AN AMAZING DAY COUT NOVEMBER 2017 INDIA 37 LU B AT BOLLYWOOD PARK

Cover: It was celebration time at India Club with five back-to-back festivals being marked at the club, each more successful than the other. Besides the marking of Indian festivals, the club was a beehive of activity with master artists dropping by for a workshop to promote Indian art and encourage young talent, and workshops on laughter, destressing and taking time out at the Bollywood Park.

Dear Members, Season’s greetings… AS WE CELEBRATE the festive season with events lined up practically every other week, we hope you are enjoying the celebrations with us at the Club. We had the Janmastami, Onam, Navratri, Karwa Chauth, Diwali festivals back-to-back over the last three months and each was more successful than the other with great participation from the members.

Back-to-back festivals a huge hit and more events and trips planned

Member

We have more events lined up over the next quarter which promise more fun and frolic for all… We are planning a Ladies only tour for our members coinciding with the National Day holidays to Phuket and Bangkok. This is the first time ever we are attempting an endeavour of this sort and are hopeful of a great response. January 2018 end will also see Club members going to see the Northern Lights in Norway – definitely one trip for the bucket list…. The refurbishments continue with the relocation of the Table Tennis Room to the Coolsportz complex and the extension of the Splash Bar which should be ready by January end. We look forward to hearing from you and sharing your thoughts with us to help us serve you better….

Best regards,

Vasu Shroff

Club does all it can to make members happy "UNDER the pillar of cohesive society and preserved identity of national agenda, the UAE government aims to make the country amongst the top five happiest countries in the world by 2021 so that its citizens feel proud to belong to the UAE." India club, the paramount venue for social, cultural and sporting activities in our community, is playing its part. The management and staff ---seen and unseen --- of the club, work hard to bring happiness and positivity among its members. India club is always vibrant with activities to cater its diverse community of all ages. The recent activities which I enjoyed were a visit to Bollywood Park, Diwali Nite 2017 and the Laughter Workshop. I had apprehensions visiting Bollywood Park, after having seen Orlando, California Disney Park and Universal Studios. But it

turned out be a fun and relaxing evening. Diwali Nite 2017’s Broadway style Bollywood Musical was a treat to the fans of the golden era of Hindi cinema. The simplicity of visuals, the melodious voice of the singers and the narration of the anchor pushed an emotional button of Bollywood music lovers. Diwali night, a flashback of audio visual artistry, was thoroughly enjoyed by all and members took home sweet banarasi mint, thanks to our chairman Vasu Shroff. India Club has not ignored the members who are not gym lovers. Keeping this section of the members’ well-being in mind, the club organized alaughter workshop with Mr. Suman Suneja,

a qualified laughter yoga master. There were different types of laughter and loads of health and wellness tips to stay fit, eat healthy, live well and laugh abundantly. Chairman Vasu Shroff was present during the first session of the workshop to encourage the participants. The huge effort that goes into coordinating each event is commendable. It is easy to set high standards but maintaining them is difficult. Members can say with pride that India Club has succeeded in doing so. The management and staff are so passionately committed to making India club a home away from home for its members that they deserve a special applause. Suresh Kulkarni Membership No 2122

Amazing trip LIKE most India Club initiatives, I was expecting the outing to Bollywood Park to be a rewarding experience. So it was with a lot of enthusiasm that my family and went to the club from where luxurious coaches took us to our destination. We explored the park with a map and swipe cards that granted us unlimited access to food and beverages. Our first port of call was the “Hall of Heroes” where we experienced the Ra One and Krish rides. Next was a chance at making it big in Bollywood -- courtesy of the theatre experience. The show gave us an insight into how real movies are made.Thank

you, India Club, for this amazing trip. Sanjeev, Rashmi, Jeevaha and Saaransh Coelho. Membership No 4937

Onam celebrated ONAMfestivities began with people of different communities of India turning up in traditional Keralite attire. The stage had been set for singers and wonderful dance performances; the one that first comes to my mind is the traditional twist to the Ed Sheeran song “The Shape of You”. There wastug-of-war, Onam dances, and prizes for the Best Dressed man and woman. But the piece de resistance was the traditional lunch or sadhya which consisted of 20+ items! Well done!

IT WASa pleasure to participate in the Navaratri celebrations held at the Club’s premises. It was well- organized right from the security check point, to the food options, the music and decorations, shuttle transport etc. My friends and I were transported to a wonderful festive world. The club had made special efforts to create the right ambience for the participants. Well done and look forward to it in 2018. Radhika Suresh. Membership No.3708.

