NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

The beautiful season has begun in Qatar. The cold breeze in the evenings, make us feel great and it is the best time to sit out and introspect over a cup of tea, about the purpose of our lives.

We joined toastmasters as the first step towards our betterment.

Now it’s time to evaluate whether we have gone a step higher or we are still stay put. We all need to share this responsibility to work together with each other for realising our goals. Let us all work together in the pursuit of excellence by becoming effective communicators and great leaders. Of all the roles we play, our dedication and actions should echo the purpose of our lives. Page 4 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear ICTMs It seems like it was only yesterday that I took over the leadership of this wonderful club, along with the Excom team. But we have already reached half time, ... almost.

During these six months, we've added some wonderful moments in our club, that are now frozen in time for posterity. The merriment we had during the 10th anniversary celebrations certainly tops the chart. The joy of work together with all of you, in so President —TM Surya Narayanan

many different ways, in the lead-up to the celebrations is right up there too. My sin-

cere thanks to every one of you for showing solidarity and emphatically establishing this is OUR CLUB and we're in it TOGETHER. We now have a DTM of our own, in Dr. Sampath Sowrirajan. He's a member of four clubs in Qatar itself, and a few elsewhere, and is equally passionate about all the clubs, including Doha Advanced Toastmasters Club, of which he's the President. So it's our privilege to get the honour of completing the formalities to get him the Distinguished Toastmaster title, which he rightfully earned.

With the ACB achievement of TM Nirmala Raghuraman, and five of our EXCOM members attending the second leg of the Club Officers Training held recently, we've notched up six of the ten DCP goals. So we're now officially a Distinguished Club. But this is not our destination, but just an intermediate station. Our goal is to retain the President's Distinguished Club status.

We've also got four new members during this six months period, including ADGM, TM Nirlep, as a dual member. On this front again, our target is to break the 30 members' barrier before the end of this term. This is possible, only if all members actively promote our club, bring guests to our meetings, and engage the guests in such a way that would convince them to become members.

Our club member, and Past President TM Joseph Stanley made us all proud when he was appointed as ADGET of Division Q. He has already shown his mettle by successfully organizing the Back to Basics training programme.

Our Immediate Past President TM Anand Lashkari needs a special mention, for getting a sponsor for our Division, for the second consecutive year. He has also created a new website for our club, almost single-handedly. We are fortunate to have such dedicated members in our club.

We now get into the ‘happening’ period of the term, what with the Club Contests just round the corner, to be followed by the Area Contests, Division Contests etc. I hope we’ll be able to repeat the stupendous achievement in the Area Contests last year, when our club members stood first in all the four categories.

By the time I write to you all in the next issue, we would have found out who will represent our club in the Area Contests. I wish each one of you all the very best for the contests.

The club celebrated its 10th Anniversary in grand style, on 30th October, 2014. The fun-filled event was attended by dignitaries from the toastmaster fraternity in Qatar, and families of the club members.

The past presidents and founder members were felicitated at the meeting.

A toast was raised in honor of the Funder President TM HPS Bhullar.

Children of the club members presented a cultural treat. Past Division â‚Ź Governor DTM Manzoor Moideen conducted an entertaining quiz.

Besides being a nostalgic moment, the event added a few more pleasant memories to cherish, for all those present.

CRITICAL MASS – By TM Surya Narayanan K. CC CL

Public speaking is one form of ‘mass’ communication. Have you heard of the phrase ‘Critical Mass’?

If you haven’t or have forgotten, Critical Mass is the minimum amount of money or number of people required to start or sustain an operation, business, process etc. (source: www.dictionary.com)

While I helped my son with his physics lesson on mass, weight, density etc., I started wondering whether we can think of a ‘critical mass’ for a toastmaster club to sustain and thrive.

I can think of two types of critical masses, when it comes to a toastmaster club. First, the number of members on the rolls of the club and second, the average number of people attending the club meetings. As it turns out, the latter is a function of the former. From my experience in toastmasters over the last two years or so, the average member attendance, in this part of the region is about 60% of total membership strength. Some will be on vacation, some will have official commitments and some others will be sick (of the club?).

As we all know, each member is liable to pay US$ 6.00 per month as membership fees to Toastmasters International (TMI). Usually, the clubs collect this and pay on behalf of the members to TMI. And they charge the members additionally for the meeting venue rent, refreshments, stationery etc. Very few clubs are lucky to get all or some of these free of cost (e.g., corporate clubs).

