ISU HOMECOMING KICKOFF 2017

Dr. Mike Licari

Dr. Deborah Curtis

Indiana State selects finalists for president Two finalists, both with ties to Indiana State University, have been named in the search for the institution’s 12th president. The finalists are Deborah Curtis, provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central Missouri, and Michael Licari, who has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Indiana State since July 2015. Curtis earned her Ph.D. from Indiana State and also taught at the former University School. In addition to serving as provost of Indiana State, Licari has a son who is a freshman at the university. “We are very pleased to have two incredibly strong candidates for this critically important position, both of whom understand and fully support Indiana State’s mission and both of whom we feel have the skills and ex-

perience to be successful as its next president. We were prepared for the possibility of three or four finalists, but in the end these two candidates distinguished themselves among all others,” said Jeff Taylor, chair of the presidential search committee and secretary of the ISU Board of Trustees. The search drew a strong pool of more than 70 candidates, Taylor added. The search committee selected the finalists after off-site interviews with nine semi-finalists. Licari’s interview will take place on Oct. 25-26, while Curtis will visit campus on Nov. 1-2. In addition to a series of private interview sessions with the trustees and other campus groups, each candidate will have a dessert reception with community and volunteer leaders and open sessions for staff, students and faculty.

The schedules for these sessions are: Oct. 25, 2017 (Dr. Michael Licari) 1:15-2:45 p.m. Dessert reception with community and volunteer leaders Magna Carta Room, Federal Hall (Scott College of Business) 3-4 p.m. Candidate presentation and open session for faculty Heritage Ballroom, Tirey Hall Oct. 26, 2017 (Dr. Michael Licari) 3-4 p.m. Open session for staff Heritage Ballroom, Tirey Hall 4-5 p.m. Open session for students Heritage Ballroom, Tirey Hall Nov. 1, 2017 (Dr. Deborah Curtis) 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. Dessert reception with community and volunteer leaders

ISU professor discusses Las Vegas shooter’s disposition Ashton Hensley Reporter The biggest massacre in American history occurred when Stephen Paddock opened fire on concert goers in Las Vegas the night of October 1. Debates erupted after the shooting, questioning the laws regarding gun control as well as Paddock’s motivations and if it were an act of terrorism. “Everyone (law enforcement, the media, society) is looking for a definitive reason for why Paddock did this, but there is no smoking gun/firm reason that law enforcement or society will be able to find for the Las Vegas massacre...he was mis-

erable, suffering from mental illness, this has been in motion for quite some time and some recent event put him over the edge to actualize his plans,” Jennifer Murray, associate professor of criminology said. It is possible that Paddock could be labelled as a lone wolf terrorist, though Murray said this is not to be confused with the type of lone wolf terrorism that has a political agenda. “Stephen Paddock is a lone wolf mass killer type that tends to kill out of their own personal needs that is usually tied to their poor sense of self, loneliness, lack of any social life etc. and what/who they feel/blame is the reason for their terrible life

or those that they see as having shunned them,” Murray said. Murray said that this type of killer normally leaves some kind of archival trail such as writings or pictures of themselves holding weapons. “Thus far, it does not appear that Paddock has left such a trail however, he will have left valuable clues on the computers he used as to what websites he focused on a digital imprint will always be left behind,” Murray said. It is believed that Paddock had been planning this massacre for some time in a process Murray called “human derailment”. “At some point they blame

others for their own miserable life and they have long term fantasies of brutal payback that temporarily puts a band-aid on their fractured identity,” Murray said. Criminology graduate students Aly Bennett and Kirk Moore do not think that Paddock should be considered a lone wolf terrorist. “The definition of terrorism is to intimidate people, which was not the shooter’s purpose. He did not have a particular grievance, which terrorists always have,” Moore said. Bennett said that she does not think that Paddock fits the pro-
