Spring/Summer 2018 Volume 49, Issue 1 The Cathedral Highlights is published two times annually by Cathedral High School for alumni, parents, and friends. “Some call it overconfidence; I call it faith.” These words, spoken by a teacher to our student body as part of our morning prayer in the last week of May, summarizes our Cathedral perspective very well. For 100 years, we have educated the hearts and minds of students from all over central Indiana with a high level of confidence that God and our Catholic faith will guide and support us. We now look forward to August when we will continue to build on our legacy as a premiere Catholic school in Indianapolis. As we approach all of the special events that go along with our centennial, I ask all of you, no matter your connection to the Cathedral family, to pause, reflect, and thank God for the gift of being connected to this great and blessed place. My gratitude flows from a very personal place, as a father. Father’s Day is a reminder of the special role we have as fathers to provide for our families and to give our children the best possible opportunities. When I moved my family here from Michigan two years ago, I had a high level of confidence/faith that I was being a good father by having my children attend Cathedral High School. That feeling has grown immensely and in a special way. My two eldest children, Robbie ‘17, and Maria Gabriela ‘18, will forever be Cathedral graduates. I understand that we have many terrific schools in our area, but I know that as Cathedral graduates, my children have been given the best gift I could provide: a gift of faith in action, of educated hearts and minds, and the gift of an automatic enrollment in a lifelong connection to this Irish family. Our Cathedral family was born downtown 100 years ago and raised on the hill on 56th street. I love my children as we all do, and this gift of Cathedral, given with love, is precious. As we move forward, we are tempted to rest on our laurels and reminisce about the good ol’ days. We definitely plan to do that as we gather together in September. However, we are also looking forward with energy and passion. I am committed to lead Cathedral into the future, one day at a time, with an Irish determination to continue to lead the way in the ever-changing field of education. Our board of directors sets the vision and tone for our future, and this vision and tone are the impetus for our strategic planning and execution. Our mission statement guides us, as well; and we strive to “...transform a diverse group of students spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically to have the competence to see and the courage to act.” We take this mission statement very sincerely, and we are devoted to living it out each day. Our current strategic plan continues to focus on ensuring the viability of our school well into the future, and to ensuring that our teachers have the tools and support they need to continue their tremendous work with our students. Our plan also addresses our mission in that it supports our commitment to diversity through tuition assistance. In addition, we plan to improve our facilities in all areas, especially in the STEM disciplines. The further development of our athletic facilities at Brunette Park is in our plan, as well. If you are reading this, you are somehow a part of the Cathedral family. If you are an active, involved member, I thank you for your dedication. If not, now is the time to reconnect with us! I urge all of you to read this publication and act on the opportunities to be a part of the Cathedral family again at a renewed level. If it has been awhile since you have visited our campus, now is the time! I urge you to visit us soon, ideally during our anniversary year. You will be pleasantly surprised to see that we are as strong as ever, and yet firmly committed to further development. Thank you for your renewed support, and please join me in thanking God for our school and asking Him to continue to bless us for another 100 years, one day at a time!

Faithfully,

Robert A. Bridges President

Opening Prayer from Commencement 2018 As we reflect over the past 4 years, we take a moment to thank you for all Cathedral has brought into our lives. We thank you, Lord, for every experience we had on the Hill, that helped us to grow. We thank you for the relationships we formed, the challenges we overcame, and the hope we cultivated. When we were scared, you showed us strength. Where we lacked faith, you filled our hearts with peace. When we felt lost, you revealed our path. We thank you for the joyful days, the trying days, and the days plain and simple, because collectively, they created our story and led us to where we needed to be. Above all, we thank you for moments like this one. Not quite four years ago, we entered the first day of freshman year—optimistic. Since that day, we grew to understand what the Cathedral family means. Help us to always feel that sense of community in the people around us. Watch over us as we take this next step. Because although it feels like an ending, it’s just the first day of the rest of our lives.

