Sewa celebrates volunteerism at annual gala

From left to right Guest of honor Mahindra USA CEO Mani Iyer, Sewa coordinator Nikhil Jain, Delores Jones Alief ISD, Kavita Tewary Ex.Director, Deepika Agarwal, Keynote speaker Swapnil Agarwal, Gala Chair Anita Ravat, Gitesh Desai Chapter President and Achalesh Amar, Chapter Coordinator. By SESHADRI KUMAR Sewa International, Houston Chapter, reviewed its service projects and renewed its commitment to serving humanity in distress, aiding local communities and promoting volunteerism at its annual fundraising gala, appropriately called Help 2018, on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Stafford Center. With an attendance of over 600 people, the gala, a sold out event, recognized the major donors of money and time and celebrated the scores of volunteers. Gitesh Desai, President of Sewa’s Houston chapter, in his

welcome speech, spoke about Sewa’s accomplishments in the past year, especially the continuing efforts in disaster relief and rehabilitation in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. He also talked about the various services that Sewa offers to the local community including family services and Aspire tutorials for children dwelling in apartments. The chief guest of the evening, India’s Consul General Dr. Anupam Ray, said “I am a friend of Sewa” and Sewa represents “service” that is the best of India. Swami Vivekananda’s en-

during contribution, which was celebrated at the recent World Hindu Congress in Chicago, was about Seva and that is Hinduism, he said. As a diplomat, Ray referred to a recent remark made by President Donald Trump at the United Nations that after 70 years’ of India’s independence, President Trump held up India as an example of what other countries can aspire to. There is no contradiction in being a good Indian and good American, Ray said. “Serve the people locally. In doing so, you are being a good Indian,” Ray said.

Improving the lives of people is what both Sewa International does and India is doing now. He who does something to alleviate others’ suffering is a true Indian, Ray said. Keynote Speaker, Swapnil Agarwal, CEO of Nitya Capital & Karya Property Management shared his insights on the value of giving back to society. He has been walking the talk that one should participate in volunteering activities (Karma) because it’s the right Dharma to help those in need. In Hindu philosophy, Karma means one has to perform ser-

vice without expecting results and it is not easy to comprehend that principle, Agarwal said. Karma should not be confused with the meaning of “Dharma”, which is not a religious belief, but one’s duty, he said. Karma helps one to perform and complete one’s duty. Dharma defies any description but holds everything together, he added. Agarwal attributed his business philosophy to his upbringing as a Hindu and believed that the purpose of business is much more than making profit and it should be based on a bigSee SEWA, Page 6

COMMUNITY Agarwal described it as a Ekal win-win-win model, namely From Page 1 India’s Consul-general in Houston, Dr. Anupam Ray, succinctly summed up the event at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square on Saturday: “I enjoy going to galas and I enjoy seeing you compete with each other in giving. That is the spirit of the Indian community. You represent the best of both, India and America. You have built another bridge by giving back.” “I enjoy going to galas and I enjoy seeing you compete with each other in giving. That is the spirit of the Indian community. You represent the best of both, India and America. You have built another bridge by giving back.” The senior diplomat also highlighted the profound impact of the Ekal movement on India’s rural population. “Naxalism and terrorism is a problem in India and education can help overcome that problem. Every single child sent to school (by Ekal Vidyalaya) means one soul saved from terrorism,” he said. Dr. Kiran Patel of Florida, renowned cardiologist turned entrepreneur-philanthropist, in his keynote address catapulted Ekal Vidyalaya’s achievement to a star well beyond the Milky Way Galaxy and described it as outstanding and epoch-making as Neil Armstrong’s one small step on the moon or his hitting a golf ball from the surface of the moon. “You have achieved your goal by your united efforts,” though it would have appeared impossible at first, Patel said and cited a tale involving Winston Churchill and Alexander Fleming. The father of Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, saved a young Winston Churchill from drowning, and in gratitude Churchill’s father paid for Fleming’s education. The message here is clear, that education is a precious gift, though the story itself may not be true. “Ekal Vidyalaya is your ticket to the stars,” Patel said of the outcome of Ekal’s efforts, as the organization has established 77,000 schools already and is shooting for 100,000 schools by 2022. “Make the most of your time today and each day hereafter. Let us not rest on our laurels, but aspire to achieve the goal for Ekal,” Patel said. Houston’s emerging millennial entrepreneur Swapnil Agarwal went straight to the heart of the matter and opined that starting a new business needs to be more than making profits and there must be a bigger purpose. His own business philosophy is to help uplift the society and help those people who are deserving.

