The tradition continues This is the 25th year for the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts. We’re well-known as the family-friendly arts festival where entertainment is free, every day is children’s day, and the quality art is also affordable. From homemade brooms to BBQ roast beef, glittering jewelry to the lively music, everything at our festival is Made in PA, U.S.A. — and admission is free. Our host and neighbors charge a modest parking fee. Held on acres of flat, grassy grounds at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in historic Boalsburg, the four-day People’s Choice Festival site is on Route 322, just three miles east of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts held simultaneously at State College and Penn State. Nearly 200 artists, 26 food booths, and 14 specialty food vendors and more than 40 entertaining groups make this festival an all-day attraction. Plus specialty food and wines created in PA, huge shady dining tents, and wide-open spaces for the kids to play make this a popular event for everyone, even the family dog. The kids will enjoy crafts, science games, petting zoo, bounce house, face painting and more.

Those attending the People’s Choice Festival for the first time witness a field of tents as they approach from the parking lots.

Plan your day around the music you love, the artists that strike your fancy, and the glorious festival food that makes every lunch, snack, and supper a mouth-watering experiment. Hmm, a crab cake sandwich with fresh-squeezed lemonade, ribs and iced tea, hot sausage sandwich and a milkshake? Dixieland or rock, barbershop or big band, Elvis or the belly dancers? Maybe you’ll need to share more than one day with us.

Histy of e festival It’s been 25 years since a handful of volunteers got together to create a homegrown arts festival. In 1993, there were 50 vendors, a couple food stands and a few live bands. Now it’s one of the largest and most family-friendly arts festivals in central Pennsylvania — attracting more than 110,000 visitors over a four-day period. This year the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts features nearly 200 artists, more than two dozen food vendors and 40 acts on the two stages. It began with George Marion, a local artist, who wanted to start a brand-new arts festival, the People’s Choice Festival of the Arts. George and his compatriots wanted a venue to share their creations at the same time as the State College festival. George and his wife, Nancy, energetic local artisans, were up to the challenge of organizing the first event. George placed an ad in the paper and there was a write-up as well. John Madison, who was new to the area in 1993, had been helping his wife,

Georgia, sewing her handmade welder’s hats. “We were just getting into the hat-making business”, John said, “and I saw the article in the paper. We went to George and Nancy’s house and took our hats with us.” The Madisons were accepted into the first show. Cindy and John are now the co-directors of the People’s Choice Festival, both with the fest from the very beginning. They took over a few years ago when George and Nancy retired and moved south. With all the work they do to present each festival, neither one exhibits at the show anymore. Their artistic labor of love has become the show itself. “I think there were about 60 artists that first year,” John said. “They were all along the military museum entrance road, with about four food vendors over by the monuments. We had one little stage. It was a hay wagon. Someone made us a yellow, red, and blue canvas backdrop and a little roof. That was it, a hay wagon.” The festival now has two huge entertainment tents that seat hundreds.

John and Chris Kepler, entertainment director, remember one particular year quite vividly. “One that stands out was I believe in 1995 when the storm blew the entertainment tent down at night and the fireman took the gear to the fire hall for safekeeping. We got things up and running in time to open the next morning,” Chris said. Diana Stapleford, broadcast executive of Magnum Broadcasting, has been with the festival for 19 years as marketing and sponsorship director. She’s responsible for publicity and raising funds for the festival. People’s Choice runs on donations and sponsorships. “The more donations and sponsors we get, the more we can improve the show year after year. We appreciate this support more than you know,” Diana said. The People’s Choice grounds are so spacious, no matter how large the crowd, visitors feel free and unfettered. Some festival goers bring babies in strollers and their pets (on leashes, of course). One of the things that makes People’s Choice a little different from most arts festivals — all the artists, entertainers, and food vendors are from Pennsylvania. The selection of arts and food are also chosen to suit the budgets of growing families. “At first, this was a ‘silly little arts festival’ that nobody thought would come to much of anything,” John said. “Thanks to George and Nancy, it’s become ‘the local show’ in my opinion. Many local folks come every year, every day. The people have really supported the People’s Choice Festival, and we appreciate it.”

Thanks to the Marions for their energy, enthusiasm, and perseverance. Sadly, Nancy passed away and George now lives in Florida. They’d be proud of their legacy, and, 24 shows later, how the ‘second generation’ of volunteers is taking it to the next level, while preserving the original goals — exclusively Pennsylvania vendors and entertainers, affordable crafts and a wholesome family experience.

