Homage paid to Mahatma Gandhi: 1000 lights for peace

Community members pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi with the candle lighting ceremony hosted by the Mahatma Gandhi Library of Houston at the Miller Outdoor Theater on Oct. 14. At left, Atul B. Kothari, founder of the Mahatma Gandhi Library. By SESHADRI KUMAR Let the lighting of lamps for peace be not an empty gesture, but light the lamp in your heart with courage and the oil of love, said Dr. Sita Kapadia, a Gandhian, at the “1000 lights for peace” event celebrating Gandhi Jayanthi at Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park, Houston on Sunday. Dr. Kapadia, emeritus

professor at the City University of New York, who had met Mahatma Gandhi when she was 9 years old, was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Gandhi Week, hosted annually by Mahatma Gandhi Library, Houston. “We can’t merely live in the past or in the memory of Gandhi’s sacrifice and courage,” Kapadia said. She

recalled “the seven sins” as described by Gandhi: Wealth without work; Pleasure without conscience; Knowledge without character; Commerce without morality; Science without humanity; Religion without sacrifice and Politics without principle. Gandhi knew that there won’t be peace in the world all the time and proposed

a solution, namely start with children. That is what Mahatma Gandhi Library has been doing as the children who participated in Gandhi speech contest demonstrated earlier, Kapadia said. “These children do make us proud; they give us hope,” she said and urged the community to help Mahatma Gandhi Library in its movement of

lighting the lamps of peace. Austin Parkway Elementary School student Khushi Kawedia of Sugar Land, who won the first place in the speech contest for children 10 and below, spoke on “Honesty is the best policy,” while Anusha Satya of Seven Lakes High School, Katy, first place winner in the speech contest for 11 and See GANDHI, Page 6

Hindu youth make a mark at the World Hindu Congress

By PARTH PARIHAR The Hindu Youth Conference, held as part of the World Hindu Congress 2018 in Chicago, was attended by nearly 300 young Hindus from across five different continents With the theme “Rise, Organize, Lead, Emerge,” the conference focused on the pivotal role the up-and-coming generation of Hindus can play in the fields of media, politics, activism and entrepreneurship where Hindus are traditionally underrepresented. One of the important issues that was explored was, “Strengthening Hindu Identi-

ty.” As speaker Murali Magesan of New Zealand put it, “We see the vast achievements of Hindu society and would expect that people would identify as Hindu very proudly. But, it’s not happening… so we must ask, ‘why?” As the conference would elaborate, “not knowing” how to represent Hindu dharma has led to voices outside the community speaking for our traditions and in the process misrepresenting them at times. The goal before the current generation of young Hindus is to build a positive, modern vision of Hindu identity and

present this vision confidently in all walks of life. The conference took this mission as a motivating call to action and developed several key projects that would address this goal. Speakers emphasized individual action as a requisite for the change envisaged by the Congress. As National Hindu Students Forum President Drishti Mae of the UK noted, “If not you, then who?” While the first session of the Hindu Youth Conference stated this central challenge and presented the personal journeys of three young Hindu leaders in tackling it, other ses-

sions explored the unique contributions Hindu dharma can make to several fields and the need for Hindus to speak out in these sectors. The final session was a workshop to build structured plans to pursue the opportunities afforded by each specialized area. Attendees heard from Gopal Patel of the Bhumi Project, an environmental activist, who explained his method of working with other communities in international bodies like the United Nations in communicating the inherent earth-caring ethic present in Hindu dharma.

Nihar Sashittal, a community activist in the California textbook case, spoke about strategies to force change in the public space. A presentation by Nikki Avalokitesvari of Bali underlined the relevance of Hindu knowledge in the modern context citing Chanakya’s theories in global defense. A project workshopped from this session was a Global Mentorship Program that will help young Hindu women achieve their goals in various walks of life by giving them access to accomplished female mentors in those fields. POINT OF VIEW

HAF clarifies its stand on “Ganesha ad” To the Editor: This letter is in regards to the Lord Ganesha ad printed in this newspaper back on Sept. 12, the Hindu American Foundation’s statement responding to the ad, and the articles and letters printed in this newspaper regarding the HAF response on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, respectively. It is not intended to criticize India Herald or any of the letter writers; instead, it is intended to inform our community about HAF’s response and the underlying issue of bullying of Hindu students that motivated our decision to do so.

