2011 Local Content and Service Report To The Community WTIU and PBS KIDS are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of children through curriculum-based media, using new and traditional platforms helping children to learn and develop critical thinking skills, while empowering their imagination and curiosity of the world. This includes the Regional Emmy Award-winning local series The Friday Zone, PBS Kids, PBS Kids Go, and PBS Parents.

Our Ready To Learn outreach program is part of public television’s contribution toward our nation’s most urgent educational goal — ensuring that all children begin school ready to learn. The Ready To Learn Fair distributes free children’s books and introduces children to reading.

The Be More Awards honor the outstanding efforts of our community volunteers. The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network, the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, the IU Credit Union, the United Way of Monroe County and WTIU salute all of the volunteers who give their time and talent so generously to our community.

We also Be More Award provide Nominees Indiana University professional development and graduate Ready To Learn Fair credit for educators through PBS TeacherLine.

2011 Local Content and Service Report To The Community And at a time when funding for music and arts within our schools is being cut, WTIU and PBS are helping to keep the arts alive by ensuring the worlds of music, theater, dance and art remain available to all Americans.

After the success of its documentary about a group of singer-songwriters inspired by local author Scott Russell Sanders, WTIU produced Wilderness Plots in Concert, capturing the definitive performances of their work.

WTIU’s weekly magazine program The Weekly Special produced segments on topics ranging from agriculture to volunteerism, and provided a spotlight for local performers.

Comedy took center stage with the pilot for LMAO! Comedy Showcase, spotlighting local comedians, and a sold-out special event featuring the one-man show of Canadian handyman/ philosopher Red Green.

41% of local viewers support WTIU because of our local productions.

2011 Local Content and Service Report To The Community Every day, WTIU viewers are invited to tune in to explore new worlds. They can explore the treasures of Terre Haute, look to our past for perspective on our future by preserving our architectural heritage, and celebrate the truly creative and economically booming craft beer industry across Indiana.

The Our Town documentary series profiles Indiana towns, showcasing the history, founders, businesses, people, attractions, and characteristics making each town unique. Each program offers an armchair journey through time, showcasing the stories, people, and qualities that make each town special.

On air and online, WTIU documentaries bring to life the incredible characters and epic stories that have shaped Indiana’s past and present.

Over the course of a year, 91% of all U.S. television households — 236 million people — watch PBS. The demographic breakdown of PBS’ full-day audience reflects the overall U.S. population with respect to race/ethnicity, education and income (Nielsen NPower, 9/27/20109/18/2011).

2011 Local Content and Service Report To The Community PBS has been rated by the American public as the most trustworthy institution among nationally-known organizations for eight consecutive years.

49% of WTIU viewers reported watching WTIU NewsBreaks.

WTIU News focuses on communities not covered by commercial broadcasters in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Evansville or Terre Haute. That includes producing debates for local, state and national political offices, as well as providing four free over-the-air digital multicast signals, including a channel completely in Spanish. Weather warnings and school closings are provided on-air and online. For some viewers, WTIU is their only station.

We partner with organizations like Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana University School of Education to provide a forum for discourse, a voice for the underserved, and a platform for analysis and understanding.

2011 Local Content and Service Report To The Community The WTIU Community Advisory Board assists WTIU in fulfilling its mission to inform, inspire, educate and entertain its audiences. Community Advisory Board members represent various constituencies among the counties that WTIU serves, monitoring and evaluating programs, giving voice to underserved populations, serving as a sounding board for ideas presented by WTIU staff, and bringing issues of community concern to the attention of station management.
