Rooster Neighbors Cry Fowl

What, I say, what’s all this fuss about our fine, feathered friends?

While cartoon fans may have fond feelings for the character Foghorn Leghorn, real roosters were the subject of impassioned complaints last week, as a contingent of residents implored the East Hampton Town Board to do something to quell the noise of their constant cock-adoodle-dooing.

A rooster in the yard near Grace Baumel’s Springs home crows at 3:30, 5:30 and 6:30 in the morning, then again at 3:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon. “I don’t know if it’s blind.

I don’t know if it realizes the sun is up,” she said of the afternoon cock-

cophony. “But I’ve had it.”

Guy Wiggins reported that he bought his home off Springs Close Highway about 13 years ago and has been “so bedeviled by a rooster there.” Parcels in his cul de sac abut farmland, and the noise from the bird was so bothersome, he offered to pay the farmer to relocate the critter. He shelled out $500, only to return the following summer to find the rooster had come back home to . . . uh . . . roost.

Constance Kenney, who’s owned a vacation home in East Hampton for 15 years, said the rooster in her neighborhood starts crowing at 3 AM and the noise goes on “all day.” Kenney plans to move here

permanently when she retires next year. “I would like to enjoy my home, but I’m being pushed out of it,” she said.

in the neighborhood, she said, making clear her annoying rooster isn’t the same one that’s irking Baumel or Wiggins. They’re three different birds in three different neighborhoods.

Kenney wondered why the town couldn’t enact an ordinance similar to the one Sag Harbor Village recently adopted. Last spring village officials hatched regulations dubbed “the chicken law.” It allows one chicken for every 3500 square feet of residential property. No roosters are allowed at all. That prohibition has “always been in place,” Fred Thiele, Sag Harbor’s village attorney reported this week. In 1939, all fowl were banned within Sag Harbor Village bounds. This year’s law actually exempted chickens from the rule, permitting them.

East Hampton Village has a code provision, adopted in 1950, that prohibits the harboring of fowl that interfere with the public peace. Village Administrator Larry Cantwell clucked with sympathy when he heard about the town’s rooster ruckus. He said he couldn’t recall any complaints about roosters or chickens in the village. It’s more of a swan type of place.

Could the East Hampton Town Board consider an ordinance banning the Bantams, the rooster revilers wondered. Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc said there was no “technical” reason why the board couldn’t adopt such a regulation.

So far, none of the board members have evinced an embracing of a poultry provision.

If they try, they’re going to have Diane McNally to contend with.

At the meeting in her capacity as Clerk of the East Hampton Town Trustees, McNally took the podium, identifying herself as a rooster owner.

Taking note of cock critics who lived in East Hampton for 13 and 15 years, she said, “I’m 53 years old and I’ve lived in this community my whole life and I’ve had chickens and ducks and roosters in my yard CONTINUED ON PAGE 32.

I’VE GOT WHOOPING COUGH. I THINK. I woke up the other night, cleared my throat, coughed once and – still half asleep – jumped up and screamed, “Whooping cough! I’ve got whooping cough!”

Whooping cough, for those of you who aren’t watching the evening news, is this year’s hot disease. It’s an oldie but a goodie. Brian Williams ran a piece on NBC the other night and they had a series of doctors soberly shaking their heads and proclaiming that we were in for a wave of whooping cough that will have us all dropping like flies.

I was happy to hear the news. I had found my disease du jour.

I’m a hypochondriac. A hopeless, helpless hypochondriac. The fact is, I have had every disease known to mankind. Thousands of imagined heart attacks. Gall bladder problems?

Sure. Typhoid fever? Naturally.

Malaria? NyQuil cured that. Did I ever tell you about when I had leprosy? It was really not that serious. Cured it with Pepto-Bismol.

There is no known cure for hypochondria. I can’t tell you how happy I am these days. Thanks to modern communications . . . the internet . . . cable television’s insatiable hunger for new stories . . . my insanity is in season.

Every summer for 30 years I was sure I had Lyme disease. I spent countless hours searching for ticks.

No, I never looked on my property. I was sure there were no ticks on my property — they were all on me.

Every night I would go on a tick hunt. Then there was the eternal search for the bull’s-eye red rash that everyone tells you is evidence of Lyme disease. I would stare for hours at a bite and think, “Maybe it’s

just the center of the bull’s-eye that’s showing and the rest of the bull’s-eye will come out tomorrow.” Spider bites were my favorite because they were so . . . so . . . dramatic.

Then about 15 years ago something came along that temporarily took my mind off Lyme disease. Let’s hear it for the West Nile virus! Wow! Who wants to think that they’re merely crippled and miserable with Lyme disease when one can imagine they’ll be dead as a doornail with West Nile?

What was so threatening was it was spread by birds that, I guess, gave it to mosquitoes. I don’t even want to think about how those great big birds infected those tiny mosquitoes.

Suddenly every mosquito became a potential killer. I would lie in bed at night listening to the mosquitoes dive-bombing my large but handsome body. Which one was carrying West Nile?

But hypochondria is a fickle thing.

Today, West Nile can’t get arrested.

One month ago was the official beginning of the West Nile season.

No one noticed. I must admit that on opening day of the West Nile season I thought that Mayor Bloomberg should have thrown out the first dead bird. But West Nile was out years ago when it was replaced by — SARS. SARS, quite frankly, was sexy to those of us who are filled with fear.

It was exotic. It came from China.

SARS even made it to the front page of The New York Times. I had friends who purchased those white surgical masks that were the rage in China. My friends are a disgrace to hypochondria. Real hypochondriacs like me would never wear no stinking masks. Masks took the sport out of SARS. I remember one Sunday years ago when I ordered Chinese take out. In New York City, on a Sunday night, there are thousands of hard-working Chinese men, wearing dark clothing, riding on bicycles, going the wrong way on one-way streets.

Just like in World War II, when American pilots had tiny zeros painted on their planes to show how many enemy planes they had shot down, these Chinese delivery guys have pictures of tiny hips painted on the side of their bikes to commemorate how many hips they have broken on people who were merely attempting to cross a New York City street.

It is a dangerous job, and more Chinese driving like zombies in the middle of traffic have perished on those bicycles than have died from SARS. When the bell rang in my home and when I answered the door, a very nice Chinese man said “Derivery!”

