INDIANA LATINO INSTITUTE The Indiana Latino Institute (ILI) is a 501(c)3 statewide non-profit organization committed to serving Latino communities across Indiana. Since 2001, ILI's efforts have focused on education and health programming, and in 2018, launched the Indiana Latino Leadership Circle program to increase the pool of Latino leaders within Indiana represented at the executive level. The Indiana Latino Institute will continue to elevate and empower Latino Hoosiers and work to improve all communities throughout the state.

2021 Latino Leadership Circle


INDIANA LATINO LEADERSHIP CIRCLE The Leadership Circle is an annual, 2 year-long commitment that incorporates a multi-pronged approach to bringing emerging Latinos front and center, both within the Latino community as well as the larger community as a whole. Through individualized mentoring, networking, and leadership development opportunities and think tank sessions based on issues of importance, these talented young leaders will have a unique opportunity to learn from established community members as well as gain valuable skills that will focus on their own empowerment. MISSION: The purpose of The Leadership Circle is to identify and mentor emerging Latino leaders by connecting them with respected, influential community leaders and strategic empowerment opportunities.

Hans Bernabé Commercial Banking, Portfolio Manager I

Old National Bank Hans was raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana and has lived in Indianapolis since 2018. While Management earning two associate degrees from Vincennes University — Collision Repair and Business Management — Hans worked as a Paint & Body shop assistant and Career Services worker. Shortly after, he ventured more into the business side of the industry and received a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Southern Indiana. He was then hired as a Credit Analyst for Old National Bank (ONB) during the winter of 2017. Hans works as an underwriter for the commercial banking department at ONB, assisting in risk management for the bank’s loan portfolio. Hans frequently gives credit for his academic/professional success to the mentors who counseled him throughout his career. Hans is the son of two proud parents; one a Peace Corps alumna who served in the small town of Pechiche, Ecuador and the other a native “Pechicheño”. Hans is a member of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail Young Professionals group and is an avid fitness enthusiast. He is also a member of the Young Professionals of Central Indiana group and is actively involved with Trader’s Point church in downtown Indianapolis.


Sofia Betancourt

Six Sigma Master Black Belt

Cummins, Inc. Sofia Betancourt is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt (MBB) at Cummins Inc. in Columbus, IN. Sofia was born in San Luis Potosí, México. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, México University and an MBA from the Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU). She is a certified 6S Green Belt (GB) and Black Belt (BB), as well as a HCD Practitioner. She started her career at Cummins Mexico in 2004 as a Technical Trainer. In 2008, Sofia moved to Columbus, IN as the Current Product Support (CPS) Service Information and Translations Manager where she developed and led global translations processes and strategies. In 2017, Sofia moved to a 6S BB role where she won a Business Impact Award for preventing $3.9M annually in warranty costs. In 2019, she moved to her current role where she has aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa driven business value in a multitude of process improvement aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa initiatives. Sofia enjoys spending quality time with her aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa husband and their two children. In her free time, she enjoys aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa playing tennis, traveling, taking care of their Labrador dog, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and socializing with her friends.


aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Roberto is a dedicated and driven Certified Senior Human aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Resources professional (SHRM-SCP) with experience in HRIS, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Software Implementation, and Talent Acquisition. Roberto is originally from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. At his early age, he participated and dedicated himself to organizing events of improvement and leadership for marginalized young people in his home state. At 17, Roberto was a political activist and youth representative of the National Action Party; he participated in campaigns to defend democracy and voting rights in Mexico. He completed his studies at the Tec de Monterrey in Mexico and Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Spain. Roberto moved to the United States 14 years ago. Since his arrival, he has dedicated himself to improving the lives of the people around him. After more than a decade of challenges and sacrifices, Roberto is dedicated to connecting Latinx talent with career opportunities and informed his connections of the benefits that the Latino community can bring to the country. Roberto is a faithful promoter of inclusivity and technology and firmly believes that the Latino Robertocommunity is and will be a core part of the development and prosperity of this nation to improve the lives of all.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Karina Garduño joined the IUPUI Multicultural Center in aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa June 2015. As the Senior Associate Director of Multicultural aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Programming, Karina works in several areas including: multicultural programmatic efforts, developing retention efforts and outreach for diverse student populations, accountability for affiliated student organizations, and support and advising in the center. In 2017 Karina took on the role of DACA point person for the IUPUI Campus. In 2018 this role expanded to include the IUFW campus. She provides information and trainings for faculty, staff and students on the challenges that DACA and Undocumented students may face, and serves on the several committees to review legislative and policy changes affecting DACA students. Prior to joining the Multicultural Center, Karina served as the Coordinator for Social Justice Education in the Office of Student Involvement where she helped to develop the major programming for Social Justice Education at IUPUI. Before Justice coming to IUPUI, she taught high school in the Indianapolis area for five year. Karina is a proud alumna of Indiana University- Bloomington. In 2005 she received her B.S. in Secondary Spanish Education her M.S. in Higher Education Student Affairs (2013).

