Editor’s note WE might still be enjoying a few warm and sunny days right now but those will rapidly become few and far between as winter slowly starts to set in.

There’s already a chill in the air when you step out in the morning and you’ve most likely taken your favourite comfy fluffy gown out from the back of your wardrobe because let’s face it, the time for summer PJs are over.

Two years ago we experienced winter in a whole new way. Leaving home wasn’t an option and nor was getting out of your sleepwear. At the peak of the pandemic, winter fashion took a back seat as warmth and comfort were all that mattered. Hence the rise of loungewear.

However, we’ve come a long way since the stringent lockdowns. Our lives are slowly going back to normal. Workers are returning to their offices and friends and family can once again enjoy time together, dine out and party all night. Being out means dressing up. From office wear to party outfits we’re all eager to dress up. Fashion has once again sprung back to life and is bigger and bolder than before. This year’s Fashion Weeks reverted back to how things used to be. Live and direct. Models on the runway and celebs dressed in high fashion designer wear filled the front rows. Our 2022 Autumn/Winter trends report is a peak into what fashionistas will be wearing this season. From over-the-top shoulders to thigh-high boots this winter you’ll have to level up your style game.

While bringing the heat in the latest fashion trends, it is easy to neglect your hair and skin.

We share beauty tips on how to keep your hair and skin in good shape until the warm summer days come around once more.

Skincare routine in winter

GERRY CUPIDO FEEL that chill in the air? Yes, that’s winter signalling its steady approach.

By now, you’ve probably already started noticing subtle changes in your skin.

Using your usual skin products and sticking to your rigorous skincare routine simply isn’t bringing your skin the same joy it has been over the past few months.

With your summer glow slowly starting to fade, it’s time to re-evaluate your skincare routine and make a few changes in preparation for the harsher cold days ahead.

How to get healthy skin TAKE YOUR VITAMINS If a vitamin supplement isn’t already a part of your daily routine, now is the time to add a few to your basket the next time you go shopping.

Besides helping you to boost your immune system during peak flu season - not to mention the ever-present coronavirus - vitamins do wonders for your skin. Most people know the benefits of Vitamin C, but not many know how good it is for your skin as it helps to produce collagen. Vitamin A is vital for skin repair and rejuvenation. Vitamin B contains antioxidants that help to treat signs of ageing. Vitamin K helps reduce those dark circles.

LAYER YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS If you’re a cleanse, tone and moisturiser kind of person, then you might want to add a few extra steps to your routine. The colder weather strips your skin of moisture, so you have to give your skin a bit of a boost. Even if you only add a serum to your routine, you’re already making a major difference. Serums are lightweight and absorb quickly into the skin. Using a serum before applying your moisturiser allows it to penetrate even deeper into the skin.

OPT FOR CREAM RATHER THAN A LOTION Creams are more moisturising than lotions, which don’t provide as strong an oily barrier to reduce water loss in the skin. Although creams feel heavier on the skin, they do a much better job at protecting against the dryer winter temperatures. No matter how cold it gets or how much it rains, and you never see that sun, don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

WARDROBE GERRY CUPIDO AS WE step into May, South Africans already know that summer is officially over.

Frappes are swapped for lattes and sundowner drinks are earlier and moving indoors.

While you might still be able to enjoy the afternoon sun in nothing but a t-shirt or summer dress, the morning chill will have you looking for that jersey you packed away last winter.

Winter is inevitable but it doesn’t mean we have to give up on your summer wardrobe yet.

Here’s how to do it l The floral dress is not just for spring.

Add a pair of tights, swap your summer sandals for ankle or knee-high boots or thick socks with your favourite sneakers, and you’re ready to take on the cooler weather. l A lightweight blazer is a must-have.

Throwing a classic black blazer over any summer look will not only add a bit of warmth but elevate your look. Opt for an oversized jacket and you’ll be bang-on trend. l Don’t give up on your denim cut-off shorts just yet. Simply wear them over a pair of knitted stockings and throw on some chunky loafers. Your summer fave is now autumn-ready. lTransitioning from summer to winter is all about layering. Always have a lightweight knitted sweater at hand. The hoodie you nabbed from your boyfriend last year will come in handy again. l Bodysuits will offer a layer of warmth if you’re not keen on outerwear. l Keep it light for now. We’re not quite ready for heavy knits, leather jackets and puffer coats just yet.

GERALDINE CUPIDO WHILE the fashionistas in the Northern Hemisphere are eagerly awaiting warmer days with spring on their doorstep, the crisp mornings and nippy evenings are a clear indication that autumn is on ours.