“SARS!” I remember thinking.

“Why isn’t he wearing his mask?” I thanked the man and was handing him a handsome tip for his efforts

when he coughed. Actually, in the spirit of accuracy, he didn’t exactly cough; it was sort of a half-cough, half-clearing of the throat. I did not cover myself with glory at this point.

In fact I jumped three feet back and made a little cowardly sound like “YIIIIPPPPPES.” I dropped his tip and bent to pick it up. Unfortunately, he bent to pick up the money at the same time and we hit heads. “I’m dead,” I thought, and wondered if SARS could go through a brown paper bag and infect $63 dollars worth of egg rolls, won ton soup, etc. I immediately took three Advil which, at the time, I was convinced was the cure for SARs. I was right. I didn’t come down with SARS. Ten years ago my hypochondriacal insanity reached a peak that made me the laughing stock of my family. With one admission I became the object of ridicule by my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, and lost the grudging respect that two teenagers give a parent as flawed as I am.

It was a Sunday when we hurriedly packed up our car trying stupidly to beat the traffic to New York City.

From the minute I got into the car I was aware of a cold feeling on my right side, just below my hip. “Nerve damage,” I thought.

The more we rode on, the colder it felt. I had packed four bags and carried them out of my home and packed them into the back of my car and, perhaps, I had thrown out my hip and maybe this was the beginning of a problem that would eventually lead to a hip replacement.

Then again, the ice-cold feeling below my hip could be a signal that my brain was sending to my body.

Brain surgery crossed my mind. Was it the beginning of a kidney or liver condition and was this “referred” pain?

Near Manorville I stopped the car at McDonald’s so that I might go in and check the source of this feeling of freezing cold on my hip. I stepped gingerly out of the car and decided to see if I could feel anything through my pants pocket. I wondered about a living will. I wondered about irreversible nerve damage. I put my hand in my pocket, fearing the worst.

Then I felt it and took it out of my pocket. An almost melted Fudgesicle.

I had put it in my pocket as I left the house to eat on the road. In the rush of packing the car I had forgotten it was in my pocket.

I debated telling my family but then I thought, “What the hell. What good is it having a nutty father if he can’t give you a laugh every once in a while?” Judy and the kids laughed all the way home.

I was happy, too. Once again I had cheated death.

Court Renders Another Airport Decision

The victors are calling it a “landmark” decision designed to bring closure to the argument. The losers say ‘not so much’ and not so fast. Last week another phase of the decades-long lawsuits regarding the East Hampton Airport came to a close . . . maybe.

The state supreme court upheld the Airport Master Plan and Airport Layout Plan adopted by the town board in 2010, dismissing a case brought by one time town supervisor candidate and Democratic Party bigwig David Gruber and his Committee to Stop Airport Expansion “in its entirety,” according to a release from the East Hampton Aviation Association. The plan calls for the closing of one runway, the repair of another, and connecting two taxiways. Officials have repeatedly emphasized the plan is about safety, not expansion.

The repair of one runway has been urged by pilots in requests dating back to 1989.

“The Airport Master Plan and Layout Plan are now in full force and effect. It is the law in East Hampton.

It provides for the repair of the runway. Now, we urge the town to proceed with the repair of the runway without further delay,” said Tom Twomey, an EHAA director and member of its legal team. Over the years Twomey testified about a near miss he experienced at the airport.

The 11-page decision affirms the town took the requisite “hard look” at potential environmental impacts associated with the plans.

“It is clear,” the decision states, “the [environmental review document] has adequately considered the issue of noise impacts, and the issue of runway choice.”

EHAA members reminded this week that opponents’ legal efforts were “rebuffed at every level,” noting, “This latest ruling is in effect, the fourth ruling won by the town in this single case.”

According to Jeff Bragman, attorney for the opponents, the judge “took the bait,” and accepted noise standard data that is “patently irrational” -- irrational because it relates to airports, like LaGuardia, that are significantly larger than East Hampton.

“The court explicitly accepted the Town’s claim that it is technically acceptable to use the FAA’s 65 DNL noise standard (according to which there is no noise outside the airport itself) for purposes of the environmental impact statement,” Gruber explained. “Yet, Peter Kirsch, the town’s special aviation counsel,

publicly stated in April that no competent noise expert would do this because the standard is inappropriate for a small airport such as East Hampton and would necessarily show “no noise.” In Kirsch’s words, a noise analysis using 65 DNL is “a waste of time.”

“Kirsch’s public statements are exactly what we were arguing to the court,” Gruber continued. “Kirsch is right. We were right. The EIS noise analysis was worthless as a result.”

Bragman reported a motion related to Kirsch’s testimony was

recently submitted and was still pending when the decision was rendered last week.

“The Town’s EIS [Environmental Impact statement] says there is ‘no significant noise outside the airport itself.’ This is patently ridiculous, but the court bought the Town’s claim. The only solution now is to elect Town Board members who will assert local control over the airport and protect the public from noise.

recent liaison to airport issues. “I’m delighted with the court’s decision,” he said. “It validates all the hard work of town staff and other airport professionals. We now have the opportunity to move forward with the Airport Master Plan and propose comprehensive airport management and noise abatement plan. More importantly, we have the opportunity to complete the responsible financing for modernizing our airport, which includes accepting FAA funds.”

Local real estate brokers are eternal optimists – they always see blue skies and clear sailing ahead.

sold also rebounded in the second quarter, rising from $542,160 in the first quarter to $700,000. However, the Median Price in the second quarter is less than it was in the second quarters of 2008, 2010, and 2011. Unit Sales in the second quarter hit a five-year high when compared to the same quarters of previous years.

In Southampton Town, numbers were down across the board when compared to the same quarter in the last year. Median Price, Dollar Sales, and Unit Sales, all declined; Sales decreased by 9.1 percent.

The market was livelier in East Hampton – sales increased over 42 percent in the second quarter of 2012 when compared to the same quarter in 2011. Unit Sales increased from 153 to 185 but the Median Price declined slightly.

The average sale price of singlefamily homes in Riverhead has been dropping steadily. In the second quarter of 2008 it was $411,103: in the second quarter of this year it fell to $320,000.