Those who have gotten their coverage of the controversy from India Herald did not get the benefit of reading our full statement, as it was not printed in the paper while the Fort Bend County Republican Party’s apology was. It was clearly stated that we appreciated the Fort Bend County Republican Party’s good faith attempt to reach out to the Hindu American community. What was problematic, and offended many people, was the party’s statement at the bottom of the ad. Furthermore, though it was not clear in India Herald’s article, HAF did accept the Fort

Bend GOP’s apology. Our full statement can be read on our website, www.HAFsite. org. It was also alleged that HAF was responding to the ad on a partisan basis. HAF is politically agnostic and non-partisan, meaning we are informed, but do not favor or endorse any one political party or its positions. Our positions are based on a relentless pursuit of facts, deep consideration of Hindu principles and American values, and the input of subject matter experts. Many do not realize that we have Democrats,

Republicans, and independents as part of our national team. All are committed to advancing the Hindu community’s interests over our own personal political preferences. Whenever an issue like this occurs, we challenge ourselves to make sure our own personal political preferences are not clouding our judgment. Not incidentally, Democrats have committed almost the exact same offense using their symbol, the donkey. Certain Democratic activists used to appeal to Christians that “Jesus rode a donkey, so you should vote Democratic.” That did not go over well either. The specific offense here is compounded by the implication that Hindus worship animals as deities. For those of us that grew up here and attended public schools as Hindus, that was a common misperception that was used to taunt and bully us in school. I clearly remember being asked questions such as, “Hey, you believe in a monkey god, right; So if I eat beef, did I just eat your god; Do you pray to the animals when you go to the circus?” This is not an isolated phenomenon. Our survey of Hindu students conducted two years ago noted that 1 in 3 faced bul-

lying in school. (https://www. hafsite.org/resources/classroomsubjected) The idea that Hindus worship animals as actual deities is something that has been commonly taught in schools by teachers. Having a local political party unintentionally reinforce that message is something that cannot be overlooked. I cannot tell you how many people of my generation have come up to me here locally in the past month and have said, ‘Thank you for standing up for our beliefs. What that ad did was offensive and rude, and it reminded me of what we dealt with back in school.’ I would like those of the immigrant generation who have looked at the ad and thought it no big deal to talk to those of us who grew up here and listen to our experiences. My father initially had the same reaction, and only after he heard from me about my experience did he understand the implications of the ad. It is those experiences that drove us on the HAF team to get involved with HAF in the first place, and I hope by hearing that, you will support us as well. To the Editor: I read about the HAF taking offense to the Republican ad. Your writing was another piece of good coverage that gave a just view from the gallery as they say. As an onlooker (on-reader?), both sides seemed to have a point. The ad took a cheap political shot to make a point. The donkey or elephant part (undoubtedly in poor taste) was the one that spoiled a good idea. If, that last sentence was ‘ would you VOTE for a donkey or an elephant’, instead of WORSHIP, it would’ve been a good case of tonguein-cheek humor. The ‘worship’ part spoiled a good idea. Still it was a good, positive exposure for Hinduism. HAF’s ‘up in arms’ reaction was going overboard. Like Mr. Vincent Bruno wrote, it was ‘a politically biased reaction’. Towards the end of Mr. Vincen’t article, his language got strong enough to remind me of Judge Kavanaugh’s outburst against ‘Democrats taking revenge on behalf of Clinton’. He was making a political capital of HAF’s reaction, as unfair as HAF was in painting everyone involved in an ‘offensive’ light. It - Mr. Vincent’s letter - sounded like he got an opportunity to bash Democrats via their democratic bias, not just HAF. Mr. Vincent is obviously a Republican as he speaks on their behalf. He says ‘the implication was that we were anti-brown racists’. Is that we as in Whites or we as in Republicans? Also his name & byline (associated with HindusforTrump and justiceforHindu) made me wonder if he is a converted Hindu or doesn’t have to be a Hindu to belong to these organizations or neither. There is no disputing the fact that HAF leans heavily Democratic. Yes, it would help every Hindu’s cause if the HAF is really as nonpartisan as it claims to be. In the end, it seems, the HAF left a bad taste behind just like the last line in the Republican ad. And neither the HAF nor the Republicans should be offended by each other’s bad taste. Hindus in America, though, might remind the HAF that its ‘political slip’ is showing. D.V. Gokhale Los Angeles, CA

