WELCOME

OUR MISSION Live theatre connects us to meaningful issues in our lives and has the power to shape the human experience. The mission of the Indiana Repertory Theatre is to produce top-quality, professional theatre and related activities, providing experiences that will engage, surprise, challenge, and entertain people throughout their lifetimes, helping us build a vital and vibrant community. OUR VISION The Indiana Repertory Theatre will be a life-long destination of choice for an ever-expanding audience of all ages and backgrounds seeking enjoyable and meaningful experiences. Using theatre as a springboard for both personal reflection and community discussion, our productions and programs will inspire our neighbors to learn about themselves and others. As an arts leader in the state of Indiana, the IRT’s goal is to make Indiana a dynamic home of cultural expression, economic vitality, and a diverse, informed, and engaged citizenry. YOUR INVESTMENT Because of your support, the IRT has grown to become the largest nonprofit theatre in the state of Indiana. As we look back on 46 seasons of producing professional theatre and arts education programming, we are grateful to count you as partners in all that we do. Because of your generosity, we are able to continue providing our community with art that enlightens and entertains.

DEAR FRIENDS,

We are excited to welcome you to the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s 2017-2018 Season Annual Impact Report! This report explores the many ways that the Theatre and its programming impacted our community over the past year. It is meaningful to be able to share it all with you, as none of it would have been possible without your investment in our work. Last season, the IRT made significant strides in our accessibility and inclusion efforts. From our inclusive casting of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime—for which we received considerable national acclaim—to new accessibility programs that make the theatre available to even more of our community members, read on to learn more about how these efforts made the IRT a more welcoming place for audience members, artists, and staff. As we reflect on the season that has passed, we are honored by your trust and investment in our work. Thank you for making our 46th Season possible! Sincerely,

Janet Allen Executive Artistic Director

ABOUT ATTENDANCE The IRT is proud of our strong season ticket package performance in recent seasons. Performing arts ticket package numbers have been declining nationally for many years, and thanks to the IRT’s devoted audience, the Theatre is bucking this trend with increases in this area over the past three seasons! The IRT’s season attendance fluctuates year to year for a variety of reasons. For instance, in the 2015-2016 season we produced To Kill a Mockingbird as a part of our education programming. The show was popular with both student and public audiences, creating a spike in audience numbers for that year.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

BIGGEST CHANGE SINCE DAY ONE?

BIGGEST CHANGE SINCE DAY ONE?

CHARGE SCENIC ARTIST

I am incredibly proud of our team’s work on Pride and Prejudice from the 2004-2005 season!

BIGGEST CHANGE SINCE DAY ONE?

The most amazing change has been the huge leap forward in professionalism in all areas. As the Charge Scenic Artist, I’m thinking of the paint shop in particular. Over the years, the staff has developed to include a manager, two full-time staff, and over hire as needed. As we have worked together over the years, the seasons have continued to run more smoothly and present a fun challenge.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

My first show called for a large number of moving pieces of scenery; all but one of those pieces had to be moved manually by a stagehand pushing and pulling. Now most set pieces can be moved by machines and controlled by our deck manager from a computer console. New equipment means it now takes far less time in the technical rehearsals to set up complex scene changes, and the scenes are consistently replicated for each performance.

HOW DO DONORS SUPPORT YOUR WORK?

The generosity of donors allows us to advance our technology and move scenic pieces in a more efficient, controlled manner.

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Everything has gone up in quality, from our offices to our administrative processes to our customer service. We have an amazing team of people that I get to work with and be inspired by every day.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

First and foremost, I’m most proud of the art we’ve presented on our stages over the last 20 seasons. I’m also incredibly proud that we’ve had balanced budgets for 20 years. This is not always the case in our industry. Theatres similar to us have gone out of business in this timeframe, so balancing a budget consistently is something of which we can be proud.

ARTISTIC IMPACT INNOVATIVE CURIOUS INCIDENT SHINES IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

FINDING HOME CONTINUES TO WOW AUDIENCES

At the start of our 2017-2018 Season, the IRT received an unprecedented level of national attention with a bold, innovative production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Based on the best-selling novel by Mark Haddon, this Tony Award-winning play tells the story of Christopher Boone, an autistic teen that embarks upon a remarkable journey of courage, growth, and inspiration.

Finding Home: Indiana at 200, the IRT’s celebration of the Indiana bicentennial, continues to garner significant artistic acclaim for the theatre long after its 2016 run on our Upperstage.

