Simple and natural ways to lower blood pressure High blood pressure is a big problem. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. In Canada in 2014, slightly less than 18 percent of Canadians ages 12 and older reported being diagnosed with high blood pressure. While such figures might be frightening, Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that there are some simple and natural ways for people to lower their high blood pressure.

· Opt for heart-healthy foods. Instead of foods that are high in sodium, eat a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Check labels before buying prepared foods at the grocery store, as many such foods are high in sodium. · Look for foods that contain probiotics. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that studies have linked foods that contain probiotics to healthy blood pressure. Probiotics are consumable live bacteria, and while studies regarding the relationship between probiotics and blood pressure are ongoing, research-

ers believe probiotics may produce chemicals that, when absorbed in the blood stream, may activate receptors in the blood vessels to lower blood pressure. · Lose weight. People with high blood pressure who are carrying a few extra pounds should know that research indicates extra weight can cause injury to the heart. Dropping those pounds, especially through physical activity that can boost heart health, can help men and women lower their blood pressure.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Some potential health benefits of paddleboarding Paddleboarding, which involves participants standing on a paddleboard or surfboard and using their arms to paddle through the ocean, is an increasingly popular recreational activity. Often seen as a relaxing way to spend a peaceful day on the water, paddleboarding might provide some hidden health benefits. The following are just a few potential health benefits of paddleboarding. • Stress reduction: According to the American Psychological Association, in 2015 a greater percentage of adults reported feeling extreme levels of stress than in 2014. Many paddleboarding enthusiasts acknowledge the soothing qualities of paddleboarding, and a 2016 study published in the academic journal Health & Place found that increased views of blue space, including oceans, can be linked to lower levels of psychological distress. • Exercise: While it might not be high-intensity exercise, paddleboarding is exercise and can provide an avenue for otherwise sedentary men,

women and children to begin increasing their levels of physical activity. Muscles in legs get a workout when paddleboarding, as these muscles are tasked with holding the body steady. In the meantime, core abdominal muscles also get a workout as they work to maintain the body’s balance. And of course, muscles in the arms, back and shoulders are needed for paddling. While paddleboarding may not qualify as vigorous a cardiovascular or strength-training exercise, it does provide a low-impact way for participants to engage muscles throughout their bodies. • Balance: Paddleboarding can be a relaxing activity, but those paddleboarders who are most relaxed are the ones with great balance. Fortunately, paddleboarding can help men, women and children improve their balance because it requires a stable core and strong legs. While novice paddleboarders might struggle to stay upright at first, in time they’re likely to notice their balance is improving. • Vitamin D: Human skin produces vitamin D in response to sunlight, which paddle boarders get plenty of. Vitamin D serves a host of functions in the body that can promote short- and long-term health. Vitamin D facilitates normal immune system function, which can help paddleboarders fight off disease and infection. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a host ailments, including diabetes, as inadequate amounts of vitamin D can cause insulin resistance. In addition, in 2014, researchers at the University of Georgia, the University of Pittsburgh and the Queensland University of Technology in Australia uncovered a link between vitamin D deficiency, seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, and a lack of sunlight. A type of depression related to changes in season, SAD affects millions of people across the globe. Paddleboarding enthusiasts may not know, but this increasingly beloved activity may be greatly benefitting their overall health.

How families can get up and go Families often look for fun things to do together, and few things are more fun than physical activity. Choosing activities that combine fun with physical activity is a great way to bond as a family and get healthy at the same time. According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to fight the problem of childhood obesity, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Parents know it can sometimes be hard to get kids to disconnect from their devices long enough to get out and play. But Let’s Move! notes that kids who are supported by their families or surrounded by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves. Families looking to get fit and grow closer can consider the following approaches to live healthier, more active lifestyles.

• Give gifts that encourage activity. Both youngsters and adults are enamored with the latest gadgets, but tablets and video game consoles won’t do much to make families more physically active. In lieu of toys that promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity. Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together. • Restrict TV time. Establish house rules regarding how many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night. Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity.