Southampton Town To Address Beach Erosion

One of the Hamptons’ most prized assets is getting a little TLC. Two years ago, the Southampton To w n B o a r d a u t h o r i z e d t h e establishment of a beach erosion control district known as the Sagaponack Beach Erosion Control District.

Since then, the town board, on behalf of “the District,” has joined forces with the firm First Coastal Corporation to prepare baseline surveys, evaluate shoreline erosion along the beach, develop alternate plans for beach restoration, and commence the permitting process for a beach restoration project.

Scheduled for a public hearing

in August, the next phase of the project is ready to begin.

According to Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, “First Coastal, together with its partner Coastal Science & Engineering, Inc., seeks to improve the beach-dune system within the District through the addition of approximately 1,035,000 cubic yards of sand from an external

source.”

This would result in recreational opportunities being enhanced via a wider beach as well as a preserved community tax base and normal seasonal processes of erosion and accretion without adverse impacts to the dune line, according to town officials. Other benefits of the project include a reduction in flooding and maintaining the aesthetic quality and values already present.

On Friday afternoon, Southampton Town Comptroller Len Marchese, Deputy Town Attorney Kathleen Murray and Acting Town Planning and Development Administrator Freda Eisenberg met with the town board to discuss improvements to be made to the Bridgehampton and Sagaponack Beach Erosion Control Districts.

It was reported that the target life for the project is about 10 years and is slated to cost over $12 million. Most of the cost would be concerning the placement of sand and is set to be financed through the issuance of bonds with a period of ten years, according to a resolution outlining the proposal.

Improving the beach is not all of the project. Annual beach monitoring was deemed necessary to ensure current and accurate data in order to satisfy the Federal Emergendy Management Agency’s reporting requirements. Of the approximate $12 million price tag for the project, about $60,000 is expected to go toward monitoring costs per year. That amount is expected to be financed through the assessment, levying, and collecting of taxes from property owners within the District.

LVIS Fair On Tap Saturday

The Ladies are at it again, and this time they have Bieber Fever.

This Saturday, for the 116th time dating back to 1896, The Ladies’ Village Improvement Society of East Hampton will hold it annual Fair.

According to the LVIS website, the Fair “is one of the major sources of funding for all of our community activities.”

The festivities will take place in and in front of the LVIS house from 10 AM to 4 PM, which Kori Peters, a spokeswoman for LVIS, said “is great because people can get a mini-tour of the standout auction items inside, and can also get some of the history behind the organization.”

East Hampton’s Ladies’ Village Improvement Society has not only kept the trees flourishing and the

village signless; it has become an integral part of the community. Last year, scholarships were awarded to 19 “outstanding East Hampton young men and women”, with the total money awarded exceeding $100,000. This past December, LVIS awarded its Madelon DeVoe Talley scholarship to Patricia Grande and Bobbi Coleman, both studying at Suffolk Community College.

Fredericks To Read At The LVIS Fair The Indy’s own Karen Fredericks will read to the children at the LVIS Fair this Saturday, from the award winning book How To Build Your Own Country. The book was illustrated by Fredericks and written by Valerie Wyatt. It was a junior Library Guild Selection and has won multiple awards. The first 20 children to arrive will receive a free copy of the book to take home with them. How To Build Your Own Country is part of CitizenKid: A collection of books that inform children about the world and inspire them to be better global citizens. Suggested reading level: ages seven to 12. The reading will be in the Sunken Garden at 1 PM and admission is free.

The first fair was held in 1896 at Clinton Hall (now the Clinton Academy) and raised over $500.

Children ate cake, collected flowers, and drank lemonade from the local booths as any donations people could spare were made for the betterment of the community. This tradition is alive and well 116 years later. Booths offer local food and drink, there is a country market, art, a plant sale, vintage clothing, and much more, so come hungry!

Many activities are available for children, including a magic show, a petting zoo and a carousel.

New this year will be the local artisan booth, which will present mixed media art, photography, sculpture, pottery, and ceramics.

LVIS continues its popular online silent auction this summer. Peters spoke of the “incredible travel experiences” as a highlight of the auction. These opportunities include a week stay in a villa overlooking the Mediterranean in southern Spain’s Salobrena, a Holland America Lines cruise, a four-night stay at a premier hotel in Sweden, and six nights at a private hotel/golf club outside London which will include a round of golf.

A handful of celebrities are sure to spice up the auction’s bidding.

With an opening bid of $1000 - item number 421 includes four tickets to see Justin Bieber in concert at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn on November 12. Kids As Action Heroes

With Spiderman, Batman, Iron Man and Wolverine returning to the pop culture forefront, lots of kids fantasize about becoming an action hero. Thanks to generationOn’s new summer campaign, they can be . . . in their own communities.

According to spokesman Carlos Munguia, “GenerationOn is empowering kids all over the country to use their freedom to take action and make their mark in the community.” The youth enterprise of Po in ts of Light I n sti tu te , generationOn encourages kids to become heroes in their community through service and volunteerism with the launch of “The World Needs More Community Action Heroes” summer 2012 campaign.

With most local schools listing community service as a graduation requirement, the program can give students a boost and encouragement as they attempt to amass necessary hours.

To begin, kids can log on to the generationOn website at communityactionheroes.generationon. org to find a local service project to complete on their own or with their friends in a specific issue area: animals, literacy, health, emergency preparedness, environment, homelessness, hunger or military.

After they get started with their project, they can upload stories (via text and video) through the website for an opportunity to win a grant for Community Action Heroes (individuals or teams) to continue their great work.

“GenerationOn encourages youth to take action, no matter how big or small the project may be,” said Munguia.

According to a recent release, “GenerationOn is the global youth service movement igniting the power of all kids to make their mark on the world. As Points of Light’s youth service enterprise, generationOn inspires, equips and mobilizes youth to take action through generationOn service clubs, schools, youth organizations, campaigns and youth leadership initiatives.”

Two volunteer fireman from the Selden Fire Department Drill Team were injured Saturday at the 26th RHFD annual motorized tournament. More than 500 spectators attended the competition. The injuries occurred during the motor-pump competition when a hose coupling broke and injured the two firefighters. They were transported by Riverhead and Flanders ambulances to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Cops Hunt Hit & Run Suspect As The Independent went to press yesterday, a manhunt was underway for the suspect police believe was driving the car that struck and killed Sister Jacqueline Walsh earlier this month.

