The Indiana Repertory Theatre produces inclusive, top-quality, professional theatre and community programming to engage, surprise, challenge, and entertain members of the whole community.
The Indiana Repertory Theatre will welcome the whole community, becoming a place of belonging for an ever-expanding audience of all ages and backgrounds seeking meaningful and enjoyable experiences. Using theatre as a springboard for both personal reflection and community discussion, our productions and programs will inspire our neighbors to learn about themselves and others. As the largest non-profit theatre in the state of Indiana, IRT’s goal is to help make Indiana a dynamic home of cultural expression, economic vitality, and a diverse and engaged citizenry.
• Producing diverse plays, we strive to provide insight and celebrate human relationships through the unique vision of the playwright.
• Employing professional artists of the highest quality, we nurture an environment that allows them to grow and thrive on our stages and in our communities.
• We foster a creative environment where arts, education, corporate, civic, and cultural organizations collaborate to benefit our community
• Our community thrives when diverse voices and peoples gather to make, watch, and support theatre.
• It is our responsibility as a community resource to open our doors wide, welcoming all to our high-quality, relevant art.
• We acknowledge our history of privilege as a predominantly White institution as an initial and necessary step toward effectively supporting the dismantling of systems of oppression.
• To be an anti-racist organization we must seek knowledge and understanding to identify discriminatory practices and increase cultural awareness in collaboration with, and learning directly from, BIPOC, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI+), functionally diverse, and other historically excluded communities.
• As a public-benefit organization, we focus on community service, artistic integrity, and creating a range of ticket prices that allow all segments of our community to attend.
• Fiscal responsibility and financial security fuel our institutional sustainability.
• To ensure institutional longevity, we continue to grow our endowment fund as a resource for future development.

Every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams, and energy to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here or removed from here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted. Acknowledgment of the land which the IRT now occupies is critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage.
We want to acknowledge that what we now call Indiana is on the ancestral lands of many indigenous peoples including the Miami, Piankashaw, Wea, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Delaware, and Shawnee. We pay respects to their elders past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of displacement, migration, violence, and settlement that bring us together here today.
This land acknowledgment was created in collaboration with Scott Shoemaker, PhD (Miami Tribe of Oklahoma). Portions of this acknowledgment come from the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture (usdac.us).
The Indiana Repertory Theatre moved to its current site on Washington Street in 1980, renovating and reopening a building that had been shuttered for nearly a decade.
The historic Indiana Theatre was built in 1927, a time when the shameful practice of racial segregation was the standard in movie theatres and public buildings across the United States. The Indiana Theatre building was originally segregated and at some point in its history this practice ceased. Many Indiana residents and their families’ heritage stories recall being treated as less than equal citizens in this building, with some even being barred from entering. We cannot erase this history.
We honor and respect all those who have faced discrimination and harm in this building. We strive every day to make the IRT a place that welcomes all people.
We strive to celebrate and serve the diverse people and cultures that make up our whole community. The IRT is committed to creating and maintaining an antiracist theatre that is inclusive, safe, respectful, and accessible.
Whether you have been coming for years or are here for the first time—welcome to your Theatre!
• Our community thrives when diverse voices and peoples gather to make, watch, and support theatre.
• It is our responsibility as a community resource to open our doors wide, welcoming all to our highquality, relevant art.

• In order to be an antiracist and inclusive organization we must seek knowledge and understanding to identify discriminatory practices and increase cultural awareness in collaboration with, and learning directly from, BIPOC, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI+), functionally diverse, and other historically excluded communities.
• We will represent and engage the diverse people, cultures, and communities of central Indiana.
• We will employ more people of color, with a goal of 40% of all new hires being BIPOC, and foster an inclusive culture of artists, staff, board, and vendors.
• We will continue and deepen our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) training for all board and staff.
• We will be accessible to all audiences inviting those who have been unheard or unseen in the past, including functionally diverse people, BIPOC, LGBTQI+, and under-resourced communities.

As we close out the 2024-2025 season, we are thrilled to welcome you to the final show of the year, The Play That Goes Wrong! This uproarious farce promises to have you laughing from start to finish, as a group of well-meaning but disastrously incompetent actors attempt to stage a murder mystery for the very first time. It’s the perfect way to end our season with slapstick humor, unexpected twists, and plenty of surprises along the way.
As you watch the production, I hope you’ll note the incredible work of the dozens of artists here in Indianapolis who bring our productions to life. Every costume stitch, every prop, every piece of the set is crafted with care and dedication by local artisans, and we are deeply grateful for their contributions to the creative process. It takes a lot of artists to make a play go so wrong!
I am excited to introduce our upcoming season, which will bring a fresh mix of thrilling productions and powerful performances to our stage.
We begin in the fall with Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, a thrilling comedy packed with suspense, clever plot twists, and Hitchcockian charm. Next up is Marie and Rosetta, a soul-stirring play about the early rock 'n' roll legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her unlikely partnership with a young Marie Knight. Our beloved annual tradition of A Christmas Carol will return, offering a heartwarming and magical retelling of the classic Charles Dickens tale. New to the IRT stage we are eager to produce August Wilson’s incredible play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, a powerful drama that explores themes of identity, hope, and community, set in the early 1900s. In the long tradition of bringing the best new plays to Indianapolis, we present English by Sanaz Toossi, a Pulitzer Prize-winning new play that navigates the complexities of language, immigration, and identity, bringing to life the experiences of those learning to communicate in a foreign tongue.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! We are thrilled to announce we will close the season with the regional premiere of the incredible musical Come From Away. This remarkable show tells the true story of the kindness, resilience, and humanity that emerged after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Set in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Come From Away follows the heartwarming and poignant journey of 7,000 stranded air passengers, and the welcoming community that opened their hearts and homes to strangers. It is a powerful story of hope, unity, and the unbreakable spirit of people coming together in times of crisis. This marks a significant milestone for us at IRT as we bring this unforgettable production to the stage for the first time in Indianapolis.
With such a vibrant and eclectic mix of performances, we’re sure there’s something for everyone. From suspenseful thrillers to deeply moving dramas to heartwarming new musicals, this lineup promises to challenge perspectives, spark important conversations, and create lasting memories.
On behalf of the entire IRT team, I hope you will join us next season for a journey of discovery, laughter, exploration, and most importantly, community. Thank you for your continued support of the arts, and I look forward to seeing you at the Theatre!
Warmly,
adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan from the movie by Alfred Hitchcock
Four actors play more than 40 characters in this hilarious takeo on one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best movies. A comic thrill ride full of plot twists, quick-changes, and laughs, delivered at a delightfully dizzying pace.