The Autumn/Winter 2022 collections shown over the past month’s during fashion weeks - Paris, Milan, New York and London - have provided us with insight into what international fashion houses see our winter wardrobes looking like this season.

This year we were happy to see the return of physical fashion shows. Not only does this bring the drama we all love and so eagerly look forward to on the runway with over-thetop productions but it brought out celebrities who once again brought their fashion A-game to the front row.

Of course, there were some shows that left more of an impression than others.

Balenciaga’s show deserves an honourable mention. With Paris Fashion Week came devastating news of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

While the label's Creative Director, Demna Gvasalia intended the show to be a commentary on climate change showing models battling to walk through a realistic-looking snowstorm, the Georgian designer also paid tribute to the heartbreak and suffering in Ukraine.

On every seat, Gvasalia left a personal note saying, “The war in Ukraine has triggered the pain of a past trauma I have carried in me since 1993 when the same thing happened in my home country and I became a forever refugee. This is why working on this show was so incredibly hard

for me. Because in a time like this, fashion loses its relevance and its actual right to exist.

Fashion week feels like some kind of absurdity."

He did however choose to carry on with the show saying: "Cancelling this show would mean giving in, surrendering to the evil that has already hurt me so much for almost 30 years.

I decided that I can no longer sacrifice parts of me to that senseless, heartless war of ego."

Another stand-out show was Valentino’s all pink show. Fashion houses have been doing all-black or white shows for years but we’ve not seen a show dedicated to such a bold colour.

The 81-piece “Valentino Pink PP Collection”, was designed in the same shade of pink which was creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli in collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute.

In the show notes, he explains, “Pink as a manifestation of the unconscious and liberation from the need for realism. The accumulation of pink elements is such as to eliminate the visual shock to bring out, together, the unique character of the person, expressed by the face and the eyes, and the work on the pieces of clothing: the signs that shape them into a silhouette, the textures that give them consistency, the decorations that are part of the construction...

The pink-out is an experimental yet deeply human gesture that enhances individuality, capturing values and feelings."

While these two shows will continue to have a lasting impact on the fashion industry, there are other shows that have set the trend for the chilly season ahead.

Here are three trends that came through strong on the runway.

OVERSIZED OUTERWEAR AND MEGA SHOULDERS At the Prada show, we saw leather trench coats with sharp exaggerated broad shoulders as well as oversized puffer jackets.

The Dolce & Gabbana show was all about oversized structured suits with dramatic, completely over the top shoulders. Their gold and black double-breast suit made a shimmering statement while their oversized basketball bomber inspired jacket and hoodies are a more subtle take on the trend. Louis Vuitton went huge on outerwear. From coats to biker jackets, the look was bigger is better.

LAYERING This is a trend we can all welcome with open arms.

The colder it becomes the more layers we tend to wear. This season we see designers embrace the need for layering. We saw this best at the Louis Vuitton show where they layered different textured fabrics and styles. Mixing feminine and masculine. Layering structured suits over flowing delicate fabric. Layers of skirts over dresses.

Givenchy’s take on the trend took more of a grunge feel, with all-over black on black layering of T-shirts, sweaters and baggy jeans.

KNEE AND THIGH HIGH BOOTS While knee-high boots are not uncommon to a winter wardrobe, they are certainly big this winter.

From Kim Kardashian to Rihanna we’ve already seen the celebrities out and about in them. We’re loving the more baggy, relaxed fit of this season’s knee and over the knee boots. Isabel Marant is known for her fabulous shoe designs and her winter boots are no exception.

The metallic blue leather boots and slouchy motocross-inspired boots stole the show. No Bottega Veneta collection is complete without a Bottega Green must-have item.

This season it’s their metallic green thigh-high boot. We saw flowerembellished, a common thread throughout the collection, on their baggy boots at the Roberto Cavalli show.

GERRY CUPIDO WITH a change in season, we are forced to make a few changes to our wardrobe – bring out the boots and coats – as well as our skincare.

Yes, just as you’ve perfected your skincare routine and your skin is glowing, along comes winter.

The summer heat naturally provides the skin with warmth resulting in a rosy, dewy glow, especially if you’ve spent a day out on the beach, but during winter we tend to stay indoors, barely seeing the sun as we try to escape the chill.

As you change your beauty products to give your skin the extra help it needs during the harsh weather, you might want to consider changing how you use your perfume.

Because your skin is obviously colder in winter, you cannot rely on your body heat to enhance and prolong the scent of your perfume.

Perfume can be pricey, therefore you don’t want to have to reapply your perfume all day.

Here’s how you can make your perfume last longer during the chilly days ahead.