They identified the driver on Friday announcing his name in a release featuring the word “wanted” in bright red letters. Carlos Armando Ixpec-Chitay is a 30-year-old Hispanic male with dark brown or black hair, and brown eyes. He’s about 140 pounds and 5 feet,7 inches tall. Cops say he is “known to frequent” areas in Water Mill and Riverhead. Police reportedly knew the suspect’s identity for a while, but refrained from releasing it because they felt close to collaring him several times. He continued to elude them and now cops want help from the public.

Sister Jacqueline was walking on Rose Hill Road, in Water Mill on the evening of July 9 when she was struck and killed. She was on retreat with colleagues from the Sisters of Mercy in Syosset. Not long after the fatal strike, police found an abandoned Volkswagen Touareg with damage consistent with the hit and run nearby. It was registered to Ixpec-Chitay’s boss.

More than 500 mourners attended upisland funeral services for “Sister Jackie,” who was 59 when she was killed. In published reports, some said they were praying for the suspect and his family. He’s said to have fled the state as of press time.

RICK’S SPACE Undaunted Courage I developed my “Can Do” attitude when I was in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Naw, I’m lying.

I don’t think I have the emotional make-up to be in the armed forces.

Put another way, I’m a pacifist. A peacenik. After all, I did grow up in the sixties, and marched against the Vietnam War, but most of all . . . I’m a fraidy cat.

I learned this early in life, and I am reminded of this fact each and every day. For example, every time I take a shower and put shampoo on my hair I squint down and convince myself that little magnet holding the liner down is a Black Widow Spider. I always stand as far away from it as I can, even though this identical thing crosses my mind every day, as it has for the past 50 years. I also convince myself the bugs with the pincers in their heads are in my bathing suit whenever I am in water over my head.

These kinds of phobias would

not serve me well in the Marines.

It takes a special kind of courage to become a member of the armed forces, and that means not being afraid of magnets.

When I was a little kid, war movies were all in vogue, and it seemed like every Saturday matinee was a World War II action flick.

One common thread all the movies shared was interrogation techniques the prisoners endured.

Basically a POW would be brought into a room with a couple crazed Nazis with twisted looks on their faces.

The American would come in and say something like, “Lieutenant John Smith, U.S. Marine Corps, Second Division, Third Regiment, serial number 006578389.”

“You vill talk,” one of the Nazi’s would say, leering madly. Then the camera would pan to some crude restraining device. Soon the prisoner, strapped down, would

endure some awful form of torture.

Through it all, the Nazi would ask stuff like, “tell me where your ammunition is stored?” The American would reply: “John Smith, Second Division, serial number 006578389.” He’d be sweating profusely and cringing. He’d scream out intermittently. And then the scene would repeat until the prisoner died, was saved, or broke free and killed all the Nazis.

By the time I was eight or so I knew that wasn’t for me. I simply lack the intestinal fortitude to withstand torture. I’m just not into it. I can only imagine how I would perform if put in the same predicament.

“You vill tell me everything,” the Nazi would say.

“Where is the ammunition stored?” he would demand.

I would reply with my name, rank, and serial number.

Then the Nazi would strap me into the restraining device.

Seriously, we all have our fears and phobias. Some of us need to fall asleep with a light on. Some people are afraid to get on an elevator. I know some people who have never gone swimming in their entire life.

All these fears are real – but imagine charging into the face of machine guns, or being attacked by soldiers with bayonets.

Watching the Soldier Riders Saturday was deeply humbling. It made me think of the guys who came back wounded, and those who didn’t come back at all, among them a half-dozen of my high school friends. Their courage was staggering. I’m awestruck when I think of all of those who went off to war for the rest of us. Maybe I’m flashing back to the sixties, but there has got to be a better way.

The Deer Our stance about the deer population on the East End has been the same for some time. Though we acknowledge there may be too many, we are proponents of humane solutions. This argument has gone on for years – it’s raged in North Haven for 25 years. It’s happening now in East Hampton, but it could well be anywhere out here. We’ve heard of humane solutions for years – birth control proponents often butt heads with those who want to increase the hunting season or widen the areas where hunting is allowed. The fact is, had we implemented contraceptive programs or other non-lethal control solutions 20 years ago we likely wouldn’t be having this discussion today. It’s never too late to start addressing the problem and strive for a long-term solution that is humane, even if that’s not viable in the short term.

Beach Driving Speaking of debates that have raged for years, consider the beach driver and beach goer, constantly at odds over sharing beaches. On one hand, there are more SUVs out there than ever before. On the other, citizens have a right to drive on the beaches. The only real solution is to designate some beaches for swimming only during the warm weather. The problem is they are overcrowded, parking spaces are hard to come by, and there are dozens of out-of-the-way beaches that aren’t officially designated for swimming. One solution proposed in East Hampton is to build another ocean beach in Napeague Stretch, and we’re for that as long as the small neighborhood to the west isn’t compromised. Another is to hire some more lifeguards and pick a few more places in each town that are popular bathing beaches, and keep the trucks off them from say 10 AM to 6 PM. That leaves time for swimming,

Triumphant Triathletes To the Editor, There are times in our lives that we learn without planning on it. When we see something so powerful, so beautiful, we must pause to realize that we are being taught. Yesterday was one of those moments.

I awoke at 4:30 AM to drive the two hours to East Hampton. I arrived to Maidstone Park to the hustle of 74 children preparing for a youth triathlon. What most of us, as adults, would not even consider doing, these 74 children had trained, visualized and were now ready to compete

in a real triathlon in open waters and on the road. These kids were not swimming in the Y’s pool and riding circles in a parking lot. They were going to get to experience a true triathlon at distances that would be challenging for many adults. The difference was that these children did not know that they couldn’t do something.

That is what I learned yesterday.

I saw a mother crying as she watched her daughter, Olive, swim, flanked by two lifeguards. She was struggling and was the very last swimmer to complete that portion of the race. Then I saw Olive swim out of the water, wave to the crowd and RUN up the beach to get on her bike. I’m sure she knew she was last, but you never would have guessed that from her attitude. She was a champion.

