ished third in the May 7 city council elections, has endorsed Harish Jajoo for mayor in the June 11 run-off election.

Hancock received 1,582 votes or 19.17 percent.

Joe Zimmerman received 3,388 votes or 41.06 percent of the total votes cast, and Jajoo received the second most votes with 2,846 or 34.49 percent.

They are in the run-off election.

Other opponents in the race were Kyle Stanley, 230 for 2.79 percent, and Sarwar Khan, 206 for 2.50 percent.

One of the difficult, though mostdesirable, aspects of moving to a foreign country is motivating our kids to learn our native language and remain connected with our culture.

While inspiring students to learn Hindi can be a difficult task, the rewards are more than worth it.

To meet the growing demand of students and to promote the language, India House started Hindi Language and Culture of India Classes in October 2015 at their premises.

The class is taught by the most experienced Hindi and Culture of India instructor Mr. Arun Prakash who started and taught Hindi at Bellaire High School, Rice University and

University of Houston.

All 16 enrolled students were awarded certificates after clearing the final examination.

A simple award ceremony was held at India House on May 15, 2016 to celebrate the achievement of these kids.

BOOK REVIEW Nielsen: Asian-Americans flex consumer influence across regions New report finds that Asian-Americans are expanding their geographic reach to the South and Midwest, exhibiting buying behaviors specific to cultures and influencing mainstream habits Asian-Americans’ impact and influence are shifting and growing, according to Asian-Americans: Culturally Diverse and Expanding Their Footprint, a Nielsen report released today. Members of this diverse segment are starting businesses, creating jobs and contributing to the U.S. economy, with a current $825 billion in consumer buying power—which is expected to rise to $1.1 trillion by 2020. As the fastest-growing U.S. population segment with an expanding geographic footprint in the Midwest and South – beyond traditional immigrant enclaves in the West and Northeast – the Asian-American impact on consumer preferences is rippling across mainstream America, with far-reaching implications for brands and marketers.

As part of Nielsen’s ongoing efforts to provide insights that help marketers better serve Asian-American consumers, the report highlights the different ways in which this particular segment is exerting cultural and economic influence on the U.S. mainstream market today through a regional lens.

“If marketers and companies want to be successful, it is imperative they develop growth strategies that account for Asian-Americans’ diverse ethnicities to better resonate with the cultural nuances of this unique multicultural community,” said Betty Lo, vice president, Community Alliances & Consumer Engagement, Nielsen. “This segment not only has culturally specific tastes and preferences, but also buying behaviors that are unique to geographic regions.

In addition, U.S. Census projections show that AsianAmericans are on track to become the largest immigrant group in the nation by 2055.

As entrepreneurs, tech titans and digital content consumers, Asian-Americans’ cultural identities will play a unique role in impacting the U.S. economy and marketplace.”

Highlights of Asian-Americans: Culturally Diverse and Expanding Their Footprint include: Geographic Expansion • Asian-Americans are diverse, hailing from over 40 countries of origin. The majority of recent Asian immigrants migrated to large cities; 63% live in 15 U.S. cities. The top five destination metro areas for recent Asian immigrants are New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA; Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA; San Francisco-OaklandHayward, CA; Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, D.C.-VA-MD; and San JoseSunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA. • Between 2009 and 2014, immigration, relocations, and new births have led to a population increase of 33% (over 1.1million) in the South and 29% (538,000) in the Midwest.

• The South saw the highest growth in AsianAmerican buying power (43%) between 2010 and 2015 and is projected to continue to see the highest growth in the next five years.

Entrepreneurial Economic Drivers • Of the 87 U.S. startup companies valued at over $1 billion with the potential to become publicly traded on the stock market, 19 were founded by Asian-American immigrants.

• In the U.S. Census’ recently released Survey of Business Owners, the number of Asian-American-owned businesses grew by 24% between 2007 and 2012 and claimed the highest percent sales increase (38%) of any racial or ethnic group.

• Of the 11.6 million Asian-Americans in the workforce, about 70% are employees of for-profit businesses, 12% are government employees, 7% work for nonprofits, and 9% are self-employed, while 1% are unemployed.

Unique Culinary Tastemakers and Environmentally Sustainable Consumers • Seventy-nine percent

of Asian-Americans agree they prefer cooking with fresh food rather than canned or frozen food. On average, AsianAmericans purchase 69% more fresh seafood, 72% purchase more fresh vegetables, and 29% purchase more fresh fruits than the general population. Asian-American shoppers say they are more likely to buy and pay more for recyclable and eco-friendly products than the general population.

• More and more consumers of other races and ethnicities are adopting AsianAmerican cooking styles and habits. Items such as soy milk, seaweed, Asian curries and many others are entering mainstream markets.

Tech Titans and Content Consumers • Nearly half of AsianAmericans watching English TV also watch TV in an Asian language (dual-language viewers).

• Asian-Americans outpace the general population in ownership of all three major Internet personal devices: smartphones, household computers and tablets. Online purchasing sentiment outpaces the general market, as well.

• Asian-Americans take the lead in using multimedia devices, averaging almost twice the minutes per day of the general population; they spend half the time on live TV as the general population.

Additionally, Asian-American households have a much lower rate of DVR usage (43%) than the general population (62%).

Sixty-eight percent of AsianAmerican households have subscription video on demand (SVOD) services, a 21% higher rate than the general population.

NEWS University of Michigan helps India start first consumer sentiment index ANN ARBOR For the first time, India has started measuring consumer sentiment—the degree of confidence consumers express in the economy through their spending.

The monthly consumer sentiment indicator has been launched in India by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy and Bombay Stock Exchange, in association with the Survey Research Center of University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.

“We are very excited to be working with CIME and BSE on this important and unique initiative,” said Beth-Ellen Pennell, director of the Survey Research Center’s International Survey Operations.

“This collaboration will make critical and timely economic data about India publicly available for the very first time.”

Along with the consumer survey, CIME will also assess the unemployment rate in India for both rural and urban areas.

Traditionally, the Indian government estimates the unemployment rate. This is one of the few times when a private company is evaluating it.

“The survey and the employment rate are valuable re-

sources,” said Richard Curtin, director of the U-M Surveys of Consumers.

“It helps estimate the consumers’ reaction to new government policies and also indicate the economic health of the country.”

The unemployment rate for India is computed by interviewing adults of households across India. The employment / unemployment status of over 1,30,000 individuals of 15 years or more in over 39,600 households is ascertained during a 30-day period to make estimates of the workforce and the unemployed.

The unemployment rate is computed from this data every morning. A new unemployment rate is posted at 4 am IST everyday. A short analysis of the results is posted by 10 am IST monday through friday.