FEATURE: OUR LEGACY IS A PART OF CATHEDRAL’S LEGACY

Our Legacy is a Part of

Cathedral’s Legacy In 1918, Cathedral’s doors welcomed her first class of 90 students. Since then, more than 16,000 alumni have graduated and profoundly impacted the communities in which they live – while keeping Cathedral close to their hearts. We are fortunate that many of Cathedral’s alumni, current and past parents and grandparents, faculty, staff, board members, and other friends

The Stephens Family Our Cathedral story… We see Cathedral as a longstanding family tradition. Joanie, Jack, and Eddie first began attending Cathedral events when they were babies – so the campus felt like home by the time they enrolled. Today, we attend all the events we can, always supporting the Irish! Our allegiance to Cathedral extends beyond our time on campus. At a recent Baptism, in South Bend, we spontaneously started singing the Irish blessing and the school song. Non-Cathedral guests were shocked at the loyalty and love we have for our school.

Eddie ’11, Joanie ‘17, Carol ‘79, Jack ’13, Greg

“We have made lifelong friends with wonderful families from our Cathedral connections. We are thankful for those who came before us and made a Cathedral education possible for our family, and we want to give that gift to those who will come after us. Happy 100th Birthday, Cathedral!” Cathedral’s 100th anniversary matters to us because…

What it means to be alumni…

Cathedral Alumni are in every city and community around the world. Everywhere we go, someone knows a current Cathedral student or graduate. We’ve been stopped at the grocery store by a family hoping to be in the class of 2021 and have met alumni at the airport who want to talk about their days on the hill. Cathedral alumni are proud and want to carry on the Irish traditions. Jack has returned to lead a senior retreat. He also helps coach golf. Eddie learned valuable lessons of teamwork and leadership while in the Student Council that he uses every day. We know firsthand that the students who have walked the halls at Cathedral go out into the world and make it a better place!

Cathedral has been our second family. She has helped shaped us into who we are today. Cathedral has opened the doors to many unbelievable opportunities, like when Joanie traveled to Africa for a mission trip. Being able to call ourselves alumni of Cathedral High School is special. We are glad to be able to celebrate the wonderful success she has had the last 100 years. Today, Cathedral stands tall in her values, academics, and excellence and will be educating the finest young men and women for at least the next 100 years! 6

and supporters have started their own Cathedral legacy by giving their time, prayer, and treasure. Every individual and every family at Cathedral has a unique philanthropic mission, and when taken together, it shapes who we are and allows us to look brightly to the future. As we seek to build on our 100-year legacy, we have big plans to further our mission by investing in multiple strategic enhancements and capital projects. In addition to creating plans to invest in the future success of Cathedral, we are also taking the time to look back and celebrate our many accomplishments, traditions, and families. One way in which we are excited to celebrate Cathedral is at the Grand Gala on September 15th. If you want to be a part of this community that gives so much back to our school, considering joining us and getting involved by visiting gocathedral.com/100 for more information.

Read on to find out why these members of the Cathedral family support our vision for the future as we look to the next one-hundred years:

The Sherfick Family

Ted, Kim, Abbi ‘17, Andrew ‘19

“We’ve been part of the Cathedral family for five years now and have witnessed amazing things. It is evident that everyone employed at Cathedral is invested in the success of our kids and takes a holistic approach in supporting them on their journey through high school and beyond. We are so blessed to be part of the Cathedral family.”

We chose Cathedral because... Abbi and Andrew attended school in a very large school district. Ted’s mother sent him and his siblings to Catholic schools because she knew the importance of having spiritual growth and faith in the classroom. It was after her passing and the growing concerns we had with their current school size that made us realize that we needed to find a school that aligned with our beliefs and would be a better fit for our family. We were impressed with the student population and the alumni support of the school. We knew that since the student body was that engaged and the alumni were still heavily involved it must be a special place. It takes a village to raise children and knew we had a partner that would instill our beliefs while they were on campus.

Our favorite Cathedral memory... Abbi was not happy about changing schools and it was a very quiet car ride on the first day of school. When we turned onto the Cathedral campus, we were met with a hill full of toilet papered trees and the senior class lining the street cheering on the incoming students. Abbi’s eyes brightened and a huge smile appeared on her face. She was hooked at that very moment.

We support Cathedral’s mission and vision for the future because... Our experience at Cathedral has been unparalleled and we want to help ensure other families have the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing school and wonderful community. WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 7

Cathedral Inspires a New Generation of School Leaders Erin Rearson ’98 Simpson is the principal at Brookside School #54. Simpson has been there since 2015 where she has built a reputation for establishing positive relationships with students and families and using those relationships to help drive improved performance. “I was given leadership opportunities at Cathedral and had staff who believed in me and encouraged me,” says Simpson. “When you have supportive people around you building you up, there is no limit to what you can achieve.” Simpson also credits both her cheerleading coach and her softball coach with helping her develop her leadership skills. “Linda Bamrick encouraged me and helped me grow as an individual and as a player.”

