The company consists of two corporate entities under one brand name: • TigerPaw Adventures India Pvt Ltd, established in India in 1982 • TigerPaw India Adventures Ltd, established in Canada in 1995 TigerPaws Canada and TigerPaws India promote each other’s activities, and also run specialist trips to other international destinations, including Africa and, in particular, South Africa.

TigerPaws specialist repertoire and wide ranging thematic itineraries have been assembled as a result of our many years of experience in India. TigerPaws excels in custom made holidays and travel experiences, and we work with individuals, groups and multinational corporate clients like the American Embassy School and Germany’s SPD Reisen.

TigerPaws also owns and operates the Spashram Rivermountain Retreat, an outdoor adventure and wellness retreat on the banks of the Upper Ganges. The Spashram brand also offers international afficianados the opportunity to visit India and learn about Ayurveda and Yoga.

Since its inception, Tiger Paw has been a pioneering force in Indian adventure travel, initiating more than one trend and celebrating many significant accomplishments throughout the years, from first descent expeditions on Himalayan rivers, to sustainability planning and earning eco-tourism awards. Our commitment to eco-tourism secured the prestigious BCN Award for Biodiversity Conservation in the Eastern Himalayas (BCN Washington D.C. USA 1995). Additionally, Tiger Paw was amongst the first five Indian companies to receive the Environmental Fellowship, awarded by the Asia Foundation, San Francisco, USA 1994.

Key Clientele TigerPaws has conducted travel programs for Canadian travellers, as well as large corporate clients like Griffiths Laboratories Canada. In India, clientele have included American Express and HSBC, as well as various regiments of the British Army and Royal Air Force.

Between the two zones, special encounters with the royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephant and regional bird life await. TRIP BW-WL 056 THE TEMPLES & TIGERS OF CENTRAL INDIA, AND WILDLIFE OF NORTH EAST INDIA Abundant wildlife fills India’s sanctuaries and national parks, which are located in the different states, including several of note in the central region or heartland of India.

Madhya Pradesh, right in the heart of central India, is the second largest state of India in terms of its size. Blessed with thick green forests and a large variety of wildlife, Madhya Pradesh is nature's trough. Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks are world famous national parks. The king of the forest may be easily sighted at Kanha and Bandhavgarh. The Gaur is equally at home in the jungles of Kanha and Bandhavgarh, and does not fear the tiger.

Dampa Wild Life Sanctuary, a Project Tiger Reserve, is situated at the western part of Mizoram along the international border with Bangladesh, and is 127 Km from the capital of Aizawl.

Dampa consists of moist deciduous forest at lower reaches, and evergreen and semi-evergreen forests with natural grassland at higher altitudes. It is the largest sanctuary of Mizoram, notified in 1985 and covering an area of 500 Sq. km. It became a Project Tiger in 1994. The list of animals found in the area include Tiger, Sloth, Bear, Leopard, Elephants, Sambar, Barking Deer, Hoolock Gibbon, Giant Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Wild Dog, Wild Pig, Porcupine, Slow Loris, Gaur, Leaf Monkey, Capped Langur, Rhesus Macaque, and some species of small cats.

At least 215 varieties of birds have been recorded here, and an ardent birder is likely to find more.

Central India attracts large numbers of wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and ornithologists from different parts of the world. Wildlife in Central India includes tigers, monkeys, deer, leopards, elephants, squirrels, and diverse species of birds and marine life. The wildlife sanctuaries in the central region of the country offer various scopes of discovering the rich and varied flora and fauna.

Bandhavgarh National Park, located in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the best and most beautiful tiger reserves in all of India. It is located in the picturesque surroundings of the eastern edge of the Satpura and Vindhya hill ranges. In the year 1968, Bandhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary was notified as a National Park. Further, in 1993, it was included in the renowned Project Tiger in India.

Kanha National Park is also popular for its Tigers, and is also home to some endangered species like Barasinghas (Swamp Deer). Recent surveys show that the total tiger population in this reserve is close to 70-75 percent of the total population in the country.

TRIP BW-WL 058 WILDLIFE OF SOUTHERN INDIA, AND ISLAND HOLIDAY IN THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS Andaman: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the emeralds of the Bay of Bengal, were shrouded in mystery for centuries because of their inaccessibility. They are a paragon of beauty and present a landscape of picturesque splendor. Dense forests cover these islands. Innumerable exotic fish, flowers and birds enhance a most colorful backdrop, and white beaches on the edge of the meandering coastline boasts palm trees that sway to the rhythm of the sea.

During the British Raj, India’s revolutionaries (considered too dangerous to the interests of the Raj) and other dreaded criminals were deported from the mainland to the Cellular Jail, an Indian Gulag, situated on the sea coast of Atlanta Point in the North-Eastern part of Port Blair.