In 2012 the three writers and performers devised The Play That Goes Wrong. In 2014 the production moved to the Duchess Theatre in the West End, winning Best New Comedy at the 2015 Laurence Olivier Awards. It continues to run there today. A Broadway production ran from 2017
to 2019 and then moved off-Broadway to New World Stages, where it still performs today. The play has also had five tours in the United Kingdom and a national tour in the United States. Mischief Theatre’s other plays include Peter Pan Goes Wrong (2013), The Comedy about a Bank Robbery (2016), Mischief Movie Night (2017), and Groan Ups (2019). Their newest production, The Comedy about Spies, is opening in London in April 2025.

FARCE & SLAPSTICK: A HILARIOUS COMBINATION!
IMPROBABLE SITUATIONS
MISTAKEN IDENTITIES
MISUNDERSTANDINGS
EXHAUSTIVE ACTION
CHARACTER CONFUSION
VISUAL HUMOR PRATFALLS
EXAGERRATED ACTION
COMEDIC VIOLENCE
PRECISE TIMING
Farce places exaggerated characters in improbable situations where they face outrageous obstacles. In the fifth century BCE, Aristophanes entertained the audiences of Ancient Greece with larger-than-life characters, ridiculous situations, and lots of bawdy humor. Aristophanes combined his uproarious comedy with serious social messages: In Lysistrata, the women of Athens and Sparta go on a sex strike until their husbands stop the war. Two centuries later, Roman playwright Plautus became the first great genius of farce, mastering the art of mistaken identity.
The genre got its name from the Old French farce, “to stuff,” when irreverent actors in fifteenth century France stuffed comic improvisations between the scenes of religious dramas. Soon, plays that focused exclusively on such gags were popular throughout Europe. Sixteenth century Italy developed its own particular brand of farce, commedia dell’arte, with its stock characters and situations enlivened by improvised lazzi (what today we call “bits” or “shtick”). The great French playwright Molière got his start in commedia dell’arte, later folding its farcical elements into the more refined strictures of French comedy to create such masterpieces as Tartuffe (IRT 1983) and The Miser (IRT 1992). Shakespeare went all the way back to Plautus’s Menaechmi, with its two pairs of mismatched twins, for the plot of The Comedy of Errors.
Today when we hear the term farce, we usually think of bedroom farce, best exemplified by the work of Georges Feydeau (18621921). Feydeau wrote more than sixty plays, most of them big hits in Paris and around Europe, including 13 Rue de L’Amour (IRT 1978) and Ladies Man (IRT 2009). Feydeau was the king of the bedroom farce, plays that focused on the comic possibilities in attempted love affairs. The settings for Feydeau’s plays often feature a single room with several doors, and much of the fun comes from the characters chasing each other through those doors, often just missing each other.
Meanwhile in London and on Broadway, Charley’s Aunt by Brandon Thomas (IRT 1972 and 1991) was rolling them in the aisles and racking up long runs. The new technology of cinema quickly embraced farce, making stars of the Keystone Kops, Charlie Chaplin, and the Marx Brothers. More recently, films like Some Like It Hot (1959), the Pink Panther series, and A Fish Called Wanda (1988) have become classics, while television has given us I Love Lucy and Fawlty Towers
Farce returned to its French roots in 1960 with Marc Camoletti’s Boeing Boeing (IRT 2017). The 1962 hit musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Larry Gelbart, Bert Shevelove, and Stephen Sondheim returned once again to the
Roman master Plautus, stirring together a cocktail of plot lines from several of his greatest hits with a big splash of vaudevillian slapstick. In the 1980s, two very popular stage farces focused on performers: Noises Off by British playwright Michael Frayn (IRT 1999 and 2018) is set in the theatre, while Lend Me a Tenor by American playwright Ken Ludwig focuses on the world of opera. Continuing in this vein, The Play That Goes Wrong, a 2012 farce by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of London’s Mischief Theatre company, has been going wrong in London for twelve years and in New York City for six. For more than two millennia, farce has kept us laughing by showing us just how ridiculous the human species can be.
Each season, some of our donors choose to celebrate the artistry of the IRT by recognizing our amazing artists, both onstage and behind the scenes. This exclusive giving opportunity is a benefit for Repertory Society members in the Artist, Director, and Playwright Circles.
Thank you to these donors for celebrating our remarkable artists!