“When you have supportive people around you building you up, there is no limit to what you can achieve.”

Bakari Posey ’02 is credited with transforming James Whitcomb Riley, Indianapolis Public School #43. Parents at the midtown school say thanks to Posey’s positive leadership, the school has a clear set of expectations and consequences. As a result, the atmosphere at the school has greatly improved in the two years that Posey has been principal. “I liked so many of my teachers at Cathedral and I’d have to say Dick Nuttall and Marcus Robinson were probably my favorites,” says Posey. “Mr. Nuttall helped to develop me into being a stronger student through his accountability and classroom rigor. Mr. Robinson was an example of something that was possible for me being a young black male who was interested in teaching. He was my first male teacher of color and a role model for me professionally.”

LIFELONG CONNECTIONS

As Cathedral High School celebrates her 100th year of educating hearts and minds, it is undeniable that she has produced countless leaders in a wide range of fields−from athletics to the arts, to medicine and mechanical engineering. In addition to being leaders in those careers and many others, three Cathedral graduates are making their mark as leaders in education here in Indianapolis.

Another graduate of Cathedral, Kevin Kubacki ’94, also credits Nuttall for encouraging his career path. Kubacki is the Executive Director of the Neighborhood Charter Network in Indianapolis. NCN schools include Enlace Academy on Indy’s west side and Kindezi Academy, which is located on the east side of town. At both schools, teachers and administrators focus on building relationships and personalizing education for all students. Kubacki says the Holy Cross value of Family influenced how he leads his schools. “Families have high expectations for each other, and they support each other as they strive to become the best versions of the themselves,” says Kubacki. “I experienced this familial love at Cathedral, and I strive to create that same culture in the schools I have built.” Like Posey, Kubacki says Dick Nuttall was a huge influence in his life. “Mr. Nuttall saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself, and through a combination of high expectations and strong support, he helped me grow into a better version of myself,” says Kubacki. “That pairing of expectation and support is, in fact, the way I explain how teachers are an extension of parental love.” Posey and Kubacki both returned to Cathedral to teach before they began their careers in school administration. Kubacki taught English for 10 years and oversaw the school’s IB program. He also coached the girls’ soccer team to two state championships in 2007 and 2009. Posey taught English at Cathedral for four years.

“Families have high expectations for each other, and they support each other as they strive to become the best versions of the themselves,” says Kubacki. “I experienced this familial love at Cathedral, and I strive to create that same culture in the schools I have built.”

“The most important piece that Cathedral has grown and cultivated over the years is a strong unique culture that is just ‘the way’ things are handled and done in the school. Cathedral has shown me how important a strong school culture is for a school community,” says Posey. “I enjoyed the faith piece at Cathedral,” adds Simpson. “It helped me to see that God is at the center. Being a leader can be difficult at times and it is comforting knowing that God doesn’t expect me to do things on my own. What a great feeling to know that He is with me to guide me.” WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 9

