INDIA and her wonderful neighourhood (SRI LANKA, BHUTAN, NEPAL, MYANMAAR) India is a nation which has over twenty two official languages, fifteen hundred and seventy six classified mother tongues, and four hundredand fifteen living languages, representing a tremendous potpourri of people and cultures with their roots all the way from Central Asia, to Africa, aswell as Europe, and one where a clash of civilizations brings about transformational change on a near daily basis. India in 2015 once again deservesthe close attention of the world. In the closing phase of the year past, a singular accomplishment made a certain set of experts around the world suddenly sit up and take notice.

Dear Mr. Singh We are now back in Japan after a most enjoyable trip.

Although a lot was packed into the itinerary, we really got a good tour of the places visited, especially with the excellent guides.

Thank you for the great organization! I am attaching a photo of the group (I'm not in it).

We hope to make another trip in the future, since we haven't been to so many parts of the country. We are especially interested in visiting those places that have maharajah's palaces which have been converted to luxury hotels, such as Udaipur, any maybe other.

I also heard you can organize trips to Africa - this could be a possibility too.

Dear Inder Jit – No words or photos can describe the INDIA that you brought back to life for our school group. As you know, we hit the ground running -and for some of us, that exhilarating immersion did not end for nearly a month!! And, frankly, we didn't want it to end ever...

The personal hospitality which you exhibited right from the start -- inviting us into your home and welcoming us with your parents and wife and beautiful daughter and of course wonderful Rohit and Juma -- meant so much to us. Your personal touch reminded us how very personal India is -- and that's why so many of us have returned over the years.

Logistically -- both the North and South trip were flawless. When you anticipated a border problem in the south, you quickly switched us from bus to plane. All of the hotels were great -- I enjoyed being in different ones in different cities. We were certainly well fed throughout the trip, and it helped that as old Delhi wallahs, nobody got sick.

On the personnel front, our only regret was not being able to see more of you -- I bet you have already organized a trip to China -- where you will be a rock star!!

Rohit and Juma were both terrific -- going the extra mile not only to accommodate last minute changes, but also to try and get to know us. They always had a positive outlook and a ready smile -- and were always willing to engage in whatever way they could.

When our little SOUTH group learned that Rohit would not be coming with us, we were in a panic, but your system worked well and we were met by lovely and knowledgeable guides and drivers all along the route.

By now, IJ, I know you have seen it all, in terms of Ferengi behavior in India. I just hope that you know that the entire group felt VERY special in your good care -- recognizing how meaningful this return trip to Mother India was for all of us.

Please stay in touch -- and alert us when u come to the States next year. As you know, I have already recommended you & TP to friends - but beyond the business connection, I am happy to reconnect as a friend.

Concurrently Sita Sarna brought eight American women who were based in Singapore and the US. Sita’s extremely detailed planning for what was her fourth trip with TigerPaws took her on a unique routing even though her group were all newbies to India…

The year concluded with another American group this one of ardent photographers visiting Manipuri’s Sangai festival and native Polo, the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. This was a 18 day overlander covering 2540 kilometers through Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal via Assam. (see trip number P-BW-AEF-NE 026 for 2017) The group enjoying special moments

Hi Inder Jit, back home it's 2;30 am in houston and i'm done sleeping i'm still on india time....what a nice trip we all had it was fantastic!!! the hornbill festival was so beautiful, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh had also beautiful villages and tribal people. We were not long enough in varanassi it's amazing and crazy beautiful divine place i want to go back for at least 5 days, maybe next year. Everything in india is spectacular!!! i shot thousand of pictures this week i'll work on it and post it on facebook. Thank you for everything again.

Dear Inder Jit, I think Caroline has covered everything, there isn’t much more to add except to re-iterate what an amazing time we had and if I could hop on a plane right now and do it all over again I would. Special mention must go to our drivers who became our friends. They were always cheerful, happy and helpful and made the trip completely stress free for us.