• Walk or ride bikes to run errands. When running errands in town, take the kids along and walks or ride bicycles rather than drive. This is a great time for families to catch up, and walking or riding a bicycle is great exercise for adults and kids alike. • Schedule physical activities for the weekends. When planning weekends, parents can schedule a physical activity for the whole family. Make time to go hiking at a nearby park or schedule a family basketball game in the driveway. Such activities are healthy, and they don’t have to cost a lot money, either. • Volunteer as a family. Another way

to get up and go as a family is to work with a local nonprofit or charitable organization. Sign the family up for monthly park or beach cleanup projects that get the family out of the house and moving. Or sign the family up to work at a local soup kitchen where kids can learn the value of helping others while staying on their feet. • Let kids plan activities. One great way to get kids excited about an active lifestyle is to let them plan family activities. Kids who are encouraged to come up with activities, whether it’s visiting the zoo or going kayaking as a family, are more likely to embrace those activities.

Maintaining or adopting a healthy lifestyle involves a host of factors. Getting off the couch to be more active is one such factor, as is taking control of your diet so it’s helping you and not hurting you. While adopting a more active lifestyle is a relatively simple step for many people, modifying a diet is oftentimes a much steeper hill to climb. Dietary habits can be hard to break. But altering your selections so the food you consume is helping you instead of hurting you is possible, and you won’t have to abandon your favorite foods, either. The following are a few tips aimed at helping you make your diet work for you. * Choose the right foods. Many people feel the culprit behind their unhealthy weight is the portions they consume. While portion size might have something to do with it, the foods you’re eating are likely the primary suspect. If your diet is devoid of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and the dairy products you choose are not fat-free or low-fat, then this could be why you have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Choose low-fat or fat-free, formerly known as “skim,” milk and dairy products instead of whole milk for your morning cereal or when preparing recipes that call for cheese. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains each day. Choose lean meat when buying red meat, but don’t overdo it even if you are buying lean meat. Red meat once per week might be enough to satisfy your craving, so enjoy poultry and fish for dinner on other nights of the week. continued on page 15

* Alter your recipes. Many of the foods you enjoy may not be unhealthy. But how you prepare those foods could be compromising their nutritional value or unnecessarily adding calories and causing weight gain. For example, fried foods are typically loaded with salt and contain more calories than foods that are baked or grilled. Foods that are fried are typically fried in oil, and that oil undergoes changes to its molecular structure during the frying process. The molecules become harmful free radicals that can damage the body’s cells while negatively affecting your cholesterol levels and your body weight. Instead of frying foods like fish or chicken, grill or bake them instead. It’s alright to occasionally indulge in some fried chicken or other popular fried foods, but keep such indulgences to a minimum. Another way to alter your recipes is to replace potentially All proceeds harmful ingredients with lower-calorie alternatives. When benefit the squad! preparing a meal that calls for butter, choose a more heart-healthy alternative such as a low-calorie butter spread. an active role in maintenence and damage prevention. One of the key things to remember is to never allow any substance to remain on the paint for too long; otherwise the risk for damage increases. Also, it may be very difficult to clean if the offender is allowed to sit on the paint. Here are some other factors to consider. * UV light: Just as UV light can affect skin, hair and other parts of the body, it also can affect the paint on a car. UV rays oxidize the paint and cause a white, powdery film to form on the car. Washing the car frequently enough and applying the best quality wax will help keep UV rays from penetrating through the paint. * Over sprays: Life does not stop to allow cars to drive through, particularly when it comes to construction zones. It’s possible for a car to be doused in paint spray, tar, concrete, and other chemicals that are routinely used in construction. Do not allow these substances to harden on the car. Rinse promptly with automotive soap. Try to avoid construction zones whenever possible. * Rain: Both acid rain and regular rainwater (and other sources of water) can dissolve paint over time. The U.S. Geological Survey has said that water is a universal solvent because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid. Whenever the car becomes wet, it should be dried with a towel or chamois and not allowed to air dry. * Natural substances: Tree sap, bird droppings and splattered insects contain compounds that can erode the paint on a car. Avoid parking under large trees where sap and bird droppings may be prevalent. In terms of bug splatter, try to wash it off as soon as possible to alleviate damage. * Eggs: Oftentimes, rambunctious children think it is

funny to egg a car. However, the enzymes and sulfur content in eggs can cause paint and clear coat to dissolve, leaving white spots in the wake of the egg. Because egg can be sticky and very hard to remove once dried, it is helpful to wash it off as soon as possible. It takes only a few hours for the damage to be permanent. * Bleach: Although a bleach-and-water solution is often heralded for its ability to clean many things, it should not be used on a car. Bleach is an oxidizer and it will pit metal and discolor paint. Be careful with pool chemicals as well, as chlorinator is usually regular household bleach. There are many things that can damage a car paint job. Although it’s impossible to shield the car from everything, there are precautions that can be taken.