keeping the customers, employees and investors, all happy. Instead of having the ‘me and myself attitude,’ entrepreneurs should become “the change agents and give back to help those who helped you get there,” Agarwal said. “I truly believe in Ekal and want to give back as it helps in the development of villages and self-reliant villages would make India succeed,” he said. Ekal USA President Suresh Iyer said the movement began in 1989 with one school and today has expanded to 77,000 schools. Notably 20 percent of these schools are now able to stand on their own and do not need Ekal’s money any more, Iyer said. Ekal, with its skill and entrepreneurship programs, has helped stem the migration of labor to urban areas and retain them in villages. Ekal on Wheels, a mobile computer lab travels to villages and provides basic digital literacy to the villagers. In a day, Ekal on Wheels covers three villages, provides 6 hours of digital literacy training and engages 50 youth. Ekal has 25 mobile labs operating now. Digital tables are now being introduced to expand the breadth and depth of learning at Ekal. Going beyond providing basic literacy, Ekal is now implementing integrated village development, Iyer said, which includes women empowerment, farmers’ education, and health awareness. Partnering with other organizations, Ekal is bringing new and innovative products to improve the lives of villagers. Sonal Shah, an economist, entrepreneur and innovator, has worked in government, business and the non-profit sectors. She was the Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of the first White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in the Obama administration. She is the cofounder of an international non-profit, Indicorps, which offers fellowships for the Indian diaspora around the world to work on development projects in India. The Indian American community knows the importance of education and with lots of hard work and luck, the community has succeeded. Now, the community should make it a little bit easier for others to achieve the same success, Shah said. Integrated development of villages, she continued, build a community and by donating to Ekal, you help build a community in Indian villages. “Technology matters. Infrastructure matters. If we want to see change in India, where 68 percent of people live in villages, it is our responsibility to do a little more,” Shah told the audience.

Houston’s Dawoodi Bohra community members showed their support to the Ekal movement in India by attending the gala in large numbers at the Sugar Land Town Square Marriott. Abeezar S. Tyebji, right, Chief Executive Officer, Shipcom, with Atul Kothari of Mahatma Gandhi Library in Houston, fellow community members and Ramesh Bhutada, chairman and CEO of Star Pipe Products in Houston. Playwright fulďŹ lls duty with a play on “dutyâ€? Tamil Stage Creations founded by Anantha Iyer, marked its 41st anniversary with the staging of their latest Tamil drama titled “Kadamaiâ€? (Duty) at the Jewish Community Center on Sept. 29. Established in 1977 to promote Tamil culture in theater, a pioneering mission at that time, the organization, under the direction of Anantha, has staged numerous plays over the years. The latest endeavor was a social family drama with music and dance, the hallmark of Anantha’s productions. Commemorating the occasion, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 29 as “Tamil Stage Creations Dayâ€? in Harris County. Emmett, in his proclamation, noted that Tamil Stage Creations has entertained and educated audiences throughout North America on a variety of contemporary topics and inspired dozens of Tamil language community theater companies across the country. The story of “Kadamaiâ€? revolves around the family of a retired army major who has three daughters. Two other families and friends also play a part. The play deals with the role, responsibility, and “dutyâ€? of a father and mother to their children. The three daughters have their own understanding of “dutyâ€? to their parents. One daughter believes in taking care of the family and her sisters and does not consider marriage for herself. Another daughter feels it is her duty to listen to her parents and marry the one approved by them. The third daughter, independent and strong willed, believes in charting her own course and not be a burden on the family. She loves a person from another caste and gets married to him. Thus the theme of “Kadamaiâ€? is portrayed in dierent forms and the message is conveyed with a simple story line. More than two dozen people acted in the play, in keeping with Anantha’s commitment to introduce as many new artists to theater as possible. Dr. Ram and Padma Anantha, with Jaya Vasudevan, Gomathy and Mala Gopal, played the role of the protagonist family, M.K. Sriram, Dr. Jamuna Ramanathan and Manoj Viswanathan as the friend’s family and the third family comprised Kumaran Sivaparakasam, Meera Srikanth, and Dr. T. Gopal. Before the play opened, S. Kothandaraman and Padma Anantha were honored for their contribution to Tamil Stage Creations and to the community over the last four decades. —SESHADRI KUMAR

Rita Baranwal nominated to top post at Department of Energy

Indian-American Rita Baranwal, director of GAIN (Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear) has been nominated for the post of assistant secretary of energy (nuclear energy) at the Department of Energy, by the Trump administration. The White House stated that if confirmed, Rita will also head the development and management of the department’s nuclear technology infrastructure. What made the Trump administration choose Rita for such a prominent role was her extensive research background. Baranwal earned her BA in Materials Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She also serves on advisory boards for MIT’s materials research laboratory and UC Berkeley’s nuclear engineering

department. The announcement has come at a time when President Trump signed the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act (NEICA) on October 1, 2018. This act will speed up development in the advanced nuclear reactor by removing financial and technological constraints. Baranwal in the past served as the director of Technology Development & Application at Westinghouse. At the same time, she was also the manager in Materials Technology at Bechtel Bettis. She used to supervise the research and development in nuclear fuel material for US naval reactors. Earlier during an official presentation on the country’s nuclear industry, Rita said, US nuclear industry is equipped to lead the world in deployment of innovative nuclear technologies to supply urgently needed abundant clean energy both domestically and globally. Addressing how the reactors could tackle climate change, the unconventional and energetic spirit that created the commercial nuclear energy industry will again transform our country, she said. New, smaller and more efficient reactors are being developed to combat climate change and meet the energy demand.