Every time we arrived at a new destination there would be a Tiger Paws representative there to meet us, we did feel very well looked after. The hotels for the most part were excellent, generally small and full of character and each one different to the previous one. We were very happy that we were able to secure tented accommodation at Ranthambore Bagh.

We are really very happy with everything you provided for us, it was an amazing trip, I loved every single minute of it. India is such a great country; I love the people, the colours, the vibrancy, the food, the weather, the history, in fact all of it.

Dear IJ What friends you and your team have become. As I said to you at Spashram, you really managed to far exceed our planned expectations, and we certainly set you quite a challenge. Each stage of our thirty-one day trip fell comfortably into place, and as we "modified" things to suit our hopes, you quickly came up with solutions and put them in place.

We don't know just how you managed to find guides in each place who immediately caught the flavour of our aspirations, understood why we had chosen some fairly unusual destinations, and who then "opened" doors to the very people we hoped to see, but you did.

We were also very impressed with our excellent driver Rinku, and would recommend him to anyone for his calm attitude to all types of traffic, punctuality and polite good manners. After 2,100 kilometres with him over 25 days, I believe he earned that praise.

Madhya Pradesh (Central India) is the second largest state of India in terms of its size.

Right in the heart of India. Blessed with thick green forests and a large variety of wildlife Madhya Pradesh is nature's trough. Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks are world famous national parks. The king of the forest may be easily sighted at Kanha and Bandhavgarh. Equally at home in the jungles of Kanha and Bandhavgarh is the Gaur who does not fear the tiger.

Dampa Wild Life Sanctuary which is a Project Tiger Reserve is situated at the western part of Mizoram along the international border with Bangladesh, lies at a distance of 127Km from the capital of Aizawl.

Dampa consists of moist deciduous forest at lower reaches and evergreen and semi-evergreen forests with natural grassland at higher altitudes. It is the largest sanctuary of Mizoram notified in 1985 covering an area of 500 Sq. km which later became a Project Tiger in 1994.

The list of animals found in the area includes Tiger, Sloth Bear, Leopard, Elephants, Sambar, Barking Deer, Hoolock Gibbon, Giant Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Wild Dog, Wild Pig, Porcupine, Slow Loris, Gaur, Leaf monkey, Capped langur, Rhesus macaque, and some species of small cats.

So far 215 birds have been recorded here and an ardent birder is likely to find more.

Wildlife in Central India attracts large number of wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and ornithologists from different parts of the world. The wildlife sanctuaries in the central region of the country offer various scopes of discovering the rich and varied flora and fauna.

Bandhavgarh National Park located in Madhya Pradesh is one of the best and picturesque tiger reserves of India. It is located in the picturesque surroundings of the eastern edge of Satpura hill ranges and Vindhya hill ranges. In the year 1968, Bandhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary was notified as a National Park. Further, in 1993 it was included in the renowned Project Tiger in India.

Kanha National Park is also popular for its Tigers. It also houses some endangered species of local herd of Barasinghas (Swamp Deer).

Recent surveys show that the total tiger population in this reserve is near about 70 to 75 percent of the total population in the country.

Thus these islands were infamously known as the 'Black Water Prison' or 'Kala Pani'.

Kaziranga National Park: The trip features the famous Kaziranga National Park, first discovered by Lord Curzon in 1904. We take an elephant safari through such a difficult terrain where jeeps cannot venture.

Two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses live in the park, and Kaziranga has the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world. The park also has large breeding populations of elephants, water buffalo and swamp deer. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high-species diversity and visibility.

Manas National Park: The only Tiger Project in Assam, Manas is one of India's most magnificent National Parks. It is situated on the bank of the river Manas at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is a wellknown World heritage site with its unique combination of scenic beauty and rare wealth of wildlife.