These islands became infamously known as the ‘Black Water Prison’ or ‘Kala Pani’.

The following itinerary explores the richest vein of biodiversity in the heart of India. In the south, the tropical green will be in contrast to the dry forests of the north, experiencing summer.

Bharatpur, one of Asia’s most outstanding wetland reserves, along with a productive stretch of the perennial Chambal River and semi-desert of Ranthambhore, provides an excellent introduction to the resident and migratory birds of the north Indian plains.

Kaziranga National Park: The trip features the famous Kaziranga National Park, first discovered

by Lord Curzon in 1904. We take an elephant safari through difficult terrain where jeeps cannot venture. Two-thirds of the world’s Great One-horned Rhinoceroses live in the park, and Kaziranga has the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world. The park also has large breeding populations of elephants, water buffalo and swamp deer. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high-species diversity and visibility.

Manas National Park: The only Tiger Project in Assam, Manas is situated on the bank of the river Manas at the foothills of the Himalayas, and is one of India’s most magnificent National Parks.

It is a well-known World heritage site with its unique combination of scenic beauty and rare wealth of wildlife.

Covering an area of 519.77 Sq. Kms, Manas has a core area of 360 Kms and is situated in Barpeta District. Manas is one of the nine tiger reserve sanctuaries in India, but tigers are not the only wildlife found here. ASSAM CRUISES, BRAHMAPUTRA. Abundant wildlife and frontier wilderness are the main features of a cruise in Assam on the vast Brahmaputra River, in the Northeast. The Son of Bhrama, from where the river takes its name, is often 20 or 30 km across. TRIP CEX-NF-RJ 010 RAJASTHAN’S BANESHWAR TRIBAL FAIR AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE FOREST AND NOMADIC TRIBES OF WESTERN INDIA The famed Baneshwar Fair (organized each year around January-February) is held at a small delta formed by the River Som and Mahi in Dungarpur District, from Magh Shukla Ekadashi to Magh Shukla Poornima. The name Baneshwar is derived from the Shiva Linga in the Mahadev temple of Dungarpur, Rajasthan, and the majority of those attending are Bhils, members of a tribal community comprised of Dungarpur, Udaipur and Banswara natives.

The pran-pratishtha ceremony of the idols to the temple was performed on Magh Shukla Ekadashi, and each year is celebrated through this auspicious event. Other celebrations of the Baneshwar Fair include magic shows, folk dances, acrobatic feats and animal shows.

The Baneshwar Fair is actually a combination of two events: one organised to pay tribute to the Lord Shiva, known as Baneshwar Mahadev, and the other to celebrate the completion of the construction work for the Vishnu temple by Jankunwar, daughter-in-law of Saint Mavji. The priest, or Mathadish, arrives in a massive procession from Sabha and takes a dip into the river.

The Aarti of the Mathadish is performed, and at night Raslila are reenacted in the Lakshmi Narayana temple.

TRIP CEX-NF-RJ 011 RAJASTHAN’s BANESHWAR TRIBAL FAIR WITH THE GOLDEN TEMPLE OF THE SIKHS - AMRITSAR The famed Baneshwar Fair (organized each year in January-February) is held at a small delta formed by the River Som and Mahi in Dungarpur District, from Magh Shukla Ekadashi to Magh Shukla Poornima. The name Baneshwar is derived from the Shiva Linga in the Mahadev temple of Dungarpur, Rajasthan, and the majority of those attending are Bhils, members of a tribal community comprised of Dungarpur, Udaipur and Banswara natives. During this Fair, the temple of Mahadev remains open from 5am to 11pm. The morning begins with the bathing of the Shiva Linga, after which saffron is applied and an Aarti is performed with burning incense.

In the evening, ash is applied to the Linga and an Aarti is performed again, this time with a wick lamp. The night is livened up with Bhils singing traditional folk songs around a bonfire. Devotees also make offerings of pulses, rice, wheat flour, salt, Jaggery, ghee, chilies, coconut, cash, etc at the temple.

THE GOLDEN TEMPLE OF THE SIKHS: The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir (or Darbar) Sahib, was the inspiration of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Sikh Guru, in keeping with Sikh the pir to lay the foundation of Darbar Sahib in January, 1588. Characterised by its unique entrance doors facing all your directions of the compass, the Golden Temple welcomes everyone regardless of religion or faith, and services langar (free food) throughout the day. The sunning sanctum, shimmering in the water of the holy tank (sarovar), flanked by spotlessly clean marble walkways, makes it breathtakingly beautiful.

