Get out of the cold at the 2017 Summer Youth Fair When the weather is frightful, planning for summer is delightful! Get out of the cold and visit the nearly 50 youth program providers at our annual Summer Youth Fair, Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mount Nittany Middle School in State College.

Sponsored by State College Area School District Community Education, the Summer Youth Fair is the largest gathering of summer camp providers in our area.

You’ll find camps to suit all ages, needs, and interests, from art camps to sport camps, day camps to sleep away camps and everything in between.

Past years have seen close to 400 families enjoying what the fair has to offer.

With its one-stop-shop convenience, parents

are able to gather informational brochures, talk to camp representatives, and start mapping out an exciting summer adventure for their children.

Some vendors will take on-site registrations, while others share information about programs and how to register.

Ike the Spike will visit at noon and concessions will be available throughout the day benefitting the Downtown/State College Rotary.

ESL Summer Camp develops confidence

By EMILY KAO Setting foot into an English as a second language (ESL) classroom within the State College Area School District (SCASD) will bring you into an environment quite different from a traditional classroom setting.

Rather than rows of quiet learners seated at their desks, eyes fixed on their teacher, you will instead be greeted with voices of students from all around the world, eager to be heard.

The English language learners (ELLs) are part of a community that encourages and supports one another as they navigate their way through a new language and culture. Providing students with a hands-on, meaningful and safe space to develop their English language proficiency lies at the heart of the SCASD ESL program.

Our district is fortunate to have the resources available to offer our students a continuation of these goals through the SCASD Community Education ESL Summer Camp. This six-week program begins in June and runs through July. It provides students in grades K-11, who are enrolled in the district’s ESL program, with an opportunity to continue to improve their English language proficiency during the summer months. An energetic team of teachers is trained to collaborate and lead the students in this camp.

“One of the most beneficial pieces of the camp is the connection it generates between the ELL families and our community,” shares Sara Caracappa, former ESL Summer Camp instructor. This senti-

ment can be illustrated by the weekly field trips students take to learn more about the resources available to them in our area.

This may include outings to explore the art of the People’s Choice Festival, to learn about teamwork with the State College Spike’s Baseball team, or even to experience how the American culture celebrates its Independence Day with a 4th of July picnic.

Not only is it rewarding to see the students’ eyes light up over the novelty of such experiences, it is also the discussion that originates from these endeavors that make it worthwhile. Students excitedly retreat back to the classroom to share their personal connections to these experiences, and all the while learning more about their peers as they listen to one another.

In addition to facilitating the practice of speaking and listening skills with discussion, the instructors from this camp draw on the field trips to create learning content for the students.

Planning and implementing lessons in which students can read, write, and express their thoughts surrounding the adventures are a few ways to make their language learning even more engaging and meaningful.

Following the summer months, I look forward to the stories students share from their time at ESL Summer Camp. Additionally, I am grateful for the new friendships they have gained.

Champs Camp: SCASD’s elementary summer reading and math program

By TONYA BLACK Every summer, the State College Area School District offers a reading and math camp. Champs Camp runs for six weeks and is offered to students rising to grades one through six.

Students participate in activities designed not only to maintain their current academic skills, but also to enrich and extend their learning to higher levels.

The program is offered for students within the State College Area School District who receive reading or math support services.

The Champs Camp teachers work hard to make the summer program fun for students by providing quality planned instruction in the areas of reading, math, and writing and by developing exciting themed activities such as Carnival Day. One of the highlights of last year’s program was our partnership with Anita Ditz, the head of chil-

Even if your child isn’t eligible for a program such as Champs Camp, reading, writing, and doing a bit of math together can help make the return to school in the fall a bit easier.

It can also help to avoid what some call the “summer slide” when aspects of reading, math, and writing skills are forgotten.

Many parents ask what they can do to help their children maintain academic skills during the summer months.

Knowing that time of year is filled with activities such as sports and travel, along with some beneficial unscheduled downtime, here are a few suggestions of activities that will help your children preserve their reading, writing, and math skills during the summer months:

1) Read! Read! Read!

One of the best things that you can do is to read with your children on a consistent basis and to also have them read on their own.

Perhaps it works best for your schedule to take a few moments to read in the morning after breakfast or to read for a few minutes together at night before going to bed.

Whatever you choose, reading will help your child through exposure to vocabulary and social stories.

You can foster comprehension development by asking questions such as: Who is the main character in the story? What was your favorite part of tonight’s story? Why do you think the character made that choice? When does this story take place?

2) Make writing natural by finding everyday opportunities.

For example, if your child has fun spending a weekend with friends or relatives, have him or her write a quick thank you note expressing gratitude.

Encourage your child to keep a summer journal or scrapbook. Send postcards when you travel.

Program prepares new drivers for challenging situations

By DAGMAR WILSON Proficient driving is truly something the entire community can embrace as a worthwhile life skill.

State College Area School District offers in-car drivers education to high school students who have completed the in-class, for-credit portion of drivers education.

The curriculum includes six one-hour lessons and each covers varied driving routes that enable students to apply the driving strategies they have learned in the classroom.

The comprehensive nature of the program includes one-on-one instruction, fundamental and practical skills, review of traffic laws, and defensive driving strategies.

A few examples of lessons include parking, merging, assessing visibility, responding to adverse conditions, and preparing and reacting to unexpected driving events.

The final lesson includes a review and the administration of the driving test for high school students.

Most insurance companies offer discounts to students who have completed the classroom and incar components, a testament to the effectiveness of this program.

Community Education also accommodates adults including visiting internationals and Penn State Uni-

versity students, who often find public transit insufficient.

While Community Education cannot test adults, the course will prepare them for the road test by offering the same comprehensive program offered to the high school students. Learning to drive is an empowering act of independence for many adults, and this offering embodies the Community Education mission.