First experience

THIS WAS the first DahiHandimy family and I would experience in Dubai. It all started when my daughter was approached to participate for the team. I was astonished at the dedication and the strengths of the participants. I was a complete stranger when I walked into the venue hoping to click pictures of my daughter participating, but by the time I left it was a lot of goodbyes with promises to visit again. Thank you, India Club, for a magnificent event. Kruppa Koshy Membership No. 5683 www.indiaclubdubai.com

The Dahi Handi celebrations is the only one of its kind in the Middle East and India Club has been holding this for the last eleven consecutive years. Radio Jockeys from Suno 102.4 FM were sporting enough to form their own team and participate in the breaking of the pot. The other highlights of the evening were the water sprinklers and the popular foam pool that is a hit with all who attend. When it comes to the pool, age is no bar and both young and old get in for the sheer fun of it. Music for this year’s celebrations by DJ Franky kept the crowd on their feet. Besides the entertainment, a food court with a variety of delicacies added spice to the evening.

HIS year’s Diwali celebrationsat the India Club was something different. It was electric as the club marked the festival on October 27 with a Broadway style Bollywood musical --- an audio-visual experience in “black and white” that traced the golden era of Hindi cinema from 1945-1968. A troupe of 10 artistes from Niche Entertainment was flown in from India for the show. The concept and direction of the musical was by Milind Oak, the script was by Praveen Joshi and the

captivating show was by Rahul Solapurkar. The 150 minutes long show had the club members take a nostalgic trip as the troupe rendered songs from the black and white era of Hindi films. To create the right atmosphere the club had had in place the right décor and lighting that captured the “good old days”. Since music on an empty stomach does not sit well, the club had organized a multi-cuisine food court with live cooking stations with various Indian

snacks for the picking. And since there can be no Diwali without sweets, a variety of traditional sweets was also organized for the attendees at the show. A raffle draw by Lodha Developers was conducted at the end of the event for twenty lucky winners.

INDIA NOVEMBER 2017 CLUB

ARVA CHAUTH is a very special day for all married Hindu women. On this special day they fast and pray for the safety, health and longevity of their husbands. On October 19, over 185 married ladies of India Club celebrated this auspicious day strictly observing the fast which means not even having a drop of water to ensure the well-being, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. The age-old, one-day longfestival begins with the fast that starts before sunrise and ends only after offering prayers and worshipping the moon at night. The women, who have spent their mornings painting henna on each other’s hands, congregated at the club to celebrate the tradition with each other as the narration of the legend of Karva

Chauth continues. While chanting the prayers, they pass the pooja thali from one to another. The auspicious day serves as a reminder of the eternal bond between husband and wife. All the ladies who came looked gorgeous. They were dressed in finery with intricately decorated Henna designs on their hands. This year the club’s sponsor BonSai Solutions gave a makeover to all the ladies with the Italian Product deBBY. After the pooja (a ritual during which people show reverence to God) the ladies participated in acatwalk competition, winning prizes ranging from make-up products to an entire makeover. On their way back home, each lady received a hamper from FOCO, Fantastic, Bikaji and vouchers from MAD Dance. www.indiaclubdubai.com

W

ATER is without doubt the single most important resource you should provide yourself, especially when it is hot. Water is our most basic, physical need but it is also one many people take for granted. India Club, in association with Yhi Spa, held a talk on the importance of

drinking water on August 26 and the event saw 24 ladies from the club attending the talk that was given by Ms. Bianca Hoffman. Ms Bianca’s talk covered all aspects of water intake, it’s importance for the body, how much water to drink and when to drink. The ladies were also given an explanation on the benefits of

Morrocan massage, Turkish massage as well as steam and sauna. The talk was followed by a round of housie, where one lucky lady got a complimentary voucher for secrets of the dessert treatment worth Dh650. All attendees received discount vouchers and a YHI SPA (Melia Dubai) CD as giveaways.

HAIR TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW?

AKING care of your hair is as important as taking care of your body. Afterall, your hair is an extension of your body and the way it looks can make a difference to the way you look. The hair needs as much nutrients as your body and the more care you take of your hair, the more vibrant you will feel. Given the importance of hair care, India Club, in association with Dr. Batra’s, invited club members and their guests for a talk on “Hair fall is not a cosmetic but a medical concern” by Dr. Usha Khatri MD (Homeopathy), on September 20. Over 35 ladies turned up for the illuminating talk that covered all aspects of hair care, including tips on hair care that will boost one’s confidence. Dr. Usha Khatri explained the cause of hair fall and how to maintain it and followed her talk with a one-on-one consultation to all who attended. The event ended with a round of housie and a raffle draw.

A RUN FOR UNITY AND PEACE

R

UNNING consistently ranks in the top 10 most popular sport and fitness activities and, this year, India Club organised its fourth edition of the Independence Day run. It drew more than 50 runners from different nationalities, including India, UAE, USA, UK, South Africa, Malaysia, Norway, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Germany, New Zealand and Kenya. The run route was from the club to Zabeel Park (1 or 2 rounds there) and back (by choice 6-11km). A tough route but one that the runners managed. The run was followed by dinner at the club giving all runners an opportunity to interact with the more experienced ones in long distance running. It was hailed as a good initiative to encourage a healthy way of celebrating the auspicious day, and introduce new runners to the sport. It also was reflection of peace, harmony and unity amongst different nationalities with sport as the binding force.