TRIP P-BW-AEF-NE 016 NAGALAND’S HORNBILL FESTIVAL The Hornbill Festival, held each year in the first week of December, shows the stunning natural beauty and great cultural traditions of Nagaland, and offers a unique experience to tourists.

NAGALAND, with its diverse tribal culture, is a land of festivals. A narrow strip of mountainous territory with rugged hills, emerald valleys, sparkling streams and a rich variety of flora and fauna, the 16th State of the Indian Union has a salubrious climate throughout the year. Bounded by Assam in the west, Myanmar in the east, Arunachal Pradesh in the north, and Manipur in the south, it is sometimes referred to as the Switzerland of the East. Nagaland features unimaginable beauty, moulded perfectly for a breathtaking experience.

The least explored and arguably most beautiful region of India, this narrow northeast stretch of land between Bhutan and Bangladesh was all but sealed off from the outside world until relatively recently. Konyak Nagas celebrate the arrival of spring with the Aoling Festival, which stretches for six days during in the first week of April each year. This is also the Konyak New Year. During Aoling, the Konyaks perform many different rituals, including animal sacrifices, agricultural related activities, dancing and feasting, with one day dedicated to cleaning the houses and village.

Imphal (Manipur) is a cultural capital of Northeast India. Two nights were not enough to enjoy the natural beauty of Spashram and surrounding areas. Staying in tents you are never far away from the sounds of the river, the birds and other wildlife. Yoga on the beach was memorable for me and after two days of sampling the natural spring water, local organic food and fresh clean air, I felt completely rejuvenated. For the more active, you can experience rock climbing, hiking or river-rafting.

TRIP SPT 041 EXPLORING INDIA’S BUDDHIST HERITAGE SITES AND THE SPIRITUAL CITY OF VARANASI In the ancient text of the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, the Buddha informs his followers that to attain merit and noble rebirth, they should undertake a pilgrimage to this birthplace (Lumbini), where he also gained enlightenment (Bodhgaya), first taught (Sarnath) and attained Nirvana (Kushinagar).

Lumbini: Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini (southern Nepal), a short distance from the Shakya capital of Kapilavastu. Pilgrimages focus on the sacred garden, which contains the site of the birth, the Mayadevi Temple, the Pashkarni Pond, and the Ashoka Pillar.

Bodhgaya: It was in Bodhgaya in Bihar, India that Prince Siddhartha found Enlightenment (nirvana) under the bodhi tree, after meditating for 49 days. No longer a bodhisattva (mentor), he became Lord Buddha, the Enlightened One. Sarnath: Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, about 10 km from the ancient holy city of Varanasi, after achieving enlightenment. It was here that the Buddha established his first disciples (sangha) to promote the new doctrine. The splendid Dhamekha Stupa at Sarnath was originally erected by King Ashoka, as was the famous lion capital pillar, now the proud symbol of India.

Kushinagar: At Kushinagar, Lord Buddha fell ill and left this world in 543 BC. His mortal remains were preserved in eight commemorative chortens, and then further distributed by King Ashoka into 84,000 stupas across his kingdom and beyond.

TTRIP CEX-NF-MP-GJ 013 THE ELOPEMENT FESTIVAL BHAGORIA IN CENTRAL INDIA AND GUJARAT’S BHAVNATH FAIR The Bhavnath Festival honours Lord Shiva, the third God of the Hindu Triad (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv). The Bhavnath Mahadev Temple is a shrine ensconced in myths and legends of the ancient (Puranic) era. The Fair itself is so ancient, that its precise origins are unknown.

Like any other Indian Mela, you will see people in their traditional colourful dresses, enjoying themselves. Another novelty is Naga bavas / Sadhus, as one sees them in Kumbh Mela.

The Bhagoria is a Festival of Love (and elopement), where tribes of Central India celebrate the annual crop yield after the winter harvest season comes to an end. The onset of spring and approaching Holi (Festival of Colors) is a time for everyone to celebrate. BHAGORIA is a riotous celebration of life and love, marked by music, dance and a riot of colour.

TRIP CEX-NF 014 THE UNITED COLORS OF INDIA - HOLI, THE FESTIVAL OF COLOURS One of the major festivals of India, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun, during March, as per Gregorian calendar. Holi Festival may be called by various names, and celebrated with different traditions in different states, but the spirit remains the same throughout the country, and even across the globe, wherever it is celebrated.

The Festival of Holi, the Festival of Colours, unifies much of Hindu India in the north. It is the celebration of spring and harvest, and a time when ancient customs and the rigidity of daily tradition is abandoned. While the Festival of Holi is full of riotous color in many places, the commemoration at Vrindavan is particularly enchanting.

