Ramaphosa hails matric class of 2023 MAYIBONGWE MAQHINA President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the matric class of 2023, saying their unprecedented success was evidence of the determination and ambition of learners and of a nation that values its youth. In a statement, the president offered his warm congratulations and those of the government to the class of 2023 and the extended support system of educators, parents, school governing bodies and health-care providers who carried the cohort of learners through the Covid-19 pandemic when they were in earlier grades. The 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) overall pass rate reached 82.9%, compared with 80.1% in 2022 and 76.4% in 2021. “This is an improvement of 2.8% and 6.5% from the pass rates achieved by the classes of 2022 and 2021, respectively. “In real numbers, 572 983 candidates passed the 2023 NSC exams. As a percentage, the 2023 pass is the highest in the history of the NSC,” Ramaphosa said. He added that the Bachelor passes as well as passes with distinction produced by the class of 2023 stood out as the highest in the history of the NSC exams. “The class of 2023 has given itself and the nation great cause for pride and belief that our investment in education is the key to moving our country forward. “The 2023 matric results show that we are a nation that takes care of its young people - and that our young people are taking care of their future through their resilience and their dedication to learning. “The matric results are an irrefutable indicator of our comprehensive national development during 30 years of freedom and democracy.

Led by Graham West from Brescia House School and Maria Barton from The Ursuline School in New York, the presenters shared their insights and key takeaways from the projects they have done together. This led to emphasis on the need for preparation and planning, navigating differences in time zones and technology, and using a variety of media and stimuli to keep students engaged. After the restrictions of Covid-19, Brescia House School was able to resume its reciprocal international student exchange programme with its sister schools, under the careful guidance of Kim Duncan, the Global Education programme co-ordinator.
The amazing “aha” moments of “same yet different” was again experienced by the Brescia House School pupils who travelled to the US, as well as by those who came here in return. The girls went to school, attended lessons (even on forensics and Arabic) and lived the life of their host families. They enjoyed the leisure experiences of another culture; again forming bonds and values that influence their lives by staying in the homes of their host families. This was considered the most exhilarating “sleepover” they have had in years. Living the Ursuline ethos in other countries expands the value of the work the pupils do in their communities, and reinforces the
power of the motto of all Ursuline schools “serviam” – meaning “to serve”. The community projects ranged from supporting underprivileged communities and promoting environmental sustainability, to advocating for social justice. By working together, Ursuline schools around the world aim to create a network of global learners prepared to tackle the challenges of the 21st century; and equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to thrive in a diverse and interconnected global society. And of course, it gives pupils the advantage of knowing they can cope and contribute to the world stage – even from a little corner.

When the results of the boys’ and girls’ colleges are combined, the 235 candidates achieved a 100% matric pass rate, 98.3 % Bachelor’s degree pass rate, and a total of 612 subject distinctions. Five students achieved the St Stithians summa cum laude award – an average of 90% and above. A total of 171 students achieved an average of 70% or above, and 20 students achieved 32 subject marks in the top 1% of all IEB candidates across 13 subjects. St Mary’s School in Waverley also announced that its learners achieved outstanding results after its Class of 2023 recorded a 100% pass rate, with 81 candidates (out of class of 88 girls) obtaining an average of 60% or higher. For English, 48 girls achieved a distinction with nine placed in the top 1% of the subject.

Providing quality education through academic excellence SUTHERLAND High School in Eldoraigne Centurion has started the year on a triumphant note, with the Suthies obtaining a 100% pass rate, 330 distinctions and an 87.39% Bachelors pass rate. Picture: Supplied BYRON LUKAS From drawing and colouring together in Grade R to walking the matric ball red carpet, five cousins have travelled their schooling journey side by side. And a few weeks ago, they celebrated together again as they all passed matric. The cousins from the Abrahams family in Parktown, Cape Town were in full cheer as they celebrated their matric results, along with the class of 2023. Eighteen-year-old twins Imaan and Ilhaam along with cousins Fawaaz (17), Imtiyaaz (17) and Amarah (18) celebrated their matric results on Friday. The five made headlines in October as they accompanied each other to their matric ball. To celebrate the end of their 12-year educational journey, they walked the red carpet in front of their thrilled parents, friends and family. Imaan said that it was an amazing journey, one that she could share with her relatives. “Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), what a journey we all experienced through sweat and tears but mainly laughter. I am grateful to have started this schooling journey together and (to be) ending it together,” she said. The teens, who attended Bridgetown High School, started school together in Grade R at Blossom Primary.

My sister Ilhaam and my three cousins Amarah, Fawaaz and Imtiyaaz,” Imaan said. Asked how she felt collecting her matric results, Amarah said her nerves were all over the place. “The night before, I was so nervous that I barely slept. As I got my results, I was overwhelmed because I never expected it,” she told the Cape Argus. Imtiyaaz portrayed his accomplishment as “thankful”, saying that Grade 12 was hard for him; however, he pushed through. “When I saw I passed I was very happy and grateful, and all I can say to the matrics of 2024 is work hard, stay focused and don’t give up, you got this. The main thing is you are not alone and ask for help,” he said. The twins’ mother, Zoelfa Abrahams, said it was a momentous occasion for their family. “As a mother to the twins and aunt to the cousins, I can only say that I’m extremely proud of each one of them and wish them well with the journey ahead. Hard work pays off,” she said. After spending 12 years of their schooling together, all five relatives are going to study teaching this year. “All of them are going into the teaching field, so I guess we’ll be having another five Abrahams teachers,” Zoelfa said.