Alumna Enjoying Her ‘Dream Job’ and So Much More

As a design researcher at Microsoft, Dr. Melissa DeCapua ’07 leads an exciting professional life. Her job responsibilities include analyzing human behavior and conducting research. “I study how people interact with emerging technologies, and I use these findings to help build better user experiences,” says DeCapua. “I manage a small team of researchers, and conduct ethnographic field research around the world. I travel with a team of videographers to produce short documentary-style films that summarize my findings and build empathy for customers.” DeCapua took an interesting path on her way to her selfprofessed “dream job.” After graduating from Cathedral, she double majored in nursing and photography and minored in psychology at Xavier University. She then studied psychiatry at Vanderbilt University, completing her doctorate in nursing practice. Most recently, she studied human-centered design and engineering at University of Washington. “I started my career as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in psychosomatic medicine,” DeCapua explains. “A writer at heart, I created a blog to amplify my voice and my perspective on health innovation and issues facing the nurse practitioner profession.” DeCapua’s writing caught the attention of Microsoft. “Microsoft began sending me to their product launch events and healthcare conferences. Through these experiences, I met Microsoft’s Chief Nursing Strategist who introduced me to the field of design research.” DeCapua says Cathedral gave her breadth of knowledge and prepared her to seek depth of knowledge in any field she chose. “I learned how to learn at Cathedral,” she says, “which has been the bedrock of my success.” “Most people don’t have the opportunity to attend a high school like Cathedral, and I am profoundly grateful. The facilities, resources, teachers, academics, sports, and arts reflect a dedication to learning and personal growth.” While design research is DeCapua’s day job, she spends her evenings advocating for nurse practitioner rights on both the state and national level through blogging and lobbying efforts. “I’ve navigated my career and education by fiercely pursing my interest. I made those big decisions by following what excited me and by not fearing uncertainty. Even when I wasn’t sure how to do something, I trusted myself to figure it out.” DeCapua credits Sara Koehler, her senior year theology teacher, for helping her develop the kind of self confidence needed to take great leaps of faith. “(Mrs. Koehler) taught me to trust myself; she encouraged self reflection, and she showed me that sometimes, rules should be broken.” “Also, Mrs. Katie Gallagher’s AP psychology class sparked my interest in the study of human behavior, which led me 10

“I learned how to learn at Cathedral,” she says, “which has been the bedrock of my success.” to pursue higher education in both psychiatry and humancomputer interaction.” DeCapua has fiercely followed her passions and she offers the same advice to current Cathedral students. “Fearlessly pursue your ambitions. Listen to yourself and your passions. Find something that doesn’t feel like a career, but instead brings you joy and excitement. Don’t succumb to apathy or mediocrity, and don’t shy away from uncertainty. Oh yeah, and question everything.” Pretty sound advice from a Cathedral graduate who has designed a successful career while advocating for nurses and nurse practitioners around the country. Class of 2018 Graduation

Commencement Speech by Liam Moore, Valedictorian, Class of 2018

The Cathedral High School mission statement is ambitious to say the least. It states Cathedral strives to “transform a diverse group of students spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically”. That’s a tall order to ask of any institution, but after spending four years on her campus, sharing both trials and triumphs with her students and faculty, I can definitively say Cathedral has accomplished her mission. Some of these transformations are easier to perceive than others. It’s not difficult to see we have changed physically and intellectually in our four years at Cathedral. While I am certainly grateful for these improvements, they do not necessarily make Cathedral unique. After all, it’s safe to assume that all students change physically and intellectually no matter what high school they attend. What makes Cathedral unique is how it encourages the spiritual, social, and emotional growth of all who travel up the hill. To put it simply, Cathedral invites us into a family. From the moment, we arrived on the campus back in the fall of 2014 as freshmen,

we became a part of a greater community, one which truly wants the best for each one of us. Yet, inside of the larger body, we established a closer bond as the Class of 2018. The Class of 2018 has laughed together at football games and Irish 500s, lived together through Winterfests and Mission Trips. And with a heavy heart, we have lost together. Reflecting on these hardships, it can be easy to fall back into the sadness we experienced. Over the past four years alone, we have lost coaches, leaders, friends, and family. But the one thing we never lost was hope. There is a poem titled “The Race” by D.H. Groberg. It happens to be a personal favorite of mine. I will not share the whole poem but to briefly summarize it, there is a boy who dreams of winning a race in order to impress his father, but the boy keeps stumbling. Every time he falls, he feels defeated, yet he rises and continues to run. Near the conclusion of the work, there is a stanza that always moves me. I would like to share it with you. “For all life is like that race With ups and downs and all And all you have to do to win Is rise each time you fall.” 18

In my opinion, the Class of 2018 have become the greatest victors because every time we tripped or got knocked down, we not only stood back up, but we did it together. Every time one of us fell, we all extended a hand. The Class of 2018 will not be defined by the tragedies we suffered. Instead we will be remembered by how we overcame adversity. Our class could easily have been a class of “could haves” or “if onlys”, yet through each other, we surpassed those limitations. Some of us will become doctors, lawyers, artists, or educators and still others will be mothers, fathers, aunts, or uncles. We all started from different places when we came to Cathedral and, once we leave, we will all forge our own new paths. But no matter what we end up doing, we will change the world. Our impact on the world will not be determined by what GPA we maintain or how much money we make. Our mark will be determined by our compassion. Cathedral has taught me many things over the years, but possibly the most important lesson I have learned is that even the smallest act of kindness can change a life permanently. This action does not need to be some grand philanthropic gesture or noble sacrifice.