That is what the Maidstone Park Youth

The East Hampton Airport The most important news about the airport to surface recently wasn’t the lawsuit won by the town, but the release of complaint statistics. Thanks to the new technology the town knows who is filing the complaints – There were 1127 noise complaints in June. In previous years the uninformed might have construed that more than 1000 people filed complaints – and that’s a lot. But all those complaints came from 94 households, and five people were responsible for 610 complaints – more than half. Twenty households filed 80 percent of the complaints. We understand it is a passionate issue, pitting pilots and airport users against neighbors and those in the path of the noisy helicopters. But it has always been our contention that most of us don’t get our dander up simply because it isn’t an issue that concerns us. If there are only a handful of citizens doing most of the complaining, would we really want to turn our backs on federal funds just to appease them?

Dogs It used to be folks let their dogs out the back door around these parts, and it seemed to work fine. Sadly, those days are over. When we hear of vicious dogs ripping apart other dogs, about people who are afraid to let their kids walk out the front door because of a neighbor’s dog, the truth hits home – we need a leash law, be it on the streets or on the beach. We also need stricter laws in place: Putting a dog to sleep after it kills isn’t the solution -- the owners of these dogs need to be punished, and that means hefty fines or even jail time.

Triathlon is about. It is about young people trying and accomplishing. For some of the athletic ones who were trained, their goal was to finish first. For many, the goal was to finish. For Lila, who fell off her bike, brushed herself off and kept riding, when she finished, she simply wanted to clean up her cuts and scrapes that must have hurt, but did not stop her. I saw girls who finished cling to their mothers and cry together. I saw children put their heads together afterwards for a silent thank you. I saw boys hugging their fathers, a rarity for many. I saw competitors wait to hold hands as they crossed the finish line with teammates.

The Hamptons are gorgeous and exciting and, for many, a dream. Yesterday, the Hamptons weren’t “The Hamptons.”

They were a place where personal

character triumphed, where children taught adults that nothing is impossible. If I could have learned that at 13, I’d be a different 34 year old today.

People talk about life-changing moments. For these children, I can only wish they realize they were experiencing a life-changing moment. May they always remember that their parents and families were out there cheering for them out loud.

For many of us parents, we cheer silently, and so rarely scream for our children at the top of our lungs. Imagine if every child knew their parents believed so fiercely in them.

May they always remember that it is good to train as a team even for individual glory. May they always remember that doing something hard is hard, but doing something easy is just not as fun. May Continued on page 24.

Blame Game Dear Editor, Over the weekend, Mr. [David] Gruber has been issuing statements blaming various individuals for his devastating loss in the litigation against the new town Airport Master Plan.

He blames the town experts who he says collected faulty data for their noise analysis despite the fact that he recommended these very same experts to work for the town.

He blames the town attorneys who he says lied to the court despite the fact that six New York State Supreme Court Justices said his allegations were “without merit.”

He blames the town’s special airport counsel for advising the Town it can continue to receive FAA funding while at the same time curbing helicopter noise in our neighborhoods despite the fact that the town hired this counsel at the insistence of Mr. Gruber.

He blames the judges who are in collusion with all levels of government.

He blames the entire judicial system from which no justice can be secured.

But the only person who deserves the blame is Mr. Gruber himself for conjuring bogus legal theories, which have no merit according to the courts.

How’s your summer vacation going?

Sarina Langer It’s been great coming here and being with all my cousins. I’m from the west coast and the beaches are so much warmer here. And I saw my first lightening storm last week. That was the first time I ever saw lightening. It’s really rare on the west coast.

Nicky McAllister I like going in the ocean and I went to two camps this summer. One was for sports and one was an ocean camp. It was at the Marine Center in Amagansett. We got to touch sea creatures. We touched a starfish and we touched a crab. And we touched some fish.

Ricci Bollini My summer’s going great. We came from California so it’s great visiting the whole other side of the country. And the beaches are way better here than home. Where we live you can’t even swim at the beaches because it’s too cold. You need a wet suit and scuba gear.

Max Wheeler It’s going good. It’s always great to be on vacation. We came to the Hamptons to hang out and go shopping and go to the beach. I love going to the beach and going in the ocean. And we’re going to have a cook out and probably go to the movies. might have had was that I was a Yankee fan and he was probably a Dodger fan.

Notwithstanding this common beginning our points of view in the current world are quite different. Recently I responded to a column of Jerry’s in which he lambasted the Health Care Law. I explained why I thought it was of great benefit to my fellow Americans.

Now Jerry questions whether Wall Street bankers will again support Obama.

If Wall Street doesn’t, it will be because he has sought to rein in the abuse of the financial system, which led to the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

So many Americans have and continue to suffer because of the abuses of Wall Street bankers.

Jerry made his money honestly as a creative businessman as did I as a lawyer. I really do not understand why he sympathizes with those Wall Street bankers and criticizes Obama.

I wonder what Jerry’s parents would think of his point of view. I know my parents would be proud of mine.

A Good Candidate To the Editor, I join others who are disgusted with

Suffolk County GOP chairman John J. LaValle’s decision not to support Jeremy Brandt’s run against unchallenged incumbent Fred Thiele. When courageous young conservatives seek to challenge a flip flopping incumbent who is not doing his job well, we all need to get behind good candidates and bring a new generation of energy and ideas into the arena of politics.

Mr. Brandt has a career as a businessman, so he knows what it is like to work among the locals, what it is like to make payroll, and what it is like to live in a county that has ever increasing property taxes. Young families are struggling to stay in their hometowns due to the high cost of living.

It is has become obvious Mr. Thiele is out of ideas, has no power or influence, to help the East Enders survive the confiscatory taxes, levies, regulations and fees foisted upon us.

The Bigger Picture Dear Editor, There are many problems today that defy solutions. Take the problem of affordable housing. This difficulty or lack thereof, affects all classes, low, middle and upper. Many of our children cannot afford to live here. Nor can our first responders or teachers or civil servants. So this would seem to be a need so obvious and so important all in our town are affected.

A contentious debate occurred in the last two Southampton Town Board Meetings. Why? Because a resolution by the board was passed to specify that five town owned properties would be specifically used only for construction of affordable, owner occupied, town owned properties.

Last month, the representatives from several civic associations said the Flanders area is already saturated with rundown rentals neglected by absentee ownership.

