Dear Readers,

In this year-end issue, we have chosen an exciting tale of expedition for the cover story. India’s first Jimny Owners’ Group – ‘Simply Jimny’ has set a record by successfully reaching the world’s highest motorable road. The convoy left from Panchkula, Haryana on September 16, 2023 and ended its journey at Umling-La Pass in the inaccessible area of Ladakh on September 22. Another group also had the courage to conquer the height of Umling-La Pass, wherein 106 riders from all over the country took part in an expedition. They set a new record by completing the journey of 1003 kilometers in six days.

Meanwhile, the third ceremony of Convocation@IBROffice was held successfully, the full report of which we have brought for you. Promising record holders from many states participated in this monthly event. Many of them stunned the audience by showcasing their talent live on stage. This ceremony, organized in the new and grand office premises of India Book of Records, is becoming a matter of curiosity for the record holders, in which people are booking well in advance to participate.

Many other interesting stories are included in this issue, such as the case of implanting a pacemaker in the heart of a three-week-old baby. A medical team from Chennai, Tamil Nadu performed this miracle, which is a rare situation.

G

reeting loved ones on festivals and annual days is a common social norm. The days of sending greeting cards are no more, as online services have occupied the domain.

Indian short-video apps became popular after the central government banned ByteDance’s TikTok and some other Chinese apps in 2020 following an Indo-China border clash. ShareChat is one such application that has made the task of sharing good wishes effortlessly. It is an Indian social networking service platform, owned by Bengaluru-based Mohalla Tech. It was founded by Ankush Sachdeva, Bhanu Pratap Singh, and Farid Ahsan, and incorporated in January 2015. ShareChat app has over 350 million monthly active users across 15 Indian languages.

The application was in the news recently when it set a record for the maximum number of wishes shared on a festival online.

21.7 million enthusiastic people shared heartfelt greetings with each other using ShareChat’s content on WhatsApp. It helped people in spreading festive joy by allowing them to express goodwill on the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami and celebrate tradition with unity, gaining its space on the prestigious India Book of Records (IBR).

According to an official communication, ShareChat boasts of Bollywood, hilarious jokes, heartwarming shayari, and trending videos. It has dynamic chatrooms, where users can immerse in a world of entertainment, laughter, and creativity. They can discover Bollywood videos and indulge in the latest movie trailers, iconic dance sequences, and exclusive behind-thescenes footage. They can get their daily dose of entertainment and stay updated with the buzzing world of Hindi viral videos.

Touch the Top mling La Pass is the world’s highest motorable road at 19,024 feet Above Mean Sea Level. It presents a very big challenge for anyone who attempts to reach there. It tests not only physical endurance but also mental tolerance for any individual. As a group of ten Maruti Suzuki Jimny Owners, we wanted to do something that tested not only our physical and mental limits but also the vehicle in which we were planning to go. Successfully reaching the top of the world gave a tremendous boost to our confidence and we wanted to derive a sense of having accomplished something that we would be proud of, says Manik Ahuja, one of the achievers and part of Simply Jimny – the first Jimny Owners’ Group in India. The group created history by setting a new record for being the first

convoy of Maruti Suzuki Jimnys to reach the highest motorable road in the world. The extraordinary feat has been recognized by the India Book of Records (IBR).

Going to Umling La Pass is fraught with danger and there are huge risks involved. Treacherous road conditions, extreme weather, lack of oxygen, fatigue, etc. are all big obstacles to overcome on such a journey. The reliability of the vehicle and its ability to work under extremely low air pressure and oxygen are other challenges that need to be overcome. The group faced many of these difficulties on the way, however due to careful planning and execution they were able to avoid many of the health-related issues and were able to make it successfully. The Jimny Owners’ Group convoy started from Panchkula (Haryana)

on September 16, 2023, at 5.30 am and finished the expedition at Umling La pass on September 22, 2023.

There was a group of 10 families in their personal Maruti Suzuki Jimny cars. Many families also had their children along.

The youngest member of the team was 8 years old, while the eldest was 60. Apart from the 10 families it also had a media team of 4 professionals who covered our entire journey. The expedition was published as a 10-part documentary on the YouTube channel SimplyJimny. Dr Pradeep Bharadwaj and his wife Dr Anita Bharadwaj were the adjudicators from the India

Book of Records. They verified the claim before announcing the IBR record.