COMMUNITY Record attendance at Vedanta Society’s Durga Puja By SANCHALI BASU The weather was just picture perfect to usher in Maa Durga during the Vedanta Society of Greater Houston’s Durga Puja on October 13. This was the first Durga Puja for the resident Swami Atmarupananda. Recovering from a recent hip replacement surgery, he could not assist with conducting the puja, but presided in organizing the event, ensuring all aspects of the program were well taken care of. Nabapatrika and the idol of Mother Durga were carried to the nicely decorated pandal outdoors to the auspicious beat of the Dhak and the blowing of the shankh early in the morning, creating a divine atmosphere. Mother Durga and kalabau were decorated in festive splendor and Mother was ready to welcome and bless all her devotees. As is the norm every year, VSGH was honored to have Swami Kripamayananda, head of the Toronto Vedanta Society conduct the puja, his 7th year in a row. Dr. Amrit Achari, assisted with the Chandipath, and

Buddhadeb who traveled from Toronto with Swami Kripamayanada assisted in conducting the puja. The puja commenced on time at 9:30 AM with great austerity and devotion. The melodious devotional songs sung by the VSGH choir made the environment reverberate with divinity. The puja ended with the beautiful arati performed by the Swami with the chandelier lamp, and pushpanjali, the offering of flowers, by devotees. Mother Durga seemed to have control over Mother Nature too, as the weather remained very pleasant throughout the day for the devotees. A record crowd of approximately 700 people attended the VSGH Durga Puja this year. Devotees were all enjoying the spiritual ambience. Fruit & lunch prasad were served in the adjacent tent to all attendees. What was very inspiring to note was the increase in the number of devotees this year compared to last year probably signifying the increased

popularity of VSGH and more interest in seeking Maa Durga’s blessings. Dignitaries in attendance were the Consul General of India Dr. Anupam Ray, Pandit Suman Ghosh, and author, poet Chitra Divakaruni. They all commented that this is one event throughout the year that

they would never miss. Swami Kripamayananda always comments, “This is the best Durga Puja held in the west,” and it gives him immense pleasure and fulfillment in conducting the Durga Puja in Houston. VSGH will celebrate Kali Puja at 7:30 p.m. on

Novemver 6, 2018. Worship will be performed by Swami Nirakarananda of the Vedanta Society of St. Louis. All are invited. Please visit www. houstonvedanta.org for information on all VSGH activities.

COMMUNITY session was kicked o by ViYouth nay Singhal, founder and CEO From Page 3 Delegates also heard from young entrepreneurs on the role Hindu dharma played in shaping their business strategies and vision for the economy. Aditya Mishra of ZenPrivex spoke about blockchain as both a popular business model and an organizing principle that has many dharmic qualities, while Shobhit Mathur of Vision India Foundation presented his vision for a Hindu economy. Nisha Holla of Biomoneta Research spoke about how the innovation that pervades Hindu culture, such as in Panini’s grammar, can be translated to entrepreneurship. They underlined the growing need for more young Hindus to be job creators in order to support the economic needs of the global community while staying true to the tenets of Hindu dharma. The organizing team has put into place the Young Hindu Business Network, a forum that brings young Hindu entrepreneurs together to network and share business know-how. Since the focus of the Hindu Youth Conference was on reowning the narrative of Hindu identity, an entire session was devoted to discussing media platforms, the very places where these narratives are created and disseminated. The

