McNairy County School Security Funding to provide officer at AHS, MCHS By Steve Beavers Assistant Editor
The McNairy County School District will use its portion of school safety funding to add an officer at each high school. McNairy County received around $140,000 of one-time funding from the state. Tennessee has awarded $35 million to improve school security to those districts who identified safety needs. The McNairy County School
Security Team has been formed through the funding, according to Director of Schools Greg Martin. “By forming the safety team we will be able to provide an on-campus officer at Adamsville and McNairy Central most of the year,” said Martin. Final details for the program will be ironed out Friday, according to Martin. The two officers are slated to begin Oct. 1. Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam’s
“I feel like we have done a good job of looking at our needs.” - Greg Martin school safety program includes $25 million in one-time funding for schools to address security problems and $10 million in recurring grant funding for ongoing safety and prevention programs. McNairy County’s recurring
funding is expected to be about $40,000 a year. “We hope to have the ability to continue this,” said Martin. “I feel like we have done a good job of looking at our needs.” Martin credited school dis-
trict employees Amy Coffman and Shelva Moore for their work in the team organization. “They put together the plan,” he said. The McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, Selmer Police Department and Adamsville Police Department also helped coordinate the team. “Sheriff Guy Buck has been really good to work with us,” said Martin. “He has provided a lot of

Lakeview Church: ‘Come as you are’ By Steve Beavers Assistant Editor
Meeting people where they are. Lakeview Church is using the method to reach the lost and unchurched. “The mission is the same, but churches have to change today,” said pastor Clint Overton. “It’s time for Christians to quit coming to church and be the church.” Lakeview’s approach is working. The Selmer church has baptized over 200 people since 2014. “We moved to a more modern church because we felt like that was the path God put us on,” said Overton of the 2014 move. The modern change allows
people to see Lakeview as more transparent, according to Overton. “They love that we are real with the gospel,” he said. “We aren’t judgmental and don’t look down on anyone ... transparent is the key word for us.” Over 16,000 of McNairy County’s 26,000 residents are unchurched. “There are plenty of lost people to go around,” said Overton of each church’s plan to reach the lost. “We are all on the same team – we just do things a different way.” The mission is two-fold at Lakeview. “God wants us to reach the lost and make disciples,” said

fort. “The more we come together as churches, we see it’s not me versus you, but it’s us against the enemy,” he said. “When one church wins, we all win.” The combined efforts of the Selmer Ministerial Alliance is bringing congregations together to reach the community. Members of the Selmer Ministerial Alliance are Lakeview, Cypress Creek First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church–Selmer, Life Wind Covenant Church, First Christian Church, Falcon Baptist Church, Mount Zion Baptist Church and First Baptist Church– Bethel Springs. “Jesus is 100 percent in this,”

said Overton of the alliance. “I think we are on the right path of changing the community ... all of us are in this together.” The Ministerial Alliance plans to host a community-wide revival on Oct. 14-16 at the McNairy Central Little Theatre. “Our culture is changing so much that not everyone goes to church,” said Overton. “If every church was at capacity, we would still come up short of people in church.” There are about 105 churches in the county. “All of us can reach different people,” said Overton. “We have to build each other up and God will use all of us to reach this community.”