People from all corners of India, indeed the world, gather at Mathura-Vrindavan every year to feel the essence of Holi in the land of Krishna. The underlying feeling of this fun frolic was love and devotion, and even today, the very atmosphere in the Krishna-nagari exudes romance.

TRIP CEX-NF-PB 017 HOLA MOHALLA–PUNJAB’S FESTIVAL OF COLORS Hola Mohalla, an annual Sikh festival, is celebrated extensively over three days, mainly at the Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara, in the state of Punjab. It is a martial fair that was introduced by Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, to fortify the Sikh community by carrying out martial training and mock-drills, along with religious discussions.

The festivities of Hola Mohalla begin by visiting the gurudwaras for early morning prayers.

Durbars are held, and the Guru Granth Sahib is read. Kirtans and religious lectures are carried out, and the ‘prasad’ is distributed among the people after the religious ceremonies are over.

The evening is filled with a lot of anticipation and thrill, as martial members of the Sikh community (Nihang Sikhs) display their physical strength through daring acts like mock-battles (Gatka), sword-fighting displays, archery, and exercising on speeding horses. They also splatter colours on the audience, followed by cultural activities like music, dance and poetry programs, and competitions to unwind the charged atmosphere. A procession is set out on the last day, and the Panj Pyaras walk in front, crossing all the major gurudwaras in that area. Hola Mohalla is the time to celebrate and dedicate oneself to community service. ‘Langars’ are organised, and local people come forward to help by arranging raw materials for the langar, cleaning the gurudwaras, and washing the dishes.

Ajanta and nearby Ellora caves, located in the Maharashtra about 300 kilometers from Mumbai, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among the most fascinating archaeological monuments in India.

The 29 Ajanta Caves of Aurangabad constitute ancient monasteries and worship halls of different Buddhist traditions, carved into a 250 foot wall of rock, dating from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. According to UNESCO, these masterpieces of Buddhist religious art influenced Indian art that followed.

Ellora is one of the largest rock-cut monastery-temple caves complexes in the world, and presents monuments and artwork of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism from the 600-1000 CE period. Cave 16 of Ellora features the largest single monolithic rock excavation in the world, the Kailasha Temple, a chariot shaped monument dedicated to Shiva. The Kailasha Temple excavation also presents the gods, goddesses and mythologies found in Vaishnavism, Shaktism and relief panels summarizing the two major Hindu Epics. The site features over 100 caves, 34 of which are open to public.

TRIP PHL-CLT-ADC-TR 033 CEO’s CHALLENGE - LADAKH HIMALAYA WALKING THE CHADAR - THE ICE WALK ON THE FROZEN ZANSKAR Walking on the frozen Zanskar river is an experience of a lifetime for adventure lovers. The traditional name “Chadar “ or “sheet” refers to the frozen pathway, which was the only way in and out for Zanskaris in winter, when all other routes are closed due to heavy snow.

A trade route for centuries, it is renowned among adventurers for winter trekking. Using trained local Zanskari porters and experienced guides, we are able to see Ladakh’s least interfered with microcosms, and thus one of the last few surviving cultural satellites of Tibet.

Geographical isolation and the esoteric nature of Buddhism practiced here, have enabled some ten thousand inhabitants to preserve and perpetuate their cultural identity. The Chadar trek allows visitors to briefly penetrate this isolation, and experience some of the villages along the Zanskar River in the midst of winter. A visit to the ancient monastic establishments of Karsha and Zangla provides a glimpse of what lies behind the Zanskar Mountains, or the Inner Himalaya. Chilling and Lingshed are the only sizeable villages on this trek, until we reach Hanamur and Pidmo, prior to Pishu and Zangla, in Zanskar.

Popularly known as the Devbhumi (Land of the Gods), Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful hill state in India, nestled in northwest region of western Himalayas. The state is landlocked with the Tibetan plateau to the east, Jammu and Kashmir to the north, and the Punjab to the west. The British established the oldest town of Arunachal Pradesh, Pasighat in 1911. The town is situated on the banks of the River Siang and is a photographer’s delight. The colder waters of the higher reaches of Arunachal are teeming with golden and rainbow trout, and anglers can easily enjoy the traditional but effective methods of fishing, while trekking in the jungles of Arunachal.

In winter, the larger rivers like, Sindh, Lidder, Erin, Ferozpur, Aharbal, Doodh Ganga, Daksum, Noobug, Ahlan, Krishen Ganga and Hirpur, are covered with snow, which starts melting between May and July. Among the best spring fed streams for trout fishing are Kokernag, Verinag and Sukhnag. There are over 61 beats open for anglers throughout the season.