Artisans from a variety of mediums line the grounds as customers and — www.peopleschoicefestival.com browsers take the weekend to visit their favorite booths. 6 — People’s Choice Festival 2017 — Centre County Gazette

Pionrs of e festival By STEVE BIDDLE It’s hard to believe that the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts has been around for a quarter of a century, but this year the festival celebrates its 25th birthday. The festival was the brainchild of George Marion, a local artist who felt that the “downtown” festival – the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts – had gotten a bit too exclusive. He felt that too many artisans came from outside Pennsylvania, at the expense of local artists. So he decided to do something about it. There was plenty of skepticism when Marion scheduled the first one to take place on the same weekend as the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. After all, that had been an annual event in Downtown State College since 1967. But it turned out to be a stroke of genius, because now people from all over the country descend on Happy Valley to attend both festivals. There are only a few artisans who have been with the festival since its inception. One of them is Penny French, who creates hand-made teddy bears. Penny was among the early skeptics. “That was a big concern,” she says, “not only the question of success or not, but would we be blackballed from the downtown festival if we participated. And, as it turned out, I was already scheduled to do downtown that year, but only for the Artist in Action part on Sunday. I received a letter not long after I signed on with People’s that my presence would not be required on Sunday after all, so I knew that it was do or die time in State College for us.” Gene and Sally Kelley are another couple of pioneers. Gene creates scroll saw fretworks, and Sally paints some of his work. Sally says, “We didn’t know what to expect! Turns out, we nearly sold out and had another craft show scheduled just two weeks later!” Penny, Gene and Sally are quick to show their enthusiasm for the People’s Choice Festival and its atmosphere. “I love the unique set-up, the circle layout. It’s user-friendly for both the crafters and the public,” Penny says. Gene and Sally love the ease of set-up and tear-down, and the ability to have their trailer at the booth. “Oh, and then there’s the open-air venue where there’s always a breeze and the attendance that it continues to draw year after year.” As with any big event, the Festival has evolved, while still keeping its original atmosphere. There have been changes in the managing committee. Founders George and Nancy Marion retired from the Festival several years ago. And the original artisans have seen it blossom and grow. “It’s been like watching one of your kids grow up,” Penny French says, “A stumble once in awhile, but overall I’m proud of what it has evolved into. It is a good alternative to downtown and it has proven to be an asset for the collectors. State College has always been very supportive to the artists and craftsmen.” That sentiment was echoed by Sally Kelley.

“As with all things, growth and change are inevitable,” she says, “Some good, some not so good. We adapt well to change, and we support the leadership and the show in general.” Looking back over the years, Sally says, “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have been among the 52 original craftsmen/ artisans at that first show 25 years ago. We’ve made new acquaintances, enjoyed the company of old friends, observed throngs of people and pets strolling the field, and survived all kinds of summertime weather!” And there has been a variety of extreme weather conditions. One year, several booths blew down during a major summer storm. And what would these Festival pioneers like to see in the future? Penny French did not hesitate. She says, “I would like to see it go on for many years after all of the original 52 are long gone. It feels really good to have been at the birthing of such a good thing.” When asked what changes, if any, would she like to see, Sally responded, “We can’t think of a thing.” And they have a message for patrons. Penny says, “I would like to tell all of those that have never attended PCF that they don’t know what they’re missing. This is not just another craft show. It is unique and friendly, with great music, great food and a happy atmosphere you don’t find at other shows. So, come on down!” Sally expressed gratitude to the Marions for the original invitation to participate in the first festival, the current management team, and “...most of all, to the patrons who come back year after year, bringing friends and family, making the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts THE place to be.”

