Early voting kicks off in McNairy Co. Election Day: Tuesday, Aug. 6 Early Voting Ends: Saturday, Aug. 1 By Joel Counce Staff Writer
Early voting has begun in McNairy County for the upcoming Aug. 6 election. “We had 144 total vote on the first day,” McNairy County Election Commissioner Joanie Collins said. “That’s pretty close to normal.” A total of 300 voters cast ballots in the first two days, down about 10 percent from the same two days in 2016. Numbers are up 16 percent from 258 voters in 2012. A total of 91,106 early votes have been cast statewide. Collins said voters will need a valid photo ID and keep COVID-19 precautions. “They have to practice social distancing and we do have a sanitation table,” she said. “They can use sanitizer and put on gloves to vote. These are not required, but we do strongly encourage that. We also strongly encourage people to wear a mask.” Voters are encouraged to park in the back parking lot of the annex at 400 Mulberry Ave. “We are having them come in the door under the awning and they will go down this long hallway so they can practice social distancing.,” Collins said. “They come to the back where the awning is.” Early voting is available from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - noon Saturday and runs through Aug. 1.

Log truck driver dies from injuries By Joel Counce
“He would give you the shirt off his back.”
Staff Writer
A Bells, Tennessee man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a July 6 accident in McNairy County. Curtis Davis, 57, passed away on July 13 at Regional One (The Med) in Memphis. Davis was driving a 1997 International truck hauling logs on Highway 45 near the McNairy County Justice Complex when he lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a guardrail and a John Deere Zero-Turn lawnmower operated by Billy O’Connor of Corinth. Connor, 49, died at the scene. Davis’ brother, Clint, remembers him as a good friend.

“If he was a friend to you, you never had one better,” he said. “He would quit a paying job to help someone else and he’s done that more than once.” Davis’ mother, Joyce Ward, remembered his generous spirit. “He never had much,” she said. “But if he had a dollar and you needed it, he would give it to you. He would give you the shirt off his back.”
Fire chief: CARES Act money will fund PPE By Joel Counce
Davis’ sister, Denise Davis-Miller, agreed. “I remember when he didn’t have much, he was worried about some neighbor’s kids not having enough for Christmas,” she said. Davis-Miller said her brother never knew the accident was fatal. “He never knew he hurt anyone,” she said. “We didn’t want to tell him while he was recovering.”

Michie has the best drinking water in West Tennessee. The Tennessee Association of Utility Districts (TAUD) judged drinking water from eight counties - Chester, Fayette, Hardeman, Henderson, Madison, McNairy, Shelby, and Tipton – for clarity, bouquet and taste. Senator Ed Jackson, R e p r e sentative Chris Todd, Ed Jackson III of Congressman Kustoff’s office, TAUD Board President Pat Riley and Steve Bowers of 101.5 FM, acted as judges for the conRoger Jenkins test. “This was a good accomplishment,” Michie Water Department Manager Roger Jenkins said. “I’m proud of the employees. We take our drinking water seriously. People don’t understand how hard it is. It takes a lot of people working behind the scenes to put it out there.” Michie employs five Jenkins, maintenance and water plant opera-

Michie uses a ground water well system to supply its water. “We have a lot of iron. We go through a process to get that out. We add chlorine and potassium permanganate to get the iron out. We go through a sedimentation process.” Potassium permanganate dissolves iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into solid particles so they can be filtered out of the water. Michie also uses an aeration and
sedimentation basin, a process that involves removing solid particles through moving water. The aeration helps remove hydrogen sulfate, a gas that causes a “rotten egg” odor. “There are four pressure filters,” Jenkins said. “We have a grade 3 license to run this place, because there is so much iron in the water. Most departments have a level 1.” Pressure filters are back washed every other day, according to Jenkins. “Under normal operations, the water comes in through the tops of the pressure filters,” he said. “When

Pat Knight decided to update her cafe - along Court Avenue and Third Street in Selmer – for the first time in 32 years. “I wanted to update the stools,” Knight said. “I asked customers about how to reupholster them and they recommended the quilting ladies.” Pins and Needles, a quilting group that meets at the McNairy County Museum Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., agreed to replace the green leather covering on
the stools. “We had never done anything like this before,” Pins and Needles Chairwoman Linda Smith said. “We had only done quilts, but this was a short leap from that.” Smith, Faye Miller, Raven Maxwell and Vicki Sullivan sewed the 10 stool covers and returned them to the cafe. Pat’s Cafe is open 5 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. “We have been featured inside the Tennessee State Museum and we were awarded Best Slugburger at the Rockabily Festival twice,” Knight said.