Now let’s see what is the critical mass for our Indian Club Toastmasters.

Based on my analysis of our club’s revenues and expenditures over the last two years, I’ve found that we need twenty five (25) paid members to run our club in a sustainable manner, without the President or the Excom or founders having to chip in, to keep it afloat.

Interestingly, this number also ties in very nicely with a couple of other essential factors for a club to carry on.

First, a membership strength of 25 means that around 15 members (60%) will be present at any given meeting. An attendance of 18-20 members will enable a club to have a meeting with three project speakers, and all other role players, plus 3-5 table topics speakers, with no one having to double up.

Second, a club with around 25-30 members and meeting twice a month, as we do, can ensure that all members get adequate opportunities to deliver project speeches, educational modules etc., and to take up other meeting roles, and in the process, improve their communication and leadership skills, which is the prime reason for them to join the club.

Let’s not forget the fact that every year, we lose about 15% of members, for various reasons. So membership building will be an ongoing process.

What does all this analysis mean to us?

Our club strength is now 24. So we need to increase it immediately to 25, and ultimately to 30, so that we have the critical mass to ensure that our club can sustain and prosper.

I take this opportunity to request all members to get new members to our club. Let more people benefit from being part of this wonderful movement, as much as we have.

GOING BEYOND THE OK PLATEAU – By TM Ravi Shankar

Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits, “Edison once said. But, is hustling all it takes? Is progress always deliberate? Sometimes genius arrives not by choice but by chance too (pointing at self)….. Wondering!!! My genius was in discovering this topic after struggling to find something interesting and … nearly giving up.

Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time—BAD LUCK. My dear TM’s, Greetings ….....

What do top performers need to reach their goals? Psychologists have helped us in identifying three stages that we pass through in the acquisition of new skills.

We start in the “cognitive stage” during which we’re intellectualizing the task, discovering new strategies to perform better, and making lots of mistakes while focusing consciously on what we’re doing.

Then we enter the “associative stage” which is goal oriented & while we’re making fewer errors we get to do gradually better. Then, we arrive at the “autonomous stage” when we turn on autopilot and move the skill to the back of our proverbial mental filing cabinet and stop paying it conscious attention. This is what 2006 USA Memory Champion & bestselling author cum journalist Joshua Foer calls as OK Plateau. This “OK Plateau” is the point at which our autopilot of expertise confines us to a sort of “comfort zone” & we cease to be proactive towards reaching our goal.

Lot of people climb through the progress stages in pursuit of their goal but give up before or on reaching the “OK plateau” denying the LADY LUCK a chance to SMILE on them.

Former US president Jefferson said, “I am a great believer in LUCK. “The harder I work The more of it I seem to have” We can be comfortable with average level of performance but we have to make ourselves uncomfortable to go beyond the “OK Plateau”& even invite systematic failures to move from ABOVE AVERAGE to EXCELLENT. This FOURTH STAGE is the PINNACLE very few people reach.

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.

One such genius was a famous explorer who started to sail with a vow to reach India, but landed somewhere else.

He declared it as India and claimed it has been never visited by Europeans before. Of course he did not reach where he wanted to!! But his landing led to the creation of the super power we call AMERICA & and HE is still the world’s greatest explorer.

Was Columbus lucky? No What he achieved was a fair reward for his journey going beyond the “OK Plateau”. Stories behind great discoveries & innovations tell us that many of them happened by accident. But the discoverers and innovators behind them toiled for years with passion and THAT gave them the chance to have a DATE with the LADY LUCK. I suggest you all to read the serendipitous stories of “Play Dough” “Post It” Sweet N Low” “Velcro” just to name few.

Let’s now take an actual situation in our toastmaster fraternity which many of you may remember. There were two fabulous humorous speakers A & B, who locked their horns in the Area Contest. After their deliveries, everyone was convinced that speaker A would clinch the title…except for the TIMER, who had to deny the title to speaker A for crossing the time limit.

But can we afford to leave things to chance? Victory awaits him who has everything in order — LUCK.

This is what Edison meant when he said “When you want to get good at something, how you spend your time practicing is far more important than the amount of time you spend.”

To mastering a foreign language……….

To dieting……..