The Lidder River runs through the Pahalgam in a rushing grey-green torrent, foam-flecked and breaking in curling waves against the boulders in its path. Its sound is as eternal as the whisper of wind through pine and fir, its force primaeval, its splendour untamed.

Pahalgam spreads along the banks of the Lidder, the focal point of interest to the angler.

The trout fisherman’s delight, the Lidder is divided into three fishing beats between Mattan and Pahalgam, and the trout are so thick that even the novice can land a good catch.

Sonamarg (situated just before the Zojii La Pass at a hefty altitude of 2,740 m above sea level), literally means ‘Meadow of Gold’, and takes its name from the picturesque natural beauty of the region. Surrounded by breathtaking glaciers, serene lakes, and beautiful flower-laden meadows in the majestic Himalayan mountain region, Sonamarg is the gateway to Ladakh.

Approximately 125 km west of Leh, on a spectacularly beautiful road, sits the earliest surviving monastery of Ladakh, known as Yung-drung or the Swastika. The Gompa is built on sandstone and dates to the 11th Century. The monastery has a remarkable history, and the surrounding area presents an interesting topography spread with yellow loess formation. The Alchi Monastery, 69 km west of Leh, is the most famous and largest of all the Gompa built by Rinchen Zangpo in 11th Century. It houses some of the best murals and frescoes representing the Kashmiri style of Buddhist iconography. Each monastery in Ladakh offers its own distinct experience.

The trek is challenging, due to the extreme high altitude, rarified atmosphere and strong sun with high UV factor. We keep a slow and measured pace to trek 4-5 hour walking sections before entering camp each evening (a detailed orientation on the trek and the routine is provided separately). TRIP ADV-HT 037 SANDAKPHU – PHALUT SINGALILA RIDGE TREK Sandakphu, located at an altitude of 3,636 meters (11,929 ft) on the northwest of a Darjeeling hill town, is a wonderland for the trekkers. The summit of the Singalila range, it is also the highest peak in the state of West Bengal, India. The trek to Sandakphu goes all along the Singalila range.

See four of the five highest peaks of the world (Mt. Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and Lhotse), along with many other peaks of Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet and Bhutan, in one single stretch of snow. Walk through forests of numerous types of flowering rhododendrons, giant magnolias, spruce and wide range of amazing orchids. There are over 600 varieties of orchids in this area, the largest concentration in any single geographical zone in the world, and you can see them bloom in spring.

All the way to the summit, the trek route passes through Singalila National Park, home to some fascinating, rare animals like Red Pandas and Pangolins. .

TRIP TR-UK- 202 TREK TO THE SOURCE OF THE GANGES AND SHIVLING PEAK VIA GAUMUKH (THE COW’S MOUNT) GLACIER, VASUKI TAL LAKE, TAPOVAN AND NANDANVAN Mythology has it that the Holy River Ganges, the most sacred river in the Hindu religion, originates at Gaumukh (the Cow’s mouth), at the snout of the 30 km long Gangotri glacier. The glacier is surrounded by the Gangotri group of mountains and its notoriously challenging peaks (including Shivling, Thalay Sagar, Meru and Bhagirathi III). The glacier follows a northwesterly route located below Chaukhamba Mountain, the highest peak of the group. Gaumukh is one of the holiest places for Hindu pilgrims, who visit to witness the birth of Mother Ganga. The trek also visits the base of Mt. Shivling 6,543 m (21,467 ft).

The trek also affords unique insight into Hindu culture and the spiritual beliefs of India’s major faith.

TRIP TR-UK 205 VALLEY OF FLOWERS & HEMKUND TREK: AN OUTDOOR AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN THE GARHWAL HIMALAYA Of all the Himalayan flower valleys, nothing compares to Garhwal’s unique rock garden, the famed Valley of Flowers. According to legends, this spot has been associated spiritually with the name of ‘Hanuman’, the legendary hero of the great Indian epic Ramayana.

Full of the most fascinating, fabulous, rich variety of flowering herbs, the Valley of Flowers was first bought to the limelight in 1931, when British naturalist and mountaineer Frank Smythe stumbled upon it by chance after scaling Kamet Peak. He later explored the valley extensively, assisted by England’s eminent botanist R. L. Holdsworth. Now, to restore the natural balance and conserve this natural heritage, the Valley of Flowers and its environs have been declared as Pushpavati National Park.

In 1939, botanist Margarate Legge was commissioned by the botanical gardens of Edinburgh to study the Valley of Flowers. Unfortunately, she lost her life while collecting flowers on the rocky slopes. A memorial marks her grave, and the Valley is linked with her memory to this day.

This trip also explores Hemkund, one of the most dramatic high altitude Himalayan lakes in the region.