Covering an area of 519.77 Sq. Kms, it has a core area of 360 Kms and is situated in Barpeta District. Manas are one of the nine tiger reserve sanctuaries in India. Tigers however are not the only wildlife to be found here. Manas have its own peculiar faunal features, the rarest species of which are Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Buffalo etc. Other commonly seen animals are Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Samber, Swamp Deer, and Hog Deer etc.

The trip ends in Kolkata, the city of joy was established in the year 1686, as a result of the expansion plans of the British Raj. It was during those times that European powers were heading their way towards capturing the small villages of Sutanati, Govindpur, and Kalikata. TRIP BW-WL-063 SUNDARBAN TIGER RESERVE “UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE” The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world (140,000 ha), lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India’s Sundarbans World Heritage site inscribed in 1987. The site is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python.

Sundarbans National Park

The Sundarbans forest is about 10,000 sq km across India and Bangladesh, of which 40% lies in India, and is home to many rare and globally threatened wildlife species such as the estuarine crocodile (Crocodilus porosus), royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris), Water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), Gangetic dolphin (Platinista gangetica), and olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). The forest in India is divided into the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and 24 Parganas (South) Forest Division, and together with the forest in Bangladesh is the only mangrove forest in the world where tigers are found.

The Sundarbans delta in India has been a priority region for WWF-India since 1973 due to its unique biodiversity. While it supports a sizeable population of wild tigers and other wildlife, it is also an ecologically fragile and climatically vulnerable region that is home to over 4.5 million people. Securing the future of the Sundarbans, its biodiversity and people requires a long term vision that can integrate climate adaptation and conservation strategies along with shorter term interventions such as ensuring sustainable livelihoods, access to clean and sustainable energy and effective human wildlife conflict management.

TRIP CEX-NF-RJ 010 RAJASTHAN’S BANESHWAR TRIBAL FAIR AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE FOREST AND NOMADIC TRIBES OF WESTERN INDIA Baneshwar Fair is organized in the month of January-February at a small delta formed by the river Som and Mahi in Dungarpur District, from Magh Shukla Ekadashi to Magh Shukla Poornima. The name Baneshwar is derived from the Shiva Linga in the Mahadev temple of Dungarpur, Rajasthan. Majority of the people who attend the fair are Bhils, a tribal community of Rajasthan. Bhils or tribal people from Dungarpur, Udaipur and Banswara constitute the major part of the gathering. The fair is very famous and is organised at a very large level. The pranpratishtha ceremony of the idols to the temple was performed on Magh Shukla Ekadashi. Since then onwards a fair is organized every year to celebrate this auspicious event.

The other celebrations of the Baneshwar Fair include magic shows, folk dances, acrobatic feats and animal shows.

The Baneshwar fair is a combination of two fairs. One fair is organised to pay tribute to the Lord Shiva, known as Baneshwar Mahadev. And the other fair is held to celebrate the completion of the construction work for the Vishnu temple by Jankunwar, the daughter-in-law of saint Mavji.

The priest or Mathadish arrives in a massive procession to the fair site from Sabha and takes a dip into the river. Then Aarti of the Mathadish is performed and Raslila are reenacted at the night in the Lakshmi Narayana temple.

TRIP CEX-NF-RJ 011 RAJASTHAN’s BANESHWAR TRIBAL FAIR WITH THE GOLDEN TEMPLE OF THE SIKHS- AMRITSAR Baneshwar Fair is organized in the month of January-February at a small delta formed by the river Som and Mahi in Dungarpur District, from Magh Shukla Ekadashi to Magh Shukla Poornima. The name Baneshwar is derived from the Shiva Linga in the Mahadev temple of Dungarpur, Rajasthan. Majority of the people who attend the fair are Bhils, a tribal community of Rajasthan. The temple of Mahadev remains open from 5.00 in the morning to 11.00 in the night during this Fair. The morning starts with the bathing of the Shiva Linga, after which saffron is applied on it and an Aarti is performed with burning incense. In the evening, ash is applied to the Linga and an Aarti is performed again, but this time with a wick lamp. The night is livened up with the Bhils singing traditional folk songs around a bonfire. Offerings of pulses, rice, wheat flour, salt, Jaggery, ghee, chilies, coconut, cash, etc are also made at the temple, by the devotees.