of WittyFeed, one of the fastest growing Internet media and viral content companies in the world. Filmmaker Aditya Patwardhan spoke about how dharmic ideas—like classical music and cosmology—appeal to Western audiences and form the motifs of his ďŹ lms. Karolina Goswami shared examples of how she has personally factchecked and corrected the record on what Hindu dharma stands for through her YouTube channel India in Details. A panel discussion took the question of Hindu identity into the arena of politics and Hindu human rights. While Mayuri Parmar of Conservative Friends of India in the UK and Himanshu Gulati, a Norwegian MP, aďŹƒrmed the need to stand for your values as a Hindu in public life and to champion those values in service of the broader society, Devika Sital of Global Human Rights Defense addressed the need to publicly address the abuse of the human rights of Hindus in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Sital will head the Hindu Human Rights Taskforce, a dedicated team of volunteers that aims to leverage youth power in social media to publicize the plight of localized Hindu communities and seek justice for them. Mayuri Par-

mar led a workshop on how young Hindus can better engage at the level of local politics. She also plans to run a Global Mentorship Program for those interested in careers in public service that will allow these young Hindus to shadow politicians and learn the skills needed for the job ďŹ rsthand. Two Houstonians Karuna Kankani and Ayush Sharma shared their thoughts on the conference: Karuna found it “inspirational to be in an environment where people who are working with dierent organizations on dierent honorable causes united globally. Ayush echoed these sentiments and said “WHC was such a unique and unforgettable experience. Hearing the stories of Hindus from all over the world boosted my own resolve for the Hindu cause.â€? The youth delegates that came to Chicago left inspired, and ready to tackle the mission thrown up by the Hindu Youth Conference. The positive mood and active engagement of the young delegates is indeed strong evidence of a vibrant future for Hindu society worldwide. (The article is written by Parth Parihar, national president of Hindu Students Council and a graduate student at Princeton University. He was the co-coordinator of the Hindu Youth Conference.)

RELIGION

Nine pathways of devotion explained in Hindu philosophy

Golu is the festive display of dolls and figurines popular in South India during the Navaratri (Dussehra, Dasara) festival. These displays are typically thematic, narrating a legend from a Hindu text or a secular cultural issue. The Navaratri golu has become a popular annual community event in the Houston area. Sugar Land residents Roopa and Balakrishnan decked their entire home with traditional dolls. The theme of the main exhibit was “Navavidha Bhakti,” or nine types of devotion. Srimad Baaghavadham describes these different ways of worship as Navavidha Bhakti. As the name implies, there are nine ways of worshipping as depicted in the exhibits above: Repeated hearing of the deeds of god known as SRAVANAM, (Ramanuja); doing japam or singing in praise of the god is known as KEERTHANAM, (Meerabhai); performing pooja is called ARCHANAM, (Gajendra Moksham); dwelling in the god’s Leela is called

SMARANAM, (Prahallad); serving on the feet of the lord is known as PAADA SEVANAM, (Goddess Lakshmi and Sri Vishnu); prostrating before him is known as VANDANAM, (Sri Rama worshipping Lord Siva); serving him without

ego is known as DAASYAM, (Hanuman); gaining his friendship called SAKHYAM, (Arujuna); surrendering to him is known as AATHMA NIVEDANAM (Mahabali). These forms of expressions of Bhakti ultimately enable

humans beings to achieve MUKHTI or salvation, the culmination of human evolution as per Hindu philosophy. —Photo by NAVIN MEDIWALA

India House-SOS hold “Life After” seminar: Demystifying Estate Planning

After arriving in the US, many of us are so focused on getting a graduate education and building a career that we often lose sight of what comes after retirement and life after the loss of a spouse. To address these concerns, SOS (Share Our Secrets) Outreach, in a strategic partnership with India House, collaborated to present a series of seminars under the theme, “Life After”. Behind the scenes, the SOS Outreach Team consisted of Mani Subramanian and Atma Ram with Amit Patil as the volunteer coordinator. Two seminars were presented on how to handle the emotional, physical and financial impacts after the loss of a spouse. During these previous

seminars, attendees identified Estate Planning as a topic that vexed the seniors. Acting upon this suggestion, the third “Life After” seminar was presented on Sunday, October 7 afternoon at India House. The seminar covered estate planning, wills, trusts, and probate. Eager to learn about such complex financial instruments, seniors attended in record numbers (over 300) to hear presentations on the subject of estate planning and probate from two expert lawyers, followed by a talk on the challenges of retirement and the legacy aspects of selling properties outside the US, particularly in India. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A session.