Remembering Sandie By STEVE BIDDLE The 2017 People’s Choice Festival is taking place without someone who has had a constant and welcome presence at every Festival since the beginning. Sandie Corbin Biddle wrote a great deal of the advertising material for the Festival, participated in the planning, served on the committee, and wrote the special sections about the Festival for the Centre Daily Times. Her sweet personality, her quick wit, and her sharp-as-atack creativity gave the Festival not only advertising and promotional support, but a wonderful embodiment of the spirit of the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts. But this year, she’s not here. In November, Sandie finally lost her long fight with cancer, and passed away at the age of 62. Sandie was a real Pennsylvania girl. She was born and raised in Huntingdon County, graduating in 1972 from Juniata Valley High School. She attended Penn State, and within a couple years, became the copywriter and production director at WRSC/WQWK in State College. And that’s when her talents really bloomed. She knew how to write a great radio commercial — and produce it — almost instinctively. Within a few years, she had moved to Orlando, where she became the Creative Director at WKIS Radio. There, she won the first of many advertising awards. She was a finalist in the national CLIO Awards, the most prestigious of them all. It was for a radio commercial she had created for a local transmission shop, in the “Use of Sound” category. She subsequently took home many ADDY Awards for her work in print and broadcasting. Sandie was probably best known in Orlando, as the voice of “Mrs. Roger Holler.” There was (and still is) a car dealer there, Roger Holler Chevrolet, and Sandie came up with a concept where she played the part of Mr. Holler’s long-suffering wife: “You’ll never guess what Roger is up to now,” she’d say. “But there are pre-owned cars all over our front yard…” And that was when I first became aware of her. I was working at WDIZ radio in Orlando at the time, and I kept hearing these radio spots starring “Mrs. Roger Holler.” Being a copywriter myself, I had a lot of admiration for the creativity involved.

One Sunday, as I was reading the Orlando Sentinel’s Q & A column, I saw a question sent in by a reader. “Is that woman on those radio commercials really Mrs. Holler?” she asked. The answer was, “No, she’s Sandie Corbin, the production director at WKIS. She’s 26, and a Pennsylvanian by Sandie Corbin Biddle birth….” There February 26, 1954 to was a little head November 16, 2016 shot of her, and I thought, “Hey, she’s pretty cute. I’d sort of like to meet her.” Within a few months, that opportunity took place at the grand opening of a local commercial production studio. By that time, Sandie had become the Creative Director at Chapman & Castello Advertising, one of Central Florida’s largest ad agencies. To make a long story at least somewhat shorter, we hit it off, and were married a year later. Beginning in 1981, we would visit Sandie’s parents about once a year at their home in rural Huntingdon County, near Petersburg. I fell in love with the area, Sandie sort of re-discovered her home, and we moved to Pennsylvania in 1988. Almost immediately, Sandie was hired as the Promotions Manager at the Centre Daily Times — where she soon won several promotions awards. We were divorced in 2006, after more than 26 years, but remained close friends. Sandie stayed at the house near Petersburg, where she had lived most of her life. It was in late 2014 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. In typical Sandie style, she fought it in her own way. When chemotherapy made her ill, she decided that she would find other methods — essential oils, diet, and meditation, for example. If they didn’t work, she said, at least she would live the way she wanted to live, right up until the end. The end came on the evening of November 16, 2016, when she passed peacefully at home. All of us who knew her miss her terribly, but there is at least some comfort in knowing that Sandie is now at peace. And the People’s Choice Festival extends its gratitude — and remembrance — to Sandie Corbin Biddle.

Bible Truck inging histic exhibit to People’s Choice Festival BOALSBURG — The Bible Truck will make its way to the People’s Choice Festival in 2017 and bring with it historical displays of Biblical importance.

Display items include objects that have been used to hide and smuggle Bibles in communist nations, such as an automobile gas tank and a propane fuel tank with false bottoms.

More than 150 objects are on display in the 53-foot trailer.

“Our goal is to teach about the Bible, encourage believers in their faith, offer an evangelistic encounter, praise God, and build unity within the churches where we bring the exhibit,” Dovbush explained.

Sponsored by Egan, Minnesota-based Bible Mission Slavic, the Bible Truck is on a tour throughout the U.S., though demand may allow it to expand its presence for an additional three years. Russia native Pavel Dovbush, one of two BMS representatives traveling with the exhibit, said the tour appears mostly in Baptist churches of all denominations but is open to invitations from other evangelical groups.

“This is an excellent way to bring the Bible and its story to life. It’s very educational on how believers have sacrificed to get the Bible into persecuted countries at the risk of their own lives.” For more information visit bibletruck.com.

Bible Mission Slavic, a Russian-focused ministry in the U.S., is part of the worldwide Bible Mission ministry with headquarters in Germany but with offices in nine other nations, added traveling representative Tim Gorelov from Kazakhstan. The free exhibit has already toured eight states with more than 7,000 persons having toured the exhibit. A tour is necessary because of the explanation of the many objects on display, Gorelov explained. The tractor-trailer is divided into two parts. The first deals with the early history of the Bible including its origination, duplication through early manuscripts and the printing press, and modern technology. The second deals with its survival and attempts to suppress its distribution in communist countries. The oldest object is an 1845 Bible and the newest is a bulletpierced Bible that saved the life of a soldier in the current war between Ukraine and Russia. The bullet passed through the Bible but stopped on the last page, saving the Ukranian soldier’s life.