THE GOLDEN TEMPLE OF THE SIKHS: The Golden Temple , also known as Harmandir (also Darbar) Sahib was the inspiration of Guru Arjan Dev Ji the fifth Sikh Guru. In keeping with Sikh the pir to lay the foundation of Darbar Sahib in Jan, 1588. Characterised by its unique entrance doors facing all your directions of the compass, the Golden Temple welcomes everyone regardless of the religion or faith and services langar (free food) throughout the day. The sunning sanctum, shimmering in the water of the holy tank (sarovar), flanked by spotlessly clean marble walkways makes it breathtakingly beautiful.

They printed a wonderful photo of a Sikh worshipper in the sacred pond at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. I think I am probably the only person in Port Angeles who has actually been there!

We get a good idea as to how they all live. Their staple food is rice, generally cooked with meat or vegetables. They are fond of beef, pork, chicken, dogs, cats almost any living thing! Chillies are used in good quantity; milk is only now becoming popular. Rice Beer is produced locally and drunk by everyone.

Naga villages were built on hilltops, a defensive strategy against inter village rivalries, and are fortified with stonewalls, bamboo spikes and wooden gates. The ‘village always came first’ and the society was so organised that the basic requirements of food, clothing and shelter are guaranteed to all the members. There are no absentee landlords, and no class of landless peasents.

Tribal dances are performed mainly during festivals, marriages and harvest. War dances, dance during festivals of each tribe and bamboo dance are some of the commonest. When the ritual is performed, the dancers are usually clothed in colourful costumes and jewellery.

The tribes had been maintaining a life and tradition of their own different to other race. Contrary to the fact that they might not open up to the outside world, the Nagas' striking characteristics is their hospitality and cheerfulness.

TRIP SPT 041 EXPLORING INDIA’S BUDDHIST HERITAGE SITES AND THE SPIRITUAL CITY OF VARANASI In the ancient text the Mahaparinirvana sutra, the Buddha informs his followers that to attain merit and a noble rebirth, they should by go on pilgrimage to this birthplace (Lumbini), and also where he gained enlightenment (Bodhgaya), first taught (Sarnath), and attained Nirvana (Kushinagar).

Lumbini: Lumbini in southern Nepal is where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha. It is just a short distance from the Shakya capital of Kapilavastu.

Pilgrimages focus on the sacred garden which contains the site of the birth, the Mayadevi temple, the Pashkarni pond and the Ashoka pillar.

Bodhgaya: It was in Bodhgaya in Bihar, India that Prince Siddhartha found Enlightenment (nirvana) under the bodhi tree after meditating for 49 days. No longer a bodhisattva (mentor), he became Lord Buddha, the Enlightened One. Sarnath: Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath after achieving enlightenment, about 10 km from the ancient holy city of Varanasi. It was here that the Buddha established his first disciples (sangha) to promote his new doctrine. The splendid Dhamekha Stupa at Sarnath was originally erected by King Ashoka, as was the famous lion capital pillar, now the proud symbol of India. Kushinagar: At Kushinagar, Lord Buddha fell ill and left this world in 543 BC. His mortal remains were preserved in eight commemorative chortens, and then further distributed by King Ashoka into 84,000 stupas across his kingdom and beyond.

TRIP CEX-NF-MP-GJ 013 THE ELOPEMENT FESTIVAL BHAGORIA IN CENTRAL INDIA AND GUJARAT’S BHAVNATH FAIR The Bhavnath festival honours Lord Shiva - the third God of the Hindu Triad (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv). The Bhavnath Mahadev Temple here is a shrine ensconced in myths and legends of the ancient (Puranic) era. The fair itself is so ancient that its precise origins are unknown. Like any other Indian Mela, you will see the people in their traditional colorful dresses enjoying themselves. Another novelty is Naga bavas /Sadhus…as one sees them in Kumbh Mela.