India House Executive Director Col. (retired) Vipin Kumar outlined the extensive range of community services available at India House from charity clinics to yoga classes, after-school care and free food distribution to needy families. Insurance Executive A.J. John, Principal, Wheatstone, served as the emcee for the seminar. John thanked India House and introduced the speakers. The first expert speaker was Russell Hall, principal partner of Russell W. Hall & Associates PC, from Bellaire, Texas. Hall presented a checklist of “what estate planning should look like from your perspective.” “Estate planning is not a form,” Hall explained. “I look

at my assets, fiduciaries, etc. every year and update the information as needed. It is also important to discuss these matters with your children. Know your capabilities and listen to your CPA and financial planner. Make a will and ensure you and your family can find it. Medical directives and medical power of attorney are also important before disability occurs.” He further added that when his wife “opens up the safe deposit box after me, she will find a balance sheet, a cash flow statement, and all of my passwords.” The second expert was Stephen Mendel, principal of The Mendel Law Firm LP, based in West Houston. Mendel discussed probate planning. “Are you going to be a champ or chump?” asked Mendel and added, “Champs plan. For the chumps of the world, the state of Texas has a probate plan, but you won’t like it.” “A quality estate plan is easy to probate,” Mendel continued. “The court needs the original will with an application to designate the heirs, followed by a hearing, to admit the will for probate and appoint the executor. We then work with the executor to pay off the listed liabilities, including taxes, and distribute net assets according

to your will. It’s your responsibility to do it right and take care of your family now and beyond.” SOS Founder Biki Mohindra discussed the major challenges faced by retirees and described the topics for future seminars. He discussed the intricacies of the sale of an asset in India and the legal requirements due to the reciprocal tax treaty between India and the U.S. He also elaborated on how this can be leveraged to get a tax refund in the U.S. when selling inherited real estate property in India. The expert presentations were followed by a Q&A session that was handled by JayKay Wealth Advisors’ Anasuya Kabad. Anasuya did an admirable job of organizing the many questions from the audience succinctly for the three panelists. The seminar concluded with small group huddle sessions with the panelist and A. J. John that allowed the attendees to ask specific questions. For further information, please contact SOS at sosoutreachteam@gmail.com. rid of staffi ngAssociaproblems and spend more April 6, 2017Get – AUSTIN, TX –your The Hindu Students tion (HSA) would like to regretfully announce that Numbers it will be Good = Good Decisions cancelling its annual Gateway Retreat for the 2017 year. HSA prides itself in building a strong network of young Hindu Americans, and it looks forward to organizing other events in the future that will link students from its various branches. HSA has been reorienting itself in recent months to doing more grassroots work. “We have been focusing more on accomplishing work on the local and branch level,” said Mrinalini Vijalapuram, National President of the Hindu Students Association. “We have been doing this through many different activities including interfaith events with other religious organizations, building community partnerships, and expanding into other campuses that don’t already have HSA branches.” While the cancellation of Gateway may come as a disappointment for many prospective attendees, HSA hopes to get feedback from students on other projects and events that interest its branch members. Currently, several projects, including developing HSA’s podcast series and releasing monthly articles that highlight the accomplishments of members from the various campuses have been the focus of the organization’s efforts. HSA welcomes student and community members to get involved in these activities to help further the goals of the organization. “It is important that we meet the needs of the campuses and communities we serve,” reiterated Ms. Vijalapuram. “We want to make sure that we are putting our attention on projects that will truly benefit them.” -***-