In the same way that you layer your clothes in winter, you should try doing the same with your perfume. Many perfumes are available in a range of additional products. Choose a body lotion or moisturiser that matches your perfume, even if you just apply the lotion to certain areas of the body.

The fact that we cover up so much of our skin in winter means that the areas where we ordinarily apply perfume in summer are most likely covered in bulky clothes. While layering your perfume with different formats, applying it to bits of skin that most likely be exposed is your best bet. Your best spots would be the back of your ears and your wrists. If you’re feeling generous, spritz a small amount into your hair.

If you still feel that your perfume scent is too subtle, you could spray your clothing. Note this is only if your perfume is light and generally fades quickly. Whether it’s summer or winter, there’s nothing worse than overpowering perfume. So just a few squirts will do.

stain your garments, so be careful which fabric you use it on. If you wear any thermal undergarments, spray those as they sit closest to your skin.

Applying perfume to your outer garments like a coat or jacket is great, especially since it’s not an item you wash with every wear.

While we all have our favourite perfumes, it is a good idea to have a different fragrance for the colder seasons. In the same way as you would wear a different perfume day and night. In summer we tend to opt for light, fresh and floral fragrances. With your body heat in summer these light perfumes are able to last long but will not hold up in winter when your body is cold. In winter, look out for perfumes with more warm, woody and earthy fragrances. Scents like sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla and musk tones are great for winter perfumes. When buying a new winter perfume opt for the eau de parfum version of the fragrance. Eau de toilette is lighter and doesn’t have the intensity and fades faster.

Now, this might sound a bit cheap, but those little sample perfume bottles can really go a long way. Most stores have sample perfumes of the one you already own. Don’t be shy to ask an assistant for a sample. Keep it in your handbag for the occasional spritz.

How to take care of your feet during winter

GERRY CUPIDO FLIP-flops and strappy sandals will soon be replaced with chunky socks and boots galore.

Because our feet are always on display in summer, pedicures with pretty nail colours are an essential part of your beauty routine.

You won’t dare slip dry feet with cracked heels into a fancy pair of sandals!

Therefore people tend to take less care of their feet in winter, when they are all covered up and tucked away in comfy furry boots. Out of sight, out of mind. They still need some TLC. Winter doesn’t last forever and the last thing you want when spring comes around is dry cracked heels, and toenails that need serious attention.

Here’s how to take care of your feet during the colder months, including an easy home pedicure.

When it comes to socks, opt for natural fabrics like cotton or wool. These allow your feet to breathe whereas synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, don't.

Moisturise. While you might do your best to keep your feet warm and cosy, the cold will still dry your skin. The extra hot showers and long baths that we love during winter will dry your skin even more. Moisturising is the best defence against dry skin.

Opt for rich creams and oils to keep those cracked heels at bay.

Home pedicure WE DON’T get out to salons as often in winter, but a simple home pedicure is an easy enough routine to add to your skincare regime.

Here are four easy steps to follow for the perfect home pedi.

Soak your feet. This is one way to soften the soles of your feet including your heels which take most of the beating. Once you’re done soaking your feet pat them dry using a towel.

Exfoliate. A foot scrub helps to soften your heels. Rinse off all the exfoliating scrub with warm water before moving on to the next step.

Use a pumice stone to help smooth your feet. Gently rub the pumice stone against rough areas, especially your heels.

Now moisturise your feet as if your life depended on it. If you’re doing your pedi before bed, apply a generous amount of moisturiser then cover your feet with cotton socks.

HOW TO PROTECT THOBILE MAZIBUKO BEAUTIFUL as it is, taking care of your natural hair can also be challenging, especially during winter.

It is because winter conditions have elements that are not good for natural hair.

The cold air and the wind take the moisture out of your hair, causing it to tangle. The dryness in the air can cause frizz and breakage.

Wearing a warm hat or scarf can also result in additional breakage.

Here are some tips to look after your hair in the cold months.

Take advantage of protective hairstyles to keep your hair from being damaged by the winter air.

Protective styles lower the chance of breakage. However, although the styles will help retain the moisture, they will eventually dry out. Make sure you change or refresh the style after a week or two. Also, give your hair a break in between the styles.

Get rid of split ends by trimming your hair now and then.

You’d be surprised how a healthy diet can be beneficial to your hair.

Always eat healthy foods and drink water.

Your hair will benefit from the nutrients in the healthy food, promoting growth and shine.

Wherever you go to sleep, wear a satin bonnet to help keep in the moisture and decrease the chance of friction, frizz and dryness.

A satin pillowcase is also an option instead of a silk bonnet.

Artificial heat like a hot hairdryer can dry out your hair even more.

Keep the hairdryer on cool to avoid further hair damage.