Manik Ahuja told the India Book of Records magazine, “We had a once-in-a-lifetime experience during this expedition. All 10 families accomplished and set the IBR record successfully.

During our journey, we experienced the breathtaking beauty of the Zanskar Valley, encountered sub-zero temperatures, stayed in camping accommodation, and drove for more than 10 hours on average every day. The team was very excited and full of confidence all the way and we overcame problems of

lack of oxygen and our fatigue by always having our target in our sights. We encountered rain, snow, and dry cold subzero weather and crossed rivers and valleys, sometimes all in a single day. The experience was great and everybody learned how much they can push themselves and what are their physical and mental limits. Overall I would say it was a fantastic trip that everyone will remember throughout their lives. Thanks to IBR for recognizing our feat.”

The event acted as a catalyst, reigniting the flame of talent within each participant, and inspiring them to strive for excellence. The achievers shared their stories, exemplifying

perseverance and dedication. The presence of media ensured that the unsung stories of these achievers echoed far and wide, turning them into local and national stars.

India Book of Records was established in 2006. A team of talented professionals, led by Managing Editor, Mrs Neerja Roy Chowdhury, work tirelessly, following the International Protocol for Records. The 19th edition of the India Book of Records (2024) is about to be released soon. It is associated with the Asia Book of Records and boasts a records database of more than 50,000 entries.

Fastest kid to recite 1 to 20 multiplication tables The record for being the fastest to recite multiplication tables from 1 to 20 was set by Gantem Shouri Aryan (born on August 2, 2018) of Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. He recited multiplication tables from 1 to 20 in 4 minutes and 36 seconds, at the age of 5 years, 2 months, and 14 days.

Youngest to win the National Kettlebell Championship The record for being the youngest to win the 10th National Kettlebell Championship - 2023 was set by Yunay Gupta (born on May 13, 2017) of Guwahati, Assam. He won the 10th National Kettlebell Championship – 2023, in the Snatch category, which was held from March 18, 2023, to March 19, 2023, in Pune, Maharashtra, at the age of 5 years, 11 months, and 14 days. His proud grandparents received the honour.

Honored for unique Acupuncture skills Urvinder Pal Singh (born on April 24, 1958) of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, was honored for his acupuncture skills. He treated many patients suffering from frozen shoulders and they felt 80% to 90% recovery in just three minutes.

Fastest individual to recite the Sundar Kand The record for being the fastest to recite the Sundar Kand was set by Rakesh Kumar Chauhan (born on June 1, 1980) of Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh.

He recited the complete Sundar Kand in 40 minutes and 49 seconds.

Fastest to recite names of PMs and Presidents The record for being the fastest to recite the names of Indian Prime Ministers and Presidents was set by Aadithyan AV (born on June 26, 2014) of Pathanamthitta, Kerala. He recited the names of all the Indian Prime Ministers and Presidents in just 32 seconds and 68 milliseconds, at the age of 7 years, 5 months, and 25 days.

Felicitation of a child for his sharp mind Aaral Pravin Jadhavar (born on May

29, 2021) of Pune, Maharashtra, was felicitated for identifying the English alphabet, numbers from 1-10, 11 colors, 8 shapes, 14 parts of the body, 24 animals, 6 insects, 11 vehicles, 11 food items, 9 fruits, 12 vegetables, 18 household items, 20 actions, 8 opposite words, 4 professionals; reciting numbers from 1 to 30 and the days of the week, at the age of 2 years and 2 months.

Coconut husks peeled with teeth in 1 minute The record for peeling the maximum number of coconut husks with teeth in one minute was set by Shivkant Indoria Bhardwaj (born on January 10, 1985) of Mahendragarh, Haryana. He peeled the husks of six coconuts with his teeth in one minute.

Jumping jacks performed in 1 hour by an individual The record for performing the maximum number of jumping jacks in one hour was set by Burzin Tehmtan Engineer (born on March 22, 1991) of Mumbai, Maharashtra. He performed 5306 jumping jacks in one hour.

Maximum forward rolls performed in 1 minute The record for performing the maximum number of forward rolls in one minute was set by Yoddha Ramkrishna (born on September 17, 2018) of Mumbai, Maharashtra. He performed 23 forward rolls in one minute at the age of 3 years, 3 months and 4 days.