TRIP TR-UK-206 THE TREK OVER THE KUARI PASS OR LORD CURZON’S TRAIL-INDIA’S GARHWAL HIMALAYA This Himalayan trek follows the Curzon Trail, crossing the 4,268 m Kauri pass in the Garhwal Himalayas near the Alakananda River Valley. En route, er see vestiges of Hindu culture, the panoramic meadow, and the glacial high country of this wonderful area. Confluences of several rivers (the Pinder, Kaliganga, Nandakini, Birehiganga & Dhauli Ganga) make up the Pancha – Prayag, namely Devprayag, Karnaprayag, Devprayag and Rudraprayag.

The trek proceeds through small remote Himalayan villages, and walking along the Curzon trail is a great way to get acquainted with the life of mountain folks. In fall, trees are ablaze in the yellow-orange colors of autumn, striking a deep contrast to the blue-brown mountains and snow caps. The trek meanders through gorgeous jungles of oak and deodar trees, home to all manner of wildlife, from leopards and Himalayan black bears, to abundant Rhododendron trees, which bear flowers of a fiery red color.

This trek starts at Tapoban, from which the entire range of Nanda Devi sanctuary is visible. On days two and three, there are tremendous views on the way to Chtrakantha. On day three, we ascend the KAURI Pass and take in beautiful views of the imposing peaks Nanda Devi (7816 m) and Nanda Devi East (7434 m).

A truly rejuvenating leg of the trek occurs walking through the luxurious Himalayan meadows (called ‘Bugyals’ in the local tongue), the beauty and serenity of which is an experience to behold. The most remarkable meadow is the vast undulating green pastureland, GorsonBugyal.

Galloping through the desert on a Marwari is an experience only to be had in Rajasthan, but its hard to say if I enjoyed the Polo ponies on the Dhoondwar ride or Marwaris from Dundlod more... riding through villages where time has stood still since the 15th century –women on their looms weaving carpets, children following as we made our way to the palace - turned - hotel with grooms wating to receive our horses. The hospitality was beyond courteous and I corrected the critics when I found I had “gained” weight on a trip to India!

TRIP LCT-020 EQUESTRIAN CLINIC FOR BEGINNERS Accomplishment in equestrian sport requires a degree of awareness and coordination, for the horse is a complex and sensitive animal capable of performing great feats. Highly developed countries are advanced in equestrian management and equitation, and it is no wonder that American General George Patton undertook to rescue the famous Lipizzaner Horses during WW2. To this day, the celebrated Spanish School of Riding in Vienna, Austria showcases the graceful maneuvers for which the Lipizzaner horses are renowned.

Working with horses involves perseverance, endurance, training, responsibility, compassion and awareness to avoid injury. Some of the most famous schools in the world make riding a key part of their curriculum. India’s most famous school, Mayo College, is known for its century old tradition of equitation. Recently, in the Netherlands, new structures were created to integrate a school into a large equitation center, so students have easy access to learning this sport. Rugby School in England, established in the 1700’s, and many schools in US, Germany, France and New Zealand also incorporate riding programs.

TRIP CC-INDN-AD-TR 030 THE DRAGON KINGDOM OF BHUTAN Bhutan, the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’, was isolated and almost unknown to the modern world in the annals of twentieth century history. Coupled with its unique culture and topography, this makes it special and enchanting. To preserve its culture and natural beauty, the country takes cautious measures to ensure progress does not cause irreversible damage to its eco-system. The Bhutan Himalaya extend up to 340 km, and Bhutan’ demonstrates how to balance ancient culture with Himalayan range.

Part of Bhutan’s cultural magic is reflected in its festivals, known as the Tshechus. They have a slow and ancient rhythm and cadence and the dresses, masked dances and music take us back in time. Thimphu Tsechu is one of the biggest festivals in the capital. Celebrated annually in autumn for a period of 3-4 days, this festival is a ceremony of colors with a happy amalgamation of the changing nature and the many moods of Bhutanese culture. A highlight of the festival is a showcase of ethnic folk dance in the famous Tashichho Dzong in Thimpu.

Starting above Thimphu, our fabulous 6-day trek (rated medium difficulty) takes us to some mesmerizing high altitude lakes, following a little used route.

TRIP CC-INDN-BW-AEF 018 MYANMAR DISCOVERY AND INSIGHT Myanmar, a republic in South-East Asia, is bounded on the north by Tibet Autonomous Region of China; on the east by China, Laos, and Thailand; on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal; and on the west by the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, and India. Officially known as the Union of Myanmar, it is a year round destination. Hilly regions in the north and northeast enjoy cool, temperate weather, and rainfall is low in central regions during the rainy season.