Most people purchase a car for its looks and performance. However, unless the auto is kept in a garage and never driven, it is impossible to keep it in pristine condition. Highway hypnosos can be dangerous Road trips are a popular getaway once the weather warms up. People take to the roads in droves, whether for vacations or simply to enjoy the scenery along the way. With more people on the highways, there could be a heightened risk of accidents for a number of reasons. Though road rage, driving while intoxicated and other road dangers are well documented, many people do not know about something called highway hypnosis -- which could be responsible for erratic driving on roadways. Think about a time when you were behind the wheel of a car on a long stretch of road, such as an interstate. Perhaps you lost track of the exits you passed or wondered how you ended up in a particular location when you don’t remember getting there. Maybe you actually fell asleep or drifted off of the road. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, the main cause of roadway departure crashes is driver drowsiness and inattention. Driver fatigue is often caused by highway hypnosis. Highway hypnosis, also known as “white line fever,” occurs when someone has been driving a vehicle along a long stretch of roadway for an extended period of time. The monotony of a long drive can induce sleepiness or forgetfulness. It can lull the brain into a sort of trance, and the body is essentially operating on auto pilot while the mind is off somewhere else.

Highway hypnosis is most common during the latenight hours when the time of day also plays a role in drowsiness. The concept of highway hypnosis is nothing new. In fact, engineers who created the Indiana Toll Road in 1957 designed curves every two miles on average to allow for a variation in the road conditions. Many other roadways are built with rumble strips or other variations in the scenery to reduce the monotony of the road. Highway hypnosis occurs more than people would like to believe. However, there are ways to help prevent highway hypnosis. * Take frequent rests on a long trip to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. * Try not to drive during the hours that you are normally sleeping. * Bring a road trip partner along and make conversation. * Don’t eat a big meal before beginning a long car ride. * Open the windows and get circulation going. * Keep your eyes moving between your mirrors and the road to improve conscious thought. * If you are still unable to fend of feelings of drowsiness or some of the other symptoms of hypnosis, pull over and take a long rest until you feel more capable to drive.

Play outside in Susan Kim | Recreation News

The trails and rivers of West Virginia’s Hardy County are inviting you to come, unplug and play outside. Whether it’s fishing, birdwatching, hiking, biking, horseback riding or just finding a quiet spot for a picnic, the small towns will welcome you with a non-commercialized, down-home feeling. The locals will tell you it’s the “Hardy effect.” Located in the eastern Appalachian Mountains, Hardy County is less than a three-hour drive from Washington, D.C. Four rivers run through the county: the South Branch of the Potomac, the South Fork, Lost River and Cacapon River.

Into the woods

The 3,712-acre Lost River State Park and the George Washington National Forest hold miles of hiking trails. The Trout Pond Recreation Area, one of the most scenic in the Mid-Atlantic, is located

Hardy County, W.Va.

in a valley with Rockcliff Lake, a manmade beach, campground and many interconnecting hiking trails. The Hawk Recreation Area offers easy access to West Virginia’s segment of the Tuscarora Trail, a split-off of the Appalachian Trail. The easiest hikes include the Rock Cliff Lake Trail at Trout Pond Recreation Area and Cranny Crow in Lost River State Park, where you’ll be rewarded with views of the park from 3,200 feet. (lostriversp. com) Insider tip: If you’re looking for great family recreational activities, Lost River State Park offers an outdoor swimming pool, tennis and volleyball courts, an archery range, badminton, and horseshoes.

On the water

You can feel the “Hardy effect” on the water, too.