The Bhagoria is a Festival of Love (and elopement) where tribes of Central India celebrate the annual crop yield after the winter harvest season comes to an end.

The onset of spring and approaching Holi is the time for everyone, (Festival of Colors) celebrate. BHAGORIA is a riotous celebration of life and love marked by music, dance and colour.

But, what makes Holi so unique and special is the spirit of it which remains the same throughout the country and even across the globe, wheneverit is celebrated.

The Festival of Holi is the Festival of Colors and unifies much of Hindu India in the north. It is the celebration of spring and harvest and is also a time to let one’s hair down when ancient customs and the rigidity of tradition observed on a daily basis is abandoned. While there are many places where the festival of Holi is full of riotous color, the one at Vrindavan is particularly enchanting.

People from all corners of India, rather the world gather, at Mathura-Vrindavan every year to feel the essence of Holi in the land of Krishna.

The underlying feeling of this fun-frolic was love and devotion. Even today, romance can be experienced in the very atmosphere in the Krishnanagari.

TRIP CEX-NF-PB 017 HOLA MOHALLA–PUNJAB’S FESTIVAL OF COLORS Hola Mohalla is an annual Sikh festival, celebrated extensively over three days mainly at the Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara, in the state of Punjab. It is a martial fair that was introduced by Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, to fortify the Sikh community by carrying out martial training and mock-drills, along with religious discussions.

The festivities of Hola Mohalla begin by visiting the gurudwaras for early morning prayers. Durbars are held and the Guru Granth Sahib is read. Kirtans and religious lectures are carried out and after the religious ceremonies are over, the ‘prasad’ is distributed among the people.

The evening is filled with a lot of anticipation and thrill, as martial members of the Sikh community (Nihang Sikhs) display their physical strength through daring acts like mock-battles (Gatka), sword-fighting displays, archery and exercising on speeding horses. They also splatter colours on the audience. This is followed by cultural activities including music, dance and poetry programs and competitions to unwind the charged up atmosphere. A procession is set out on the last day, and the Panj Pyaras walk in front crossing all the major gurudwaras in that area. Hola Mohalla is the time to celebrate and dedicate oneself into community service. ‘Langars’ are organised, and local people come forward to help by arranging the raw materials for the langar, cleaning the gurudwaras, and washing the dishes.

TRIP CEX-SS 064 AJANTA-ELLORA “UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES” Ajanta and nearby Ellora caves are one of the most bewildering archaeological places in India. located in the Maharashtra, the site is about 300 kilometers northeast of Mumbai, has been designated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. These caves are not natural but man-made, built by cutting huge granite hillside. It is said that caves were built by Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monks, who worshiped and meditated in the caves.

One the walls and the pillars of caves elegant status are carved, in addition there are separate places in the caves believed to be as a meditation rooms. The caves were discovered by a British army officer in 1819, John Smith till it was enshrouded in oblivion.

Ajanta and Ellora caves upholds an artistic legacy that will be an educative lesson for the generation to come.

Ajanta caves are the relics of Buddha’s two phases, separated from each other by good four hundred years. The architectural marvels concurred with two school of thoughts in which one thought says of older Hinayana, which represent Buddha in pillar, stupas, footprints or throne. Another thought known as Mahayana gives lord Buddha a human form. There are 29 caves those were reclusive place for Buddhist monks who used simple chisel and hammer to carved elegant figures on the walls of caves. The major difference between Ajanta and Ellora caves is that the latter were never ‘lost’. These are 34 in numbers and carved into sides of basaltic hill. It is situated kms away from Aurangabad. The structure depicts the life of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism were built during 350AD to 700 AD period. The traditional name "Chadar “ or “sheet” refers to the frozen pathway, which was the only way in and out for Zanskaris in winter, when all other routes are closed due to heavy snow. A trade route for centuries ,now the route is renowned for winter trekking among adventurers. Using trained local Zanskari porters and experienced guides, and we are able to see the least interfered with microcosms of Ladakh, and thus one of the last few surviving cultural satellites of Tibet.