However, in the last meeting, several members of the Housing Authority and one from community got up and stated the need for favoring rentals over home ownership as many individuals in the community can not afford or qualify for home ownership.

There is an undeniable need for both rental and home ownership in every community. Too many times important issues that need solutions come up against politicians and citizens who play to the special interests they represent. In today’s polarized environment, often emotions

take over and compromise becomes a dirty word. Aren’t we all, regardless of political party, really sick and tired of this?

Where are our profiles in courage from our community leaders and politicians?

Seems to me, in the name of compromise and the bigger picture, if five houses go for home ownership then the next five go to rentals. Or, we can continue to argue and posture and propose to cut the baby in half.

Non-Essentials Dear Editor, I can’t help but be both curious and confused by candidate Mitt Romney’s characterization of the affordable health care plan as being “non-essential” when he spoke at the N.A.A.C.P. convention in Houston recently.

It is estimated that around 30 to 33 million Americans that don’t now have healthcare benefits will be able to get them when the health care plan comes into full effect in 2014, and simple math will tell you that on the very day that Romney was addressing that convention there were literally thousands and thousands of Americans that were sitting in doctor’s offices, emergency rooms and even lying in regular hospital beds who aren’t covered by any benefit plan whose “essential” thought was how in the world they were going to figure out a way to pay their evermounting medical bills.

I would have to think that Romney, whose personal wealth is said to run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, has been wise enough to invest in a healthcare package that covers he and his wife – although Mrs. Romney might be feeling

some concern now with Mitt showing a possible penchant for living on the edge with his deeming of having health care

insurance a “non-essential.”

In addition to complaints about roosters, board members were given an earful about a proposed deer management plan. A handful of speakers took exception to a portion of the plan that draws a connection between deer and Lyme Disease.

They said it’s been established that the culling of deer has no impact on the incidences of the illness; if deer are eliminated the ticks that carry Lyme Disease simply switch to another host.

Opponents to lethal methods of deer management, such as a professional culling included among the document’s recommendations, suggested alternatives like a slow driving campaign designed to raise awareness of the proximity of deer to roadways.

Councilman Dominick Stanzione, who’s ridden herd on the crafting of the plan said Friday, “I welcome community participation in the development of a comprehensive, effective and compassionate deer management plan.” He emphasized professional culling is just one of myriad recommendations listed in the plan. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Fleming’s Campaign Moves Forward Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming’s campaign for a seat in the state senate is gaining momentum.

Fleming’s campaign reports the councilwoman raised over $53,000 as of July 11, with 77 percent of contributions coming from individuals who gave $250 or less. In addition, the following day, Fleming’s campaign filed petitions for nominations to both the Democratic and Working Families Party ballot lines. She is now endorsed by both parties.

Fleming announced her candidacy on May 31, after having opened an exploratory committee in March.

“In just a few months our campaign has raised over $52,000, mostly by way of small donations from residents of eastern Suffolk County,” the councilwoman said.

In an effort to unseat incumbent Senator Ken LaValle, Fleming added, “The outpouring of support clearly indicates voter dissatisfaction with the closed door policies of the Long Island Senate delegation. My campaign could not move forward without the help of our faithful volunteers, and I’m grateful for the campaign’s strong grassroots support.”

Swim For Montauk Playhouse Time to get wet again! Why? The Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation is raising money for a swimming pool. This annual event, organized by the East Hampton Ocean Rescue squad, is an open water swim at Kirk Park beach on Saturday. Man With Knife Arrested In Water Mill A Bridgehampton resident was arrested last Friday at about 3:15 PM and faces a slew of charges after Southampton Town Police responded to an emergency call at the Water Mill Commons.

A single patrol unit allegedly found nineteen-year-old Jesse Amberstone with a knife on Montauk Highway. Police say after ordering Amberstone to drop the weapon, the subject lunged at the officer at the scene, making slashing motions towards him. According to police, Amberstone was then sprayed with pepper spray and disarmed.

The assailant, as well as two other officers, were taken to Southampton Hospital and treated for minor injuries. All were released.

Once transported to police headquarters, Amberstone was charged with attempted assault in the second degree on a police officer, menacing a police officer (both felonies), criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, resisting arrest, and reckless endangerment in the second degree (all three of which are misdemeanors).

Amberstone was then held for arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court.

Train Back in 2013

Member Roger Deseve of Remsenburg, NY and his guest, Jim Malone, won the first Annual Member Guest Tournament at Long Island National Golf Club. Paired with member Leo Waters and Mr. Kell, Deseve and Malone posted a winning score of 2 over par 73 on the 6238 yard Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. Thirty members and their guest competed in the best ball format. Chrystal Trophies awarded to the winner and runner up in the first ever event held at Long Island National Golf Club.

Mr. Tierney and Mr. Federman were runner-up with a score of 78. “The course conditions and weather were perfect for the event,” stated William Labrador, Director of Golf.

“We were very pleased with the turn out and level of competition. The players were also very complimentary of the event. Players gathered for the awards luncheon after the event. Malone also won for closest to the flagstick on the 193 yard, par 3 while Chad Newman, nephew of member Phil Newman won longest drive.

Assemblyman Fred Thiele stood behind a Long Island Railroad proposal that would restore one peak evening train from Hunters Point to Montauk. When the peak train was originally cut in the spring of 2010, Thiele had “expressed vehement opposition,” he reminded this week.

Now, restoring the train is to be part of a $29 million investment in services by the LIRR, with the proposal to be implemented in March, 2013.

“After years of paying more and getting less service from the LIRR, we have seen a reversal of fortune for the East End . . . The restoration of the Hunters Point train is another step in the right direction. I have long said that the way to make the LIRR successful is by growing service, not increasing fares and eliminating service.

Recent developments show that this message is starting to be heard,” the assemblyman said, adding, “I appreciate the actions of the Governor [Cuomo] and the LIRR President in this regard.”

A caretaker at an estate in Georgica came upon what appeared to be a shag rug on the lawn – only to find out it was a swarm of honey bees. Rob Deichert, a beekeeper, gathered what he estimated to be 7000 bees, sustaining one sting in the process.

Diechert said a single hive can hold as many as 70,000 bees. “They are usually docile if they aren’t in a protect the hive mode,” he noted. The honey bee population has been declining for the past decade, but a warm winter apparently rejuvenated the local bees. Deichert’s honey is on sale at Dayton Farm.