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2018

It can be as simple as a smile in the hallway or taking a few seconds to ask someone about their day. All that it really takes is an individual with the competence to see and the courage to act and the world can be changed forever. Much to the chagrin of Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Keyes, I may never remember conic sections or the proper way to find complexity, but I will never forget you, Class of 2018. Through our communal experiences, good and bad, we have formed bonds and discovered qualities that we can constantly carry with us. Cathedral gave us the opportunity to create connections that can last a lifetime, all we need to do is weave them into the fabric of our lives. Cathedral has done her part, now it’s our time to take up the responsibility. The onus has fallen to us to take the lessons we have learned and share them with the world. We have been handed the tools to achieve great things, so let’s go and show the world what Cathedral graduates can do. I love you all and I cannot wait to see you in the future. Thank you.

John O’Hara ‘02, psychology teacher and head coach of boys and girls track and field, was chosen by the seniors to address the Class of 2018 at this year’s commencement ceremonies on May 20. This is his speech. It is a distinct honor to speak to you as not only as a teacher, a coach, a retreat leader, a friend but most importantly as an alum. Being the first alum to address a graduating class is something that I hold near and dear to me, and take very seriously. Oh... Seriously?... That many alums have already done this?... Wow… That’s a lot… Even you? Let’s try this again. It is a distinct honor to speak to you as not only as a teacher, a coach, a retreat leader, a friend, but also as an alum. Here we are class of 2018. In this beautiful building… named after a bank. Old National Center… really grips you. But I do have some good news. All graduates have been preapproved for the Old National Platinum Credit Card… Congratulations! In all seriousness we gather here to honor you, pray with you, and celebrate you. Finding the time to put into words what this class has meant to me was difficult. They have done so much for Cathedral High School, its constituents, and its future. What a beautiful gift to bestow upon others. Especially those you don’t even know. To have such a short time frame to tell you what you mean to me, your educators, and your families has been tough. But all I can do is try my best, because that’s what you deserve. LOVE. L-O-V-E. A word that is held in high regard. A word that emotes. A word that we take lightly or for granted sometimes. But there is more to it. You type the word, you say the word, you even emojify the word… But most importantly you tell people that you LOVE them. In the book of Colossians, it says “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Love can be the base, Love can be your foundation, love can be your beginning and end. LOVE. L-O-V-E. L – L stands for Labor. I’d like you take your left hand and make a fist. Your fist represents the grit and determination needed to succeed at the next level in life.

was considered much less important than how one got there: prestige was earned by tackling the most unforgiving routes with minimal equipment, in the boldest style imaginable.” Leaving the halls of Cathedral, and the beautiful Hill you have called home, can be a daunting task, but with the foundation of work ethic and fortitude that you have built, is what you can rely on. Out work, out hustle, and fall in LOVE with your craft in order to achieve what you desire. O – O is for Outliers Take your right hand and now surround your left hand. Right now I want you to think about someone who has positively impacted your young life. Who has put you in a situation for betterment, success, happiness? Think of that person right now. See their face. Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers… Which you will find a copy underneath all of your seats… Just kidding That was too easy. Gladwell’s message about who Outliers is so very significant. His message is the following:

Labor… or to work. Class of 2018 I have a secret to share with you…

“teach us that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family…”

Lean in… A little closer… You’re going to have to work really really hard to achieve what you want. I’ve been told throughout my life that its not supposed to be easy, its supposed to be hard to achieve success. No truer words have ever been spoken. As you go off to do what you want and have the freedom to choose what line of work you want to be in. Choose a labor of love, choose something you can attach your name to, and be proud of. When it is all said and done, that’s what you have to hold onto.

