A FAMILY enjoys a car ride with the kids buckled up and safe. | Supplied ZAMANDOSI CELE zamandosi.cele@inl.co.za

ROAD SAFETY TIPS for parents travelling with children MANY South Africans will be taking to the roads this holiday, making their way to friends, family or that special getaway spot. For those travelling with young children the journey can be quite challenging. While some children love being in the car, others simply hate having to sit still for any length of time. If the phrase, “Are we there yet?”, sounds familiar, consider these safety tips for a smooth and efficient ride.

BUCKLE UP Car safety is the number one priority when travelling with children with rule number one being to make sure they are buckled up. According to the South African National Road Traffic Act, all passengers under three must be restrained in a car seat suitable for their weight, height and comply with the South African National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). Arrive Alive has useful tips, guidelines and advice that are worth familiarising yourself with. Children who have outgrown a car seat may still need a booster seat, designed for children weighing about 18kg. The booster works to raise the child so that their shoulders are better aligned with the safety belt and thus more securely strapped in. Children under 14 years must be safely secured in their seats according to their weight and height. Failure to comply with these laws can result in fines and even imprisonment. Be sure to activate the child locks on the doors. ARE WE THERE YET? It’s not unusual for children to fidget and complain as they grow restless in the car. Fidgeting can lead them to figuring out how to unbuckle themselves. This can put children at a 3.5-fold increased risk for serious injuries, according to a study by Yale School of Medicine. The team found that 75% of children who self-unbuckle were aged three and under, with an age range of 12 to 78 months. It also said that unbuckling was reported as early as 12 months of age and was more common in boys than girls and of the children self-unbuckling, 43% did so while the car was in motion. Head of MiWay Blink, Keletso Mpisane, advised to always make sure that the child lock feature on your doors is on. “This does not cancel out all the safety risks as fidgeting can distract the driver. Some possible

strategies to manage children’s behaviour when travelling are letting children fidget in harmless ways, such as using squeeze balls and appropriate toys, and giving children short breaks from travelling to move around and release their energy is advisable,” said Mpisane. Use positive reinforcement and praise when children stay buckled and calm, and explain the importance of safety belts and the consequences of self-unbuckling. A JOYFUL JOURNEY Remember that the journey can be as exciting as the destination, so consider some of the tips below to keep the young ones engaged and occupied on the trip: Play games: Engage older children with chatting, word games or guessing games. The car is a great space for engaging conversation. Listen to music: Music can have a very calming effect on children. Books: Picture books are a great way to keep young children entertained, so make sure to pack a variety. Snacks: Pack a variety of wholesome snacks to keep everyone sustained – dried fruit, nuts and biltong are popular favourites. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is as important for children as it is for adults. Safety for all: Make sure to check on the condition of your car before heading out. If you’re travelling it may be worth having your car checked by a professional. Pack a fire extinguisher, small first-aid kit and drinking water. “Have a map or GPS ready and plan your route out in detail, aim to break up the journey into smaller segments and plan frequent stops at interesting places to refresh the children’s minds and to beat travel fatigue. “Children need to stretch their legs, run around, and burn off some energy,” she said.

Netcare 911 unveils crucial SUMMER SAFETY TIPS NETCARE 911 shares important safety tips to ensure the summer holidays are a time of fun, joy and relaxation. “Water, fire and the sun can be the elements of perfect summer days or a recipe for disaster – depending on how prepared we are for the potential risks,” says Sarah Kekana, Netcare 911 spokesperson. Be safe around the braai fire Spending time around a fire and outdoor cooking are especially popular this time of year. Some basic precautions are necessary to keep everyone safe and prevent burns. Make your fire safely away from anything flammable, including dry grass, leaves, overhanging trees, buildings or roofing. Keep wood, charcoal and firelighters well away from the fire – a spark can ignite materials metres away. Keep a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher at the ready. Do not use liquid fire starters. Remove any trip hazards around the fireplace. Keep children and pets at a safe distance. Do not wear flammable clothing when tending to a fire. Be aware that hot grills can cause burns, so store them safely once removed from the fire. Never leave a fire unsupervised, and always extinguish it when you have finished. Save emergency contact details, including 082 911, and be ready