Maximum personal diaries maintained by an individual The record for maintaining the maximum number of personal diaries was set by Pawan Bansal (born on March 1, 1977) of Model Town, Delhi. He has maintained 20 personal diaries (one diary for each year) from May 31, 2003, to September 20, 2022.

A kid quickly identifies the flags of 35 countries Manan Singh Tuli (born on January 18, 2020) of Delhi, was appreciated for identifying flags of 35 countries in 3 minutes and 45 seconds; and solving 30 riddle-based questions (Bee Riddle) correctly out of 35 questions in 8 minutes and 40 seconds at the age of 2 years and 10 months.

Child honored for making 80 sketches in 10 days Yug Jitendra Punjabi (born on November 12, 2015) of Surat, Gujarat, was appreciated for making 80 sketches on various themes in 10 days, from July 8 to July 17, 2022, at the age of 6 years and 8 months.

Felicitation for identifying 100 vehicles in 7 minutes Hruday Bharadwaj S (born on January 8,

2021) of Bengaluru, Karnataka, was appreciated for identifying 100 vehicles, including trucks, tractors, and models of cars, in 7 minutes and 20 seconds by viewing their pictures on a large screen, at the age of 2 years and 1 month.

Maximum plants’ names written on a glass bottle The record for writing the names of the maximum number of plants on a glass bottle was set by Preeti (born on August 27, 2003) of Jind, Haryana. She wrote the names of 182 different plants in alphabetical order on a white-painted glass bottle using a marker pen.

Maximum countries’ geographical epithets recalled The record for recalling the maximum number of countries’ geographical epithets in one minute was set by Shivansh Bansal (born on May 12, 2015) of Delhi. He recalled 54 countries’ geographical epithets in one minute, by viewing the names of the countries on a laptop screen, at the age of 8 years and 19 days.

Honored for receiving a DGBR Commendation Badge Dr Pradeep Kumar Bhardwaj (born on October 28, 1978) of Delhi who is the pioneer of Mountain medicine in India, was honoured for receiving a DGBR Commendation Badge from Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), on June 7, 2023, for selfless service at various places.

Youngest volunteer to perform mountaineering training The record for being the youngest volunteer to perform mountaineering and survival training exercises at a high altitude was set by Angad Bhardwaj (born on April 15, 2010) of New Delhi. He performed mountaineering and survival training exercises at a workshop held in association with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at Umling La Pass (19,024 ft; highest motorable road) from August 21 to August 25, 2023, at the age of 13 years, 4 months and 10 days.

Maximum yoga poses performed by an individual The record for performing the maximum number of yoga poses while floating in the water was set by Pankaj Jain (born on November 8, 1968) of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He performed 32 yoga poses in 1 hour and 30 minutes while floating in the water, at Cawnpore Club Swimming Pool.

Largest Tambola for women

T

ambola is a popular game, mostly played in close-knit communities like clubs and other setups. Tambola turned out to be a vehicle for a social organization in Gujarat to boast of setting a new record under the renowned national record keeper of Bharat – the India Book of Records (IBR). The record for organizing the largest Tambola event for females was set by Ms Hita N Patel, Chairman of WE - Women Empowerment Committee of Karnavati Club Ltd, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. A total of 1000 females participated in playing Tambola having 4 rounds.

The event started at 2 pm on September 9, 2023, and ended at 5.30 pm in Golden Glory Hall, Karnavati Club Ltd. The first three rounds had six variations, followed by a bumper round.

All the participants received goody bags with unconditional vouchers and products and the winners were given cash prizes also.

Hita N Patel told the India Book of Records magazine, “WE - Women Empowerment Committee of Karnavati Club believes in education, empowerment and entertainment of its club members.

With this thought, Tambola is a perfect event where companies, entrepreneurs, or individuals get a platform to promote their products among the Club members. The members also come

Tambola gives a chance to lucky winners to get or buy these products along with some cash component as a part of the winning prize. Refreshments are also served.

So it becomes an eagerly awaited event by the Club members and guests. It also takes care of the motto of WE - Women Empowerment Committee of Karnavati Club.”

Tambola was organized by Hita Patel with the support of Sunita Chauhan and Seema Mandora. More than 1000 female participants, basically the club members and their guests, played the game. The club had hired a house Master for Tambola. There were a total of four Rounds, with each round having three full houses and three variations. Gifts for the winners were arranged by the sponsor companies. There were unconditional gift vouchers to avail the products of the sponsor companies, gift hampers of consumer companies, and cash.