The U-M Institute for Social Research was the first group in the world to start conducting the consumer sentiment survey in 1946.

Now, the survey is conducted in more than 70 countries.

Manufacturers, retailers and banks all use consumer assessments to plan their actions— whether to boost production and home construction, or to slow it down.

“In India, the chief beneficiaries of the public good will be the central bank, state governments, businesses, academia and the public who want to get a better grip of macroeconomic status of the Indian economy,” said CIME managing director Mahesh Vyas.

To launch the survey in India, ISR shared its research methodology with CIME, and ISR researchers also spent time in India learning how the process worked.

The partnership between ISR and CIME extends beyond consumer sentiment to include graduate student internships and ISR analysis of the data collection in India—and with good reason. The U.S. household survey is conducted with 500 households, while the Indian survey is conducted with more than 150,000 households three times a year.

Currently, CIME releases the national consumer sentiment index and unemployment numbers monthly. They hope to break it down further to release estimates for each Indian state.

“India is very diverse,” Vyas said. “The sentiments may vary greatly from one state to another.”

HAF expresses solidarity with Indian Parliamentarian and Dalit leaders standing against caste-based discrimination

Leaders of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) were dismayed by the alleged altercation that took place at the Silgur Devta Temple in Uttarakhand, India.

Hindus from the often discriminated Dalit community accompanied Tarun Vijay, a member of India’s upper parliamentary house from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, on the temple visit and were met with violent protests by individuals seeking to prohibit their entry into the temple.

Vijay is reported to have sustained head injuries in the incident.

“We stand with Tarun Vijay and the Dalit community in

support of their act of bravery,” said Swami Venkataraman, who serves on HAF’s National Leadership Council and was the lead author of its report on caste.

“We pray for Vijay’s speedy recovery as well as any others injured. Hindu teachings have no room for discrimination against anyone, and there should be no such impediments for devotees seeking to enter a place of worship. It’s incumbent upon Hindus around the world to counter such archaic and draconian practices.”

Discrimination and oppression against the Dalit community persists widely across all religious communities

throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Despite movements spanning hundreds of years by Hindu leaders to remove stigmas and prejudices that lead to caste-based discrimination, denial of entry into some temples remains in practice.

HAF has stood firmly against such discrimination, and sought to clarify that castebased discrimination, while prevalent throughout South Asia, is not intrinsic to Hindu philosophy and teachings in its groundbreaking report published in 2011, Hinduism: Not Cast in Caste - Seeking an End to Caste-based Discrimination.

HAF applauds introduction of ‘Do No Harm Act’

WASHINGTON D.C The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) welcomed the introduction into Congress of the Do No Harm Act, an amendment to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).

Introduced by Congressmen Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) and Bobby Scott (D-VA), with the backing of more than 40 civil rights groups, the Do No Harm Act would, in the words of Rep. Kennedy, “Clarify that no one can seek religious exemption from laws guaranteeing fundamental civil and legal rights.

It comes in response to continued efforts across the country to cite religious belief as grounds to undermine Civil Rights Act protections, limit access to healthcare, and refuse service to minority populations.

Specifically, the Do No Harm Act would limit the use of RFRA in cases involving discrimination, child labor and abuse, wages and collective bargaining, access to health care, public accommodations, and social services provided through government contract.”

At its heart the Do No Harm Act supports what the history of American legislation and case law has made clear: in a

diverse, pluralistic society you cannot use your fundamental freedoms to inflict harm on others or to undermine their basic human and civil rights.

“The Hindu American Foundation supports the Do No Harm Act because protecting the sanctity of the ‘Establishment Clause’ should be the utmost priority of the federal government when seeking to prevent religious discrimination,” said Suhag Shukla, Esq. HAF Executive Director and Legal Counsel.

“The Do No Harm Act will prove to be an effective roadblock for businesses, various institutions, and even government agencies that seek to circumvent a founding principle of the United States of America. It’s now incumbent upon both sides of the aisle to ensure its passage.”

In 1993, Congress passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in response to a Supreme Court case undermining the rights of religious minorities.

In recent years, however, the misapplication of RFRA has been used to deny health care coverage for employees, claim exemptions to civil rights law, and complicate justice in child labor and abuse cases.

COMMUNITY State department scholarship to study Punjabi

Sharon Nat Santa Monica College (SMC) student Sharon Nat has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language (CLS) Scholarship to study Punjabi this summer in Chandigarh, India. She is one of 560 students selected from more than 200 colleges and universities across the nation for the all-expenses-paid linguistic and cultural immersion program, a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans mastering critical foreign languages.

Nat is one of approximately 12 students from across the U.S. who will be studying Punjabi at the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) Chandigarh Language Center.

Born to a Mexican-American mother and Punjabi-Indian father, Nat grew up learning how to speak, read, and write Punjabi. But her beloved father passed away when Nat was eleven, they moved away from their Indian relatives, and—as her own form of grieving, says Nat—she stopped speaking Punjabi.

Today, Nat is a Psychology major at SMC, and incoming Director of Sustainability for the SMC Associated Students. When the college’s academic support Adelante program—which Nat is a part of—forwarded her an email about CLS, her friends at SMC encouraged her to overcome any apprehensions and apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to relearn Punjabi,” says Nat. “I want to be a psychologist, to work with people who speak English, Punjabi and Spanish,” says Nat. “I think that, as a psychologist, if I really want to understand what people are going through and earn their trust, I need to know the culture, and speak the language.” Learning Punjabi will also fulfill her desire to be true to her own culture: both the Mexican and the Indian sides. “I have always regretted that I stopped speaking Punjabi.

I’m ready now!”

During her two-month stay in Chandigarh in the Indian state of Punjab, Nat will also get to meet her relatives in India for the very first time.

Over the past ten years, the CLS Program has sent over 5,000 American undergraduate and graduate students overseas to learn critical languages all over the world.

Houston Health Department celebrates Asian Pacific Islander Heritage

On Wednesday, May 18, the Houston Health Department’s (HHD), Cultural and Linguistic Competency (CLC) team embarked onto the journey of South Asian literature to celebrate the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The CLC South Asian event team leader Varsha Vakil with enthusiastic co leads Valda Spence, Beverly Gor, Barbara Sudhoff and others presented fellow employees with the intrinsic aspect of the diversified South Asian literature.

Topics ranged from prominent literature, Ayurveda for weight loss, diverse languages and spiri-

the most diverse US cities the HHD’s CLC team makes an effort to bring Houston’s diversity to its employees. This cultural experience at the health department may assist to better serve the Houston community.

