Paying for College

Butler University’s Jordan Hall, the historic centerpiece of campus

It isn’t easy. But both students and parents have various tools at their disposal to help make higher education easier on the wallet.

hen kids are little, it’s easy to deny the reality of college expenses. Maybe parents set some money aside when Junior was born and put away less and less as Junior demanded more and more. Maybe they pinned their hopes on a mysterious benefactor with a loaded checkbook. The years flew by, the parents blinked, and college bills are just around the corner. College administrators know that most families don’t have a tuition angel. But financial aid is available, whether it’s in the form of scholarships and grants that pay a portion of the tuition bill, or loans that students and parents can pay back over time. Consider the investment, says John Beacon, senior vice president for enrollment management, marketing, and communications at Indiana State University. A college education can open the doors to a successful financial future. “A college degree makes it more likely that you’re going to get a job,” Beacon says. “The earnings over a lifetime are going to far

exceed what you’re going to have to pay back in student loans.” Ready for a financial-aid primer? Check out the suggestions below from Beacon and Melissa Smurdon, Butler University’s director of financial aid.

fill out the FAFSA. FAFSA is an acronym for the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The online application asks questions about family size, income, savings, and other variables to determine the student’s financial-aid eligibility for federal, state, and school funds. In order to receive those funds, families must fill out the FAFSA. Even families who don’t expect to qualify for financial aid would be wise to have an updated FAFSA on file, Beacon says. “You can’t predict the future,” he says. “A breadwinner’s illness or loss of employment can change the picture dramatically. If the FAFSA is on file, that saves some time. Otherwise it’s a slower process.” Today’s FAFSA is a bit different from the one parents struggled with a generation ago. The online FAFSA streamlines the

forget the deadlines. Most states have

FAFSA filing deadlines, Smurdon says. Indiana’s deadline is March 10 for the following academic year. But certain colleges and universities may have earlier deadlines. Though the FAFSA requires the current year’s tax-return information, families can estimate their income when they complete the FAFSA and adjust it after they file their taxes. “There’s now a tool where you can go back to the FAFSA after you file with the IRS and pull the information into your FAFSA application,” Smurdon says.

Helping Hands Students and parents who need assistance navigating the FAFSA, the all-important form that’s required for receiving financial aid, can find it at College Goal Sunday. Slated to take place in February 2016, the event—which is free—pairs families with financial-aid representatives from colleges and universities, who will walk you through filling out the online FAFSA correctly. About 10 sites around Indianapolis will host College Goal Sunday. For the specific date, a list of venues, and which documents to bring, visit collegegoalsunday.org.

look at the numbers. The FAFSA will assign something called the Expected Family Contribution, which is what the family will be expected to pay out of pocket for college. It’s easy to assume this number translates into the dollar amount you have to pay for school. That’s not necessarily true, Smurdon says. The EFC is an eligibility index that schools use in relation to their cost and whatever aid is available. Sometime in the spring, schools will present a financial-aid package to fill the gap between the family contribution and the total cost of attendance. Such packages typically include three categories: Grants or scholarships, which do not have to be paid back. Subsidized or unsubsidized loans. These are low-interest loans for students. Subsidized loans are offered to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays interest on the loan while the student is in school at least part time. Unsubsidized loans do not require demonstrated financial need, but the student is responsible for paying the interest or adding it to the total loan amount after leaving school. Work-study programs, which allow eligible students to earn money during the school year. These part-time jobs can be on or off campus.

don’t

The school’s financial-aid package is just one avenue to pursue. Many scholarships are available through private organizations, local community foundations, large corporations, and other sources. employer has scholarships for employees’ children. There may even be aid for so-called “under-enrolled” majors, where schools entice potential students with scholarships. Websites like fastweb.com will try to match students with potential scholarships for free. Other sites offer to do the job for a fee. Smurdon advises against this. “We have found that the services offering to match people with scholarships for a cost have not been successful,” she says.

let the numbers fool you. Tuition rates vary between schools. But many families may discover that schools have different levels of aid, which will affect the final cost. Private institutions may have different financial-aid sources not available at their publicschool counterparts. “Financial aid is not just based on the family’s ability to contribute; it’s also based on the cost of the institution,” Smurdon says.

don’t

do

consider other means of paying for college. Students have choices, Beacon says.

