City House and Country House Porto's old town is a beautiful ensemble, defined by azulejos and bright stucco. There are some walls and foundations, however, which seem to evoke a different vernacular – a stonecraft more reminiscent of country farmhouses. For this workshop, each student was asked to select a building in the old town. The chosen building was to have some resonant flaw, and at least two visible facades. As a second step, the building was removed from its location and stripped of details and openings. The resulting mass became the raw material for the design task. The design challenge was to explore ways to define and stage the found mass. Different possibilities were developed through the sculpting of spaces and study of compositions. Photographs from Arquitectura Popular em Portugal were suggested as models for how tensions and ambivalence can strengthen a composition.