This is your family; this is your culture; everyone here is an outlier for you. The people behind you and the people behind me are truly one of a kind. They pray for you. What a powerful thing to do for someone else. Think of how selfless of an act that is? To take time out of a busy day… stop… think about you and pray for you. An amazing habit you can take with you wherever you may go. I even asked them to tell me something about the class of 2018. Here is what they had to say:

It is your name on the diploma, it is your name on the resume, it is your name on that business card. Hold that true to your heart. At retreat I talked to you about climbing the mountain, and shared with you this quote from my favorite book Into Thin Air, written by John Krakauer. He says “Getting to the top of any given mountain

meaning, lasting or existing forever. Will we all be in the same room ever again? No. But your days, moments, and people you have shared your experience with is Eternal. But I’ll have you know, that the eternity of the love we don’t see or feel on a regular basis, is always with us. Last year I enjoyed an off period with Father John. A great man with an unbelievable sense of humor and love for students like you.

V – V is for Valor Take your commencement program and make the letter V and hold it in your lap. Valor is a fantastic word, one that holds such great meaning. It means courage in the face of danger. Let me give you an example. When I was a freshman, walking the halls of Cathedral I was petrified of girls. As an Eastsider talking to a north deanery girl with the unibrow I had… I tell you what… that was valor my friends. You might be thinking that you haven’t experienced real danger. But you have revealed to me that you are fearful of certain dangers. About 6 months ago my AP Psychology students wrote down what they feared. Anonymously, the answer I saw most was FAILURE. Failure should not be the item to fear. You should fear what you do with that failure. You’re going to fail, it’s inevitable. No one has conquered every task they have faced. Winston Churchill said it best, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

One day I asked Father a question… I said… Father… what is it about these students that you enjoy so much. Father said, “they are genuinely loving kids, and I feel full when I am around them.” Fr. John is eternal. And… Especially for the class of 2018. Being kind is Eternal. As I told many in my Psych class, once you find those truly genuine people that you love, hold onto them and cherish them, love them. Labor to make the love work Love your Outliers Display Valor in the face of fear And know that this Love is truly Eternal.

Class of 2018, I do not envy what you have had to endure during your high school career. Although I have been in a similar situation as you, the valor you have displayed over the course of your difficult times is remarkable. The LOVE you have shown for one another is that of a family that will stare danger in the face and conquer it. For that, I am truly grateful to have witnessed.

Finally… Father John had a saying… He said, keep your fork. Referring to the best part of the meal was at the end. The best part of your life is still to come 2018. Keep your fork. I love you. Thank you.

E – E is for Eternal I ask the Class of 2018 to hold hands. Graduates on the end of each row, reach your free hand and place it on the shoulder of the person in front of you. True love is Eternal. Now that all of you are connected, I think about this link, and how it is unbroken. Eternal,

“Labor to make the love work.

Love your Outliers.

Display Valor in the face of fear.

And know that this Love is truly Eternal.”

Annual Easter Egg Hunt Special thanks to the Cathedral Alumni Association for hosting an EGG-cellent Easter Egg Hunt on our beautiful campus.

Special Guest Addresses Students During Black History Month Cathedral was so honored to have Carolyn McKinstry as our keynote speaker for the Black History Month Program. Our distinguished guest is a survivor of the Civil Rights struggle. She was present in September of 1963 when the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama was bombed. As a teenager, she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and bravely faced stinging fire hoses during the battle for equal rights in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Carolyn McKinstry said she believes courage comes from God. We thank God for your courage, Mrs. McKinstry, and we thank you for spending time with our Cathedral community.

IRISH UPDATES

Cathedral Fund Update Each year, annual contributions support the school’s financial needs not covered by tuition alone. These funds are crucial as they help to recruit and retain our esteemed teachers, support academics and athletic programs, classrooms, facilities, and tuition assistance. Yearround fundraising includes the Phone-A-Thon, the Cathedral Fund and events such as ShamrAuction - which this year raised $595,000! The impact of annual fundraising is far-reaching! More than $2.6 million was used for tuition assistance this school year alone, which made the Cathedral experience possible for many students. The students continue to flourish with the addition of the flexible learning spaces. Mary Poppins was a smash, the Mission Trip was a huge success, and Brunette Park played host to the softball and baseball teams this season. These and many more accomplishments were made possible through the generosity of donors like you. “We are extremely blessed by the Cathedral community of alumni, parents, students and friends who believe in the Holy Cross values taught here at Cathedral. Your gifts to Cathedral are part of a nearly 100-year legacy and your continued support will keep that legacy alive for the next 100 years.” - Nicole Farrell ‘98 Beasley, Vice President for Advancement