With its many lakes, creeks and streams, Hardy County is full of good fishing spots, particularly for trout. Kimsey Run Lake has plenty of trout, bass and panfish. Trout-stocking season is March through May. A rock levee extends more than 400 feet into the lake, providing an excellent location for bank anglers. Warden Lake, a reservoir on Moores Run near Wardensville in northern Hardy County, is also a popular fishing spot. The lake is a warm-water fishery for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish and northern pike. Trout are also stocked once in February and biweekly March through May. Local outfitters rent canoes and kayaks, and offer a variety of guided trips for paddlers. Lost River Outfitters hosts fishing — including fly continued on page 21

If a calm evening on the water is more your speed, try the sunset paddle. (lostriverecotours. impress.ly) Eagles Nest Outfitters offers 12 scenic river trips with more than 80 miles of river to choose from, whether you are kayaking, canoeing, rafting or fishing. Eagles Nest also offers camping at its base with bathroom facilities, campfire and patio use. Most outfitters also rent tubes for floating, and most everyone in Hardy County can guide you to a good

swimming hole. The Trough General Store and Canoe Rentals is located at the mouth of a 6-mile stretch of the South Branch of the Potomac River, north of Moorefield. You can rent a canoe, or pick up snacks, drinks, bait and ice. You can park at the store and canoe back to your vehicle, or reserve a shuttle from owners Jerry and Sabrina Dean.

Back on land

Visit the Hidden Trails Stables for guided familyfriendly horseback trail rides. Located in the Lost River State Park, the stables offer rides that range from a half-hour to a two-hours through the shaded trails in the park. Hardy County has some monster hills, and drivers

here are used to sharing the road with cyclists. Lost River Barn — also known as Raw Talent Ranch — on Branch Mountain has hosted worldclass competitive athletes and professional cyclists, including members of Tour de France teams, former Olympians, and national champions. The Lost River Grill is known for its classic comfort foods, including meatloaf, hand-cut steaks, seafood and cream pies. The Lost River Bed & Breakfast is a renovated 1920s, four-bedroom farm house. Museums, historic sites, art galleries, na tio nal parks, beaches, bike trails, amusement parks, zoos, farms — our beautiful region is filled with places offering a whole host of fun activities, whether the weather cooperates or not. Need some inspiration? How about a day at a park or beach? A bike ride, an outing on the water or walk in the woods? A trip downtown for some window shopping or to admire the historic buildings? Or to discover some microbreweries and local-foods eateries? Perhaps an evening at the movies or some summer theatre? And that’s not all. You could do the round of festivals that liven up the area over the summer months. You could rent a cottage or go camping, organize

a family picnic in the great Complete schedule on web outdoors or a www.octrr.org happy hour on a patio with friends. You could take a road trip to explore local wineries, art galleries and an tique stores. You might treat yourself to a relaxing day at a spa or a golf course. And the list goes on. Why look elsewhere when you can find eve rything nearby? Especially considering that you can save on transportation and, in many cases, accommodation costs by playing the tourist close to home. Better yet, you’re investing in your community; local tourism stimulates the eco nomy by creating jobs and attracting investors and it contributes to the success of small neighbourhood businesses. Not only will you be helping the region prosper but you’ll discover plenty of new summer pleasures. Have a great vacation!

DEBNAR’S

Why not stay close to home to have the fun of being a tourist this year. After all, you must like the area you live in if you chose to live here in the first place. And summer is the perfect time to discover it all over again.

Keep kids engaged over school breaks

Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Some, like Australia, feature four terms with two-week breaks in between each term. Others go to school for most of the year - with various holiday breaks in between - and then get the bulk of their time off during the summer. As much time as kids spend in school, there will be times when they are left to their own devices, and during these times it’s easy for them to forgot classroom lessons. Sometimes called “summer learning loss” or “summer slide,” this forgetfulness sees many students fail to retain all of their lessons over prolonged breaks from school. Studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer

compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer. Anywhere from between one to three month’s worth of educational achievement can dissipate during prolonged breaks from the classroom. To help ensure that those hard-earned lessons are not so easily forgotten, parents can help children remain intellectually engaged in various ways over school breaks. · Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins. · Encourage reading. Set aside time for reading each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills. Children may enjoy picking their own books rather than having a required reading list. · Keep a math book handy. On long car trips or rainy days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum. Math workbooks may be available at bookstores, or parents can look online or ask a teacher for a summer to-do packet. · Plan educational trips. Vacations and day trips can be fun, entertaining and educational all at the same time. Science centers, museums and living history locations can bring to life information learned in the classroom, even on family vacations. · Learn at camp. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school breaks. Look for camps that do not simply babysit children, but engage them through enrichment activities. · Take a class. Children and families can learn together by exploring new skills. Enroll in something educational and enjoyable, such as a music or dance class, a STEM seminar or something else that engages the mind and body. This gives everyone a chance to learn something new and have a great time together as a family. Parents and educators can reduce lesson loss over school breaks by encouraging families to remain intellectually engaged in any way they can.

