RECIPIENT RICHARD J. “DICK” SCHUL ’69 BSME
This year’s commencement speaker,
Mr. Dick Schul, is a longtime organizational leader who conducted business in over 60 countries worldwide throughout his career. Born and raised in Niagara Falls, New York, Mr. Schul holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Indiana Tech and an MBA from the University of Dayton. Mr. Schul has served on Indiana Tech’s board of trustees since 2012, currently serving as the board’s vice chair.
After graduating from Indiana Tech, Mr. Schul began his career at Westinghouse Electric, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, quality assurance, and marketing. He then moved to Emerson Electric, where his 32-year career, from 1981 to 2013, saw him rise quickly from product manager to director, vice president, and then president in 1990 at Emerson’s ALCO Controls Division.
Mr. Schul was promoted to president of air moving motors in 1996, and group vice president over several motor divisions in 2000, overseeing 6,500 employees, and annual sales exceeding $700 million. In 2004, he was named group vice president of Emerson Climate Technologies, the role in which he served until his retirement in 2013.
Mr. Schul’s international business experience includes managing Emerson’s P&L in the Middle East and Africa, with headquarters in Dubai, UAE and a call center in Manila, Philippines. At the same time, he led Emerson’s corporate sales functions. He developed and implemented a mentoring program called LEAD, through which he mentored high-potential managers at Emerson, preparing them for career success and future promotions. After retirement, Mr. Schul created his own management consulting group, mentoring emerging leaders and companies.
Throughout his career, Mr. Schul has given back to his industry and community through volunteering and charitable work. He served on the board of directors of the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) for more than 25 years, receiving AHRI’s Richard Schultz Award in 2008 and its Distinguished Service Award in 2011 for his dedicated service to the industry.
Mr. Schul is an active member of Ascension Catholic Parish in Chesterfield, Missouri, and a board member of St. Joseph Educational Ministry. He has served on the boards of the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce, the North County Boy Scouts of Greater St. Louis, and the St. Joseph’s Institute for the Deaf. He served on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Missouri and Kansas for 12 years, and as a mentor for underprivileged young adults at Boys Hope Girls Hope. In 2013, he was honored with the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award in the greater St. Louis area the from American Philanthropic Foundation.
Mr. Schul’s passions include his family, faith, charitable work, traveling, and golf. He and his wife Geri have been married for nearly 55 years and have two children, Brad and Angela, and four grandchildren.

Indiana Tech will always be interested in helping you reach your career goals. As an alum, you have free lifetime access to career guidance and assistance through Tech’s Career Center. Even after graduation, the Career Center can assist you with matters such as resumes, cover letters, interview preparation, networking, and job search strategy.
If you’d like assistance, please schedule some time to meet with a career coach. You can make an appointment through Handshake or email careercenter@indianatech.edu. Career coaches can meet with alumni in person or virtually.

THE TRADITION OF ACADEMIC COMMENCEMENT
Graduate Degree Hoods
In antiquity, the first educational degrees were probably conferred at a general gathering of the student body. As early as 500 B.C., the medical school at Athens, Greece, for example, awarded inscribed lead plates at a formal degree-granting ceremony. Parchment diplomas eventually replaced lead plates, and graduates may have received degrees written on a sheepskin parchment as early as 848 A.D.
Master’s degrees and doctoral degrees were awarded by medieval European universities. The first recorded baccalaureate degree was given by the University of Paris in the 13th century. Originally, the degree was a license to teach.
In America, the colonists used the European universities as models for the schools which they founded, and European graduation traditions were adopted. The first American college was Harvard College, founded Oct. 28, 1636. The first Bachelor of Science degree was conferred by Wesleyan University (Connecticut) in 1838; the bachelor’s degree now is the standard American degree which signifies completion of a four-year degree program.
All degree candidates, college officials, faculty and dignitaries are attired in traditional medieval cap and gown. Black is the standard gown color; however, commencement participants are entitled to wear distinctive tassels on their caps or hoods of various colors over their gowns.
The colors allocated to the various fields of learning have been largely standardized in the United States by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, and accepted by the American Council on Education in its Academic Costume Code. The codified colors associated with Indiana Tech’s different academic disciplines are:

Honor Cords
Indiana Tech recognizes three levels of outstanding academic achievement by undergraduates when a degree is earned. The level of distinction is indicated on transcripts. These students are wearing gold honor cords.
***Summa Cum Laude (with greatest honor) GPA of 3.90 and above
**Magna Cum Laude (with great honor) GPA of 3.70 and above
*Cum Laude (with honor) GPA of 3.50 and above
Alpha Chi Honor Society
Region V, Indiana Lambda, Chapter 279
Alpha Chi is a national coeducational academic honor society for all disciplines. Since 1922 its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors and requires confirmation by faculty. The Indiana Tech chapter began in 1986 and holds an induction ceremony for new members each fall. Honorees wear medallions with sapphire and green ribbon.

Red, white and blue cords signify military service.
Cords, Medallions, Sashes, and Stoles
Many nationally recognized honor societies and student organizations designate academic achievement with cords, stoles, and/or medallions. For example, many international graduates are wearing stoles that represent the colors of their nation’s flag.