Shamrock Scholars Luncheon What a joy for us to have so many donors attend our Shamrock Scholars luncheon. The Shamrock Scholars Program was created by alumni and friends who wanted more than a way to give — they wanted a way to give back and a chance to change a life. Shamrock Scholar donors commit to providing need-based tuition assistance for a specific student at Cathedral for all four years of their education. Donors are invited to remain anonymous or build a relationship with their grantee. God bless all of our Shamrock Scholars and thank you for changing lives and helping Cathedral maintain her promise of socioeconomic diversity. Bill Peebles ‘88: Back Home Again at Cathedral For Bill Peebles ’88, it feels good to be back at Cathedral High School, this time as the varsity head football coach. Then again, Peebles never really left Cathedral. Peebles played on Cathedral’s first state championship team in 1986. His father, Julian Peebles ’64, is a former Cathedral president. Peebles was the Fighting Irish’s assistant coach and offensive coordinator for 10 years. He was part of the staff that captured state championships in 1996, 1998, and 1999. In addition, he was Dean of Students his last five years at Cathedral. Even when he left Cathedral to coach at other schools, Peebles remained an active member of the community. His two children, Jacob ’12 and Monica ’13, graduated from Cathedral. Also, his wife Jeanne’s daughter, Molly O’Brien, graduated from Cathedral in 2010. He has had countless cousins, nieces, and nephews who have attended Cathedral. And so, it’s not hard to see why Peebles’ transition has been an easy one. “Rick Streiff has been extremely helpful, as well as other teachers and staff,” says Peebles. “I really feel like I’m back home.” Peebles says when he was a student, he thought about what it would be like to coach the Fighting Irish. Once he started his coaching career, however, he says returning to Cathedral was never really a goal. “When I was at Southport, I was very happy there. It was the same thing when I was at Lawrence Central. When the varsity head football coaching job became open here, however, I knew it was a job that I couldn’t turn down.” Peebles is anxious to get down to work with his team this summer. “We have some great players on the 2018/19 team. They are a hardworking group and they’re ready to get to down to business.” Peebles knows he has some big shoes to fill, but says he can’t worry about the way other Cathedral coaches did things. “I played for Mike (McGinley) and I coached with Jimmy (O’Hara) and Rick

(Streiff). I know all of those guys well and they are my friends. I have to do the most with what I have and do the best job that I can. I feel some pressure, most of which I put on myself.” In addition to coaching the Fighting Irish, Peebles is serving as an admissions liaison for Cathedral. “My role is to basically help coaches and club moderators identify students who might be interested in attending Cathedral. From a communications standpoint, I know I can help connect coaches, moderators and club leaders to students who would be a great fit here at Cathedral,” says Peebles. “I will not, however, have a role in who gets admitted or who gets financial aid.” “Being able to add Bill to the admissions team is a blessing from God,” says Duane Emery, Vice President of Enrollment. “He has extensive knowledge of and passion for Cathedral High School. He will be a valuable addition as he helps connect potential students and families with Cathedral’s teachers, coaches, club moderators, students, and parents.” Peebles is thrilled to be a part of the Cathedral team—a team where family is everything. “At Cathedral, we have a community of people who genuinely care about each other. We have a passion for students being successful in everything that they do. It’s exciting to be a part of that again.” WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 29

boys lacrosse The tradition very much continued. Cathedral High School’s boys lacrosse program in 2018 continued to do what it has done through much of the last decade: Build a program that will contend for state titles over the long term. “If 2018 doesn’t result in a state championship it will result in us looking back and saying it was a year that was built to win multiple [future] championships; we’re very confident in that,” longtime coach Andy Gruber said shortly before the end of the 2018 regular season that featured a young, underclassdominated Irish team. The Royal Irish Rugby Society has been so good for so long, in fact, that the slightest disappointment can stand out – and Scott Peterson said that was the case for the Royal Irish late in the 2018 season. After playing in typically dominant fashion much of the season, the Royal Irish finished fourth in the Super Bracket of the 2018 Midwest Tournament in Elkhart, Ind., on the weekend of May 6-7. GIRLS TENNIS They were dominant. Again. They spent the season ranked among the best in the state. Again. Cathedral’s girls tennis team in fact was as good or better than any team in the state for a third consecutive season in 2018 – and that meant there was no question the season would be memorable and special. boys Basketball The disappointment was as real as the future is bright. That’s how Jason Delaney saw the 2017-2018 Cathedral High School boys basketball season – as one that was full of accomplishment and hope, and equally full of disappointment at the end. The Irish went 19-5 in Delaney’s second season as head coach. They were ranked No. 8 in the final Class 4A Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

BASEBALL The Cathedral High School baseball team had lofty goals in 2018.