I had been to America last month and stayed there for one and half month. I visited few States of America including desert of California. I stayed most of the time in Houston.

There were heavy rains in Houston during my stay there

and a few sunny days.

Maini was also responsible for the engineering and construction of two new matsupported Jackup Drilling Rigs.

Both are currently operating-one in the Gulf of Mexico and the other in offshore Angola. Additionally, he has been involved with major design modifications and enhance jackup drilling rigs, MOPUs and MSVs. His game changing, innovative Jackup Rig Design, the R-550 D was finally built in 2015. With its introduction, Maini is finally receiving the industry recognition he deserves.

At the 2015 World Oil Awards, the innovator and the innovation were recognized.

Saadhana Samvid soars to newer heights

By NAMRATA SINHA The month of April, was a special treat for classical music lovers of Houston from the Center for Indian Classical Music of Houston (CICMH).

It all began with Saadhana Sur Sang – an interactive concert of strings held at the Stafford Civic Center on April 1, 2016 featuring some musical stalwarts.

This auspicious beginning was followed by the monthlong series, ‘Saadhana Samvid’, where disciples of Pandit Suman Ghosh presented short solo recitals to showcase their musical ‘Samvid’ (realization).

For the connoisseurs who have followed the event over the years, the growth in musicality of individuals, as well as reverence for the art form was palpable in every one of the nine sessions.

Saadhana Samvid - the brain child of Pandit Suman Ghosh, the internationally acclaimed exponent of the Mewati Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music and a torch bearing disciple of Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj Ji - is a unique event where the majority of disciples of an institution are given a larger platform to perform individually.

The poignant performances of over 80 students began on April 9th and were presented at Sugar Land, West University and the Woodlands, this annual feature of CICMH came to a close on 30th April, leaving the audience and performers alike, wanting more.

Pandit Ghosh and Smt. Ghosh not only trained every single one of the performers, but Pandit Ghosh himself was present on the stage directing and guiding the performers through the entire series that spanned over 25 hours.

He introduced every one of the performers as well as their families, often providing anecdotes pointing towards various teachable moments of the particular disciples’ musical journey.

It was truly a reflection of his never ending energy, dedication and commitment towards the Pariwar he and Guruma have built in Houston.

From disciples who had started learning with Pandit Ghosh less than a year back to senior disciples who have been under his tutelage for over a decade, Houston music lovers witnessed the fruits of not just the exceptional quality of taalim but also sincere and sustained riyaaz by the performers who demonstrated their growing relationship with Hindustani classical music.

Each of the 9 events were meticulously planned upholding the high quality of aesthetics that CICMH events have

come to be known for. As one sat through one soulful performance after another, one could sense the positive energy from everyone in the audience who rooted for their Gurubandhus on stage – needless to say, they were not disappointed!

Each and every one of the renditions was deeply emotional for everyone – often moving many to tears and with the audience spontaneously coming to their feet or simply bringing the house down with their applause.

As far as the disciples themselves were concerned, it was heartwarming to see how much it meant for them to ensure one

thing above all – that they do justice to their beloved Guruji’s divine taalim and expectations!

Houston now eagerly awaits CICMH’s next feature – Saadhana Unmesh on October 15 which will be yet another grand stage to showcase the disciples’ continuing musical blossoming.

Anupam Ray, India’s Consul General to Houston, delivered the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater HosutonShell Distinguished Lecture at the Skyline Ballroom, Hilton Americas on May 16, 2016. Following are the excerpts from his lecture: Delando Carthagea est – Destroy Carthage. This is a quote from classical Latin. It was invariably prefixed to speeches in the Roman Republic in the second century B.C. Rome was then the world’s superpower.

Carthage was Rome’s mortal enemy. Its opponent - when it came to Rome’s effort for world domination. Roman orators repeatedly affirmed their ardent desire to destroy Carthage, elevating this prefix to the status of an article of faith. The wars between Rome and Carthage dominated world politics in that period of time. Epic battles were fought and legendary historical figures rose on each side – Hannibal, Scipio Africanus and more.

I began by referring to a historical tradition because I am a student of history. Rome ultimately prevailed in the Punic Wars and destroyed Carthage.

For me the rise of India is a similar article of faith. It will happen. And it has an epic quality about it.

My talk to you is about the long term prospects of India. I talk to you not as a businessman.

I do come from a family which has some businessmen – but that is not the basis of my talk today.

I will not talk about doing business in India.

You as members of this Chamber are all businessmen with an interest in India. You have skin in the game. Most of you know more than me about what it is like to do business in India.

That is why this is probably the most important talk that I will give during my stay in Houston.

People like you, who generate wealth, who oil the wheels of commerce, who transform knowledge into wealth, are the ones who are helping write the India story.

I am speaking as a part of the policy making establishment of the Government of India.

I will not talk about why India is a great investment destination.

We all know that.

We have all heard the good news.GDP growth rates are amongst the fastest in the world.

We are on track to be one of the 3 largest economies in the world in the next 15 years and one of the 2 largest in the next 30 years.

Per capita income, whether adjusted for purchasing power or not, is rising at historically unprecedented rates. An average Indian, and there are a billion of us, like me, has seen buying power grow between 5 to 10 times in our lifetimes.

This increase means that we are buying more airplanes, more cars, more defense equipment, more solar panels, more windmills than ever before. If we don’t figure in the list of top buyers of any commodity and product, we are definitely in the list of the fastest growing buyers of that item.

Inbound FDI numbers are rising constantly. Our stock markets are at levels which would have been in the realm of fantasy a decade ago.

Indian outbound FDI is creating jobs and contributing to communities in multiple countries.

Air traffic is rising. Our ports are busier than ever.

We are building more roads, more buildings, more of everything.

We are slowly, but steadily rising through indices that measure parameters as diverse as Human Development and the ease of doing business.

We have a Fiscal Responsibility law; direct transfer of benefits has begun; livelihood security, pensions and medical insurance are beginning to go mainstream; a law for a real estate regulator has been adopted; a bankruptcy law has been passed.

We all know the bad news too and the downsides.

The fact that India houses some of the largest numbers of the poor in the world. That appalling things sometimes happen to the poor and the weak and the different. The legendary “red tape”. The arcane rules and regulations. The difficulty of doing business. The maddening complexities of daily life.

Let us talk, instead about a few broad trends in the India story.

Let us talk about the country that is asking you to Make in India, that aspires to be a Digital India and Clean India and aspires to Skill India. What kind of a country is India? More importantly, where is it headed?

The only way we can hazard a prediction about the future is by

analyzing the past. We have to heed the lessons of history. And the lessons of history, particularly contemporary history are quite striking when it comes to India.