The Netcare App includes a Netcare 911 60-second call back option with the Netcare App if needed Water safety Drowning can occur anywhere. It is important to constantly assess any potential risks around water, particularly where children are concerned. Never swim alone. Never swim in the sea, dams or rivers at night. Don’t swim under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult who can swim and who is not distracted. Ensure children do not have access to pools, ponds, water features, baths or even a bucket of water or an open toilet – young children can drown in just 4cm of water. Ensure your swimming pool is covered with a pool net or enclosed with a fence that is SABSapproved to prevent children from accidentally falling into the water. At the beach, only swim in designated areas with lifeguards and don’t swim far out. Swimming in the sea is very different from swimming in a pool or dam, even for experienced swimmers. Do not dive into any body of

water if you cannot see what is below the surface, and always be sure to test the depth first. Hot weather Sunburn is an ever-present danger. Parents must regularly apply high protection factor sunscreen to their children. Outdoor activities should be avoided during the hottest part of the day. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Senior citizens are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, so take special care to ensure they are kept cool and well hydrated. Antihistamines, diuretics and alcohol should be avoided if spending time in the sun. Never leave your child or pet in a parked car, even for short periods. Who are you going to call? “Make a list of emergency contact numbers, including emergency medical services such as Netcare 911 on 082 911, and stick it on the fridge and anywhere that will be quick to find. Keep the number saved on all cellphones and on a visible card near landline telephones. “It can be difficult to remember what number to call in a stressful emergency situation or to provide directions. “The emergency call and geolocation functions on the Netcare App assist in minimising response times by connecting callers and ensuring we have their precise location so the emergency vehicle can find them – even in remote areas or if the caller doesn’t know the address. “The Netcare App includes a Netcare 911 60-second call back option. The app provides detailed resource tracking, allowing the user to follow the ambulance and/ or response vehicles’ response,” Kekana concludes.

Travelling to North West, Mpumalanga or Limpopo?

There is plenty to do and see …

ZAMANDOSI CELE zamandosi.cele@inl.co.za

WHETHER you’re travelling back home or on a holiday, there are always things to see and do for a fun-filled and memorable trip. For those travelling through Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the North West, here are some beautiful spots you can use as a pit stop or for a longer stay: MPUMALANGA Self-drive the Kruger National Park The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks among the best in Africa. It is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. The self-drive safari gives you the freedom to explore the park in your own vehicle. Graskop Gorge Lift Co For adventure-seekers and naturelovers, visiting the Graskop Gorge Lift Company is a must. The lift company is centrally located on the Panorama Route. While it is an ideal stopover point, it is also an end destination in its own right, with lots to do on-site and in the area – for example taking the viewing lift 51 metres down the face of the gorge into the indigenous forest below where wooden walkways and suspension bridges make up the 600m trail. There is also a suspension bridge spanning the northern and southern sides of the gorge and you can enjoy breathtaking views of mountains. You can also get an adrenaline rush by zipline from the northern side to the

southern side of the gorge, or take the big swing – participants free-fall for 70m before the jump rope pulls them into a high-speed arch and they swing from one side of the gorge to the other. There are two restaurants on-site. Bourke’s Luck Potholes This is a must-see spot, especially when thrown in with the likes of the Three Rondawels, God’s Window, the Blyde River Canyon and numerous magnificent waterfalls. They’re the result of decades of swirling eddies of water where the Treur River meets the Blyde River, the tumult of which has caused extensive water erosion over time. The result is cylindrical rock sculptures that look as though they would be more comfortable on the moon. They are on the Panorama Route. Three Rondavels Also on the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga are the Three Rondavels. The three round mountain tops have slightly pointed tops, similar to the traditional round or oval African homesteads made with local materials called rondavels. Harry’s Pancakes Remaining on the famous Panorama Route in Graskop is Harry’s Pancake Shop, famous for its delicious sweet and savoury pancakes. The shop is a traditional stop-off for a pancake when en-route to Blyde River Canyon or exploring Graskop and Pilgrim’s Rest. Harry’s Pancake Shop is