There were a total of 30 sponsors under different categories.

Dushyant Chaturvedi, the adjudicator from the India Book of Records validated the claim before announcing the record. He handed over the record certificate and the medal to Hita Patel in the presence of esteemed guests and members.

Hita Patel, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, finance wiz, real estate developer, media producer, and interior designer, said that WE COMMITTEE looks forward to bringing new programs and events which provide a platform for the club members to grow as an individual, create awareness and also entertain

them. She has plans to organize many more events like the above in the coming time.

hoenix Marketcity, one of the premium malls in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, had book enthusiasts come together for a one-of-a-kind social cause. ‘Karpi’, a Tamil word that means to ‘teach’ in English, was a week-long book donation campaign, organized by the Rotary Club of Ambattur in association with the Vels Group of Institutions. The drive was to make people aware of helping the needy and underprivileged children. People were asked to freely donate textbooks for needy students. The culmination of this notable drive was held at the central atrium of Phoenix Marketcity, where Chennaites from far and wide came over the weekend to drop off books in large numbers and be a part of this noteworthy cause. The campaign was recognized by the India Book of Records (IBR) as the ‘Largest Book Donation Drive’, where more than one lakh books were successfully collected.

The books that were collected over the week were then categorized and handed over to underprivileged children of government schools and colleges, to further emphasize the importance of education for one and all. travel enthusiast, biker, and educationist, Arun Parthiban, the head of strategy at Vels Group of Institutions loves to hit the road and explore untapped territories. He believes that those who seek adventure should not really have a destination in mind. While on his rides, he interacts with the locals and through their stories, makes options for his next trip. He lets the strangers decide the destination, and embarks on his next ride.

His journey across thousands of miles has not only taken him across various twists and turns but has also rewarded him with a lot of memories and experiences. Arun has entered the India Book of Records (IBR) for leading an expedition to Umling La, the

highest motorable pass in the world, with a total of 106 riders, starting from south India.

Arun Ennum Naan & Friendscribers of India jointly set the record for the maximum riders participating in an expedition to Umling La. The journey which started from Leh crossing Hanle to Umling La, covering the distance of 1003 km in 6 days, on September 14, 2023. Their expedition demonstrated the unyielding spirit of exploration and camaraderie that unites riders from diverse backgrounds in their pursuit of adventure.

From a very young age, Arun felt a deep connection with the open road. It was not until his final year in college that he acquired his own bike. This gift ignited a passion for weekend rides, and amid these adventures, life unfolded. Arun’s pursuit of a master’s degree took him to Singapore, briefly putting a pause on his passion. After a six-year hiatus, he came back to his roots. “Riding was a grieving process for me when my dad passed away in 2020. It was from then that I started going on rides that lasted a couple of days, marking a new chapter in my riding endeavor,” he said.

Balancing his professional work with his passion for riding, Arun has over 2.5 lakh subscribers on his YouTube channel. “I have honed my skills in team management; I have independent teams reporting to me in my professional space. In fact, having key individuals in your team can help you streamline your workload, and this has been true for me,” he said. Arun treads on journeys to discover uniquely captivating places. hrombophlebitis is a condition that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins, often in the legs.

It is an inflammation of the wall of a vein with associated thrombosis, often occurring in the legs during pregnancy. In superficial thrombophlebitis, the vein is near the surface of the skin. In deep vein thrombosis or DVT, the vein is deep within a muscle. DVT increases the risk of serious health problems.

Both types of thrombophlebitis can be treated with bloodthinning medications. The record for ‘taking a pledge to prevent Thrombophlebitis by NURSE’ was set by Zydus Healthcare, Mumbai, Maharashtra. The word NURSE was derived from Nurses United for ThRombophlebitiS PrEvention and Care.

Thrombophlebitis. Zydus Healthcare, Mumbai created a separate portal www.theunsungheroes-nurses.com. During this period, 6,635 nurses took a solemn oath to prioritize patients’ safety first and proactively work to prevent Thrombophlebitis. The feat was jointly recognized by the prestigious record keepers of the nation – the India Book of Records (IBR) and the Asia Book of Records (ABR).