The IRT was one of the first regional theatres in the country granted rights to produce the play, and ours was the very first production to cast the role of Christopher with an actor who self-identified on the autism spectrum. Actor Mickey Rowe’s remarkable journey to our stage captured the hearts and minds of people across the country. Speaking with CNN, The New York Times, and NPR’s Here & Now, among others, Mickey eloquently expressed how important his casting was toward creating opportunities for performers who are on the spectrum. Mickey’s story also helped raise local awareness of the production and its subject matter, allowing the IRT to work within our community and better serve audiences with differing sensory needs. With the assistance of partners such as the Autism Society of Indiana, Anthem, and Hands on Autism, we were able to craft a theatre-going experience for a wider audience, including preparatory materials for attending the theatre, designated quiet areas, hand-held manipulatives, and full sensory-friendly performances. These efforts will influence IRT programming from this point forward, allowing us to broaden the scope of our accessibility and incorporate standard procedures that serve the needs of a diverse and evolving IRT family. The true impact of these accessibility efforts was touchingly displayed during a post-show discussion, in which a student on the autism spectrum asked Mickey Rowe, with awe, how he was able to be married, have children, and perform in a professional play. This student had never envisioned a future in which such seemingly commonplace relationships and opportunities were available to someone who is autistic. Stories like this reinforce the power of live theatre to open minds, expand horizons, and change lives.

Through the generous support of Lilly Endowment, two performances of this bicentennial celebration were digitally recorded by WFYI. Executive Artistic Director Janet Allen, Resident Dramaturg Richard J. Roberts, and a team of artists from both IRT and WFYI led a collaborative editing process which was ultimately crafted into a two-hour edition suitable for television. Finding Home: Indiana at 200 saw its television broadcast premiere on Statehood Day, December 11, 2017, with numerous subsequent airings appearing in the following months. The broadcast version of Finding Home was received with great enthusiasm, with particular appreciation for how well the piece translated from stage to screen. The quality of this transfer was made clear when the production was nominated for two Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Lower Great Lakes Chapter. The nominations were for achievement in the categories of Arts/Entertainment, Program/ Program Feature/Special, and Audio. At a ceremony held on June 23, 2018, the IRT proudly witnessed the awarding of the Emmy Award for achievement in Audio to Finding Home: Indiana at 200, an honor shared by IRT Resident Sound Designer Todd Reischman, IRT engineer Jason Tuttle and WFYI sound engineer Aakash Ravikrishnan. Work is now underway to create a DVD edition of Finding Home that will contain not only the broadcast content, but all of the material recorded from the two distinct versions of the show. Upon completion in autumn of 2018, these DVDs will be distributed to library systems across Indiana, making this unique slice of our state’s history accessible to Hoosiers for years to come.

JAMES STILL: CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ARTISTIC PARTNERSHIP During the IRT’s 2017-2018 season, we celebrated 20 years of artistic collaboration with our playwrightin-residence, James Still. During his time as playwright-in-residence, the IRT has produced Still’s plays 20 times, including seven world premiere productions. Among this body of work, Still has written or contributed to eight of our 19 Indiana Series plays. It has been a long and fruitful journey for the organization, one that the IRT was honored to celebrate. The year-long celebration included a variety of events created to fête James, and to immerse audiences in his work. In partnership with The Indianapolis Public Library and Indy Reads Books, the IRT presented four play readings of James’ work, including favorites The Widow Lincoln and the expansive A Long Bridge Over Deep Waters. Additionally, the IRT mounted full productions of two James Still plays: Appoggiatura and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder. Donors played a vital role in the celebration by participating in a special giving initiative called the James Still Society. An astounding 430 generous households chose to make a new or increased gift in honor of James and his work. The initiative raised $114,200 in support of the work on IRT stages, including a generous grant from the Lacy Foundation.

THE POWER OF REPRESENTATION ONSTAGE The IRT occupies a unique space in the Indiana theatre community by reserving 40% of our season performance schedule for student matinees. The generosity of donors helps the IRT bring approximately 40,000 students from across Indiana to the Theatre, with many experiencing a professional production for the first time. The Theatre brings their lessons to life, and possibly even more importantly, puts characters onstage with whom students can identify, representing a wide array of backgrounds, ethnicities, and perspectives. Below, hear from educators and students about how their experiences this season at the Theatre transcended entertainment.

