Byron Bay, March 30: Australia’s eastern coast went through yet another round of devastating flash flooding on Wednesday. The famous coastal retreat of Byron Bay in New South Wales state is underwater after two days of torrential rain, forcing shop owners to close their businesses Wednesday. In the northeastern part of the state, flood waters are once again pouring through the streets of the town of Lismore after receiving some 400 millimeters of rain over a 24-hour period, causing a breach of the town’s levees. Lismore was among the dozens of communities in New South Wales and the neighboring state of Queensland that sustained massive damage after heavy rains and

Lucknow, March 29 (IANS) The distribution of portfolios and some other steps taken by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the last two days have given enough indication that the second term of the BJP government is going to be Yogi way on the highway. The chief minister’s distribution of portfolios has a clear picture of his priorities, without succumbing to political compulsions. “The portfolio distribution also has a message that Yogi Adityanath will run the government in his own way and will not work under

any pressure,” said a senior BJP functionary. Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, for instance, has been deprived of his favourite PWD portfolio and given rural development and food processing along with national integration. Maurya’s loss has been Jitin Prasada’s gain. Jitin has kept a low profile ever since he joined the BJP last year and it is this that has won him Yogi’s approval. subsequent flooding that began in late February and lasted for several days, killing 22 people. The floods left city streets and homes submerged under several centimeters of water, forcing emergency crews to rescue residents trapped in their homes, with many having desperately climbed onto rooftops waiting for help. Australia’s east coast summer has been dominated by the La Nina climate pattern, which is typically associated with greater rainfall. During a trip to Lismore to inspect the damage from last month’s floods, Prime Minister Scott Morrison acknowledged that the climate-related disasters are making Australia a more difficult place to live.

New Delhi, March 29: The domestic retail selling prices of petrol and diesel were increased for the seventh time in eight days on Tuesday. Consequently, in the past eight days, petrol and diesel prices have increased by Rs 4.80 per litre in the national capital. These prices were revised for the very first time on Tuesday, March 22, after a gap of more than four months. On Tuesday, the price of petrol and diesel in New Delhi were increased again by 80 paise and 70 per litre. As per pump prices, petrol now costs Rs 100.21 per litre and diesel Rs 91.47 per litre in the national capital. On Monday, petrol prices were

increased to Rs 99.41 per litre and diesel Rs 90.77 per litre in Delhi. In the financial capital Mumbai, prices were hiked to Rs 115.04 per litre for petrol and diesel to Rs 99.25 per litre. Besides, the prices of both the transport fuels were raised in Kolkata. The petrol prices rose to Rs 109.68 and diesel to Rs 94.62 per litre. In Chennai too, they were increased. Petrol there now costs Rs 105.94 and diesel Rs 96 per litre. Till last Tuesday, fuel prices were steady since November 2021 when the Centre reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per litre, respectively. The OMCs revise the transportation fuel cost based on various factors such as rupee to US dollar exchange rate, cost of crude oil and demand of fuel amongst others. Resultantly, the final price includes excise duty, value added tax and dealer’s commission. It was widely expected that the OMCs will revise the current prices due to high crude oil cost. Lately, crude oil prices have been volatile on fears of tight supplies due to sanctions against Russia. The crude oil price range is a cause of concern for India as it may ultimately add Rs 10-15 in petrol and diesel selling prices. At present, India imports nearly 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements.

Kiev, March 30 (IANS) Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said that the Ukraine’s indirect losses from the conflict with Russia are estimated at more than $1 trillion, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported. “The losses, calculated indirectly, taking into account the losses in the coming years, amount to more than a trillion dollars,” Shmyhal was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. The cost of direct damage to Ukraine’s public buildings, bridges, roads, civilian and military infrastructure caused by the attacks is estimated at about 270 billion dollars, he said. He projected that Ukraine’s gross domestic product (GDP) will shrink by 35 per cent this year due to the conflict. Ukraine’s GDP was up 3.4 per cent in 2021 after a 3.8-per cent decline in 2020.

with one interviewer asking: “with this Budget, are you addressing the cost of living or is it just the cost of winning?” Opinion polls show the opposition Labor Party ahead by anywhere from 4 to 16 points, while bookmakers on Wednesday announced odds had just widened sharply against Morrison returning to power.

Canberra, March 29: As the Treasurer delivered the Federal Budget today, Liberal National government sought to sell A$8.6 billion of budget giveaways as necessary to meet a cost of living emergency.

The government’s careful messaging campaign was also blindsided by claims from one of Morrison’s own Liberal senators that he was a “bully” with “no moral compass”. The economy has recovered faster than anyone expected last year, with unemployment hitting 13-year lows of 4% and projected to soon reach levels last seen in the 1970s at 3.75%.

Prime Minster Scott Morrison, facing a tough election in May, led the marketing blitz with a barrage of media interviews saying relief was needed to meet rising fuel prices.

Wage growth was also forecast to accelerate but not by enough to outpace inflation, meaning real incomes were set the shrink this year.

“It’s responsible because it’s targeted and it’s for a temporary period as these cost of living impacts are real and they’re there right now,” Morrison told one radio interviewer.

The strong labour market combined with sky-high prices from many of Australia’s resource exports has been a huge boon for tax receipts and allowed the government to project much smaller deficits than predicted just a few months ago.

Other countries including New Zealand, Japan and South Korea have announced measures to counter soaring energy prices in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Some were sceptical, however,

Yet the budget is still seen in the red to the tune of $79.8 billion for the year to end June, with another $78.0 billion pencilled in for 2022/23.

San Francisco, March 29: Subramanian would replace Frederick W. Smith, chairman and CEO, who will step down on June 1. “As we continue to transform as a company and reimagine what’s next, we will keep our people-service-profit philosophy at our core,” said Subramaniam. Smith will become Executive Chairman, the company announced late on Monday. “As we look toward what’s next, I have a great sense of satisfaction that a leader of the caliber of Raj Subramaniam will take FedEx into a very successful future. “In my role as Executive Chairman, I look forward to focusing on Board governance as well as issues of global importance, including Continued on page 3