This geographical isolation together with the esoteric nature of Buddhism practiced here, has enabled its some ten thousand inhabitants to preserve and perpetuate their cultural identity. The Chadar trek allows you to penetrate this isolation and to examine some of the villages along the Zanskar river in the midst of winter. A visit to the ancient monastic establishments of Karsha and Zangla heightens one’s insight of what lies behind the Zanskar Mountains, or the Inner Himalaya. Chilling and Lingshed are the only sizeable villages on this trek until Hanamur and Pidmo before Pishu and Zangla in Zanskar. The trek is a challenge for not just natives but for outsiders as well. The Lidder River runs through the Pahalgam, in a rushing grey-green torrent, foam-alecked, breaking in curling waves against the boulders that lie in its path.

The monastery has a remarkable history and the surrounding area presents an interesting topography that is spread with yellow loess formation. The Alchi monastery lies 69 kms. west of Leh, the most famous and largest of all the Gompa built by Rinchen Zangpo in 11th Century. The monastery houses some of the best murals and frescoes representing the Kashmiri style of Buddhist iconography. Each monastery in Ladakh is distinct in itself and for those who wish to experience the uniqueness of Ladakhi monasteries this is an ideal opportunity.

Galloping through the desert on a Marwari is an experience only to be had in Rajasthan, but its hard to say if I enjoyed the Polo ponies on the Dhoondwar ride or Marwaris from Dundlod more... riding through villages where time has stood still since the 15th century –women on their looms weaving carpets, children following as we made our way to the palace - turned - hotel with grooms wating to receive our horses. Thimphu Tsechu is one of the biggest festivals in the capital. Celebrated annually in the autumn season for a period of 3-4 days, this festival is a ceremonyof colors with a happy amalgamationof the changing nature and the many moods of the the Bhutanese culture. The highlight of the Thimpu. Tsechu showcases of ethnic folk dance in the famous Tashichho Dzong in Thimpu. The court yard of this Dzong is the platform for the performance that is marked by traditionally designed colorful marks. Starting above Thimphu, our fabulous trek takes us to some mesmerizing high altitude lakes. This six day trek follows a little used route. Though the highest camp is 14,104ft/4300m from sea level, the route takes us up to a lofty 15,416ft/4700m, from where you have a mesmerising view of the mountains. Myanmar is an all year round destination. Hilly regions in the north and northeast enjoy cool temperate weather. Rainfall is also very low in central regions the rainy season.

Myanmar lies on the crossroad of two of the world's great civilizations - China and India but its culture is neither that of India nor that of China exclusively, but a blend of both interspersed with Myanmar native traits and characteristics. Buddhism has great influence on daily life of the Myanmar. The people have preserved the traditions of close family ties, respect for the elders, reverence for Buddhism and simple native dress. Myanmars are contented and cheerful even in the face of adversities and known for their simple hospitality and friendliness.

Chin State consisted of two districts in the North and South. Nat Ma Taung, Thuamvum, Mount Victoria, is the highest peak in Chin State. Many natural watercourses flow among mountain ranges running from north to south forming a number of valleys and gorges. The state has a lot of rivers and the Manipur River flows through its northern half. The Tayawbar River forms much of the border with India for the northern half of the state. The Boynu River, as the Kaladan River is known upstream from its confluence with the Tayawbar, forms the border with India for the central portion of the state. In the southwestern part of the state, the Kaladan River enters from India and flows down past Paletwa and exits into Rakhine State. The longest water fall in Chin state is the Bungtla Waterfall near Matupi..