To toastmastering….

Beyond the OK plateau lies the POT OF LUCK, which is missed by most people, because it is dressed in OVERALLS and looks like WORK. There is far more opportunity than there is ability but … BEYOND the OK Plateau.

My dear friends, Luck is only a small minuscule and uncontrollable. It’s just residue of hard work. Once you have experienced the effects and rewards of hard work, Luck willingly climbs aboard in your journey to reach your goal.

If you believe that LUCK is a COROLLARY to HARD WORK, then you are fit to cross the OK PLATEAU. When somebody asks, “How are you?”, we often say, “I am Ok”. After reading this, I hope you realized that OK is NOT QUITE OK.

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger… He was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn’t seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home – not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush.

My Dad didn’t permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished.

He talked freely. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked…and NEVER asked to leave.

More than twentyfive years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents’ den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name…We just call him ‘TV.’

This lovely Loretoite was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata). She graduated with honours in Zoology from Madras (now Chennai). Her love for the English language made her to opt for B.A. in Special English. After her Post graduation in English she completed B.Ed. from Calcutta University.

Although her parents are natives of Kerala, she was brought up in Calcutta so she feels more at home with Bengali culture. She’s happily married to a Chartered Accountant from Delhi who has always been supportive and encouraging in all her endeavors. After completing her Masters in Psychology, she passionately pursued her career as a teacher, first in high schools in India and Dubai and then in colleges in Dubai, Kuwait and Doha.

This mother of two boys and a girl is passionate about literature, dramatics, debating and elocution as well.

Her favorites in Literature are Shakespeare and Rabindranath Tagore. She is an avid reader. Besides, music, counseling, art and gardening are a few of her passions. The best thing about her is that whatever she takes to liking, she dives into it wholeheartedly and that’s the reason behind her success in everything she does.

While she was staying and teaching in Dubai she was introduced to toastmasters at her school. What attracted her to the Toastmasters was the absence of Ego amongst its members. She joined Toastmasters in 1998, took up the role of VP-PR and later on, VP-Ed, and subsequently, Area Governor of Kuwait and Jordan. She was unanimously elected as the Divisional Governor of Jordan and Kuwait but she declined.

Her mentor, DTM Roysten Fernandes, motivated her to participate in the contests and she won the Best Speaker as well as the Vox Populi award in the International Speech contest at the Gulf Toastmasters Annual Convention (GTAC) held at Bahrain in 2001 proclaiming her as the best speaker in the Middle East.

In 2002, she was the runner-up for the International Taped Speech contest (USA). The year 2003 had her being awarded the DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster Award) by the Toastmasters International (USA) – the first lady to have achieved it in the UAE. Gulf.

In Dubai, she worked towards uplifting of the young generation. The first Gavels Club in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait were started by her. Besides the Youth Leadership Programmes she conducted in Dubai & Abu Dhabi, the Corporate Speech Craft Sessions she conducted gained immense popularity in Dubai. She has also conducted seminars on Self Improvement, Time Management, Leadership, Mentoring, Parenting in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which were highly appreciated.

When moved to Abu Dhabi, she joined the Millennium club, with the intention to uplift the dying club. It had just 8 members when she joined and had 40 members when she left. During her tenure there she started two Gavels Clubs. It gave her a deep sense of satisfaction to see the youngsters coming up in the field of communication.

She joined Doha Toastmasters Club when she moved to Qatar, as she had a lot of friends there and she fitted like hand in glove. She is also an active member of the ICC Advanced Club and is the Immediate Past President of the club.

Diction got up, close and personal with DTM Malini Sahni, and here is what she has to say: We all know that women toastmasters, especially in Doha, are extremely less. Did you come across any challenges in making a niche for yourself?

I strongly believe that the Toastmasters is one very big family and wherever I travel By the grace of God, I never felt any abroad, I always bump into a Toastmaster. such challenges; all the male memI interact with the toastmaster friends outbers were very welcoming without side the meetings as well, and the humility any gender differences.

Neither was I that we have learnt from each other, keeps over-pampered for being a woman, nor was us together. made to feel any less than a man. I strongly feel that when it comes to the leadership positions, we see quite a less number of women, primarily due to their elaborate commitments for family, home and career.

How does Toastmastering fit in your daily routine?