Attempts To Expand Striper Fishery Congressman Tim Bishop’s bill to expand the striped bass fishery into federal waters off Long Island gained valued support last week, from a venerable Viking.

Captain Paul G. Forsberg, President of the Viking Fishing Fleet, testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs in Washington Committee in Washington.

He said Bishop’s bill is “of huge importance to our business,” adding, “We will be able to employ more people as we would expect to carry many more passengers . . . the increase in business would effect all the boats on Long Island.” Viking is one of the largest year round employers in Montauk with around 50 full-time employees for its fishing and ferry operations.

Jim Hutchinson, managing director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance and president of the New York Sportfishing Federation, pointed out the argument for allowing recreational access to Striped Bass in the Block Island Sound Transit Zone comes down to the arbitrary way that state and federal waters were originally drawn up in the 1970’s during authorization of the Magnuson Act. “Block Island Sound should be treated as state waters, same as the Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake,” Hutchinson told the Committee.

Bishop thanked Forsberg “for coming to Washington to help me make the case that expanding the recreational Striped Bass fishery will boost Eastern Long Island’s economy.” He added, “The fishery is healthy and I also agree with Jim Hutchinson that Block Island Sound should be state waters, with Striped Bass populations managed responsibly under their jurisdiction.”

It’s Crunch Time in HCBL

With a precious few days left in the regular season six teams are battling for four playoff spots. The North Fork Ospreys, with a 21-13 record, still hold down first place.

Both the Riverhead Tomcats (20-15) and Shelter Island Bucks (21-16) are knocking on the door.

The real race is for the final playoff berth, with the Southampton Breakers (18-17) holding a half game lead over the Center Moriches Battlecats (17-17). The Westhampton Aviators, at 15-21, still have a mathematical chance of making the post-season tournament.

On Sunday Southampton came up with a huge win, besting Center Moriches on the losers’ home field.

Shelter Island and the Tomcats split a double header on Sunday in Riverhead. Geo Saba knocked in

the winning run and also lashed a home run earlier in the game. The visitors took the opener 7-5 in 12 innings and Riverhead rallied in the nightcap for a 7-5 victory. Jonathan Cohen earned the win, striking out 10 in the process.

The Ospreys crushed Sag Harbor Sunday 10-3 behind their ace, David St. Lawrence. The winners erupted for eight runs in the ninth inning.

Dan Kerr had three hits for the winners. Sag Harbor fell to 12-25 for the season.

The Ospreys play at Riverhead tomorrow, The Bucks get Sag Harbor at home and Southampton travels to Center Moriches. On Friday Sag Harbor plays at Center Moriches.

The playoffs begin Saturday.

Happy Trails While Trailering Part I We’ve written in the past about commissioning (making ready) the boat for the summer months. And you may recall that we started with making sure the trailer was capable of safely transporting your boat from the driveway to the boat ramp.

This column expands considerably on that, now that the summer is in full swing. Since this is a topic that can take up lots of space just due to safety precautions, this is Part I of a two-part series.

Safety First I have an uncle who drives his boat pretty hard -- WOT (Wide Open Throttle) and dead-stop are his two favorite speeds. As you might expect, the boat is wearing out around him from stress and strain. When he complained to me about it, I said, “If you constantly drove your brand-new car at full speed over a bumpy road, would you be surprised that it might start to shake loose?� He said, “hmm . . .�

That started me thinking about trailering. When you are driving your boat over many types of road (how about those wintercreated pot holes?) at relatively high speeds, stresses from over-theroad travel can be more punishing than normal operation.

A boat is designed to sit in water, along her waterline. While the manufacturer may even put some markings along the waterline that say “trailer strap goes here,� nothing “extra� is there; it is simply a mathematical recommendation about the weight displacement of the boat. And that is before you added all that gear.

Trailering is, by its nature, more stressful on the boat than riding at anchor.

Start with making sure that what the boat sits on isn’t adding to the stress. You don’t want your rollers or bunkers stressing, scratching or gouging the hull.

Make sure the tie-downs (and engine support) do not permit the boat to bounce on the trailer. How can you be sure? Well, you aren’t going to be able to lift the boat up to see. It’s too heavy by far.

Unfortunately, the only way to be sure is by testing. Have someone follow you over a course and watch the boat. Speed limit only! If any air shows, stop and adjust the straps.

Then, once all is secure, make some marks or apply some tell-tales so you can consistently have the boat

sit snuggly on her trailer.

Be sure she is sitting properly in the first place. What does that mean? No more than seven to 10 percent of the total weight of the boat should be on the trailer “tongue� – the part that attaches the ball and coupler together.

This means that a 3,000 pound boat, including engine, cooler, etc, can have no more than 210 to 300-pounds on the tongue.

Well, how do you tell that? You’ll need a couple of bathroom scales and a strong friend. Each of you stand on the scale while lifting the tongue together. Note the combined weight. Step off, weigh yourselves and subtract. If the resulting numbers add up to more than 300 pounds, the boat is too far forward. If the final figure is less than 210 pounds, it is too far aft.

Why is that important? Too much weight at the back (too light at the front), will tend to pry your car’s rear tires up. That’s less traction than designed by the manufacturer.

Too much weight on the tongue (too heavy at the front), will tend to pry your car’s front tires up. That’s less steering control than designed by the manufacturer. Neither is going to be good for you.

The car must be properly configured with an engine powerful enough to handle the load and a transmission designed for towing.

The vehicle may need a heavy duty cooling system and special brakes as well.

Make sure a load-bearing hitch is attached to the frame, not the bumper. The tow ball and coupler must be the same size, exactly. The boat may be properly secured to the trailer but the trailer has to be properly secured to your car or you may see her pass you on the highway.

to the frame of the tow vehicle. If the ball and coupler were to break apart, the trailer would fall into the chains, which now are a safety net.

Underway, Making Way Now you’re ready to go. Before going too far, be sure that the lights on the trailer function properly.

Remember, each time you come up that boat ramp, your lights have been in (cold) salt water.

So do your brakes. Check them, too. Drive forward and apply the brakes several times at increasing speeds to determine a safe stopping distance.

Check tires (including spare) and wheel bearings for proper inflation.