Embark at Shwe Kyet Yet or Sagaing Jetty (Laykyunt Manaung) by 10am. Set sail and visit the spectacular potteries near Kyauk-myoung where the famous 50-gallon water pots are handmade. We see all stages of manufacture from the throwing of the pots to the weeklong firing in huge kilns. We return to the ship and enter the third defile of Irrawaddy.

One of the rivers of Myanmar, Irrawaddy, flows 2000km and begins and ends within one country, giving it life, witnessing its history bringing together the people of the far north to the southerners living in delta lands. TRIP CC-INDN-BW 101 A HISTORIC JOURNEY INTO MYANMAR, AND ENCOUNTERS WITH THE NAGA TRIBES OF BURMA AND NORTH EAST INDIA THE NAGA TRIBES (MYANMAR): There are estimated more than 150,000 Nagas, comprising of 12 major tribes and many sub-tribes, dwelling in Myanmar. Similarly across the Indian border the Konyak tribes of Nagas living in MON District,have their biggest village LONGWA lyng on the international boundary and its Chief’ (Angh,s) house is half in India and half in Myanmar. Local’s can cross from one side to the other without any custom – checks. They also join in each other’s festivals.

Imphal (Manipur) is a cultural capital of North East India. We arrange special cultural performance by Meities and other local tribes, we are getting this Manipuri Cultural Extravaganza specially arranged for you to showcase the finer aspects of this culture... and you should find it very interesting. After the cultural show, a photographic session with the artists dressed in their special artistic costumes has also been arranged for you.

In KOHIMA itself, whilst visiting the HORNBILL VILLAGE, we would be able to see typical village huts of all 16 Naga tribes living in NAGALAND and Border areas. We get a good idea as to how they all live. Their staple food is rice, generally cooked with meat or vegetables. They are fond of beef, pork, chicken, dogs, cats almost any living thing! Chillies are used in good quantity; milk is only now becoming popular. Rice Beer is produced locally and drunk by everyone. Salt is only now available.

Naga villages were built on hilltops, a defensive strategy against inter village rivalries, and are fortified with stonewalls, bamboo spikes and wooden gates. The ‘village always came first’ and the society was so organised that the basic requirements of food, clothing and shelter are guaranteed to all the members. There are no absentee landlords, and no class of landless peasents.

TRIP CC-INDN-BW 062 ISLAND HOPPING IN AZURE WATERS-MYANMAR AND SIAM “THAILAND" The eight hundred uninhabited tropical islands of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar, are home to our unique Myanmar Island Safari. Closed to the outside world for over fifty years, this wild and remote region of Southeast Asia has only recently become accessible to the outside world. We operate a tented camp giving us access to the islands, and providing our guests the chance to discover the secret beauty of these wild and remote islands of the Mergui Archipelago.

The location of our camp is outstanding, and based on Wa Ale Kyunn, a large jungle-clad island, located to the west of Lampi Kyunn National Park.

Situated deep in the heart of the Archipelago, seventy miles from civilization, it is uninhabited except for our own small presence, with no unwanted disturbances from the outside world. Instead of electric lighting, there are gas-lights and candles, which are quite adequate and give a very romantic feel.

We have engaged with several Moken tribal families to help us with our Myanmar island safari. As part of our itinerary, you will have time to spend with them and travel on their boats. We will also schedule time for them to teach you their fishing techniques and semi-nomadic way of life.

One of its hallmarks is its commitment to the preservation of the great outdoors, which has been integral to the company’s operations as a pioneering adventure company.

This commitment to the preservation of nature has been enshrined in the charter Articles & Memorandum of Association of the Company, unlike others where this commitment is secondary to the Articles & Memorandum and not an afterthought!

Infact, operating adventures in unique habitats, ensured that the company’s very raison detre was at a critical level, the preservation of nature. It was this that led to the Environmental Fellowship in 1994 and the BCN (Bio Diversity Convservation Award) in 1995 (details on our website).