Newtown High School students visit Vatsalyagram in India for service By MANU SHAH Shradha Sahani, a 2016 graduate from the University of Maryland was looking to spend her summer volunteering before starting her PhD program. She spent weeks researching different organizations around the world but one name jumped out at her -Vatsalya Gram. The institution’s unique concept of creating families by grouping abandoned children with destitute women, providing housing, food supplies and other necessities to live as a unit piqued her interest. Shradha’s cousin Shaanti accompanied her to Vatsalya Gram where the girls spent two weeks in service or sewa. It was “a life changing experience” for both. Vatsalya Gram which means a Village of Maternal Love is a sprawling, 50 acre foundation in Vrindavan, two hours from New Delhi. It was started under the Param Shakti Peeth Trust by Sadhvi Ritambhara when she found an abandoned baby on the front steps of the ashram where she was staying. The Gram houses three schools, a hospital for the poor, a prosthetic center and a dairy and vegetable farm. Several families live on its premises. Each family has 5 children, a mother, an aunt and a grandmother all biologically unrelated. The children receive a mother’s love and care while the women find refuge and a purpose in life. When the Superintendent of Newtown High School, Dr. Eradi learned about Shradha’s experience at Vatsalya Gram and its innovative configuration of families, he was intrigued enough to extend an invitation to Sadhvi Ritambhara or Didi Maa as she is affectionately called, to visit the school. Months later, Reena Sahani, Shradha’s mother picked Didi Maa from the airport and says she was “struck by the love and compassion she radiated.” Didi Maa met school officials who gave her a tour of the school. When Dr. Eradi asked Didi Maa if she would like the school to raise funds for her foundation, her response was characteristically parental. She told him her countrymen could support her institution financially but she wanted her children to have “what the children here have… exposure, aspirations, confidence and opportunities.” The answer made a powerful impression on school authorities and prompted them to work on a possible collaboration. Since this wasn’t a regular student program, four teachers from Newtown High School visited Vatsalya Gram in September 2017 to explore the possibility of a long term association. Highly impressed, they decided to institute a program where Newtown High

The seven children were each assigned a family to stay with. The premises has 3 schools. Samvid is a private English medium CBSE accredited school which was attended by the Vatsalya Gram children, Vishistam – a special needs school and KBRM – a Hindi medium school. The Newtown children attended all three schools, participated in the classes, held discussions, exchanged viewpoints, shared chores, recited mantras, ate vegetarian meals, and bonded like they’d known each other for years. The impact of this 10 day interface in the Vatsalya Gram children was rewarding: the positive reinforcement and interaction sparked ambition, dreams and goals. Children who were initially hesitant began to verbalize their aspirations and voice their opinions. “Success is self-defined” was clearly being imbibed. It was an equally transformative experience for the Newtown children. The visit fostered an appreciation of family, nurturing relationships, compassionate love, willingness to do something for others based on non-expectation, and the recognition that one doesn’t have to be born into a family to create a family. Participants in the Mahatma Gandhi Week – 2018 Speech Contest . Mahatma Gandhi has left lasting impact on the minds of younger generations today, as seen in the amazing speeches presented by children of various ages. On October 6, Mahatma Gandhi Library held its 2018 Speech Contest for the 15th year at the gracious Arya Samaj of Greater Houston. The Speech Contest is held annually to determine the two speakers at the 1000 Lights For Peace program, at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. Under guidance of Dr. Rakesh Agarwal and Mr. Karam Gupta, the coordinators for this year, the speech contest showcased the public speaking talents of the youth. The judges were Mr. Rashid Kapadia, Dr. Huma Jafry, and Colonel Raj Bhalla. The timer for the event was Dr. Alka Agarwal. Children 10 and under described their interpretations of the famous Benjamin Frank-

lin quote “Honesty is the Best Policy,â€? while those 11 and over responded to “If I Met Gandhi Today.â€? The top three winners of each category will be publicly awarded at the 1000 Lights For Peace celebration. The MC of this year, Shreya Chawla, started o the program with a prayer. She represented both the Mahatma Gandhi Library and the Arya Samaj of Greater Houston. The fascinating speeches of the youth included humorous, relatable anecdotes and quotes from honorable leaders of the world. The younger children rotated their speeches around their local areas, such as school, or at home. The older children brought in more controversial topics of the world, ranging from gun violence to women’s rights. The incredible speeches of all age groups entailed the knowledge and awareness, accumulated after the research of these

topics and that which already resides in the ever-growing minds of the future generations. Atul Kothari, founder of Mahatma Gandhi Library, praised the kids and parents for their effort and dedication. He thanked Sanjay Jain from the Arya Samaj Of Greater Houston, the distinguished judges, and the volunteers for their aid and service towards spreading Gandhian values. Kothari then invited all to the grand ďŹ nale ‘1000 Lights for Peace’ – a beautiful, international cultural program organized as part of Gandhi Jayanti week, from 5 p.m onwards on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park Houston. All in attendance were then asked to participate in a Poster Contest for Mahatma Gandhi Week 2018 organized by Mrs. Rita Kothari at the same venue.
