka/ooti doing with that chickna. I am beginning to develop a complex I feel jealous of the women gazing at my husband with their big cow eyes. What should I do Auntyji? This is beginning to erode my self-esteem When I talk to my beloved about this, he tells me that I am the most beautiful woman in the world and I should stop worrying about these meaningless things Can you please help me?
AUNTYJI SAYS
Oh my little padma lakshmi, my little kaali niraali. You need to get yourself some kaali ka/ooti pride going. Haven't you seen how beautiful Naomi Campbell is considered? What about Lupita Nyongo? In this country, dark equals exotic and that equals beautiful. You are already tall, slender and dark
- so you tick all the boxes for an exotic beauty. Start by seeing what your husband sees in you, and to downplay your beauty is calling into question your husband's love for you. Respect his views, and start respecting yourself. You can't change your dark skin. Be like Krishna - he did not apologise for his! Also, if you are walking around in a faded, frumpy sa/warkameezwith hair pulled back like an IT worker, and not even kaajal on your nayan, then of course you will feel ugly beside your husband. Go and get your hair styled. Put on some lip gloss. Wear clothes that enhance your figure. Then, when you walk down the street with your he-man, you will leave people withno choice but to stare and say, who is this apsara walking downthestreet with that rajkumar? Goodness, this woman must be a beauty queen - just look at her!
See, beauty is not just about your skin colour or features. It's everything. It's your clothes, your confidence, your demeanour, your gratitude for the blessings you have. So stop looking at your kaa/a rung as anything less than perfect. Get yourself your kaali kalooti pride, and strut down the street like you own it.
Weird celebrity baby names
DEAR AUNTYJI
So, Auntyji, what are your thoughts on Kareena and Saif calling their baby boy Taimur? Why would they call him that, and don't you think that it's a little inappropriate seeing the historical significance of that name? All our relatives are having robust discussions about this and I was hoping for your insight. I'm looking forward to your wisdom on this matter
AUNTYJI SAYS
My dearest gulabo, if you and your rishtedar have nothing better to do with yourlives than discuss the name of a bub, then the world is indeed doomed. Seriously, robust discussions about this inane topic? Have you perhaps considered discussing more interesting like how to get gender pay parity or solving the Syrian crisis or how to get Trump to stop harping on about immigrants? Really, do you guysalso watch the Kardashians or The Bachelor on TV? Ok, you are giving all immigrants a bad name if this is your pastime. As fornaming of babies, Kareena and Saif could have named their baby anything they wanted - it's really no one's business. History tells that historical figures all have shades of grey when viewed with a certain perspective. For example, there are multiplelittle Stalins running about at recess without a care in the world in primary schools all over Kerala and Bangladesh.Do
you have issues with this? You should - perhaps you ought to go on a crusade to stopnamingIndianchildrenafter Russian mass murderers. And closer to home, how many lndiras do you know? Most of them would be in their 3Os even - but at least they were born, which is more than one can sayfor the victims of the transistor radio scandal. Enough said on that. Let little Taimur be. He is, after all the grandson of the Nawab. He is a chhota nawab. Show him some respect, you peasant.
