The first meeting is in the books for a new county mayor and 15 first-time commissioners. “I am encouraged by this group,” said McNairy County Mayor Larry Smith following Monday’s September meeting of the County Commission. “I believe each of them is interested in moving the county forward.” Twenty of the 21 commissioners were present. Second District Commissioner Ryan Sisk was un-

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is putting the focus on the 731. TDEC is partnering with McNairy County Solid Waste Management for a second straight year to highlight businesses and individuals who practice sustainability in the area. The 2nd Annual 731 Fest is slated for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at McNairy Central High School. “The festival has changed a little bit in that we are also trying to sustain small businesses in the 731 area code,” said Solid Waste Director Cindy Kennedy. “Saturday will be a wonderful opportunity for any small businesses to get their name out there.” McNairy County was the site for the first festival of its kind in the state last year. “TDEC wants to make it an annual festival since ours was so successful,” said Kennedy. Over 900 attended the initial fest at Crazy K last July. “A majority of businesses sold out of everything they brought last year,” added Kennedy. Vendors have until Friday to

Dreams come true. That’s no lie. Arts in McNairy will present “Pinocchio” at the Latta Friday-Sunday. Friday and Saturday shows are set for 7:30 p.m. A Sunday matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. “It’s not about a little boy who lies,” said director Jonathon McDaniel said. “It’s about dreams coming true.” McDaniel also said the audience shouldn’t expect to see the Disney version of Pinocchio.

“It’s a children’s play which I love to do because they still believe in magic and I have some of that in me,” he said. “I admire a child’s confidence that everything will be okay.” The play, adapted by John Morley for the stage in 1983, is based on the book “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Italian writer Carlo Collodi, first published in 1883. The story follows Pinocchio, a wooden marionette by Master Geppetto, who has a nose that grows when he is stressed, especially when he is lying. Collodi first wrote the story as a tragedy.