Seen over a 50 year perspective, we are looking at one of the most dramatic transformations in history. You are seeing the journey of a country to being a poor, if proud, colony to being the most likely candidate for great power status. If there is one country in the world that is certain to attain the imprimatur of great power, i.e. membership of the United Nations Security Council, it is India. It is not “if”; it is “when.”

There is, as far as I know, no other nation that has undertaken such a dizzying ascent.

We are all practical men and women here. We know that things like this don’t happen by accident. After all, India when it was created, was not supposed to do well. What did we do right?

Let us look at recent history with a slighter shorter perspective. The working life of a person is usually reckoned to be about 35 years. I have been in my job for about 22 years. When I started work as a young diplomat, the Indian Finance Minister was still attending meetings of something called the Aid India Consortium.

It was a collection of aid agencies that met regularly to coordinate aid that was being channeled to India. Aid India meetings were sometimes held to coincide with board meetings of the IMF and World Bank.

The Finance Minister of India today still attends board meetings of the IMF and World Bank. But his priorities are very different. He attends as a member of the G20.

He attends as a representative of the country that is amongst the most important players in world trade negotiations. He attends as a country that is a major source of outbound FDI. He attends as the representative of a country that has now begun to offer development assistance on its own. He attends as a representative one the most dynamic BRICS economies and as a country that is one of the founder members of the BRICS Bank or the New Development Bank.

The Aid India Consortium is something that is disappearing from our memories. It is good that it no longer exists. But it is sometimes necessary to jog our memories to remind ourselves of how far we have travelled.

2 days ago I met 10 Congressmen in the span of a few hours – thanks to our good friend Ashok Mago – at the Republican State Convention in Dallas. They all had the same message – they see India as a partner, and a reliable partner.

Most of them were aware of what the World Bank pointed out 2 years ago. That India, and China, have raised more people out of more poverty more rapidly than any other nation in human history. The Industrial Revolution improved the lives of millions. Indian and China have improved the lives of hundreds of millions, possibly billions.

We helped ourselves. No amount of foreign aid, no amount

of philanthropy could engineer this rise.

If this is not an epic, I don’t know what is.

The Congressmen all understand, and they were quite explicit in stating so, that our best years are ahead of us.

They also appreciate that our rise threatens no one. This is the indisputable peaceful rise.

I made this stage pay tribute to the contributions of the Americans of Indian origin who have worked tirelessly to inform Congressmen about the India story.

I must also say that it is one of the great pleasures of my job to interact with a diaspora that is as successful and as prosperous as the Indian community in the United States.

I have said this in the past and I will say it again. The United States relied on the Atlantic Alliance as its principal pillar of external support in the 20th century. There is however now a bipartisan acceptance in the United States that its partnership with India will be one of the defining relationships of the 21st century. The Indian community here, the companies that are represented on this Chamber and the ever expanding network of ties – business, cultural, political, educational; the flow of ideas and experiences will be the building blocks of this partnership.

What is the kind of country with which the United States expects to have a defining relationship?

Let me look at something that was written about 10 years ago by 2 American academics: “Thirty years ago ….. it was a miracle if one was allotted a phone, and after that it took a further act of God and the benevolence of the P&T worker for the phone to work. Thirty years ago, there were only black-and-white TVs, and that too only in a few cities. Villagers did not have access to TV or the electricity to power it with.

Soon thereafter…. the Indian economy became a veritable dynamo posting an average growth of nearly 6 per cent per year over the past 25 years. Despite the inevitable, unfavorable comparisons with China, very few countries have grown so fast over such a prolonged period of time, or reduced poverty so sharply. We should indeed be proud of what India has achieved, and clearly, many Indians are. There is a buzz today in India, a sense of limitless optimism. But is it justified?”

The authors go on to list what could limit India’s growth: an absence of skilled workers; the absence of a common market; the educations system.

One of the two economists who wrote this for the IMF is now the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan.

The other is the Chief Economic Advisor of the Government of India.

I give this example to submit it to you that we are an open country. We are open to external influence. It is possible for an American academic to become India’s central banker and have to opportunity to convert his vision

into action.

This brings me to the obvious.

We still don’t have an unified market. We still have a shortage of skilled workers. So what are we talking about.

What we are talking about is how these issues now occupy political centre stage. A national debate on these issues is underway.

Our system of making laws might appear to be painfully slow. But we are a Common Law system.

For better or for worse we are democracy in which the Legislature has been empowered to make law and the judiciary to interpret it.

The Indian process is inclusive.

Everybody has been taken along and everybody must be taken along.

We are a nation that aspires to have a rule of law. And a rule of law of nation does not appear overnight.

We are trying to arrive at the destination without the lopping of heads associated with the English and French Revolutions.

If the cost of that is slower growth and missed opportunities for a few years. Well then, so be it. This is the cost of democracy and we are willing to pay it.

There will be some who will say that we are missing an opportunity. To them, I will say that the weight of historical evidence is that India always manages to overcome In the 50s, the fitful rate of GDP growth was described derisively as the Hindu rate of growth. Decade after decade our economic growth rates have inched up.

In the sixties, we were not expected to survive as a nation.

Some of our neighbors, unfortunately, still believe that. We are stronger today than we have ever been before. We have survived terrorism, insurgency and violence that would have broken lesser nations. And our economic growth rates continue to increase.

In the seventies, nobody expected us to remove poverty on the scale that followed.

In the eighties, we were derided as the nation that is permanently on the runway; a nation that will never really take off.

Well, we have taken off.

In the nineties we were described as an illiberal democracy.

The functioning of our democracy, with all its uplifting successes, its glorious failures, and its gut-wrenching problems plays out every day on prime time television and on social media on a spectacular scale. Just look at the percentages of people voting in our elections. It now sometimes exceeds 80%. This is not a sign of an illiberal democracy.

We were described by some in the last decade as a country where crony capitalism saps our entrepreneurial talents. That is until the internet and mobile telephony driven e-commerce boom came along.

It is interesting to note that more and more of India’s best and brightest – the graduates from the elite IITs and IIMs are going the entrepreneurial route.

land of Maharajahs, the hereditary caste system and hereditary political leadership do not have family members active in politics. This is a land where the idea of a meritocracy has taken hold.

This is a country that has consistently proved doomsday prophets wrong. It has consistently confounded critics.

This is a country that believes in the rule of law. This is a country that is open.

These are exactly the words that you would describe the United States. That is why the partnership between our two countries is bound to be enduring one. When you do business with India, you are doing business with a nation that is trying to be very similar to this.