MUSINGS by Gady

Birds of “Leftistâ€? feathers... talism’s main short-coming – a failed free enterprise. He suggested use of ďŹ scal & monetary policies to oset the adverse eects of economic recessions & depressions. It was essentially an idea combining the virtues of capitalism & Marx’s state-owned economy. Democratic capitalism still exists in America & other Western countries but with some state controls to make sure free enterprise is not a free (of responsibility) ride, never mind that irresponsibility, like, greed is human. History shows repeatedly that greed & irresponsibility are equal opportunity poisons to all humans, with or without isms. Still FDR’s New Deal (1933-36) essentially gave a ďŹ nancial push to a depressionladen economy. Though New Dealers never accepted the Keynesian argument for government spending as a tool for recovery, FDR’s actions spoke louder than any words, getting America out of the Great Depression (1930s). Keynes’ book came out towards the end of FDR’s New Deal but the depression had already triggered the philosophy & logic behind the idea in the Western economic circles. Sixty-some years later, with similar measures (stimulus package), Obama’s got us out of the Great Recession of 2007/8. There are no anti-dotes or checks & balances - like under democracy/capitalism - to communism’s (camouaged as socialism) dictatorship where elections are turned into a farce after socialists capture power. When Soviet Union & its satellite states in Eastern Europe failed (1989), communists knew they couldn’t talk about the Communist utopia. So, they turned to anti-fascism

Sometime in the 19th or 20th century, someone, no one knows who, said, “If you’re not a socialist by 20, you don’t have a heart and, if you’re not a conservative by 40, you don’t have a head.â€? Most of us have dreams & aspirations in our twenties & thirties. Most of us have exposure to religious & moral values. Dreams combined with moral values can lead to idealism - to want to change the world, abolish poverty, bring equality of justice & income, while also making a living. The idealism makes socialism sound noble. Most of us can’t understand older generation’s cynicism about promises, politicians & patriotism. Then we become informed via books, newspapers, radio, TV & now the social media. They all scream at us about communism’s failures in Russia & entire Eastern Europe. You read George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945), a parody on socialism, the ďŹ rst such book I read. It begins with ‘All animals are equal’ and ends with ‘Some animals are more equal than others’. I may be way past forty but not a conservative yet. Reading Animal Farm, in my late 20s, my head & heart caught up with each other. Since then, they’ve been neck & neck. Socialism is an idea that has never been supported by facts. Its ground reality (history) is ugly. But before & even after George Orwell’s Animal Farm, socialists all over the world were pointing ďŹ ngers at the Great Depression (1930s) as a ‘we-warned you’ sneer about capitalism’s failure. Then British economist John Maynard Keynes came up with his book The General Theory of employment, Interest and Money (1936), detailing his anti-dote to capi-

as their tool to seize power. You can’t go wrong with Hitler as the great Satan. Worse than being against God, & religion, they’re against the freedoms under a democracy. Romance with socialism ignores history. Both capitalism & socialism by themselves are awed. It is by combining their basic virtues – the freedoms of a democracy under capitalism & some (only some) state controls from socialism – that make for the best option for now. In any case, leftists shouldn’t have the gall to disrupt private gatherings in the name of antifa(scism). What went on & still goes on under communism is no worse than fascism. Socialists lack credentials to cry foul (fascism)! The millennial generation seems wet enough behind ears to realize that they’re fascinated by a trojan horse. Inside the horse is fascism. Just after the 10th anniversary of the fall of Lehman Brothers, co-founder of Home Depot, Ken Langone cited the market crash that followed (2007) as the reason many millennials have a negative view of capitalism. “They were 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 years old,â€? Langone told Yahoo Finance’s Julia La Roche at the All Markets Summit (Sept. 20). “So, capitalism did not present itself very well.â€? Langone went on to suggest that countries that have adopted a socialist system aren’t doing well. To the millennials who seem to favor socialism, Langone said: “I’ll put you in my plane and I’ll y you down to Venezuela, and let’s see how good socialism is doing down there.â€? He could have been talking about Cuba or Russia or even a seemingly prosperous - only because of dictatorship - China. The Chinese government’s policies don’t have to go thru a parliament or a senate. The big bank I worked for in India had two unions & we were required to join one of them. Overwhelming majority joined the communist union. I could never join anything com-