Luis Hernandez Litigation Associate

Bose McKinney & Evans, LLP Luis Hernandez is an associate in the Litigation Group at Bose McKinney & Evans. He advises clients in a wide array of commercial litigation matters. Prior to joining Bose McKinney & Evans, Luis started a residential property management company. Additionally, he worked as a summer associate at Bose McKinney & Evans, as well as a legal intern at Just Help, a legal advocacy agency in Elkhart County. He has worked with the Re-entry and Community Help program at IU Robert H. McKinney and volunteered in the immigration department with the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic.


Alex Hunt

Ascension St. Vincent Alex Hunt is the Manger of Physician Practice Operations at the Ascension St. Vincent Health, Wellness & Preventive Care Institute. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Alex grew up on the east side of the Minnisota east side of the Minnesota Twin Cities. He received his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Iowa State University while also serving on the faculty board for the Leadership Studies Program. After graduation, he attended The College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota where he completed an accelerated master’s degree in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in cardiology. He then completed his internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Alex worked in the Cardiovascular Health Clinic serving patients with valve repairs, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery bypasses, and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa heart transplants. Since moving to Indiana in December of 2018, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa he has enjoyed exploring new parks, sights, and cities with aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa his wife, Caitlin, and their dog Sox. Alex has also taken an aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa interest in learning about the history of Indiana as well as aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa the past and present sports teams.


aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Victor Lizano is the son of Costa Rican immigrants who aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa came to Indianapolis in 1958. He attended Indiana aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa University until 1990, and is a founder of the first Latino oriented Greek letter fraternity at Indiana University, Bloomington, Sigma Lambda Beta. In 1993 Mr. Lizano moved to Los Angeles, CA and began a career in the financial services sector. He began by regionally launching and proctoring an all-Spanish language employee certification program at a Fortune 50 financial institution. Further professional experiences led him to manage the Spanish language pilot programs for a national nonprofit telethon, a Fortune 50 finance company's all-Spanish language 15-branch network, as well as the Hispanic marketing programs for over 250 independent pharmacies. His service efforts pro g rams range from local education services to leadership roles in Latino outreach and services with the American Diabetes Association, PBS Los Angeles, and more. Victor has the blessing of 2 daughters and a 4-legged best friend and rescue named Ollie. His hobbies include photography, reading comics, gardening and napping.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa As the Service Line Administrator at IU Health Physicians, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Melissa has operational and strategic oversight of the clinical, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa research and academic initiatives for the Hospitalist Division, encompassing 160+ physicians and 60+ Advance Practice Providers across seven IU Health Hospitals including telemedicine services. She is responsible for both the business and clinical operations including care management, physician engagement, provider recruitment/onboarding/ retention, project management and patient engagement. In addition to her role, she is also an active mentor for the Fairbanks School of Public Health and Indiana Healthcare Executives Network member. She graduated with a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the IUPUI Fairbanks School of Public Health and holds a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration from the IU School of Medicine. Melissa and her husband, Mace, live on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis and are most often found camping and hiking during their free time; exploring the many great State and National Parks!

Hector Morales Grant Coordinator

Central Indiana Community Foundation Hector Morales Hernandez is Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF)'s Grant Coordinator. Hector has proven to be successful in the strategic and managerial guidance guidance of law firms and financial firms in a variety of roles, including but not limited to operations, finance, accounting, and marketing. He joined CICF after serving as an operations manager at the law firm Karina Zazueta, LLC. Hector also has a small marketing company called Morales Marketing, LLC that primarily guides organizations with their social media presence and marketing strategies. Hector worked at a small start-up in California creating code for smartphone applications. Hector Morales Hernandez earned a BA from Kelley School of Business.


