Thousands visit area for battle reenactment By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

Despite some bad weather, initial celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Battle seem to have gone well. Nita Rutledge, Hardin County Public Relations Coordinator, told the Independent Appeal last Monday that personnel from the Armies of Tennessee, who staged one of the two reenactments of the historic battle last Saturday and Sunday, were hard at work restoring cleaning up and restoring the land upon which the reenactment occurred. This event occurred in Counce. “We are working just as hard after the reenactment as before,” she said. AOT’s events began last Friday, when reenactors and Wayne Jerrolds’s band, which played period music, went to Hardin County Schools. Students from Decatur County were also bussed in. The rainy

A high speed chase in southern McNairy County ended when the suspect lost control of his vehicle on Smith Store Road in Guys. The suspect’s vehicle, as well as two McNairy County Sheriff’s Department cruisers were damaged in the pursuit. However, no injuries were reported. The driver, Reggie Neal Moffett of Adamsville, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with several drug charges in addition to the charges related to the car chase. According to the incident report, Deputy Keenan Lamberth saw a white Dodge truck run the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 22 South and Price Road. The vehicle crossed Highway 22 onto Melvin Qualls Road. At this time, The reporting officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. According to Lamberth, the vehicle slowed down as if to stop, and then accelerated and turned right onto Will Coln Road, then left onto New Hope Road, left onto Sticine Road, right onto Ridge Road, right onto Old Hwy 45, right onto Highway 45 South, a right onto Smith Store Road, and then made an abrupt turn into an embankment on Smith Store road, just past Hack Bridge Road. Lamberth recalled meeting five motorists on the roadway during the pursuit, along with five officers who assisted in the apprehension of the evading subject. According to the report, Moffett lost control of his vehicle while attempting to navigate a sharp turn and at that time two sheriff’s dept. vehicles collided while trying to stop at the scene. Lamberth said that the driver of the vehicle did not heed officers calls to leave his vehicle and that it took three officers to

With Timeline, Facebook is doing its first major makeover in five years (see accompanying article). The pattern has been that people first complain about the changes, then get used to them. How much of the changes are motivated by serving the consumers and how much by serving the advertisers is debatable. If making the default publishing more information was really mostly to help the consumers, they could give consumers a choice between adopting Timeline or keeping their old profiles. It is highly likely that Timeline will result in more information for advertisers because users will not want to put the time and effort in hiding or deleting information about them. In general, it is my view that change should always be for the better, not just for change’s sake or for the worse, but in my expe-

Where in McNairy

Mega Lottery Mania

Staff photo by Christen Coulon

Where in McNairy is a weekly contest in which readers are asked to identify a beautiful, unique, or overlooked locale within the county. To win, readers must be the first to identify the approximate location of our weekly photo. The winning entry will be sent to submissions@independentappeal.com and must contain the subject line ‘Where in McNairy,’ and a contact name and phone number in the e-mail body. We will identify each week’s winner in the following issue. This week’s winner will receive a $15 gift card to Food Giant in Selmer. The Independent Appeal is not responsible for lost, misdirected or undelivered emails. Week 18: Gloria Coln who correctly identified the dolphin sculptures on Hwy. 57 near Michie.

The line for lottery tickets stretches throughout the Eastview Chevron and Subway last Friday. The Mega Millions jackpot for that drawing was a record $640 million. Staff Photo By Jeff Whitten