Remember trailer tires are likely to be far smaller than car or truck tires. This means that they will be spinning faster just to stay in place.

Faster equals more stress on the bearings. And don’t forget that the aft-most set of tires will be in salt water at least twice a day when you go boating.

Mets Can’t Mortgage Future For Present The New York Mets have kicked off the second half of the season in incredibly disappointing fashion.

Since the All-Star break the Metropolitans lost eight of nine entering this week, and are free falling out of playoff contention.

For fans, it’s a real tease to see your team in contention for 86

games, only to watch them enter a downward spiral. But there is very little GM Sandy Alderson should do to stop the bleeding. The best thing for this franchise would be to stay put before next week’s trade deadline.

level greater than the sum of their parts. Most fans knew what they were seeing was unlikely to last over the entire 162 game schedule. But part of being is fan is hoping your team can defy the odds.

Unfortunately, it’s that much more painful when reality sets in.

There’s no complicated formula to fixing these Mets, they are just playing more like the flawed team many expected prior to the season.

To add insult to injury, Johan Santana was added to the fifteenday disabled list with a sprained right ankle. Santana joins fellow starter Dillon Gee, whose season is in jeopardy following a blood clot in his right shoulder. Frankly, it seems like Santana’s restructured shoulder could use a breather; the lefty is 3-5 with a 6.54 ERA in eight outings since throwing a career high 134 pitches in his no-hitter.

Meantime, the Mets bullpen continues to be atrocious. New York’s bullpen has a Major League worst 4.95 ERA, nearly a run and a half above baseball’s average of 3.66 ERA. A roster tweak, such as bringing in a seventh inning reliever or a right-handed bench bat, would not make this team a championship contender. There are too many major pieces that need to be added to justify a deadline move.

Fans will recall that just before the trading deadline in 2004, when

the Mets were six games back of the division, GM Jim Duquette traded Scott Kazmir, Jose Bautista and four other players for starting pitchers Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano. New York never sniffed the playoffs and traded away part of their future. That’s the last type of move Alderson needs to make this season.

The Mets have many quality farm players, especially pitchers, and to trade part of their future to make a run now would be a big mistake. Studs like Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jeurys Familia, and Jenrry Mejia could all help this roster take the next step to title contention over the next season or two. Moving any of them to benefit a flawed team would be incredibly short sighted.

The New York Mets 2012 season has already been more exciting than any fan could have expected back in March. The Madoff burden is gone, the team spent half the season in the playoff race, and fans are once again proud to wear their orange and blue.

Rather than trying to save this season at the expense of the future, let’s hope 2012 winds up like 1984 or 1997; the beginning of another winning era.

The Year Of The Gronk Remember when tight ends were an afterthought? For about eight years there was Shannon Sharpe and a bunch of nobodies. Then came Tony Gonzalez. Then Antonio Gates for about five years.

At every draft the same thing would happen: who’s gonna take the marquee tight end first? Sometimes it was late in the third round.

Sometimes the next round. After that it was anybody’s guess when the next tight end would be taken.

Those days are gone. Tight ends are now being taken (GASP!) in the first round, and there are plenty who warrant a third or fourth round pick.

The Monsters: Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham. These guys ranked sixth and seventh overall in receiving yards; Graham was second overall in receptions, with a neat 100 for the season. Gronk led all receivers in touchdowns with 18 – not just tight ends, all wide receivers as well. In fact, only one player scored more touchdowns – LeSean McCoy, a running back.

Both Gronk and Graham have been going in the first round.

Gronk was the first overall pick in my recent Sportsline draft. That’s unheard of.

We are advocating passing on these two guys, and waiting a few rounds to pick up a tight end, mainly because there are a halfdozen or more who could be sitting on big years.

Aaron Hernandez, who plays with Gronk in New England was considered just as good before last season. The Patriots also line him up a fullback on occasion, and that means bonus rushing yards and maybe even an occasional rushing TD. Vernon Davis showed what he could do in the playoffs, and the 49ers may be sitting on a big season, and that means ball-control. Davis is

also dynamite in the end zone, and the looks and touches translate to touchdowns.

Jermichael Finley (Packers), Jason Whitten and Gates (Chargers) both have the pedigree to reach the 1000-yard plateau. It’s a question of injuries, and how much they have left in the tank.

We love Fred Davis in Washington.

He’s had some huge days in the past but now it looks like he’ll get the starting job over Chris Cooley.

Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III will need a safety valve – that’s Davis. If he stays healthy he may hit 1000 yards.

Jacob Tamme, who used to play for the Colts with Peyton Manning, reunites with Manning in Denver. He’s a familiar face and has excellent hands. If Manning stays healthy, Tamme could be good for 75 reception and 800 yards.

Coby Fleener, a rookie, will play with Andrew Luck in Indianapolis.

The pair could become quite a tandem in the years to come.

Michael Vick finally noticed Brent Celek in Philadelphia. He might still be around in the eighth round or so.

If you don’t get one of the above, don’t panic. Wait until right before you pick your kicker and team defense. There will still be some legitimate sleepers available – Joel Dreesen, Germain Gresham, Jared Cook and Brandon Pettigrew, just to name a few.

It’s probably the money play to grab up the good running backs and quarterbacks, dip into the deep pool of wide receivers, and stock up on those positions while the other guys are going tight end happy.

Fishing Report

Sea Bass Out There, Fluke In Here Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean Fluke are biting in the bay and ocean. Bay bite has been best at the top of the tide, incoming water has been best. Most baits working well including spearing/squid combo and gulps. The ocean fluke can be found on the reef and both east and west of the sea buoy. Live baits like our large killies and snappers are doing well.

Sea bass continue to please anglers on the reef. Try a fluke sea bass combo trip out here and you should come home with some dinner. The inlet is holding some bass but bites are few and far between. Triggerfish are on the reef too along with some porgies.

On The Water

Peconic Bay Best bet is porgies around Robin’s island with clam and clam chum.

Surf/Shore Bound/Canal The snappers are here and they’re hungry. The canal and most creeks and back bay areas are holding them. A few bass came from the inlet’s jetties as well as some fluke and triggerfish. The Ponquogue Bridge has had some fluke come over the rails during the day and bass during the night tides. Porgies are at the canal’s north end. The beaches have been quiet.