DIVERSITY REPRESENTATION, JOSEPH ASAGAI IN A RAISIN IN THE SUN “Students are able to be in a beautiful facility and see professionals at their best. Many of my students have never been to a theatre and leave IRT wanting to come back. They ask specifically about careers in theatre, other plays to see, and some even auditioned for the plays produced at our school. Live theatre at IRT is entertaining and accessible. It is inclusive and culturally diverse. It transcends subjects, culture, time, race, and income. One specific memory I have is when I took my students to see A Raisin in the Sun. You see, I have several Nigerian students who speak Yoruba. As a teacher, to see their reactions when Asagai came on stage and spoke their native language was amazing. They sat up straighter, smiled, leaned in toward

the stage. It was the first time they saw a person who looked like them, sounded like them, and spoke Yoruba on stage. I love moments like that and I get them time and time again at IRT.” - Angela Barnes, Educator, MSD Wayne Township

NEURODIVERSITY INCLUSION, CHRISTOPHER BOONE IN THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME “Thank you for organizing our field trip to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. I love the book, and the play was everything I had hoped for and more! I have autism, and I love how the play accurately expressed how people with autism think. I think it is helping make great strides towards acceptance towards people that are ‘different’.” -High school student from northeast Indiana

FEMALE ACTORS IN TRADITIONALLY MALE ROLES, BENVOLIO IN ROMEO AND JULIET “I just wanted to let you know that the production of Romeo and Juliet is probably the best I’ve ever seen. The modern spin coupled with the superb acting was so impressive. My coworkers and I have seen many Shakespearean productions, and we all agreed this was the best Shakespeare play we’ve watched! Please pass on our compliments to the actors, director, and all staff. Our students equally loved the production (a thank you to Benvolio for being relatable to our girls, Peter for such a unique spin, and Mercutio for making these 15-year-olds constantly laugh). Bravo to all!” -High School English Teacher from Central Indiana

AUDIENCE EXPANSION THROUGH SENSORY FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES In addition to the world-class art presented on the IRT’s stages during the 2017-2018 Season, education staff at the Theatre launched a new initiative to make the theatre-going experience more inclusive by adding Sensory Friendly performances. Staff had been working on this program for some time and premiered it with our production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. What led the IRT to introduce this program? IRT believes theatre and the lessons presented there should be accessible to everyone, and the organization recognized it could do more to help our partner schools better serve their students of all abilities. To this end, one student and one public Sensory Friendly performance were added to the

performance schedule of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. These performances welcomed all patrons including those with autism or sensory sensitivities. Accommodations for these performances included providing a buffer seat to patrons allowing for extra room, manipulatives and sensory toys, the option to enter and exit the theatre as needed, and a standing room area at the back of the theatre for patrons that may need to pace or move during a performance. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, house staff members were seated at the front of the house as visual indicators. These indicators alerted audiences of emotionally intense or technically surprising moments. The list of potentially stressful sections

of the performance was also available on the Theatre’s website, giving patrons time to prepare for the moment. The pilot program welcomed more than 250 patrons to the Sensory Friendly performances. As a result, similar approaches were integrated into all performances for the Exploring Stages production The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse with great success. It is thanks to the support of donors that the theatre experience offered at the IRT continues to evolve to make it more inclusive for all patrons.

COMMUNITY IMPACT The IRT was privileged to work with a number of organizations this season to expand our programming in the community. Here are a few highlights from this past season. • This year, the IRT travel with one of our productions for a special performance at DePauw University. John Strand’s The Originalist offered a thoughtful, open-minded look at conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, one of our nation’s most galvanizing figures, as he spars with a liberal legal intern. The play provided a balanced examination of the ideological gridlock that characterizes America today, and the Theatre was delighted to share the production with DePauw students on campus.

• With the 2017-2018 Season, the IRT introduced Access Pass admission. Access Pass is a program developed and administered through The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. With the Access Pass, families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), SNAP, and Hoosier Works and/or Hoosier Healthwise Insurance are able to access IRT productions for $2 per person, per visit. We are the first live theatre to join the ranks of 11 arts and cultural institutions across Indiana participating in this program.

• The IRT worked with sponsor Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in a partnership opportunity for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The IRT along with Anthem worked with Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization that works with volunteers to establish one-on-one relationships with individuals with a variety of needs. Best Buddies was able to have a presence in the IRT lobby during performances of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time providing audiences inspired by the production with an immediate opportunity for getting involved in ending the isolation of people with different needs.

• The IRT also hosted our Scrooge Gives Back event again, which provides an opportunity for individuals to donate blood, toys, or food items to help kick off the season of giving. The IRT also remains committed to providing pre-show chats and post-show discussions throughout the season and offering one Community Night performance each season, an evening where patrons are invited to pay any amount for their ticket. This season’s Community Night happened during A Raisin in the Sun.