Replacing a roof is a costly venture few homeowners look forward to. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2010-11 “Cost vs. Value” report, the national average cost of a roof replacement is nearly $22,000, a costly endeavor considering the tenuous nature of the economy. What’s more, homeowners who choose more upscale roofing materials can expect to spend almost $40,000 on their roofs. Such costs make it no small wonder that many homeowners fear the dreaded diagnosis that their home needs a new roof. While there’s little homeowners can do to reduce the cost of a roof replacement, there are warning signs homeowners can look for that might indicate a roof replacement is on the horizon. Recognition of these signs can help homeowners be more financially prepared should the day come when the roof needs to be replaced. 1. The presence of algae If the roof has lots of dark streaks and stains clinging to it, that is likely algae, which can grow on the roof for quite awhile. Algae does not necessarily do any

damage to a roof, but it does do some damage to a home’s physical appearance, as algae on the roof is not very pleasing to the eye. Algae is most often found on the roofs of homes located in climates that have warm, humid summers. If algae is a problem on your roof, spray washing with a mixture of water and bleach can effectively remove it. 2. Buckling shingles Like algae, buckling shingles are another unsightly problem on a roof. But buckling shingles are more than just an eyesore, they actually might indicate significant problems. When shingles buckle, that’s typically because hot air from the attic is forcing the shingles away from the home. Buckling shingles also indicate that the roof is poorly ventilated, which can take years off the roof’s life expectancy while driving up home cooling costs along the way. 3. Granule loss Granule loss is typically a byproduct of normal shingle wear and tear that results from inclement weather, such as hail. Older roofs might experience granule loss, but granule loss can also occur on a new roof if a defective roofing product was used. Any granule loss, even if slight, should be addressed, as the side effects of granule loss include a weakened roof and leaking. If granule loss is not addressed, the consequences could be severe the next time a storm occurs. 4. Mold Unlike the warning signs already discussed, mold is not visible on the outside of the home. Instead, homeowners should look in the attic of a home to see if there is any mold growth. If there is, the roof is likely leaking, and the health risks of mold growth in a home are substantial. Mold is not necessarily easy to detect, so a professional inspection might be in order if mold growth is suspected. If a professional determines mold is, in fact, present, then the mold will need to be removed and all options, including a roof replacement, must be considered to keep mold from coming back. 5. Roof rot Perhaps the most discouraging sign a homeowner can see on his or her roof is roof rot. Roof rot appears when a roof is in considerable decay and, if not addressed, its consequences can stretch far beyond the roof, damaging other parts of the home thanks in large part to water getting through the roof. If roof rot is either not noticed or just ignored, it won’t take long for water to get through the roof and blaze a destructive path through the rest of the home.

Just how deep you’ll dig depends on your climate’s specific frost line, but it’s safe to assume you’ll get a workout in when digging. * The deck can have multiple levels. Though many people associate decks with one level, it’s possible to have a multi-level deck if you simply don’t have enough room to build a deck that will be big enough to meet all of your needs. A multi-level deck can break up those long flights of stairs while ensuring you will always have somewhere to go to escape the sun on a hot day. * You will want to protect the deck. Decks are a costly investment, and you will want to protect that investment. If you’re building a wood deck, keep in mind the sun will beat down on the deck for most of the year. You can protect the deck by painting it. Paint provides sunscreen for the deck, stopping the sun from breaking down the material. Once you’ve finished painting, apply sealant, whether it’s oil- or water-based. * Don’t forget fasteners. Fasteners will hide the screws for aesthetic appeal. But not all woods and fasteners are the right fit, as certain woods are only compatible with certain fasteners. Find out which fasteners make the right fit ahead of time. Because fasteners conceal the screws, they also make it possible to go barefoot on the deck. A deck makes a great addition to many homes, but homeowners should learn Tri County as much as possible Chimney Service CHIMNEY & FIREPLACE SPECIALISTS about decks and what Serving 6 Counties goes into building them For 32 Years Fully Insured • FREE Inspection before making any decking 800-809-5996 decisions. www.TriCountyChimney.net PA019645

Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau Housing Survey indicate that homeowners annually spend billions of dollars improving outdoor living areas. One of the most popular ways to do just that is to add a deck to a home. Decks are beneficial in many ways. Grillmasters love decks because they make the perfect place to set up a grill and a table and cook for family and friends. Those who simply love being outdoors find decks the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun or idle away the evening hours. But homeowners who want to build a deck should know a few things before that process begins. * Permits are necessary. Unless the deck is going to be especially small, you will likely need a permit to build it. Before buying any materials or consulting any contractors, make certain you know which permits you need and how to get them. If the proper permits are not secured before the project begins, you might have to tear down the whole project and start all over again. * Decks don’t have to go on the back of the house. If the back of your house sits in the blazing sun all day, then it’s probably best to build the deck elsewhere, and that’s perfectly alright. So long as the property and permits allow, decks can be built on the side of a home as well, and putting a deck on the side might be more comfortable. * Decks don’t have to be made of wood. It’s easy to assume all decks are made of plain wood. However, decks can be made out of a wide variety of materials, natural or synthetic. Pressure treated wood is perhaps the most popular material for decking because it’s not very expensive. But manmade materials that are a mixture of recycled plastic and wood bits or sawdust are also popular because they require no maintenance. But homeowners should know that manmade materials can get hot in the sun, which will require those enjoying the deck to wear shoes. * Expect to do some digging. If you’re going to build your own deck, expect to do some serious digging. Local building codes will dictate how deep you will need to dig for the pier footings, which support the deck’s weight.

When does toe walking become problematic in children? Learning to walk is a major milestone in a young child’s life. Parents eagerly await this milestone, but then may quickly fret when toddlers become so fast on their feet that they become difficult to catch. As children learn to walk, they may demonstrate a type of walking known was “toe walking.” This is walking on the toes or the ball of the foot rather than having the heel and bottom of the foot touch the ground. Although toe walking can be an entirely natural way to develop normal walking patterns, sometimes it can be a sign of autism or other neurological conditions. Naturally, parents may grow concerned if they see their toddlers repeatedly walking around on their toes. The Mayo Clinic reassures that walking on the toes or the balls of the feet is fairly common for initial walkers. Many children outgrow toe walking after age 3. However, some children continue to walk on their toes beyond toddlerhood. WebMD says that more than half of young children who toe walk will stop by age 5. Even these children may be completely healthy and developing normally. Toe walking may be a behavioral habit and nothing to be concerned about. According to a study of 1,400 children in Sweden, nearly 5 percent of all young children had toe walked at some time. Former toe walkers did so for one to two years before walking normally. Children still walking on their toes after age 5 only did so about 25 percent of the time. According to the Children’s National Medical Center,

many children who toe walk do not have developmental or neuropsychiatric problems, especially when toe walking is an isolated abnormality. However, those who exhibit other developmental delays or symptoms of neurological immaturity may require further testing. Toe walking is sometimes a symptom of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or autism. According to the Autism Research Institute, toe walking may be a result of a dysfunctional vestibular system, which is quite common in autism. The vestibular system provides the brain with feedback regarding body motion and position. Children with autism may not be receiving the right body motion and positioning signals and begin compensating through toe walking. With cerebral palsy, toe walking can be caused by abnormal development in the parts of the brain responsible for controlling muscle function. Toe walking with muscular dystrophy can occur when muscle fibers weaken over time. Various therapies can help offset toe walking. These include physical therapy, visual-motor training, bracing/ splinting, and serial casting. The Mayo Clinic says that if conservative treatments are ineffective, surgery to lengthen muscles or tendons in the back of the leg may be recommended. In many cases, toe walking as a singular symptom is no reason for parents to be concerned. Children often grow out of it as they become more confident in their newfound walking skills.