munist. So, I had to join the other, the Jan Sangh (precursor to BJP) union though I disagreed with their Hindu Rashtra philosophy. Their meetings were small & dull. The communist (union) leaders believed in being loud & aggressive. They still do. Failure of Soviet Union hasn’t stopped them. All this goes through my mind when socialist groups invade a Hindu (yes, only Hindu, not Muslim, not Christian) or BJP gathering anywhere they can. They defy honesty, decency & facts. They have a new misnomer for Hinduism. Hindutva. The secular media is gleefully ‘just doing their job’. The recent ‘indecent exposure’ by socialists’ anti-Hindu/Hinduism group at the World Hindu Congress (WHC) in Chicago – in the name of minorities & supposedly against fascism got favorable coverage in the Indian-American weekly India Abroad. India West, another IndianAmerican weekly just did its job & reported the protests & the WHC proceedings. The ‘allegations’ (read lies) made by the protestors about violence against them (never mind that the protesters gained entry illegally using two women as their ‘decency’-shield) were not veriďŹ ed by those two weeklies. I’ve referred to my previous Musings before but have never mentioned any India Herald coverage of events in India or America. But frankly, had I not read World Hindu Congress’ coverage by India Herald - Left’s much ado about what’s wrong with the Right (Sept.12) & Protestors against Hindu groups test limits of ‘free speech, Sept. 19) - I’d have concluded that the WHC organizers had some right-wing elements resorting to violence against the ‘non-violent’ protestors. These socialist protestors’ not-so-hidden agenda about India is to disrupt any gathering of BJP. Every political party believes that all is fair in love & war, but the media should not be absolved of reporting the third side, when

one or both sides are lying. India Herald’s investigative coverage included the third side. India’s Congress party & secular media gave secularism a bad name just as the liberal media in America has given liberalism a bad name. ‘Violent’ protests (gaining entry illegally & then disrupting a peaceful gathering) like the two women & their cohorts did at the World Hindu Congress was not secularism. The Western media has been reporting about India-Pakistan wars - with ‘both sides accuse each other, both sides this’ - in the name of fair & balanced reporting without presenting the third side. It’s neither complete nor responsible nor fair to readers because it lacks investigative coverage. The Edward R. Murrows & the Walter Cronkites have been missing for years, not just from America but the whole world. India is just beginning to adopt its true identity, Bharat. It is likely that there may be or have been some Murrow & Cronkite-like journalists in the world who did some quality investigative reporting, like some in India immediately after the 1962 Indo-China War but nobody noticed because India & other underdeveloped countries lacked the media muscles to spread the word. Sadly, these ‘communist’ protestors from some organization/s called the Alliance for Justice & Accountability warned elected American oďŹƒcials of ‘normalizing’ Hindutva by attending the World Hindu Congress. The most glaring (for me) of those who didn’t attend was Democratic Congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaii. Et tu? Et tu? But then, she did endorse leftist candidate Bernie Sanders against Mrs. Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary. She has not turned forty yet, ‘not to have a head’. But then again, Bernie Sanders is way beyond forty. I guess birds of leftist feathers ock together. (Send responses to gadfly7_7@yahoo.com)