It is worth mentioning here that a blood clot in a leg vein may cause pain, warmth, and tenderness in the affected area. Causes of thrombophlebitis include trauma, surgery, or prolonged inactivity. Deep vein thrombosis increases the risk of serious health problems. It’s usually treated with blood-thinning medications. Superficial thrombophlebitis is sometimes treated with blood-thinning medications, too. Symptoms of

superficial thrombophlebitis include warmth, tenderness, and pain. A patient might have redness and swelling and see a red, hard cord just under the surface of the skin that is tender to the touch. Symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include swelling, tenderness, and pain in the leg.

The awareness campaign highlighted the fact that patients must consult a competent doctor right away if they have a red, swollen, or tender vein, especially if they have one or more risk factors for thrombophlebitis.

The patients may have shortness of breath or chest pain, or have other symptoms that may indicate a blood clot traveling to their lungs (pulmonary embolism).

Thrombophlebitis is caused by a blood clot. A blood clot can form because of an injury to a vein or from having an inherited disorder that affects how the blood clots.

Prevention of this condition was also highlighted during the campaign. It was explained that “sitting during a long flight or car ride can cause your ankles and calves to swell and increases your risk of thrombophlebitis. To help prevent a blood clot -take a walk. If you are flying or riding a train or bus, walk up and down the aisle once an hour or so. If you are driving, stop every hour or so and move around. Move your legs regularly. Flex your ankles, or carefully press your feet against the floor or footrest in front of you at least 10 times each hour. Drink plenty of water or other nonalcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration.”

Sandip Ramrao Kale, the Editor, Author, and Convenor of the Voice of Media said to the India Book of Records magazine that the media body has more than 33,000 journalists on its membership roll. The organization holds more than 150 events during the year. It encourages a positive approach to reporting and writing. The founder and national president of the Voice of Media said, “Whatever good is going on, it is going on because of journalism. Still, journalists working with various media organizations and their families have to suffer a lot. Attitudes in society and other factors are responsible for the poor condition of journalists. Nagaraj gave the longest financial lecture of 24 hours starting on September 30, 2023, at 10.45 am and ending on September 31, 2023, at 10.45 am at Thendral Mahal, Podanur, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He addressed the assembled students and others via YouTube live on a variety of topics such as capital markets, stock trading, and mutual funds. The audience comprises individuals from various categories, including students,

This demographic is often seeking stable financial solutions.

His goal was to equip individuals with the knowledge needed for better-saving plans with proper growth.

It was initially planned as a free financial awareness event, aimed at guiding people towards better financial planning.

My primary advice was to avoid treating the stock market as a gamble. Market involvement requires a business-oriented approach, focusing on opportunities rather than luck. I educated participants on the rules to follow for profitable stock trading, including how to select the right company for investment,” said Nagaraj, while talking to the India Book of Records magazine.

The longest T-10 cricket tournament

haneeru Harish Rao (52), former Minister of the Medical, Health, and Finance Department of Telangana, has set the record for the longest T-10 cricket tournament at a single ground. There were 373 teams from all age groups, who played 10 over tournament playoffs, which started on February 23, 2023, and ended on June 24, 2023, at Prof Jaya Shanker Mini Stadium, Siddipet. The achievement was recognized by the India Book of Records (IBR) and Asia Book of Records (ABR) simultaneously.

For the uninitiated, T-10 cricket matches have a 10-over-aside format, a duration of 90 minutes, and include two-over Powerplays. In this format, many matches can be played in a day, and tournaments can be played over just a few days.

This format is considered appropriate for the Olympics or other major sporting tournaments. The first major tournament for T-10 was played in December 2017 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The tournament was played over four days, with a round-robin followed by semifinals and the final.

Thaneeru Harish Rao represented the Siddipet constituency in the Telangana State Assembly from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party. Between 2014 and 2018, Rao served as Minister for Irrigation, Marketing & Legislative Affairs of Telangana. With his win at the 2018 assembly election, Rao became the youngest six-time member of any legislative assembly in India. He was appointed as the Minister of Finance in the cabinet expansion held on September 8, 2019. Later on, he was also appointed minister for Medical, Health, and Family Welfare, on November 9, 2021.