A

As the season’s end approached, the Irish were putting themselves in position to make a run at those goals and to make yet another postseason run. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

boys golf

This was a special group.

That has been evident about the members of Cathedral High School’s boys golf team for a while, and Irish golf coach Patrick Fagan said that remained true during the 2018 season. The Irish were a strong team in 2018, with one of the best players in program history – senior Austin Vukovits – leading a talented, cohesive group that ranked among the best teams in the state of Indiana throughout much of the regular season. GIRLS LACROSSE

A strong program kept getting stronger.

Cathedral High School’s girls lacrosse team, long one of the state’s top programs, remained that way in 2018 in Mary Ann White’s first season as head coach – and the result was a strong regular season that moved the Irish in position for yet another postseason run. “We’re definitely in the place we want to be,” White said. “You always can improve and always can get better.”

GIRLS TRACK & Field

The future looks bright for Cathedral High School girls track and field.

That was true entering 2018, and it remained that way as the Lady Irish improved dramatically late in the season.

That improvement led to strong postseason performances, with the Lady Irish finishing second at the Indianapolis City Meet on May 7 and registering a fourth-place finish at the Sectional Meet at Lawrence Central on May 15. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

bowling The season was a lot of fun and the future looks bright.

A

As Mark Noe and the Cathedral High School girls and boys bowling programs see it, that’s a good start for two programs that made significant strides in multiple areas in 2017-2018. “They had a good attitude and a lot of fun,” Noe said recently. Noe, in his fourth season coaching the Irish bowling programs along with co-coach Josh Payne, said that was true of both the Irish boys and girls bowling programs this past season. While neither program advanced in the postseason, Noe said both programs appear to have as strong a future and foundation as they have had in some time. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

girls basketball

They came-oh-so close to their ultimate goal.

Reggen Melson sees a difficult objective simply.

That the Central Indiana Knights fell tantalizingly and frustratingly short didn’t prevent them from having a successful, memorable season in 2017-2018.

Excellence at the state level is the overall objective at Cathedral High School – and Melson says it’s simply and obviously the objective for Irish girls basketball, too.

It also didn’t prevent perhaps the best season in program history.

Getting there takes work, and the Irish are beginning that process under Melson during what has been a promising start to the 2017-2018 season.

“This was a unique season,” Knights coach Kevin Karlander said. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

“We’re getting there,” said Melson, in her first season as the Irish’s head coach after previous head coaching stints at Scecina and Crispus Attucks. “There’s a lot to change with a new coach coming in. We have a nice group of upperclassmen. Sometimes it takes longer than others, but we’re getting there.” Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

boys track and field The year was supposed to be a good one, and it was exactly that. Cathedral High School’s boys track and field team put together another strong season in 2018, with the strength coming from a core of young athletes who could give the program a bright future. “It’s a really fun season,” Irish track and field coach John O’Hara said. “This is a really hard-working group of kids and a really hard-working group of coaches. The kids are really buying into the program, buying into the process and the proof is in the pudding with a lot of personal records late in the year.” Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 33

cheerleading Our cheerleaders had another exciting year! In addition to appearances at numerous sporting events and RTV’s Friday Football Frenzy, the girls won the 2018 OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon Spirit Squad Competition. Each year secret judges help pick the winners. This is the third year in a row our cheerleaders have won the competition and a $1000 prize.

boys volleyball They were good throughout an emotional season. Cathedral High School’s boys volleyball team was good enough to make the final match of the 25th 2018 Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association State Tournament, and good enough to come oh-so close to a 10th state championship. They missed that, narrowly losing to Roncalli 3-1 – 15-25, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25 – in a tight title match at Southport High School on May 19, but the 2018 season again featured the Irish turning in a remarkable season as one of Indiana’s elite teams.