On Oct. 4, Pratham USA supporters of all ages gathered to hear Pratham Co-Founder Dr. Madhav Chavan and Pratham Houston Advisory Board Member Dhiren Shethia discuss PraDigi (i.e. Pratham Digital), Pratham’s latest digital learning initiatives in India. PraDigi is an innovative initiative that focuses on facilitating group learning outside the classroom through providing content-filled tablets to groups of children. The tablets focus less on curriculum-based content and are instead used to trigger self-learning behaviors. Children are encouraged to engage in a hybrid learning model where they use the tablets to interact with each other and their environments through games and scavenger hunts, reenacting what they learn, and even generating their own content through creating videos. The model is simple in that one mother in a village is given custodianship of a tablet. She then gives the tablet to the children in her group as appropriate and helps facilitate their learning. These mothers themselves have taken an interest in learning, requesting content like recipes to be added to the tablets. The Pratham Houston event, sponsored by BBVA Compass, was held at the BBVA Compass Plaza in the Galleria area. After a Q&A session with the speakers, the gathering which comprised of Pratham Houston Board Members, donors, young professionals, and members of the University of Houston Pratham group got an opportunity to play with some of the PraDigi tablets provided to the children in India. Pratham’s innovative efforts have not gone unnoticed. On October 4, 2018 in Hong Kong, China, Pratham was officially presented the 2018 LUI Che Woo Prize—a cross-sector innovation prize that recognizes outstanding contributions benefiting humanity. Pratham was unanimously selected in the Positive Energy category focused on the elimination of illiteracy. The LUI Che Woo Prize is a relatively new international award presented to individuals or organizations that have displayed remarkable achievements towards three objectives: (1) sustainable development of the world, (2) betterment of the welfare of mankind, and (3) promotion of a positive life attitude and enhancement of positive energy. PraDigi is just one of the ways Pratham is implementing innovation to enhance the learning atmosphere of India. As one of India’s largest education nonprofits focused on eradicating childhood illiteracy, Pratham is working to make a mark on education. Visit www.prathamusa.org to learn more. — By Peace Cowen

ASIE, Indo-American Chamber hold joint meeting

Swapan Dhairyawan, left, Chaitanya Gampa, Sanjay Ramabhadran, Sudhakar Kalaga, Archana Sharma, Varuna Singh, Showri Nandagiri, and Jagdip Ahluwalia. —Photo by Paresh Shah The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (IACCGH) and American Society of Indian Engineers and Architects (ASIE) hosted their first joint event at India House on October 4, 2018. The event presented three prominent engineering and business leaders: Sudhakar Kalaga, President – KIT Professionals, Inc., Sanjay Ramabhadran, Principal, Versa Infrastructure and METRO Board President and Varuna Singh, Alternate Program Director for TxDOT-Houston for a panel discussion titled “The Intersection of Engineering, Commerce and Business”.

IACCGH’s Executive Director Jagdip Ahluwalia started the proceedings by welcoming the audience to the event. Chamber President Swapan Dhairyawan gave an insight to the collaboration with various Associations during the year after which ASIE’s Secretary and Board Member Chaitanya Gampa offered an update on ASIE activities. Program Chair and Board Member Archana Sharma served as the moderator for the panel discussion, and shared her excitement in presenting this event with the hope that it benefits members from both organizations. She noted that the goal for the event was to

present speakers from different paths of life “public, private and entrepreneurial” to discuss engineering, business and commerce that led to the panel of the day. She introduced each speaker by sharing their childhood dream for a career – a cricketer for Kalaga, a bus driver for Ramabhadran and a lawyer for Singh. The panel discussion started with each panelist offering a synopsis of their “Engineering Journey”. The panelists further discussed personal experiences during their career and shared lessons learnt. When asked how to balance technical growth and business growth, all three agreed that technical

growth is most critical and if achieved, business growth and profits would follow automatically. While discussing engineers’ role in politics, the panelists agreed that engineers have a big influence on policies and must take the initiative to participate and advise the policy makers to have an impact on the society. When asked about what crucial investments needed to be made for Houston’s infrastructure, both Singh and Ramabhadran indicated “public transportation” as the most important need while Kalaga felt “drainage” improvements were critical. When asked to share “one” piece of advice for the audience, Singh and Ram-

abhadran both acknowledged the importance of “communication” while Kalaga urged the audience to work towards becoming an expert and leader in their chosen path of life. Moderator Sharma opened up the panel to the audience which led to discussions on varied topics including engineering ethics and life-work balance. She concluded the panel discussion and thanked the panelists for their insights. The event was attended by over 80 attendees and the dinner was catered by Madras Pavilion.