Rao was born in Thotapalli village, Karimnagar District in the Velama Community Family, to Satyanarayana Rao and Laxmi Bai. His father was a government employee. He studied at Vaniniketan Paathashala and completed his diploma from Government Polytechnic in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Further,

he completed his graduation From Kakatiya University. He started his political journey with Bharat Rashtra Samithi as a youth leader. He was elected to the assembly at the age of 32 from Siddipet and raised his strong voice in the assembly on various issues of the Telangana region. Soon, he became a key member of Bharat Rashtra Samithi and started working as an Internal party strategist. He along with other MLAs resigned as the Congress party delayed the announcement of the bifurcation

of Telangana. He won as MLA with a majority over 58,000 though it was a major setback for the party winning only 7 MLA seats and 2 MP seats out of 17 MLA’s and 4 MP’s contested.

In 2009, he was once again elected as MLA from Siddipet constituency with over 60,000 majority. He was elected as a BRS party legislative member. Soon after, he and 10 other members of the BRS resigned from the Legislative Assembly in support of a separate State for Telangana. In July 2010, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh ordered the Election Commission of India to conduct by-polls in Siddipet and other towns across the Telangana region. Harish Rao contested again from Siddipet defeating opponent Babu Mohan, from the Telugu Desam Party, yet again.

The infant gets a pacemaker

A

team of doctors from Chennai successfully implanted a permanent pacemaker in an infant weighing less than one kilogram. With only three such reported cases worldwide, this was the fourth successful surgery to be documented. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors from Sooriya Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, headed by Dr Deepa Hariharan, Senior Consultant, Neonatologist, and Paediatrician, Sooriya Hospital. At the time of implant, the baby was 3 weeks and 6 days old on June 6, 2019. The baby was born prematurely on May 10, 2019, weighing 900 grams, and had a congenital heart block. Having been born with a low heartbeat rate, the baby required resuscitation and life-support measures as soon as it was born. In the process, Dr Deepa set a record for implanting a pacemaker in the heart of the smallest baby. The feat was recognized by the record keeper of the nation – India Book of Records (IBR).

Dr Deepa recalled, “When the baby was brought to us, it had an extremely low heartbeat rate - about 55 to 60 per minute, whereas the normal rate is 150 to 160 per minute. In the following three weeks, we gave supportive treatment for lung growth, maintenance of heart

function, and nutrition. Despite this, the baby’s weight and health progressively deteriorated. The heartbeat rate dropped to 40 per minute, which is extremely low and causes severe complications such as cardiac arrest. Following this, the doctors were left with no choice but to implant a permanent pacemaker.

There have only been three such prior surgeries. Considering this, the technical and surgical expertise about this procedure is very limited.”

To understand the intricacies of this surgery, the doctors got in touch with surgeons from abroad who had performed this procedure and had also informed the family about the complications that might arise. However, the surgery was not an easy one, say doctors. As the baby was very small, the pacemaker could not be accommodated in the lungs and had to be implanted in the abdomen, with wires connecting the pacemaker to the heart. Following the success of the surgery, the doctors were then faced with postoperative complications such as fluid accumulation in the chest and brain. As the baby’s digestive system was not completely developed at that time, the doctors had to supplement its nutrition intake through injections.

Subsequently, the baby gained weight and was removed from the ventilator after 70 days. At the time of discharge, the baby was on oral feed and weighed 2.7 kg. However, such cases are extremely rare. “In this case, the baby’s mother had been diagnosed with lupus, an auto-immune disease. While premature birth and its associated complications were earlier caused due to high blood pressure, diabetes, and stress in the past, premature birth due to auto-immune diseases is increasing in the country. This trend is common in the West.

But, of late, we are observing this in our country,” says Dr Deepa.

While the reasons for auto-immune diseases are unknown,

they could be partly attributed to genetic factors and lifestyle.

Creating awareness of lupus, related premature births, and the lack of adequate technical and surgical expertise in India is of utmost importance.

58-year-old foreign national with nagging back pain and vomiting episodes got a new life after doctors at a Pune hospital used a minimally invasive technique to remove a watermelon-sized adrenal tumor, the cause of all her miseries.

The surgeons removed the giant tumor through three tiny incisions, one of 10 mm diameter and two others of 5 mm diameter each. Experts said most adrenal cysts or tumors are less than 10 cm in diameter and are usually discovered incidentally. “The massive tumor was tightly adherent to the left kidney, spleen, pancreas, and large intestine. We removed the mass using a 3D laparoscopy technique, which has set a record,” said Ace Hospital’s senior surgeon Dr Suresh Patankar, who led the team.

