Tags are available at the City Finance Office and expire on Dec. 31 of each year. Animals must be current on rabies vaccination. Building permits are required in City limits. Check with City Hall before proceeding with any construction, concrete work, remodeling, or alterations.

A PROUD PAST
1879 Lennox, South Dakota was established when the Milwaukee Railroad came through. Lennox was named after B.G. Lennox, the private secretary to S.S. Merrill, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad executive. It was known as Ben Lennox early and later shortened to Lennox.
1885 In 1885 Lennox boasted the following establishments: 4 general stores, 2 blacksmith shops, 3 saloons, 2 hotels, one harness shop, 2 boot and shoe shops, 2 implement houses, 1 livery barn, 2 hardware stores, 1 lumberyard, 1 clothing store, 2 millinery shops, 1 ball room, 1 drug store, 1 physician, 1 attorney, 2 loan agents, 3 churches, 1 school building, 1 butter packing house, an army post, and a cornet band!

PARK & REC The City of Lennox takes great pride in its park system. The parks offer activities and relaxation for people of all ages. Westerman Park, located on south Main Street, features a zero entry swimming pool, playground, picnic shelters, baseball and softball diamonds, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, a skate park, a bandshell and flower gardens. Campsites can be rented for $18 a night at Westerman Park. All campsites are electrical and a restroom/shower facility is available. Reservations may be made through the City Office (605) 647-2286.

PARK & REC West Evergreen Park, located on west Fourth Avenue, has playground equipment and a shelter. Shelters at both parks are available for family reunions, birthday parties and summer picnics. Call City Hall to reserve. There is also a Community Garden being planned near the park. At 7th Ave. and Blaine, there is a T-ball field that is utilized by young ball players in the spring and summer months. There are several activities planned for youth throughout the year. COMMUNITY LIBRARY 208 w. 5th Ave The Lennox Community Library is a joint venture with the LWC Intermediate School library. The public entrance is located on the west side of the building with parking available. The library has a separate adult reading area and computers that are available for public use. A library card is free to residents in Lennox, Chancellor and Worthing. Residents can enjoy books, tapes, videos, magazines and internet access. LENNOX SCHOOL DISTRICT 41-4 Lennox School District 41-4 serves students from the communities of Lennox, Chancellor, Worthing, and rural areas in Lincoln, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties. The District Administration Office is located in the Lennox Elementary Building. The District also features Lennox High School, LWC Junior High School, LWC Intermediate School and Lennox Elementary. One other PK-4 Elementary School is located in Worthing.

The Lennox Senior Center is located at 519 South Main Street. This very active group of people in the community enjoy fellowship, daily noon meals, special programs and fundraisers throughout the year. Daily noon meals are served Monday through Friday. Meals on Wheels provides meals to the homebound and to seniors who call in the request. The Senior Center lunch menu is printed each week in The Lennox Independent, courtesy of Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Residents can call 647-2435 to reserve a spot for the noon meal or to request meal delivery. Seniors enjoy playing Wii bowling, taking trips, playing cards and bingo, exercising and taking part in special programs. Various fundraisers during the year help support the center. The cost to join the Lennox Senior Citizen group is just $15 a year. The Senior Center is available for rent. Call 647-2435 for more information Lennox has a Community Transit program that provides an 18-passenger bus and van for those who need a ride to the clinic, doctor visits or around town. You must call ahead to schedule a ride, a week’s notice is appreciated. Call Director Gene Valentien at 496-4069.

LENNOX AREA MUSEUM
305 S Main St The City of Lennox’s rich history is preserved through the effort of the Lennox Area Historical Society and shared with the public through the Lennox Museum. Located at 305 South Main Street, the three story brick building houses many artifacts, articles, and items donated by local residents that have relevance to the Lennox area. The LAHS opens the Museum for tours upon requests. Phone numbers are posted on the museum door. There is no charge but donations are always welcome.

OLD FASHIONED 4TH OF JULY The Old Fashioned Fourth of July has become a tradition and part of the history of the City of Lennox. Thousands come in to the community to enjoy the day filled with activities from the Firecracker Road Race to the spectacular fireworks show. The event is sponsored by the Lennox Commercial Club. The festivities kick off with a Cruise Night and Street Dance prior to the July 4th activities.

OLD FASHIONED 4TH OF JULY The Old Fashioned 4th of July Parade features a performance by the Lennox Municipal Band, established in 1883. Following the parade, crowds move to Westerman Park to enjoy arts in the park, craft booths and food vendors. Youngsters will get the chance to enjoy a Kiddie Tractor Pull and avid sports fans will get a chance to see ball teams in action, with Legion baseball games often featured at the park. The day’s events finish off with a performance by the Lennox Municipal Band in the band shell and the crowd-pleasing Old Fashioned 4th of July Fireworks Show.

Lennox is home to the oldest musical organization in South Dakota — The Lennox Municipal Band. The band’s founding dates back to the spring of 1883. The Municipal Band is a group of volunteer musicians from Lennox and the surrounding area. Members of the band range in age from 12 to 80+. Local musicians are always welcome to share their talent. The group gets together to entertain at the park every Thursday night during the summer season, beginning Memorial Day and performing through Labor Day at the Jacobs Memorial Bandshell in Westerman Park. Concerts are at 8 p.m. and are free to the public. Bring your lawn chairs or blanket and come and enjoy the music.

The Lennox Area Community Fund (LACF) is an endowment fund created to benefit our communities by pooling the generosity of donors to fund grants to charitable and civic causes. Each year, several thousand dollars flow from the endowment to support the work of organizations in our schools and towns. Thanks to the generosity of community members, the funds impact continues to grow each year as their fund balance increases. 27711 SD HWY 17 The Lincoln County 4-H program is home to 10 clubs throughout the county and thrives on volunteers helping youth participate in innovative, fun programs where they can develop valuable, lifelong skills. 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. South Dakota 4-H enables youth to be engaged in partnerships with caring adults, positive learning environments, developing their fullest potential and learning life skills. 4-H is open to youth ages 8-18 years old. The Cloverbud portion of the program is open to children 5-7 years old. 4-H offers a wide variety of project areas from graphic design to foods and nutrition to rodeo to visual arts to livestock. Members can also participate in various public speaking opportunities, shooting sports and community service projects, as well as the chance to travel nationally. The Lincoln County Fairgrounds is located just outside of Lennox on Highway 17. The grounds currently house the 4-H office, as well as space for shooting sports and static exhibits during achievement days.