These include going to a school with a lower price tag, going to the local university and living at home, or spending the first couple of years at a community college before transferring to a four-year school. Beacon encourages families to consider the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program, which pays for college in exchange for military service after graduation. Many students, even those who are not eligible for a school’s work-study program, will pick up a part-time job during the school year and over the summer to help pay educational and personal expenses. Working during college is a family decision, Smurdon says, but it may be a wise one. “For us, work on campus has often shown to increase the student’s engagement with the institution,” she says.

don’t

assume financial-aid awards apply to all four years of college.

Financial aid and scholarships may change from year to year, based on family income, the number of college students in a family, and other variables. Some scholarships are renewable each year, and some depend on a certain GPA or course load for renewal. Read the details, Beacon says. A scholarship may be offered on what he calls a “4-3-2-1” scale. That $10,000 scholarship may be doled out as $4,000 the first year, $3,000 the next year, $2,000 during junior year, and $1,000 during the senior year. “They can reduce it every year as the student becomes more loan eligible and is more likely to stay at the school for the duration,” Beacon says.

Do Your Homework Nothing beats an in-person visit for learning more about a school. But when it comes to educating yourself on how to pay for those four—or more—years, there are many online resources that are worth your time. Here are some helpful places to start. Studentaid.ed.gov, the website of the office of Federal Student Aid, breaks down the types of assistance available—loans, grants, and scholarships—and how they work. It also includes a guide to loan repayment and a tool that looks at the type of loan, its balance, and its interest rate to estimate monthly payments after graduation. The Paying for College section of consumerfinance.gov explains the differences between federal and private loans, lets you compare costs for up to three schools, and offers advice on repaying student loans. On finaid.org, you can enter an institution’s one-year cost (find estimates on the school’s website) to see how expenses will increase over the course of four years. This site also features an Expected Family Contribution calculator, which takes tax-return info and other details to arrive at your EFC. Be warned: It’s fairly involved, but there’s also a Quick EFC calculator that doesn’t require you to plug in as much info. Finaid.org also has a loanrepayment estimator and a scholarship search. Type in any school, and the Net Price Calculator Center on collegecost.ed.gov takes you directly to that service on the institution’s website. The site’s College Affordability and Transparency Center lists those schools with the highest and lowest tuition and highest and lowest net prices (a school’s cost of attendance minus scholarships and grants). Fastweb.com and bigfuture.collegeboard.org are multifaceted sites with several handy tools. Those include profiles on all types of schools nationwide, information on financial aid, scholarship searches, career-planning tips, cost calculators, and advice for choosing a major.