In India, tumors up to 21 cm in size have been removed by laparoscopy method. The tumor removed by Dr Patankar and his team was 23 cm in length. It was recorded as the biggest adrenal cyst (tumor) removed using 3D laparoscopy in India so far. The achievement found a proud place in the prestigious Asia Book of Records (ABR). The doctors in Nigeria, where the patient stays, had advised the woman to undergo surgery in 2010. She, however, kept delaying the surgery out of fear. When her condition did not show any signs of improvement, she decided to seek medical treatment in India. The 58-year-old patient chose Pune as one of her relatives was treated at the same hospital in the past.

“The tumor was 15 cm in size when detected in Nigeria in 2010.

It grew to 23 cm in size and occupied more than half of her abdomen. It took the team four-and-a-half hours to remove the mass. In most such surgeries, the adrenal gland has to be removed

But we managed to preserve it,” said Dr Patankar. Three liters of cyst fluid were removed from the massive tumor. The patient recovered completely within four days after the surgery and was discharged home. Besides persistent back pain and vomiting, she had hypertension, which also settled down after the removal of the tumor. The team had senior doctors including Dr Gururaj R Padasalagi, Dr Mayur Narkhede, Dr Kashinath Vasant Thakare, and anesthetist Dr Sonali Vaste.

It is worth mentioning that Adrenal glands, also known as suprarenal glands, are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both kidneys. These glands produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, and other essential functions. Adrenal glands are composed of two parts -- the cortex and the medulla, which are each responsible for producing different hormones. When adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones, this can lead to adrenal insufficiency, termed Addison’s disease.

Adrenal glands may develop nodules that can be benign or malignant, which can potentially produce excessive amounts of certain hormones leading to various health issues. An adrenal gland is made of two main parts. The adrenal cortex is the outer region and also the largest part of an adrenal gland. It is divided into three separate zones -- zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata and zona reticularis. Each zone is responsible for producing specific hormones. The adrenal medulla is located inside the adrenal cortex in the center of an adrenal gland. It produces stress hormones, including adrenaline.

Glaucoma Awareness Campaign G

laucoma, a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging a nerve in the back of the eye called the optic nerve, has no cure, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect the vision. There are many types of glaucoma, but the most common type is called open-angle glaucoma — that is what most people mean when they talk about glaucoma. Other types are less common, like angle-closure glaucoma and congenital glaucoma. Doctors use different types of treatment for glaucoma, including medicines, usually eye drops, laser treatment, and surgery. If someone has the problem of glaucoma, it is important to start treatment right away. Treatment would not undo any damage to the vision, but it can stop it from getting worse.

Awareness among common people regarding the disease can play a crucial role in containing the problem. In a bid to create awareness about the disease, Micro Vision, a Division of Micro Labs Ltd Karnataka, established a record for organizing the largest awareness campaign on Glaucoma disease. The campaign which commenced on March 8, 2023, and concluded on March 18, 2023, witnessed the participation of a total of 2,22,512 people at 1973 eye care clinics and hospitals across the nation. The mass activity for eye protection and creating awareness set a record under the banner of the prestigious Asia Book of Records (ABR).

The eye specialists serving in different parts of India told the visiting patients that symptoms can start so slowly that one may not notice them immediately. The only way to find out if one has glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. At first, glaucoma does not usually have any symptoms. That is why half of people with glaucoma do not even know they have it. Over time, they may slowly lose vision, usually starting with side or peripheral vision -- especially the part of the vision that is closest to the nose.

Because it happens so slowly, many people cannot tell that their vision is changing at first. But as the disease gets worse, they

may start to notice that they cannot see things off to the side anymore. Without treatment, glaucoma can eventually cause blindness.

It is important to learn that anyone can get glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk. People are at higher risk if they

are over age 60, and have a family history of glaucoma. In case of doubt, talk with the doctor about the risk for glaucoma, and ask how often the eye check is necessary. If someone is at higher risk, he/she needs to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam every 1 to 2 years. Scientists are not sure what causes the most common types of glaucoma, but many people with glaucoma have high eye pressure and treatments that lower eye pressure help to slow the disease.

Eye doctors can check for glaucoma as part of a comprehensive dilated eye exam. The test is simple and painless; the doctor will give you some eye drops to dilate or widen the pupil and then check the eyes for glaucoma and other eye problems. The exam includes a visual field test to check the side vision.
