2018-2019 SEASON

WELCOME OUR MISSION Live theatre connects us to meaningful issues in our lives and has the power to shape the human experience. The mission of the Indiana Repertory Theatre is to produce top-quality, professional theatre and related activities, providing experiences that will engage, surprise, challenge, and entertain people throughout their lifetimes, helping us build a vital and vibrant community. OUR VISION The Indiana Repertory Theatre will be a life-long destination of choice for an ever-expanding audience of all ages and backgrounds seeking enjoyable and meaningful experiences. Using theatre as a springboard for both personal reflection and community discussion, our productions and programs will inspire our neighbors to learn about themselves and others. As an arts leader in the state of Indiana, the IRT's goal is to make Indiana a dynamic home of cultural expression, economic vitality, and a diverse, informed, and engaged citizenry. YOUR INVESTMENT Because of your support, the IRT has served approximately five million people since 1972. As we look back on 47 seasons of producing professional theatre and arts education programming, we are grateful to count you as partners in all that we do. Your generosity allows us to continue providing our community with world-class art that enlightens and entertains.

II

DEAR FRIENDS,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s 2018-2019 Season Annual Impact Report. Each year, we look forward to this opportunity to share the impact of IRT’s programming, from the art presented on our stages to the relationships created and nurtured within our community. The work we do has the power to open minds and inform the human experience, and it is brought to life through your support. The 2018-2019 Season contained a rich assortment of artistic offerings, both heart-warming and thought-provoking. Through these productions and related outreach, the IRT made strides in welcoming an ever-more inclusive audience; from expansion of Sensory-Friendly services, to new levels of diversity among casts and design teams, to community conversations on race, mental health, equity, and other issues central to all of our lives. Alongside these programmatic successes, the Theatre celebrated the public launch of its Front and Center Campaign, an $18.5 million endeavor to enhance the artistry, infrastructure, and sustainability of the IRT. Already well on its way to completion, the Front and Center campaign will benefit IRT audiences for years to come. While looking through the achievements of the IRT’s 47th Season, please know that it is your investment in the IRT’s mission that makes this work possible. We thank you for taking this journey with us! Sincerely,

Janet Allen Executive Artistic Director

ARTISTIC IMPACT A LIFELONG DESTINATION

The 2018-2019 Season held true to IRT’s commitment as a lifelong destination—a place where people across generations and backgrounds gather to imagine and explore worlds wildly divergent or surprisingly similar to their own. Wandering the halls, one could hear the cheery melodies of Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” sung from some of our youngest audience members, bringing to life one of their favorite books. Meanwhile, in the Upperstage theatre, audiences reflected on the many things that make life beautiful in Every Brilliant Thing.

PUTTING STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY FRONT and CENTER

IRT audience favorites Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson returned to the IRT stage in dynamic fashion. With support from incoming Front and Center donations, the production team was able to create one of the most complex automated sets IRT has seen. State of the art updates to IRT’s production systems also enhanced the production of Pipeline. The new technology made possible the projections that illustrated the torment and frustration inside the mind of a young African American student. The increased capability allows IRT to enhance the stories on our stages and attract the very best national artists. BY THE NUMBERS

REFLECTING COMMUNITY

IRT strives to be a theatre for all Hoosiers. In that attempt, we continue to consider how to represent, reflect, and celebrate the diversity of the communities we serve. With nearly three times the cast size of a typical IRT show, Kaufman & Hart’s You Can’t Take It With You provided a distinct and important opportunity to reflect our audiences. Our recent production of this Pulitzer-prize winning comedy imagined a more inclusive family than when the play premiered in 1937. Additionally, A Christmas Carol featured a sizeable cast in its 23rd consecutive year, inviting many new company members into our holiday tradition. Attempting to reflect the broad community who attends (over 16,000 young people see this work at Student Matinees), one third of the actors cast identified as actors of color. As we invite new audiences into this holiday tradition, we work to make this story universal, inclusive, and resonant to the widest possible audience. In reaching every corner of Indiana, Playwrightin-Residence, James Still, captured the lives of a Hoosier farm family in his play Amber Waves. Still brought theatre close to home through his work, shedding light on the tribulations many small towns in Indiana face every day. Reflecting the vibrant city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana, IRT produced productions that mirrored and celebrated the audience members, many of whom are underrepresented, who come through our door.

“It was great to see the IRT support voices of color on such a topical issue. The play was honest and the voices felt authentic and real...I enjoyed the use of media in the production.” —IRT Patron

STUDENT MATINEES

COMMITMENT TO FUTURE GENERATIONS With the generosity of our donors, the IRT brought over 35,000 students from across Indiana into the Theatre, many of whom experienced live theatre for the first time. IRT’s education programming brings students’ curricula to life and provides educators another tool to foster discussions about empathy and tolerance. These important life skills are carried with them beyond the walls of the theatre.