We have looked at some of the characteristics of India’s economy and its polity. What about its diplomacy? Does what I have about the similarities of outlook hold up when it comes to USIndia diplomacy.

In diplomatic studies there is a theory of democratic peace. It has been established that democracies do not attack each other.

The major contribution of the United States to international relations is the creation of a liberal world order. Pax Americana was established with the creation of the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank, global trade talks.

Pax Americana is about the effort to expand the zone of democratic peace.

What does India feel about this? Let us look at how it views the the world order and the multilateral institutions that underpin this order.

This is a country that has contributed more United Nations peacekeepers to more peacekeeping operations than any other nation.

Poor as we are, we have not shirked our share of any burden.

No other developing country contributes, voluntarily, more than India to the development operations of the United Nations. Or its humanitarian operations.

No refugee has ever been turned from India.

We have had differences on major issues of international law. But we have, in the spirit of the democracies that we both are, contributed to the process of creating international law and international regimes. We have worked together to create concepts like the public health exceptions and Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in world trade.

In concluding, I would like to make a reference to the American exceptionalism that is central to the identity of Americans.

I believe that we Indians have our brand of exceptionalism. The India story is sui generis.

I believe however that American and Indian exceptionalism complement and supplement each other.

I believe that what we are living through now is the beginning of an exceptional partnership.

In support of this initiative, BAPS Charities walks across North America will contribute to the rejuvenation of dying forests by helping plant over 70,000 trees in the United States.

This year’s walk brought together close to 900 participants between the ages of 3 and 72.

The walk launched with motivational words from Congressman Pete Olson, Monzur Horani of Medistar, and superintendent of Fort Bend ISD Charles Dupre.

Congresman Olson said, “Volunteer is the most powerful word in our language.

Texans volunteer to help fellow Texans and ya’ll are doing that right here this morning by coming here and walking for these great charities.”

In addition to supporting the Nature Conservancy, the Walk Green 2016 in Sugar Land also supported Behind the Badges, Fort Bend Education Foundation and Stafford MSD Education Foundation as local beneficiaries.

At the end of the walk, Anjlika felt good about securing her future by knowing that there will be trees and scholarships.

Anjlika Patel said, “I will make certain that we plant trees and continue to take part in BAPS Charities activities.”

Olympic dreams ends for Mary Kom, Sarita Devi

Five-time world champion M C Mary Kom and Asian Games bronze-medallist L Sarita Devi failed to qualify for the Olympics after they went down in their respective second round bouts of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships here on Saturday.

Mary Kom (51kg), who was a bronze-medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, lost 0-2 to Germany’s Azize Nimani, while Sarita (60kg) was beaten 0-3 by Victoria Torres in the second round of an event from where only the semifinalists in the three Olympic categories would make the cut for the upcoming Rio Games.

The only Olympic hope left for India in the event is Pooja Rani (75kg), who is in the prequarterfinals after winning her opening bout on Friday.

“I gave my best effort after a lot of sacrifices. Winning and losing is a part of game. The decision hurts me but it is not in my hand. I just have to respect the judges decision with true sportsmanship,” Mary Kom told PTI. “I believe God has a different plan for me. I want to thank all my fans and my support team for not letting me down in this crucial moment.

I wish our remaining Indian boxers all the best and I hope they make our country proud,” she added.

Mary Kom has a hypothetical chance of making it to Rio depending on the medallists in her category but that possibility is way too far-fetched and complex at this point.

Nimani will next be up against top seed Davide Marzia of Italy who got the better of Hungary’s Katalin Ancsin.

Brahmotsavam: Stale story, weak treatment

Mahesh Babu and Samtha Srikant Addala’s characters are all carnivalesque and casual, making you feel that you bumped into them somewhere.

Be it Seetamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu or Mukunda, the middle class stories came alive as glossies just not because of a big star cast but due to his distinct aesthetic sensibility.

The language is semi-urban and when there is no dialogue, it is the visual vocabulary that moves the story ahead. In his stories, the basic plot is never complex but the emotional swirling throws light on fading attitudes and relationships.

In fact if you watch closely, there will be no story at all and his films have heavy leanings on Rajashri and Karan Johar projects that have a pan-Indian appeal.

When it comes to territories. one must note the audience is different. Addala must question himself how relevant such plots are to the current generation.

The Telugu movie Brahmotsavam that is loosely translated in this context as the ultimate in celebrations, revolves around

joint family system, harmonious existence, selflessness, respect and unconditional love for elders etc.

The first half focuses on harmonious living and post-break, it is the hero’s efforts to find his roots.

The search across generations makes you lose interest. There were boundless possibilities to narrate it in an interesting manner, but the director squanders it away.

There is a heavy hangover of SVSC and Srimantudu in this film Brahmotsavam. Technically the film is a feast but Mahesh’s looks and work can’t lift a stale story .

Satyaraj runs a paint factory with the help of his brother-inlaw (Rao Ramesh) and his four brothers; all their families live together. It is trouble in paradise when a family friend’s daughter Kajal arrives and there is a seemingly possible romance between Mahesh and Kajal.

Rao Ramesh has designs to get his daughter Pranita married to Mahesh and when that doesn’t happen, he breaks away

from the family. From thereon the hero not only works for a reconciliation but also hunts for generations that preceded him.

How long can one fawn over Mahesh’s colour and his looks, shouldn’t there be a strong story that he can lean on for support?

For instance the director shows a shot of a kid asking the hero to marry her through gestures. Samantha heaps praise on the hero in a heritage structure as well.

The saving act in all the three films came from the very talented Rao Ramesh.

Here too, when the film in the first half, when the film moves in a meaningless way for one hour ten minutes, Rao Ramesh sweeps the audience away and makes you hang on for the next half. Samantha has nothing new to offer, her expressions and body language are predictable; Kajal on the other hand has a very interesting role of a woman who has a mind of her own and charms her way through, though she has a small footage.

Dialogues are lengthy and post-interval become needlessly cryptic.

Most of the time Mahesh becomes a beguiling factor in moving the otherwise dragging plot, ahead.

His character is not consistent but is never aggressive, despite a small action scene post-interval.

The producer has provided all the big character artistes on a platter, Revati suddenly disappears after her husband’s death, and returns in the last scene.

Brahmotsavam is a confident, grand and sublime title for a noble plot that has been given a superficial treatment.

Any joy that comes from the hero or this story is only ephemeral.

Unnodu Ka: More blooper than comedy

Why didn’t some of the film’s excessive writing spill into the jokes department?

Unnodu Ka isn’t yet another comedy about how a couple from warring families unite.