school activities or volunteer work, can only be beneficial. Focus on keeping up the GPA. Many schools offer merit aid that awards grants to students with high GPAs and standardized-test scores. Hard work now can make a difference during a student’s college years. “Taking a challenging curriculum and having a breadth of experiences like volunteer service, extracurricular activities, and opportunities for leadership are things schools are looking for these days,” Smurdon says. cholarship opportunities, class size, location, rankings, student life, graduate employment rates. As you narrow down your list of college options, the list of factors only seems to grow longer and more complicated. Picking your shortlist may have been easy, but choosing one from that list can be a daunting task. Here are some things to consider when choosing between better and best. Ask yourself what’s most important to you. When deciding whether one college’s student life outweighs another college’s scholarships, Craig Coe, assistant director of admissions at Indiana Wesleyan University, says that it really depends on the student’s preferences. “Something that may be important to Student A is not at all important to Student B,” he says. Some people will say cost is the most important factor, while others may say internship opportunities, but only you know what will make your college experience most enjoyable. While trying to figure out what considerations are most imperative, don’t forget that admissions counselors and academic and career advisors are there for you. It’s their job to help you sort through information to make a difficult decision, so never feel bad about peppering them with questions. They can also help you set up meetings with current students or professors, a strategy that Greg Rathnow, assistant director of undergraduate admissions at IUPUI, strongly suggests. Ask them what they think about the school and programs in which you’re interested. Students and professors have the most insight and will be completely honest with you. You might be surprised by how willing current students are to help. Not long ago, they were in the same boat as you, and now they have firsthand experience to share. But be careful not to depend too heavily on any one factor. Rathnow points to rankings as an example. “I don’t think those carry as much weight as students or parents give them,” he says. “As long as it’s a nationally accredited institution, the college experience is really going to be what the student puts into it.” At the end of the day, both Coe and Rathnow admit that choosing your college depends on a kind of intangible gut feeling. And that’s okay. Along with receiving an education, you also have to live, make friends, and develop professional connections. All of that will be easier when you are comfortable and happy. “Many majors and programs can be similar between multiple schools, but the student has to know this is where they want to spend the next four years of their life and where they’re going to be developed personally and professionally,” Coe says. Rathnow went to a small, rural liberal-arts school and now works at IUPUI. He thinks spending time on each campus will help you decide which one feels right. “I’ve seen the benefits of a small liberal-arts school. I’ve seen the benefits of a large state institution,” he says. “I wouldn’t change my undergrad experience for the world, but I also recog-

nize that there are things happening here at IUPUI that wouldn’t happen on the small, private side of things. And vice versa. There’s a school out there for everyone.”

15 Questions Important things to think about as you narrow down your college choices: What are my main reasons for attending college? What type of work do I want to do after graduation, and will this school help me accomplish that? How much can I comfortably afford to spend? What financial aid is available at the schools I’m considering? Is a work-study program offered? Would I prefer a small, medium, or large campus? In what type of environment am I most comfortable: urban, suburban, or a traditional college town? Do I want small class sizes with one-on-one attention, or would I prefer large classes where I’m likely to blend in? How important are student activities to me? Do these schools offer the types of activities that interest me? Is my potential major offered? If I change majors, are my second or third choices available? What student support services does the school offer? Does this school accept Advanced Placement credits or dual-credit courses I completed while in high school? Am I comfortable with the school’s distance from home? Sources: collegeboard.org, scholarships.com, fastweb.com

ho wants to spend an entire day at a college fair listening to people talk about school rankings and student loans? Besides, every place has a website now, and you can get all the information you need from those, right? Well, not exactly. Luann Brames, director of fresh-

They offer a big advantage by bringing together so many options in one place. “It saves you a lot of time because you’ve got all your resources in one room, and you can ask in-depth questions regarding program specifics, financial aid and scholarships, and admission requirements,” Brames says. “You can get on-the-spot answers to a lot of questions that you would be searching for on websites.” Many of the larger fairs also offer informational sessions on

applying to college, filing for financial aid, and researching scholarship opportunities. The first step to ensuring a good college fair experience is choosing the right fair. Regional fairs are going to feature in-state colleges and colleges in neighboring states, whereas a national fair will include schools from coast to coast. If you know you’re interested in staying close to home, head to the regional fair, which will have more viable options for you. Once you’ve chosen one or two fairs to attend, make sure you register for them. Brames explains that this will help maximize interaction with colleges and will allow students to easily request additional information from their top choices without the need to fill out information cards for each school. When you get there, don’t wander around blindly. Go in with a game plan that will help you get the facts you need. Brames encourages students to come with a list of colleges to talk to. “But make sure you have a wide range of schools on it,” she says. “Keep your options open, but it’s going to be pretty hard to talk to every institution during a national fair.”