Carina Olaru

Director, Latino Cultural Center Director, Student Advocacy and Education

Purdue University Originally from the South side of Chicago by way of Mexican parents, Carina Olaru joined Purdue University as the Director of the Latino Cultural Center in 2016 after four years serving as a professor of Latin American literature. Her commitment to student advocacy and supporting Latinx faculty and staff is evident in her work. Carina is responsible for the expansion, renovation, and relocation of the LCC and her vision ensured that the new space was intentionally inclusive and representative of diverse Latinx communities. Olaru has established a local and statewide presence for the Latino Cultural Center working closely with Greater Lafayette Immigrant Allies, Indiana Latino Expo, Latino Center for Wellness and Education and the Indiana Latino Institute. Carina has received numerous awards including the Indiana Latino Expo 2019 Educator of the Year award.


aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Dolly M. Serrant is a Latina born and raised in San Juan, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Puerto Rico. She is currently serving as the Hispanic Business aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Council Director and BOI Business Coach. Part of her aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa responsibilities is providing overall strategic vision and operational implementation for the maintenance and the expansion of programs to support Hispanic businesses in Central Indiana. Previously, she worked as the Director for the Indiana Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs and has an advertising and public relations background. Her academic preparation includes a bachelor's degree in Commercial Advertising and two master's degrees; one in Communications, specializing in Public Relations; the other in Business Administration focused on International Business and Strategic Leadership from the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Navarra, Spain. Dolly also has multiple Continuing Education Units (CEUs), including a thesis and international investigation project. Her international commitment and passion for helping others got her involved with some of Puerto Rico's non-profit associations to benefit women and children. Dolly participates with many organizations and is also a Salsa instructor at Latin Expressions.

Eli Lilly & Company Coming from Brazil, and since stepping foot in the US, and prior to his current role at Eli Lilly & Company as a Global Marketer, Maycdon Sprowl has had the opportunity to wear multiple professional hats, including Business Owner at Sprowl & opportunity Smith Coaching and Instructor/Coach at The Excel Center. Additionally, from a philanthropic lenses, he has had the privilege to serve at Starfish Initiative, Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis, and Mary Rigg Community Center, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. Curiosity and continuous learning seem to be a daily constant in his life. Through this consistency, Maycdon is a proud Wabash College and IUPUI School of Philanthropy graduate. In his spare time, you can find him alongside his beautiful wife (Christina) seeking God’s righteousness and kingdom, hosting friends and family, creating wealth, and traveling the world.


aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Claudius Tapia is a Consultant Chemist at Eli Lilly & aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Company; he is responsible for building platforms and detection aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa mechanisms to support development of large molecule drugs (antibodies and therapeutic proteins). He is a rising LatinX leader in the company, recognized for innovation, scientific excellence, and data-based match making. In 2018 Claudius received top 100 innovator in Lilly Research Labs, and in 2020 he and his team were nominated for the top diversity award for their work on the first data-based mentoring program across the Medicines Innovation Hub at Lilly. Before joining Lilly, Claudius gained ten years of experience working in academic institutions (The Scripps Research Institute, University of Central Florida, and University of Miami) as well as the pharmaceutical industry (Covance and Biotest Pharmaceuticals). Claudius earned a Bachelor Angeles and Master of Science from Florida Atlantic University. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California from immigrant parents: father from Santiago, Chile and mother from Jalisco, Mexico, Claudius has called Indiana home for the last 7 years. He currently lives in Carmel with his lovely wife, Rebecca, and three boys.

The 2021 cohort's monthly sessions were mostly held virtually, but the participants were able to visit the Indianapolis Airport and the ILI office during the summer. The first year in the Latino Leadership Circle in based on providing a landscape analysis on the different styles of leadership across the various business sectors; providing training on skills such as public speaking, personal branding, and networking; and preparing the participants for the second year of the Circle and post-program success through mentorship and board etiquette trainings.