I made most of my friends almost all across the Gulf from Toastmasters. So my social circle majorly comprises toastmasters. I strongly believe that the Toastmasters is one very big family and wherever I travel abroad, I always bump into a Toastmaster. I interact with the toastmaster friends outside the meetings as well, and the humility that we have learnt from each other, keeps us together.

How has toastmasters helped you in your personal life?

It has helped me to develop my confidence and ability to face situations in a much better way. I feel I can interact with people in a much better fashion as it has developed me into the personality that stands out in a crowd and I feel at ease in every surrounding. I might refuse to take up a role of a District or Division Governor, but have always gained respect no matter wherever I go. I feel that about 70% credit for all my overall success, I’d like to give to the Toastmasters, that too without putting any lapel pins.

Page Page2020 Tell us about your current role in toastmaster.

I’m more into what I love to do, that is mentoring. This year I have taken the challenge of a Toastmaster Leadership Institute Chair (TLI) for District 20. My role is mainly to interact with the Division Governors of District 20. I’m putting my best efforts in improving the quality of trainings by standardizing the whole process and the content. I’m working very closely with them by taking their feedback every single time.

My idea as a TLI Chair is to see that every division has at least 5-6 trainers. And to fill this vacuum of trainers, I’d like to bring in new faces for conducting the sessions. I’m working on Trainings for Judges, Evaluators, as well as COTs, How to get more members and How to improve Club’s climate, Also, trainings for MCs etc.. By the end of my term, I’ll ensure that there will be sufficient trainers because new comers will not benefit unless we have good trainers.

What will you advise new toastmasters (new joinees) and how can they make best use of it?

I will advise everyone to concentrate on the manuals they have received while joining, and they must ensure that the objectives have to be met every time they give a speech. I request the evaluators to provide genuine feedback based on the objectives as well as the speaker should accept the feedback in the right spirit, otherwise it’s always the speaker, who is at a loss.

PROGRESS REPORT

As we approach the end of the first half of the term 2014-15, our club has attained Distinguished Club status. We have now achieved six out of the ten goals, subsequent to five of our EXCOM members attending the second leg of the Club Officers Training held on 12th December, 2014.

The goals we're pursuing now: 

Four CCs (First goal: Two CCs, Second goal: Two more CCs)  Four new members  One Advanced Communicator We have to achieve at least three of the these four goals to retain its President's Distinguished Club status achieved in the previous term. If everyone everybody chips in, this is very much possible.

Did you know that “English” very fondly known as “the Queen’s language”, has certain words adopted from Indian languages?

      

Few examples are as follows:  Cot from the Hindi word khat meaning a place to sleep. Was imbibed into the English language the 17th century  Bangle from the Hindi word “bhangri” meaning “bracelet”. Came into usage back in the 18th century  Catamaran from the Tamil word “kattumaram” meaning pieces of long wooden tied together as a form of water transport Pandal from Tamil word “pandhal” meaning a temporary place of shelter Coir from the Malayalam word “kayar” meaning fibre from the husk of coconut Bandicoot from the Telugu word “pandi-kokku” meaning a big rat Brahmin from the Sanskrit word “brahman” meaning a priest or a teacher Bungalow from the Hindi word “bhangla” meaning a single storied house (known as villa in Qatar) Jungle from the Hindi word “jangal” meaning a dense forest, came into usage in the 18th century Pyjamas from the Hindi word “payjama” meaning a aset of loose-fitting sleeping clothes, consisting of a jacket and trousers The Queen’s language was thus influenced by Indian languages, and if we browse the internet we can find many more such words which were imbibed into the English language, and are very commonly used, even by native English speakers.

DARING TO BE DIFFERENT Motivational speaker Shiv Khera says successful people “Don’t do different things, but they do things differently.”

However, medical research shows that trying our hands at new things every now and then improves our mental health. And it takes courage to take up challenges, as there are chances of failing.

Two of our club members, TM Nirmala Raghuraman and TM Surya Narayanan chose to tread into unfamiliar terrain recently.

TM Nirmala chose the “Communicatiing on Television” manual, and did a live interview for the project “When you are the host”.

TM Suryanarayanan presented a live demo of how to prepare a healthy salad, in his “Demonstration Talk” project from the “Speaking to Inform” manual.

Both the speakers won appreciation from the evaluators and the audience for their innovation.