It’s a lot more. In fact, it’s so much more with its countless sub-plots and characters that it becomes exhausting to sit through what should simply

have been a rollicking laugh riot.

We have two cousins, born a second apart, who hate each other. We have their fathers, descendents of two warring factions, who want their children to get married to reunite their families. We have their best friends who seek the support of these two cousins to

help them elope. Then we have a fourth sub-plot involving their village, where a ban has been imposed on chickens and eggs. We also have another one involving a prospective groom named Bruce Lee, who prefers to drive around in an ambulance to impress his fiancé.

Now, all these separate ideas could easily have flown smoothly, as long as the laughs kept coming, but that’s where we’re left starved.

Despite the repertoire of able character artists like Prabhu, Urvashi, M.S. Bhaskar, Bala Saravanan and Manobala, they just don’t have enough material to keep us laughing. Why didn’t some of the film’s excessive writing spill into the jokes department?

Instead of all the time spent establishing one set piece after another, why not focus on keeping it simple with better dialogues? In its present form, it feels more like a blooper reel than a full-fledged comedy.

Sarbjit: Rekindling hope

Aishwarya Rai “Sarbjit” has opened to mixed reviews and the media is critical of casting Aishwarya Rai as Dalbir Kaur, the sister of Sarabjit Singh, who fought for the release of her brother from a Pakistani jail. The actor turned up in the city to explain her point of view. “I did not meet Dalbir Kaur before the film’s shooting. I wanted to meet her as a person and not as an actor as it would be selfish on my part; moreover Omung (Kumar) showed me her video recordings and the excellent writings done on the subject by the media.

I went through the incredible documentation. Going through Dalbir’s story and ordeal I could relate to her feelings. It was dil ki pukar. She has great personality and struggled so much to get her brother back. I could empathise with what she had gone through.

In her spirit and energy she is amazing; she touches the core of the heart,” said Aishwarya, while speaking to the media in the Capital.

And the actor, prodded by the filmmaker Omung Kumar, went a step further while explaining the first shot of Sarbjit. “The first scene featuring Randeep and I was an important moment cinematically. We are meeting after a gap of 18 years and it was challenging as we had to set the tone of the film. On that day, Dalbir Kaur visited the sets. She met Randeep and was very emotional as he was playing her brother. When I met her I did not feel like an actor but as a human being could sympathise with her suffering.”

On the charge that her real life Sikh character did not look authentic as she could not get her accent right, Aishwarya said, “In real life, Dalbir had to speak to so many people in Delhi to ensure her brother’s release that she incorporated Hindi words in her language. Also ours is a Hindi film; so we can take liberty.” She even differentiated how bhai and ghar could be uttered in both Hindi and Punjabi.

Explaining how Sarabjit’s release kept getting postponed, Randeep said: “Government wanted to help but some incidents worked against it. Pokhran was carried out and then Pakistan retaliated with its nuclear test. Then there was bloodshed at Kargil.

Whenever hope for Sarabjit’s release started gaining momentum there were obstacles like 26/11 Mumbai Attacks, hanging of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru. But all is not lost. We should work on release of prisoners on both sides.”

Randeep said it was like two elephants fighting each other.

“And in their fight, it is the common man who gets in between.

But Dalbir Kaur’s struggle has not gone in vain as due to her efforts prisoners from both countries have been released.”

Emotions of Sarabjit’s family had to be kept in mind while working on the film as all hopes to bring him alive failed . “Omung shared responsibilities with all of us to hold on to that sensitivity throughout the film. We are all like-minded people. Everyone has contributed from soul. Dalbir saw the film and felt we had portrayed Sarabjit the right way. It was gratifying for us,” said Aishwarya.

Randeep made an impassioned appeal to the Pakistani government to release Nehal Hamid Ansari, an Indian prisoner. “Hamid is not a spy but has been in jail in Pakistan for three-and-a-half years. He had gone to meet his beloved. Pakistani government should release him as a goodwill gesture.”

BJP comes to power in Assam

By noon on Thursday when it was crystal clear that the BJP and its allies were surging towards a big win, Narendra Modi expressed his sentiments through Twitter, his favorite communication mode.

The Prime Minister called the victory “historic by all standards” and “phenomenal”. Modi pledged to “do everything possible to fulfil dreams and aspirations of the people of Assam and take the state’s development journey to new heights”.

In his serial tweets, he first congratulated the “Assam BJP karyakartas (workers) and leaders for the exceptional win” and then the putative chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal. He said he had spoken to Sonowal and “congratulated him for the performance of the party and the efforts through the campaign”.

Addressing the media late in the afternoon, BJP president Amit Shah, who could barely conceal his joy over the Assam success, claimed that although his party had secured majority on its own, it would include its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, in the Sonowal dispensation.

Asked what role the BJP envisaged for the Congress defector, Himanta Biswa Sarma - widely recognised as the architect of the victory - Shah replied: “Whatever role the CM wishes to give him.”

However, a top BJP source told this newspaper that while the plan right now was to induct

Sarma in the Sonowal cabinet, Sonowal was told in no uncertain terms that he would be required to work in “perfect tandem” with Sarma and “consult and take him on board at every step”.

“Sarma is far too important for us,” the source conceded.

The other issue before the BJP was while Sonowal and Sarma were latter-day entrants in the party from the AGP and the Congress, the BJP had a core group of old-timers who stuck by it when it counted for little.

The source said individuals like Ramen Deka, Rajen Gohain and Kabindra Puryakayastha, who started their political careers in the BJP, and those like Bijoya Chakrabarty and Chandramohan Patowary, whose entry predated that of Sonowal and Sarma, could also not be given the short shrift At the end of the day, BJP sources familiar with its growth trajectory in Assam recalled that the party’s association with the state went back a long time to the era when the All Assam Students’ Union’s agitation against “Bangladeshi infiltrators” gained traction.

Sensing the political potential in an issue loaded with communal overtones - although the Aasu itself never made a distinction between Hindu and Muslim migrants - Arun Shourie, who was not fully in the BJP then but identified himself with its ideology, and Jaswant Singh were often invited to speak by the student outfit.

For long, the BJP was bereft of a structured apparatus although the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had plunged themselves into the “infiltration” polemics.

Sources said three circumstances facilitated the BJP’s upward graph: the weakening of the AGP, a rising perception that the Congress was out to “appease” the minorities and the emergence of the AIUDF. The last two factors buttressed the BJP’s theories that the “Assamese identity”, manifest in the people’s distinctive culture, literature and way of life, was being “jeopardised” by the “outsiders” and the Bengali Hindu would be swamped by the Muslim “migrants”.