Myanmar lies on the crossroad of two of the world’s great civilizations, China and India. Its culture is a blend of both, interspersed with Myanmar native traits and characteristics. Buddhism has great influence on daily life, and traditions of close family ties, respect for the elders, reverence for Buddhism and simple native dress are followed. Myanmars are content and cheerful, even in the face of adversity, and known for their simple hospitality and friendliness.

Chin State consisted of two districts in the North and South, and Nat Ma Taung, Thuamvum, Mount Victoria, is the highest peak in Chin State. Many natural watercourses flow among mountain ranges, running from north to south and forming a number of valleys and gorges, and the Manipur River flows through its northern half. The Tayawbar River forms much of the border with India for the northern half of the state. The Boynu River (as the Kaladan River is known upstream from its confluence with the Tayawbar), forms the border with India for the central portion of the state. In the southwest, the Kaladan River enters from India and flows down past Paletwa, exitings into Rakhine State. The longest waterfall in Chin state is the Bungtla Waterfall near Matupi.

TRIP CC-INDN-BW-RC 048 THE UPPER IRRAWADDY CRUISE, MYANMAR Discover Mandalay and its historic sites located along the river. The journey begins or ends at the historic capital of Bagan, and stops include Ava, Amarapura, Mingun, the pottery village of Kyauk Myaung and the colonial town of Katha. Sail from Mandalay to Katha, once home to George Orwell and the setting for his novel Burmese Days, nearly 1000 miles from Rangoon. Passage through the 3rd and 2nd defiles are highlights, as are visits to enchanting local towns and delightful villages.

Embark at Shwe Kyet Yet or Sagaing Jetty (Laykyunt Manaung) by 10am. Set sail and visit the spectacular potteries near Kyauk-Myaung, famed for it’s 50-gallon, handmade water pots. We see all stages of manufacture, from the throwing of the pots to the weeklong firing in huge kilns. We return to the ship and enter the third defile of Irrawaddy.

Irrawaddy River flows 2000 km and begins and ends within one country: giving it life, witnessing its history, and bringing together people of the far north and southerners living in delta lands. The eight hundred, uninhabited tropical islands of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar are home to our unique Myanmar Island Safari. Closed to the outside world for over fifty years, this wild and remote region of Southeast Asia has only recently become accessible. We operate a tented camp, giving us access to the islands, and providing our guests the chance to discover the secret beauty of these wild and remote islands.

Our camp is based in an outstanding location on Wa Ale Kyunn, a large jungle-clad island west of Lampi Kyunn National Park. Situated deep in the heart of the Archipelago, seventy miles from civilization, it is uninhabited apart for our own small presence, with no unwanted disturbances from the outside world. As there is no electric lighting, we use gas lights and candles, which are quite adequate and provide a very romantic feel.

TRIP CC-INDN-BW 101 A HISTORIC JOURNEY INTO MYANMAR AND ENCOUNTERS WITH THE NAGA TRIBES OF BURMA AND NORTH EAST INDIA More than 150,000 Nagas, comprised of 12 major tribes and many sub-tribes, are estimated to live in Myanmar. Across the Indian border, the Konyak tribes of Nagas live in MON District. Their biggest village, LONGWA, sits on the international boundary, and the house of its Chief (Angh) is half in India and half in Myanmar. Locals can cross from one side to the other without custom checks, and they also join in each other’s festivals.

Imphal (Manipur) is a cultural capital of Northeast India. Here, we arrange a special performance

by Meities and members of other local tribes, in a lavish showcase of the finer aspects of this culture. Following the Manipuri Extravaganza, you may participate in a photographic session with the artists, dressed in their colourful attire.

You will also visit the Hornvill Village in Kohima, and see huts typical of all 16 Naga tribes living in Nagaland and the Border areas. Naga villages were built on hilltops, a defensive strategy against inter-village rivalries, and are fortified with stone walls, bamboo spikes and wooden gates. The ‘village always came first’ mantra dictates that basic requirements of food, clothing and shelter are guaranteed to all members. There are no absentee landlords, and no class of landless peasants.

The staple of the diet is rice, generally cooked with vegetables or some type of meat (beef, pork, chicken, dog, cat, indeed almost any living thing).

Chillies are used in good quantity, and milk and salt are now becoming popular. Rice Beer, produced locally, is consumed by everyone.

Dear Inder Jit, No words or photos can describe the INDIA that you brought back to life for our school group. As you know, we hit the ground running -- and for some of us, that exhilarating immersion did not end for nearly a month!! And, frankly, we didn’t want it to end ever...