SUMMER YOUTH WORKSHOPS

The summer workshops hosted more students than ever before, serving over 90 students ranging in age from 8 to 18 years old. After making adjustments to summer programs to better meet the needs of our students and their families, our programs surpassed numbers previously served at IRT’s summer camps.

“I DEFINITELY PLAN TO CONTINUE WRITING. I HOPE TO CONTINUE WRITING ABOUT OTHER ISSUES IN MY COMMUNITY THAT ARE CLOSE TO ME AND THAT I THINK ARE REALLY IMPORTANT. YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS IN PROCESS HELPED ME GAIN SPECIFIC PLAYWRITING TOOLS. I WILL BE ABLE TO USE THESE SKILLS WHEN I START A NEW PROJECT.”

IRT’s student matinee program remains the anchor of how we continue to serve students across the state. With approximately 40% of our performance schedule reserved for students, IRT prioritizes young audiences and the unique educational opportunity that only live theatre can provide. The Exploring Stages production serves audience members ages 3-8, a population artistically underserved by state funding and in-school arts programming. Our production of Mo Willem’s Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” taught our youngest audiences about friendship and sharing through song and dance and post-show activities with the cast. Our production of The Diary of Anne Frank, presented by Glick Philanthropies, created a space for students to reflect on a significant moment in history as well as their own lives through Anne Frank’s story of hope, perseverance and coming of age.

CREATING WORLDS YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS IN PROCESS New play submissions for our Young Playwrights In Process program tripled from previous years. This annual playwriting competition for grades 6-12 gives students an opportunity to create, express and refine their plays with the guidance of professionals in the field. Students compete across the state to see their work read publicly by professionals at IRT and to receive a $1,000 prize and a full scholarship to IRT’s summer theatre camps.

COMMUNITY IRT is proud to work with a number of community partners to expand the impact and reach of our programming. Here are just a few highlights from the 2018-2019 Season. • IRT is committed to collaborating with community organizations to offer conversations between audiences, artists, and an array of scholars and specialists on some of the most challenging issues facing our society—issues in direct correlation to the themes presented in corresponding IRT productions. In connection with Pipeline, IRT partnered with the Central Indiana Community Foundation to present a series of moderated discussions examining the “pipeline” which leads many young people of color straight from a flawed education system to incarceration. The Diary of Anne Frank, thanks to a partnership with Glick Philanthropies, saw extensive collaboration with the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis focused on discrimination and religious persecution, while work with Community Heath Network for Every Brilliant Thing focused on depression, mental health, and QPR suicide-prevention training. This sort of complementary programming provides direct, immediate feedback from our community, granting crucial insight into how our work impacts our audience, and how it can serve the needs and concerns of that audience. • The 2018-2019 Season saw a dramatic increase in the number of patrons visiting the IRT via Access Pass admission. Developed and administrated by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the Access Pass allows families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), SNAP, and Hoosier Works and/or Hoosier Healthwise Insurance to attend IRT productions for $2 per person, per visit. IRT is the first live theatre among Indiana’s cultural institutions to offer the Access Pass. Since its launch in the previous season, Access Pass usage increased nearly 700%.

• IRT continued its long-standing partnership with United Way of Central Indiana in the Exploring Stages program, designed for children ages 3-8. United Way preschools serve many students whose families live below the poverty line. Exploring Stages provides these children and their teachers tools to learn how to confidently read aloud and important social and emotional learning for the children attending the production. 2019’s Exploring Stages production of Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” was one of the most popular offerings in the program’s history, and United Way preschools were strongly represented among student audiences. All United Way preschoolers also received a book from the beloved series by Mo Willems, upon which the play is based, through another partner program with The Indianapolis Public Library. • The Artist In the Classroom visits for our Exploring Stages program are designed to enhance each student’s experience at the IRT. Central to all visits is the importance of empathy and early literacy, as well as an opportunity for a teaching artist to model creative dramatics exercises to benefit the classroom teacher’s practice. For Elephant & Piggie, these visits focused on important social-emotional learning markers that connected with the performance including: self empowerment, cooperation, ethical responsibility, and helping others. • Exploring Stages also reached out into the community through a series of readings. In collaboration with The Indianapolis Public Library, Indy Reads Books, and Kid’s Ink Children’s Bookstore, the joy of Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in A Play!” was shared in six different library branches and bookstores. IRT teaching artists read from the original Mo Willems books which inspired the play, and engaged children and families in a series of related activities reinforcing themes of friendship, sharing, and imagination.