Our region has a combination of high density pedestrian and commuter traffic. From commercial shopping areas with a myriad of traffic patterns, to idyllic rural roads that we share with slow moving farm equipment, driving in our town requires vigilant, constant awareness and split second decisionmaking.

The entire Centre Region can be by-passed on any of the three intersecting freeways. Traffic conditions in Centre County are unique, and seasonal events draw many visitors to the area. PSU, nestled in the center, draws tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Student move-in and departure weekends, graduation, and of course, football games, are just a few of the annual events that create challenging driving conditions.

Students blast off with Black Rocket

By PATTY MCKENNA Like it or not, technology is all around us. It has firmly cemented its place in our schools and classrooms; it was only a matter of time before it spilled over into the plethora of extended learning opportunities our children have.

Black Rocket, the fastest growing creative sciences enrichment provider, saw this as in-road and launched its project-based company over 10 years ago.

Since then, its philosophy of “Safe. Fun. Learn.” has led to more than 100,000 students in more than 100 international locations participating in a dynamic lineup of STEM-related, game-based courses. Centered around some of kids’ favorite things — think Minecraft and Star Wars — these courses immerse students in new and cutting edge technology.

In 2015, State College Area School District Community Education partnered with Black Rocket to offer these courses at Shorts & Sports summer camp.

Weekly Themed Summer Art Camps From June 19 Through August 25 Morning Sessions: Ages 5-8 Afternoon Sessions: Ages 7-12 Also options for Preschoolers & Teens

Students entering grades 4 to 6 are given the opportunity to create their own video games, digital films, apps, and Minecraft mods. The classes took off and have been extremely popular.

Students who returned in 2016 arrived excited to learn new things and expand their skills. Working in teams of two, students collaborate, brainstorm, and compromise with their team to create fun projects.

Minecraft mania is celebrated in the Black Rocket classes. Students can design their own Minecraft mods and import them into their Minecraft game.

They can design their own worlds, maps, objects, and textures.

Students can animate a short film using techniques such as keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating 3D models — the same techniques used by Pixar and Disney!

This summer, look for three weeks of Minecraft programming including Minecraft Animators, Minecraft Designers, and Minecraft Modders. The fun doesn’t stop when camp is over! Students upload their games to the Black Rocket website and can play from home, as well as play other students’ games.

Debuting at Shorts & Sports this summer is Virtual Reality: The Future is Now. Students will embark on an epic adventure in virtual reality by creating their own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences.

At the end of the week, participants will even take home a virtual reality headset of their own creation, so they can enjoy their creations long after the school bell rings in the fall.

Adding Black Rocket to our Shorts & Sports offerings has been an adventure, one we look forward to continuing. The best part of Black Rocket courses is no experience is necessary to join in on the fun.

Using peer learning, 21st century skills, technology and creativity, students have a blast with these classes!

As they excitedly recount the events of camp, it is easy to note the confidence the learners have developed in their journey to developing English proficiency. The students’ positivity paired with the growth in language development sets a positive tone for the start of a new school year.

State High holds the distinguished honor of being the first high school in the nation to offer an incar driving curriculum, founded by Amos E. Neyhart in 1934. His foresight is indicative of the excellent and visionary nature of State High curricula development.

Capable and perceptive driving remains relevant for all students, it is a practical life activity in which almost everyone engages.

Operating a vehicle becomes intuitive; yet explaining specific driving techniques, from the perspective of a new driver, is not. SCASD Community Education is proud to continue the in-car drivers education program, created by current and former teachers.

Community Education’s safety and drivers education teachers are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Department of Motor Vehicles and participate in annual professional development.

The power of summer camp

Summer camps are magical places. While each camp varies in location, content, and mission, they all have one thing in common: They provide valuable experiences and fond memories for children.

Camps come in all shapes and sizes. Overnight camps, day camps, sport camps, theater camps … the list is endless.

Choosing the best camp for your children is a personal decision, but the reasons to send them are fairly universal.

The benefits are many, but here are a few of my favorites: ■ We all look forward to the lazy days of summer, to sleeping in and escaping the vigorous school year schedule.

However, many children crave routine. Camps provide that, albeit in a much more laid-back way, while still offering an array of fun summer activities.

Some families need summer camp for their young children when school is not in session.

But even families who have a more flexible summer schedule find that summer camp provides a needed “reset” throughout the summer.

■ As our children become more and more connected to technology, they are becoming increasingly less connected to each other.

Some summer camps are tech-free, while others have guidelines for limited technology use throughout the day.

This means kids have more opportunities for socializing, building friendships, and gaining important interpersonal skills.

Summer camps are typically made of mixed age groups, which foster rich interactions and mutually valuable relationships between older and younger children.

■ Summer programs and other extended learning opportunities provide children an opportunity to find success outside the classroom.

Some students struggle to find their place in the traditional classroom setting; they find the day-today academic expectations out of their reach.

At camp, however, children can take safe risks, building nonacademic competencies and skills that can contribute to future academic success.

Campers participate in hands-on experiences from which they learn critical thinking, creativity, leadership, and a host of other skill sets necessary for our 21st century learners and future work force.

■ Last, but definitely not the least important benefit of summer camps, they are FUN! They give kids a chance to relax and catch their breath. They are a break from the ordinary, chock-full of adventure.

The friendships children make at camp can last a lifetime, the counselors and teachers make a lasting impression, and the activities allow children to explore new and exciting interests.

There are so many things competing for our children’s time — friends, sports, technology — but camp is a gift you can give your child, one that they will benefit from and remember forever.

We are so fortunate to live in a community that values youth programming.

However you spend your summer, rest assured that enrolling in a summer camp is a good investment in your child’s future.