You don’t want an extremely narrow list that keeps you from learning about other interesting schools, but you also don’t want such a broad selection that you’re unable to use your time efficiently. Students should also bring questions that highlight what’s most important to them when making the decision. For example, if you’re interested in a school’s music program, ask each representative for information pertaining to that. “This will ensure students are capturing the same basic information for each institution they speak with and will allow them to note unique features of each school,” says Brames. Students should also make note of any application and scholarship deadlines. Nothing is worse than seeing you’re eligible for a large award two days after its due date. helpful resources—a professor, a coach, a financial-aid counselor, an alum, or a student involved in a sport or activity about which you’re passionate. With prior notice, you may even be able to sit in on a class or dine at a dorm cafeteria. “Colleges can accommodate many things if we know about them in advance,” says Adam Hohman, director of admissions at Manchester University. If someone in your party needs a golf cart or wheelchair, let the admissions office know beforehand, and be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Also make sure your visit doesn’t fall on a holiday or break. “You’ll get a ghost-town experience of a college when it’s not in session,” Hohman says. And create a checklist to evaluate each school. For example, does it offer on-campus service opportunities and support systems? “Just don’t pigeonhole yourself so you don’t see opportunities you may not have thought of,” Keeling says. optimizing your tour

Make your first stop the admissions office to meet with your admissions counselor. Must-sees on your campus tour include residence halls, at least one cafeteria, a library, academic buildings, and venues associated with your interests, such as a music hall or sports facilities. Pick up a copy of the student newspaper or other publications, and check out bulletin boards to see which types of events and activities are being advertised. Hohman recommends documenting your visit—taking pictures and tweeting about the features you like—so you’ll have a record. “As you make visits to multiple campuses, the details will start to get blurry,” he says. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions, especially those, Hohman suggests, that offer perspective versus facts. For example, asking about typical outcomes of the college’s accounting majors (either jobwise or further education) is more helpful than asking how long the school has had an accounting program.

taking the next step

When you’re back home, stay in contact with the people you met. Ensuing steps might include seeing a financial-aid consultant and completing additional paperwork. And if you’re interested in calling the university home, now’s the time to start planning a one-on-one follow-up tour. “A personalized visit later in the process is critical in determining if the college is right for you,” Hohman says. To get another perspective, consider revisiting at a different time and day of the week than your initial tour.

The A+ Application Completing college applications can be a daunting task. Here’s some advice from Manchester University’s Adam Hohman to help make yours shine. Q How

can applicants stand out to an admissions counselor?

A One of the most important things a student can do is

answer a question in a way that expresses who they are. For example, if the question is about involvement, instead of listing what they’ve done, it’s much more engaging when they tell stories about what they’ve done or express why they enjoy doing it. Those responses stand out when you’re looking at myriad applications.

Parents bring their son to Manchester University on move-in day.

Q What are common mistakes you see?

A Leaving off an email address or providing an email

He also advises keeping questions for students direct and more personal, such as asking about what they do for fun and what benefits they believe they’re getting from this school versus another. Athletes should ask the coach about the program, the practice and competition schedule, and how to balance academics with athletics. And think beyond freshman year. It’s important to know what opportunities are available to further your skills and development as an upperclassman. “Ask what the career center has to offer and what internship and study-abroad opportunities are available,” Keeling says. “Ask about the types of experiences that really build your resume.” Students should also scope out the area adjacent to the campus so they can see what shops and restaurants are within walking distance and get a feel for the overall neighborhood. “After the tour, drive or walk around some more and visit places you may not have seen,” Keeling says.

address they don’t intend to utilize. It can cripple a university’s ability to communicate effectively. Also, compartmentalizing themselves too soon and putting themselves into a box when it comes to a major. Many high school students should still be exploring their options instead of stating a defined path. Q Can

you give some tips for crafting a great application essay?