Since then, such innovative programs as retraining where poachers became wildlife or angling guides, school education programs teaching children about rural health, entymology, herpetology and similar programs have been planned, developed and delivered in different locations.

Currently one of the company’s focus areas is the establishment of “ Bio Diversity Earth Stations “, in fragile eco system hotspots in India and also to consult in other territories.

Subsequent to the grants awarded in the mid 90’s the company has self funded entirely these conservation, reforestation and sustainability planning and education initiatives, completely on its own.

In July 2014 the Managing Director, IJ Singh worked with the Indian Institute of Directors during a convention on CSR & Sustainability, to bring important persepctives from his own experience to the subject of “Environmental Sustainability Through Green Growth Solutions”. This has resulted in an array of new initiatives designated to be pursued over the coming years, including offering expertise to big industrial houses in mega projects such as hydel dams and such and who are unaware or otherwise unprepared to ensure such features as fish ladders, or the preservation of riverine ecology when planning inter linking of rivers and other hugely impactful initiatives.

During the course of the coming year, we will be offering patrons, the opportunity to visit unique conservation projects in different parts of the world. Please enquire about these.

Document update version overriding all others This document comprises five pages General Terms and Conditions Itineraries, Travel conditions, Accommodations: while it is our endeavor to give you an accurate itinerary of the trip, well in advance, it must be remembered that these are subject to revision, for reasons such as weather, Government restrictions, flight, train timings or other reasons, which maybe imposed suddenly , and force majeure beyond our control.

Even routes may have to be changed at the last minute, resulting in adjustments being made to the itinerary.

Unexplained changes of programme, diversions, and poor estimates of times and distances are possible especially but not necessarily only in remote environments. Extra costs that may result in such conditions will have to be accepted and borne by PAX (traveller) and you are expected to have adequate travel and travel related insurance along with medical and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance coverage to home destination.

Road conditions in certain areas may NOT always be good, and to cover the distances involved, hours on the road do tend to become long . But frequent comfort halts are provided while on the move.

Accommodation: Although every effort will be made to provide single accommodation to Pax who make the request and pay the single supplement, it must be remembered that at some places it may not be possible to provide single accommodation (In the event single accommodation is not feasible at a particular location no refund will be possible out of the single supplement).

When rooms have to be shared, every effort to find a same gender room sharer.

Lady/female Travellers: Every effort will be made to keep the trip as a ‘woman-friendly’ trip at all times while bearing in mind that one may be entering an environment which is conservative old fashioned, or overly patriarchal Electricity: Breakdowns are not unusual, so do carry a good flashlight and night-reading headlamps.

Water: Bottled water is available in most places even while the problem of disposing off plastic waste is a challenge we are greatly concerned about. For off road trips, it is still recommended that you carry iodine solution or tablets to purify your drinking water, or use water filter, just in case of an emergency. Do not brush your teeth with tap water when in remote areas or houseboats. Do not use ice cubes in your drinks. Bottled water may have to be got at your own cost.

Medical: Limited medical facilities are available in places and this must be duly noted before applying for the trip. You must consult your Doctor for anti-malaria, hepatitis or other tropical disease precautions which should be observed; Please carry insect repellents (not applicable in the Himalaya). If you have medical and health conditions, you must inform us well in advance of your date of departure.

Food Extra special attention is always paid to your food, to see that it is hygienically prepared and is palatable for our Western clientele. Alcohol and wines are not available in remote areas and you may wish to carry your stocks. The state of Gujarat is a dry state.

Baggage-AIR Checked Baggage per PAX; max wt 44 pounds is permitted by Airlines normally. Please note that on some of the Internal Flts, the Airlines do NOT carry more than 15kg baggage per PAX. You may have to pay for extra baggage. Please check your tickets.

Photography: Although people are friendly otherwise, some do NOT like to have their pictures taken. Please ask our guides BEFORE you start taking pictures. In case he/she advises, NOT to, please accept the same without asking for explanations.