well known and reputed to serve the best pancakes that side of the Kruger National Park. LIMPOPO Modjadjie Royal Kraal and Nature Reserve If you are exploring Limpopo, you can visit Modjadjie Royal Kraal and Nature Reserve. The 305 hectare reserve features the world’s largest concentration of a single-species cycad, the Modjadji palm. The cycad nursery, picnic sites, day trails through the forest and information centre make the reserve a highlight on any tour of the Modjadji kingdom. Visits to the Royal Kraal can also be arranged. Stay in the traditional huts of the African Ivory Route. Makgobaskloof Canopy Tours This canopy tour slides you

through forest on a 2½ hour Tarzanand-Jane-style adventure. Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours will take you into a previously inaccessible realm of nature, moving you between platforms built high within the upper level of indigenous forests and ancient mountain cliffs. Each platform is joined by the “foefie” cable slide high above the sparkling river, waterfalls and forest floor. Sagole Big Tree Limpopo has many treasures, one of them being the Sagole Baobab. It is also known as Sagole Big Tree, Muri kunguluwa in TshiVhenda (Tree That Roars) and Muvhuyu wa Makhadzi. This is a champion tree and the largest baobab tree (“Adansonia digitata”) in South Africa. It is east of Tshipise, in Vhembe district, Limpopo, and has a trunk diameter of 10.8m and a circumference of 32.89m. It would

take 18 to 20 people, their arms opened, to encircle the tree. Lake Funduzi Also on the list of things to do is visiting Lake Funduzi in the Soutpansberg of the province. The lake, measuring about 5km by 3km when full, was created by an ancient landslide blocking the course of the Mutale River. The lake, its resident crocodiles and the nearby forest of Thathe Vondo are regarded as sacred by the Vhatavhatsindi, the People of the Pool who are part of the Venda people. Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre For a fun and educational activity, HESC presents a fascinating insight into rare, vulnerable and endangered animal species, and animal conservation efforts at large. It offers fun and informative tours, and other specialised excursions

to visitors. Funds raised through tourism activities are used for conservation projects and daily operating costs. NORTH WEST Upside Down House The Upside down House, a thrill for young and old, is a magical location that resembles something out of a Dr Seus book. The house is only a 45 minute drive from Johannesburg and among the Magaliesburg Mountain Range and the magnificent Hartbeespoort Dam. Magalies River Valley Scenic Balloon Ride You can also take a flight on a hot-air balloon in the scenic Magalies River Valley with Bill Harrop’s Original Balloon Safari Team. This is an out-of-this-world adventure and a bucket-list tick. Your unforgettable journey over the Magalies River Valley begins at sunrise when you will walk down a lantern-lit pathway to enjoy pre-flight coffee or tea and freshly baked muffins while you watch the balloons being inflated. Then, you will embark on your exciting hour-long sunrise flight, taking in the views of the majestic Magaliesburg mountains and river valley. Celebrate landing, with a glass of sparkling wine or juice while the crew pack up the balloons. Return to the Clubhouse Pavilion for a delectable buffet breakfast overlooking the mountains and manicured gardens. Take the Aerial Cableway, Hartbeespoort The Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway is a Swiss-engineered and installed cableway in the heart of Harties. It’s the place to be if you want to experience some of the best views of the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains,

Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas. The destination also offers world-class recreational activities to ensure you enjoy an unforgettable experience. Ride the cableway in either an open-air twoseater or an enclosed four-seater cable car. Boat Cruise Take a water ride and cruise with the Harties Boat Company at Harties Dam. The company offers daily lunch or sunset cruises. The cruise route goes from Kommandonek, passed Caribbean estate and Sandy Lane Golf Course to the Kosmos foreshore and the quaint Kosmos Village to the dam wall, passing the Zoo and Snake Park, as well as the Transvaal Yacht Club. You will then hit open waters and cruise across to Eagle Waters and Pecanwood Estate and Golf Course, taking a look at some of

these fantastic waterfront homes, and then head past The Islands and back to the harbour. Hartbeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park Also in Harties and snuggled against the foot of the Magaliesberg on the eastern shore of Hartbeespoort Dam lies this most remarkable private park, surrounded by massive walls like those of a medieval castle protecting a rare gem. Within the walls, a world has been created where visitors can experience the essence of what makes Hartbeespoort Dam special – animals, water lapping at stone walls and jetties, giant trees, exotic foliage and towering cliffs. The park has an interesting snake and seal show on public holidays, school holidays and weekends at noon and 3pm.