Mt e committ Cindy Rockey

Festival Co-Director Serving on the committee since 1995 A local life long residence of Pennsylvania, Cindy was raised and married in Pine Grove Mills. Then, with husband Don, settled in Boalsburg. She has been involved in sewing and crafting from her early teens in the 60’s. Through raising her family and a career, she continued to sew, knit and craft and now, in retirement is a full time crafter and co-director of the Peoples Choice Festival of Arts. The first arts & craft show at the Military Museum she organized as a fund raiser for the museum. It was small but well attended and existed for a few years. Later she helped with the Nittany Valley Holiday Festival at Penn’s Cave. Then she became director and moved that show to the Peasant Gap Fire Hall. When Cindy was 20 years old she met her lifelong friend and business partner, Sue Spalvins. Together they travelled the state participating in craft shows, eventually, joining the Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and then the People’s Choice Festival in 1994. Within a few years she joined the festival committee organizing the volunteers and young artisans. Our festival would not exist without the volunteers from our community who provide extra services for festival patrons. In 2006, Cindy accepted co-directorship with John Madison. At this time her husband joined the ranks to help with the facilities. Together they have helped to grow the show to 190 artisans, 23 food vendors, 15 specialty food vendors, 7 wineries and 40 entertainers. Our festival would not exist without the volunteers from our community. Cindy and Don have two children, three grandchildren.

John Madison

Festival Co-Director Serving on the committee since 1994 John, his wife Georgia and two children moved to State College in 1988. John worked at S&A Homes and his wife worked out of their home doing seamstress work. They started MADison’s HAT’R Inc. in early 1991, making custom made hats of all varieties, (reversible hats!) and got started into the Craft show business. They eventually opened a retail store on Pugh Street, in downtown State College “ MADISON’S HAT’R” which they closed in 2015. John and Georgia work their wholesale business, comprised of their own line of college products, mostly hats and some clothing from their home. John and Georgia got involved with the People’s Choice Festival in the beginning by applying to the first show. This was also their very first craft show ! They went to the Marion’s house to show him a sample of Georgia’s hat making and sewing and were accepted in to the festival. George and Nancy Marion, the founders of the festival in 1993 were determined to make this work and needed help and that is when George ask John to come on board to help him out, and that is how it all started and now it’s 25 year!! How time flys! About 2006 George and Nancy retired from the festival and John and Cindy Rockey began directing and organizing the festival. “It has grown quite a bit since then” I remember the very first year, there were about 60 artists , 3 food vendors and an old hay wagon for an entertainment stage. Now we have 190 artists 23 food vendors, 7 local wineries, 15 specialty food vendors, and all types of entertainment for the younger ones like Youth Art Sales, Pony Rides, Petting Zoo, Face Painting, Bounce Houses, the Science Museum and wide open spaces to enjoy it all.”

Rick Snyder

Food Concession Director Serving on the committee since 1995 Rick was born and raised in Bellefonte by his mother, Emogene, and father, Blair, with his brothers, Jerry and Randy, and sister, Lori. In 1965, Rick’s parents opened a pizza shop, Benner Pike Pizza; that was their start in the food service industry. When Snow Shoe fire company asked them to bring pizza to their carnival, it was the start of Snyder’s Concessions. Rick got his first stand in 1977 selling lemonade. When Rick wasn’t working concessions he was a machinist by trade. He now farms and raises beef cows. Rick and his wife Lacie now have multiple concession trailers selling french fries, lemonade, and cinnamon buns. With his years of experience he was asked to be the concession food coordinator at the Nittany Antique Machinery Show, and has since taken on that job at many shows including the People’s Choice Arts Festival. Along with Rick Snyder’s Concessions, his family is still in the business. Emogene, Randy, Jerry, and Lori have their own trailers selling various food item.

Don Rockey

Facilities Director Serving on the committee since 2000 Don was raised on a dairy farm in Boalsburg and worked at the Penn State University Airport. In 2006 he took over the responsibility of mechanical, grounds maintenance and fabrication, handling the day to day trouble-shooting needed to keep the festival running smoothly for the week. His experience in mechanical, electrical, general maintenance and facilities operations quickly became a necessary and permanent position at the festival for the week. When any of the vendors has a problem at their site, it is likely that Don will be there to solve the issue and keep the show operating. Don lives with his wife on 7 acres in Pine Grove Mills. He keeps busy managing the Boalsburg car wash, helping neighbors and improving their mountain home.