A political tsunami triggered primarily by public anger against the Oommen Chandy government has swept the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) out of power in Kerala, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made history by winning its first seat in the State Assembly.

The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) roared back to power winning 91 seats against 47 of the UDF in the 140-member House. The BJP’s victory came through party veteran O. Rajagopal, who won the Nemom constituency in the State capital by a margin of 8,671 votes. The party came very close to victory in Manjeswaram, where its nominee, K. Surendran, lost by a waferthin margin of 89 votes.

The surprise of these elections was the victory of former Government Chief Whip P.C. George, who had broken away from the ruling alliance but could not find a place in the LDF. He won by a massive margin of 27,821 votes in Poonjar, defeating all three major players in the fray.

Defeated Ministers Speaker N. Sakthan, Deputy Speaker Palode Ravi, Excise Minister K. Babu, Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John and Scheduled Tribe Development Minister P.K. Jayalakshmy and Government Chief Whip Thomas Unniyadan were among the key losers from the UDF, which drew a blank in Kollam in the south and lost all but one seat in Thrissur and Alappuzha districts. The LDF put up an impressive show in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur districts as well, in the process taking the wind out of UDF sails.

CALCUTTA Saradha, Narada, a flyover collapse and the might of a CPM-Congress combine throw anything at her, Mamata Banerjee still wins. And wins big.

Defying the odds stacked against her party, Mamata today raced past the two-thirds majority mark with a score of 211 seats in a 294-member House, leaving the Opposition alliance, or jote , looking like a cruel joke with a tally of 77, including an Independent it had backed.

Alliance leader Surjya Kanta Mishra, the CPM state secretary who had been boasting about forming the next government, himself lost.

The extent of Mamata’s victory is stunning. As the colour green spread across the map of Bengal, it was evident that marching from her fortress in the south, Mamata was now conquering large parts of the region north of the Ganga.

The number of seats jumped by 27 from her tally in 2011, when she fought with the Congress in an alliance, and her vote share shot up by around 6.5 per cent to 44.9 per cent, the best-ever for her party.

“We got 184 seats last time, but then we were in an alliance.

This time, all the Opposition parties had ganged up against us, but still we got more than two-thirds of the seats,” Mamata said at a news conference this afternoon.

Based on the numbers of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, in which the Left and Congress together had a 39.6 per cent vote share - almost the same as Trinamul’s - the alliance leaders had thundered before the polls that Mamata’s time in the hot seat was over. The hubris saw the partners reduced to rump parties with the Congress bagging 44 seats and the Left a pathetic 32.

Although a couple of exit

polls had indicated a landslide victory for the Trinamul Congress, party insiders had confessed in private that they were not expecting a big win because of a number of developments in the run-up to the polls.

Adding to the festering Saradha scandal, the Narada sting showed people resembling MPs, MLAs and other leaders of Trinamul accepting cash from a journalist posing as a businessman. Even as the Trinamul leadership was trying, unsuccessfully, to douse the flames of this controversy, the Vivekananda Road flyover collapsed, killing 26 people.

The entire Opposition, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tried to turn corruption into the key issue in the polls, forcing Mamata to go on the defensive and even admit that she could have done something about ticket distribution had she known earlier that some leaders had purportedly been caught accepting money.

Today’s massive mandate brought a 180-degree turn.

“There is no corruption in Bengal.... Bengal is a corruptionless state,” Mamata said in reply to a question on the Narada tapes.

“The campaign on corruption was false and the people defeated it,” she added.

Given that all the leaders supposedly seen on the Narada tapes, except one - Madan Mitra - won, Mamata’s claim cannot be contested.

Election done and dusted, Mamata now faces the immediate challenge of snuffing out post-results violence. A Trinamul worker was hacked to death allegedly by Congress supporters in Purulia while several party offices of the Opposition were ransacked or torched.

After a fiercely competitive campaign, the violence could spin out of control unless she acts quickly. As she opens her second innings, her first task will be to restore people’s steadily dwindling faith in the law-and-order machinery.

Despite tall claims, her first five years were arid in terms of industrial investment. Without new industry and jobs, trainloads of Bengalis will continue to head out of the state in search of work.

Also, the victory will not change the fact that the state’s finances are in a mess with a debt exceeding Rs 200,000 crore.

Asked how she would describe her victory, Mamata said: “Unnayan ar manusher joy (It’s a victory of development and people).”

Seasoned politicians like Mamata have the gift of the gab to describe complex outcomes in simple language, leaving a lot to the imagination.

The Telegraph tries to unravel the mystery behind the massive mandate.

Joker in the pack One major reason for Trinamul’s success could be a swing in BJP votes in favour of the ruling party. The BJP’s vote share has dropped to a little over 10 per cent from around 13 per cent (minus the share of its ally, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha) in the Lok Sabha polls.

Political scientist Biswanath Chakraborty said: “The lion’s share of the votes BJP lost this time went to Trinamul. The alliance was expecting BJP votes to come to its kitty, but that has been proven wrong.”

Chakraborty explained that BJP voters would be expected to be anti-Left and anti-Congress and would tend to gravitate towards Trinamul.

Besides, with a vote share of over 10 per cent, the BJP in many places would have made the contest triangular and split the anti-Mamata vote.

“There are several seats and the number can be as high as 100 - where the quantum of BJP votes was more than Trinamul’s victory margin.

This means the BJP queered the pitch for the alliance,” Chakraborty said.

Alliance leaders linked the switch of BJP votes to Trinamul to a tacit understanding between the two parties. At the news conference, Mamata

had to face questions about her possible dalliance with the BJP to remain relevant in national politics.

She, however, distanced herself from the BJP but without the usual belligerence. “I cannot go with the BJP because of my ideological differences. But if there are issues linked to the interests of common people, I can extend support,” she said, referring to her backing for the Goods and Services Tax Bill.

A section of the Alimuddin Street leadership complained that the Congress had failed to transfer its votes in favour of Left candidates. The allegation, CPM sources said, was aimed at deflecting criticism within the party for the alliance flop show.

The combined vote share of the Left and the Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls was 39.6 per cent, while this time it has dropped to 38.2 per cent 25.9 per cent for the Left and 12.3 per cent for the Congress.

This would appear to indicate a drop in the Left’s vote share from 2014, but the Left contested 200 seats instead of all the 294.

“It is convenient to blame the Congress for the decline in vote share. But we must introspect and admit that even the alliance contributed to Trinamul’s kitty,” said a CPM state committee member.

One of the major problems the CPM has been facing since Mamata’s ascendance to power is that she has made what were once core Left issues her own.