The personal hospitality which you exhibited right from the start -- inviting us into your home and welcoming us with your parents and wife and beautiful daughter and of course wonderful Rohit and Juma -- meant so much to us. Your personal touch reminded us how very personal India is -- and that’s why so many of us have returned over the years.

Logistically -- both the North and South trip were flawless. When you anticipated a border problem in the south, you quickly switched us from bus to plane. All of the hotels were great -- I enjoyed being in different ones in different cities. We were certainly well fed throughout the trip, and it helped that as old Delhi wallahs, nobody got sick.

On the personnel front, our only regret was not being able to see more of you -- I bet you have already organized a trip to China -- where you will be a rock star!!

Rohit and Juma were both terrific -- going the extra mile not only to accommodate last minute changes, but also to try and get to know us. They always had a positive outlook and a ready smile -- and were always willing to engage in whatever way they could.

When our little SOUTH group learned that Rohit would not be coming with us, we were in a panic, but your system worked well and we were met by lovely and knowledgeable guides and drivers all along the route.

By now, IJ, I know you have seen it all, in terms of Ferengi behavior in India. I just hope that you know that the entire group felt VERY special in your good care -- recognizing how meaningful this return trip to Mother India was for all of us.

Please stay in touch -- and alert us when u come to the States next year. As you know, I have already recommended you & TP to friends -- but beyond the business connection, I am happy to reconnect as a friend.

Dear Inder Jit, I think Caroline has covered everything, there isn’t much more to add except to re-iterate what an amazing time we had and if I could hop on a plane right now and do it all over again I would. Road conditions in certain areas may NOT always be good, and to cover the distances involved, hours on the road do tend to become long . But frequent comfort halts are provided while on the move.

Accommodation: Although every effort will be made to provide single accommodation to Pax who make the request and pay the single supplement, it must be remembered that at some places it may not be possible to provide single accommodation (In the event single accommodation is not feasible at a particular location no refund will be possible out of the single supplement).

When rooms have to be shared, every effort to find a same gender room sharer.

Lady/female Travellers: Every effort will be made to keep the trip as a ‘woman-friendly’ trip at all times while bearing in mind that one may be entering an environment which is conservative old fashioned, or overly patriarchal Electricity: Breakdowns are not unusual, so do carry a good flashlight and night-reading headlamps.

Water: Bottled water is available in most places even while the problem of disposing off plastic waste is a challenge we are greatly concerned about. For off road trips, it is still recommended that you carry iodine solution or tablets to purify your drinking water, or use water filter, just in case of an emergency. Do not brush your teeth with tap water when in remote areas or houseboats. Do not use ice cubes in your drinks. Bottled water may have to be got at your own cost.

Medical: Limited medical facilities are available in places and this must be duly noted before applying for the trip. You must consult your Doctor for anti-malaria, hepatitis or other tropical disease precautions which should be observed; Please carry insect repellents (not applicable in the Himalaya). If you have medical and health conditions, you must inform us well in advance of your date of departure.

Food Extra special attention is always paid to your food, to see that it is hygienically prepared and is palatable for our Western clientele. Alcohol and wines are not available in remote areas and you may wish to carry your stocks. The state of Gujarat is a dry state.

Baggage-AIR Checked Baggage per PAX; max wt 44 pounds is permitted by Airlines normally. Please note that on some of the Internal Flts, the Airlines do NOT carry more than 15kg baggage per PAX. You may have to pay for extra baggage. Please check your tickets.

Photography: Although people are friendly otherwise, some do NOT like to have their pictures taken. Please ask our guides BEFORE you start taking pictures. In case he/she advises, NOT to, please accept the same without asking for explanations. This advice will vary on a case-by-case basis; and may have to be changed suddenly!

VISAS and RESTRICTED ENTRY PERMITS All visitors to INDIA must obtain a VISA which should be applied for, for a general tour like DELHI, ORISSA and other tourist places. A scanned copy of the Passport and Visa should be E-Mailed to us, as soon as the Visa is obtained.

DEPOSITS & SCHEDULE OF PAYMENTS To secure your reservation, in view of the limited infrastructure (or shortage on account of season) in the areas we will be visiting, as also the time now available, you are requested to forward the initial deposit of total 25% of tour cost (Invoiced Amount) WITH YOUR BOOKING, and which will be adjusted to your credit and be sent to us PER BANK/CARD TERMS SUPPLIED WITH OUR QUOTE. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Refunds or cancellations made by us in the event of force majeure; and compelling situations of natural disaster, travel safety, unrest of any kind or changes in Government policies, beyond our control, will entail a refund by TIGER PAWS, less actual already incurred upto the time cancellation notice is received and which element would have to be borne by the client(s) All cancellation requests from PAX, must be received by us in WRITING, and confirmed NOTED by us as such.