Rick and Lacie have four children, most of which followed in their footsteps with their spouses. Their sons, Addison and Preston, and their daughter, Kendra, have their own concession trailers. Everyone is separate with their own business, but the Snyders take pride in it being a family business.

Chris Kepler

Entertainment Director Serving on the committee since 1995 Chris Kepler has lived in PA and this general area all his life. He enjoys the outdoors, fresh air, bicycling, and most of all riding either “mountain or road” bikes with his wife Susan. He has been a musician (bass guitar player) since JR High School and played with different bands through the years. Although not playing with any bands at the present time (less drama he says, LOL) he plays his bass every day. Chris graduated in 1977 from State College Area High School and the Centre County Vo-Tech learning mechanical skills through the heavy equipment “mechanics” course (graduating at the top of his class). Late in his Senior year of high school he started a part time job at a local auto dealership in the detail dept.

Upon graduating in June started work in the shop and worked in the automotive business for the next 15 years. In late 1992, he thought it was time for a career change. Realizing the growing need for quality sound and light systems he founded Entertainment Sound Service Jan 1st 1993. A few years after the business began the phone book listing was changed to “Chris Kepler Audio Services”. Most people around the area knew “Chris Kepler” rather than “Entertainment Sound Service” (which still remains the legal business name) making it easier for people to find him when looking for help with their audio needs. In 1995, he started providing the sound systems at People’s Choice Festival, now 23 years for him. After the original Entertainment Director of 13 years “John Kepler” (who was no relation) passed suddenly, Steve Biddle took over for 2 years before moving on. In 2008 Chris Kepler took over as Entertainment Director, still continuing to provide sound systems for both stages. He has been taking great steps to have a “green” business. First, with the riding of bicycles to do as much business as possible logging thousands of miles. His newest step is using a solar power generator to power his sound & light systems at outdoor shows. Both these steps have saved many gallons of fuel and pollution helping save our environment for generations to come. Chris Kepler continues to be involved with providing sound systems, lighting, staging, and solar power for many different events, festivals, etc. around the area. He also provides in house sound & light systems to local clubs along with doing freelance audio engineering and consulting. Contact and info at www.chriskepleraudio.com.

The 2016 People’s Choice Festival was the first year Chris Kepler Audio Services used his Solar Power Generator to power the sound system at the NORTH STAGE. It was a great addition to a sustainable event with no noise or pollution to distract from the quality of sound. This is unlike the degradation to the sound caused along with distracting noise and smell from a fossil fuel generator. Kepler will again be using the Solar Power Generator at the 2017 Festival at the NORTH STAGE to power the sound system for the 4-day event. It created quite a stir with festival goers amazed at this cutting edge “GREEN” technology offered exclusively by “Chris Kepler Audio Services.” Be sure to stop out and see it in action, a very impressive piece of equipment for sure.

She currently serves on the committee supporting the group efforts of the committee and numerous administrative duties throughout the year to help orchestrate the annual show.

Diana has worked in various media outlets, including Newspapers, Network and Cable TV, Advertising Agencies and Radio. She has been involved in marketing and radio in the State College area since 1993.

Her favorite times of the show are check- in day, with the arrival of the artisans, and the four days to follow with the show. She especially enjoys meeting new people and sharing in the enjoyment that the festival brings to the families and community. Diane cherishes her family time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and two pet buddies, and works full time at Penn State. Her favorite pastimes are enjoying the outdoors, biking, hiking and traveling. Thank you to all the committee members for memorable years of hard work and to the community for sharing in the festivities.

Diana Stapleford

Diana is involved in many community events and gives a tremendous amount of time serving on committees and organizing special events. She’s been involved in the People’s Choice Festival, almost since its inception, and worked with founders George and Nancy Marion on Festival advertising beginning in 1994. Her creativity and advertising expertise led to a position on the Festival committee, where she became the Marketing and Sponsorship Director. Diana resides in State College with her husband, Michael Stapleford, President of Magnum Broadcasting. Diana has two daughters, a son-in-law and two step-children; Lindsay Lord, Stephanie Lord-Wetherington, Max Wetherington, Sarah and Matthew Stapleford, as well as her adorable dog Cali. The Festival takes an enormous amount of work and planning, and for Diana, it’s a labor of love. “I’m so proud to be part of such a great family event,” she says, “We’ve seen so much growth over the past 25 years, and seeing our visitors have such a good time every year makes all of this more than worthwhile.”