After riding to power with her land acquisition protests, Mamata stuck to her stand against forcible takeover of land. Despite representations from industry, she did not climb down from her opposition to SEZs. “While the class character of our party changed and we started talking about big industry and the need to support businessmen, she became more Left than us and usurped our place. We had nothing new to offer,” said a CPM insider.

As most Left leaders remained locked into the rhetoric of the past, their foot soldiers moved en masse to Trinamul.

The people of Tamil Nadu armed the ruling AIADMK with a total of 134 seats, but also gave the DMK-led combine 98 seats to make it historically the largest opposition elected to the Assembly.

“My party and I are indebted to the people of Tamil Nadu for giving us this historic victory,” Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said, soon after her electoral triumph.

“I have no other interest in life except working for people of Tamil Nadu,” Ms. Jayalalithaa said. “My life is dedicated to the people of Tamil Nadu and I will continue to strive for the betterment of the people and the State till my last breath,” she added, making sure to assure the people that her electoral promises would all be fulfilled.

Among the first few congratulatory messages came from Prime Minster Narendra Modi.

He later tweeted that he had

spoken to her on the telephone and congratulated her, as well as passed on best wishes to her.

Senior IAS and IPS officials, AIADMK MPs and cadre greeted Ms. Jayalalithaa at her residence.

A six-cornered contest literally came to naught in terms of seats won. Ultimately, the verdict was split between the two Dravidian parties — the DMK (by itself taking 89 seats, with the Congress winning eight and IUML one) and the AIADMK — indicating that the idea of a third front or alternative is yet to cut its political teeth in the state.

The PWF–DMDK combine and the PMK did not manage to get even one seat. The BJP too was unable to open its account, though it came a close second or third in many seats.

There were upsets in the AIADMK too with some of the more prominent candidates, including Ministers and former

Ministers, not making it past the post. On the contrary, most of the key candidates of the DMK won satisfactorily.

Scenes of celebration on one side of Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai — at AIADMK chief Ms. Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence — were in sharp relief to the despondency and disbelief on the other side — in Gopalapuram, where DMK president M. Karunanidhi lives — as information about the leads poured in. For the AIADMK cadre, the victory was made sweeter by the fact that the party was retaining power, for only the second time since MGR did so in 1984.

Earlier, Congress leader Kamaraj had enjoyed two terms as Chief Minister between 1954 and 1963. Barring these exceptions, Tamil Nadu has always given the mandate alternately to the AIADMK and the DMK.

‘Politicians have made voters corrupt’

Political parties and politicians in Tamil Nadu have shown that it is possible to make almost everyone in the State corrupt by offering money and other freebies, former Chief Election Commissioner of India N. Gopalaswami said on Sunday.

“Tamil Nadu is in a unique position. It is the only State in the country where they (politicians) have made voters corrupt. It has come to a situation where voters now bargain with parties as to how much (money) they will get to vote for a particular party,” Mr. Gopalaswami said addressing a voter awareness event organised by Bharat Vikas Parishad, Anna Nagar, and J-16 Civic Exnora on Sunday.

The former CEC added that politicians are willing to spend more money on elections as they believe they can “recoup this and earn back even more.

If they spend five lakh rupees, they believe they can easily make 50 lakh or five crore rupees once they come to power.”

“There is no fear of law anymore. Cases take ages to be completed. This could be due to a variety of reasons. But people now believe they can get away by doing anything,” he said.

He urged residents associations to create a list of all candidates filing nominations in their constituency and spread awareness among the residents. This would go a long way in helping reduce bad politicians from being voted to power.

“Improvements are happening slowly. We have come a long way since our first elections,” he said.

When a member of the audience asked him about the efficacy of the NOTA option, he said voters should make use of it if they find none of the candidates are good or worthy of being voted to power. “There will come a day when NOTA will become more powerful.

The decision of the Supreme Court to allow the option was a step in the right direction,” he added.

Can’t blame allies for our failure, says DMK leader DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin on Friday rejected the argument that his party could not win the majority because it had allotted more seats to its alliance partners, particularly the Congress, and failed to retain adequate seats for itself.

“You could have used the reverse argument if we had given fewer seats to our partners and had lost the elections,” said Mr Stalin who spearheaded the DMK’s election campaign.

“The DMK contested 174 seats and it is a good number for any political party. We have performed very well, and along with our allies, we have almost succeeded winning 100 seats,” he told The Hindu .

The DMK allotted 41 seats to the Congress and five each to Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

MMK returned one seat to the DMK. Dr. Krishnasamy’s Puthiya Tamizhagam got two seats. Former IAS officer P. Sivakami, N.R. Dhanapalan and Pon. Kumar were allotted one seat each and they contested on the Rising Sun symbol.

The party also gave seats to the three DMDK rebels – V.C. Chandrakumar, S.R. Parthipan and C.H. Sekar.

Mr. Stalin alleged that the ruling AIADMK was able to secure a majority by distributing money to the voters.

“In some places, the Election Commission did prevent money distribution, and in some places, it failed to act. Money helped the AIADMK in the Coimbatore belt. Our cadre

He was taking the books to his room to study. “Gandhi,” said a student, “you are not really going through this stuff, are you?”

He snatched up one of the fat volumes. “Look, you chaps,” he cried, “he is actually reading Roman law in Latin!”

The students laughed. One of them said, “Let me tell you, Gandhi, I passed the last examination in Roman law by spending two weeks on a printed summary.

Gandhi explained to his lighthearted friends that he worked so hard for sheer interest in the subject, and that he wanted to acquire knowledge for its own sake.

After a short trip to France, he prepared for the final law examination. The results were soon declared. He had passed with high marks. On June 10, 1891, Gandhi was called to the bar. He was admitted as a barrister and the next day was formally enrolled in the High Court. The following day, June 12, he sailed for India.

Gandhi’s three-year stay in England was eventful. Those were days of great intellectual activity, and there was tolerance for every school of thought. The country as a whole was a living university. As Gandhi sailed for home on the S.S. Assam, he felt that, next to India, he would rather live in England than any other place in the world.

Ingredients: 3 cups cauliflower florets, 1 cup maida (all purpose flour), 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 1 tsp green chilli paste, 1/2 cup chopped spring onions, 1/4 cup chopped capsicum, 2 tsp chopped place in a colander & set aside garlic, 2 tsp soya sauce, 2 tsp to- for 20 to 30 minutes. In a medium mato ketchup, 1 tsp chilli sauce, pan, heat ghee, fry the onions till translucent and add all the spices salt to taste, oil for deep frying.

Method: Cook cauliflower flo- in order & saute for 2 minutes, rets in salted water for 5 minutes. stirring constantly. Rinse eggplant.