A Students often stress over the essay too much. We’re

not trying to evaluate them on a single masterpiece. It’s more about them being thorough, not having spelling and grammar mistakes, and expressing ideas in a compelling way. Many colleges suggest essay topics but allow students to choose their own. Nine times out of 10, students will do better with a topic of their choice.

ANDERSON UNIVERSITY What’s more important than a job? At Anderson University, that’s a question we ask ourselves often. While 95 percent of our graduates find success in the workforce, what is equally significant is that they enter the job market with an understanding that a life rooted in faith and service leads to a life and career of distinction, excellence, and impact. 17,000. It’s the number of students who have traveled overseas throughout the last five decades—not solely to experience different cultures, but to study, to serve, and to share, making global connections as they learn about different worldviews, customs, and complex issues. 22,000. It’s the physical manifestation of hands and feet in action, the hours of community service given by the AU community each year—to organizations like Operation Love, Vision Revision, The Christian Center, and TAPP (Tumani AIDS Prevention Program). We can boast about our graduate outcome rates. We can share data about our Falls School of Business students who manage a high-performing $1.3 million Raven Investment Fund. We can talk about how our faculty haven’t lost themselves to the world of academia—working hard to pioneer research, projects, and organizations in their fields, but unless our students are living by a greater mission, none of that matters. While we may begin our story at AU, the true narrative begins to unfold when our students enter the world, putting faith and service into action. And our graduates are doing just that—over and over again. Learn more at anderson.edu/admissions or at #myAUstory on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGE SJC‘s Biology and Business Departments are “Centers of Excellence” that lead our students to successful outcomes through internships, alumni-based networking, and hands-on experience by PhD experts in their field. Forensic Science is a unique concentration within the Biology Department and all incoming STEM students, including Computer Science and Mathematics, have the opportunity to move-in to campus early to meet current student leaders and conduct research with professors before classes begin and throughout freshmen year. Business students have the luxury of utilizing a new state-of-the-art business lab with two 80-inch monitors used to SKYPE alumni CEOs and other successful professionals who benefited through the Core Program’s integration within their major. Digital Media & Journalism and Computer Science both have received remarkable upgrades to technology and facilities to provide students with enhanced, practical-learning applications that immediately impact their ability to perform in their professional field from day one. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located inRensselaer, Indiana, approximately 90 minutes from both Chicago and Indianapolis,on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of nearly 1,100 students. Saint Joseph’s College is the only college with the Core Program, the heart of the SJCcurriculum. At other colleges, students are required to take a number of courses indifferent areas to fulfill their general education requirements. This often takes placeduring the first year or two of the student’s college experience. However, at SJC theserequired general education courses are evenly spread out through a student’s fouryears at the College. This means that you get the benefit of

beginning study of yourmajor in your first year of collegewhile developing critical speaking, thinking, and writing skills on the journey to graduation. For our students who have declared a major, this gives the benefit of four years ofstudy in the major as well as four years of general education. Students learn fromstudents of other majors, and writing and other communication skills are developedthroughout the four years of the college experience. At SJC, students are welcome to become involved in Campus Ministry in whicheverways they choose. From serving as a liturgical minister at Mass to volunteering fortrips to local food pantries and soup kitchens, students have every opportunityfi nd their place in Campus Ministry at SJC.

WABASH COLLEGE

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A WABASH MAN It means you are serious. At Wabash and in life, that’s what separates the men from the boys. If you are serious, you welcome challenge and you care about character. You have real, tangible goals and you’re ready to do whatever it takes to meet them. Wabash men know how to have fun (come to the Monon Bell Game and see for yourself), but they’re not your typical college students. They have different priorities. Like traveling to Peru to tackle global health problems, winning a national championship, or conducting cutting edge scientific research during summer “break.” If you are serious about your future and have goals like getting into Harvard Law, starting a community arts program in downtown Indy, or landing a coveted microfinance job in Southeast Asia, then you need to look at Wabash. We’re not messing around. This is about your future. Seriously.
